…Key can talk about being ‘non ideological’, ‘whatever works’, etc – but all of his policies are standard, right-wing ideology (none of which show any signs of working, as yet)…

…Just to set down my own views on positioning yet again: Labour doesn’t need to move to the center, because Labour is the center…

I guess political leanings are relative to the leaning of the view, but I suspect there will be a few in Labour’s union faction in particular that wouldn’t claim to be ‘centre’.

And more than a few here who would scoff at National’s supposed degree of rightness.

Obama Tries Again To End Oil Subsidies

Industry officials and many Republicans in Congress have argued that cutting the tax breaks would lead to higher petrol prices, raising costs on oil companies and affecting their investments in exploration and production.

So much for Republicans believing in a free market. Mind you, the vote didn’t pass when Democrats held the majority either. Seems everyone is in the lobbyists pocket.

Pete, Key’s ideaology is as right wing as my nana. And she had Mickey Savage (The real one, not the broken arsed sorry excuse for a lawyer) staring down from her mantlepiece. For eg, middle class welfare. Yes, he would cop a slaying from the vast majority of NZ’ers who feel entitled to it, but grow a pair. We cant afford it. Stop reprocessing our taxes, tax us less, FFS, stop the redistribution.

The idealogical left will seek to claim the hallowed “middle ground”, becuase they know to own it is to hold power. They are as middle ground as my left nut. And thats left.

It would be good if a debate could be had about “energy subsidies”, especially those ones that try to prop up hopeless alternative energy companies. People might even find out what was defined as an “energy subsidy” and who exactly is affected: here’s a hint: it’s not Exxon Mobil and the other biggies, let alone the state oil outfits that own something like 93% of global oil reserves).

But before that debate happens we would have to have people who don’t rely on brain-dead local NZ rags who simply repeat the editorial headline soundbites of basic US election-year wedge politics played by a Presidential candidate.

A huge problem appears to have occurred in London on the leadup to the Olympic Games.

De Coubertin (a Frenchman) in the Charter said that the Official Languages of the Games shall be English and French.
Now the Frencies are up in arms that the street signs etc and all Olympic publications are not yet printed in French, and they should be – so.

Understand that the have been told to get stuffed. Its 960 years since Britain was invaded – so there.

Who can personally remember a National government that didn’t include at least a shade of pink around the edges? For all the moaning & bitching on this & other forums, if National returned to its policies of circa 1920 we would be guaranteed Labour/Green/Hone’s Haters governments for the rest of time or at least until bankruptcy.

The electorate has moved to the left. Those who rubbish JK for competing for the centre ground ignore the fact that such high ideals would doom the political right to perpetual opposition.

Better pragmatic National policies than embittered socialists headed by an endless line up of clones of Dear Leader.

@ EWS – I take a different view over Edwards’ spat with Labour. He is a former Labour candidate, a long-time provider of services to the party, and a personal friend of Helen Clark. His departure from Labour would be a blow to the party, and to Shearer’s leadership in particular, as it would merely reopen all the wounds that supposedly healed in December.

@Keeping Stock – Edwards leaving might be a blow to old Labour, there’s still a few clinging to old idealistic ideologies like him.

But I think the political world is evolving into the age of pragmatists. This may well have been started by Lange/Douglas, practiced across the centre by Peter Dunne for some time, touched on by Clarke/Cullen (until they swung to buy votes), taken to a new level by John Key and now embraced (in words anyway) in his own way by David Shearer.

Old lefties seem unable to adapt to the 21st century, so they choose to jump ship instead.

Interesting and I shall read the whole Edwards piece. But here’s the thing that struck me your comment that …

… and his comments in the section you quoted:

Tony Blair’s ‘third way’, a significant influence on the Fifth Labour Government, was really just a watered down version of Douglas’s ‘trickle-down’ economics. The ‘third way’ was, by definition, a ‘middle-way’, neither one thing nor the other and ill-suited to political idealism of any stripe – a Clayton’s political philosophy.

Well who were these people who allowed this to happen? Why none other than Helen Clark (and Michael Cullen and Heather Simpson). Is Edwards only awake to this now? What else – aside from blind, partisan loyalty and perhaps personal loyalty to Clark – could have kept him from this revelation that has now only come with the ascension of Shearer?

Frankly it seems incoherent and the heart of that incoherence is the stubborn refusal of ‘socialists’ like Edwards to accept that the practical implementations of social democracy in the West are increasingly failing in the 21st century. He’s hardly the only one of course.

The law is generous to people with HIV who do not tell a sexual partner
they have the virus. They have no obligation to inform their partner as
long as they practise “safe sex”. It is only if they do not protect the
unwitting partner to that extent that their failure to disclose their
condition becomes a criminal offence, though not as serious an offence
as it really is. Thanks to a court ruling last week, the offence will
now be regarded more seriously – but only for the purposes of accident
compensation.

It would be good if a debate could be had about “energy subsidies”

Well the simple answer is that there is a moral imperative to incentivise the use of sustainable energy fuels as opposed to the moral imperative to disincentivise the use of fossil fuels.

But on the face of it, the Republican argument that a removal of the subsidies will lead to higher oil prices is facile nonsense. Like milk, the price of oil is set by international demand and speculation so any subsidy an American oil company receives goes straight into their pockets.

Obama signed an executive order yesterday which some say is “totalitarian” and nationalizes everything.
Here’s what Pamela Geller said about it –

It calls for a draft, but not just a draft. A civilian draft, of “persons of outstanding experience or ability” without compensation. If they think they need you, they can compel you to work for the government for nothing.

They can, under this order, restrict civilian travel by any mode, including (probably) foot travel. They can ration food. They can restrict water usage, even from private wells. They can ration any and all drugs, including OTC and vitamins. They can collectivize farms. They can take over all energy production, including home solar units.
It also allows for drafting civilians. If they have need of your skills, they can compel you to work for no compensation.

All this not in a time of war, but in time of “National Emergency” (several EO national emergency states already in place) or even in Peacetime.

I’m not too sure how to interpret it myself (not being the lawyerly type), so I’m not sure if people are just getting too excited by it. If it is what they so though, Obama is doing the power grab in a big way. One of the commentators at Atlas says –

Authorization for the Obamacare monstrosity to takeover the healthcare system completely.. Now the Supremes will be forced to decide that Obamacare is Constitutional because Obama has made HHS essential to the defense of the nation.

There is precedent for this sort of Commerce Clause hammering of the Constitution..

That decision was made during war at a time when no Justice would want to be seen as interfering with America’s ability to wage Total War..

Obama has just made Obamacare and it’s HHS ‘necessary’ for the defense of the nation.

Is there anyone left in society that truly believes that a person who is aware
that they are HIV positive does not have an obligation to inform their sexual partner beforehand ?

Regardless of if it’s intended to be protected or otherwise sex
and allow the partner to make the call.

The only group who seem to see that that answer to that question is not obvious are homosexuals.

How sick is that ?

Is there an element of, “well i got it, it’s your fault if you got it too, why didn’t you ask ?”

I belive we have allowed anyone who has any sort of positive view to be yelled down by a miniscule minority of 12 who have the media reporting every unchecked fact that is spouted.

Everyday I am amazed and astounded because I meet people who quote “facts” at me because itt was on the “news” and therefore a fact, when a quick flick around blogs of all hues shows that what is served up at 6.00 pm is utter crap.

Bread and circus’s was a sophisticated political ploy along side what is spawned by our television as news.

Well, I am most definitely not “a homo” bereal, but I am prepared to support you…there can be absolutely no justification for not telling your partner you have HIV…

I remember when AIDS first surfaced in the early 80’s..back when it was literally a death sentence, the only question was how long you were on death row…the AIDS foundation fought (successfully) tooth and nail to NOT have HIV made a notifiable disease…which completely defies logic…if a doctor is consulted by a person with TB the doctor is obliged to report than person to the authoraties, and if necessary the person will be compulsorily treated because of the risk to society…but there is no such obligation on the doctor who is consulted by an HIV positive person, even if he/she is – say – a prostitute, and readily admits to having unprotected sex with clients….I see absolutely no logic in that…

What really pisses me off is that the AIDS foundation gets so much government funding to put out misinformation. The first priority should be to reduce the incidence of HIV in NZ.

If that was a priority what did they lobby so hard opposing the screening migrants for HIV? The only reason I can think of for them taking that position was so the the incidence of heterosexual HIV would increase so the could say more often HIV is not just a gay disease.

Does anyone think the AIDS Foundation should continue to get government funding?

You mentioned last night that your broadband connection was less than perfect because of rain. Is it a wireless feed & if so how badly does wind/rain affect it?

Our local copper wiring is rotten & an optimist would describe my connection as unstable. I may have a chance to go wireless but it seems pointless if it doesn’t offer an improvement.

I am on vodaphone mobile broad band. Its $50 for 2G and $10 for another 2G at present
I am out in the boondocks,langs beach, My mobile broadband is marginal at the best of times out here I sometimes don’t get a phone signal due to atmospherics. Even in town the bandwidth is to small it stops or slows right down at 8- 9 am as people get to work and again from 3:30 -6pm as students etc get home
Apparently telecom is better
I also use a old cell phone rather than a vodem as the reception is more reliable
I think you are talking of a different system than mobile broadband .
.
I only use it cause i have not figured out how to get copper wire to a swing mooring yet. 🙂

Difficult…yes, but much easier than to getting Telecom to replace or repair a rotten cable. I should have really fast ADSL as although I live in the sticks I’m only about 800 metres from a ‘green cabinet’. Fat hope……the copper connection from there to the house is stuffed.

Ring faults & they swear on their mothers’ graves that the line is in perfect order. Mind you this comes from people for whom Punjabi is their first language & I suspect that they are paid a bonus to frustrate any complaint that may cause Telecom to spend more than $25 per district per year on maintenance.

If it isn’t a fault then my neighbours further up the valley must be HD porn addicts.

The local DOC warden in a small town in northland had arrested Rangi for killing and eating a wheka. The man went before a judge to plead his case. After pleading guilty, but with an explanation, the judge asked him why he did it.

“I was just trying to feed my hungry family,” Rangi told the judge, “and I’ve never done anything like that before.”

Ive had a similar experience with a power company The ripple controller went on the power meter. It was four visits plus a total rewire of the hot water cylinder before they had to admit it was their fault not ours As I had told them right from the start. Do you have any sprear ark plans the rain is getting a little persistent up here

Maybe FE Smith could give us some insight into the legality of bumming sumone without telling them you are HIV positive.

No. I sold the last set of I had in the interests of frugality (plus the fact that I reside 270metres ASL). Mind you its getting a bit damp down this way too. It’s from the SE though so it will be cold but relatively light rainfall.

What has me concerned although is the way the soil temperature is dropping like a stone. Great summer but an early winter is going to make the feed situation tighter sooner.

Two planes have been diverted away from Auckland due to crosswinds.

A spokesman from Auckland Airport says one plane was diverted to Wellington, but it’s not know where the second one went to.

He says they’re both Air New Zealand flights and it was the airline’s call to divert them.
