Well, a remarkable observation from the former Minister of Revenue. If they had filed a false return instead of following the rules, the Electoral Commission would never have known UF failed its registration requirements. A full monty whinge that they are somehow hard done by because of a set of rules that they broke. Rules with consequences. But he says, rules that need to be changed because he is now inconvenienced. How does the fact that they could have gone undetected in filing a false return justify a change to the rules? How would he feel about this principle operating in an income tax context? But then, Dunne is no stranger to moral equivalence where it is fair, reasonable and sensible.

But yes, it does appear to be a serious threat and a rather dangerous one if it is big enough and headed straight for us (of course we frequently get hit with smaller ones, that actually I believe create diamonds in some cases)

I don’t know anything about the science at all, but I presume they are on a predetermined path and are just as likely to hit us, as avoid us, and there isn’t really a lot that can be done to change that?

I have some sympathy for the plight of Dunne with his trouble with membership ( I is one!)
They have put their hand up saying that people have moved/died/havent paid etc and that they are doing an internal audit and will resubmit. They submit 500 eletronic copied and get told to fuck off only signed paper copies are allowed. I mean FFS is this 1993? I am surprised they dont demand faxes! I see now they have relented and will allow a scaned copy of a signed piece of paper. But why not a electronic copy with proof of payment?
Fair enuf Dunny and Co could and should have been on the ball and have this sorted prior. Deregister one day and apply the next. But its very easy to see the problems in hind sight.
You can bet both your balls that Winston First could not provide 500 signed paper memberships that would withstand an audit.

The great predicted storm has turned into a it of a fizzer. It’s a bit cool, windy and wet but for a southerly straight rom the Antarctic it’s nothing out of the ordinary, it’s not even bitter.

What’s with the climate when you can’t even get a decent southerly blast?

Colville – the stupid thing about it is the Electoral Commission want signed documentation (scanned or not) – so they can verify valid membership. So it isn’t even seen as proof, it is to enable them to prove it. That doesn’t make sense.

I agree though that it’s been a major ballsup by the party.

The ironic thing is that without all this hoo-ha the party would have continued to fade away. The publicity has sparked a major resergence in membership – from what I can gather it’s something close to 1500 now.

This is an opportunity for a rejuvenation of the party. There’s plenty of work to be done to take advantage of the renewed interest, but the opportunity is now there. And without the de-registration (and Winston) it wouldn’t have arisen.

Excellent lines from Lindsay on the whore Dunne:
There’s little else of note. His big 2002 “common-sense” policy plank, the Families Commission, was doomed from the outset, having been neutered by Labour’s politically correct refusal to define a family. National should have dumped it in 2008 but needed Dunne as much as he needed them. It’s a goner now, much of the funding shifted to more practical initiatives in 2012 (how mad did that make Dunne?)

Will anyone miss his annual scorecard on fellow parliamentarian’s behaviour? An eccentric exercise by a pompous man who rated his own behaviour rather highly, his confession that the actions precipitating his ministerial demise were “stupid” at long last displayed some overdue humility. Cathartic hopefully.

Labour faces an interesting quandary with Peter Dunne. Is he truly finished, or does Ohariu still support their man. Given how minor his transgressions seem to be, he may well be re-elected. Dunne has already indicated receptiveness to switching camps with his recent vote against the latest employment law amendments put up by the Govt.

If Labour is struggling to find the numbers to form a government at the next election, it is entirely plausible that they will need Dunne to form a majority. They may want to take it easy on flogging him now as it will be remembered come the evening of the election.

Re United Future – all told, the Electoral Commission stance is quite reasonable. If a party is serious about original registration, then collecting 500 signed membership forms containing certain information and the person’s agreement to be ameber is quite reasonable. Once it is past that hurdle, electronic membership mechanisms are OK. It is equally reasonable that if a party cannot reasonably verify it still has 500 members, then it becomes disqualified. In this case it is obvious that the party has not been vigilent about keeping its affairs in order, and that is a reasonable ‘ask’ when a six-figure of taxpayers’ money hangs on this. It is no answer to claim the party would have escaped notice if its officials had falsely signed the declaration thus committing perjury – even if they thought this, they would realise that ‘Murphy’s Law’ could have caught them out (like with David Garrett’s crook passport application).

And so it the Party’s affairs appeared to not be in reasonable order, it should not have been functioning as a party. The ‘quacks like a duck…’ analogy applies, except that the duck is dead in this case. And the Electoral Commission has ruled that reviving the duck is not an option – UF must produce a new duck.

Mr Speaker was quite reasonable in giving UF a week or so to sort things out (he would have done so with any party in a similar position). However the game is now up and Mr Speaker now has little option but to cut UF Leader’s grant, offices, etc. This means that UF loses all this until the next election, even if UF can be reincarnated.

IMO a party should have at least 4 or so MP’s before it can claim a leader’s allowance, perks or a front row seat for its leader.

Surely it can’t work like that.

Either the party qualified as of the last election and that continues throughout the term, as Graeme Edgeler suggests:

Standing Order 34 now states:

Every political party registered under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993, and in whose interest a member was elected at the preceding general election or at any subsequent by-election, is entitled to be recognised as a party for parliamentary purposes.

Peter Dunne was elected at the preceding general election in the interest of a political party registered under Part 4 of the Electoral Act. That party is no longer registered, but he was so elected, and under that banner. United Future was recognised. Properly. A new general election would change that, but we haven’t had one.

Or funding is lost if the part deregisters and resumes once registered again. Otherwise it would be manifestly unfair.

Better still, legislation and Electoral Commission rules are reviewed and revised so that how this sort of unprecedented situation is dealt with is clear. Currently it’s too open to interpretation.

Actually both are real threats, the issue for both is timescale. The chance of an asteroid, that constitutes an existential threat, hitting Earth in your lifetime is vanishingly small. But I get it: rock hitting other rock, easy to comprehend. But a higher thermal equilibrium from the absorption of infrared radiation in the atmosphere? Voodoo. 🙂

Two more murders by Muslims in the U.K in separate incidents.

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a young woman who was beheaded in a knife attack.

Aras Hussein appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court today accused of murdering Reema Ramzan, 18.

Miss Ramzan, who was from the Darnall area of Sheffield, died on June 4 following an incident at a property on Herries Road, in the city.

Detectives said she suffered a severe knife attack resulting in fatal injuries, including the severing of her head.

Hussein, of Sheffield, is also charged with assaulting five people at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, where he was taken following his arrest by police.

And a Christian man in a wheelchair has his throat slashed. Yeh, really brave to attack someone in a wheelchair.

Yet another sickening murder in London by a Muslim happened over the weekend when a disabled wheelchair bound man had his throat cut.

Daha Mohammed, 51, of Abbotts Close, Thamesmead, was charged with the murder of Mr Colin Greenaway and appeared at Bexley Magistrates’ Court today.

Colin was described as a ‘great neighbour and friend’ by Gary Cook, who resides in the flat above, and said he rushed down after one of his neighbour’s carers knocked on his doors in floods of tears on Saturday.

New Zealand could lose 7000 jobs from a United States-Europe free trade agreement, on which discussions begin next month. This is in the detail of a report on the effect of the agreement on Germany, as reported in Der Spiegel.

What happened to the NZ free trade agreement with the USA? It didn’t get what Fonterra wanted. Why first a free trade agreement with China? It’s great for Fonterra.

A likely US-Europe free trade agreement and it’s flow on effects is another warning about what is happening to New Zealand. Our trade bureaucrats and politicians are locking us into a subservient economic relationship with China, as close a dependence as that we had with Britain in colonial days.

NZ may be on the way to becoming a South Pacific “banana” republic on the lines of the Central American banana republics, such as the Honduras. Milk instead of bananas, Fonterra instead of the United Fruit Company, and Chinese rather than American end consumers, and imported Chinese, Indian, and Filipino workers instead of the American supervisors’ mini-colonies.

Sadly, long ended is the vigorous, entrepreneurial surge that came with Britain’s entry to the EC. This sought for NZ a wide array of foreign markets for a range of NZ exports. The idea of NZ becoming a technologically sophisticated little export country now looks an unrealised 1970s dream.

Weihana, come on, you know this is different. The beheading thing is part of Sharia. Just do a Google search on Islam and ‘beheading’. The children in Saudi Arabia are even taught amputation of limbs in their school books.

Later they practice on dogs and cats (there are many youtube videos of Muslims doing this), so it becomes almost second nature.

Colville – nothing to do with ‘dark ages’. The Commission wants verification (written signatures) of membership to allow the party to ‘kick off’, there is no other plauible mechanism at this early stage since prospective members are unlikely to have electronic validation mechanisms. After that the Commission will accept electronic evidence accompanied presumably by a statutory declaration. This original verification requirement is not a big ‘ask’ – the Mana party did it in a reasonably short timeframe. In the case of the Mana party it was a significant act of good faith which helped to expedite its application.

While the ability of Hone to draw a leader’s allowance was criticised at the time, there was no significant criticism with the way the Commission handled Mana’s application.

Pete – two points re standing orders –
a. how well does this fit with any other relevant enactment? If in conflict with an Act, the Act would prevail.
b. If Standing Orders did prevail, Parliaent can soon enough change them. Labour would presumably support any such change, and so would National, I suspect.

Mr Speaker would have sought advice on this at an early stage, and if advised that Standing Orders prevailed in this case would have ruled that Peter Dunne keeps the UF leader’s allowance – end of matter.

I agree beheading is characteristic of the culture. But I still fail to see how a Muslim man killing his Muslim wife is evidence of a war between Islam and the West. Seems to me more an issue of domestic abuse, something that is a particular problem with Islam but certainly not unique to Islam.

The issue is, if 2 million Muslims were at war with Britain, wouldn’t there be more evidence of this aside from incidents which can easily be characterized as ordinary crime? One would think an army of 2 million could do a little better than that.

iMP, I mentioned this yesterday. It seemed to sit comfortably beside this headline from Mana’s website about the housing in Glen Innes:

“STOP THE ETHNIC CLEANSING.”

Mana’s language shows very clearly their attitudes to Maori, and to “the rest of us” who are expected to fund these schemes.

MANA calls for a halt to the sale of state houses; we want them fixed up; and we want whanau moved into them, immediately

(just whanau? Bugger the white families?)

It was actually the tuberculosis crisis in East Coast communities in 1935 that gave rise to the original Maori Affairs Housing scheme; it’s an absolute bloody disgrace that 80 years later Maori are facing another health crisis, rheumatic fever.

(um, what about the non-Maori affected by draughty housing?)

MANA wants to update and extend the former Maori Affairs Housing Loan Scheme because we want Maori to have the opportunity to own their own homes again.

(so, bugger the white families again?)

Government finance would come through Te Puni Kokiri, effectively cutting out banks and their mean-spirited attitude to Maori homeowners.

(Yeah, it’s the bloody bankers’ fault)

Only Maori first-home buyers would be eligible

But fear not, the rest of us non-Maori are not completely forgotten. John Minto will be announcing MANA’s wider housing policy on 23 July as a part of Mana’s MINTO FOR MAYOR Campaign.

There is opportunity here for all NEw Zealanders to get an education..then to get a good job and eventually to buy a house if that’s what they want.
No one stops Maori- they just don’t have the get up and go to get off their big fat arses. They are too lazy to do the hard work required to get a degree or a trade which takes commitment.
A lot of Maori do not want to work…jobs are there if you want to make the effort to go and find them.
Why should Maori be singled out for housing? There are deserving families who need homes in all races.
Talk about reverse racism.

There is huge outrage here in aust that the ANZ and someother corporate have just announced that they are sending over 2000 jobs off shore – some to NZ.

Call centre jobs here in oz are classified as jobs for the low skilled and unskilled, youth, and secondary jobs for families with kids.

Labor and the Unions are really going for it on this as the election is under 90 days away – and they need a Tampa!

People in oz HATE jobs going offshore. This ain’t a good look for Wellington or NZ.

I believe cases like the one I posted above proves there is a much deeper agenda.

The wintry blast that has crippled parts of the lower South Island is moving north.
Heavy rain and high winds are now causing problems in Christchurch.
Meanwhile, snow and high winds have caused a number of power outages. Electricity to 900 homes has now been restored in Fairlie, but Michael Boorer from Alpine Energy told RadioLIVE about 350 households are still affected.

Meanwhile several alpine passes in the South Island will remain closed overnight and into tomorrow morning.
“There have been some serious snow falls in these areas, while other roads in the region are flooded and experiencing high winds,” the spokeswoman says.

Motorists are being advised to avoid travelling overnight if at all possible.
Snow began falling in Central Otago and Southland yesterday afternoon where flurries reached sea level overnight.

However, forecasters predict the worst will hit later this afternoon.
“We’re not to the peak of this storm yet,” says Daniel Corbett of MetService. “There’s some really nasty elements still to come.”

Thank god for global warming otherwise it would be really cold! 😆

The weird thing is the West Coast has escaped largely unscathed. I was preparing for the worst winds in years and so far nothing too bad at all.

Of course, now the kids are begging me to go up to the snow in the weekend.
