    Labours classic art schemes. Our local artists residency. Council funds the art residents who get residency and undisclosed stipend from their capital fund . The artists then give art back to the trust which the trust accounts say are recorded as inventory of nil value. The artists are some of NZ’s top senior artists and they onsell the art for between $1k to $3k and gift it to benefactors. Because it’s inventory not assets theres no public record. They haven’t filed accounts since 2015 and there notes say their last accounts said they are considering the impact of the new more stringent accountability requirements for charities. And have not filed since. Complaints go nowhere. But the net effect is converting public money into a different asset that is high value but can be recorded as no value and not traceable.

Does Antifa exist in New Zealand – Antifa, the anti-fascist group whose members where masks and carry baseball bats and Mace (the spray)? This group of Leftists who are now active in America allegedly descend from the groups of communists who fought Nazis in street battles in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s.

Cast your mind back to 2004, when there was a march or demonstration in Wellington by about 45 members of the National Front, the extreme right group led by the New Zealand Kyle Chapman (his namesake in America seems now to be more notorious).

There was a counter-appearance by 800 people in a demonstration by a group called Multicultural Aotearoa. No problem from them. However, Inspector Paul Berry, of the police told the Press Association that about 200 members of a “radical, anarchist, punk-rocker type group” also converged on the cenotaph.

There were two arrests of National Front members or supporters.

However, Inspector Berry said:

“The radical group who confronted the National Front down at the Cenotaph really did cause most of the trouble.

“They had set out to confront the National Front people and make it their business to scare them out of town… we had a couple of bottles thrown from the crowd at either the National Front or into the police lines.

“We had a protester with a patu — a Maori club, a wooden one — hit a National Front member in the head.”

As pointed out previously, there are now two Kyle Chapmans active on the Far Right. The part-Maori Kyle Chapman who leads the tiny National Front in NZ, and a Kyle Chapman who has popped up amid extreme Right activists in the United States.

Interesting point by Stephen Joyce, houses are in short supply because no-one is moving to Aussie, if Labour come to power and people start leaving again for Oz at 20,000 per year, can they legitimately claim to have solved the housing supply problem?

        Regardless of the Reserve Bank, the trading banks and other big lenders will make up their own minds on how much is safe to lend. In a falling market that may mean they will lend lower proportions of buying price.

      Where to start:
      Capt MW isn’t the cause of the housing issue. Retarded Labour Lite RMA policy by National is the primary cause – thanks a lot Simon Upton (and no thanks to a bunch of outgoing National wets for supporting it back in 1990/1). The same twat who is soon to be Commissioner for the Environment – fucking unbelievable yes! It enshrined NIMBYism into a pillar of law rather than the social ill it really is.
      Secondly, another failure of successive governments is at play here. Lack of real incentivisation for true retirement savings investment instruments – other countries use tax-free incentives. In NZ the only rational option is to property speculate to seek a haven from socialist levels of taxation of retirement savings.
      I could go on – but why bother when you are clearly rabid on the issue. You made bad choices about your savings strategy – boo hoo! Hardly a good reason to go all antifa on Dad’s Army.

Labour leader Jacinda Ardern kicks off her campaign with an official launch in Auckland on Sunday buoyed by a new poll that puts her party within striking distance of a softening National vote.

The survey obtained by Stuff and undertaken by pollsters UMR Research – which Labour, NZ First and a range of corporates use – put Labour at 37 per cent, up one percentage point since the last UMR poll a week ago.

That was the same support shown in this week’s One News-Colmar Brunton poll.

But National was on only 40 per cent, down three from the previous UMR poll a week before. The One News poll also showed National down three percentage points but at 44 per cent.

There was better news for the Greens who were steady at 8 per cent in the UMR poll. That contrasted with the disastrous showing in the Colmar-Brunton survey released on Thursday that put them at 4.3 per cent – below the MMP threshold and in danger of crashing out of Parliament. … read more via hyperlink above …

      Well Hugh you would have to agree that the previous scenario of 30 – 40 thousand Kiwi’s leaving NZ for jobs wasn’t in any way sustainable unless you also went.
      Ain’t it great that for the first time since about 1973 we have a positive population growth fueled by Kiwi’s returning home.
      Most of my life time working has been characterized by economic doom with rampant inflation, economic restructuring and the consequence of, a shrinking economy which still doesn’t export as much per capita as it did prior to 1973 and has less productivity per capita than 1973.
      
      Ain’t it great that we are short of houses so those arsewipes that beat up on Landlords for so many years or who became entitled to taxpayer housing are finally getting their turn at the grind.
      They should be made to live in tents as I did when I couldn’t afford a house or in batches in working mens camps like many soldiers who returned from the war or immigrants that came here after the war. If you don’t know what I’m talking about google it up.
      Fuck I get sick of the entitled and the stupid telling us how we should give them cheap houses.
      The only ones we should help are those that are unable to help themselves, not those that won’t.
      
      Anyway the Govt. has been buying up all the old motels. Why, well most are built in concrete block so the arsewipes can bang their stupid entitled heads on the walls with out breaking the walls.
      
      Had we continued as we were 10 years ago NZ would be another 400,000 Kiwi’s less as we trooped of from the Clarks and the haters of Labour.
      ITS THE HUGE CHANGE IN KIWI’S COMING BACK TO ROOST THAT IS CAUSING THE HOUSING PROBLEM.

It seems Labour the Party that criticize National about hiding donations from wealthy investors through a trust has now been caught out lying although legal with painting that artist do and give to Labour.It is alleged that the donor gives Labour a sum of money and they then name him as a donor of one of the paintings thus not having to reveal the size of the Donation given. Maybe this is how they were able to get around the $200,000 given for slave gate.

  Love or hate Winston, he is the best reader of the mood of the people in NZ politics. Since he’s locked out of the traditional two main parties – his strategy is always to seek to be the King-maker by controlling the balance of power.
  
  Incidentally, this should be the natural niche for a Green party, but our watermelon variety spurned what has worked so well for European Greens in favour of marxism.
  
  Back to the point – and Winston is merely leveraging the Trump message (you know the one that resonated so powerfully as to put a no hoper into the WH with all the forces of Leftist evil deployed against him). There are many, many natural National supporters who HAVE had enough of Labour Lite policies from the lost in the woods National. There are many Labour supporters who have had enough of having union morons foisted upon them as the leader of Labour.
  
  Even more accurately, we keep on having our government decided upon not by the majority but by the most trivial of minorities. Last time National couldn’t govern until they bowed to the demands of the:
  – racist Maori party
  – the socialist United party, and
  – the pointless Seymour party
  
  representing a total of what 4% of the population – hardly representative.
  
  I’ve had enough of MMP and to be honest I for the life of me can’t understand why we voted to keep the form of electoral representation that has made Bolivia and Lesotho such world powerhouses.

Erm, yes. We need to pay tax. But if someone is getting back in benefit a lot more than they put in, they aren’t “paying” tax.

Also, the state may take too much from one group, when they shouldn’t, and give it to another group who doesn’t deserve it. This ruins economies and hurts the very people it claims to help.

Perhaps we could ask these comedians why some people feel politicians know better than they do?

    It’s not paying tax that is the problem. It is how much, by whom, and what it is being wasted on. Taxation also creates fiscal drag, the equivalent of killing the golden goose, so it is right that politicians limit tax and people hold them to it.

To all those angry middle aged men considering voting for Winston, do you still intend to after his minimum wage policy, and his much-worse GST off “basic food items” policy?

In case you were unaware, that policy requires asking grandmothers what “basic food items” are. If you don’t believe me, read Winston’s speech from yesterday. And not only is it led by grandmothers, it costs $700million.

Does anyone think food retailers won’t put prices up 15% to fill their own pockets if GST is taken off?

So I go back to my original question: Do you still intend to vote for Winston?

  That is one, basic pricing model.
  
  If they learned a little more about pricing models, they’d soon realise that their policy will result in higher profits for supermarkets, not lower prices for consumers.

  The only people who would really gain out of this would be:
  
  1) Accounting software companies: Mixed GST would need software that can charge GST on some items and not on others and can show the customer which items had GST charged and tell the company how much GST they have to pay to IRD. That’s going to cost retail businesses millions.
  
  2) Lawyers fighting over classification of foods: Is this “basic” or “luxury”. These are ongoing battles in the UK (eg. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_Cakes#Categorisation_as_cake_or_biscuit_for_VAT).
  
  Pies sold cold are classified at less VAT than the same pies sold hot. So what happens if they sell the pies cold, but there’s a microwave where customers can warm the pies themselves? It’s a legal nightmare that costs a lot to implement.

  As we saw in the US – when the political options are totally unrepresentative of the needs of the people (because they’re so corrupt and lost in giddy rounds of wasteful virtue-signalling) there comes a point where you do not want to vote for the least awful option, and you want to vote to bring the house down in the hope that out of the ashes rises a more honest and representative solution.
  
  Currently the most moderate path to deflect National from their Labour Lite path is to foist Winston’s vengance on them. If that doesn’t wake National the fuck up then the country will descend into a form of chaos after 2020 when a Labour led government will be inevitable.
  
  National’s current policy pathway takes us down the gurgler slowly.
  Labour governance will take us down the same gurgler a little more quickly.
  Only a course correction, back to the centre right will save us from replicating the same mess that Europe is careering towards.
  
  I certainly will be weighing up options to find a way to give National the strongest negative message – and two ticks blue will just lock them on their current course. There is risk in giving Winston his head – indubitably. But there is no other way to show dissent – given Act have totally lost their way.
  
  I’d prefer a chance at redemption over guaranteed disaster. Introduce a little chaos. It seems to be doing good things for the US economy right now!

  Winston needs to have a talk with Peter Dunne or Judith Collins about tax administration. The costs of exempting any item from GST would be horrendous.
  The legal costs about the scope and qualification of any exemption would not be small either.
  
  National have already covered this by simply increasing the benefit.

Anarchists are perhaps the most hopeless of the Utopians. Took about organising a piss-up in a brewery. Anarchists would still be arguing about the agenda for a discussion on the party when the beer had gone stale.

I wonder if there’s a smattering of truth in a story about one of the anarchist units in the Spanish Civil War (Orwell served in an anarchist unit and was wounded in the throat).

The story, perhaps apocrphyhal, is that higher command assigned an anarchist unit a section of the front in which to take part in a broad attack along with the communist and other socialist Republican units.

The anarchists, receiving the order, held a meeting to discuss it and eventually voted to attack a different section. They suffered heavy losses and failed in their section of the assault.

  I don’t think the narrative that “they set out to provoke the neo-Nazis” is one worth pursuing. Not for those of us who value the rule of law, and the respecting and protecting of the rights of others in the public space. They are both odious pressure groups, and the best thing to do is deprive them of oxygen, sympathy and excuses – while addressing the legitimate grievances of injustice, and acknowledging that the right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of freedom.
  
  And illegally pulling down statues, or targeting a group of people on the basis of their religion is not how America is meant to run. But a woman died, and whatever you might think of her possible politics, or the driver of the car, there is no excuse or justification for that.

    However, I don’t see the need for street protests and demonstrations by anyone in the internet age, when it’s so easy to get your views out to all.

This latest fraud by Labour appears way more serious than that of Metiria Turei.

They look to have breached the Electoral Finance Act and opened up civil action by the struggling artists.

There should be an immediate freeze put on all the parties assets and accounts while this is properly investigated.

The artists had no idea the party was naming them as the donors – they never saw a cent of the money. They say their works are auctioned off at well above market value to wealthy benefactors who want to keep their support for the party secret.

But the financial half of the art laundering, the converting that art into dosh isn’t recorded. We know about bill’s accomodation supplement. It’s been made transparent. But the public deserve transparency aroudn the dodgy art deals. And Labour’s usual money man is on the art trust that hasn’t filed accounts for years.

        The gift occurred at the point of delivery to the Labour party or its agent unless some other intention was evident.
        
        The value of the gift was the properly assessed market value at that time.
        
        Labour then sold the artwork through an agent to a buyer at a special (non market) price and atrributed that as a “gift” from the artist.
        
        The buyer and the artist were at arms length and so the attributed gift could not have been made by the buyer.
        Fraud.
        
        I have been a qualified professional IRD valuer for the former Gift Duties.

  The interesting bit that has come out lately is the speculation about a regency. It has been clear from many years that the Queens will not abdicate; as she would regard that as a violation of her coronation oath. Installing her son as Regent would avoid that, allowing Betty Windsor to retire in fact, if not in name.
  I also have to laugh at opinion polls that show a majority of Brits would prefer Prince William to be their next King. Seems to miss the point of a hereditary monarchy – the hoi polloi don’t get to choose. Might as well poll them on the desirability of the tide coming in…

Actually, as there was a lot of press self-censorship, M J Savage’s reaction on being informed of the crisis was, “who is Wallis Simpson?” 😉

I’m against hate propaganda laws because media effects research usually indicates that media coverage is only one of a number of influences behind alleged behavioural ‘consequences’. I’m also anti-censorship when it comes to adult-oriented porn. It is a matter of debate within New Zealand’s LGBT communities, though.

Why bother, given the near-universal condemnation of that tosser Robertson from most sources of New Zealand public opinion? I’m perfectly okay with him getting sent to Coventry over that unpleasant little outburst. However, note also that there are such things as defamation and copyright laws that can be drawn on if he goes too far in this context.

  Like Sir DJ, I had a brief dealing with Pinetree a few years ago – very generous with his time, thoughts and wonderful under-stated self-deprecating earthy Kiwi sense of humour. Was of that generation who joyfully, willingly and tirelessly gave back to rugby (and his community, especially the IHC) because it had given so much to him.

Having watched both The Nation and Q&A, I’m a bit speechless as what is being produced for voters. They’re both fairly relentlessly Left. I like both Lisa Owen and Corin Dann – but Q&A were streets ahead in even making an attempt at balanced comment on discussions.

I could go on but won’t. I will say that the clip on housing on Q&A (I think) ensured beyond the smallest doubt that I would not return to voting for the Left – as a traditional ‘socialist’ and/or ‘light blue’.

Two situations were included to describe the problem with unaffordable housing.

The first was a couple of academics who choose to work in tertiary education as part-time teachers/lecturers, as a lifestyle, in order to pursue ‘community work’ – and openly profess to not believe in ‘home ownership’ as a principle – and derided TV programs on the same for encouraging it. Nevertheless, they’re clearly not ‘struggling’ and/or could readily help themselves if they wanted to.

The second was a professional academic gay man, married to another gay professional, who have more disposable income than many and (call me old-fashioned) no ordinary expectation of having children.

Neither of those examples are the ‘norm’. I want to see examples of a couple working in rubbish collection, cleaning, admin, or trades etc. who are working to start having, or provide for existing, families and want a home to house them.

This is not just a matter of principle. Are the latter so scarce that there are none available as examples? Or are they just not important anymore – because they’re the majority?

Society is not okay if committed socialist part-time teachers and married gays are thriving although I’m happy if they do. Society is okay if the majority of ordinary people with families can thrive – in which case, so will the others. The Left just do not have their feet on the ground and care nothing for ordinary working people who are not even on their radar.

This is why they’re happy to introduce multiple new taxes and preach wage equality. Their policies are not targeted to ordinary working people.

The divide has radically changed. There is no National made up of business owners and profit makers and a Labour comprised of workers struggling to make a decent living and maintain a basic quality of life for themselves and children.

National now comprises working people – from the bottom up who want hope for a future. Labour comprises the intellectual left and professional women/minorities who already have enough, have options/choices, and want more so that they can be the new ‘rich pricks’ – if voluntarily ‘suffering’ or claiming to be virtue-signalling ‘models’ mouthing socialist platitudes.

The Opportunities Party (Top) leader Gareth Morgan used the 11th commemoration of King Tuheitia’s coronation on Sunday to pledge his political bottom line.

While politicians of many stripes were welcomed to the seat of the Kingitanga at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia, on Sunday morning, Morgan used his speech to announce his party’s non-negotiable stance: unequivocal protection of the Maori electoral seats.

On Thursday the High Court of Australia gave judgment in the matter of Knight v State of Victoria. I’ve previously commented on this case here.

Here’s a brief summary:

1. Julian Knight has been in jail since 1987. His non-parole period ended in 2014.

2. In 2014, one month before the non-parole period ended, the Victorian Government passed this law. The Minister said:

Julian Knight committed one of the most heinous crimes in the history of Victoria. Victorians can rightly expect that the government will do whatever we can to ensure Julian Knight is never released until he can do no harm, and with this bill, this government is delivering on that commitment. … The effect of these provisions are [sic] that Julian Knight will die in jail, or will be in such a condition on release that he will be a threat to no-one.

3. The Victorian Government did everything it could to make the law unchallengable. The law expressly excludes human rights legislation: “[S]ection 31(7) of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 does not apply to this section”.

4. Knight doesn’t want to stay in jail for the rest of his life, so he challenged the law. He asked the High Court to tell the Victorian Government that the law is invalid under the Australian Constitution. The High Court said (in polite judicial language) nice try. So, Knight will stay in jail until he rots.

In New Zealand, our three-strikes legislation is designed to ensure that the worst offenders stay behind bars for a long time, but they’re eventually released back into the community. In recent years I’ve read about some evil people who should never be released. Here’s an overseas example: “He is a 53-year-old Australian accused of the torture and murder of children for his own sexual gratification. His alleged crimes are so bad that authorities are considering reintroducing the death penalty to execute him”.

So what’s the answer – lock the worst criminals up for longer (under our three-strikes legislation) at considerable taxpayer cost and hope they can be safely released into the community (rehabilitated or otherwise) many years later? Or, despite the legal hurdles, should we try what they’ve successfully done in Victoria anyway?

Scientists think super volcanoes, and Taupo is one of the biggest, may hold part of the answer to future world supplies of lithium, used in batteries that will be increasingly power electric cars and store energy for solar-powered homes.

Scientists have studied lithium-enriched magmas that formed by super volcanoes. Over thousands of years, lithium leaks out of the volcanic deposits, accumulating in the caldera lake, eventually becoming concentrated in a clay.

The scientists have shown super volcanoes have the potential to host huge amounts of this lithium-rich clay.

The findings, published in the magazine New Scientist, were gathered by comparing changes to 27 Pacific islands over the last 20 to 60 years using historical aerial photos and satellite images.

Auckland University’s Associate Professor Paul Kench, a member of the team of scientists, says the results challenge the view that Pacific islands are sinking due to rising sea levels associated with climate change.

“Eighty per cent of the islands we’ve looked at have either remained about the same or, in fact, gotten larger,” he said.

“Some of those islands have gotten dramatically larger, by 20 or 30 per cent.

        Ironically, Watts has done more to strengthen the scientific evidence for AGW than refute it. A libertarian think tank, the Heartland Institute, published his “academic” work based on the Surface Stations data claiming that NOAA’s weather stations did not meet regulatory code and had collected unreliable data that exaggerated maximum temperatures. Watts’ data (collected by volunteers) consists only of pictures and information about the locations and surroundings of weather stations. Watts then assumed that poorly-located stations had to overstate the global warming trend, without bothering to do any of that annoying and tedious stuff like statistical analysis. A study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres did analyze the data, and found that the stations Watts flagged as unreliable were indeed unreliable. They had actually underestimated the maximum temperatures. Good catch, Anthony! The authors further pointed out that “photos and site surveys do not preclude the need for data analysis.” (Zing!)
        
        In 2011 Watts claimed to have new “research” that would prove the unreliability of the weather stations and shake the very foundations of AGW theory. In fact, when the paper was finally released, it came to essentially the same conclusion as the aforementioned JGR study: minimum temperatures at a number of stations were biased slightly upward and maximum temperatures biased slightly downward, thus canceling out the bias when averaged.

        On Goddards blog you get moderated out if you point out surface mass balance of Greenland is a snow that falls less snow that melts .
        The measurement of the ice sheet mass is how much ice there is.
        The problem being with climate change it is melting at the edges quicker than it builds up.
        
        For an ice sheet that neither grows or shrinks, there is at all points averaged over the year a balance between
        
        the amount of snow that falls and is compressed to ice
        the amount of snow and ice that melts or evaporates (sublimates) and
        the amount of ice that flows away due to the ice motion
        
        The two first contributions make up the surface mass balance. For the ice sheet as a whole, there is a balance between the surface mass balance and the amount of ice that calves into the ocean as icebergs.
        
        If climate changes, the surface mass balance may change such that it no longer matches the calving and the ice sheet can start to gain or lose mass. This is important to keep track of, since such a mass loss will lead to global sea level rise. As mentioned, satellites measuring the ice sheet mass have observed a loss of around 200 Gt/year over the last decade.

        The entire Idea behind Watts blog was the record is unreliable because of bad station siteing and UHI .

        When the sea level rises, wind erosion decreases. The coral itself continues to grow upwards to match the sea level rise. Because the coral continues to flourish, the flow of sand and rubble onto the atoll continues, and with reduced wind erosion the atoll height increases by the amount of the sea level rise.
        
        The reefs are dying .
        When the reef goes sea level rise will be a moot point.

He said something else (not sure what) that got DPF’s attention: “[Deleted by DPF as highly defamatory and nasty and that is strike 3 so a week off]”. Cricko hasn’t been back since. Here’s a first-hand report from someone who comments at The Standard:

I witnessed something extraordinary today : Labour had 2800 people at its campaign launch. This is a record-breaking event the Party’s history !
In the past, we think we’ve done well to get 600 to a campaign launch.

Penny (who never misses a profiling opportunity) was there to fundraise for her next overseas trip:

Disclosure: My Party vote is not yet committed – I was invited and am here to listen, (and leaflet, after this event against the privatisation of State housing, in support of directly-affected tenant, Niki Rauti).

It’s strange that Penny’s party vote is “not yet committed”. I’ve noticed a lot of blue in her signage, so perhaps there’s more than a 0.0001% chance that she’ll vote for National.

  This could be critical for the whole election. Penny is capable of getting 3-400 votes in whichever electorate she is campaigning. Naturally, all those lost souls will cast their party votes as Penny directs. Multiply that nationwide and she could bring a solid 0.1% of the vote to the table.

    Sadly, Mikenmild, Penny’s influence may have waned somewhat. She’s achieved mixed results in 2 general elections and 2 by-elections:
    
    1. March 2011 – Botany by-election – 128 votes
    2. November 2011 – 2011 general election (Epsom) – 124 votes
    3. September 2014 – 2014 general election (Helensville) – 420 votes
    4. February 2017 – Mt Albert by-election – 139 votes
    5. September 2017 – 2014 general election (Tamaki) – [to be determined]
    
    Trying the same thing over and over and getting the same result must be frustrating. But she was invited to attend a very important conference in The Hague, because she completed a multiple choice questionnaire on rule of law and corruption, so maybe things will be different this year? Note I said “different” – not “better” – her 420 votes in the 2014 general election may turn out to be the high watermark in her political career!

      You omitted her strong showing in last year’s mayoral election – 7,022 votes (1.77%) for a solid sixth place.
      Think about that – 7,000 people were so concerned about Auckland that they thought Penny Bright would be the answer. And those are just the tip of the iceberg – many more would have voted for her but were unable to locate a polling booth or fill out the ballot form.

        Politics is a tough business, Mikenmild. Labour has selected Sam McDonald as its Tamaki candidate, so there’s no room for Penny. Sam seems to have good credentials:

        He works with young people in a community ambassador role, speaking to high school students about the benefits of tertiary study, building on his long involvement in youth initiatives.
        …
        Sam, 27, attended St Peter’s College where he was Deputy Head Boy, and the University of Auckland where he completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in History and Politics, an LLB and a Diploma in Secondary Teaching.
        
        I know Sam’s experience as “Deputy Head Boy” at a private school will get Nasska’s attention, but this guy’s product offering seems slightly more diverse than Penny’s one-trick portfolio.

        By the way, National’s candidate (Simon O’Connor) is an interesting guy:
        
        Simon was educated at the University of Auckland, and also trained to become a Catholic priest. Though he completed his training, he did not seek ordination. Instead, he sought wider involvement in the community to make a practical, hands-on difference.
