How could you spend the time?

May 14th, 2013 at 11:00 am by David Farrar

Stuff reports:

A security inmate was locked in a visiting booth with his partner for hours because of the “poor practice” of staff, a report into the incident says.

The partner had driven to Rimutaka Prison from Opotiki last November and was granted an extra 30 minutes.

They were put in a non-contact booth and became worried when their time elapsed and no-one came to get them.

After they spent several hours yelling, the woman smashed an observation window but was unable to escape. Three hours later, another prisoner heard their yells and alerted the supervision officer.

Unless the room is set up in such a way that they are entirely physically segregated, I’d welcome several hours in a room with my partner if I was a prisoner!

The answer is in the article where it says that they were put in a “non-contact booth” Now that is what I would call cruel and unusual punishment and needs UN intervention citing the International Agreement on the Rights of Prisoners not to mention the Howard League and assorted clapped-out lawyers.

Ahh yip, thats what the term “non contact” actually means,
While I am not sure NZ goes the full nine yards and has 2-way phones on the walls as the only way of verbal communication,

There will certainly be no way to touch or pass anything through any voice holes….

Several hours locked in a room with no toilets?

That could be very unpleasant for some people.

The fuckwit is ONLY in prison because he didn’t show other people any respect, either individuals or society!

Been locked in myself a couple of times. Not for that length of time however. Trying to get the attention of the screws can be a problem. You really just wait until somebody wanders past and hope it is soon.

The observation window is, of course, to the outside of the cell, but if it was the visitors side then it may not have been near any body who could help. Or hear!

Non-contact booths are just what they sound like and are a pain in the neck for visiting counsel. They often have a small window to pass things through, but it makes taking a client through the disclosure a rigmarole.

Even in a non-contact booth, & using only visual aids & depending how long you’d been incarcerated I reckon you’ve taken up about 3 minutes, sure you might be able to it more than once but you quickly run out of clean socks then what?
