Should we dodo the electorates and focus on leaders and lists? Seems to be what a few people, including Bryce Edwards are suggesting. Is it pragmatic electioneering or marginalising regional representation?

Electorate MPs redundant, party lists rule?

Lists and MPs without “proper” mandates are seen by many to be a major weakness of MMP, so this seems odd.

Labour needs a new leader, but potential leadership aspirants are side-stepping the job until after the Election. This means no one is prepared to attempt to guide the Labour Party to a better result than it will otherwise have, no one will try to represent those voters who believed in them last Election or are attracted to policies they now try to express. The party’s Parliamentary positions are more important to the Labour politicians than the Party itself, the policies they express, or the people they would serve.
So fuck them.

The lefty’s always seem to forget the cost. Education is a monster that needs a firm hand just like health. Some would have us spend more and more for less and less benefit. In the hard copy its interesting that you can get credits in Maori language and math I fail to see how this helps anyone to successfully complete a degree in science

OK so Sofia I know you said f**k them but lets try to select a new leader for Labour, that but be amusing for a time. Or lets select the Labour portfolios that MP’s (assuming they get re-elected) SHOULDNT have ie: Parekura Horomia with the Health Portfolio instead should have the Disability!

Well if you understand the language you can then tap into the traditional use of herbs and plants that Maori used, this is a massive industry at the moment, however the majority of the knowledge of this traditional use is with the older Maori who prefer to teach this knowledge via Tikanga Maori.

I dont let my 10yr old, she doesnt have a mobile either. Sometimes she’s not happy with our decision, especially when younger children have mobiles or want to get in touch via Facebook, but she does know when she’s at least 14 we’ll have a talk then.
Its a non issue in our house.

Social media is the new world denying children access to this new world will disable them in that as yet unknown future. Things are changing very fast 50 years ago a computer with the power of a cheap cell phone cost millions and took up whole buildings. enough adults don’t get the revolution. kids will need literacy in the new world if they have any hope of a place in the new society

I have to tell you something funny about facebook and mobile phone arrangements.
When we initially had this talk with her and said we would discuss it again when she was 14.
She came back to us with a “contract” saying that we would look at her “maturity” when she was 14 and we would listen to her before we came to our decision. The signed contract has been posted in a prominent position on the fridge. Still funny but quite proud of her really.

Your logic fails.
Social media is now an entrenched part of everyones lives like it or not.
TV did this in the 60’s as did newspapers before them.
Remain in the dinasour category if you want but expect that social media will be the norm within a year or so.
Online newspapaers are social media, talk radio is social media, Google is the most powerful yet the most freedon giving social media around.
Business is moving rapidly from TV and Newspaper to social media using websites, Facebook and Google+1 and the war for your attention is just starting.
Once broadband is running at speed you have little choice but to learn and be involved.
Doesn’t mean to say it needs to takeover your life.
Oh and by the way, Kiwiblog is social media.
But DEEdee and Falu don’t use that do they. 😆

Your forgetting The responsibility of the parent.
Its a balance wouldnt you say based on each individual situation. My husband and I set the ground rules in the house, some are negotiable dependent on the situation. Internet access happens to be one of those. No internet after 9pm but if she’s completed her chores she may be given extra time on the weekend.

Its a pretty sad indictment of the state of Liarbore that no one is working behind the scene to try and keep some voters onside even if (quite wisely) they dont want to be associated with this upcomming election defeat.
Goof and Mallard are killing off support at an epic pace.
I am picking that the LP’s support is going to tank bigtime, masses of LP supporters just wont bother, with watermelons and winstonfirst doing well out of the whole deal.

Recently completed a survey on this for a year 10 student. I found it sad that she had no idea about blogs did not even know it was social media. School are lagging behind. Like the attitude to wiki,kids should be encouraged to use this resource properly as in looking behind the posts following links and judging the quality of information not just the content. Many schools just discourage its use full stop

Did you see the 2 suits from adidas on Closeup last night. Talk about a PR disaster. They just kept digging themselves into a deeper hole.
They were obviously sent by HO to ‘sort out those dumb Kiwis” and failed.
How thick can a company be to try and gouge the price of their product in these days when we can buy on line. And then close down the online facility.

To the lawyers out there Shouldnt the Commerce Commission be investigating this?

We only let our daughter have a cellphone (with limit credits) when she was 9 because she catches the Auckland trains home.
The service and organisation is so piss poor they do things like stop the train at a station only 1/2 way into the journey and tell the occupants to fuck off. No organised buses, no nothing. Between that an long delays with no explanations or statements if any trains will ever come that way again make it bloody difficult for kids to arrive home.

So she has a cellphone so she can call us and we can come and take her home from various random stations along the Western rail line. Once this was a frequent event but recently has become much better.

Quite right but the problem is reality. IMHO its better to educate them in the proper use so that they are able to spot danger when it lurks. Would you not let her cross the road because she might get hit by a vehilce or do you teach her how to cross safely? The sooner you teach that safety the better. you do not have her attention 24/7so saftey is better.

Your splitting hairs arent you? She is very proficient in using the internet, she uses You Tube on occasion and will ask us before she subscribes to any channels. She uses her email to contact family members overseas, she also skypes friends and family overseas. As I said earlier, she will use the net for school projects and she doesnt miss Facebook because she’s never used it. She may in the future but she will have had an excellent grounding in safety on the net before then.

Social media is somewhat of a red herring in analysing the fallout of the London riots. That is not to say that communications played a role in the orchestration of the riots , but in isolation it was not exclusively the cause.
Dr Bronwyn Haywood a researcher from Canterbury University appeared on Close Up last night to offer her insight into the causes for the riots and also for her comment on whether it could happen here.
Dr Haywood has been studying this youth phenomenon in the UK and attributed the causes to variety of sources but essentially compartmentalised her findings into three catergories.
Firstly it was her view that high unemployment amongest youth set the background for the violence, anger and resentment being the motivating factors.
Secondly youth saturated suburbs where overcrowding and competition for resources played a significant role.This has led to turf wars where gangs compete for the control of the drug trade, and violence is seen as a mechanism for achieving prosperity.
Thirdly and most telling was the assertion that this generation of young people will have outcomes worse than their parents as a result of the inability of the youth to improve upon the social mobility of their parents, the perception being that youth are trapped socially with little likelihood of improving upon their situation.

This of course paints a bleak picture for England and Europe, and it will be a monumental challenge for the young to adapt to these constrained circumstances.

Dr Haywood completed her analysis of the situation by pointing directly to an area where youth in England have been considerably demotivated ; Education.
The current Tory government in England in an austerity drive to rain in balloning costs in the education sector, had made some unwise cuts in the tertiary sector which is feeding into the social problems that we have witnessed. Those cuts in removing education subsidies, raising tertiary fee’s, and also raising enrollement costs have had the effect of making education exclusive to the wealthy or well connected.

No charges are being laid in an incident early this morning in which a 19-year-old Melville man claimed to have found a 40-year-old woman in his bed.

Waikato police were called to a domestic incident at a house after the man’s mother apparently discovered the naked woman undressing the man in his bed.

The pair had apparently been drinking together at the woman’s house.

But police found there were no grounds for charges to be laid.

Amazingly this is exactly the approach several acquaintances have used every time I see them in the pub. I never realised it was actually a strategy though, and they show no signs of being millionaires (although the pub was just renovated, I suspect on the back of my benevolence).

To solve the ‘youth problem’ — they need to be employed.
So government needs to create an environment (or an economy)
Where;
1. Any ‘youth’ can get a job easily. ie same day.
2. they are able to live on their income.
3. Employers are able to run viable businesses employing people (2 and 3 mean low taxes and compliance costs)
4. Workers via their incomes are able to provide for themselves eg own their own houses etc.
5. Employers own their own facilities and not live on the brink of foreclosure.
Fiddling around the edges with income redistributions is not useful. It’s not a social welfare problem.
Fiddling around with ‘education’ and ‘skills upgrade’ is not useful either. One of the defining modern features of third world countries is endemic unemployment of university graduates.
All of which means SMEs and a reduction in the role of large corporates and foreign ownership. And low debt levels.

1. Any youth (and by definition of youth in the worforce, I’m assuming you are referring to those that have left school and have no – or are not working towards – tertiary qualification) can most probably get a job that will pay what they are skilled for, i.e. McDonalds, or retail.
2. If schools and parents taught financial management to youth, they would be able to live on their income.
3. If you’re going to run a business, it need’s to be profitable. Don’t rely on the State to prop you up.
4. Refer 2.
5. Refer 2 and 3.

One of the biggest problems NZ Inc faces is it’s focus as a tourism destination – probably our biggest export earner, yet tourism workers in general earn less than the average wage. It’s not a way to create wealth – but just get by.

ACC Minister Nick Smith says recent turmoil on international financial markets has reversed the gains the Corporation made on its investments over the past financial year, but will not affect plans to reduce levies.

The Government announced in June that workers and businesses would get a reduction in their levies after ACC, which it labelled insolvent two years ago, bounced back with an expected $2.5 billion surplus last financial year.

Smith said today it was expected that events of the past week would have a negative impact on ACC investments. Although he hadn’t had any specific reports, he had been advised the gains made in June would be “pretty much” reversed.

No they won’t be reversed this election year will they Mr Smith BUT next year will see us in bankruptcy again.

Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock.
The brunette balances their checkbook, then takes their last $600 dollars out west to another ranch where a man has a prize bull for sale.
Upon leaving, she tells her sister, “When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.”
The brunette arrives at the man’s ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she does want to buy it. The man tells her that he can sell it for $599, no less.
After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, “I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.”
The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, “It’s just 99 cents a word.”
Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette only has $1 left. She realizes that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word. After thinking for a few minutes, she nods, and says, “I want you to send her the word, ‘comfortable.'”
The telegraph operator shakes his head. “How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her the word, ‘comfortable’?”
The brunette explains, “My sister’s blonde, she’ll read it very slowly.”

FIVE MINUTES

LOUD SIGH

This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A “Loud Sigh” means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over “Nothing”
THAT’S OKAY

This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can make to a man. “That’s Okay” means that she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

Stupid.” That way you wouldn’t rely on them, would you? You wouldn’t ask
them anything. It would be like, “Excuse me… oops, never mind. Didn’t see
your sign”

It’s like before my wife and I moved.Our house was full of boxes and there was a Wridgeways truck in our driveway. My neighbour comes over and says, “Hey, you moving?”
“Nope. We just pack our stuff up once or twice a week to see how
many boxes it takes.
Here’s your sign.”

A couple of months ago I went fishing with a mate of mine, we pulled his boat into the ramp, I lifted up this big whiting and this idiot on the ramp goes,
“Hey, you catch all them fish?” “Nope. Talked ’em into giving up.
Here’s your sign.”

I was watching one of those animal shows on the Discovery Channel.
There was a guy inventing a shark bite suit. And there’s only one way to test it.
“Alright Jimmy, you got that shark suit on, it looks good…
They want you to jump into this pool of sharks, and you tell us if it hurts
when they bite you.”
“Well, all right, but hold my sign. I don’t wanna lose it”.

Last time I had a flat tyre, I pulled my car into a gas station. The attendant walks out, looks at my car, looks at me, and I SWEAR he said,
“Tyre go flat?” I couldn’t resist. I said, “Nope. I was driving around and
those other three just swelled up on me.
Here’s your sign.”

We were trying to sell our car about a year ago. A guy came over to the house and drove the car around for about 45 minutes. We get back to the house, he gets out of the car, reaches down and grabs the exhaust pipe, then says, “Shit, that’s hot!”
See? If he’d been wearing his sign, I could have stopped him.

I learned to drive an semi-trailer in my days of adventure. Wouldn’t you know I misjudged the height of a bridge. The truck got stuck and I couldn’t get it out no matter how I
tried. I radioed in for help and eventually a cop shows up to take the
report. He went through his basic questioning. Ok.. No problem. I thought sure he was clear of needing a sign…until he asked “So. Is your truck stuck?” I couldn’t help myself!
I looked at him, looked back at the rig and then back to him and said “No I’m delivering a bridge…
Here’s your sign.”

I stayed late at work one night and a co-worker looked at me
and said “Are you still here?” I replied, “No. I left about 10 minutes ago.
Here’s your sign.”

Anybody you know need a sign today?

One day a lady went into a fishing shop to buy her husband a fishing pole for his birthday.

She picked up a really nice looking pole and asked the salesman how much it was. The sales man says, “I am blind but if you give me the pole I can tell how much it is by the weight.”

So the lady gives him the pole and he says, “That pole is worth $45.” She was amazed at how cheap that was.

So then she picked up another really nice pole, hands it to the man and he says, “This pole is worth $55.” she decided that was also really cheap.

And then she picks the nicest looking pole in the place and handed it to the man and he says, “This pole is our best and it is $70.” she told him that she would take it.

As she was getting the fishing pole all rung up, she had to fart really really badly. She decided since the man was blind that it really wouldn’t matter if she farted in front of him so she just let it loose.

All of a sudden the man says, “It all comes up to $80.”

Confused the lady says to him, “But you said the fishing pole was only $70.”

He said, “It is. Its $70 for the fishing pole and $10 for the duck call.”

The priest turns to the altar boy and whispering asks, “Is that Fannie Green?”
The altar boy replies, “No Father, I think it’s just the reflection off her shoes.”

No sooner were the words out of his mouth when, sure enough, a curious Japanese tourist walked to the window, had a peek, and in a thick Japanese accent asked ‘What you sell?’ One of the men replied sarcastically, ‘We’re selling arse-holes.’

Without skipping a beat, the Japanese man said,

Farmer Cres residents furious at holdups

The demolition of state houses on a Lower Hutt street has left it looking like the Gaza Strip, frustrated residents say.

Twenty-seven Housing New Zealand homes in Pomare’s Farmer Cres have been pulled down, with a further 61 earmarked for demolition next month.

Housing NZ has not yet decided what will replace the homes, and it plans to grass over the empty land in the meantime.

Farmer Cres residents and local leaders shared concerns over the delay at a community meeting last night.

One would hope that Housing NZ never rebuild here. What makes these scum think that they are entitled to our money and a new house. Long overdue action and a lesson for the scum. HNZ may just have to do a couple more actions like this before the scum learn to respect the hand that feeds them.
Full marks to Heatley and HNZ. Just don’t cave into the whingers, moaners, Trevors et al.
