      Have considered the wider implications that if Cinderella lets the Manus Islanders in to New Zealand, against Australia’s wishes, as they in short time will have access directly to Australia, that the Australians will retaliate by making visas compulsory for all New Zealanders to enter (and live) there.
      It is now in the Australian media SMH I am told are looking into it. Another piece of Kiwi bashing which their media love.
      Now that widens the overall implications regarding the 400,000 New Zealanders already living in Australia, for whatever reason.
      Surely this will mean that “all” New Zealanders there will have to reapply for a different visa to that which they currently have – even if they are only returning for say a Tangi.
      If not then they cannot return to Australia afterwards where they live without a valid reentry visa.
      By being there they will be on the same basis as all other immigrants.
      Can Cinderella be so stupid ? – yes, if she can get to the UN when she gets kicked out.

        Paulus: You are absolutely correct to be concerned about these matters. I am married to an Australian who lives there in a home we jointly own. I visit there regularly (and vice versa) but fear any retaliation from the Australians will make our lives more difficult. In the past I have regarded the two countries as practically one and it is a treat to shuttle back and forward. This could easily come to a sharp end. Jacinda is a silly woman whose mandate flows from the fact she “leads” a coalition of disparate losers. I despise what we currently have as a “government!” It is only 11 months since John Key led the best ever NZ Government. How things change….

        Key was offering a partial solution back in 2013, before OZ sorted themselves out with USA and PNG.
        
        There is no need for NZ to be involved with the OZ detainees now. They have all been offered safe refuge in PNG; they just don’t want to be there.

  Malcolm Turnbull is in deep doo doo at home and in a precarious position as PM of Australia.
  He has dropped significantly in ranking as preferred Prime Minister and Labor is polling ahead of his coalition.
  
  The Commie Chick is handing him an opportunity to score big with her childish pestering of him over 150 criminal, marauding queue jumpers.
  Turnbull could use this to show strength and introduce Visas for NZers to visit Australia.
  
  If Turnbull gets rolled internally Julie Bishop is ranking ahead of him in preferred Prime Minister stakes.
  This won’t go well for Labour NZ.
  
  At present this action of harassment by the commie agitator, Ardern, could be construed as a pincer movement by the NZ and AU Labo(u)r parties. Ergo, political interference at the highest level.
  This will sour trans-Tasman relations for decades to come.
  
  The Turnbull Govt is facing a series of expensive and destabilising by-elections over the tight citizenship rules of its elected representatives.
  There is little to gain for NZ from this agitator/harasser stance by Ardern of interfering in Australia’s Foreign Policy.
  
  This is the second time in a year NZ Labour have done this with their Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz (Kelvin Davis) agitating and pulling stunts over Australia’s dealing internally with convicted criminals.
  
  This does show that NZ Labour and their sidekick Greens are really operating at the level of student politics. East Timor, South Africa, blah blah. Lets chant slogans!

    I get the impression that Julie Bishop isn’t about to take any crap from Jacinda. NZ/Oz relations are looking precarious as Jacinda bangs on about the Manus Island refugees. I’m not sure that Jacinda has a mandate from the very people represents to ‘rescue’ these people. Even if her silly Finance Minister states that he is sure most New Zealanders’ would want her to do so. Three weeks in and she’s pissing off an awful lot of people……

    The upside to a strong anti-NZ measure affecting our access into Australia would be a massive shift by the public against the members of the COL. Denial of our relatively free entry rights into Australia would affect every Kiwi on both sides of the ditch travelling for whatever reason to/from Australia.
    
    The implications would be enormous for Labour should they act as the catalyst for such a move in our relationship with Australia.

      Jacinda has problems and is busy trying to create diversions before she returns to NZ. There is a uprising being put together over this trade deal that had not got the gains that Labour are trying to sell and the Greens are adamant that it is bad for NZ so won’t be supporting it. This is getting to the interesting stage as Winston was also opposing it against the last Government and has not stated anything different since Labour signed this deal.

        It turns out that National already had in place an arrangement with Australia that we would not use ISDS clauses against each other. That means that Jacinda’s supposed exchange of letters with Turnbull the other day meant nothing – just window dressing, and no net gain from Labour on ISDS.

      I posted this on another current KB thread about Manus Island, but I think that it is relevant in view of your comment:
      
      An interesting headline in this morning’s Hoorald over an an article written by Audrey Young:
      
      ‘PM on refugees: I’ll persist’.
      
      part of the article reads as follows: Jacinda Adern has acknowledged she might be seen as something of an irritant to Australia with her continued efforts to highlight the Manus island crisis during her first foray into regional summits…
      
      ‘Whenever one is persistent on an issue you always do run the risk of that’, said the…Prime Minister in Manila for the East Asia summit.
      
      But I think that it is important to continue to highlight that New Zealand is here to play a role , both to asist Australia with the situation that they have but to also ultimately to find a solution for those who are refugees’.
      
      Ardern is startign to gain some attention in Australia with Government minister Matt Canavan calling her comment a ‘PR stunt’.
      
      She [Adern] said it was a genuine offer by NZ as it was when it had been made by another Government and another leader, John Key, to Julia Gillard in 2013.
      
      She rejected a suggestion that she could be seen as interfering in Australian domestic affairs. ‘Not if I am working closely with them’.’
      
      One has to ask, what planet is El Teetho living on? The Aussies have told her to pull her head in, yet she simply doesn’t get the message ; her ‘concern’ for the plight of the poor, deprived’ refugees over-ruling any thought that perhaps she might just be cacking in someone else’s yard.
      
      I was going to ask ‘Is she THAT thick, but i suspect that the evidence would indicate that the reply would be in the affirmative.
      
      BTW: Where’s Winnie in all this? Surely as a previous Foreign Affairs minister he would know the ropes and have guided her response, or is he possibly waiting for her to give herself enough rope before disposing of her for a replacement? Given his past actions, it would seem that, unlikely as it appears, this is a feasible scenario. The ‘King maker’ appoints; the ‘King maker’ removes.
      
      If I were Cindy, I would be somewhat careful…

  Rational people will choose the policies that yield the best results.
  Japan is certainly taking an interest. She knows that necessity is the Mother of Invention, and will choose to think her way out of her demographic dilemma rather than taking the quick-and-easy route of simply importing a foreign culture as a labor source (and all the social friction that this generates).

      You raise some very good points. The Japanese labor shortage can be offset domestically through the application of robotics and through the retraining of workers from industries “liberated” by robotics (for example, long-distance truck drivers can now be retrained in elder-care.)
      I can just picture my old truckie mate–chain-smoking Hitoshi-san–learning how to wipe elderly bottoms and to feed pudding to Grandma Tanaka. (What could possibly go wrong…?)

The CoL they keep on giving.
Latest from Carmel Septic & the Redmelons, ” we must eliminate poverty for those living on the safety net of welfare”. This is with reference to getting rid of:
1. The need to declare absent fathers for DPB payments;
2. Getting rid of English’s investment targeting approach; and
3. Increasing WFF credits.

In other words more tax payer financed benefits for all & productivity will continue to fall, because living on a benefit can be a way of life, rather than working.
The plan is to undo much of what has been put in place over the past 30 years.
Great, can’t wait to hear how tax rates will need to rise to pay for it all!

      I would be most grateful if someone could explain this to me:

      So why do we ask the woman to name the father? Is it so that the State can get child support off him? Does the child support go to the mum or stay in the hands of the Govt?
      
      Put it another way, at present, what are the consequences for the woman if she names the dad? If she doesn’t?
      
      What do we expect to happen under Sepuloni’s change? Will there be an epidemic of single mums refusing to name the dad? Even of mums who are actually living with the dad, pretending that they aren’t?

        And yes, there will be an epidemic of mothers not declaring fathers. Do you see it as the responsibility of the state to pay for children not supported by their known parents? The NZ policy mirrored the UK policy in the 1990s, & left wing advocates have argued the same arguments for 25 years, but never put up real evidence in support of this policy doing the level of harm they claim.
        
        After all, welfare is meant to be a safety net for circumstances beyond the control of the recipient to put them back on their feet. It not meant as income to support a way of life.
        If you choose the latter, then you will also accept a low wage, low productivity economy.

  Removing the penalty for solo mothers who do not identify the father, so he pays some level of support for his child, is the dumbest policy yet from the CoL..
  So there will be a financial incentive for mothers to not name the father, and receive a back-handed payment off the books. Who suffers ? The taxpayer of course.
  It is Act who has pointed out this quiet announcement. Also Act who introduced Charter Schools, which are causing the Government much embarrassment as they seek to dismantle them. And Act vote against the ridiculous extension of paid parental leave, built on Ardern’s lies about the OECD average.
  Readers of this blog need to consider whether Act really deserve only 0.5% support. If they can find half a dozen solid candidates they deserve much more of our support.

      It’s a policy that encourages, people not to worry about the consequences, because the taxpayer is always there. On the radio, they were on about how $27.50/child that’ll come to these women will really help.
      
      Well I’ll put it another way, my child also needs that $27.50 – he has parents who don’t get WFF and attends a rural school that is rated decile 9, but has real funding issues (because most of the decile 9 parents send their children to schools south of the district). So, my child would like the tax that is extracted from his parents’ pockets to pay for the children in “poverdee” to remain in his parents pockets or at least go towards his school.

Just been reading that the Peters “selected” NZS Prime Minister “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern has invited the effeminate Canadian PM to visit NZ.
Goes by the name of Justin Trudeau the man with a womans face.
The same clown went to Vietnam and the APEC conference for a photo opportunity. He was exposed wearing no socks with his shoes . He has since developed an ankle rash.
Other than bringing that to NZ with Comrade Arderns invitation, wonder what else he can offer.
His claim to fame as an inept waste of space PM in that country of Canada, was to award a Canadian born Taleban Terrorist who had been in GITMO for the murder of a Special USA forces soldier.
The amount Trudeau give to the terrorist for hurty feelings was Ten Million Canadian Dollars. That decision caused huge outrage in Canada with up to 70% of Canadians almost in revolt mode.
Maybe our Peters “selected” PM Ardern is bringing him to NZ ,to drink the Koolaide with him.What a disgrace for such a terrorist hugging PM like Trudeau,to be invited to NZ .

    LSD and other drugs were commonly mixed in with Kool Aid for people to drink at hippy parties. Have a read of Ken Keasey’s book: “The Electric KoolAid Acid Test”. Different LSD/drug makers would sometimes use different colours for different mixes.

    The sub judice rule is designed to prevent interference with fair trial rights. Given that any claim for breach of privacy is likely to be heard before a Judge alone, it is hard to see how comment can affect such rights, unless of course Mr Peters thinks Judges are likely to be swayed by what he has to say to an extent that prejudices the fair trial rights of the parties. The excuse “I can’t comment because it is before the Court” is just a cop-out these days. Where an important matter of public interest is involved, a refusal to comment should be seen as evasion, not prudence.

  Silly questions. Abusers are everywhere. It’s about power. Wherever people have power, they use and abuse it. It’s not country, culture, job or gender specific.
  
  It’s not reported because the abused are, by definition, weaker, can’t ‘prove’ it, and/or have a lot to lose – and some consider it the ‘way of the world’ and a tolerable, acceptable, or convenient means to gaining advantage – like any other part of life.
  
  Liberalism has made it easier – with common acceptance that sexual contact need not be about relationship, that ‘everyone is doing it’, that it’s not important, and/or (as Bob Jones I think once said) it’s a ‘perk’ of power and success – especially when it’s known that both sexes go out on the town, get drunk, and make themselves available to anyone.
  
  Men are even more less likely to report it. They’ve always had the reputation of seeking to ‘sow their wild oats’ freely. Reporting sexual abuse can make them look silly and/or weak – but it’s always been there and is moreso now, right back to ‘Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat’ and beyond.
  
  As a child in a (then) small community, there were at least three pedophiles operating – a teacher, a councillor, and an ‘upright’ member of the community who was childless and liked to ‘spend time’ with other people’s children – and was allowed to take groups of them out for the day.
  
  Many of the ‘youth’ were operating a lot like Roastbusters – male and female. Not surprising given that many had been taught young by the pedophiles. It just got worse when I went to work. I’ve worked for companies where any female in a management position had to have had sex with one of male management. I’ve also worked for companies where men were hired specifically because a female manager wanted to have sex with them and/or would get no advancement unless they did.
  
  I know there are people blithely unaware of it, most probably thinking when they do come across it that it’s just an aberration in the one circumstance or about one person. There’s also those who see it as part of being besotted with someone, ‘normal’ sexual competition, or necessary while the wife is pregnant, for example.
  
  But it’s not. It’s an aberrant culture, part of bullying – and it isn’t going away. Modern society has normalised bullying, as long as it’s for the ‘right’ reasons – and they are very personally defined. Few seem to consider that it’s the bullying that’s wrong, irrespective of the reason, in which case it doesn’t take much to rationalise that it’s ‘okay’ behaviour at any given point in time.

    Yes and no. It’s been going on for centuries – slaves, serfs, servants, wards, etc. For example, Thomas Jefferson fathered children with one of his slaves, who herself was a half sister to his first wife, and her mother likewise had been the product of a master/slave liaison. Such activity seems widespread, and while some may have been mutually desired, a lot probably wasn’t.
    (I think the term “casting couch” dates back to the early 2oth century, but don’t quote me on that).

      I don’t disagree. As I say, it’s power. People talk a lot about all the ‘progress’ made. Meh. The human race hasn’t changed anything but the veneer; certainly hasn’t ‘progressed’ in any real terms unless it’s escalating self-harm.
      
      I object to those who pretend it doesn’t happen now, or that there are adequate protections, or that people have autonomy over their own bodies, or that ‘abusers’ are a special minority who are different to others. The slaves were overtly and with social acceptability devalued and dehumanised. We pretend that everyone has ‘equal rights’ which are ‘protected’ and can withhold ‘consent’ from such behaviour. Again, meh.
      
      But liberalism has normalised abuse in many ways. These days, someone is just as likely to say and/or think, “It’s good enough for ambulance officers, doctors, and teachers to be prostitutes which is entirely legal and a ‘job’. Why should the accounts clerk or IT manager resist? It’s a transaction. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. It doesn’t really matter. It’s always been so.”
      
      If society accepts that, fine. But don’t condemn the Roastbusters et al for applying the same principles – because it is the same principle – I want; I get. Just to prove that I can.
      
      Neither be surprised that when someone who is ‘normal’ and finally is financially secure and/or independent, they decide to tell the world, and a whole lot of other people who know they wouldn’t have been believed and/or taken seriously previously, decide to join in.
      
      None of that, either, covers Maori (and probably other cultures) situations where their own people, especially those with multiple problems including alcohol and drugs, can’t or won’t access their social services or don’t benefit from them because one or more ‘kaumatua’ involved in them have been their abusers. But it’s utterly unacceptable to ‘out’ those abusers or hold them accountable – cultural/tribal loyalty etc.

For as long as people have been in positions of power or influence over others, be they aristocracy, dictatorships, slave owners, religious leaders, the wealthy, educators, whatever, some have used those positions for sexual exploitation. Singling out the relatively recent idea of “liberalism” as the culprit seems misdirected.

There was a fascinating long form article in the New York Times today about the global campaigns by soft drink companies to deflect sugar taxes or criticism of their products.

I’ve always believed that the DPF’s opposition to taxes on soft drinks is less than genuine. This article does not help to change my opinion.

  I am not a big consumer of soft drinks an occasional treat or with rum or as an ice cream soda.
  
  But I am against higher taxes on sugary drinks.
  
  What I am in favour of is that the soft drink companies and all food manufacturers drop the amount of sugar in their drinks.
  
  Eg most people know that a can of coke has 6 tea spoons of sugar in it. Six.
  
  So, why not drop it by one tea spoon a year till it gets down to say 2 or 3 tea spoons. That we people would be consuming a lot less sugar and would still enjoy the drinks.

I think National are really missing an opportunity with the Manus Is issue. They need to get out and put the facts of what has gone on up there, what vetting has been done, what agreements with the US have been made, why those being rejected are being rejected (if that info is available) etc.
It is not going to be put out in the MSM. I know some useful stuff has been on Facebook but how many know where to look?
National do not have to make a determined criticism of the Govt. –just layout the facts so people can see the real picture.
To be more effective they really need to look at new, innovative communication strategies.

  Maybe they thought just reporting the facts was more important than checking with you to see if the they were politically incorrect facts? There has been some silliness here on this issue, but the issue of people smugglers is a legitimate concern. If taking the Manus Island refugees gives the people smugglers the idea that we are a soft touch we need to be very cautious.

Hipkins man. Now he’s said he is going to let schools choose whether they will keep National Standards. Except there won’t be national moderation. So the standards aren’t national. There is no psychometric component. So it is no longer a ‘standard’. Nothing is being tested. I guess schools will locally moderate, so you’ll get like, regional varying benchmarks. That will operate alongside ‘assessment against curriculum’ which means nothing, because standards aren’t national.

Okay lets say the advocates of non-standards education and any form of hierarchy come in. Can they at least agree it is blithering idiocy to try and combine two polar opposite irreconcilable and antithetical systems? Why? Why is he being such a little weirdo? Why can’t he just stick to his policy, say National Standards are wrong and stupid and teachers needs a 15% pay-rise and we need to adopt what lefties think is the no-homework Finland model and if you don’t like it, get stuffed? He is such a creep. I’m fucking worried for my kids. This is going to be a fucking mess for this entire term. What the fuck Chris.

Bob Geldof has, correctly, described Aung San Suu Kyi
as a “handmaiden to genocide and accomplice to murder”.

Bob Geldof has said he will return his Freedom of the City of Dublin in protest against the Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who also holds the award. Mr Geldof said “her association with our city shames us all”. Ms Suu Kyi has faced heavy criticism over her failure to address allegations of ethnic cleansing against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims. More than half a million Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh following recent violence.

Mr Geldof, the musician and founder of Band Aid, said in a statement: “Her association with our city shames us all and we should have no truck with it, even by default. We honoured her, now she appals and shames us.”

He is handing back the award at City Hall in the Irish capital on Monday morning.

      Peaceful protesters at the blockade were punched and kicked in the head, had their necks stood on, a wrist broken, fingers broken, and were picked up by the hair and thrown into oncoming traffic. Women were sexually assaulted. All of this was carried out by the police. People ended up in A&E and many were traumatised after being assaulted. Is this really the police just doing their job? And if this is the police’s job, is that something we should be comfortable with?
      
      Surely we should be more concerned about this local problem than the goings-on in Burma, Cambodia and Iraq?

Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1935 into law.

Starting Sept. 1, it will be legal for adults in Texas to open carry knives, daggers and swords.
