Maher on Islamists

October 1st, 2012 at 2:00 pm by David Farrar

This is from a couple of years ago, but I think still relevant. Note that his criticism is about Islamists, not Islam or Muslims generally.

Maher is generally regarded as being on the liberal side of US politics.

Has anyone seen his documentary Religulous? Is it worth getting out for $4 a week or is it just preaching to the converted?

Maher is left-wing, staunch left-wing TV personality.
Last February he donated one million dollars to Obama’s campaign. Enough said.

“…I think it’s wonderful that Obama is reaching out…”

Yeah, like at the UN last week: “…The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet…”

Can you imagine the shit-storm if GWB had said the same thing and substituted the last word as “Messiah”.

Very interesting reasoning, whether you are Atheist, Agnostic or Christian.

Obama is currently assassinating Islamists with drone attacks all over Pakistan, Yemen and Afghanistan. Then when the Muslims come out to do the neighbourly thing and search for survivors Obama sends down another missile to kill them too.

The better term to use is “militant islam.” Islam is too generic. See “Photo of our Times” which puts this debate into some current political and NZ context.

Bill Maher? This is the best that a right-wing blog can do? Was there nothing on “Islamism” from Dennis Miller, who manages to be both funnier and more erudite than the execrable Maher?

Note that his criticism is about Islamists, not Islam or Muslims generally.

So no chance of a “Piss Koran” sitting on the desk beside him then?

Of course not. There’s brave, transgressive comedy – and then there’s having a death wish. As the far funnier Mark Steyn pointed out the other day in his article Bowing to the Mob:

Last year Hillary Clinton went to see the Broadway musical Book of Mormon “We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others”? The Book of Mormon’s big showstopper is “Hasa Diga Eebowai” which apparently translates as “F*** you, God.” The U.S. secretary of state stood and cheered.

Why does Secretary Clinton regard “F*** you, God” as a fun toe-tapper for all the family but “F*** you, Allah” as “disgusting and reprehensible”? The obvious answer is that, if you sing the latter, you’ll find a far more motivated crowd waiting for you at the stage door.

Bill Maher’s careful parsing of “Islamists” and “Islam” indicates that he understands that last point as well as Hillary Clinton and everybody else in the West.

Has anyone seen his documentary Religulous?

Only the bits of it that I commented on a couple of weeks ago here; which is a YouTube clip of the section on Muslims.

But of course the real point is that it’s been up there for at least a couple of years and yet I’ve not heard of Bill being invited in for a few questions at midnight by the FBI, or instead getting the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to phone him and ask him to back off, or the Obama administration asking Google to pull it. When you consider that it’s not apparently up to we in the West to judge what is and is not offensive to Muslims and that Maher donated $US 1 million towards Obama’s election I’d have thought such actions to be vital in avoiding violence.

Perhaps Bill’s just been lucky so far?

UN aha-these innocents who turn up after a droning are probably like you and me doing the humanitarian thing, looking after kith and kin however they are nowhere to be seen when Nato troops get shot or our good men are targeted by roadside bombs. They are nowhere to be seen when their possessions (women) are mistreated and education is denied to women and children ,all the tenets of the UN convention that you probably agree with but ignore and would never defend to the death because it is their war, their problem, their right to be culturally different. How perverse. But of course you further justify your indifference by thinking it is all about oil. let them kill themselves, after all it has nothing to do with us. I agree, but I don’t moralise on it or condemn the US,I just regard the killers of Nato and allied troops as a bunch of gutless selfish wonders.
