Some good Whale

September 26th, 2012 at 2:22 pm by David Farrar

Three interesting posts by Whale.

  1. An analysis of NZ blogs by their readability. The raw data is here.
  2. A Colin Craig pamphlet with Craig as an Obama type Messiah, trying to entice youth to join. The hilarious highlight is the quote from Colin Craig which is “Great leadership is about doing what is right, not about trying to be popular”, right alongside his demand for binding referenda!!
  3. A post on Wesley School, which in 2007 attacked National’s food in schools policy saying it was an insult to their parents, yet in 2012 being used by Labour as a campaign prop for their food in schools policy.

The Craig thing is more accurately Pop Art Warhol-esque than Obama-esque. A visual graphic comparison is here:

Whale is pumping today. A must read is his Bob Jones – http://www.whaleoil.co.nz/2012/09/bob-jones-on-the-treaty-gravy-train/

When you look at all whale oils post you really wonder about NZs continued presence in the first world. Not only that … all the things he talks about used to be called “corruption”. so thats how transperncy international gets away with it….

@iMP, in the immortal words of the Tui brewery: Yeah Right!

You trying to say that the impact of that image from when Obama used it has nothing to do with Colin Craig choosing the same style? Do you also have a tower in France you are looking to sell?

I do wonder if Colin Craig wasn’t a Christian would there be such a concerted series of attacks on him from the like of DPF and others?

No Bevan, the image was actually chosen by the Young Conservatives according to a commentator on WOil, but it is not an appropriation of the Obama poster (which was itself appropriated) but a rendering of a long tradition of Pop Art (view the link). Cam Slat’s point was that Craig mis-judged because he wants to appear like Obama, but as I argue, the poster is as like M Jackson, or Jackie O, or Mao, or Elvis as it is Obama. The design follows a long Pop Art template rather than an Obama-template. It’s not Obama’s anyway.

It’s just long-bow stuff from WOil who seems to have it in for CCraig regardless. And anyway, what’s wrong with it, even if he did? I mean, modern art is about appropriation and quotation. is it a crime to have some art that uses the same colours as Obama. Shock horror.

    Your comment is utter bullshit.
Looking at the two side by side they are near identical and in my view CC must have his brains in his arse to knock off a copy like that.
CC has money , why isnt he getting better media advice? Is his wife or boyfriend “helping” and he is too weak to sack them?

He keeps downplaying his Christian and upplaying his whacky, perhaps that’s got more to do with the criticism.

I thought the Obama image was classy when I first saw it, but I seriously cringed when I saw Craig’s version. I don’t have a vendetta against the guy like Whale does, but FFS that’s a terrible piece of marketing material.

The poor sap Colin Craig, has no one told him that politics and good intentions are totally incompatible

And No 2 cents it has nothing to do with christianity and all to do with his idiocy

So Colville, you don’t think the CHE and Obama posters have anything in common? The style of the ‘Obama’ art has been copied about a thousand times since 2008, by almost everyone (Google “Obama Poster 2008″). But that’s ok, its just CC who isn’t allowed to use the same Pop Art template (and is called an idiot for doing so).

Binding referenda would be a disaster and is by far the Conservatives’ most dangerous policy. It helped to drive California to bankruptcy and leads to all sorts of poorly thought out reactionary legislation. Do I want to pay less tax? Sure I’ll vote for that. Do I also want the government to spend heaps more on education/health/corrections/free ponies for everyone? Sure I’ll vote for that too.

Philonz, I agree CIR would be a disaster. However, a Voters Veto on issues like the anti smacking legislation and homosexual marriage and adoption would help promote democracy in a number of ways. One of them being inncreasing voter turnout.

I never thought I would vote for Winston Peters because he is a liar but so is John Key and many other MPs. My first preference will be for the Conservatives but I will decide close to the election depending on the polling of the two parties.

When 87% of the voters are opposed to a piece of legislation and it gets passed that is not democratic.

Colville – I’m with iMP on this one. Click on his 2:30pm link, Obama doesn’t own this graphic style – it’s a generic pop-art graphic effect from the 1960s.

You seem to be getting your tits in a tangle about Colin Craig using it, but loving your Obamassiah using the style – your bias is showing.
