No Nikki, not a good move. If Labour and the Greens support your language(s) in school proposal, then it sucks.

She said the bill would also ensure universal access to te reo Māori as a result and more young people learning te reo.

Universal access? Nonsense. This is essentially a stalking horse for compulsory te reo, dressed up with the appeal of ‘other’ languages as options.

  A basic failure of logic. Kids who are struggling with their first language tend not to bother trying to learn a second one. At the moment primary schools are hardly making any effort to teach science, history and geography. Those should be the priorities after reading, writing and maths.

        It would be great to have more language learning in schools, and variety of choice. Real knowledge rather than bullshit about the history of feminism and the religion of Gaia.
        
        Teaching Maori will provide jobs for a few of the scores of folk coming out of universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and wananga with degrees in Maori.
        
        But I recommend using the temporary tourist visa scheme for recruiting as teachers for primary and secondary schools enthusiastic young folk skilled in Spanish,, Japanese, Indonesian, Russian, French, German. There should be plenty of Mandarin, Hindi, and Korean teachers available from among settlers.
        
        Most powerful of all would be to introduce kids to the power of the internet in learning languages, and the great enjoyment
        in talking with learners of English in their native language on Skype.
        
        For the young polyglots who will emerge, why not arouse their interest in Esperanto and others like these:

        And I am pretty sure you are not really motivated by your excuse that it is too easy.Though I see you have lots of upticks, but based on many of the comments on Kiwiblog, the position of many is well removed from say DPF who pretty much in the mid point of the centre right.

        Not every language is for the world stage. It might be primarily about the country itself. Hebrew being a good example. Maori is essentially in the same category.
        
        If you are in public life in New Zealand, having some knowledge of Maori is highly desirable. You need to be able to say a mihi. You need to know a range of waiata. Tena koutou katoa won’t cut it.
        
        Just about every young Maori person working in the public sector seems to be able to speak Te reo. So do many others in the government sector, especially younger professionals. This raises a general expectation upon everyone else. Most government agencies have Te reo courses.

        With our race-based electoral system, knowledge of Maori is marginally important for politicians in non-Maori electorates.
        
        Surveys show the number of Maori speakers continues to decline.The present big push by our State and near-duopoly media to force us to speak Maori can’t work.
        
        If you created interest in all languages in school children, you would find more people would willingly and even enthusiastically learn at least the small amount of knowledge of Maori that Wayne Mapp sees as necessary for politicians and bureaucrats.
        
        Languages are under pressure everywhere. Maori would have a better chance of survival in a nation where people wanted to learn it because of interest rather than because of politically correct hectoring.
        
        Don’t underestimate the pressure Maori is under. English is the world language of business, of politics, of science, of technology, and most importantly, of popular culture and of the internet.

        Most government departments should concentrate on doing what they are set up to do and not run language courses. We struggle to pay our bills and this is how the government (past and present) spend our money.

        There are more than 50 languages that are “primarily about the country itself”. So what?
        
        Maori and Hebrew could hardly be more different. While the former is on state-funded life-support, Lashon Hakodesh survived for centuries, in globally isolated, and usually persecuted communities of Jews. There was no formal inclusion of this language in a host country’s civic life. There was no state funded education. There was no state funded TV/Media/Print channels. Being overheard speaking Hebrew made the person a pogrom target. Yet it survived.

      I’ve seen two types of kids who learn a second language. The ones who were brighter than average to begin with, and the ones whose parents are immigrants. In the second case they start long before primary school.

        My grandson aged three, visiting from Japan, said: Look! a tree house! His first sentence in English after a week in NZ, although his father spoke both languages at home. He chattered for a month –
        He is now in his 2nd year at university, and plans to do a masters in Japan starting 2021.

        Nigel K., have a wander into the language-learning pages of Youtube. You will find young and old people enthusiastically studying languages. Some of these video courses get thousands of “likes”.
        
        There are tips on language learning, international conferences, and polyglots explaining how they have come to speak more than a dozen languages.
        
        The Internet, Youtube, and Skype, are revolutionising language learning.

        Wayne Mapp, Hebrew is a bad example . It’s spoken by a much larger % than Maori.
        
        When almost everyone speaks English and very few, even Maori, can converse in Maori, it is only due to wanting to be fashionable and different that we even speak Maori in government and other official situations. It is mandated not natural.
        
        How is speaking Maori useful in the world or even in NZ ? It’s a quaint gimmick to impress outsiders and pacify some locals and a good way for them to make koha or get government funding.
        
        A unique identity for the country is better when many people can share and understand what gives us that identity Otherwise it remains a gesture and an anachronistic display of nativeness.

      Big “it depends”, especially on the family environment. “Early in life” means in a family context. eg. Parents speak Mandarin and English.
      
      Just teaching the kids to count to ten in Maori at playcentre is not helpful.
      
      Extra languages are helpful in certain circumstances, but I would not make broad-brush statements about it.

        There are different sorts of bilingual situations – a home which uses a mother tongue different from the dominant community language, a home which uses two languages, a community in which two languages are commonly used, a second language taught in school but not used much in the community.
        
        As far as I can tell from very limited knowledge of the research, the last kind of bilingualism produces the least cognitive benefit, yet it will be the bilingualism many NZ students experience.
        
        As always, there is an opportunity cost. While students are learning to speak a second language to varying degrees of competence with varying degrees of cognitive benefit, they are not learning something else.

        CMM my and your understanding is that kids in environments where multiple languages are constantly spoken pick most of them up. Look at Zulu or Xhosa kids that can speak about 4 languages. I learnt French at school, but never heard it spoken. It’s the language I am least comfortable in , where as although I lerant Italian later in life, I constantly heard it and my accent is near perfect although my grammar is attrocious. Afrikaans was constanlty heard, written and read, and of course for two years I spoke nothing but it.
        The proposals for Maori are doomed to failure except where the language is persistently spoken.

        ROL: Yup, you need to actually USE a language for it to have any real value.
        
        I grew up in rural Natal so I had to learn isiZulu otherwise I could not speak to Zulus (who would refuse to speak other people’s languages). I spent a lot of time in the Transkei where the people only speak isiXhosa. Luckily isiZulu and isiXhosa are close enough to migrate easily.
        
        In Natal we had to learn Afrikaans at school from Std 1 (year 3). My Afrikaans was adequate, but not fluent, until I spent 2 years in the army pretty much only using Afrikaans (even when speaking with other English speakers).
        
        At university I did a proper language course on isiXhosa but bailed after a few months due to my dyslexia giving me hassles reading isiXhosa. That was interesting, learning about all the different tenses etc (isiXhosa has more tenses than English), but it also has less prepositions (eg. “in” and “between” are the same word).
        
        There are certainly things you can express with a wide set of languages under your belt. My father (rot his bones) and I would often use English, Afrikaans and isiZulu mixed up – even in the same sentence.
        
        Maori is a contrived language, created by white men. From what I understand it is different from North to South (like the various Nguni languages are similar, but different). Nobody uses Maori for all their daily real-world communications, so it is not being used. That makes it very challenging to get anything useful out of it.

        As an ex-primary teacher for 48 years, I wonder which present curriculum area is going to have to be reduced or removed to make room for Maori!
        Probably more time taken from Language [English] and/or Maths as unlikely the recently introduced bike riding and kapa haka will be touched.
        Jack5’s statement – “English is the world’s language of business, politics, science, technology, popular culture and of the internet” encapsulates
        an important fact which seems to be forgotten these days.

      It’s not as simple as that. Simply exposing children to a second language (taught by a non-native speaker) in the classroom will not really make a difference.
      
      In a billingual household, the children will have “skin in the game” in that one (or other) of their parents will be the native speaker of the second language, and will teach their offspring with all the love and passion of a good parent. The child will listen not only to the words and phrases but also to the emotion and the non-verbal gestures and facial expressions that are also an integral component of the language (try getting a primary school teacher to teach those).

    I can’t speak to your experience, but in my case I’d have to say that learning a second language was nothing but a benefit to me. Given that the second language I learned was English, and that the language spoken at home was Dutch, it was a given that I was going to be bi-lingual, (subsequently tri lingual, to a point, a smattering of French has come in useful as well).
    
    What I have found subsequently is that I have a better than average command of the English language. I’m not trying to be a smart-arse about it, it’s simply a statement of fact. I am frequently complemented on my powers of written and verbal expression, which sometimes make me seem a lot more intelligent than I suspect I actually am, truth be told.
    
    My one regret is that my command of the Dutch language has atrophied through lack of use. I’d love to spend 6 months back in Holland to see if a period of total immersion would re-invigorate my abilities, however as the majority of Dutch citizens now probably speak better English than many New Zealanders, it might be a stretch to call it total immersion!

      I suspect the reason so many New Zealanders are terrible at English is because it is taught badly at school.
      
      I only figured out English when I learned Latin. After learning Latin I was extremely annoyed with my former “English” teachers; they couldn’t teach their subject material to save themselves. They could teach propaganda, on the other hand, like professionals.

        My dad, who did latin at school, reckons it made it a lot easier to pick up other languages later on because the structure was similar. Latin would probably be more useful than Maori. French is good as a lingua franca too.

        I found learning some Latin helped more with getting the head around other inflected languages rather than in building skill in English.
        
        To build confidence and skill in learning languages, introducing kids to other Germanic languages such as German, Dutch, Afrikaans would be helpful.
        
        A Dutch person from the right region of the Netherlands might give kids a one-lesson on Frisian, the closest language to English, apart from Scots, which seems to be itself a language also branched from early English. (That would have been or maybe still would be a good study for Otago-Southland kids.)
        
        What a difference it would have made for the reception given Dutch settlers if teachers in those days had introduced kids to the closeness of their and our languages.

        I wasn’t trying to claim Latin was the best language to learn. However, when I learned Latin, I discovered there were actual rules to English (grammar). I was annoyed that after many years of learning English formally at school, I wasn’t taught English in any meaningful way. Propaganda yes, English no.
        
        While Maori could be useful as a teaching aid for English, I doubt (unionised) teachers could forego teaching propaganda.

    Don’t see why a teacher can’t share a second language while teaching. We have one teacher fluent in Te Reo at primary who incorporates a lot of Maori Language just into her general conversations with kids. Surely that’s the most natural way to learn a second language. As well as kids getting songs etc and a bit of dedicated learning. The question really is how and how much. Do we really need to set aside a separate time for it at primary age. I agree the Maths and reading and small group time with the teacher is shockingly low. With kids maybe sitting in kids with a similar ability with the teacher for maths maybe once every couple of weeks. But they could cut down on bureaucracy, massive amount of assemblies, junior assembly, senior assembly, and enviro schools etc.

    No Duncan. A small proportion of the population are violent toward children and a small population murder children in NZ. I don’t know anyone who has gone to prison, I do not know any criminals, I personally don’t know anyone who bashes his/her partner and certainly not children… Like the majority of NZ’ers, I am not responsible for the tragic killing of children.

      Neither of that duo represent my views and, likely, never will.
      
      Jacinda IS the Prime Minister, though, and hence her views are of interest/value to me given that they can impact on my life.
      
      The opinionists who masquerade as journalists these days offer nothing of interest/value…
      
      Child abuse – hell, abuse of any sort – is abhorrent to me … and to the folk I grew up with/associate with.

      Its actually worse than that WG. The Police, with existing systems, processes and knowledge, can identify which of their “customers” are more likely to kill their children. They are just not allowed to proactively police in that manner.
      
      By bringing together a range of data (benefit payments, police history, petty theft, marital status, location (to the street)) Police have a scarily accurate view of the future.

        Minority Report territory. That is what big data is. However, for the past 20 years in PC NZ, we have not seen anyone call it as it is or be allowed to address the issue. Without being accused of being racist or racially profiling/stereotyping the offending people.
        
        Much easier to have countless work groups and throw lots of taxpayer money at a problem you don’t intend to fix.

        The violence genes operate so as to give a greater reluctance to violence. Those persons with the full measure of an expression of 4 are peaceful, 3 are violent and 2 are found in Paremremo. They are traceable throughout Polynesia and back into their predecessors in Taiwan.
        
        We do have free will but some limits on being goaded to a vigorous response.

        I believe that is a wrong headed view – cultural influences are far more influential in this regard. There is a documented small impact correlated with melanin, but you have to normalize for culture to see it in humans.

        I lived in the Pacific for 7 years. The Samoans referred to themselves as the Irishmen of the Pacific.
        A distinctive gene has been isolated as implicated in violence in recent years. Our tribes are not all the same and do not necessarily have the same origins. Among them Nga Puhi are known for violence.

  I’m not willing personally to share our Prime Minister’s cringe-worthy guilt over the murder in Auckland of a young female British tourist. Of course it was a dreadful murder; and in their own country the British endure their share of such murders as well.

  That number is about 9 – which is 1 every 3 or so years. Still not good, but I wonder if that is in line with most other countries.

      The UK PM is in a very hard place. She would not be thanked if the UK simply upped stakes. Millions of livelihoods would be at immediate stake. Some leeway around the edges is needed. The UK banks would be in jeopardy, travel would be impossible, customs?

I hear Auckland Transport have announced major roadworks on Quay Street from Boxing Day and proudly stated “Quay St will be permanently reduced to two lanes”.

That road is currently four lanes and the only real cross CBD route from Eastern Suburbs to North Side of city. It’s going to be a complete cluster fuck and permanent traffic jam. As it is in peak hours this route is already a car park.

I loved all the Chinese people as they milled around busily on the streets with their noodle stalls and the colourful Eastern smiling faces. Just like Auckland CBD.     When Auckland Transport were placed out in Henderson in the old Waitakere Council building they were meant to ‘eat their own dogfood’ and catch trains to meetings in town.
    This took too long so they used private and council cars as well as a shuttle bus – which was under utilised.
    They do like private cars, nice smelly, oil-burning ones.
    They just don’t want the proletariat using private cars!
    A big F.U. to the Komrades.
    
    This problem of having to be seen to share public transport with the great unwashed has been solved by moving AT to the Central city in the old Vodafone building.
    This move added to transport woes by centralising instead of decentralising eg Hundreds of staff have to go into the central city each day at peak times instead of being decentralised in Henderson and Smales Farm.
    
    Oh and remember if you want to use those marvellous trains tomorrow beware:
    ….A total of 105 train services will not run on Wednesday as union staff members clock off for a meeting.
    Auckland Transport (AT) said members would attend the meeting from 11am to 1pm but trains would be cancelled approximately two hours either side of the meeting as well….
    
    So, 2 hour stop work meeting that disrupts for 6 hours, but it is not a strike under Chairwoman Cindy’s plan of ‘no strikes under my watch’

    He has the same processing as others before the criminal Courts. He may be charged but he will probably not have entered a plea. I understand he has been remanded to re-appear on Jan 23.
    
    Yesterday would have been about charging and showing the Court why he should be remanded in custody when nothing has been proved and he has not agreed. These are ancient safeguards of liberty at work. The suspect is being securely held while the Police prepare their case and also while the suspect prepares his responses to their charges.

Austria, Australia, the USA, Israel, Italy, Bulgaria, Chile, Dominican Republic, Hungary, Poland and Switzerland are not signing up to this. They arent stupid.

In all my years of following politics I have never seen the Police Commissioner take sides as he is supposed to be impartial but this is the second time in a year that our highest Police Officer has played the game of politics to help the reigning Government.

  Note however that Tova O’Brien is the one peddling the story, and her desire to get Bridges’ head on a platter has long overtaken any semblance of objectivity she might have. Every piece she writes on the subject needs to be read through that lens.

    Most people charged in Court with criminal offences do not receive name suppression. So, stephie, how is name suppression tied intrinsically (as you imply) to the “presumption of innocence”?

I get that it’s a shocking situation and doesn’t reflect well on the country but what’s with all the apologies on behalf of New Zealand? There’s only one person responsible (as far as I know). I hope he gets what he deserves.

  – Was he “known to the police”?

      I’ve had associations with some pretty hard nuts over 35 years – including the upper echelons of the NZ criminal fraternity – not now, but going back to the 80s and 90s.
      
      I’ve known two people who were murdered and I’m guessing I’ve had associations with about eight murderers.
      
      If you ask me what has caused these men to murder I’d struggle to identify any common pattern.
      
      My belief is that is part nature but mostly nurture. I’ve known guys that have had such a shitty upbringing it would make you weep at what they went through as kids and who went on to repeat what they were taught – but also I’m pretty sure there are bad eggs born, when I think about those scumbags who had a normal upbringing and were just scumbags from the get go.
      
      From my experience, ethnicity has nothing to do with it – and, for the record, I have known plenty of pakehas who were the most rotten, raping, murdering, thieving, dishonourable, cheating, lying scumbags you’d ever had the displeasure of meeting.

        Teachers can point out kids who will become violent thugs at primary school. Much of it is innate, and unfixable psychopaths with poor impulse control are born that way. In Coromandel a few years back there was a primary kid so nasty, violent and out of control that he needed a full time minder in school, and a large group of parents banded together to bus their kids 1hr to Thames every day to keep away from him.

        I was talking to someone from Corrections who some time back did a study involving interviewing hardened criminals. The overwhelming common feature was that most had experienced child abuse growing up. While not every kid who experiences this will become a criminal, if the child has no support they are going to suffer one way or another unless they are lucky and get help. Of course some of those guys will be living in the same communities as adults and can’t escape it. Very sad.

    Au contraire; in New Zealand, ‘Ethnicity’ is very much the issue, given the well-known and well-documented inclination for one specific ethnic group to commit such violent crimes.
    
    Such is that group’s proclivity for such matters, and the frequency with which they are involved in such things, an enquiry about the ‘ethnicity’ of the suspect is quite natural, if only to confirm or deny reasonably held suspicions.

  The fact is that most cultures on this planet are male-dominated and males are brought up to expect females to obey and submit to them, or suffer the (violent) consequences.
  It’s only mainly in the West that males are taught to respect women.
  That’s why most bashing and killings of females are disproportionately committed by non-western males.

For a start two or 3 parties will dilute their own vote and one or all of them will need to get to 5% to give just one seat to National.
Act and The Conservative Party both failed last time (due to their leadership)
But I think its an impossible ask to get a new right wing party to 5%.

These three scientists have made a conscious decision and effort to reduce their “carbon footprint” and have reduced the number of miles they fly per year – two have gone from 100,000 miles per year to 30,000 and one has cut out flying completely.

Irrespective of whether you believe the hype around so-called “climate change”, at least these three have actually put their money where their mouths are and made an effort to fix up their own house first – not just preach to us about how WE all need to change.

And this is why I refuse to take the hand-wringing by James Shaw et al seriously.

If he HONESTLY believed the world is as doomed as he claims, then I would have expected him to stop flying all over the damn world. Surely, if Mr Shaw believes that climate change is the greatest evil we have in the world, right now, he would have:

– refused to fly all the way to Katowice, Poland, for a conference on climate change.
– refused to fly to Scott Base in November (said trip supposedly to help him understand the importance of New Zealand’s Antarctic research around climate change. Here’s a tip Mr Shaw … you flying in there isn’t helping).
– turned down the chance to travel to California in September, just to present New Zealand’s plans for action on climate change.
– said “no” to the offer to attend a Climate Action Pacific Partnership conference in Suva in July
– apologised and said “the carbon footprint is just not worth it” instead of travelling to Singapore and China in July for climate change discussions with regional Ministerial counterparts

In fact, when you consider that the quarterly release for travel and accommodation from October 1 to the end of December last year showed that James Shaw spent $26,712 on international travel to Europe for climate-change meetings, it’s hard to believe that he really believes what he preaches at all. Or is the lure of the baubles of office just too great a temptation?

James Shaw – if you expect us to take you seriously when you tell us how terrible a problem we have with climate change, how about putting your money (or your perks) where your mouth is? Instead of jetting all over the world, try a video conference.

the name will be released in 3 weeks anyway, well before his trial.
I can understand it in sexual abuse cases.
But not for other cases.

  It’s really simple. Under NZ’s stupid judicial system anyone can apply for name suppression. If it’s rejected as in this case then they automatically get 20 days name suppression to give them time to appeal.
  
  So you get name suppression even if you don’t get name suppression.

The mawkish and theatrical outpouring over the death of Grace Millane has reached the level of hysteria. We even have the disgusting spectacle of Ardern putting on crocodile tears.

Young people are murdered all the time, but we seldom see this carry on. Why? Because Grace was an attractive blonde woman. It is not especially sad, tragic, or upsetting, just because its a pretty female.

Some are even going the way of Saudi Arabia and blaming Grace for doing what most red blooded women do and going to some guys place.

Most murder victims are male. Of that group of men, Maori are over represented. Yet we never see this sort of beat-up for men.

People have lost their minds. They are gibbering about the murder rate increasing while it is lower than it has been in 40 years !

So cut the crap and look at the facts:

  Have you ever seen the dump Swifty? Many years ago I got roped in to make up a pool/darts team to travel over the Rimutakas to visit the Fitzroy Tavern.
  
  There was an almost continuous brawl going on in the carpark. Rumour had it that at midnight a twenty minute truce would be held to give St John’s time to remove the dead & injured but we didn’t stick around.

I mailed some Christmas cards to Japan yesterday. They cost $3 each. This is some 8% more than a year ago when they cost around $2.80
To post a card to NZ from Japan cost 110 yen ($NZ1.40), which is what is cost some 20 years ago.

I can see that I’ll be sending electronic cards (tacky) out to Japan next Christmas.

      Mrs Nasska is more anti religion than I GoVege. As an 8YO kid she was molested by a neighbour who was an elder in a local church. No one would lift a finger against the arsehole until her estranged father came up from the South Island & put the deviant in hospital for a few months.
