      This is so English to discuss the weather! The next topic will be what roads we used to get here as the the A16 is blocked at Tuakau before moving on when sitting down to house prices and school fees!
      
      There are days that I almost miss she who must not be mentioned or z to make some stupid comment to get the ball rolling!
      
      Mike is lurking somewhere, he will say something that may be construed to be against the grain, because that is what he does, but he can always be relied on to make things move rain or no rain!

  The man-made global warming Chicken Little fraudsters carried out such ‘settled’ science in all regards – they forgot that there is this thing in our solar system called “THE SUN” which inconveniently truthfully has things called “SUNSPOTS” which have activity cycles which have massive impacts on the climate.
  
  Seriously, inconveniently it appears we’re heading towards a sunspot minima phase not unlike that which can be clearly seen (even in the tampered) temperature records to correlate to temperature minimums. Still we have to be gentle with the climate cultists, it’s an entirely understandable oversight – it’s not like everyone on the planet can see the sun in the sky, all day, every day. It’s easily overlooked.
  
  It’s such a relief the climate fraudsters showed the foresight to change the name of their cult from “Global Warming” to “Climate Change” so that they can now attribute the upcoming cooling of the world to their cult too.
  
  Apparently, the poor showing by the Green party at the election has also been attributed to Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Alarmism Accord.

    If scientists do learn that carbon dioxide is not responsible for “climate change,” will we get our money back?
    
    I mean, in the text of all these international climate change accords, there must surely be a small clause to the effect that “if it is learned that the CO2 is not responsible, all monies paid shall be refunded”. This is standard to most contracts, I would have thought.

        None of us is able to predict, with confidence let alone certainty, the ultimate outcome of the great 21st Century “climate change / global warming” debate. And nobody should be dismissed as being “antiscience” for retaining an open mind about conflicting scientific theory, observations or evidence.
        
        Any ‘ultimate outcome’ that is currently being debated is unlikely to become clear, unequivocally, within the lifetimes of most of us. In the meantime, Griff’s total faith, his insults and his name-calling won’t have any effect on conclusions that, over time, will be reached and verified by science alone.

      Once again the use of vertically reduced scale graphs to try and show how bad/good something is is at best deceiptful.

      Yet if you look at;

      You will see in the first line “The solar output is very nearly constant, as shown in the plot below. The range of variation is about 0.2%, so reproducible that it is often referred to as the “solar constant”. ”
      Examine their graph of solar output since 1975 and there is no indication of rise or fall.
      
      Herein lies the problem if the “Science is Settled” those two graphs should be the same. Forgetting trends altogether your graph show irradience at 1360-1361W m-2 and mine shows 1366W m-2 they should both be the same surely this measuring a known physical constant.
      
      If my graph is right, not saying it is, then your graph is not which brings into question the rest of the readings.
      
      In those two graphs alone is the nub of the climate change debate, acceptors and sceptics. Nothing, so it seems, is settled.

      My view is backed up by credibility and prestige. The six nations is a competition that the rugby world (as small as it is) takes very seriously, the rugby championship is something that has no history, prestige or respect.
      Nobody cares who wins the rugby championship, not even the huge crowd watching the NZ team today, in a nation of 42.1 million people they have to squeeze the Argie national team into a stadium that only holds 30,000 people.
      Face it guys, the NZ team are not world famous crowd pullers.

Latest word do the rounds for many of NZs voter.The word is “Cruelled”.Thats what the feeling is around NZ after the results of the General Election 0n 23 09 2017. Seven more days to go for final counting of the special votes.
Dosn’t mean to say there will be a new Government at that time.
With Mr Peters running the show,in 1996 it took 70 days,for a decision. Seems at the moment people are feeling “cruelled”,and are fearful of an action replay,to match 1996.Hope not.

    What was your take when well known ladies man, Justin Lester chose his friend Jill Day as deputy Mayoress. Day was a teacher who taught at a small school in Linden teaching children under intermediate age. Lester is off to China next week leaving his friend Jill Day running the city of 250,000 people. Her claim to fame under 12 months in council.
    Maybe it has become apparent that to run a city its not what you know,its who you know. Lets not have any elected experienced people in council, any council.
    Just go out pick or phone a friend for council,especially a female ,and they get annointed. Where have i seen that recently. If the face suits wear it.Being from the Lie-bour/Green cabal,people like Lester the mayor,dosn’t get any media scrutiny. Even if his decisions are unilateral.

      I’ve been gone from Wellington for over 3 years now and have only been back fleetingly for 2 cold, wet, windy visits. I’m hardly paying attention to anything happening there.
      
      My experience of dealing with Wellington City Councillors is that things were never as they seemed… everyone had hidden agendas.
      Sometimes the “baddies” did good things and quite often the “goodies” made almighty balls-ups.
      
      It looks like business as usual as far as I can see.

On Q + A this morning they are discussing MMP. The majority voted for hit twice. I did the first time but not the second.

I doubt if we will have a third vote anytime soon. It would be interesting to see a public poll a few months into the new government.

  The only real problem with MMP is the low threshold, it needs to be raised to ensure only serious Parties need apply rather than the assorted Fruitloop, ego-driven Vanity and Single Issue Nutter Parties that we have at present.

  It was interesting to see support for MMP trending down, IIRC from 70% in the 1990’s to about 58% in 2011. I hazard a guess if there was to be another vote then that support would now be even lower. Especially nowadays as voters voted en-mass to shore up either National or Labour during this election (perhaps Kiwi’s are sick and tired of MMP/ one man band type shenanigans)?
  
  It was also interesting to see on Q+A the archival footage of Jim Bolger (back in 1992 I think) saying words to the effect that the big flaw of MMP was having a minor party determine the outcome, but I think this time more Kiwi’s have now realised this and I suggest if Kiwi’s had better understood this back in the 80’s/90’s when MMP was being promoted, that a better, alternative, Proportional Representation system may in place now instead of MMP.
  
  Personally I’m quite open to looking at alternative PR systems.
  
  I haven’t quite made my mind up apart from knowing I’m weary of STV since it has had exposure at local body politics level – too complex and confusing for everyday Kiwi’s (who don’t pay much attention to politics and its complex machinations), plus it’s better suited to activist’s manipulating the vote in that they can vote for their preferred candidates and tactically vote out their opponents.
  
  I’m interested in knowing more about SM (Supplementary Member), as it is similar to MMP but only has 30 List MP’s instead of the present 60.
  
  Cue outrage from the minor Parties, as they would then wield less power … to which I say, how sad, never mind! 🙂
  
  Additional bonus, less List MP apparatchiks from ALL parties including the two majors!

A lovely day in Christchurch East. calm, a little overcast but the orchard is in spring clothes. The Kentish Fill Basket* is arrayed in bloom trying to out shine the Granny Smith with its very large blossoms.

When my wife got a call to ministry back in her home town she said she wanted an orchard–she loves trees. I expected we would have to go rural but we found a quarter acre suburban back lot and it’s now seriously planted out. The children have all thrived too and being set up for the future.

Was talking to some immigrants last night trying to explain how MMP works.

Some of their logical questions
– why didn’t Maori vote for their own party as that doesn’t make sense?
– how could a non Maori Party win sets specifically set aside for Maori?
– how can a party who only wins 7% hold the balance of power?
– why does it take a month to count special votes when on the night they counted ten times that amount in three hours?

All good questions which I actually struggled to come up with any logical answer for

      Yep, and assuming the Maori seats remain, perhaps National ought to rethink their stance of not standing candidates in them (and actually stand in them).
      
      I think you might not be supportive, but let me explain my rationale:
      
      1. Why should useless patronising Labour have a monopoly on the Maori seats when Labour doesn’t deliver for Maori?
      
      2. Whereas National have been delivering for Maori, so why not challenge Labour’s narrative “in their face”, directly in these seats and get the message out to Maori, that a vote for Labour is effectively a wasted vote.
      
      3. It would also allow National to pick up more List votes (the very thing that allows Parties to dominate MMP elections).
      
      As they say, just saying! 🙂
      
      Whether one likes it or not, we now live in an era where things “Maori” now have a greater prominence in NZ society (and media etc). So why not take advantage of that? After all it’s not like society will somehow magically revert back to the past!

    They will have a lein against her title for the amount owing, I assure you. It will be the first instrument too, so it must be paid before any other debtor. (Bank, mortgagee, loans etc..)
    
    Her protest ends the day her house is sold. Whether that be by council foreclosure or by private sale makes no difference, council gets paid at settlement. The fact they haven’t exercised this doesn’t mean they can’t, or won’t.

Youtube continues to stifle free speech. A little while back that demonetized videos that didn’t come up to their standards – that they considered offensive or something (not surprisingly, most were conservative), so video makers linked to Patreon to ask for money (similar to our Give A Little, but you patronize them with funds so they can keep making their material). Now youtube has said that they won’t allow any videos linking to Patreon that have been demonetized or that aren’t in youtube’s “partner program”.

I know a couple who are teachers and they have a rabid dislike… no hatred.. of the National education system plus anything National stands for.
Apparently Ardern has all the answers and they cannot wait for her to right the wrongs of our country.

Their attitude towards me has gone south after I called them communists.

What scares me is that they will have some influence on what their students – pre high school – pick up in their classes.

        I don’t accept that Ms Ardern was ever Tony Blair’s ‘gofer’. She’s on record as saying that she has never met Blair in person, so dropping his name in this context seems to have been an attempt to dress up her credentials.
        
        It’s not disputed that in her twenties she did work for a stint in the UK Cabinet Office, no doubt with the help of a friendly introduction from Helen Clark. But unless we have a clearer picture of her actual role (and its seniority) linking her early working life to something akin to Tony Blair’s personal assistant is less than realistic.

I heard someone pontificating on the radio yesterday about why teaching is not respected. he gave all the union type answers i.e. low pay, long hours (rubbish, they need to try the real world) and blah, blah, blah.   Teachers are a strange variety. I apologise to the exceptions but my years as a public servant where I dealt with a full cross section of the public gave me an insight into people. They were the most fractious when it came to form filling. The form never said what they though it did and they were always right. A study in the journal Nature Geoscience says the world has warmed more slowly than had been forecast by computer models, which were “on the hot side” and overstated the impact of emissions. You don’t say…

Global average temperature has risen by about 0.9C since pre-industrial times but there was a slowdown in the rate of warming for 15 years before 2014.

Er, would that be the slowdown that was authoritatively said not to have happened because the computer models all said it was impossible for it to happen, because everyone knew that rising CO2 levels inescapably caused global temperatures to rise and anyone who said the evidence of the slowdown showed the entire theory was bunkum and hogwash was a “denier”?

      Read the IPCC reports then. The policy summaries are different to what in the details. One Report (#3?) states that climate cannot be measured and we are dealing with a chaotic system and no valid forecasts are possible. Science buried in the small print.

Nothing is more off putting than discovering “scientists” planning to falsify data and present it as truth–fraud. This invalidates all the rest of their work and their associates work.

Getting back to the Kurdistan referendum on independence from Iraq.

As a keen amateur historian I have always supported a Kurdistan country carved out of Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria.

The Referendum gave a huge yes (92%) to independence.

But sadly I think they did not think it through. If you look at the map “Kurdistan” is landlocked and has no means of getting exports (oil) out or imports in, without the co-operation/permission of the other 4 countries.

And none of those countries wants an Independent Kurdistan to succeed as then the Kurds in their countries will want to join it.

We need a law change so the party that polls highest gets to go to the others NOT the other way around. If the party that polls the highest cant form a government then the next highest party gets to go to the others and so on.

Thats democracy. What we have now isnt. We have 7% party in the box seat with a 46% party having to hope the 7% party chooses it over the 35% party.

Gezzzzz.

I betcha Nats and Lab would support a change its would be to their advantage in the future.

  I’m not sure that such a law would achieve much (and I don’t know what “gets to go to the others” would mean in a formal sense). In terms of it being much more democratic – at the end of the day, the opposition will be those that fewer people voted for compared to those in government.

A number of media reports have asserted that our recent study in Nature Geoscience indicates that global temperatures are not rising as fast as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and hence that action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is no longer urgent.

Both assertions are false.

Our results are entirely in line with the IPCC’s 2013 prediction that temperatures in the 2020s would be 0.9-1.3 degrees above pre-industrial (See figures 2c and 3a of our article which show the IPCC prediction, our projections, and temperatures of recent years).

What we have done is to update the implications for the amount of carbon dioxide we can still emit while expecting global temperatures to remain below the Paris Climate Agreement goal of 1.5 degrees. We find that, to likely meet the Paris goal, emission reductions would need to begin immediately and reach zero in less than 40 years’ time.

While that is not geophysically impossible, to suggest that this means that measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are now unnecessary is clearly false.

Biased right-wing media turns on the spin cycle
Of course, many conservatives who want to maintain the status quo object to that reality. As we saw with the recent Ipso ruling, many right-wing media outlets will jump at any opportunity to misrepresent climate research in order to advance the climate denial agenda.

Unfortunately, Ben Webster of the London Times appears to have misunderstood co-author Myles Allen’s explanation of their study, and quoted him as saying:

We haven’t seen that rapid acceleration in warming after 2000 that we see in the models. We haven’t seen that in the observations.

Many climate scientists immediately pointed out this assertion is false. The UK Met Office noted, “The observations lie comfortably within the modelled range.”

The Daily Mail (reliable only for its unreliable climate reporting) subsequently claimed that the paper showed climate models had overestimated temperatures by ‘at least’ 0.3°C, and quoted Allen calling this “a big deal,” although the context of that quote was conveniently omitted. In a subsequent fact check at Carbon Brief, Zeke Hausfather detailed the many misunderstandings that led to this false conclusion. As fellow study co-author Piers Forster told Carbon Brief:

I think some press reporting is misleading as our paper did not assess climate impacts or climate model performance. Rather, our paper confirms the need for much increased urgent action from around the world if society stands a chance of limiting warming to 1.5C.

Myles Allen and study lead author Richard Millar took to The Guardian to criticize the conservative media outlets that had misrepresented their research. I spoke to Allen, who clarified that he was trying to explain that temperatures didn’t seem to be responding to carbon emissions as fast as the models used in the last IPCC report anticipated. Except the reasons for that have already been identified – the actual global energy imbalance hasn’t been as large as in the scenarios input into the climate models, and we have to compare apples-to-apples temperatures. As Allen and Millar wrote in The Guardian:

the IPCC specifically assessed that temperatures in the 2020s would be 0.9-1.3C warmer than pre-industrial, the lower end of which is already looking conservative. Anyone who had troubled to read our paper would have found this “IPCC AR5 Ch11 projection” helpfully labelled on two of our figures, and clearly consistent with our new results.

It appears that Ben Webster didn’t understand Allen’s explanation, and Allen was perhaps a bit careless with some of his words. As a result, Webster quoted Allen saying the models were running too hot. Conservative ‘journalists’ and opinion writers saw that seemingly juicy quote and without speaking to Allen or any other climate scientists, ran with it, completely distorting the actual findings of the paper in the process.

It’s been clear for years that conservative media outlets thrive on any comments from climate scientists that can be construed as supporting climate denial myths (model reliability being among the most popular myths). It’s unfortunate that climate scientists have to be so careful about what they say, but that’s the reality we live in. Biased conservative media outlets aren’t interested in accurately reporting scientific findings; they’re interested in advancing the climate denial agenda of manufacturing doubt in order to erode public support for climate policies. And so the grossly misleading ‘alarmist scientists admit they were wrong’ story was echoed by Breitbart, the Daily Mail, the Sun, the Herald Sun, Fox News, the Daily Caller, and many more.

I note that in the coverage of the NZ team v the Argies there is a huge crowd of……30,000 lol, that should put an immediate end to the ‘world famous’ tag that Kiwis keep pushing when talking about the national team.
Also, I find it hilarious that the NZ host of the broadcast is reduced to begging the local expert for praise about the NZ team.
Let’s just hope that the Argies can get the win, it will be really great for all 30,000 of their fans…..lol

        DPF does not share my views of what I thought was extreme nasty abuse.. trying to link me and ‘people like me” with the nervous breakdown of a NZ climate scientist (something that happened years before climate change became ‘controversial).
        Another time I was told Griff had received a standdown.. but he seemed to be able to freely comment the following days/weeks.
        
        I’ve figured out, either I ignore the crap from Griff/Gruffydd and carry on commenting….

Beautiful morning here in Dunedin, breakfasting at a gorgeous cafe serving fresh organic food, one of the delights to be enjoyed in this quaint town.
The train trip down the Taiere Gorge to Middlemarch is fantastic, the countryside recovering from winter storms which caused floods and slips.
From the train I could see the remains of the Hillside Rail workshops, a shadow of the past but perhaps the reason why this town is still a Labour stronghold with Clare Curran enjoying a healthy majority.
The lunch room banter at my workplace this last week has been animated and frank, southern folks are unapologetic about their political alliances, unlike my Auckland colleagues who are more guarded with their views.
Dunedin is a Labour town through and through and of course home to a large percentage of special votes. The locals talk of a Labour led government being a possibility. Maybe.
As Chuck Bird alluded to Jim Bolgers interview with Jessica Much on the Nation this morning was perhaps the best indication of what to expect from Winston this coming fortnight.
Sir Jim said that the option of sitting on the cross benches with a confidence and supply agreement looks likely. Depending on the specials it could go either way. We know specials favour the left, especially the Greens.
We could have a minority govt, and then again a Labour/ Greens govt.

A voting booth that apparently bucked the region’s National leanings had the local farming community scratching their heads.

One farmer said he couldn’t believe the figures. Another said there must have been a mistake.

Turns out they were right.

The commission’s preliminary results for the rural township showed of the 215 votes, a whopping 123 were for the Māori Party, compared to just 32 for National and 30 for Labour.

But on Friday the commission confirmed there had been a “data entry error” and those 123 votes actually belonged to National.

Before the commission’s revelation, Linkwater residents were gobsmacked by the preliminary figures, saying it was common knowledge the township was full of National supporters.

        I’ve seen dog roll made & it doesn’t tally with Griff’s comment above. What I saw was rubbish meat from animals that had died in the paddock, offal, meat/fish meal & carbohydrate from cereals rammed through an emulsifier, cooked & wrapped.
        
        Nothing terribly wrong with that but it was chocka with fat. A dog needs fat otherwise it can’t utilise the vitamins in it’s food but too much is bad.
        
        I’ve worked my dogs hard but all they’ve ever been fed is meat & dog biscuits.

        I can’t actually recall what I said, but I suspect it was irritation at Kiwibloggers’ tendency to conflate socialism and communism as if they were the same thing.
        In New Zealand, we have a moderately successful example of socialism working in those areas where it works best – welfare, health and education. Going further to attempts to build a true communists state (and hardcore communists would say that this has never been achieved) does not seem to be successful at all.

    I ashamed to say I used to be in the high carb – low fat school.
    
    Low carb – high fat is life changing and the results match the science. Unlike the plant based diet scam.
    
    Moderate amounts of fatty meat and as much salads and no carb veges as you like, will change your life. The difference can not be overstated.
    
    Many diabetics find they can cut back, and often eliminate, their medication.

A year ago, the United States made its biggest shift in policy since the start of its national dietary guidelines by dropping the warning about cholesterol. As it turns out, the scientific underpinning for the advice to reduce dietary cholesterol intake was lacking, and so the policymakers just dropped it.       Orthodox rabbi declares ban on soy as it ‘makes students gay’
      
      AN ultra-orthodox Jewish sect has banned its children from eating soy out of fears it will "make them gay". So just what must you skip to avoid becoming part of the rainbow set?
      In the Hebrew religious news website BaOlam Shel Haredim the Israel-based Gur Hasidic sect rabbi Abraham Benjamin Silberberg yesterday declared eating soy-based products would lead to “gay sexual activity” and that even a once-a-week dose would “cause unwanted arousal”.
      That’s apparently because it contains female hormone estrogen (in minute quantities).
      He also expressed concerns soy-based products would cause girls to sexually mature faster.
      As a result of these fears, the sect has now banned the consumption of all soy and soy-based products.

    Yes indeed. Many medical professionals say soy products are toxic and should be banned. It is incredibly bad for you.
    
    Asian cultures have eaten soy for years and remained healthy. The difference is they ate fermented soy.
    
    Next time you are shopping read the ingredient label of Almond and Soy milks. I have some in my fridge I purchased for a vegan. Disgusting stuff full of fillers, sugar and crap.
