Shearer on mining

On BFM, David Shearer said on mining in Northland:

“I think we would be, you know, behind it.”

“I guess it’s only right to look at that as an option”

“Everything that comes into New Zealand has to be mined somewhere, so the fact that we’re going to say no mining here but import it from everywhere else seems a bit sort of incongruous to me.

Now I agree with David Shearer that it is hypocrisy to import things dependent on mining, yet say no to mining in New Zealand.

I do wonder though how his pro-mining stance fits with this photo, of David waving a placard saying “Ours. Not mines” with a placard behind him of John Key as Hitler. Now of course David will say that he is only against mining on Schedule 4 land, but I do wonder if his fellow marchers shared his nuanced views.

As I said, it is good to see the more nuanced view.
