Nasska and DG: It’s that time of the year, what with the miserable weather. We had some friends around on the weekend, and they helped us devour the hind leg of one of my well-cared-for animals. Along with roast potatoes, kumara, veges, mint sauce … mmmmm.

(And just to p!ss off some of ya – yes we said grace before partaking).

On another note – how many clones have you supposedly made of yourself David? It occurred to me, you should total up all the comments all those mini-DGs have made and see if you break the Kiwiblog record for most prolific commenter!

But we all mellow with age.

BTW, I live in Tauranga if that helps, and I’m a semi-retired builder – happily married to a lovely lady, three kids and seven grandchildren.

Of course The Warehouse has done its thing here too, in every small town. You don’t notice it in places like Akld, but it does it there as well. The interesting part about the model, as the article explains, it’s like a vice, so as things get worse, with more and more businesses and peripheral businesses closing, more and more people depend on buying from it because of its cheap prices.

The thing I don’t get is, that if Walmart has done this in the homeland of capitalism, and that if people hold up Walmart as the epitomy of the free-market, then what does this say about the perspicacity of those of us who think the only thing with capitalism is that it’s not done often enough and hard enough in enough places and the world would be much better if we just did it more, period?

Wouldn’t it be amazing to get 2.7 billion in dividends? I mean, I fantasize about winning big Wednesday @ 10m and telling the boss to go to hell and making my loved ones happy and still having enough money invested to get a $250k income for the rest of my life. As my brother tells me, the definition of rich is one can live off the interest on your interest. I wonder if 2.7b in dividends qualifies.

Walmart have used their buying power to influence wages as well. If they are the only game in town there’s little employees can do to influence the downward pressure on their wages.

Walmart have been instrumental in driving manufacturing offshore as well. Capitalism without viable competition benefits the few.

Don the Kiwi – it’s good to see some ordinary life family stuff, put’s a more human slant on the blog – and it can help humanise discussion too knowing more than a few onscreen words.

I live at a different end of the country (I have an aunt in Tauranga) and am not a Catholic but probably have many more similarities than differences overall. Yep, I’m an All Black fan, am married to a lovely lady, may be in the same age vicinity, and have six grandchildren (some step).

I think Christian and non-Christian alike have a responsibility to respect each other’s beliefs or non-beliefs. Most of us get on pretty well in real life, we should be able to find a way to do that on blogs as well.

Microsoft has officially come out in support of two pieces of legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in Washington state.
Microsoft, which is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, explained its support by saying that discrimination of any kind lowers the quality of employees that the company is able to hire. A statement on The Official Microsoft Blog titled “Marriage Equality in Washington State Would Be Good for Business” reads in part:

Thanks Pete. The majority of my mates aren’t Catholic either, but we enjoy eachothers compnay, a few beers, a lot of good natured banter – religious or other wise. What gets really up my wick is continuous and negative abusive bashing against people who simply express their POV on a religous – or any other topic, whether it be agreement or disagreement, and then descend into ad homs.

I’ll be very surprised if the Warehouse capture any more market share. They face fairly stiff competition in most cities now, eg Postie Plus, Briscoes, Mitre 10 Mega. In fact, I think their star may waning right now.

IMHO NZ retail is about spot on as it is…..enough competition to keep pricing competitive but still returning sufficient profit to be viable.

Seriously though its called huffing according to the media. You just know when it gets a name like that some serious criminal brains are involved.

But man. What have we come to, we have kids who should be in the 6th and 7th form getting hold of a gas bottle and sniffing it. And you know what they’re doing right. Mouth over the outlet. Turn the tap. Take a huge lungfull of what – LPG? Hold it. Exhale.

Hur hur. Chortle chortle. While other kids their age sit in school and learn about bio and chem and math.

Sad isn’t the word. It would be understandable if we had thousands of people/sq km and no schools except for 5% of the richest population and most people lived in corrugated shacks and died when they were 45-50, tops. You could understand this, if we had that.

WTF is wrong with us, that we put up with this shit, in this country, when all those dudes needed, was some decent fucking parents and role models. And if they didn’t get it from people who were borne into that role, that they got it from a system that gave a fuck enough to look at them when they were 5, 6, 7 and 8 and made sure they stayed on track and when they started straying at 9 and 10 it stepped in and kicked arse and took names and said fuck you, to the do gooders who said: don’t interfere.

WTF is wrong with us as a species that we can do all sorts of other shit, but we can’t even consistently bring up kids with love notwithstanding love is free, costs nothing? That used to be the basics. Now, it seems, it’s advanced rocket science 901, albeit we have plenty of game boys we can apparently lend out for free, if anyone needs a babysitter, complete with wholesome role models on how to become a real good member of this here human race.

I know most of us avoid it, it’s how we let those who lead their kids into it, do it so easily.

And many of those who do it, don’t set out to do it on purpose, I mean, who would set out to have their son or daughter in that situation. No-one. But it happens, to increasing numbers.

And we aren’t stepping in, because of why? Because it’s too impolite?

Lots of reasons, but really, none of them complex really are they. All of them boil down to a lack of bureaucratic balls to stand in and say, enough, no more, not acceptable, won’t happen.

Hell identifying these kids isn’t hard. Most of us could name the schools to watch, the streets, even the families. And yet it still happens.

An earthquake in Tokyo today too – around 2.30pm NZT. The immediate reports said it was 5.4 on the Richter Scale and the centre was 100kms down in Tokyo Bay. It really rocked the building I was in and it fair gave me the shits! Even the locals were crapping themselves.

Looks like there is considerable seismic activity on the ‘ring of fire’…..

Yup, which is why I’m amazed at the naivety of those who claim, by way of tidal measures, that islands are disappearing due to ‘rising sea levels’. The land on which we live isn’t connected to a solid sphere… we’re floating, and moving, and parts of the crust are moving up while others parts are moving down as the plates battle it out. Just like they always have.
