  That guy is dreaming. As long as a community keeps growing the value of existing houses is driven by the cost of new builds. Clobbering evil land bankers will not solve the problem since their cut would be perhaps 5% of the cost of a new build.
  And ‘Nimbyism’ is alive and well, David Seymour and a few Epsom stirrers do not want social housing in Epsom, could attract people with mental health issues. Nimbyists are potentially a significant political force – just witness that both Peter Dunne and Winston Peters sided with the Nimbyists to stop RMA changes proposed by the previous government to make housing development easier.

Sounds to many people that Mallard has caught the Peters disease as a “Hallucinating” verbal shin kicker.
Mallard has been exposed as a complete incompetent inept inane so called Parliamentary “Speaker”. Seems when the effeminate Hipkins and the Oxfam reject Twyford were sneering at Judith Collins and talking botox about her .Bully boy Mallard who once referred to a National Party MP and called him “Tinkerbell” seemed to not hear that type of abuse and sexism from two of his own Party’s clowns.
Yet it is now starting to appear that Mallard is Hallucinating and hearing voices that no one else has heard.
Just to revisit the comments Mallard alleged he heard .The finger of suspicion is pointing at Mallard himself.Yes not a good look.
“Stupid little Girl” regarding Peters selected PM Ardern,think that is the type of comment Mallard would make,ala his homophobic comments about a National Party MP,when he called him “Tinkerbell”.

  As much as I would like to think Mallard dreamt up the comment, I’m fairly sure it was said (I don’t really care if it was said). National denied it at the time and since no video or audio evidence has surfaced they got away with it and has given National a stick to beat both Labour and Mallard with. It’s quite clever politicking really. Mallard confirming this with reporter has only enlarged the stick. What is certain is Nationals political strategist/s are far more politically mature/savvy than Labour’s ever will be.

Geez, I love the new definition of affordable housing. $500,000 for a 1 bedroom box in Manukau. This is Auckland Councils effort to build 300 dwellings in Manukau, which they might sell to Twitford, to help him reach his 100,000 target.

I got called up to present my submission to select committee on the Employment Relations Amendment Bill. There were three other phone submissions while I was there. One from an English accent that was a unionist and two other calls from American accents in Education and both supporting the Bill.
I came up and presented my side which was that industry wide contracts, widespread collective bargaining and loss of flexibility for business will cost jobs/hours, reduce investment in business and will impede the ability to achieve 2.9% growth per annum as forecasted in the budget. There is increasing operational and compliance cost involved in business and more pressure is going to be put on the bottom line making some business investment very questionable. Some people have no understanding of how hard it can be to be an employer these days. They also don’t realise we operate in a global market for labour and trade. We are trying to add value to New Zealand’s economy and provide employment (often to unskilled workers) but they want to make it harder.
I will be watching the unemployment figures, net migration and GDP closely in the next couple of years after this Bill is passed.

  The 1970’s ideals of the unions are already starting to surface with worrying frequency. I don’t think I have seen as much industrial action in the last 10 years than I have seen in the last few months. Just yesterday, union members working at a cinema chain deliberately stirring the shit on the release day of a popular motion picture. Labour’s union masters already calling the tune. It’s only the start. Yesterday a note from my daughters school that there will be a half day next month because all the teachers will be attending a union meeting….

Saw a new NZBus electric bus on the road in Wellington yesterday. Marked not in service so I guess it is being tested.

This was in Karori which might indicate it is designed for the #3 route, which is a long cross town route, mainly flat, very well used.

Better option for Auckland than light rail to the airport?

  There have been problems with the recent batch of electric buses. Auckland is meant to be trailing 2 electric buses, they lasted 1 day & then there were electricity problems.
  Auckland’s buses came from China, the issue until it is resolved is that they can’t be recharged in compliance with NZ/Aust electricity standards, a standard that is soon to be adopted by the Europeans, which is safer than the Chinese standard. Anyhow Chinese engineers are meant to have been on their way out here to resolve the issue.
  
  When the buses arrived & were charged at the ADL workshop in Albany, there was no problem, the problem was found at the NZ Bus garage in Auck city. The process of charging blew the circuits at the NZ Bus depot. The issue was identified as the charging system not being compliant.
  
  In Auckland, the buses are meant to have been used for the past 3 weeks on the City Link route, but because of the electricity problems they are still in NZ Bus’ depot in Halsey St.
  
  The best bit is that Goofy has signed Auckland up to converting its bus fleet to electric by 2040 (only 1300 buses).

    When are they going to learn going to learn if they want an electric bus or car to perform as before they have to put in at least as much energy into the battery as diesel/petrol supplied. The carbon based energy packaging is much more efficient.
    
    Supplying massive quantities of electricity for storage in small containers is both expensive and dangerous. High current flows are required to pack the energy in in a reasonable time–batteries are a little sensitive about that. Explode like SJW’s easily.
    
    How can the public be assured of the battery safety? Musk is having problems with it.

      Kev, you are right. As I pointed out above, Goofy has signed Auckland to converting its entire fleet of buses to electric. That presupposes we have an electricity system can support adding the charging of 1300 buses, in addition to Twitford’s 2 tram sets. Auckland doesn’t.
      
      As was shown in the storms 6 weeks ago, NZ’s urban electricity systems are flakey at best. Add to that the spikes in consumption caused by electric transport vehicles and we could all end up in the dark.
      
      Wayne was right yesterday when he highlighted some of the poor assumptions and maths in work done by the likes of Mr D. Cunliffe & his colleagues.

I am following the whole future energy needs for NZ issue.
Yesterday in QT we had this exchange at the end of Q9 from Jonathan Young :

“Jonathan Young: What is her response to Transpower’s advice that New Zealand will need to more than double its electricity generation by 2050—the equivalent of 22 more Clyde Dams—and their caution that this represents a concentration of risk because substantially growing demand being met by increasingly intermittent energy sources is a concern?

Hon Dr MEGAN WOODS: My response to that is that is exactly why this Government has started doing the necessary work to plan for that transition and that increase in capacity that will be required. It is precisely the reason why the transition to 100 percent renewable electricity is one of the first two tasks that the interim independent Climate Commission has started charting out the pathway on.

Hon James Shaw: Has New Zealand ever doubled its electricity generation in its history, and does she have faith in the electricity markets to be able to do that?

Hon Dr MEGAN WOODS: Yes.”

A couple of observations : Woods is completely out of her depth with her portfolio as shown with these answers.
Why did Shaw effectively drop her in it with his question or is he just stupid as well?

NB. Young bringing up the problem TransPower see with intermittent energy sources (wind & solar) is very valid as seen in West Australia where they are having huge problems with their grid.

    The salient point of that is – it’s all in the past; and so far in the past that it’s been forgotten. What he’s talking about is no longer real. More to the point, it’s never been real for Taika Waititi who never experienced any of it. It’s interesting that Te Ara records “All Māori men were able to vote from 1867 and all European men from 1879.” – so they were entitled to vote 12 years before Europeans.
    
    I know that I was raised that everyone should be ‘equal’. Maori and their culture, in particular, were experienced, respected, and valued. As a child, I was entirely proficient in Maori waiata, poi, stick games, mythology, ritual, and spoke in pidgin Maori.
    
    From early adulthood, that was ‘beaten’ out of me as I was harangued by society that I had no part in that culture. Some of that ‘beating’ involved ‘formal warnings’ in work settings. I could not refer to it, talk about it, or participate in it – certainly not in the presence of Maori, without specific permission, only on the basis that I was perpetually and utterly inadequate and incompetent, and only if I acknowledged that NZ is not my country, I didn’t ‘belong’ here, and was and would ever be only a ‘guest’. Of course, that view still prevails – in terms of the majority of the population living in a distorted apartheid-like pseudo-democracy; but at the same time, we’re also all supposed to ‘embrace’ Maori culture, especially te reo, and its ownership of all official proceedings. In the meantime, their social problems have deteriorated and proliferated with no improvement in sight – and they’re committed to maintaining them to justify their perennial demands.
    
    While in theory, I remain committed to all human beings more alike than different with regard to all being ‘deeply flawed’, all having the same potential, and all deserving of the same dignity and respect – and I practice that in my personal contacts – I now have forgotten everything I once knew about Maori culture, have no desire for reacquaintance (my early experiences remaining my own valued ‘treasure’), and ‘know’ that Maori are in whatever positions they’re in only because they’re Maori – not because they’re able, skilled, intelligent, or effective. They’re given awards, money, power, position, and jobs just because they’re Maori – in everything.
    
    They derive a really perverse enjoyment from tyrannously forcing the population to ‘embrace’ a culture in which that population will perpetually remain ‘unentitled’ to any contribution and completely disenfranchised – something that was never done to Maori. Not only that, but they’re ‘proud’ of doing it and contemptuous of the people and systems which empower them to do it, especially the gullible ‘guilt-tripped’ taxpayers who finance it – something I have seen and heard personally on multiple occasions over decades. And, as I say, they have made it a profession to create and maintain generations of hostile ‘victims’ as a rationale to justify it which is hardly convincing of their ‘superiority’. What they are good at is pretending to be ‘harmless’ so they can get close enough access to cut your throat.

  The difficulty I have with this growing ‘debate’ is – what is a Maori? If I have 25% maori in me, can I claim the right to a moko or other tribal privilege? What about the report a day or so ago claiming that Maori suffer more harm at work and in the environment than non-Maori? So how much maori blood do I need to fit that criteria? If ANY maori blood qualifies me, how am I more at risk than the larger part of me that is english/french/irish/pakistani/greek, etc? Worse, if my maori self is based on my feelings, rather than bloodline.
  If we are going to continue down this line of argument there will be a need to establish a clear definition of what is a maori, otherwise we will all end up claiming maori-targetted benefits.

    Closely aligned: who are Maori? There is oral tradition of the arrival of several “canoes” here at different places and times.
    
    Hawaiiki is a large territorial area and not defined. Oral tradition separates them from being one. They are bound by the common myths and language similarities. These vary from island to island. Their differences meant there was no nation, it was each tribal canoe for itself. Rules demanded conquest and revenge; mana both demanded and was enhanced by it. Some of this is preserved in their tribal stories and art. Others are reposed in tribal lore entrusted to elders. That’s the problem of moko being appropriated by a pakeha woman. She can have no understanding of the significance that may be attached to a tribal design or fragment.
    
    Claims to rights are getting out of hand. We prevented musket-war genocide by agreeing to live peacefully among them. Adequate compensation has already been made for lands acquired. Internal tribal disputes are not ours to settle with even more cash.
    
    Health and other issues are ethnic. Our Maori population share the same problems as other Polynesians. It may be that Polynesia as a whole has gone “troppo” and this is reflected genetically. There is a natural slowing down to adjust to the equatorial climate. This puts that ethnic group as having measured typical performance expectations as in the bottom third of the pakeha population. That difference shows up in schooling, work, health, benefits, prisons. There is an enormous social cost which translated into budget terms means we are paying a continuing high compensation package without any Treaty issues.

        KevOB has not posited that Maori/Early Polynesians arrived here before or after 1280-1300AD.
        
        He is arguing that today’s Maori have different origin stories.
        We know of at least 20 very early settlement sites along the East Coast of the North Island stretching from Houhora (Northland) to the Otago Peninsula.
        It is improbable that all these sites were developed in a short time period from the occupants and their immediate descendants of a single canoe.
        
        Much more likely is that a number of canoes arrived (at different locations) in NZ from Islands in East Polynesia (Cooks, Society, Austral Islands) over a time period of 100-200 years.
        
        Based on population estimates there would have had to be at least 3 – 4 canoe arrivals (at least 70-100 females).

I endorse Mark Mitchell’s comments on RNZ about the referendum on legalisation of Marijuana. Rushing this process and not allowing full debate for the only reason that the Coalition Government doesn’t want the risk of this at election time is clearly wrong. He also raised the issue of cost.
I note that Jacinda is trying to side step this morning and saying that the Government may not implement the result. Her Government is the driving this referendum so she can’t have it both ways.

    My youngest, special baby has beautiful but unusually sharp teeth, which used to draw blood when he was 18 months old.

      I think in 6 years of breast-feeding I only ever got one bite. The eldest weaned herself somewhere around the 2 year-old mark and iIrc it was around then that she that tried to nibble the nipple.

  This is why the fucktards in the DNC are spreading the word that their operatives in the media have to stop talking about impeachment (because it’s turning the voters off).       Well, for those following the whole saga, two new scraps of info.
      
      First, a little while back in an essentially unnoticed announcement, an unnamed DNC official admitted that the Trump Opposition research document which was much analysed and used as the basis for the claims that the Russians hacked the DNC server, actually came from an email taken from John Podesta’s email. Guccifer2 claimed to be the hacker and to have obtained the document from the DNC, turns out it wasn’t. So all the Russian metadata in that file, so carefully analysed, looks more and more like a deliberate red herring. If that document did come from Podesta’s email (which was accessed via a very standard phishing scam) then Guccifer2 was lying. Another reason to believe the Guccifer2 was a fake, a CrowdStrike setup, designed to further the narrative.
      
      Second interesting item. Joseph Mifsud, the professor who by the standard narrative story is a Russian agent of influence who was communicating with Papadopoulos, well after he was doing his thing with Papadopoulos and holding out the prospect of Hilary Clinton’s emails (note, not the DNC or Podesta ones) he spent some time hobnobbing with a number of senior British, Italian, and EU officials at a variety of locations. He also has long standing and significant links with the Italian intelligence organisation.
      
      Since he was identified as a Russian agent of influence, it does seem extremely odd that he was “allowed”to have so much contact with government officials and politicians. Surely the various western intelligence services should have been warning these people of his nefarious alleged status.
      
      Of course, if he really was an intelligence plant dragged in to “honeypot” Papadopolous then his late contacts (and his known existing contacts with Italian intelligence) is much more easily explained.
      
      Another interesting fact is that Carter Page was approached in 2013 by a Russian who attempted to recruit him. Page reported this to the FBI and that Russian was prosecuted. In March 2016 Page was giving evidence against that Russian at his trial. And yet some 3-4 months later he’s a suspected Russian connected person of such importance that the FBI applied for a FISA warrant to surveil him and any of his contacts. Oddly enough that warrant was sought after he was tapped to join Trump’s foreign advisory team. So that surveillance was able to be extended to cover the entire Trump campaign team.
      
      All these details, coming out slowly and only after a lot of pressure has been applied, very strongly suggests to me that an extremely illegal and unethical plot existed to use the US intelligence establishment to spy on the Republican presidential candidate with the direct intent to ensure that they lost to Hilary Clinton in the election.
      
      Has to be a story way bigger and far more sinister than Watergate. And just IMHO, it goes right to the top on the previous administration. Serious jail time has to be handed out to those responsible for arranging, organising, and approving such activity.

It looks like the new PM in Malaysia has opened a real can of corruption worms. The day after the election result was known he stopped the former PM leaving the country. A few days later the Police raided his two residences and some buildings associated with him. They took out 72 bags of cash and 264 handbags from one house (and more handbags than that from the other). Many of those handbags were Birkin bags (starting price US$10,000 !!) and some were full of jewellery etc.
They have been counting and recording the money, of many denominations, for several days.
According to this report 27 of the 72 bags had 109 million ringits (about NZ$30 million)

On Sunday DPF blogged about Australia’s latest Walter Mitty impersonator – former WA Labor MP Barry Urban. Urban lied in public and in Parliament “for years”. He even lied to a parliamentary committee that was investigating him!

The committee also found Mr Urban — in both written submissions that included forged documents, and in his testimony before the committee — deliberately sought to mislead it, with no evidence to back up a string of claims.

So there’s a by-election next month to replace Urban. But WA Labor’s candidate seems to have trouble telling the truth too!

Western Australia’s Labor candidate for Darling Range is in the spotlight again, this time for claiming university qualifications she doesn’t appear to have.

Colleen Yates admitted on Wednesday it was “fairly ambitious” to have written the date range of 2016 to 2018 under her LinkedIn entry for an MBA, which she has not completed.

Ms Yates has been contacted for comment on a Fairfax report that raises doubts about university qualifications she claimed on the social media website to have obtained in the US. WAtoday has reported three US institutions – Washington University, Fort Lewis College and the University of Phoenix – said Ms Yates had not completed courses there.

    Had a phone call from a reader. He was reading up on the candidates for Northcote and checked out their Linked In profiles. He saw a MBA from AUT listed for Shanan Halbert (the Labour candidate). He checked out the AUT graduate page and they do not have Halbert as a graduate.
    
    He then checked back Halbert’s Linked In page the next day, and the MBA mention was gone. So looks like tracks being covered. However the Internet tends to leave footprints.

By-election Results are in. Rural Waitakere Ken Turner wins against strong contenders and breaks the Labour-Green monopoly . Maungakiekie falls to Labour. Candidate profiles were interesting, including a candidate who’s skills included walking in the christmas parade as a blue smurf. And a Communist League candidate who “opposes imperialist war and foreign military intervention in the Middle East and elsewhere.” ” And is a supporter of Cuba’s socialist revolution”. Not sure when imperial war will becoming up on the local agendas but good to know where the candidates stand.

      But he was the Minister in charge of enforcing the CAA Rules… and he NOW realises he had a duty to follow them.
      
      I wouldn’t like to fly with a bunch of yobs who think they can bypass CAA’s rules.
      
      Do you know the difference between a plane taxiing along a runway and a plane in flight? Perhaps that has something to do with that little announcement about when you can switch your phones on.
      
      Does Phil Twyford have a Pilot’s licence?
      Do you have a Pilot’s Licence, stephieboy?

I wore a wry smile when I read about Twyford contravening CAA regulations using his celllhone on board an Air NZ aircraft. Just a touch of karma there given my recollections of Twyford screaming for Big Gerry’s resignation after illegally using a security door at Ch’ch Airport. Interesting that Gerry lost his portfolio while Twyford got the wet bus ticket treatment from Cindy. Help must be hard to find.

  A Maori neighbour of mine told me she was almost 20 when she had her first….”the oldest” among her siblings.
  Apparently they don’t realize that one of the main criteria for getting a home loan is how many dependant kids you have.
  Probably why so many are homeless or having to live in grotty lodges.

With reference to the second item on TV One’s News tonight regarding the culling of 90 cows on the Burgess farm in Prebbleton, suspected of being infected with Mycoplasma Bovis, serious questions need to be raised about MPI’s handling of this outbreak.

In an interview with Guyon Espiner on RNZ today, Honorary Professor at Lincoln University Dr. Keith Woodford expressed the view that they ( MPI ) should stop the slaughter:

Dr Woodford said that MPI does not have the logistical capacity to manage this, there are huge delays between when they recognise the farm has to be traced and before they can get to the farm and put restrictions on it. Farmers just cannot get decisions out of MPI that they need to be able to deal with the situation.
Dr Woodford said that there is an animal welfare crisis looming in Mid Canterbury on approximately 100 farms due to movement restrictions. Farmers are unable to transport their animals to where the feed is.
He said that elsewhere in the world they manage it without these slaughter programmes, there is no easy solution, no perfect solution, whatever we do there are people who will be hurt.
There is a risk that the cure is worse than the disease.

Chief Veterinary Officer for the New Zealand Veterinary Association Dr. Helen Beattie says vets prefer eradication:

Cabinet will be meeting on Monday to make a final decision on what action to take. The favoured course of action is to head down the eradication route.
