      Politicians are gradually edging closer to acknowledging the true causes and consequences of Britain’s dysfunctional housing sector.
      
      Prime Minister Theresa May took the next step this week, setting out clearly the stakes. In 1997, the average home cost 3.5 times the average wage. By 2010, that ratio had more than doubled. Demographia’s annual Housing Affordability Survey, which calculates median house prices divided by median incomes by region, suggests a ratio of 8.5 in London, 6.8 in Cambridge, 6.4 in Oxford and 7 in Bournemouth. Price signals are screaming “build more homes” in these areas.
      
      Housing demand has risen due to higher incomes, population growth and fragmented family structures. But supply has not kept pace for decades. Differences in land use planning laws mean we build in the wrong places too. The economist Paul Cheshire has shown that “twice as many houses were built in Doncaster and Barnsley in the five years to 2013 than in Oxford and Cambridge” – a clear sign that supply is not functioning to meet demand. …

        National’s leader Simon Bridges unleashed what is arguably the strongest weapon in his Opposition arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

        Collins – who was defeated by Bridges in last month’s leadership battle – has picked up the Housing and Urban Development portfolios and has been put in charge of National’s push to reform the Resource Management Act (RMA).
        
        She has also rocketed up the list and now sits at number four, behind the leader, deputy leader Paula Bennett and finance spokeswoman Amy Adams.
        
        Her high list ranking and her new shadow portfolios highlight National’s plans to zero in on housing in a big way; specifically targeting the Government’s Kiwibuild project.

        Kimbo, for my part, I don’t spend my time thinking about over done personalities on TV, in the media or anywhere else they wish to demonstrate their capabilities (or lack thereof). What is frustrating is how the media has been dumbed down to be nothing more than entertainment with presenter/broadcasters who do not have a clue what they are talking about. Whether it be on air or in print, this is meant to be sources of information. Is it any wonder we get the politicians we do, making the decisions that we then moan about?

        Kimbo, I beg to differ. People do read, watch and take in what the media feed them. You only need to travel on the tube in London to see this.
        You point to 3 elections as evidence of how savvy the electorate is, I disagree. In the case of Brexit there is/was a disconnect between the political/liberal “elite”, the media & the financial city of London versus the rest of the UK. The rest of the UK voted on their lot in life, their minds had been made up long before the campaign.
        Jacindamania, it is a damning indictment on NZ voters and NZ’s electoral system that she is a MP let alone PM. NZ has had its share of poor politicians, but none have risen to be PM before with the aid of such a fawning media.
        Regarding Trump, I have my views. I just feel sorry for the world that the choice Americans gave themselves was between Trump & Clinton (in my view a Hobson’s Choice).

        Yes, that was my point when I said the collective Western electorate Is more discerning and savvy about media machinations, and not just, as you implied, putty in their hands. So, sorry, I don’t understand what you are begging to differ over? That sometimes media hype and fawning press coverage delivers shallow politicians with whom you disagree and disapprove? Sorry, they have been complaining about that since Sir Robert Walpole.
        
        I thought John Key was a politician of substance, but I can understand the frustration of some of his critics and opponents, as it wasn’t just his substantial qualities that drew crucial voter support.
        
        But thanks for the response, nonetheless. And yes, I agree re the Trump/ Clinton non-choice.

    Sadly waikatogirl the innocent sole occupant in the other vehicle was a local woman off to work. The killer driver was needless to say a bro with a passenger but the only plus is they will not kill again. It is a tough call for Police to follow or chase since they will be damned if they or don’t. However in this instance they would have been hampered by the truck while they and the truck driver watched this rapid tragedy play out.

        You disregard the fact that if an offender flees the police, then that is totally their decision, and any damage they do resulting from this is down to them, not the police.
        
        For the police to just give in and stop pursuing fleeing criminals would be to allow anarchy to win and we might as well not have any police at all.
        
        How are the police supposed to know whether these scum are ‘minor’ or ‘serious’ offenders anyway? Even if they weren’t offenders previously, they become offenders the moment they decide to flee a lawful command to stop.

The media continues with sensational headlines about “police pursuits” when in fact the issue is people doing a runner when signalled to stop by police i.e. breaking the law. Those who run are solely responsible for the consequences of what happens from that point.
        
        Banning the police from chasing offenders is the first step on the slippery slope to anarchy. Whilst I am sure that would find favour with the Greens and with large tracts of Labour MP’s, I doubt NZ First would ever countenance such a policy, unless there was a bauble or three offered.

And a further point is that after this latest incident I read a couple of reports of statements made by some weak dribble police ‘spokesperson’ who blathered on about the ‘tragedy’ that the driver and occupants of the car died and how sad and painful it was for the poor cops who had to deal with the scene egc etc etc.
        
        To be fair, this pathetic dribble did make a passing reference to the innocent motorist who got killed….. but the whole tenor and his tone suggested overwhelming grief and sadness at the criminal’s death, rather than coming out with a strong condemnation of this scum’s actions.

    If police don’t chase, everyone will run. It happens enough now, just doesn’t get a lot of publicity unless there is a crash. Go fast enough or drive dangerously enough and you have a good chance of getting away.
    To me the safest long term solution is have a policy of NOT pulling out of chases. Anyone who runs has compulsory 6 months added to their sentence and any injuries caused are charged at the highest level and treated as a cumulative sentence.

      Not chasing them decreases the risk and increases the reward of fleeing. All it is going to do is make them want to flee more.
      
      What is needed is to change this around and make the message very, very clear by:
      A) Always pursuing them.
      -and-
      B) Making the cost associated with not stopping very, very high:
      * Crush the car
      * Lose license for 5 years
      * 6+ months jail time.
      – and –
      C) The above 6 month charge is in addition to any other charges (endangering life etc).
      – and –
      D) Manslaughter charges for the driver if anyone is killed during the pursuit.

    The police are responsible for the safety of innocent people. I’m not saying they should never chase but they should adopt a strategy that maximises public safety and it is reasonable to ask whether the current approach does that.
    
    For example, they might only need to chase one out of every five in order to have an effective deterrent, especially if the penalties for fleeing from police in a motor vehicle were increased.

      The Police are NOT responsible for the safety of innocent people beyond attempting to prevent bad guys (and it always is a bad guy ) from deliberately endangering them.
      
      As has been correctly pointed out the Police do not instigate a pursuit, the bad guys do.
      
      Unfortunately when bad guys decide their freedom is worth more than innocent peoples life sometimes some innocent people will get hurt.
      
      Far better that risk than the bad guy subsequently running down a line of schoolchildren because his behaviour has not been checked due to some ridiculous no-chasing policy.

Interestingly on Q & A yesterday Corin Dann with a panel of 2 of 3 leftists actually thought Robo was competent. The only non-leftist was Fran O’Sullivan, who is hardly a hardline red-blooded capitalist, but even she saw through Robo’s bull. It was obvious to me that Robo has been coached to give the impression that he knows something about economics and business. I was surprised no one really picked up on his contradictions. For example he said a rehearsed line about productivity, yet he later said that he was going to give teachers and nurses a massive pay increases for doing no extra production. Heck teachers are going to be paid more to do less. The education and health sectors have negative productivity. Giving nurses and doctors more leaves less available for new immunotherapy drugs and trust me there is going to be an avalanche of these about to arrive on the scene. Free tertiary education takes away money to employ the best from around the world so our Unis are going to fall further down the rankings.

  As I understand Teachers want 16% over two years and Midwives want a basic of $107,000 – that is for a 40 hour week, but they work considerable over time as is the nature of the job.
  If they do not like the rules of the Club then don’t join. Which is why they are short in numbers.
  Remember when the Midwives Union declared UDI and said to the Doctors involved get lost.

  I would vehemently disagree about productivity gains for nurses and doctors.
  
  Back in the bad old days of the 1980’s nurses weren’t allowed to take blood (unless doing that job specifically for the blood service), plaster limbs, do a ECG, insert IV cannulas, even give the first dose of IV antibiotics etc, and there was very limited specialisation. Ditto for junior doctors, a lot of procedures were done by more senior doctors.
  
  Roll on the 1990’s and 2000’s the pace of technology has extended hugely, with more patients requiring more highly complex care. Technology is now Nurses now do bloods, IV cannula insertions and a whole host of other things that were formerly the province of doctors. You have nurse practitioners and specialists in diabetes. Ditto again with doctors, with junior doctors taking on tasks that were formerly the province of SHO’s and registrars.
  
  Really, with the pace of technology these days increases in productivity are a given. Technically only is medicine and nursing a drain, there is the cost of preventing illness, treating illness and preventing disability and death to be counted. A healthy, working population is a good cash cow for the government.
  
  I can understand for teaching, because while we use more tech and are able to do distance learning for adults teaching hasn’t and won’t change that much. Only the theory has changed, and that isn’t necessarily for the better. I showed my kids how we were taught to add and they reckoned how we used to do instead of the linear method they teach them these days was so much easier to grasp.
  
  Even then, you have to give them something as clearly educational outcomes are still a thing and most people do pretty well out of their education.

  But the urbanites at their school have, and they have the teeth to match !
  
  It is up to parents and families to feed their kids, so the blame should lie with parents and not with the lack of fluoridation. This is challenging, however, when milk is dearer than Coke – fortunately our little ones can take a bucket down the back paddock and bring back as much milk as they need !

    When I was a kid we were given a fluoride tablet every morning with breakfast. They are difficult to find these days though ! I asked my daughter to consider fluoride tabs for the little ones, but she claimed they would not be necessary as long as she provided a reasonable diet and no Coke.
    
    So far she has been right ! I must admit I find it strange though, when I put out plates of stuff for the grandchildren to munch on they always seem to take the fruit first – they do eat some chips and crackers, but the fruit always goes first !

Each child was carrying a partially drunk litre bottle of coke which they were swigging from.     Shutting down the civilian part of GPS would probably be easy, and if a worl-wide serious conflict did erupt the US would do that anyway.
    
    Shutting down the military equivalent version might be a little harder as the US will have alternative mechanisms available. Interestingly I read that the US forces recently held an exercise where all GPS was turned off to practice coping without it, so maybe a shutdown of all satellite systems could occur. The satellites wouldn’t need to go, just broadcast enough interference from space or ground.

    New Zealand crime rates are pretty much on a par with other western countries. It is really just that there is so little else of interest happening here that the media relies on crime as a major source of news. This leads to exaggerated concern about crime, which means people are basically more frightened than they should be. The English papers don’t even bother reporting murders unless they are particularly intriguing or gruesome. Here a two-bit burglary might make the front page on a quiet day

    Well, most criminals (of the burglary and stealing cars type) are young – it’s a young mans game mostly. Mostly though, they’ve been raised in a sub-culture where personal demands trump social conformity allied with a disregard for the welfare of others. Gangs feast on these types – that is they recruit them as ideal members.
    
    Of course some are raised better but have critical psychological issues (typically psychopathy) that put them into the same space. But for most it’s an upbringing in a culture where such behaviour is normal indeed encouraged.

In a very interesting recent decision, the Court of Appeal has found that when imposing sentence for a second strike offence, the sentencing court is bound to take into account the fact that the legislation requires the offender to serve the full term of his sentence. This means that a sentence less than what might have been otherwise appropriate for the offence can be imposed to meet the interests of justice. In effect, the Court has read a requirement that sentencing Judges take into account manifest injustice even though that is not a statutory requirement.

In this particular case, the offender’s first strike offence was sex with a girl between 12 and 16, which Parliament has decreed to be a “serious violent offence” The Court has said that the absence of actual violence (in this case it was consensual sex between an 18 year old and a 14 year old) can also be taken into account in determining whether a lesser sentence can be imposed.
David Garrett will be apoplectic. Not only has the Court of Appeal read in a requirement that was apparently deliberately omitted by Parliament, but they are saying that even if an offence has been declared by Parliament to be a serious violent offence, if there hasn’t been any actual violence, it can be more or less overlooked in the right case.

i do have sympathy for the passengers though, while there is a good chance they are also pieces of shit.. Dime has been in cars with lunatics as a youngster. they could quite easily have done a runner from the cops and there isnt much ya can do from the passenger seat.

I have not watched the Sunday program on TV1 for years but last night, out of boredom, I was flicking channels and caught the piece on kids and tech devices and how addictive they are. It was very interesting and they backed up the “idea” of addiction with MRI scans to prove it. The little experiment with the family was quite revealing.
While with the kids in the piece it was obviously the games they were getting addicted to and not the device as such, it does show that schools have to careful with the push to doing everything on a device.

      Many years ago I was told by an elderly Wanganui gentleman that when he was a lad he and his friends used to find scattered human bones in the sand hills.
      
      He indicated that going by the number of smashed in skulls and other broken bones there were literally dozens & dozens of bodies. He figured they were killed in battle and not given a proper burial.

        If you mean South Beach.. then a couple of battles/ Massacres of Whanganui maori at Putiki (by Te Rauparaha) 1819, 1829 could be involved.
        
        If you mean Castlecliff Beach or those further north…Kai iwi/Nukumaru/Waitotara then you have a series of attacks on the Nga Rauru Kitahi in the 1820s by Te Rauparaha and Northern Taranaki tribes.
        
        Richard Taylor (early missionary in the Wanganui area.. talks of finding Moa bones throughout the West coast dune system, but doesn’t mention human burials/bones)
        
        The other thing to remember is that all the coastal terrace country from Mosstown-St Johns Hill and out along the Great North Road to Waitotara is sand-dune country. Some of the sand-dune systems I knew as a kid are now stabilised as pasture or forest-lots. The old chap might have been referring to inland dunes where massacres took place.

    The French student revolt of 1968 doesn’t seem to have been about race, as the current discontent in Britain is. From Wikipedia:

      Sure, the Paris student revolt of 1968 was ostensibly concerned with those things in the first instance (the classic Marxist grab bag)
      
      …but as ethnic studies, feminism, eco-activism and LGBT studies share the same dialectic epistemology, but take a step beyond Marxism’s exclusive economic concern, they are cut from the same cloth. Hence Marxism’s objections to imperialism are usually couched in a denunciation of alleged racism. Hence on American campuses at the same time, groups like the anti-Vietnam War protesters and Marxist Weathermen were cooperating with the likes of the Black Panthers.
      
      And I’m pretty sure this “hero” from Paris 1968, “Dany le Rouge/Danny the Red” has no problem adding anti-racism to the list of things his revolution will overthrow.

        The explanation is much more prosaic – kids into bed, cooking dinner, calls with folks in Singapore/Hong Kong, reading and occasionally a run with the dog tend to dominate my evening schedule before 10pm.

Sexual misconduct alleged at boozy Labour Party camp

Scandal 1:

The Labour Party has been hit with claims that four young supporters were sexually assaulted at one of its annual ‘Summer School’ camps near Waihi last month. The four – two males and two females – are all 16 and were allegedly assaulted or harassed by a 20-year-old man during a wild party on the second night of the camp. Newsroom has been told the man was intoxicated and put his hand down the pants of at least three of the four young people.

Scandal 2:

According to witnesses, a large variety of alcohol was available on Saturday night and many people, including a 15-year-old boy, were drinking. The “mountain” of alcohol included rum, vodka, cider and a large array of RTDs. Newsroom has seen videos of drunken scenes and at least one man stripped to the waist dancing on a table. Videos and photographs appeared on social media as the party raged into the early hours of the morning.

What a shame Ztev can’t join us to explain why there’s nothing to see here…

  Newsroom has learnt that one of the camp’s organisers has been in touch with the victims and informed them the incident had been reported to Labour’s Head Office. She is understood to have apologised on behalf of Young Labour and offered to support them in any way she could.
  
  Sources have told Newsroom that Young Labour has pledged it can do more to ensure the safety of young people at its camps and is reviewing its event management. Newsroom has heard that some of those attending the event are upset the response and offers of support have not come quickly enough.
  
  Labour’s General Secretary, Andrew Kirton said he was aware of the incident and was currently, “working through it”. Kirton told Newsroom he will soon provide a detailed response on the incident.
  
  It sounds like Labour HQ is treating this as an internal matter. Have the Police been notified? If not, why not?

This much I know:

Yesterday’s mega hyped cyclone turned into a damp squib. No one was blown out of their houses…..in the Far North the winds weren’t even brisk & the rain was…..wet.

The MSM will no doubt continue to push storm porn in their desperate bid for readers/viewers. One day, however, their greed will cause deaths when a jaded populace ignore media warnings of an actual threat seeing them as more click bait.
