Does anybody want to make an estimate of how many hundreds of millions of dollars taxpayers have spent on Maori language over the years?

I do recall DPF telling us it would be cheaper to giver every Maori TV viewer a new car every two years than continue funding the channel.

Just like child neglect and the high Maori incarceration rates, continuation of the Reo is up to Maori

    Plus, I gotta say, how unfeminist is it of her to bimbify herself all over the show in endless Kardashianesque poses.

      Only 6.5% of the population can read Maori to any great extent even though its Phonetic. Even with this evidence the census next year will be 50% in Maori, signs everywhere are in Maori and every English named geographical feature will sooner or later be renamed into Maori. Even streets in Wellington, sorry Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara, which did not exist before the europeans arrived are being renamed to Maori. The Government and Local Authorities are troughing $$$$$ into this.

        I think we’ve more than done our part as a nation. If Maori really want Te Reo then it is up to them to them to actually make use of it.

        What about “Waitangi” – doesn’t that literally mean water and mourning/crying – why is it called such a name as I thought the water was so sacred to them and yet it mourns, or is it because lives were taken by it during their ocean crossings.         The language is primitive. The, then, elders rejected it as a way forward in the 1930’s. With few actual root words it is hard to extend and English grammar constructions are frequently heard on Maori news. That has happened elsewhere in Polynesia. It is best recognised that its time has past. No amount of transliterated loan words is going to yield other than
        a bastard unfit for purpose in a modern world. As for requiring children to learn it that is a waste of effort and resources. They are going to have to learn and live in in English speaking world. That is part of the nature of time elapsing.
        
        We cannot be obliged to maintain under any arrangements what Maori foresaw as inadequate for their future. We have passed the rural warrior societies of the 1830’s where the language sufficed. Even English races along with the new technical expanding world. It has proven adaptability and flexibility. Polynesian may well morph into a dialect.

      For heavens sake, the right, centre, and left are much more alike than different in this regard. Kiwiblog is littered with name calling (e.g., Kenyans, Messiahs, Angry Little) and insults about people’s physical characteristics (e.g., Arden’s teeth, Turei’s (sp?) weight) or mental capacity, and so on.     Oh it will go under, because just as Sky has found, if you feed customers what you want, rather than what they want, you are doomed. By the time the Herald realises that a large chunk of their subscribers’ beliefs are completely at odds with the leftist propaganda they push, it will be too late.       Did you not read the ComCom report which said the medias group readership number are still very high.
      What they have lost is the pages and pages of classified type ads which have gone online for obvious reasons.
      
      I read a story the other day about The Nelson Mail, it takes 22 people to run it , including printing. They have an emphasis on the local reporting of course so need local reporters , which serves local advertisers too.
      
      So you are entirely wrong about the large print based media groups ‘losing customers’
      
      Even the Oily Orca needs more than a few ads to make money for his backyard operation, hes indroduced a so called subscription- for what ?

    I bet our Auckland Kiwiblog readers can tell us the newspaper’s printing a daily edition in the Maori language.
    
    And that its fellow members of the NZME stable, the radio stations such as Newstalk ZB, have whole days, and otherwise whole hours each day, where they broadcast just in Maori.
    
    I checked the web site of ~~Marble-less Nelly~~ Lizzie Marvelly (Elizabeth Lillian Marvelly). Strangely, I couldn’t find any articles there written in Maori, as opposed to being about Maori. Racist hackers must have obliterated them. Shame!
    
    I wonder if Mz Marvelly and the Hooerald would consider printing her Hooerald column in Maori?
    
    The absence of her work in Maori is despite Mz Marvelly’s statement in a newspaper interview that Howard Morrison was one of her relatives.

    To be fair to Ms Marvelly, the naive language assumptions (there is only one correct pronunciation of any given word and that is the original which can never change) underpinning her judgements are quite popular and often lead to moralising about those who speak ‘incorrectly’, rather than to any acknowledgement that different groups of people speak differently.
    
    One possible difference and perhaps a source of modified pronunciation of Maori words in English sentences, is that English is a stress-timed language but Maori, to my ear is syllable-timed, and the two timings often don’t mix well.

      After reading Kiwi Dave’s post I was able to learn what stress-timed languages are from the short video on Youtube linked to below.
      
      After this, Wikipedia provided a more detailed explanation of stress-timed languages which seem to include Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian, as well as English and its cousins such as German, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages.

        Thats absurd, all dog breeds are genetically similar. There is no evidence of two breeds of dog in NZ, anyway dogs would have arrived with the ships of europeans so someone has confused the Maori Kura with later european breeds.

      The Papamoa flat land is covered in ash from the Rotoiti eruption that took place in the 1400’s.
      Recently during a subdivision construction there was uncovered two grave sites.
      The process is first to trench along the top soil in two directions looking for any subsoil disturbance. If there is none then the scrappers are allowed in to scrape off the top soil once again looking for any soil disturbance which would indicate hangi pits. graves etc.
      In this case therewas notyhing of note so the scrapers were allowed to continue. The removed the Rotiti Ash as its not allowed to be built on and then began on the next layer. To their surprise they uncovered two grave sites. The skeletons were buried in an upright posture but in a fetal position.
      To be there they had to have been buried prior to the 1400 eruption from Rotoiti i.e about 100 years before Maori came to NZ.
      The skeletons were exhumed and removed by the local Iwi and are re-interned at a site on the side of their urapa. The person in charge says “we don’t know if they are ours or not but we treat them as they were.”
      
      There is no attempt to date them which would be a good thing to do especially as its clear they were buried before Maori arrived in the BOP.
      
      True story as my son was the person in charge of the subdivision when this happened in the last year.

I wonder how long it is going to take before the shit really hits the fan in Australian Rugby. You look at whats happen to Australian Cricket over the years when their game wasn’t at its best the knife came out and the new progressed the game so you would think that Rugby in Australia would teetering on revolt and festering for change.

  A couple of points. Cricket is the number one summer sport over there, whereas rugby is way down the pecking order.
  The other thing is that I think they changed their selection policy so that foreign domiciled players are now considered for the Wallabies. Same in South Africa. NZ doesn’t need to do that and hasn’t. The results in the super competition and at international level are now heavily weighted in our favour & deleting a few sides won’t change much.

    The European clubs have gutted Australian and South African rugby and given the opportunity would do the same to us were it not for the very astute sponsorship deals put in place by NZ Rugby. Those sponsorships with the oft maligned AIG, Adidas, Sky and others have saved our national game from going down the same path as Australia and South Africa. RIP Wallabies and ‘boks – it was great while it lasted.

  It is hard to believe that the Aussies are as bad as the results indicate. There is certainly a complete loss of confidence and errors are creeping in all the time.
  There has been some talk of the Aussieslaying in the NPC to improve their game. I sincerely hope that NZRFU refuses to have a bar of it. At the very least, they should adopt the Malcolm Turnbull approach and make them pay for 100% of the costs. No one will pay to watch them.

    Let’s not be too smug. Not a lot of people are paying to watch our teams in the NPC.
    I went to watch Auckland play Wellington at Eden Park a couple of seasons ago. There was nobody in the southern stand.
    Even on Friday the Hurricanes played in front of only 16,000 at the cake tin. That’s with the most entertaining player in world rugby at a level he’ll never surpass.

Rats could only get here with Man as rats are not native to NZ.

The general consensus is that Polynesians made several efforts to colonise New Zealand over a long period of time, but each successive attempt failed and the settlers perished, until the Great Migration.

Polynesians certainly ‘got about’. Kumara, a native plant to the Americas, was found in the highlands of PNG where tribes had had no contact with Europeans. Ergo Polynesians had brought it backwards across the Pacific against the prevailing winds. They knew what they were up to on the sea.

    Of course, there doesn’t appeat to be any solid evidence of anyone living here pre-Maori, i.e. about 1250AD – but I understand that NZ scientists have the largely flightless pukeko arrival dated around 1,000AD, from memory.

      Not known for sure, but Pukeko have been found to have flown as far as the Kermadecs, so flying/being blown from Australia is not impossible.

        Most old sailing ships could do around 100-150km per day (some faster). Could canoes sustain 400-odd km per day on a 3000km or so trip?

        ztev: You are confusing efficiency with effectiveness.
        
        Sails were far more efficient in that you needed to expend less energy to get the same amount of goods the same amount of distance. Cook’s ship had less than 100 people on it of which 80 or so were working the boat. The ship was about 360 tons meaning each person was shifting 4.5 tons or so.
        
        Can’t do that by paddling.

    Extinctions occur without new or introduced predators.
    The predation rates and extinctions -since- the official Maori (and Rattus exulans) arrival
    date are well recorded and bring to mind
    that, had Rattus exulans been present 800-1200 years previously,

  TV sports and particularly rugby viewership is falling rapidly. People are far less interested in sports than in previous eras due to greater range of activities available through internet. Stadium sports also have falling school participation rates (even as population increases). We don’t need huge expensive new Mausoleums (stadiums) to a passing age.

    Even Duco couldnt fill Vector Arena with a ‘World Title Fight’, which has me thinking about how quickly they were able to transfer to the 2000 seat place at Wiri…. lucky for them Fury wasnt feeling the best, otherwise they would have lost big time…. very lucky…

    Correct for code specific stadiums but this wouldn’t be the case.
    
    The stadium would cater for union, football and league so you could have multiple events per week. It also would get bigger walk up crowds from growing CBD population for after work games. Easier to access from a transport perspective. Would form an entertainment precinct.
    
    And most importantly would be used to host concerts which you can’t tell me is a falling market after 120,000 people went to see Adele in a shit stadium in a shit location

        There are plans afoot to convert Aucklands speedway track at Western Springs into a purpose built cricket stadium at a cost of $70 mil.
        Presently Eden Park #2 ground is home to Auckland cricket but is severly limited with a small pitch.
        Auckland ratepayers are naturally anxious with all the talk about about a waterfront stadium.Who is going to pay for that when Aucklands infrastructure is groaning at the seams.

  That’s because the girls will be regarded as “damaged goods” after being raped and used as sex slaves.

      Polynesians were undoubtedly great voyagers and sailors, but there’s a lot to be explained about their navigation. Look at the article on canoe migration on the Encyclopedia of NZ.
      
      Tradition has it canoes followed whales to NZ. Then there are the mays.
      
      Bird migration may have alerted Polynesians to the existence of the islands that would become New Zealand. Zenith stars may have alerted canoeists to the presence of islands. Clouds may have alerted the canoeists to atolls. Drift wood may have alerted them land was near by. Seasonal sea swells may have been used for direction.     Here’s a wee hint. When there are boom times, don’t count on them continuing. Keep your same modest house and pay off your mortgage faster. That way you’re in a far better place when the boom ends.
    
    And I don’t really think they are worried about future generations. It’s just a way of saying they are worried about themselves and trying to sound virtuous.

  I was pretty antagonistic towards the church, but then took a much more relaxed attitude. If people want to part take in a delusion and they are not hurting anyone, well let them.
  
  What did make me grind my teeth though were the priests and ministers telling us to give thanks to god for sparing us during the Christchurch earthquakes.
  
  To me that’s pretty warped. If god is all powerful then he either caused or let the earthquake happen – causing untold misery, deaths and destruction. Then we are supposed to say thanks.

  If God is supposed to alleviate all suffering, at what point should He step in? When a child is just about to trip? To burn his hand on a stove? To prick himself on a splinter? If a person is about to hit another person, should God then take away the free will of the hitter? Should he be stepping in a thousand times a day like a parent controlling a small child? But for every single person?
  
  I think a lot of human suffering comes down to the free will we have been given. If God is like a parent, and we are like children, you could follow your child around all day and make sure that they do not slip, or burn themselves on a stove, or hit another child, or make sure no other child does anything bad to them. At some point you are infringing on their free will or the will of others they come into contact with.
  
  We can do this with our kids – pick them up and put them out of harms way, or stop them eating something. But not with adults, because to do so is to infringe on a person’s free will. What if you were about to hit someone and God stepped in and stopped you because it would cause the other person suffering? I’m sure most of us would be very upset to have our free will taken away; even if it is the right to do something considered immoral.
  
  Also, we do not see the long term effects of what good some suffering may accomplish. We let our own children suffer sometimes for their own good – eg, letting them have immunization shots which may hurt at the time but are ultimately good for them and may protect them against a greater suffering or disease in the future. We do not know why suffering occurs or why God lets it happen, but that does not make God bad. Perhaps some suffering on this Earth gives a person a new perspective, or turns them toward God – it may even help to save their immortal soul.

He does however fall into the trap of on one hand dismissing a god exists, but on the other hand talks of ‘evil’. I know ‘evil’ is Greek in origin and not derived from devil, but evil has religious connotations. More suitable synonyms perhaps:

During the first round of the French elections all overseas domiciled French voters ( apparently strong supporters of Macron , in general) got 2 voting papers each, sent out “by mistake”. It was reported the French Govt. would look into it after the election ( not sure if that was meant to be after phase one or two).
Now we have the same “mistake” occurring for the second phase, except this time Le Pen’s papers are also sometimes ripped , making it an ineligible voting paper. Some people in the establishment are obviously very desperate.

TV Three were not happy just doing the story on the drug takers in Canberra they had to have a shot at Russell Packer for a offence that happened three odd years ago that he was sentenced to a jail term and could not also play league, can anyone please tell me why the Media and their Journalists want to involve someone in a story after he has done his time and lost thousands of dollars for being banned from playing and was not involved in any police and NRL investigation.

Our schools, hospitals and social welfare are utterly overburdened. Our homelessness is as bad as it has ever been and rapidly deteriorating. Our housing list is not being relieved at an effective rate and social cohesion is in the toilet, yet nobody is speaking about the elephant in the room.

Our native population is now down to 82% and that’s at a conservative estimate, when you add in how many vibrants don’t fill in census data and the government’s own projection as to how many illegals we have we could be another 10% down. Considering that just the African community has an unemployment rate of 40% and up, as unemployed it follows they are being assisted by the state, what evidence have we the other groups differ?

How much do we pay out annually in child benefit for non-Irish spawn? How many hospital beds taken up by leprous third-world invasive?

Our schools are teaming with their proceed in a country carrying 40% of EU debt and yet the limp-wristed must march against racism? They exhort the government to deal with homelessness while delightedly cheering on the invaders who have been given those resources instead?

When you stand back and objectively look at it, you can only conclude our system us a mental asylum.
