This Wednesday it will have been 8 months since a man is alleged to have sexually assaulted two young men and two young woman at a Labour Party Youth camp. I have some questions.

1. To Megan Woods; We’re grateful that you learned of these events ‘while scrolling through your Facebook feed’ on 4th March. You presumably asked your son about what went on at the camp as he was an attendee. What did he say? Oh also, perhaps you could let us know why Facebook profile has vanished. Thanks.

2. To Jacinda Ardern; This happened on your watch. Yet you’ve done nothing, other than signal delays and make excuses. Can you categorically assure us that none of the victims were in any way pressured to retract, or to not lay complaints? If not, why not? It’s been 8 months Prime Minister. Totally unacceptable, more so from someone who pontificates endlessly about never lying, about transparency, fairness, and justice. When will the police’s investigation be complete? When will justice be done?

3. To Mike Bush; Can you categorically assure us that the relationship between the alleged offender and Labour-party officials and/or MPs has had zero bearing on the speed, nor the scope, nor the thoroughness of NZ Police’s investigation? It’s been 8 months. Why has your team not completed the investigation, and either brought charges or dropped the case?

This whole matter has both the odor and the transparency of an effluent pond. Despite us coming to expect ineffectual leadership and coverups from our shambolic government, these victims deserve better.

      Thanks. This issue pisses me off in a couple of ways. Firstly, there is the outright hypocrisy of claimed transparency, then this cover-up.
      Second, For a couple of decades now, and across different governments, I’ve had a sinking feeling that our elected leaders are interfering with enforcement practices where their interests are at stake. It’s the beginning of corruption of the type that we want to stamp out before it’s accepted as ‘routine’

        People may have forgotten this, but after the teapot tapes affair was concluded Bradley Abrose sued John Key for defamation. Who do you think won?
        
        Ambrose received a confidential settlement from John Key and an official apology.

  Just one issue with what you write kk – a man has been charged with four counts of indecent assault, has pleaded not guilty, and will face trial in the Auckland District Court in March 2019. So on that level at least, the Police have done their job.

    Yes, there have been charges and a remand. But why is the remand period quite so long – with the accused able to live out in the wider community for about a year with his name suppressed.
    
    By the time this matter comes to full trial, how many of young Labour Camp victims’ memories will have faded in relation to some factual details and circumstances of their physical surroundings at relevant times? If defence counsel is able to highlight inconsistent factual details in the youngsters’ testimony, the well-connected accused my be able to avoid personal identification that is beyond reasonable doubt.

      Yes cg, that thought has occurred to me. Testimonial evidence is subject to entropy, so the length of time between charges and trial almost certainly favours the accused. Who decided that March 2019 was a suitable trial date? Did the PM or any government official lobby – however subtly – for a distant trial date?

        March 2019 is 13 months after the alleged sexual assaults, and some 8 months after the accused’s Court appearance from which he was remanded.
        
        The distance being put between the alleged offences and a full trial is especially worrying when so much of the prosecution case is going to rely upon the memories of young (alleged) victims. Some of the tactics likely to be used by defence counsel are not difficult to foresee.

    Interesting. Don’t we have large numbers of people demanding that we just _believe_ sexual assault accusers? No actual evidence required, just believe them. Aren’t they generally of the same political persuasion as the (alleged) offender in this case?

        If we start hearing from people that we should _believe_ their sexual assault claims, even though there’s zero corroborating evidence, we should point them to this case and say “OK, hang him high”. They might then think a presumption of innocence isn’t so bad after all.

  It is also funny that the little Gang Green member has had her own mental health issues but has been gathering her “newest” date from numerous campus visits. What next ” Suicide Failures Anonymous”? My name is Chloe and I am a failure.
  We must question how there has been such a massive increase in so many young people who have developed mental health issues? They have never had it so good yet is seems to have reached almost epidemic levels. Hurty feelings and an absence of “likes” on social media might only mean they are stupid and mad at the world but otherwise functional. Yes mental health issues have become more of a problem but best not hold expectations too high for help from the COL.

    SOme of the new conditions being proposed:
    * Battle hours restricted so that breast feeding soldier mums can do their thing.
    * Battles limited to 10 hours, then a compulsory break for 14 hours, max 45 hours per week.
    * No artillery fire during nap time (2pm – 3pm).

      Couldn’t agree more LK – as society gets scarier and meth takes over our crims and turns ordinary people into evil scum – we have a Police force that is becoming ever less experienced, is stretched beyond means, and is apparently only focused on attracting people on the basis of how they ‘fit in’ to society, rather than what level of expertise and skill they might bring to the Police. After all, when the proverbial hits the fan, who are we going to turn to? – yep, hip hop dancing and trendiness will help a lot!!

      Right alwyn it was said while doing a stint or half National Service training in Waiouru the security gate were there to keep the regular force IN if war broke out. Even funnier was they did not have me on their list of expected arrives coming of the train so just stuck me in a barrack anyway. Returning to work after 6 weeks they asked “where have you been?” The Police came the day after you left to look for you. Talk about dysfunction junction apart from some great seasoned instructors the place was like a rest home. Lol

Whoever types the SuperSeniors eNewsletter seems to have a missing key on their machine. The section From the Minister Tracey Martin contains Theres, Theyve, dont, Im and familys.
Is this Newspeak, ignorance or laziness? Who do we complain to? (To whom do we complain? I’m not an english scholar but words like Im I find insulting.)

    Here is a direct cut & paste from the e-newsletter I received – it seems all in order to me?:

    My last few columns have touched on a key piece of work that we’re in the middle of – creating a new strategy to support seniors to live well.
    
    The first phase of the work, finding out what people think and want, is finished.
    
    There’s been good interest and engagement with around 470 submissions from individuals and groups.
    
    Some of the early themes from the submissions are that people want sufficient income to have a good life, they want good health and to keep connections with the people that matter to them. They’ve also said they want to be treated with respect, work if they wish and want it recognised that the older population are diverse. It’s certainly true that not everyone over 65, or 85, is the same or wants the same things.
    
    I don’t think any of those things are a surprise. The challenge is going to be what areas to focus on and what, as a country and government, we do to address the gaps and keep encouraging opportunities.

        It will all come down to individual browsers.
        They probably send that newsletter out using a programme like MailChimp – and with over 720,000 people receiving NZ Super not everyone will be running the same software/email programmes on their PCs.
        You could always unsubscribe/resubscribe to see if that fixes it for the next edition. Or if the content is not interesting enough just unsubscribe completely!

    But James Stephenson even after a year they are only talking about some rule changes they have yet to figure out that will require amendments to the Resource act. As always indicating it will all change the instant they finally get their act sorted out with more fairy dust.
    It was National that eventually set ANY level of standard as well as setting a game plan even the most optimistic expert considered would take a decade to reverse. The modest targets set were open to review if progress was better than predicted but at least there WAS a starting point. The constant over simplification coming from the COL is one of the biggest illustrations of their sad levels of competence as well as their lack of work while in opposition for nine long years. Newton lost a fortune — around 20,000 pounds — in one of history’s most notorious market collapses, the South Sea Bubble, when the South Sea Company, primarily a slave trader, collapsed in 1720.

If only he’d remembered his early work as a physicist and applied his revolutionary theories on gravity to markets.

In an eerie parallel, Australian real estate, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, now appears to be succumbing to Newton’s third law; that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

    It’s Newton’s third law that means things can go up and not come down. The “Action” of high-velocity combustion products exiting a rocket engine means there is a “Reaction” force which pushes the rocket upwards. HTH

I expect tomorrow that the Pampered Princess with her flights, her nannies, her photographers and her expensively upgraded Premier House will be given her usual easy run with patsy questions and lots of warm chuckles.

  Agreed but I believe that the Premier house upgrade was assessed during National’s tenure, but it would seem that they didn’t or couldn’t justify the expense at the time.
  Possums in the roof will be causing damage and extraordinary in the middle of Wellington, you would think, despite the fact that there is bush at the back of the property. People have been contracted to do the work previously but must be inept. It can only be a local population of possums, if they were eradicated it would surely be unlikely that more would traverse the traffic to take up residence.

Michael Barnett of the Auckland Business group was told by the government to find funding for the new motorway to the Whangaparoa Peninsular, so he has. There are regularly 5km traffic jams on the existing road. Barnett has a Chinese roading firm lined up in a partnership agreement for them to fund and build a tolled motorway, and they will receive payment over a set number of years. The proposal is before the government. Will Twyford approve the public/private partnership to build the motorway the government has deferred for 20 years?

  I saw that in the news the other day. All the motorways around Bangkok are tolled and at least some of them are financed on the same bases. Seems to work there because of the large traffic volumes.
  The thing that I would be worried about would be something in the small print to guarantee a contribution from the taxpayer/ratepayer if the toll intake didn’t reach a certain level.

    The Chinese company is happy for payment to be over a longer period due to less traffic in NZ. As long as the concrete, etc are guaranteed to be up to NZ standards I can’t see a downside. P/PP’s are often used around the world to build infrastructure.

  But waikatogirl this could be the start of more “China cheque book diplomacy” they are using in the Pacific, South China seas and Africa. AKA “Chinese “debt trap” diplomacy. It’s nothing new, but a recent report by Harvard University researchers has resurrected long-held fears that China’s debt diplomacy poses a threat to Australian interests in the Pacific.” Fiji are getting to understand it has some drawbacks as well now. The age old story of following the money while also interesting how so many “projects” they are involved in have substantial cost increases as well as long completion delays. Not to mention “supplier” preferences written into their contracts. The main concern is the the COL might become so desperate that they get sucked in easier than most.

      After reading the column twice and that paragraph three times, I’m not certain I do understand it, except in a very general sense.
      
      The column, including this paragraph, is a rant with too many wordy and vague metaphors, but not enough concise precision; so, yes, it’s a lousy writing style if the aim is to inform and persuade rather than to let off steam, or if he expects impatient readers to return for more.

The problem as I see it is pretty simple but is becoming clearer by the day, both here and elsewhere in the Western World. The left, in all its manifestations has abandoned any pretense of a common community with the more traditionally-viewed members of society who believe there are values (specifically the Judeo-Christian ethic) that are worth preserving. They want to overturn all of our traditional values and pursue this goal in a totally zero-sum manner. Truth, justice and righteousness have no real place in their vocabulary – they use the words but have no interest or real conception of what those words actually mean. Hence their abandonment of any semblance of due process in the Kavanaugh matter in the US as only one example. They want power and are prepared to lie and cheat and incite the mob to get it. We need to understand this – that there is a war going on. It may not have spilled over into overt violence but it is a war nonetheless. Politics has become not a process by which we might solve our problems in a conciliatory way of benefit to all, but merely war by other means. And understanding that we can give no quarter. They must be defeated (not by violence; I’m not advocating that at all) if civil society at any level is to be preserved. I cannot see any alternative; we must resist their encroachments against our common interests without compromise. Compromise to them is merely a sign that we are weak and only encourages even further encroachment against our freedoms.

  Why don’t we look at the countries who have achieved negative population growth without murder or coercion. Those would be most countries in the West. How did they do it? By educating women and raising their aspirations, introducing healthcare, providing affordable energy for heating/cooking and improving living standards. So, if we can introduce those to the countries listed, surely population reduction would follow without the need for a killer disease. I suspect the UN is not interested in going down the route.

      I have to go to a guy every 6 months to have him tell me that the drops he’s got me on continue to stave off glaucoma.
      $85 for less than 10 minutes, thank you very much.
      And he can’t blame the cost of his equipment, because the machine at the hospital that does the exact same job as his does has been in use since the 1920s.
      He also wants to charge me about $4000 for a cataract, which takes him about an hour.
      If I’m lucky I’ll get it done in the public system before it gets too much worse, but it’s looking less likely since the Government changed.

The Fool Factor (unintended consequences) have dominated all their decisions to date but will only as usual be seen in hindsight in the fullness of time. The flow on effect of such a rapid increase in fuel prices will surely see a new line of BS and excuses why living is so expensive. So our Dear Leader discusses rising petrol prices at the post Cabinet press conference. Great – or so I thought. Perhaps she could really take this opportunity to strike a blow for her government by say, cancelling the next two planned tax hikes on petrol or even rescinding the one that’s just come into force.

Instead she announces an amendment to the Commerce Act which will enable the government to … form yet another working group to investigate the issue.

I’m in Bali right now but I’m sure you can hear my scream of frustration from here! ?

  The articles I read were screaming about crooked petrol companies fleecing the public but no mentioned of all the taxes. Apparently our prices are at the top of the OECD per Megan Wood. I suspect the report will provide the Government with an economics lesson, we are a small population along way from many markets and prone to currency shocks. Anyways, I thought fossil fuels were a bad thing – hence the Taranaki ban – so shouldn’t she want the price to go sky high?

The Princess has proclaimed to her subjects that petrol prices are too high but it is not the Government’s fault. It is due to price gouging by the petrol companies.
She knows this because of the thousands of comrades who have signed petitions against the evil fuel merchants and suppliers.
Was surprised to see these fuel merchants having very little to say about it – on TV 1 news at least – which will reinforce the narrative that this government is not to blame.
Didn’t see the Nat Party having anything useful to say either.
The Princess rules.

Maybe the oil companies need higher margins to pay for the continued staff wages and all of the government regulations etc.
Maybe they are paying Ardern back for banning the oil industry with a wave of her hands.
