The days of tiny “shoebox” apartments in Auckland could come back if a new rule in the unitary plan is passed.
The Auckland Council draft unitary plan is proposing to reduce the minimum apartment size from 35 square metres to 30sq m plus a minimum balcony space of 8sq m.
This must be what Labour has in mind for under $300,000!

Why have a minimum at all? If people WANT to buy 30sqm, or 20sqm apartments, why should this not be allowed? Let the market decide what size apartments are built and bought.

We can’t have it both ways.
Either a first home (2 persons no kids starter) for say the first 4 or 5 years while some equity is accumulating is the answer or it is not. I happen to think it is (like back in 1967 a mini flat in Mt Eden to start with).
Youngsters need to cut their cloth, a City apartment for their first up lifestyle has huge positive cost benefits so lets not stay fixated on a quarter acre 3 bedroom up market all flash facilities first up house … and

Small apartments in large blocks will become slums where owners or tenants are effectively held as prisoners by ethnic crime gangs. Think Porirua or Mangere on a vertical plane as opposed to horizontal.

If you’d ever been to East Berlin, you’d know that the apartments there are much nicer and larger than they are in New Zealand. Especially for the money they cost.

I am no fan of Len Brown, but I commend him for putting these issues squarely on the table. I think that established residents in leafy suburbs have a disproportionate amount of political clout with respect to Council land use decisions. The Council should be reaching out to those with disproprtionately less political clout, especially those with reasonable expectations and see what their needs are. They may be quite happy to have a CBD ‘shoebox’ as their first dwelling rather than ‘drive and ride’ from some small flat in Tuakau, Waiuku, etc. Se my comments on equivalent item at Whaleoil and let me know if I am like Stattler or Wardolf:

Population increase is government policy. Land can’t be “supplied” without infrastructure and the overburdened taxpayers/ratepayers pay for that.

I have lived inside a 35sq m apartment in Bangkok and it is not funny. Once you put down a bed and a table and a washing space there is not much left. If you live in 35 sq m you really do have to love your wife . It would be dificult to add children .
Vote:The outside balcony 8sq m is usually the washing line . In my residence at Bangkok the residents were a shifting group. Many of the apartments were held by people who only visited Bangkok.
Every day here in NZ my wife just stands out on our lawn and trees and looks at the sky in happiness.

pq – you are implying all housing should be suitable for at least three people. Why cannot people have access to housing suitable for one person if it suits their needs. I know someone in London in a ex-council apartment block where owners can rent a bedroom/shower for their guests. This sort of ‘outside the square’ thinking is needed in NZ. If someone in a ‘shoebox’ gains a partner, child, etc they just sell and buy something bigger.

hj…..Libertarians would be happy to let people live as they choose….and can afford. Housings not a right….and theres certainly no such right as a right to a roomy 1/4 ache section at someone elses expense.
Get the bloody local and National Governments out of the equation altogether and problem solved….by people making choices for themselves.
