Broadcaster Barry Soper has been banned from flying through the United States.

Soper, political editor for Newstalk ZB, was supposed to fly to London via Los Angeles on an Air New Zealand flight leaving Auckland on Friday night to report on Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s European trip.

Instead he was blocked from boarding when he arrived at Auckland International Airport.

Soper told the Herald On Sunday he did not realise he needed to apply for travel authorisation online as he would have spent only two hours in transit in Los Angeles.

Use humour
It could be argued that humour is relative, that what one person finds funny another person will find offensive. That argument is flawed, the truth is relative and offence is humour and relativity is flawed.

With all that explained the use of humour, particularly self depreciating humour goes along way with kiwis, poking fun at actions is OK, never people themselves.     Many people did want to try to make it a better place. However it is very hard to do so if affirmative action prevents you from occupying a role where you can help.
    
    My sister is a nurse with post grad training in HIV/AIDS. On top of that, she is also fluent in Xhosa and Zulu. She had moved to Ireland but then moved back to South Africa to “chip in”.
    
    A person with AIDS training, in the AIDS capital of the world. You would think that she would be in demand.
    
    It took her about 5 years to get employed where her skills could be useful due to having the wrong colour skin.
    
    A doctor I know since first grade (also AIDS specialisation) had the same problem. Last I head she could not get any employment in South Africa and was looking at heading to Los Angeles to work in a clinic for gay AIDS sufferers.

Swimming, ballet and art teachers may have to dream up another title – or risk getting slapped with a $2000 fine.

A bill that will control who gets to be called teacher is before a select committee.

If it is passed into law, using the word teacher without a teaching degree would be punishable with a $2000 fine.

The intent of the Education (Protecting Teacher Title) Amendment Bill is to lift the status of teachers by stopping those who have not gained recognised teaching qualifications from using that title.

Those who aren’t qualified could use titles like mentor, lecturer, tutor or educator.

National education spokeswoman Nikki Kaye said the bill jeopardised many current teachers and early childhood teachers whose current qualifications and experiences fall outside of the criteria. She said it would affect thousands of people.

Submissions for the bill, fronted by New Zealand First MP Jenny Marcroft, closed on Friday.

        Not all of my instances of speaking out have ended so positively. In fact, my experience of the legal profession is that its most senior members would prefer women to remain silent.

        Perhaps Andrew could unshackle Lawyers and allow them to have other associations as well.

    meh – Doctor is an academic/clergy title. It comes from the latin word “docere”, to teach. When the medical profession stopped bleeding people in barbers’ shops and got some academic respectability, they adopted the title as well.   Teachers with recognised teaching qualifications are already identified by the “registered teachers ” listing. Problem is they – the teachers – have to pay annually to stay listed. Better that it was treated as part of the administration of the education system and they were listed freely.

    Probably, JIV. This all points to the fact that the banning of Charter Schools is a Union driven project and that “teaching”will be the exclusive domain of academics with no life experience. Qualification and union membership will be the only criteria to be eligible to teach. The ability to impart, wisdom learning and life skills will not come into it.

      It just occurred to me that given the nice Mr Little’s decision to reduce prison numbers, it would create employment for the equally nice Mr Davis who seems to have nothing to do nowadays and who would be in charge of an immediately available workforce. They can be billeted in ministerial houses while the ministers are all on their ministerial junkets.
      
      I don’t think the transparency minister will be on the working group. She has difficulty understanding the meaning of the word “meeting”and I fear will get lost on receipt of the agenda.
      She also seems to have trouble recalling what it said in one-to-one encounters and would become thoroughly confused if there were eight in the room.

        They want to reduce inmates by 30% but there is a call for sex offenders to be kept on prison grounds after their sentence.
        Now as much as I believe in castration for sex offenders and the reintroduction of the death penalty.

  A Penny saved is not a penny earned if at the end of the day you still owe a quarter.
  
  Anyone who has followed the decade long saga of her not paying rates, knows Penny owes at least $35,000 but the appeal asks for $21,000 ($20,000 to Penny, and $1,000 Givealittle fee) and gives no explanation for the difference.
  Ironically the whole deal seems to lack a little integrity and transparency.
  
  Someone called Hawera Trust has donated $600.00 a day ago and $500.00 two days ago, so $1,100 altogether, or 28% of the current total. Which is a factor anyone considering donating should note, in guessing whether the amount Penny seeks will be realised by April 20 or not.
  
  And, nearly $4000 in 5 days, only 17,000 to go in 5 days
  There seems to be nothing to indicate what happens if the target is missed. If the sale goes ahead, is any amount less than $20,000 just a happy bonus to go with what the High court passes back to Penny, after the Auckland Council receives what it is owed?

This highly magnified photo was taken from the Southern marker-boulder and shows the outlying standing stone from whence the Solstice sunset is seen to occur at the Southern Manukau Heads. The degree angle from the Southern-marker and across this outlying standing stone would closely approximate the Southern-most lunar-set position at the time of Lunar Major Standstill. This is the most extreme Southern position the Moon moves to in its 18.613-year cycle. The outlying standing stone appears to have the remnants of an ancient “bullaun” bowl carved into its base-rock and this still captures some water during rainfalls. Bullauns are found all over Ireland and are a very ancient cultural expression. They are also found to be laboriously carved into boulders all over New Zealand.

(1) The Solstice sunset alighting spot.

(2) A prominent “V” cleft situated at 243-degrees azimuth from the Southern marker boulder.

(3) The “V” formed by the declining sides of the Northern & Southern edges of Manukau Heads situated at 243.25-degrees azimuth.

Numerical progressions based upon this very important ancient lunar and navigational value 243 were built into the weights, measures and volumes of the ancient Mediterranean nations.

Like many other Auckland KBers I headed off to my local DIY chain store and upgraded my emergency lighting gear on Wednesday morning once I became aware that the power would be out of action for a couple of days. I purchased a couple of LED lanterns for $40 each and they do the job really well – no complaints at all about their effectiveness. My daughter took the smile off my face somewhat when she showed me the identical brand and product on her regular China based online store at $14.25 each. I’ve since ordered another five (one each for the bedrooms and cars) from China and cheerfully paid the $9 postage.

How can this be? I get the 15% GST but what I don’t get is that the local DIY chain store and its hundreds of outlets in Australia and NZ will be purchasing this item at way less than I paid and they are retailing it to Kiwis customers for $40!! No wonder we are sceptical about the demands by NZ retailers for GST to be applied to goods purchased online. They need all the help they can get. Greedy bastards.

    I’ve told this story before on KB, but I’ll do so again. When we lost that game in 1953, it was as when the Lions lost the 4th test of 1977, or that quarter final we lost against the French in Cardiff in 2007 – the team that had dominated over 80% of the territory and possession somehow managed to lose as a result of just failing to score the crucial points (Sean Fitzpatrick’s dad, Brian was held up on the li, as was Laurie Haig), a suspect referee call (Bill Clark was penalised for playing the ball off his feet in a ruck when trying to extract himself from it) and an unlucky bounce (a kick-and-hope Clem Thomas cross-kick in the last few minutes bounced into the arms of Welsh sprinter Ken Jones, whereas if it had bounced he other way, All Black wing Ron Jarden would have scored at the other end).
    
    Anyway, after the game the great All Black (and Ponsonby, not Petone! ?) fullback Bob Scott was sitting in tears in the changing room. But as when he missed the kicks at goal in South Africa in 1949, he was not crying because he couldn’t take a loss, but because he was such a perfectionist and so competitive, it was out of sheer frustration at losing a game that should have been won easily.
    
    Anyway, into the changing room strides the recently-retired Governor General of New Zealand, and Scott’s C-in-C from the 2nd NZEF, General Sir Bernard Freyberg. “Tiny” takes one look at Scott and tries to comfort him, “there, there, fellow. I’ve lost battles, had men under my command killed in their hundreds. It’s just a game”. And like a good former soldier, Scott choked back his tears and replied, “yes, sir. Thank you, sir”
    
    …but under his breath he muttered, “…but you never lost to bloody Wales!” ?

Interesting comment on State TV’s channel 1 news tonight.

Commenting on the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s finding New Zealand, a female Maori activist was the lead commentator. She said Captain Cook was “syphilitic”.

When Westerners met isolated peoples, they of course introduced diseases. But it used to be argued that sailors brought syphilis back from South America in the days of the Spanish conquests.

Regardless, is there any suggestion that Cook himself had syphilis as the Maori woman asserted?

TVNZ, in its usual Sunday-Leftist stance, took the tone of denigrating Cook and his arrival at NZ on his first exploration voyage to this part of the world.

  I can’t recall but it certainly wasn’t Black Sticks women’s captain Stacey Michelsen who will be flag bearer for the New Zealand team at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
  
  I see you actually didn’t predict who *would* be chosen, just that it wouldn’t be one particular (injured) competitor.
  
  Edit: Just thinking about the choice – the Black Sticks keeper used to be Helen Clark (not H1 though); now had she still been playing and been chosen it would really have been hilarious.

The role of Speaker has an important constitutional position in our democracy.
The current speaker, Trevor Mallard, is making a mockery of that role both in and out of Parliament.
Recently the Airport flyer between the Hutt and Wgton airport was scheduled to be closed by the service owners.
Representations by Chris Bishop and Ginny Anderson appear to have overturned that decision.
Our impartial speaker, tweeting under his ‘SpeakerTrevor’ moniker, tweeted congratulations to Anderson and (counsellor) Barry.
He was unable to bring himself to recognise Bishop’s role.
I can’t think of any speaker in the last 50 years to openly display such a spiteful, partisan attitude.
