Anticipating a fifth straight weekend of violent protests, France’s president on Friday called for calm and the Paris police chief warned that armored vehicles and thousands of officers will be deployed again in the French capital.

Police chief Michel Delpuech told RTL radio that security services intend to deploy Saturday in the same numbers as last weekend, with about 8,000 officers and 14 armored vehicles protecting the streets of Paris during a planned anti-government protest by the yellow vest movement.

Two seemingly unrelated items on Fox news today – Californian legislators are wanting to tax text messages

– Apple are going to open a $1 billion facility in Texas that will have 10,000 employees.

Why isn’t Apple investing more in San Francisco, California? California is taxing more and more even including text messages!

This is the trouble with liberal high tax economies. Eventually they drive out even the liberal high tech companies like Apple. Texas has lower taxes and less regulation, the opposite of California.

This is what will happen to NZ if we follow on the California path of high tax, excessive regulation and a tax on everything. Businesses will not locate here. Existing businesses will leave NZ and relocate somewhere with lower taxes and lighter regulation.

      Since the anti strangulation clause in the Crimes Act came into force on Monday. 29 men have been charged under this piece of legislation.
      
      Excuse, is there something I’m not getting?
      
      I thought putting your hands around someone’s neck to strangle them was already an offence ranging from
      
      Assault, serious assault, manslaughter, or murder depending on the outcome and intent.
      
      Why do we need legislation that is so specific that the mere hint of a technicality will have some violent moron walk free with the right legal advice and weak judge?

        Strangulation is to be made a specific crime after a recommendation by the Law Commission that has been welcomed by Justice Minister Amy Adams.
        
        Ms Adams said strangulation was “an abhorrent act”, that was a deeply personal and intimidating form of violence.
        
        “In a domestic violence context, it’s more than just a physical attack and can have a devastating and long-lasting psychological impact on victims,” Ms Adams said.
        
        Family violence victims who have been strangled previously are seven times more likely to end up being killed than those who have suffered other non-strangulation forms of violence.

        2. All the words about violence against women & strangulation are BS. Violence, strangulation etc against anybody is violence irrespective of gender or cause.
        3. All violence should be treated with equal weight of the law.

      ……and the young father in Christchurch….stabbed to death….news on this gone in a day or so….if women want to be safe….then they need to engage in behaviour that keeps them safe….(not blaming the victim)….but meeting someone for the first time….drinking…..flirting etc is fine….but then going to a strange mans apartment/hotel room is risky behaviour….instead of male bashing the media could perhaps talk about safety with regards to dating apps…..I have a number of young female clientele who use dating apps …as it is how you meet someone in today’s world apparently….but they have rules and boundaries that go something like this…..swipe right for like….then message chats for about a week….then actual phone calls for at least another week (apparently the losers drop off quick)….then it is a coffee in a public place in broad daylight….for the first date…..

Despite Judge Evangelos Thomas refusing to grant the application, the man’s lawyer, Ian Brookie, indicated he would appeal the decision to the High Court, which invokes an automatic 20-working-day suppression order.

I take it from this report that Judge Evangelos Thomas did not see naming the man as jeopardising the judicial process.

And it would seem another group of prominent New Zealanders see no problem in their timing –

In an open letter, more than 40 women including Helen Clark and Dame Jenny Shipley, former governor-general Dame Silvia Cartwright, business leaders Theresa Gattung, Joan Withers and Dame Trelise Cooper, along with stars from the arts, science and media, call on men and the Government to make changes in the wake of English backpacker Grace Millane’s death.

Can Andrew Little explain how this action is at the moment acceptable, with its potential to focus the nation’s horror on the perpetrator of this crime, and likely influencing a possible juror somewhat more negatively than just knowing the person’s name.

A name which is somewhat forgettable – since I came across it by accident yesterday (Googling an associated word, but not one I would have expected to include the man’s name in the Results, let alone any link) – and although I can now recall the first name, I can not remember the surname. It’s not very memorable or influencing.

But when was the last time – any time – that such importance was attached to a murder by other reports?

  However, it is not in question that the poor lass was murdered, and it is not in question that it would be preferable if women did not have to go in fear of their lives for exercising freedom.         That was when a person died in an Auckland house from wjocj the power company had cut off the electricity, I think over some sort of billing foul up.

      Before an arrest had been made there were people on here convinced that it must have been an immigrant what done it, and practically salivating at the thought that at last their anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim rhetoric would be supportable by reference to an actual example. Once the arrest had been made, there were people on here convinced that the fact that we were not being told about the accused’s ethnicity, must mean that he was an immigrant or maybe a Maori. Now that it seems he’s neither, we are objecting to the same conclusions and accusations being leveled at all white males as we daily level, with no more justification, at all non-white males.
      
      In any case I haven’t seen anything focused specifically on /white/ males. Men in general, certainly, although it’s less clear what the ones who don’t murder women are supposed to do other than carry on not murdering women. There may well be a constructive and profitable conversation to be had about that, but it won’t happen unless people start listening carefully and thoughtfully to each other and also listening honestly to themselves.

    The whole facts of the supposed murder are all in question. No plea has been entered and no evidence offered in Court. Murder has not been publicly established only suspicions and allegations. Meanwhile a suspect is held in custody on spec pending a call over while Police sort out how they can make a case.

Maori commits crime: Maori are criminals. White man commits crime: That particular man should be duly punished, but also women should be more careful.

      Why should everyone else be responsible for female safety? They want to have the freedom to go wherever they wish, and behave as freely as they desire, but everyone else (especially men) should concentrate on THEM, and their welfare!
      The vast majority of men and women of all ages go about their lives without fearing for their safety, having learnt from experience, but there will always be some who fail the self preservation test.
      And there are some who follow their best instincts, and still die, because we are all fallible, and cannot always interpret other peoples’ intentions and motivations.

      Albert Ross. I was brought up to show respect in every way to women- to open car doors, to walk on the traffic side of the street, to stand when a woman entered a room and so on. I have never struck a woman and have rarely used abusive language to a woman. My behaviour has been scoffed at by a generation of women who don’t want me to show that type of respect. Called in to Ashburton gardens yesterday and found the advertised multicultural garden. It was just a small patch of geraniums. I think they spent more on signs than on plants. Later I expect they will have a bed of pansies with some of the anthers snipped off. And next spring perhaps a show of part-black tulips.

    A bit of bleeding cleans the wound, and starts the healing process. I have Steristrips and clear Telfa dressings at home because I quite often get cuts and skin tears working around my garden. The secret is to clean the site and cover it immediately, before it can get infected. Depending on the site of the injury you may not need to use a dressing.
    Mop away the spare blood, and when the skin around is dry, use the steristrips to put the cut skin together, or hold it over the skinned place. Then put a clear Telfa over the whole, covering the steristrips if its an are that might get dirty. Apply a bit of tension to help hold the skin edges together.
    You can leave the dressing on for over a week – or until it gets too unsightly (just replace). It will stay on in the shower and you can see how its healing. 5-6 days should see it healed enough to stop dressing.

Cooper sent dozens of messages and sexually explicit images to girls over Facebook between January 2016 and November 2017, the court heard. He offered two teenagers hundreds of dollars for sex, but they declined his advances.

“Over a period of nearly two years you persistently preyed on a large number of underage females using social media,” Judge Meryl Sexton said. “The internet makes it all too easy for sexually deviant people like you to access girls for your own sexual gratification. Further, you followed through with personal contact with three of them, who were not emotionally or socially mature enough to realise the danger they were placing themselves in.” Judge Sexton said Cooper, who lied about his age, had sought to take sexual advantage of the teenagers.

He was arrested in August last year, after meeting up with two 15-year-old girls in NSW, taking them to a motel and then to his home in Victoria. They were discovered in Cooper’s van by his mother while he was at work and the girls later contacted their families, who alerted police. At the time of his offending Cooper was on the sex offenders’ register after a 2009 conviction for sexual activity with a child and was required to report contact with anyone underage.

I posted this on another blog earlier this morning and it has generated a lot of supportive comment. I share it here as it may find similar support.

Here is a theory: once upon a time women expected to be treated with courtesy. Responsible parents taught their sons how to behave towards women. But the growing ‘feminist’ mantra that maintains women are equal and it is offensive to do things like open a door, let them go first, offer assistance and so on is simply destroying a standard of behaviour that was once considered normal. And it is because women insist they do not need special consideration. Feminists – ask yourselves whether your equality expectations have had a big part in the (perceived) breakdown of mens’ behaviour towards you.

  At first glance that’s surprising, Secondcumming. I hope you are correct about the brand you name, because it could cause the firm problems.
  
  China imports wheat, but apparently it has built a huge stockpile, and is even exporting flour to Canada, which unlike NZ, is a big wheat exporter. However, the flour to Canada is for dumplings, presumably for Western Canada’s Chinese.
  
  Two years ago, the United States Department of Agriculture estimated China’s wheat stocks at 111.6 million tonnes, or about 44 percent of total world stocks.
  
  If Chinese flour is going into NZ bread, it will likely be coming from China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation, which has its own office in Canada, and says it is following China Government policy to reduce the national wheat stockpile.
  
  Meanwhile, China continues to import wheat – $NZ90.5 million worth in October alone.
  
  China’s economy is wacky – half communist, half capitalist. How can China economically import wheat and export flour? Milling is a very low-labour business, and capital costs of flour mills aren’t high by today’s standards.
  
  However, New Zealand bakers using Chinese flour might get a surprising emotional backlash from consumers. Place of origin is a big selling point in a country with high food standards, such as New Zealand.

I figure that she would be too small to move the metal frame of the machine. I don’t think she was playing on it and then fell off and hit her head (the frame is not that high off the grass).

What might have happended is that other (likely unsupervised) children raised one end of the framework or upended it so that it was balancing precariously, and the little girl got caught underneath it (like a mouse in a mousetrap). I am only guessing.

I used to see this kind of thing a lot at a local park where the adults would be way over in one corner of the park, and the older kids (all under 12) would be with the toddlers and preschoolers as they thrashed the heavy swing seats around. If one of the little kids were to walk into the path of the swing, they would have been brained. Again, no sign of adult supervision.

Peugeot closed its Ryton (was Rootes Group) plant and moved production to Slovakia with EU grant.
British Army’s new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.
Dyson gone to Malaysia, with an EU loan.
Crown Closures, Bournemouth (Was METAL BOX), gone to Poland with EU grant, once employed 1,200.
M&S manufacturing gone to far east with EU loan.
Hornby models gone. In fact all toys and models now gone from UK along with the patents all with with EU grants.
Gillette gone to eastern Europe with EU grant.
Texas Instruments Greenock gone to Germany with EU grant.
Indesit at Bodelwyddan Wales gone with EU grant.
Sekisui Alveo said production at its Merthyr Tydfil Industrial Park foam plant will relocate production to Roermond in the Netherlands, with EU funding.
Hoover Merthyr factory moved out of UK to Czech Republic and the Far East by Italian company Candy with EU backing.
ICI integration into Holland’s AkzoNobel with EU bank loan and within days of the merger, several factories in the UK, were closed, eliminating 3,500 jobs
Boots sold to Italians Stefano Pessina who have based their HQ in Switzerland to avoid tax to the tune of £80 million a year, using an EU loan for the purchase.
JDS Uniphase run by two Dutch men, bought up companies in the UK with £20 million in EU ‘regeneration’ grants, created a pollution nightmare and just closed it all down leaving 1,200 out of work and an environmental clean-up paid for by the UK tax-payer. They also raided the pension fund and drained it dry.
UK airports are owned by a Spanish company.
Scottish Power is owned by a Spanish company.
Most London buses are run by Spanish and German companies.
The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to be built by French company EDF, part owned by the French government, using cheap Chinese steel that has catastrophically failed in other nuclear installations. Now EDF say the costs will be double or more and it will be very late even if it does come online.
Swindon was once our producer of rail locomotives and rolling stock. Not any more, it’s Bombardier in Derby and due to their losses in the aviation market, that could see the end of the British railways manufacturing altogether even though Bombardier had EU grants to keep Derby going which they diverted to their loss-making aviation side in Canada.
39% of British invention patents have been passed to foreign companies, many of them in the EU
The Mini cars that Cameron stood in front of as an example of British engineering, are built by BMW mostly in Holland and Austria. His campaign bus was made in Germany even though we have Plaxton, Optare, Bluebird, Dennis etc., in the UK. The bicycle for the Greens was made in the far east, not by Raleigh UK but then they are probably going to move to the Netherlands too as they have said recently.

Anyone who thinks the EU is good for British industry or any other business simply hasn’t paid attention to what has been systematically asset-stripped from the UK. Name me one major technology company still running in the UK, I used to contract out to many, then the work just dried up as they were sold off to companies from France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc., and now we don’t even teach electronic technology for technicians any more, due to EU regulations.

I haven’t detailed our non-existent fishing industry the EU paid to destroy, nor the farmers being paid NOT to produce food they could sell for more than they get paid to do nothing, don’t even go there.
I haven’t mentioned what it costs us to be asset-stripped like this, nor have I mentioned immigration, nor the risk to our security if control of our armed forces is passed to Brussels or Germany.

Find something that’s gone the other way, I’ve looked and I just can’t. If you think the EU is a good idea,
1/ You haven’t read the party manifesto of The European Peoples’ Party.
2/ You haven’t had to deal with EU petty bureaucracy tearing your business down.
3/ You don’t think it matters.

OUT OF EUROPE we need to be out of it

  This is wonderful news, now the Republicans can work to reform the US healthcare system which is in dire need of overhauling, if that ruling didn’t happen, they wouldn’t as easily attract swing voters that easily for 2020, since healthcare is a major topic in the US.
  It’s up for the Republicans to come up with something decent to lower healthcare costs, not sure what or how exactly, as long as they don’t screw it up.
