Yesterday in GD some guys were bagging the AB’s game against the Springboks.
I watched the replay yesterday PM, and I think they played pretty well generally. The ‘boks never crossed their line, and they just weren’t quite finishing off. And Thompson, mainly, giving away silly penalties enabled Steyn to kick the ‘boks to victory.
Sure, some players didn’t quite step up, but I think with a little bit of luck they could well have won the game. If the same game were played next week by the same team after a further week of teamwork, I reckon they would win.

Its actually a good thing that they lost though. It’ll help keep the focus.

So, what if recidivist solo mothers can only keep their child if they can support the child. I see no reason why they shouldn’t be paid, say $10,000 for a healthy baby by an adoption agency if they fail to meet certain criteria for being able to give the child a decent home. Beats sterilization.

When the state provides welfare benefits, presumably one of the major reasons to do so is to provide for the welfare of the children involved. Should a child be penalised for the decision of the parent? Are the children of one beneficiary entitled to better support than the children of another because the latter parent has become pregnant again while receiving a benefit?

Mikenmild, The whole issue is about responsibility. Not all beneficiarys are entirely responsible for being on a benefit, but I ask you if it is responsible, prudent (or even fair to the contributors) behavior to unnecessarily increase demand on the system?

It is always very difficult to make any sort of judgement about police prosecutions particularly given that the police cannot disclose their hand to the public before the hearing. Even with those reservations, the dropping of charges in this case seems long overdue and it is encouraging to see that the police have taken an enlightened approach.

No, it doesn’t.

I’ll go further, every long term beneficiary (12 months) should be compulsorily sterilized (a supply of corks and a sharp-ish knife is all that is needed 😉 ) only reversible after 12 months earning their own living.

The distortions inherent in the welfare system

Diminish the advantages to working. Would you pay to work? Beneficiary’s often loose money when starting employment.
Increases the black economy Creates a large pool of idyll persons, Who will often work for cash or find criminal enterprise a useful way to full their time.
Encourages long term dependance which has become generational.
Encourages the proliferation of those less likely to be of benefit to society increasing the gap between rich and poor.
Taxes the middle income earners and the single no dependents, heavily The very people who increase the wealth of this country.

Yes there are genuine needy, there are also those who strive to get of the benefit who lift their aspirations higher than dole day

We need to encourage responsible behavior, or penalize irresponsible behavior.

Welcome to the club.
Sounds bad when first diagnosed but for most people it’s a matter of learning how your body metabolizes food.
Used to be nice to ignore food combinations but no so anymore.

The silver lining to that cloud is free doctors visits once a year, free hospital eye checks etc and other subsidies.
So I might have (well controlled) type 2 Diabetes but I know I haven’t got much else wrong as I am monitored every few months.

I least that’s something I am actually getting some tax back on

I agree. Though I hope it also prompts a review of their procedures for recognising and dealing with autistic and other communication-impaired suspects so that we don’t get any more having “accidents” during the arrest process. It’s not always easy to recognise and can be difficult to deal with, especially in a pressure situation and to send police into the field without training is unfair both on them and on the autistic people they’ll inevitably encounter at some point (though that doesn’t, of course, excuse responding by arranging for “accidents” to occur).

So now they’ve got that off their desk, maybe they’ll find time to respond to my formal complaint against Michael Laws for “inciting, counselling or attempting to procure a summary offence”, namely assaults on people suspected of looting. It was lodged in March. Or is it that stalwart public support of the worst excesses of the police earns you a free pass from even being investigated over an alleged offence?

Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay $1.

The sixth would pay $3.

The seventh would pay $7.

The eighth would pay $12.

The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers”, he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20”. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his “fair share?”

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).

The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).

The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).

The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).

The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. “I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!” “Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!” “That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!” “Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!” The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Since MMP Peter Dunne and United Future have had more influence on government and on policies that have actually been put into practice than any other small party, and Dunne has had more policy influence than most other individual MPs. Not flashy controversial stuff, but mostly sensible stuff that doesn’t attract attention.

Dunne outlines key child support law changes

The way child support is calculated will be changed to reflect the actual cost of raising children today, the degree of shared care between parents and the income of both parents, Revenue Minister Peter Dunne announced today.

Mr Dunne said many parents had a real sense that the current system was unfair.

“And they have been right. We have reviewed it, we have called for public submissions and we have listened to them, and I think the changes we are now proposing reflect the very strong feedback we received,” he said.

That sounds just like the Your NZ proposed principles of addressing a problem, consulting, listening, and acting.

9. From the dates it seems that my daughter was conceived at Euro Disney; maybe it really is the Magic Kingdom.

10. So much about that night is a blur. The only thing that I remember for sure is Delia Smith did a program about eggs earlier in the evening. If I’d have stayed in and watched more TV rather than going to the party at 46 Drive, mine might have remained unfertilised.

Not so much relaunching, more like adding a regional representative component to an established party foundation. If that part of the party redevelopment gets enough electorate support then it’s got a good chance of getting somewhere.

Most people just moan about politics. Some people try to find ways of improving it, and use the means to do it that have the most chance of success.

Salient and succinct as usual. The haters can keep on hating and auditioning for Survivor Rabble-rouser. Not pointing the finger at specific targets in this forum; factions of both the left and right are guilty of this tactic. Historically, Centre parties, most recently UnitedFuture, have and always will attract the ire of those supposedly ideologically pure movements as they attract the disillusioned that once comprised the core of the support of both major parties, which in turn plunders the vote of the extreme of the spectrum.
The Centre is perhaps lacking in charisma. You don’t find many flaming firebrands occupying that political ground; ‘compromise’ isn’t the sexiest word in the dictionary, nor is the tenet of progress on the areas that can be agreed upon’.
A John Key led National Party and UnitedFuture have a great deal in common on the basis of these two principles alone. If voters can be convinced of the stability this provides the nation they will cast their party vote for UnitedFuture.
United future for measurable economic and social progress.
Or: There is the Left, there is the Right and there is the Centre Path.

Pete,

Fair call for deciding on an existing party. I am sure it is a tough job indeed to try to create a political party from scratch.

How do manage to reconcile the apparent policy differences between UF and OURNZ, particularly around the Reserve Bank and taxation? UF do not appear to want to dismantle the current RNBZ governance or monetary system, nor to replace existing taxes with a transactional tax. Yet both of these would seem to be core planks of OURNZ policy.

bhudson – common confusion, I floated Your NZ, not OURNZ. When I started looking around I checked out OURNZ thinking we might have something in common but I disagreed with most things I looked at. I’m working through the UF policies and I mostly agree with most of them, which is as good as you can expect.

Now will someone ask Helen Kelly what she is going to do about her power account?

On Q+A last Sunday, when asked who she bought her power from she said it was contact.
Rather surprising considering she was there attacking the policy of asset sales and trumpeting support gor Govt. retaining the three power companies it owns rather than sharing that ownership with ordinary Kiwi’s.
A contradiction in her loyalties and raises a question of her integrity in defense of that retaining of that ownership.

Now however she is caught between her self interest of lower power costs to her residence, Govt. retaining ownership of the assets and the rising price of electricity from her current supplier who, is raising the need to to increase power prices, both for themselves and other generators.

Quite a conflicted position for her to be in.
