Right of way is Way of Right

Johnathan Coleman is moving on, after being offered, unsolicited, a highly paid job in the private sector, and good luck to him.

As seems to be the routine when a National Party MP moves on these days, one of the first to poke his immaculately coiffed hair above the parapet is Winston Peters. As usual Winston has conducted himself like a charter school after Chris Hipkins has dealt with it; with no class whatsoever.

I fail to understand what Winston is hoping to gain by his continual disparaging of National MP’s as they take their leave of the chamber. He simply, once again, clearly demonstrates how petty and venal he is. He’s clearly trying to emulate his idol, Robert Muldoon, and failing badly in all aspects, save the consumption of alcohol.

Or perhaps he’s simply dealing with an unpalatable truth.

After 13 years in Parliament, Coleman is moving on after having received an unsolicited offer that he couldn’t refuse.

After 33 years in Parliament, nobody wants anything to do with Winston, and he can clearly see that once he leaves the House, he will be consigned to history as an annoying footnote, slipping from king-maker to an irrelevancy, unsuitable to even be the NZ ambassador to Burkina Faso.

I cannot wait for that day, and I hope it comes soon. He can take the rest of the NZ first rabble with him!

  Winston says National Party MPs are falling like dominos, and there are more to go. Perhaps Winston should consider that he is far more ancient than those MPs and is way past time to make his own departure. His retirement from his position will be just that, retirement to slippers by the fire. As Jonathon Coleman said, it is always better to leave while at the top (and while you are still young enough to be employed elsewhere).

    At least Jonathon Colman is not a fruad like Winston Peters or having to grovel for the old age vote with lies and deception. Jonathon Colman is wanted in the health sector and still can contribute to NZ and the elderly where Peters has only one option and that is date with the undertaker and the way he looks and talks it could be sooner than later.

  Why would Jonathan Coleman, a registered doctor, hang around on an MP’s pay package when he could earn more by practising as a GP. He’s got two young kids to think about and his new employer is probably paying him at least three times his current pay as an MP plus bonuses. It’s a total no-brainer.

      They should indeed have done this – however, that didn’t fit with John Key’s Labour Lite approach. The list of things they should have done is much longer than the things they actually did do.
      
      Sadly, I’m not seeing any signs that the more progressive Bridges, Bennett, Adams front row is going to be any more centre-right than before.

  I was very surprised at Ms Collins’ simpering demeanour on the Garner programme at the time.
  She giggled and darted flirty looks at the ghastly Twyford giving the impression that they were friendly colleagues rather than from opposite “sides”. All rather puzzling for we peasants in the regions and reinforcement that what goes on in private national politics is essentially a charade and sham.

Phil Twyford Introduces Bill to Ban Letting Fees

Seriously, how economically ignorant is this guy;

“I don’t know of any other area of the law where two parties can contract for a provision of services but then charge a third party.”

Just off the top of my head, how about taxi and bus services from airports, which directly pass on the fee the airport changes them. Or the shipping fee whenever you order something online. There are numerous examples.

And even when businesses don’t directly pass on a fee by name, any time they incur an additional expense it will ultimately be passed on to a customer. Which is why Twyford’s bill is so utterly pointless. Landlords which incur letting fees will simply estimate how long tenants stay on average, do the math, and increase the weekly rent by however much is needed to cover it. It may no longer be itemized out separately, but tenants will still be paying the letting fee.

  I am with Phil on this one. When you buy a house you are not expected to pay the commission of the agent engaged by the vendor. Should be same with letting. The situation is influenced by power imbalance between the parties.
  As for the airport example there is a good case for the Commerce Commission to regulate fees imposed on public transport and taxi operators and possibly on short term parking (up to one hour). Airside fees are already regulated so the same should apply to fees for essential land side service. Incidentally I wonder if Auckland Airport imposes fees on the 380 bus service at the airport (I use the 380 bus and train from Papatoetoe when using Auckland Airport).

      Agreed, but if the landlord has to pay, market forces will ensure the fee is reasonable. If the tenant has to pay, this limits market forces from working and letting agencies could get away with charging unwarranted fees. There is no competition when costs can be foisted on to someone else.

        I don’t understand this argument. The fee is not a secret and tenants care about what they pay in total, i.e. rent plus fee. If that total is unreasonable, tenants can look for a better deal elsewhere. If nobody is offering a better deal, why conclude the amount is unreasonable?

    For renters already in the market, that should essentially be the only cost of getting into a rental and only if getting the property, bonds etc should be transferable if they have been good tenants. There could possibly be a fixed fee, but property managers travelling to and from properties showing them aren’t and naturally vary in big and small towns, and cities, but then selling agents on commission have that cost too. Property managers seem to be on salary.

      Property managers may be on salaries but it is the owners of letting agents and their franchisors who make profits. Quinovic for example is a franchise operation where the franchisor has developed the systems etc under which the franchisees and their individual property managers work.

    Well, he’s sort of right on both. Many landlords already cost letting fees into the weekly rent, and those won’t be affected by this bill. But those who currently charge the letting fee separately won’t just soak up the expense.
    
    Where he’s completely wrong is the claim this will save renters huge amounts of money. Presumably he has some delusional idea that landlords will just happily accept the loss. They won’t. They will pass on the expense to tenants one way or another, and all this bill does is prevent them from labelling the expense directly.

      Actually, those that current charge it up front are in for a long term windfall.
      
      They will increase their weekly rent by about 2% and renters will now pay this once off charge year in, year out.

        For new lets landlords will aim for maximum rental anyway so while landlords could load rentals slightly now, market forces down the track will minimise such loadings. What it will do is encourage landlords to ensure they are getting value for money on what they are paying letting agencies – a discipline that landlords and agents do not face at present. Also letting fees is another up-front burden that cash strapped tenants have to bear.

        As per my post of a few days ago, I think Devoy has done ok, as well as anyone could have given the brief, and the agenda that would be set by her department. While I’m sure she has a lot of common sense courtesy of her problem-solving sporting background, her fundraising and her advocacy on behalf of those with disabilities, it is hard for someone from a non-executive background to stand up to that and avoid departmental capture. Especially with a bunch of professional zealots that the Human Rights Commission is likely to attract.
        
        But the essential problem is not Devoy, but the ridiculous and out-dated office. Should have been abolished years ago. Then again, and while I have no doubt she was well-intentioned irrespective of the large salary, Devoy chose to take the position, so she gets the criticism.

A convicted person who is effectively “let off” will know that he/she is likely to be “let off” again after further offending.

This is so sick that the rights and future employment prospects of this despicable thug were paramount over the rights and justice for a 9 month old baby.

        The substance of the claim is that Islamic rape gangs are endemic throughout the UK, that they are still operating and that the authorities are doing virtually nothing about it.
        Sadly for your argument the claim seems credible. The scale of gang rape in Rotherham was such that even the authorities and the Muslim apologist media could not keep a lid on it.
        
        I noted yesterday that Germany is overwhelmed by Muslim immigrants, or to be precise Muslim immigrant men, sexually assaulting German women. Apparently in Sweden the beautiful blonde haired women are dying their hair black to escape the depredations of Muslim male immigrants.
        
        So I don’t see what your argument is? It is not a phobia to want to protect a country’s women from rape. The authorities in Germany and Great Britain and Sweden need to crack down on it.

Twitford says he will be having discussions on the need of Air NZ to service the regions.

What needs to be done is for Air NZ to be held to account for their predatory marketing against smaller airlines who attempt to set up business flying regional routes. Air NZ swoop in with the likes of Freedom Air with lower ticket prices just long enough to put the new airline out of business. Air NZ then dump that region once again.

  Many of those air travellers from minor centres end up using air NZ after driving to nearest supported airport anyway. I agree that this predatory/anti competitive behaviour needs to be stopped. But autonomous air-taxis are likely to fix it in 5-10 years, making small planes far more economic.

  If she has the influence claimed, why is she not taking a strong public stance against the bashing and murdering of babies and children?

  I’ve met gang members who are non-smoking (not that that’s particularly wonderful), teetotal, and certainly don’t bash their wives and children. The whole country probably grieved a little for Connor Morris of the Headhunters when he died or Millie Elder-Holmes.
  
  There are good and bad people in every group. They all have their own story.
  
  The one thing you can say about this particular predator is that he was raised by a family, taught at a school with all its attendant services, part of a culture with attendant services (including race, youth, etc.), possibly in a workplace, defended by lawyers, and sentenced by a judge.
  
  If he got the idea that it’s a good thing to beat, bloody, and break the women and children in his life, and to expect to do it with impunity, one group you can’t blame is the Mongrel Mob.
  
  Gang membership – and I thought he was aiming to be a ‘prospect’ so he would be just desperately ‘name-dropping’ – is a result, not a cause. Some of them are working to eradicate such a culture.

    Anne of Glen Eden: a few years ago I contributed to a Facebook blog/group purporting to support parents and in particular , rural parents.
    It was about a year after that little boy Moko had been murdered and it was suggested that as Mother’s Day was coming along, perhaps members of this group could take a stand against the shocking injuries leading to death that he had suffered at the hands of two adults, one of whom kicked the daylights out of this kid with steel capped boots.
    A few posters started to agree with the group putting their money where their mouths were and denouncing people who did this damage to children.
    But then the women associated with the gangs came on and shut that down very quickly. All posts were removed and no further discussion was allowed.
    The gang women said the men would come round and attack commenters if they found out who they were.
    These women were more interested in protecting their men than denouncing child abuse.
    Child abuse is as much a women’s issue as it is a man’s. They let it happen and then play the “poor me” card.

      You are so right. And it’s women who allow it to go on. In fact, historically and probably now, despite all the marketing of the women’s movement, far more children are abused by women than men because they’re usually the primary caregiver.
      
      Moko was killed as much by women as men, and particularly by the culture that ‘closed ranks’ and allowed it to go on. And still allow it to go on. Don’t tell me a bunch of the Maori Women’s Welfare League couldn’t take on a predator beating his kids. Trouble is, it’s their sons who are the predators.
      
      There is no point at which I’ve said gangs are ‘good’ things. Just understandable.
      
      Every single group in society has psychopaths. In fact, they are acknowledged to make very successful business people. Every group in society has criminals – and they all protect themselves with intimidation, closing ranks, and varying degrees of violence. I’ve met a few.
      
      The best response to abuse I’ve ever seen is a woman who waited until her abuser passed out and then took to him with a piece of 4×2. He was in hospital a long time. Now HE had time to think about his issues.
      
      But society? The basic reality is, the victims are supposed to be ‘civilised’, ‘mature’, people who respond ‘sensitively’ with ‘due process’ and ‘reasonable force’ – while someone is beating them to a pulp and gouging their eyes out.
      
      So nice that you wanted to ‘denounce’ the abusers but do you really expect that is a ‘protection’ from psychopaths – or that the inevitable victims shouldn’t act in their own best interests of safety?
      
      It’s like those who think individuals in Africa or the ME should just ‘stand up’ and ‘denounce’ those mean rulers who victimise people, refusing to accept that they, and probably all their relatives, would be socially annihilated, maimed and/or killed.
      
      We don’t protect the victims; we protect the rights of the perpetrator, as ‘civilised society’ ponders on the high points and philsophy of ‘law’ and ‘justice’. Anyone who literally fights back is prosecuted. Violence is now so epidemic, there isn’t the space to put them in jail. Where’s that going?

        It really is time we stopped pretending that NZers are a majority of ‘law-abiding and good citizens’. How about that cricket, eh? I was one of those at the Garden of Eden yesterday, and whilst the English batting was below par, the New Zealand bowling and fielding was simply brilliant. Williamson’s catch to dismiss Broad was as good a gully catch as I have ever seen, and the bonus is that even Blind Freddie can see the pink ball in flight.

It was an unforgettable day, and weather permitting, New Zealand’s dominance can continue today.

My enlightened and progressive management team at work returned last week from a “Dynamic Management Seminar” and the latest thing apparently in businesses is a Diversity and Inclusiveness Day with the centrepiece being a Diversity Tree where you can see the “Whakapapa” of your work colleagues.
The tree is a paper design stapled on the wall and everyone gets a leaf to put on it just like you would if you were back at kindergarten.
Anyway I was given a leaf and asked to fill in the questions which I initially refused to do on the simple basis it was bullshit but after being told I was not a team player and needed to more positive I was “asked” to fill it in again.
Yeah well two can play that game you bunch of wankers so I filled it in.
1.What is your whakapapa?.
Answer :Whitey
2.Describe what diversity and inclusiveness means to you in one or two words?
Answer: Circle Jerk.
Surprisingly my leaf seemed to have got lost as it never appeared on the tree for reasons which remain unexplained.
The other activity we also asked to participate in to celebrate the day was a shared lunch where we all bring an ethnic dish.
Well the local Coolie is not open at lunchtime and the Chinaman had a fire last week so what else is a man supposed to do besides get the KFC big bucket and bring that along.
Pretty ethnic anyway in my opinion, could have been worst as I gave the bananas a miss.

  Amazing, isn’t it? Still only 27. I never thought any NZ test cricketer would ever score the magic mark of 20 test centuries (Williamson is not there yet, but it won’t be long), 10,000 runs while also averaging 50 that used to be the benchmark of an absolute great,
  
  …but by the time he retires he will have torn up the record books. And he’s so compact, a purists delight. Plus, best of all, he’s not focused on records (seldom a healthy thing for the sake of a team, by batsmen anyway), but on performing for the team and letting the records take care of themselves.

There are a few on here who refer to National as “labour lite”. I have scoffed at this in the past but after seeing this piece I might have to review might opinion. Young going on about a low carbon economy shows he is in the wrong party or has been drinking Green/Labour “cool aid”

      It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out stigie but I wouldn’t book the scaffolders to erect the seating or arrange the catering yet. They’ll probably opt to sell the dump by tender to deny her the opportunity to grandstand at an auction.
      
      Then we’ll have to wait until the Court bailiffs move in to give her the boot & I don’t think we are going to be privy to their work schedule.
