We’ve reached the 40 million tree deficit mark.

Time for us to see SOMETHING !

This policy was thrust into our faces ad nauseum during the election period, now the time has come for us see some of the fruits of this promise.

We have just heard that 1 million seedlings may have been purchased, no evidence – just words. Unfortunately though, even if he was able to get these alleged seedlings into the ground this weekend, come Monday Shane will still be 40,000,000 behind. Time to put up or shut up !

  1 million seedlings haven’t been purchased, a nursery has been given 6(?) million to ramp up facilities so they can eventually produce the seedlings…

      NZ grows radiata for harvesting in 23-24 years. That’s what we need for construction. Native timber planting is not going to produce crops in out lifetimes. It may be helpful to put idle youth to work but priority needs to be given to timber volume now.
      
      Shane Jones may be looking at stirring the youth into action and cutting through Maori lethargy. I wish him well in that. If they benefit we all do.

    In this instance the distinction between communism and fascism is perhaps irrelevant. The extreme ends of both are equally totalitarian and we are witnessing the rise of totalitarianism in the UK. It is frightening and sickening in equal measure as it seems to be the product of the narrow mindedness of the young emerging from what passes for education today.

    Kimbo it appears you have never recovered from my previous Halal post:) That post and its associated text were copied from a facebook page wanting Halal certification banned. I agreed with many of the ideas espoused on that page. My concern, and it is an ongoing legitimate concern for many, is that some of the proceeds of Halal certification fund Islamic terrorism. Imam Tawhidi has confirmed this publicly. The other concern I have is that there is little to no labelling on Halal products to make it obvious to the consumer. It is deliberately hidden from unsuspecting eyes. It is blatantly obvious that manufacturers prefer the certification to remain hidden, so as not to jeopardise their returns. The entire Halal certification rort is a subversion. Your argument, that it would inflict unecessary costs onto the consumer through extra marketing and higher govt compliance costs is facile. An extra small crescent moon logo or some such other logo would be an insignificant addition to an already established digital template for print. A 1 minute job…if that.
    
    We both agree that some Muslims also view halal certification as a complete rort (not sanctioned in the Koran) so it perplexes me as to your staunch opposition to these”innocuous” religious practices as you so delicately describe them.
    
    As the government looks to make all dairy in NZ halal certified and perhaps, eventually, the transport methods, as is happening in other countries, the political influence of Islam grows.
    Step by step it grows. Separate swimming lanes, Madrassas, sharia courts…
    
    The influence if Islam and Sharia in NZ has some way to go before it reaches the political scale it has in the UK, but rest assured given the complicity of the likes of yourself and like minded politicians, its ascendancy is guaranteed.
    
    The 2018 pilot schemes are underway and more and more third worlders with their backwards stone age belief system , (a system that subjgates women to the status of mere chattel and has its own violent oppressive attitudes to homosexuals), are arriving on our shore in to take up residence on the taxpayer dime.
    Will they be persecuted Christians from Syria? Maybe a few for PR purposes.
    
    Rest assured the UN poodles in govt will bend over backwards in support of the 2018 UN Migration Compact, the UNHCR and its associated hate speech laws condemning/banning Conservative right wingers that criticise immigration policy and Islam.

After all, you post something for discussion in General Debate, seems to me good internet etiquette dictates you hang around to debate the matter. If not you are a troll like EAD, Nukuleka or Chuck Bird.
      
      Just to clarify, when you wrote that as an atheist you had the right for the government to protect you from being offended by religious practices (in particular halal-certified food)

        Halal certification is a rort not a religious freedom as you paint it. Nowhere in the Koran does it say that Halal certification is required. It is public knowledge that some of the proceeds go towards sponsoring Islamic terrorism. Imam Tawhidi has stated this publicly yet you continue to ignore this instead referring to more abstract religious freedoms. I support religious freedoms. I do not however support a totalitarian politicial movement masquerading as a religion with an ultimate end goal. You appear to be in total denial as to the ultimate aims of this movement.

        I consider it a government’s duty, to to protect its citizens from invaders esp the type that choose to murder and rape infidels, and whose ultimate goal is to change the entire fabric of western civilisation by supplanting the laws of the land with their own i.e. Sharia Law.         What they “prefer” is a matter of personal freedom. My good friend, here on Kiwiblog, Scott would “prefer” that the book of Genesis and a young earth were taught in the school science curriculum. In its own way that too is dangerous…but I don’t want Scott deported. Much less prohibit his right to try and propagate his ideas. Just as Muslims, and even fascists like you are free to advocate for sharia or crackdowns on halal, in the free market of ideas.
        
        But credit where it is due regarding the valid points you make, Rodney (and you may be interested to know my wife is much closer to your position than mine regarding Muslim migrants),
        
        …there is far too much pandering in the West to the fear that Muslims here or overseas may be offended (tough shit if they are) or worse, react violently (which should be opposed with the full force of the legal and security apparatus) if their faith is criticised by others exercising their freedom of speech. I am in agreement with the late Christopher Hitchens that, when Denmark suffered reprisals a number of years go due to an unfavourable cartoon of Mohammed in a Danish newspaper, every newspaper in the West should have printed a copy. Because they didn’t, and send a clear message we are prepared to defend our freedoms by non-fascist means against illegimate Islamic encroachment, it is now much more difficult to push back collectively.
        
        On a brighter note, and as per my post below, do I have your permission to nominate you as a replacement when Dame Susan Devoy ends her current tenure? We need someone with the skills to undermine and sabotage her useless office from the inside, and you seem the ideal person.     Sharia Law has already gained a foothold in parts of the UK, Sweden and Germany, due to capitulation from European governments. Under tremendous pressure not to offend the invaders they are awarded their ‘freedoms’ in exchange for peaceful integration, love and tolerance of all:)
    
    Sadly as evidenced over the last few years there have been a few hiccups or as some of us call it the Diversity Dividend.
    
    According to Lord Pearson, the dividends are causing great dissent at a grass roots level.
    This instability may well prove to be the downfall of the UK.
    
    One can live in hope as you no longer need to, being in that number and all, that the resistance will meet the aggressors swiftly and head on, before the fall of civilisation to this backwards cult.

      …while in the main preserving the right to freedom of belief for ordinary communists, and protecting their right to propagate them by legal and legitimate means. And we still won the Cold War.

  To pick any fruit requires firstly the person turn up at the appropriate time, sober and not under the influence of drugs.
  Secondly the orchard owner expects that after simple training that the fruit is correctly picked and not damaged in the process.
  To expect that the full shift is completed with all and more regulation breaks, food and drink provided (tea/coffee) at which time no drugs are consumed.

The High Court overturned a conviction where a guy ordered a pizza to be sent to another person’s address presumably to get at that person. It seems this was not the first time the accused was doing this sort of thing but there was no hard evidence. It did so because the Police by phone tricked the accused into revealing his identity and the court regarded this as unacceptable. The police had made efforts to trace the cell phone number but without success (as can be the case with prepaid sim cards). Hence if the Police did not ‘trick’ the accused, the accused would not have been brought to justice and could well have continued that inappropriate behaviour.
This is one of a string of cases where courts (backed by the Appeal Court) has effectively ‘punished’ the Police for investigation transgressions by refusing to convict or refusing to admit evidence obtained by such a transgression. However in doing so the courts are denying the victims ‘justice’ since the courts are more concerned with what the Police did than the impact of the offence on the victim. In this case there were two or even three victims – the pizza shop, the delivery driver and the person in whose name the pizza was delivered. They deserve better than this from the courts.

  I agree with the Courts. Without their checks the police can do as they please. It is galling to a prosecutor to lose on faulty evidence but there will be words with the officers involved about their conduct.

    Consideration of the victim should also be a factor. and this is especially applicable in this instance where further repeat offending against this or other victims was possible. While one instance might be regarded as trivial continuation of this becomes serious and can adversely impact on the victim’s mental health. Given that there was no other reasonable way of identifying the offender, the judge did the balancing wrongly, the conviction should have remained even though trickery was used. Fortunately the Police had the guts to stop this nonsense even if they might have overstepped the line slightly.

There has now developed in NZ a huge gulf between justice and legal law – all at the hands of the legal “profession” who are in charge of the system run by them for them.

It is good to see some progress on the Manawatu-Hawkes Bay road link.
The things that stand out so far, in the form of questions put to a senior, and experienced geological engineer with knowledge of the situation – and his answers in bold.:
1. No start before 2020 – year and a bit away…not bad
2. Four years to complete — that’s fast for a highway
3. MUCH better gradients – yes, not going so high
4. No cost yet – about 450-550 m$
5. Will Pahiatua track be upgraded. – not part of the deal…its a new road between Saddle Road and the gorge (i.e. north of gorge)
6. Is the geology better ? – about same as Saddle Road in soft Tertiary rock mainly – not greywacke, no steep slopes like in the gorge

So nobody at all has found any Trump collusion with Russia (all the legal scholars have said it is not a crime anyhow), so SB is now charging Trump with firing Comey as obstruction of justice, but all legal scholars have said President Trump is constitutionally allowed to fired the FBI director.

Last night I was at the Big Shot event in central Chch, watching Dame Val and Tom Walsh in full form. Now each thrower has 6 throws with about 11 throwers competing, anyhow sometime during round 2 or 3 I noticed Duncan Webb turn up with his Labour jacket on. Oh Lord how crass. Anyhow he, a few minutes later after he tried doing selfies, up and left after one round. Not staying to see who won. He got pics of 6-7 throws and was gone. Man this guy is fake, and I noticed it on his FB and Twitter pages that night he was at the Big Shot. I noticed that his FB and Twitter pages were littered with multiculturalism as well, great another plonker.

Great news for some UK Foreign Service staff. Russia is to expel some UK diplomats in retaliation for UK expelling Russian diplomats. Has not Russia learned? It is unedifying for the Russians for the expelled UK diplomats to be seen grinning from ear to ear as they board the plane wondering whether they are going to get Wellington or Canberra next.

There’s a lot I can agree with in what Lizzie Marvelly has written in the NZH. At least she’s coming from a better space than the wretchedly compromised MSM, lawyers, business people, and politicians.

While the MSM should show greater sensitivity to victims of abuse, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, that only applies to the ‘shaming’ of them on behalf of their political masters. They need to be keeping it in the public eye and confronting it to stop it – if they have any genuine desire to redress our disgusting social statistics. Those statistics represent only the ‘undisguised’ results, mostly at the lower socioeconomic end of the scale; the groups in society who can be safely designated ‘them’, not ‘us’.

The statistics, which I think are underestimated, sound bad enough: “In New Zealand, 24 per cent of women and 6 per cent of men will experience sexual violence during their lives.” The reality is that, on a population of 5 million, that equates to 30% of NZers – or 1,500,000 human beings.
Her further statistics: “Only an estimated 9 per cent of sexual assaults are reported. Only 31 per cent of reported sexual assaults make it to the prosecution stage. Only 13 per cent of sexual assault cases result in a conviction.” Those translate to: 135,000 are reported; 41,850 are prosecuted; and 5,440 of those prosecutions succeed. Out of 1,500,000 human ‘prey’. How many ‘predators’? Not that many, sure. Predators have lots of victims each. But more than enough.

She’s REALLY right in saying: “Sexual violence is an epidemic. Where is the outbreak response?…. there’s plenty that we could do to tackle the problem head on, but despite obvious evidence of the scope of the issue, we remain suspiciously lethargic in our response.”

And ‘we’ are, very lethargic. Mostly because the predators, and those who allow them to continue to operate, are in the same class as Andrew Kirton (and I’m not suggesting he’s a predator but I’m absolutely sure he, and his wife, know it goes on, if only in the Labour party). These are the people, like Harvey Weinstein, who:
“He’s one of our best, a serious talent… is a first-class general secretary…Described by those in the party as smart, personable, empathetic and very capable, he is widely seen as someone who would make a great MP…already being marked as a good political operator by 2005, when he co-chaired the NZ University Students’ Association with Camilla Belich, who is now his wife and mother of their two daughters…Belich, who is also a member of the Labour Party, is a lawyer for Bartlett Law…The high-flying couple are seen as having great political potential, fuelling speculation that both of them could become Labour MPs…It’s a very serious thing because some people have been mistreated. But knowing Andrew, he would have been guided at all times by doing the right thing for the victims as he understood it.”

Yeah, right. I’m sure both he and his wife would have no problem outing the extensive abusive systems amongst the ‘respectable’ in our community, from the cradle to the grave, but especially from adolescence up. Not. He hasn’t done too well at Labour summer camp. All, of course, in the name of protecting the ‘victims’. Rubbish. They’re protecting the predators and those who protect them.

The Russell McVeagh et al inquiry is life imitating art. The lastest Scandal episode is about the same system applying amongst Washington political interns. But the US is the ‘land of the free’. NZ is the land of the ‘prey’.

NZ has specialised in normalising deviancy because when people are turned into sexual ‘prey’, it is deviant and has consequences for them mentally, emotionally, and physically. We liberalise abortion to deal with the ‘mistakes’ more easily; and prostitution to make people feel ‘better’ about themselves. Young, gay men are encouraged to participate in state-sponsored porn parades with the height of their annual calendar being to attend 14-hour sex parties where their penis can be objectified with ‘pride’, heterosexuals invited to gaze in admiration of their ‘performance’. And the public should be reinforcing it all by being forced to walk over Rainbow crossings in celebration, with the same ‘pride’. ‘We’ don’t know where healthy boundaries are anymore – and God help anyone who tries to say so.

The lethargic response to the ‘epidemic outbreak’ of sexual violence is because all the boundaries have been blurred in the name of ‘liberalism’ and ‘progression’. The result is the worst rates of domestic violence and abuse in the world, teen suicide, mental health problems, epidemic alcohol and drug issues with those only too ready to provide and use them for ‘comfort’, and STDs.

Good on Lizzie Marvelly. She has to contend against those who claim this is all ‘good fun’, the ‘perks of the job’, positively indulging the ‘dirty side’ of human nature, ‘normal’ sexual experimentation, ‘finding a wife’. But the problem very definitely should cease to be hidden. It’s time the victims started standing up with ‘pride’ to stop their abuse and time the wider society started supporting them instead of accusing them of being some sort of anal moralists which is how they’re usually portrayed.

Children and youth, in particular, need to be hearing the message and acting in their own best interests to stop it instead of sliding into an increasingly black hole of despair.

I thought when Winston Peters was negotiating to form the next Government that it was stressed that everybody from their Executive to MPs had a say on how the Party came to making decisions.Well I would like to know why we have heard nothing from the Foreign Minister, Party Leader or Deputy Leader of NZ First over the reason a coalition deal demanded by NZ First in their contract with Labour agreeing to have a trade deal with Russia has been broken. Now because Winston has obviously spat the dummy and is not prepared to front the Media rescinding earlier statements he has been suggesting about Russia why hasn’t the Deputy Leader or Party President fronted and cleared up the irresponsible statements Peters made days before Labour announced all trade deals with Russia will not proceed. This either shows you Peters is the only one that runs Winston First Party or the majority of the MP’s cower to his decisions.

Fifty years ago today, an American massacre of Vietnamese civilians created outrage around the world. University of Auckland’s Liam Appleton retells the story and explains the complicated legacies of the My Lai Massacre that also touched New Zealand.

On the morning of March 16, 1968, American soldiers massacred as many as 504 civilians in a small settlement known on US Army maps as My Lai. Almost all of them were old men, women and children. Scenes and accounts of the atrocity intensified worldwide condemnation of an already divisive and evermore unpopular American war effort in Vietnam, and New Zealand was not left out.

American Vice President Spiro Agnew briefly visited New Zealand in January 1970, not long after the massacre became public knowledge. A large group of young marchers descended upon his Auckland hotel, where they conducted a raucous protest until around 200 police arrived and violently removed them shortly before midnight. In May 1971, police likewise blocked a small group of protestors dressed as bloodied Vietnamese peasants at an Auckland parade by the returning 161st Battery…..”

  Instructive on a larger scale is the contrast between the coverage of the American massacre at My Lai and the Viet Cong massacre at Hue. At My Lai, a junior American officer allowed his men to kill dozens of presumably uninvolved farmers in full violation of standing orders.
  At Hue, the former imperial capital, the Viet Cong killed several thousand community leaders, including a number of Europeans, in accordance with standing orders to “destroy the bourgeoisie.”
  The U.S. military’s attempt to suppress reports of the My Lai massacre, of course, made it even worse when the story was finally released by the Dispatch News Agency, a curious organization that came into existence in Viet Nam with unknown financial backing and vanished once its purpose of opposing the war had brought Hanoi victory. But the Hue massacre was, somehow, uninteresting. Few correspondents reported that clear signal of the real policies the North Vietnamese would pursue once they had conquered the South.
  
  By the same token, American restraint was not news, even to the experienced correspondents, because it was a “non-event.” Flying in a command helicopter of the Ninth Division over the Mekong Delta, another U.S. correspondent and I heard the brigade commander countermand his battalion commander’s order to the infantry and the helicopter gunships to attack some 100 enemy who were pouring out of a surrounded village, still firing.
  
  “Do not, repeat do not, attack,” the colonel directed. “They’re using women and children as shields.”
  
  Neither my colleague nor myself thought the incident worth reporting; that was a palpable error of judgment induced by the atmosphere in which we were working. If the Ninth Division had killed the civilians, we would have filed copiously.

    They suffered thirst, hunger, and many were drowned, raped or murdered by the same type of pirate scum who have been trying to flood Australia with economic gatecrashers.
    
    I notice Appleton doesn’t mention Hugh Thompson, the US Army helicopter pilot who landed and halted the My lai massacre by threatening to open fire on his fellow countrymen.

  Unfortunately in war atrocities occur, no matter who is involved. It is pointless trying to score political points by highlighting the atrocities perpetuated by one country. There is no point in trying to create a balance sheet and declare one country more moral than another. The My Lai Massacre was wrong. But it was one lieutenant who was deranged and a platoon of soldiers that refused to follow their moral compass. British submarine captains shot survivors of sinking German ships in cold blood as they could not take prisoners. POWs were executed after escaping, Americans shot Germans surrendering in the Battle of the Bulge, most German POWs never returned from Russia, Hiroshima and Nagasaki happened. Its easy now to sit back and condemn, but none of us were there, few of us have done Military training, even fewer have seen first hand the horrors of the battle field. Don’t judge. . remember and pray it never happens again.

Sweden had mandatory military service (Swedish: värnplikt) for men between 1901 and 2010. … On March 2, 2017, the Swedish government decided to reintroduce military conscription, meaning 4,000 men and women will be called up for service from 1 January 2018. Interesting, do they know something that we don’t? But if brought up here…even our own regulars would be upset. Waste of budget etc etc. We no longer mix as a race of NZers (formerly virtual two types-Maori/PI and European)-either at rugby or schools, we have a de facto socio/racial divide. The military might be the only organisation that forces co-operation and integration/assimilation between us all.

  The Herald is reluctant to provide a description of the perpetrators, even though it has information about the South Korean owner (who was concerned about getting into trouble if he injured one of the perpetrators defending his property).

    Pacific Island mums tend to feed their children well.
    When I read about horrific crimes like this, or the 19 year old in today’s Herald who raped and murdered a 69 year old Chinese lady, I always want to know HOW did these violent individuals get this way.
    Rarely are we told.
    But we get a few clues: usually no mention of a dad in the picture.
    When a woman produces a handicapped child, the family gets “early intervention ” to give that child the best possible chance in life.
    Why are we not doing this for all the kids dragged up in appalling homes?

    While I agree this is long over due, the fact that his wife was a Democrat is irrelevant. I read yesterday the pension bit is a little more complicated RF –it is affected but may not be zilch.
    I think the most important thing here is that it was internal FBI review of McCabe’s actions that recommended he be fired, so it becomes difficult to make out it was political.

      His firing was recommended by the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and the IG of the DOJ (an Obama appointee btw).
      He leaked to the Press and lied on his reports and under Oath
      There’s going to be a second Special Counsel appointed because of the forthcoming IGs report.
      Expect others to be punished.
      And what about Muellers guy Strozk arranging secret meetings with the FISA Judge…
      Flynn is going to get charges withdrawn because of the changed reports too.

        Sessions already has some one “from outside DC” with DoJ experience, looking into things and has been at it for a few months. There has obviously been a lot going on behind the scenes that very few people know much about.
        I agree All_on_Red, the hammer is coming down.
        I just hope the IG’s report is as good as it is being hyped up to be.

How safe is your money in the bank?

Brian Gaynor raises this in his weekly article today in the Hooerald.

It’s about time we started looking at just how good is our bank-overseeing Reserve Bank.

It didn’t seem to perform well in the crash of finance companies, and it’s supposed to be the watcher of insurance companies in NZ. But we don’t hear much about its performance or governance in these areas.

It has a board of governors, who unlike the governors of America’s Federal Reserve boards, don’t seem to participate in economic decisions. Their role seems to be make recommendations on appointments to the government and to provide moral support for the Governor. I suspect some of the directors also were behind the decision to officially rename the nationality of NZ’s currency: Aotearoa New Zealand.

It’s time for another look at the Reserve Bank. It looks a little as though it were designed for the last crisis or the one before that.

We don’t want to be the economic equivalent of a Navy stuck with battleships in the age of aircraft carriers, or stuck with aircraft carriers in the age of guided missiles.

They have just announced they have sold 30 properties in Panmure to fund a massive redevelopment of the Panmure town centre

Now the sale raised $104M and the budget for the redevelopment is $50M with the project taking up to 20 years.

        I reckon Rodney Randall would shake things up a bit, and hasten the overdue demise of an office that, irrespective of Dame Susan Devoy’s performance (she has done ok, considering IMHO), has long since ceased to be of any useful value. Babies and young children are hard work, and it is only the maternal /paternal bond that saves them from being bashed.
Lionesses are sometimes killed trying to protect their cubs from lions that want to kill another lion’s offspring.
In the human world, many mothers delude themselves that it is safe to leave their babies with a non-biological father/parent figure.
The facts are, a young child is 50-100 times more likely to be killed by mum’s boyfriend as the baby’s real father.
Women and girls no longer need to stay with their child’s father for financial support, as the state will support them.
This situation is fueling the problem of bashed infants.

    Most of these airheads have been taught that they have to produce heaps of babies to prove they’re a “real woman “.
    Whereas the guys in the cultures they come from feel no obligation to support or even have a relationship with their own offspring.
    Many of the mums don’t even expect their children’s dads to stick around.
    I have met heaps of young Maori mothers pushing out umpteen kids to the latest boyfriend.
    Most of their daughters have already been molested by a previous boyfriend.
    A few years ago I visited a home where 3 women, all related to eachother and on the booze, were pregnant to the same guy who had taken off down the line.
    Many of these kids end up in gangs after mum abandons them too.
    And then they go rob dairies and beat the cr*p out of hard-working immigrants……

        Most cultures on this planet behave very much like so-called lower species: impregnating multiple females to spread their genes, but without caring for the resulting kids.

395 is 71 more than the year to date score for this time last year. Anything more than about 342 is statistically significant.

Genter, if you ARE trying to do something, then please, please, PLEASE stop whatever you are doing. It clearly isn’t working.
