Utah High Schoolers Convinced State Lawmakers to Admit Climate Change Is Real

Utah’s state lawmakers aren’t exactly friendly to climate change legislation. In 2010, the state legislature overwhelmingly passed a resolution that implied global warming is a conspiracy and urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to stop all carbon dioxide reduction policies and programs.

But thanks to a group of fearless high schoolers, Gov. Gary Herbert reversed the 2010 measure this past March, with the support of 75 percent of Republican legislators.

“We, as youth leaders of Utah, have assembled with you, our state leaders, to address what we consider to be the paramount issue of our generation—that of a changing climate,” one student said.

During the 2018 legislative general session, after impassioned testimony from the students, the bill gained traction. It made it out of committee by an 8-2 vote, Green wrote, “then, at last, came success as the House passed the resolution 51-21 and the Senate 23-3.”

Those opposed to the bill included Rep. Mike Noel. As quoted by The Salt Lake Tribute, Noel told the students: “This whole issue of climate change has been used by organizations to fool people.”

The Utah Legislature, however, was no fool.

Good article on property prices from Owen Vaughan, the Herald’s housing editor.

New Zealanders deserve a better answer than “let’s burn the house down”.

He is correct when he says adding costs – real, or perceived future costs – to property investor means higher rents and some rental property owners leaving the market. Unleashing the beast, he suggests. What will the fiscal impact of that be if demand increases dramatically for emergency and social housing? Not minuscule, that’s for sure.

(He is not correct to say that the tax working group is likely to recommend the ring fencing of tax losses for property investors – that policy has already been announced and will start in 2019.)

Who wants property prices to fall? In New Zealand there have been plenty of commentators, politicians and economists who have argued long and hard that New Zealand’s property market is grossly inflated and needs puncturing.

Certainly, it’s an argument that finds favour among those who are struggling to get a foot on the property ladder – why wouldn’t it? – but it’s an argument that is often rooted in the politics of grievance and is a risky card to play – just look at Brexit and Trump to see what unleashing the beast can lead to.

I might go along to one of Simon Bridges’ public appearances

Would be good to ask him if, in the case of a 2020 win –

– Closed charter schools will be reopened & continued
– Three strikes law will be reinstated (most likely will be removed soon)
– Compulsory Maori in schools will become not compulsory (if implemented before 2020)
– Oil and gas permits will be revived to pre-CoL standard
– The mega prison will be built (if it’s mothballed)
– Parole conditions returned to pre- CoL standard (if relaxed)
– The Akl – Whg four laner will be built
– If we’ll get those tax cuts or if we have to wait another nine years lol
– The substantial monies to the Pacific will be reduced to pre-CoL standard
– The petrol tax will be rescinded
– We will go all out to get back on side with the US & Australia
– We will rescind Maori part ownership of water (if implemented by 2020)
– We will take agriculture out of the ETS (if implemented by 2020)
– We will get back into Five Eyes (if we are kicked out)
– MSD will be forced to return to pre-Sepuloni largesse
– The Value Capture Tax or indeed any new taxes or ‘levies’ will be scrapped
– Industrial relations will be returned to pre CoL standard

And finally if

– He expects us to believe he will do any of the above.

For good reason I have diminishing faith National won’t pull a sickie on at least 50% of the destruction the Marxists are going to unleash

I know National are not going to go any further right than they were under Key but it would be reassuring to know they are not going to be led by the nose even further left like a big dumb Charolais because it’s too hard.

Labour wins long term because they pile on the goodies, the punters get used to them, Nats too scared to reverse them, just go find more money to pay for it. Not a solution.

I think the answer to NZ’s drift left will be remedied by Trump, not any supposedly right wing politician we have currently

      Man, it was depressing. When I first tuned in I thought ‘sounds like Taxinda’. Then realised it was a different woman, but still assumed ‘Labour’ by the endless virtue signalling. Then she got onto criticising Labour for not going far enough. Until we have clarity on whether National will be measuring real poverty or lowish income ‘poverdee’ (i.e. inequality), it’s hard to know what they really support.

    In my younger (when I was fitter and better looking) days I went out with a wannabe ‘Actress’ for a while.
    She was on one of NZ’s first Reality TV shows and she was freaking desperate to be famous.
    Her whole life revolved around famous people she had met, famous people she had shagged, what parties she got invited to, and (most disturbingly) millionaires who bought her mysterious ‘presents’..
    She was basically a high class hooker- Her whole life (and her ‘friends’ who surrounded her) was absolutely fake. As such I have a pretty low opinion of the ‘Fame Whore’/Reality TV kind of person..
    
    *I reconnected with her on Facebook a while back and she seems to have landed herself an extremely wealthy sugar daddy…Guess it worked out for her in the end but Jesus what a price to pay..

Claims that six million Jews in Europe were suffering to such a degree that millions had died already, while many more millions would face a lingering death, climaxed for the first time during fundraising campaign that started during the FIRST World War and reached its peak in the early and mid-1920s. The “New York Times” was the main vehicle for such propaganda, which also included well-known buzzwords such as “annihilation,” “extermination” and even the term “holocaust.”

  There is more evidence of the persecution and murder of Jews by Nazi Germany than there is for any other event in modern history. The evidence comes from records recovered from the Nazis, testimony by the survivors, allies, and the criminals themselves.
  The figure of 6 million is the best available estimate of the number murdered. Given that the Nazis purposely did not keep comprehensive records of their actions in this regard, and the absence of comprehensive census data in the occupied countries as to the number of Jews it is impossible for us to determine precise numbers, but the Nazis themselves arrived at a number of over 5 million some months before the end of the war.
  Not to accept the murder of European Jewry is factual suggests to me that you have lost touch with both truth itself and reality. To suggest that this persecution is a fiction used to manipulate public opinion is a cheap shot (to say the least), and totally unworthy of respect in the circumstances.
  Similar comments could be made about the reality of other Eastern European persecution of Jews before WW2.

    I just thought it noteworthy that up came the magic 6 million number again like it has been since the 1800’s.

      The trouble is mate that I don’t think you are open to reason on this subject.
      As I suggest there is overwhelming proof of this crime from all available records and testimony. Books could be written to refute the nonsense you have embraced, all the way from Hitlers Mein Kampf to the Nuremberg trials and beyond. The evidence is simply conclusive, and nothing you have said in anyway refutes it. For example (only a relatively minor one): If there was no plan to exterminate the Jews explain Himmler’s address to the assembled SS and political leaders at Posen in October 1943. Explain Adolf Eichmann’s testimony at Jerusalem prior to and during his trial in the early 1960s – or Rudolf Hoess’s testimony (among others) at Nuremberg.
      As I said books could be written to refute your position but I doubt you would even consider those arguments. You are in thrall to a worldview that makes black white and vice versa. There is actually no reasoning with you IMO.

Thanks to having a Labour-led gang of fools at the helm I notice that “envy creep” is alive and well. The stick it to the “rich pricks” through taxation is afoot and this morning there was a graphic exposition of it on Newstalk. At 6am the news led with the fact that $18,000,000 had been won at Lotto on a ticket bought in the “affluent, leafy suburb of Remuera.” Now if the ticket had been bought in Mangere the headline would’ve been “we hope the money has been won by those poor people there who really need it.” I surmise that the winner in Remuera has more than equal odds of turning $18,000,000 in to $100,000,000 rather than pissing it in a casino somewhere!

  Realistically, an already well off winner in Remuera can be just as charitable with this wonderful prize as any other winner. In fact, they are probably more likely to help vulnerable groups using methods that actually get them out of poverty than simply encourage more addiction to welfare.

Has anyone else had the impact of the about-to-be implemented European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (effective from 25 May) brought to their attention? I discovered it when a popular maritime forum I have followed for years stopped operating with the following message:

“We are currently evaluating whether we have the resources to continue this forum after GDPR is enacted on 25th May 2018.
While we hope to continue, the expense and risks are probably too great to provide a live forum. We hope to at least provide an archive of what was over a decade worth of posts and photos as a static website.”

It looks like this draconian EU dictate will have many unintended or unexpected consequences. The reach of the rule is pervasive: “This means that any company, anywhere, that has a database that includes EU citizens is bound by its rules. Businesses of all sizes are affected-from micro to multinational.No one is exempt.”

Just as many ‘homeless’ people will be living in state-funded motels.
* There’s the financing of the ‘favoured’ groups with the requisite image like ‘Women’s Refuge’ who might do stuff for abused adults (most particularly, ‘women’), at least temporarily, but very little for the most necessary group, abused children and nothing to stop the generational progression.
*Billions poured into advisory groups and consultants – now also to overseas interests to suit Winston Peters.
* University students with free education who, by comparison, really don’t need it as much as others need food, shelter, and medical treatment – but those students are narcissistic voters with a chip on their shoulder.
*Promiscuity needs a boost as well, with increasing diseases and unwanted conceptions which require more abortions in ‘health care’ to facilitate all the ‘right’ lifestyles.
*While the elderly are literally left to rot to death, tied to beds with maggots in their wounds, lying in faeces and more children are abused to death by monsters.

The truth is, Labour were always liars, experts at marketing spin and feeding people’s worst weaknesses, and those who voted for them were naïve and gullible, following the Pied Piper into the hole in the mountain. The costs of those broken promises will impact most heavily on the less well-off – those they claimed to be championing. And those costs are escalating, not least the price of oil/fuel.

They always make the same types of promises and they always break them, always for the same reasons – ‘It’s worse than we thought’, ‘We never meant it would be done in one term’, ‘It will take ten years (when they’re not in government, so never)’, ‘It’s all the previous government’s fault’, ‘We need an inquiry’. You could have made a video tape several decades ago and just replay it after every election.

It was just empty lies and wishful thinking, a mixed fairy-tale with the requisite ‘Princess’ and her ‘frog’, and an adoring public exclaiming at their wondrous and non-existent ‘wardrobe’.

The bombshell reported yesterday in the Wall Street Journal that you probably haven’t heard about is that the Obama Administration may have planted an FBI mole into Trump’s campaign.

The bureau already has some explaining to do. Thanks to the Washington Post’s unnamed law-enforcement leakers, we know Mr. Nunes’s request deals with a “top secret intelligence source” of the FBI and CIA, who is a U.S. citizen and who was involved in the Russia collusion probe. When government agencies refer to sources, they mean people who appear to be average citizens but use their profession or contacts to spy for the agency. Ergo, we might take this to mean that the FBI secretly had a person on the payroll who used his or her non-FBI credentials to interact in some capacity with the Trump campaign.

This would amount to spying, and it is hugely disconcerting. It would also be a major escalation from the electronic surveillance we already knew about, which was bad enough. Still, the players in this affair—the FBI, former Director Jim Comey, the Steele dossier authors—have been suspiciously vague on the key moments leading up to that launch date. When precisely was the Steele dossier delivered to the FBI? When precisely did the Papadopoulos information come in?

And to the point, when precisely was this human source operating? Because if it was prior to that infamous Papadopoulos tip, then the FBI isn’t being straight. It would mean the bureau was spying on the Trump campaign prior to that moment. And that in turn would mean that the FBI had been spurred to act on the basis of something other than a junior campaign aide’s loose lips.

It has to be the world’s most gullible group hearing a country’s deportation appeals.

The man granted asylum must have got his story out of James Bond:

He told the Tribunal of a decades-long cat-and-mouse game with Russian authorities which he claimed started in 1991 when dating his future wife, a Bulgarian, who was the daughter of a KGB agent.

His mother-in-law passed secret information to him as an insurance policy in case the KGB decided to kill her, he said.

When the tribunal member quoted, Louise Moor, was appointed in 2010, Minister Simon Power described her as “most recently a researcher and legal adviser in the Refugee and Migrants’ Rights team at Amnesty International based in London.”

From Amnesty – bloody Amnesty! – to deciding who is a legitimate immigrant in NZ. Who recommended that appointment?

“Workers should also get a say on proposed changes to rules on workplace wear, guidance by the Government Equalities Office will say this month. It is also expected to clearly set out what companies can and cannot tell their staff.”

    Nor does it mean there aren’t. I know people (men and women) who have been raped but didn’t even go to the police as it would be so difficult to prove (especially when there was a ‘relationship’), or was a long time ago. They would have had *absolutely no* reason to lie.
    
    Rape in all but the most violent stranger-rape situations is extremely hard to prove. Imagine being raped yourself, but held down or threatened into not getting fighting injuries. If the perp. said ‘but Longknives asked for sex and enjoyed it. Just bitter because our relationship is over’, do you think the Police would consider that could be proven in court?

  His offering didn’t start well as he said:
  “The evidence is very, very strong from around the world that where industries have high union density, where people are covered by collective agreements, their wages rise much faster than the rate of inflation,” said Mr Lees-Galloway. If he wasn’t such a threat to the true hard working Kiwi’s that constitute the bulk of our productivity it would be laughable.

    I’m utterly disgusted by the girl guides board banning these beloved biscuits. Their reasons are nothing more than shallow, unbelievable excuses. I guess they’ve been got at by the anti-sugar brigade. Next the girl guides will have to set up sausage sizzles just like the boy scouts. The $900,000 dollars funding they are turning away will have to come from somewhere. But wait….there’s fat and salt in sausages…oh dear, what WILL they do!!!??

Other lawyers (including Alex Masterley) and I will be interested to see how Downs J applies the legal tests for an injunction.

I imagine the argument will proceed as follows:
– Penny (as the applicant) will say she needs an injunction as she wants to challenge “the processes and procedures that led to CEO Stephen Town initiating this forced rating sale of [her] freehold home” (directly quoting Penny).
– Auckland Council (as the respondent) will say her judicial review claim is meritless.

As I’ve noted before, section 74 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 states: “A rating sale … made under this Act is valid for all purposes, even if there has been an irregularity in the conduct of the sale …” and “No purchaser … is obliged to inquire whether the sale … was properly conducted”. So Penny has to successfully challenge the pre-sale process, which brings us back to Auckland Council’s compliance with the pre-sale procedure set out in the Local Government (Rating) Act. That procedure isn’t complicated. If Auckland Council hasn’t complied, in circumstances where Penny’s challenge was inevitable, then their legal team should be sacked.

        I’d go along with that. If bullshit was rubber she would bounce off the moon.
        
        BUT if she produced verifiable evidence from a medical specialist to the effect that her illness was terminal then it wouldn’t be unreasonable for the sale to be cancelled. The Council are a protected creditor & should show mercy but not be conned.

        I am prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt here. If it’s advanced ovarian cancer she may have as little as 6 months to live, especially if it has triggered secondary cancers. A good friend of mine died from this within 6 months after the diagnosis. The rates war with the council should not be her number one priority and the council should sort out the financials with her estate.

So Lees Galloway thinks that any business that can’t cope with minimum wage increases, of the size they are advocating as well as the pro union and tax compliance laws, should basically “get out”.

Your own govt. figures show that most companies that employ or (like me) are sole traders looking to expand. 100’s of thousands of employees could be hired is just half of the business’ with less than 5 employees took on just ONE person more.
Personally, I sit and calculate when I can take on someone to replace the physical work in my business, so I can expand into more areas and take on bigger contracts, bigger projects etc ie expand my business further.
With these increases in compliance, costs, wages etc you have moved that time for employing out from possibly 6 months to 2 years.

Musk’s “Boring Company” with $113million money raised, have (aside from all their R&D activities) in less than 2 years since inception almost completed a 3km long tunnel under Los Angeles, and will start to offer rides in a few months to pedestrians, cyclists and cars on electric ‘skates’ that are eventually expected to go up to 200km/hr.

Seems like a much better way forward for all those public transport zealots fucking up our cities roads with their ‘visions’ and spending vast sums of money on Mauseleums to wishful thinking.
