I’m not sure what’s more embarrassing: AirNZ’s latest safety video, or our Prime Minister’ vacuous flannel. Call it a tie.

Tourists: along with a great many New Zealanders, I apologise for both.

That video’s choreography was clearly storyboarded with crayon, while the audio flowed like a succession of stubbed toes.

Worse, the important safety messages where unwillingly shoehorned into awkwardly manufactured spaces. Apparently being surrounded by 20,000 litres of burning fuel and needing to exit the aircraft in a hurry is, and I quote, “a pickle”.

Perhaps Luxton got badass DJ Ardern to hit the mixer for this one?

Awful. Cringeworthy. A reincarnation of fingernails being dragged down a blackboard.

Air New Zealand, please make it go away.

  Saw it for the first time this week. It’s absolutely awful. Worst is the track has no flow as you have rappers trying to talk through messages that have no rhythm or rhyme

  It is however acceptable that they do not travel to Australia.
  
  “Refugees, we encourage them to travel outside of Nauru but not to Australia,” Mr Waqa said. “But some have travelled to Fiji on visas. We give them a Nauru passport, a special passport. And so they are free to move around.’’
  
  Mr Waqa [President of Nauru] later confirmed that New Zealand was one of the nations that was yet to agree to Nauru’s request to allow its refugees entry on holiday visas.
  
  Just at the moment not allowed by NZ to make the connecting flight from Fiji to NZ.
  Nauru bas sent on to NZ a UN recommendation to be ok with freely moving about in the region.
  
  So Ardern has so far not followed UN advice. 🙂
  or some minister has not told her. 🙂
  Now there is a real reason to sack him. ! ! 🙂

Renters being pushed out of their rentals in Mount Maunganui. Well one couple was, and twice in a few months. Because, they say, Airbnb. Has to be a suspicion that there was more to it than that, though the journalist seems to have accepted the tenants’ assessment as 100% correct.

And though the article mentions a shortage of rentals in passing, nobody in the article mentions why …. Could it possibly in part be landlords saying sod this for a game of soldiers? Taking their ball and going home?

One couple said they were being pushed out of their own town and blamed Airbnb for the lack of rental accommodation. A couple in their mid-30s, who wanted to remain anonymous, said they were being “forced” out of their Mount Maunganui rental so their landlords could turn it into an Airbnb for the summer. They were also asked to leave another rental only a few months earlier, because of Airbnb.

        One of my fave teachers at school – and I went to his funeral in 2009 – taught both Geography and English.
        
        In each and every essay I wrote about that big bit of water between bits of Spain, France, Italy et al and the continent of Africa I used to (mis)spell it as Meditterranean…
        
        Eventually he decided to make an example of me and, in front of the (giggling) class, I was invited to explain just what Mediterranean meant.
        
        Well, happily, the day he did explain it I must have been listening (and not eying up a gorgeous girl who sat alongside me) so I said ‘Between lands’.
        
        ‘Yes’, Teach said. ‘But literally…?’
        
        ‘Um’, I began, less certainly. ‘Terra is land. Or Earth. Medi is middle. So … Middle Land? Middle of the Earth?’
        
        ‘Spot on! So why, in your essays, are you trying to have me believe it’s Middlet Earth or Middle Tearth?’
        
        That – and the gorgeous girl’s guffaws as I re-took my seat – stuck in my mind far longer than any red circle on my essay might have done, heh heh…
        
        And it also instilled my ongoing-to-this-day search for the derivation of words we use…
        
        I fail to see why modern teachers can’t do the same.
        
        Trivia, incidentally, is an interesting word.
        
        Break it down – ‘tri’ is ‘three’ and ‘via’ is ‘roads’.
        
        Three roads.
        
        Because, the story goes, in olden times if you wanted the public to know something you put the info up on a billboard in a public place – and you couldn’t GET much more public than where three roads met.

        SN:AFU – the state of education in NZ today. We have kids on the verge of adulthood whose vocabulary doesn’t include words in common usage. Probably because they are difficult to text.
        Hey, Teach! Tell the kids that English has many single words that can be used instead of several – and that ‘trivial’ is such a one.
        Not surprising when teachers have all but given up teaching the subjects that schools were established for: language, maths, and writing – as pure subjects. If they had stuck to their jobs they would be far happier and less stressed, and the kids would be better equipped to be responsible. citizens.

        Existentail? Not sure. Children’s home life has a lot to do with their development – kids from sporty families tend to more sporty, those from music loving families tend to be more musical. If your family doesn’t value reading (or education in general) then the kids are less likely to be avid readers. Either my wife or I read to our children for 15-20 minutes at bedtime most nights – it was part of the routine.
        
        I think that it is sometimes too easy to put all the blame on the education system for how kids turn out. My children knew words like trivial as much as anything because my wife and I would use such words.
        
        Also, I would curious how many of this Year 13s actually didn’t know the word “trivial”.. My guess – a trivial amount 🙂

  1. Mau be the dumb asses should stop playing fortnight on their iPads & read a few more books; and
  
  2. Somebody give that kid a board game called Trivial Pursuits.
  
  Give me strength – these kids are year 13 and will be expecting to go to university next year. Talk about “dumbed down New Zealand”. Thank you the education system, the media and stupid parents, your job is complete. We have school graduates who are truly ignorant.

  Un-bloody-believable. But never mind: they’re all going to learn Te Reo Maori instead – so much more useful than stale old English!
  I don’t want to trivialise it though; we think as we speak (because we mostly think in words), so limited vocabulary means restricted thinking. This may well explain why a “reverse Flynn effect” has been observed in a number of Western countries over the course of the last two or three decades. Are we raising a generation of dullards?

    Everything in their life is Sooooooo important/meaningful.
    
    A trivial rise in temperature is climate armageddon.

        It’s not the talented that we should worry about: they will always rise to the top. It’s the bulk of the middle-performers who are the most susceptible to poor educational standards; even in these increasingly technological times, there will still be a demand for reasonably competent personnel. The alternative is for us to acquire an ever-expanding lumpen-proletariat, which will be ultimately detrimental to the whole of society.

        And your evidence for that is what?
        
        The tragedy, stephieboy, is that most folks of average ability should be able to sail through NZ’s education system…because it’s not hard.
        
        But as I have encountered many.many times, lots of able kids have been seriously let down with poor teaching (especially in Maths, literacy and Science).
        
        Place these kids in an environment where they are not treated like dummies, and where their gaps of learning are addressed, then they can achieve at a level they had never imagined.

    Great Jazzby more unintended consequences being on display as we see there is an even greater cost to force feeding native gibberish than the mega millions wasted each year. It is now a long term hindrance to success for students exiting the state system. Though it might help explain why English levels will be dropped for imported teachers needed in such a rush.

    Worse Southern Raider is that students reach this level without having been guided how to expand their learning beyond the classroom? The lasting lesson from school days was being prepared to learn something new everyday. Some are surely trivial things but often many are significant new things that help not just understanding but also better ways.
    Yet nursing students get to spend the afternoon in a library researching one single native gibberish word? One of the biggest beefs from a nursing student friend who was very critical of how much they were NOT being taught about the critical things they needed to learn. In fact he was learning more from working night-shifts in a nursing home to pay his way.

    Right timmydevo learning is very much a progressive thing which essentially needs the right foundations laid in the classroom where it starts. Later it is expanded by interest as well as enthusiasm for a chosen field where it is further enhanced by learned skills.
    A great example frequently seen is a guitar teacher who puts up regular lessons on You Tube who uses his own compositions to teach technics. His method is unique in so much as he highlights what he describes as “take-aways” as well as prompting viewers to adapt the process into their own playing and music. Rather than just learn the original piece featured in the lesson as being all it is. IMO a special ability in any teacher.

New Zealand’s main claim to fame with the Soviets for some time was that we had the audacity to expel their Ambassador for interference in our domestic affairs. New Zealand was sent to Siberia for that for many years. We were definitely regarded as second-string. Hence we were dealt with by the 2nd European division of the Soviet MFA and subsequently by the 2nd Asia division of Russian MFA. New Zealand was seen by Soviet officials as a faraway, possibly exotic, appendage of the British Empire. In the 1980s they were pleased with the success of their efforts to detach us from ANZUS as part of the global chess game with the West and funded “peace movements” here and elsewhere. This is a case of a made up culture. Pre-European Maori didn’t have shoes, so there never was a protocol about shoes in a meeting house. Move on 180 years now there is.

Funny thing in my younger years visiting marae, I still don’t recall there ever being any protocol about footwear in meeting houses in a number of marae I visited.

  Maori, before the evil whitey came and saved them, was in borderline subsistence living.
  
  They brilliantly emigrated without taking any serviceable quadrupeds for food supply.
  They brilliantly made a ‘great migration’ but a couple hundred years later did not know of sails.
  Were great navigators and came to New Zealand (OK let’s call it Ao tear rower even though such a concept never existed 600 years ago ) in a great migration but were unable to leave when it got cold.
  
  Compare and contrast to how Greenland was settled in the medieval warming period and when it cooled they got the flock out of there. Most did and were able to leave.
  Contrast: The Maori had no way of leaving. Did not even know where they came from.
  
  Probably all pointing to the issue that they were the riff raff of their community and were booted out…there was no planned ‘great migration’.
  The rest is all made up via missionaries and ‘verbal history’ which is why many are talented in court today with verbal history that may or may not align with evidence from a crime scene.
  
  They had no musical instruments of any sort -whilst the Aborigine had the didgeridoo!
  They had no silk, cotton, or wool so had to make do with flax to dress in, supplemented with a few feathers.
  There was no WINZ that’s for sure .
  The are no written word or even hieroglyphics so communication was poor. Perhaps Maori did invent something… ta da … the Chinese whisper!

      A while ago no NZ’er needed a passport to go to Australia.
      Now we need passports to go Australia.
      
      It would seem that laws may be put in place so certain citizens may not go to Australia, and that will entangle the need for who can obtain visas.
      
      Nauru expects NZ to accept Nauru passports and visas under UN recommendations.
      
      The President of Nauru accepts that Australia, will not accept Nauru passports and visas, and would appear to advise that of its passport and visa holders not to try for Australia.
      
      Just why are these things tightening up?
      
      Biometric, eyes, fingerprints maybe needed next, so wipe down that machete, knife, as it may be linked to a “known wolf” crime. 🙂

      Stephie, the Irish border is a red herring. Shengan was in place before the Irish Peace accord, and that didn’t stop the world, as people could still move between England/WalesScotland and Europe without trouble.
      
      It is still possible to check people going from Northern Ireland to the UK mainland by doing a passport check without breaching the agreements when checking in for a flight or ferry crossing. This is necessary as much for EU citizens as it is non EU citizens travelling through the RoI to the UK mainland. Everything is possible, it is just how it is done.

        There is a hard border already. Different currencies on either side of the line. And it was the Micks who went into the Euro , when most of their trade is with sterling UK .
        The Oirish helped make that border harder when they went out of sterling.

  I recall when she was Chairman of the party under Duncan-Smith, the media touted her as a future leader, and everytime she gave a conference speech, you would shake your head and say no way. But somehow, the stars aligned and hey presto…May became PM.

    The Law still says that the Police are fully in charge of an accident. And that it is their charge to collect evidence which may suggest that it is a crime scene.
    They have said that they will NOT enter the Mine Drift as it would be a breach of the re-enacted Health and Safety law after the explosion.

I see that the COL are changing the Law, ‘Court Matters. Bill’ to allow a snowflake at the Human Rights Review Panel to be able to Dismiss Charges, ‘Make it easier’ for people who can’t afford find to pay them off ($0.50c a week) and increase the powers of the Disputes Tribunal (i.e. Take away the law and base the results on soft hearts and the wishes of the Taniwha)

Tha average custodial father gets less than a third of the child support that a custodial mother gets.

Since the government confiscates a huge proportion of child support money it is not surprising so few men get custody or what should happen, 50:50 shared care.

Treating men like crap adds hundreds of millions to the crown accounts.

Unfortunately once you count men who give NZ the middle finger and leave NZ, plus men who drop out of the workforce, have mental health issues, and those that suicide, child support is an economic disaster for the crown.

Child supports effect on Crown accounts is a minimum loss of about $2 billion each year.

I see a probably well-intention, but nevertheless massively misguided principal is doing away with prizegiving. He observes:

“Rewards – like punishments – are unnecessary when these things are present, and are ultimately destructive in any case.

“There is abundant research showing that awards, rewards and other external incentives undermine intrinsic motivation. For the majority of children who don’t receive awards, the prizegiving spurs boredom, anger or resentment.”

He needs to read a little less social liberal education material, and a little more science.

Humans are chemically hard-wired to respond to external incentives. Learning to learn from the consequences of our action, or even inaction has be pivotal to getting us from the caves. Learning to positively manage our own disappointment and anger is what has made us civilised.

Cameron Lockie should get another job. He’s busy limiting kids’ development in his current role.

    That is the joke. The standard setup on Great Barrier Island is solar electricity ‘firmed’ by petrol generator (to do the laundry and make the toast) and LPG natural gas for cooking and heating. This shows natural gas is essential where there is no mains electricity. If NZ runs out of natural gas, it will need to import LNG from Australia as the Japanese do. Once they did have an english text and showed a brief history of the Korean war chinese style-and surprisingly actually mentioned the term UN that the Koreans/Chinese were fighting against. Thought they would edit that out.

But our refusal to acknowledge and confront CCP thuggery and CCP interference in our domestic politics sees us morally adrift, increasingly isolated from our former friends and drifting into China’s sphere of influence. The other day we went down to the Auckland War Memorial Museum and took a look at the crosses on the front lawn representing the eighteen thousand plus war dead.
I read that a couple of tourists were busted pinching some crosses earlier on.
Next week the crosses will be removed and people with relatives have been invited to take take their crosses. Someone was spotted removing about a dozen random crosses and when asked said they were for to be used as garden ornaments.
I’m not surprised at this behaviour, but it’s pretty bloody disappointing. I have an uncle who died in WEII and to have his name as an ornament in some stranger’s garden would be an insult to our family.

Update on don’t ever threaten my sister in law.

My nephew is 15 and has a like brothers best friend.
The friend hasn’t had a good year. His step father who is the only dad he has known died in an accident earlier this year. He left school at that time followed by my nephew. Good news is he has a full time job with a cheap house getting arranged for him. My nephew is part time at the same place so they will be flatting together.

My sister has discovered that being 15 he can’t get a bank account as he required proof of identity from his mother. His wages are going into his mothers account. She’s drunk and drugged on a bender right now so the friend can’t get any of his money. They have refused to let him get an account.

The mother has never worked a day in her life, arrived into a small town, already baby in tow, and had another 5 kids to 3 or 4 dads in short time, before meeting the step father. She still has an $80,000 benifit fraud debt. But she’s ok money wise as insurance freeholded step fathers significant assets.

One of her boys has shacked up with a Maori lady who’s never worked a day in her life. Kid in tow. She sent that son to prison for a significant length of time as a result of the son knocking her out with one punch. He now is to scared not to do as he’s told. Apparently he said no to her so she went and got the X box, snuck up on him and smashed it on his head. That’s OK, but White Ribon points out DV and violence are men things.

My sister turns up at the mothers house to pick up the nephew. She is confronted my the Maori lady. They are looking after the house (hmm plants), and one abandoned child, while mums on the bender. She’s sticking around permanently now for the free rent.

My sister asked what the hells going on with his wages.

She in no uncertain terms tells my sister to “fuck off”. Normally this results in a fat lip but my sister is street smart and pregnant. She knows the Maori chick would use the police as a weapon if she did that.

She left, drove to the bosses house. Had a talk. Went home and found an underused bank account. Cleared it of funds. The boys wages are now going into a bank account of his own.

In a week or two when my sister goes around to their house again. Fireworks.

Many people just use a bike for recreation on the weekends.

  I read that drivel. I am no economist, but the fundamentals of supply and demand dictate the price that anyone is prepared to pay in a free market. I believe we are a few houses in short supply. I also believe that Twitford’s miracle housing fantasy has been a bit of a fizzer. Until there are more houses than buyers, I can’t see quality properties losing value. The only thing that bugs me is this stupid ring fencing of losses. Why must property investors be the ONLY business not allowed to claim back losses?

One of the biggest issues the media have been grappling with is whether to name the National MP who was reported to be in a three-year relationship with Ross, and who anonymously made allegations about his behaviour in Melanie Reid and Cass Mason’s report, Four women speak out. The same National MP was also reported to have sent Ross the infamous abusive text message in which she told him, “You deserve to die.”

As with DPF’s post titled: “Would a male sex offender get off so lightly?” If this had been a male MP attacking a female MP with mental health issues, would he receive such favourable pussy-pass treatment?

Graham Adams argues in favour of disclosure and is worth quoting at length: “My view is that she should be named (and I think most of the media are waiting for someone else to do it first!). Until she is named, it casts suspicion on other female MPs who are not involved, which is unfair. Also, the female MP whose name has been frequently mentioned on social media represents a conservative electorate, is socially conservative herself and has promoted family values from her first days in Parliament. I think the public should always been told when an MP’s publicly professed values are at sharp variance to their own private behaviour. That is an obligation the media should fulfil. Furthermore, she has no right to privacy when she has anonymously and publicly shamed Jami-Lee Ross in the Newsroom piece by Melanie Reid. She’s an MP and a highly educated professional whose actions should be held to account. If she had any courage, she would come clean herself.”

Unfortunately, by not having the courage to put her name to her anonymous attacks on JLR, MPs such as Amy Adams and Sarah Dowie are being regularly brushed with the taint of adultery on social media and accused of being the female MP in question.

“I imagine that if gender roles had been reversed and a man had sent a similar text to the female MP that included personal abuse (including calling her fat and sweaty) and telling her that she ‘deserved to die’, he would have been outed just as soon as his identity had been established. Not many journalists would have hesitated. And he would have been widely and viciously pilloried for it. The MP has successfully cast herself as a victim despite her rank in society as an MP and a successful professional, which is presumably why journalists are hesitant to name her.”
