I am a curnudgeon at the best of times, but sometimes The Herald does things beyond belief. They gave NZer of the year to a woman killed by her own stupidity.

I am sorry she died, but she was not a hero. She was swimming in a place where they knew it would flood. That was why they went there. There are lots of warning signs everywhere. They had to climb over safety barriers to get to the rock. The article makes no mention of any of this. The young adults put themselves in the path of danger for bravado and got it wrong.
The coroner might have called her brave, but that is more a reflection on their lack of intellectual horsepower than anything else.

    Way way back I went to that place because there’s an elevated lookout from which you can safely view the once-daily (if I remember right) opening of the sluice-gates.
    
    Quite a popular tourist attraction.
    
    What I remember was:
    
    1. The LONG and LOUD siren that sounded to warn anyone who was about (that couldn’t read the LARGE and VIVID signage) to get their butts out of the vicinity
    2. The sheer power of the water surge
    
    I think of that experience every time I see footage of a tsunami wave.
    
    Frightening.

      I grew up 20 mins from the Aratiatia Dam. It was known as the “Aratiatia rapids”. No way we would swim there when there’s dozens of other lakes and swimming holes close by [beware the giant eels] … think Arapuni (Jones’ landing in particular), Atiamuri, Mangakino, Rotoma… etc.
      
      I mourn the loss of this woman’s life, and wish her family the best they can do, moving forward without her. I am so sorry.
      
      NZ Herald needs to do better supporting excellent people that have given back to NZ as “person of the year” and not get into this area where they can be accused of e.g. “PC sob stories”.
      
      And again, my deepest sympathies to the young woman’s parents for being caught up in what is little more than a political exercise in virtue signaling. I’m sure their daughter was a vibrant and strong young woman with so much to offer us all, but her memory ought not to be used in this way.
      
      Just a free opinion, and those are worth what you pay for them.

Bloody Salvation Army are just another bludging religious band of nutters. Last night on TV news, they were saying that the demand for support this year has been the worst ever. That there are thousands of children living in poverdy here in NZ. The very next item on the news was the devastation caused by the Tsunami in Indonesia. If you want to feel sorry for anyone, it’s got to be the survivors of this event.
Here in NZ, if any child is living in poverdy, it is because their parents are guilty of child neglect. We, the long suffering taxpayers, are paying more than enough to support these bludgers to providing the basics required to look after them and their kids. The fact that they spend this support on their own selfish needs instead of putting their kids needs first, is the real problem that needs fixing. Just throwing more and more cash at them is not the answer.

    Many years ago we inherited a house full of furniture. We checked with family for needs/wants and then donated the lot to the SA on the specific understanding (in writing) that the furniture would be given , FOC, to families in need.
    Two weeks later the SA had our entire donation to those in need for sale to the public via their shop.
    Every time they wave their donation boxes at me or the family they are now told : Get stuffed!
    And why!

      Your condition was unreasonable, burdensome and an ineffective way of helping families in need. It would have been difficult and time consuming for the Sallies to find a poor and deserving family who actually needed/had the space appropriate for that particular furniture, more than they needed (eg) money for school uniforms, shoes, food, heating etc. Converting the furniture into money would have been an efficient way of enabling the Sallies to provide help that was actually needed by the recipient, as opposed to providing you with a free and easy house clearance, and they would have been right to prioritize the former.

        I stopped supporting the twats after I worked in the same building as them and they repeatedly got my car towed. I then donated some furniture to them which was fully functional furniture but wasn’t the prettiest looking and the refused to take it saying they wouldn’t get much money selling it.

  holysheet and I would say the Salvation Army will find it even harder to raise funds over the next few years as a lot of the large donors have pulled their donations because of the interference by SA in politics. A lot of older people used to swear by the Salvation Army because their parents did so before them, but now they are politically active they are losing support in the droves and deservingly so.

  Before you criticise them ask yourself what are you doing for the poor? Indeed what are you doing for anyone else?
  
  This year are you giving? This year are you helping? Are you giving up anything to help others?
  The salvation army officer gives his or her whole life to help others. They get paid a tiny amount and they live in basic housing. They are told to move by the hierarchy and they go.
  
  So they do a lot of good and think about that before you display what can only be describe as religious bigotry.

        …..and our family donates to the Hospice movement for the very same reason G152. Hospices across the country are staffed by a mix of dedicated salaried professionals supported by selfless and hardworking volunteers and administered by professional boards. All of us (rich and poor) may need their services which are provided not only to the dying but to their families as well. We donate our time and money to Hospice knowing full well that they have no political axe to grind and that our donations are utilised very wisely. Hospice is all about compassion.

    The blurred line between church, their missions, shops/business and social agencies leaves plenty of scope for questions

      Don’t agree with the salvation army political views. However the salvation army officers I know give their whole lives to helping the poor. They are paid very low wages and live in basic housing.
      
      Kiwiblog contributors need to realise that the salvation army is one of the few organisations that work with the poorest of people, the drug addicts, the homeless, who everybody else shuns.
      
      I have never met a salvation army officer living the High life. I have met many living lives of selfless devotion.
      
      The criticisms I cannot reconcile with the army officers I know.

        Everybody works with those people, Presbyterian Social Support Services, the various City Missions up and down the country, the Budgeting Services up and down the country, Lifeline, the Drug and Alcohol Centres up and down the country, Family Planning, Maori Authorities, Marae up and down the country, Women’s Refuge not to mention our cradle to the grave welfare system, Dept. of Corrections and hospitals that we all pay huge amounts in tax for and that are provided to the end user for free.     My experience of ‘charities’ is that they are largely set up to be charitable to themselves.
    
    I had to Google: this is from The New Zealand Herald on March 4 2012:
    
    ‘A private company which collects money door-to-door for some of our best-known charities keeps the entire first year’s takings from some donors.
    The Appco Group’s own documents contain a pricing schedule of charges for collecting door-to-door for its charity clients, including WWF and Barnardo’s. It shows that if donors agree to pay $20 a month, APPCO takes 100 per cent in the first year – all $240.
    Face-to-face marketing has developed as a growth area in New Zealand. Members of the Professional Fundraising Association collected $28 million from 44,000 people last year.
    APPCO’s “tiered fee model” earns it a lower percentage for higher donations: when donors sign up to give $30 a month, it keeps $306 (85 per cent) of the first year’s $360; at the $60-a-month level, it keeps $504 (70 per cent) of the $720 donated.
    The Professional Fundraising Association stipulates that the cost of signing up a new donor should not be more than 20 per cent of the average rate of donation. Fundraising Institute of New Zealand chief executive James Austin said Appco’s fee schedule was designed on the basis that most people who signed up to charities gave for five years. The company’s 100 per cent take in the first year was within the rules on the basis donors stayed for five years.
    “That’s very legitimate and very accurate,” he said. “Most people still have this belief charities should be voluntary and no one should be paid to be a fundraiser, that people shouldn’t be paid to ask for money. It is a total bloody nonsense.”
    Appco Group’s NZ manager Sarah Ibbs refused to be interviewed about its charges. In a written statement, she said professional fundraising gave charities an effective “return on investment” and donors stayed for a number of years. “It is public knowledge that Appco is paid and so are the fundraisers.”
    The Appco documents also set out a schedule of fees for managing a “regular giving database”. It told charities it could pull in $1,719,000 a year if it signed up 5000 donors.
    After that, it would charge a “marketing fee … needed per year to maintain the donor base” of $244,715.
    Barnardo’s doesn’t mention Appco on its website, refused an interview about the company and would not reveal how much it paid it for fundraising. Acting chief executive Niamh Lawless said in a statement: “We pay a one-off, flat fee to Appco for face-to-face fundraising, leaving the majority of the funds raised to go to supporting service delivery.”’
    
    Yeah, right.
    
    Throw in the fact that, more and more, ‘charities’ are becoming political – your Sallies and Barnados as above, Greenpeace, Forest & Bird et al – and you will forgive me if I tell you I now restrict my charitable contributions to Poppy Day and Daffodil Day.

        Last year and this one I have started donating to a couple or so of charities which seem to be good IMO but whar pissed me off was getting the next begging letter in the same mail drop as the receipt for my previous donation … urrgh!

    Correction there Scott on their ‘humbleness’, as I know of one Sallies couple who own a rental in a rural town. The tenants keep the property like a weed factory and partake, I am told, in various drugs. The Army’s second hand outlets are known for the high prices they charge, even though they are mainly staffed by volunteers. I suspect as an organisation they got political so they can suck on government funding.

  I want to start a campaign where I sit outside a foodbank and count the number of children going in with the parent. Then reporting weekly on the average family size on welfare over time. Let’s start a political party called “two and out”, where any third or more child is discouraged through a ceiling on benefits or decreasing subsidies for that child. We would of course insist on free implant contraception being available for all women as part of this policy.

  The Salvation Army is a deeply political organisation with a strong Left-wing political agenda.
  
  It is NOT as it tries to portray itself a politically impartial Christian church/ charity out in the community trying to do good deeds by supporting those less fortunate and to spread the news of Christ.
  
  Twice in my lifetime, it has directly involved itself in the political processes of this country. Once over Homosexual Law Reform and now over “Poverty”. And in the latter case, it is aided and abetted in that cause by the Left-wing controlled news media of this country with its bearly hidden Marxist-Leninist agenda.
  
  The Salvation Army is no different to or more impartial than any of the other so-called charities that are in truth little more than fronts for advancing Left-wing politics, e.g., Greenpeace, Oxfam, Forrest and Bird etc.
  
  And it is really important that anyone on the Right fundamentally understands that. And like Greenpeace, it too should probably be stripped of its tax-free charity status.
  
  So over the next 18 months the Left and its tool the media is going to build this notion of poverty into a deafening crescendo to support the governments aim to bring in a CGT as the fairest and most appropriate thing to fix poverty the country can do. And those who are against it will be branded as little more than enemies of the people.
  
  Make no mistake there are interests and forces afoot in this country who are fighting very hard to force the country to take a hard turn to the far-Left and keep it there. And are the Right going to do anything about it or are they going to roll over like the pussies they are?

It’s been argued over many times over the decades by those who firmly say it is, and by those who equally firmly say it isn’t. You can take your pick. Most people will probably take whatever side their pre-existing Left/ Right worldview is.
      
      For me, the fact that in Communist countries Christianity was (and is) viciously suppressed causes me to take the view that Left-wing values and Christian values have little if anything in common with each other except superficially.

    Aunty – the picture is not as clear as you would suggest. The salvation army spoke against the homosexual law reform of 1986. It was not advocating a left wing position but rather the traditional Conservative position on marriage and sexuality.
    
    The organisation does bid for social contracts but is able to win many contracts because of the low renumeration it pays its officers and the big volunteer component which keeps costs down.
    Unfortunately it has gone more left wing as society and the ruling class has got more left wing.
    But it still does excellent work and the animus against it shown by my fellow kiwi bloggers appals me quite frankly.

      I think you’re conflating the two, Homosexual Law Reform with the Army’s left-wing political stance in my post which was not my intention.
      
      I agree that these are entirely separate from a moral or economic point of view. My point in raising them was to show that the Salvation Army is a political entity and that it has no hesitation in engaging in politics to advance its worldview when it wants to. And those examples are the evidence for that.
      
      Yes, the Army does do good work, but the criticism of it is justified and largely correct. No institution is above criticism or critique, and the Salvation Army is no exception. It has become more Left-wing and political over the years and I believe that that is starting to endanger its good works as it is going to be turning people off.
      
      It needs to make its mind up about what it is and what it wants to be. A Church/ Charity that helps the less advantaged and troubled in society or a politically active ginger group pushing a Left-wing agenda.

        Regarding homosexual law reform the salvation army in 1986 was against it because of its adherence to basic Christian morality. Christianity is against homosexuality because of what the Bible says.
        The salvation army was quite right to rail against homosexual liberalisation in 1986. If you are working with families then it’s important to lobby for things you believe will help families. Families being mom and dad and the kids. It is entirely within the army’s purview to say that the homosexual agenda is detrimental to family values.
        
        Indeed today no politician gives a toss about traditional marriage. The only thing they care about is homosexual marriage.
        
        So traditional marriage is declining, consequently families are getting weaker. Consequently there are more social problems including poverty and fatherlessness and depression. All these things are quite within the purview of the salvation army to comment on. And none of these things are particularly political or even left wing.

While the logic may be that fundamental change and prevention is better than a cure or a band-aid, organisational self-preservation instinct means that this group will never be satisfied with whatever is achieved. They have been operating since 2003. Wonder what their budget is and how much their budget has grown since 2003. And what their annual objectives and achievement score cards looks like.
  
  I refuse to donate anything to organisations who do not report such key metrics–which is unfortunately most of them. To ensure that the cost of collecting and delivering my donations is zero — I simply annually take a huge load of groceries and gifts and dump it directly at the local community center that does collections. Or a direct cash donation to hospices etc. I refuse to give them any of my personal details.

The problems with the Opal Towers building in Sydney have generated some wider discussion in Australia, and a little here as well. (The builders are constructing a very high profile apartment tower in Auckland, and I expect it will be getting plenty of scrutiny from inspectors. Now.)

The author of the Sydney Morning Herald article at the below link may not be 100% objective (as from a waterproofing company) but still raises some very concerning and much wider issues about structural deficiencies under the headline ”Developers cutting costs are root cause of defects”.

Specifically, the article refers to a problematic design-and-construct approach that might not be used here anyway, I don’t know –

…. the wide use of design-and-construct contracts to commission many high-rise projects. These contracts, which supply builders with the first half of the design (which builders then have to finish) are often the first stop for developers looking to reduce cost and time of a project. The builder then takes responsibility for the design, however inadequate, and has to meet the developer’s budget and time restrictions, however inadequate, and manage further tweaking of key design elements by the developer to cut costs even more.”

Where are the NZ investigative journalists when we need them. Might have to see if the always reliable Ms Collins asks a lot of questions in the House.

  Plenty of “design and build” contracts in NZ, either for parts such as air conditioning or the whole building. With good scoping documents, realistic budgets and good contractors it can work ok for simple projects. None of these requirements are common in the NZ building industry and of course, fly by night developers mean there is very little chance of success.

I’ve been thinking about the constant reports we are getting about the growing number in poverty in NZ. Why is this never tackled at source? Why are there not concerted pushes to get the children of the poor educated… that’s the way out and another concerted push for the low income people to limit their families. It is all too easy to be poor in NZ. For many it is the easy option, just lie about all day, draw the benefit and breed. Our current policies simply do not help. The other thing that is constantly overlooked is human nature, if you give away free stuff people will come. I don’t believe for one minute that the increased demand for food parcels and free Christmas lunches comes entirely from need. I give as generously as I can to other charities, hospice, cancer research, Fred Hollows etc, but not to poverty causes.

  Bill English had this in his sights. He had the facts and figures and was intending to tackle neglect and poor choices at the source with targetted funding and wrap around services. The CoL take the easy route of ‘no judgement’ on anyone who applies for a handout from the taxpayer. Hence the growing numbers climbing on board for state funding housing, WINZ loans and the call for more and more funding for the basic benefits.
  If National had been in power this policy would have been well in hand instead of the free-for-all largess that is becoming a growing problem.

    If only the Salvation Army supported Bill English’s Social Investment initiative and worked with National’s plans they would have genuinely made a difference to eradicating the root causes of poverty long term. The key finding from the data analysis done was that there were relatively small number of troubled kids, genuinely poverty stricken or dysfunctional families that were creating the greatest long term burden on the state. It also showed who were the bludgers.
    
    Instead Sallies prefer to apply band-aids while mouthing off on their lobbyist megaphones. And work with the no-questions asked, no-fault assistance proposed by the tooth fairy. Of course they would, because if there was meaningful long term improvements the Sallies would become less and less relevant.

  The left has absoludely no interest in lifting people out of poverty. The poor are their core constituency, so would be shooting themselves in the foot by doing so. This is why the left increase and remove barriers to welfare dependency. They need as many people addicted to welfare as possible and their policies are designed to do exactly this (law and order etc.). The only problem with this strategy is the people who avoid the welfare trap by educating themselves and working for a living. Envy soon kicks in and you hear terms like “Haves and Have Nots”. Their solution to this issue to increase taxes on those not on welfare. This has a breaking point.

Half asleep at 5am this morning and news had an item about a couple walking some track and complaining how there were two fees ,she was a kiwi , he was not.
They want to complain to the UN because they consider this is discrimination and all should pay the same.
Well FO people ,if we want to have a cheaper rate for kiwis we bloody will.
Other story was also about some agreement we had signed with the UN and how it should be binding.

A superb day here yesterday at Tindalls, best so far. I decided to put the boat in and go for an afternoon fish. I gave a mate of mine from the gun club a call to see if he’d like to come out. Since his wife left him, Liam lives with his mother at Torbay, so it’s not too far away. He said he’d promised his mum he’d clean his room, so he should be here about noon.

I suggested to the missus we put the boat in early to save a bit of time. Backed the trailer down the ramp with the trusty old International, and the Tristram 691 slid into the tide. I had the missus hold the bow rope while I took the tractor back up to the house. Told her it would be best to turn the boat around, as there was a slight chop with the incoming tide and I didn’t want to risk getting the Yammy 225 covered in salt water.

Just as I got back home, Liam phoned to say he was at the Whangaparaoa turn-off, and would be there in 15. I has a quick check at what was new on KB, and waited for him to arrive. Soon his big black Chevy truck roared into the driveway. For a moment there, I’d thought he’d brought his mother with him, but suddenly realised of course, the Chevy is left hand drive.

We made our way down to the beach. By this time the tide was really pushing in, and the poor missus was nearly up to her neck. I called to her to move in a bit so me and Liam could get on board. We climbed over the motor-well and I lowered the prop just into the water. The missus made her way along the starboard side hanging on to the deck to make sure the bow stayed pointing out. As she got around the back I told her to give us a good push out. As I looked around to wave goodbye, the silly bitch had fallen over. She appeared to be ok, so I gunned it out towards the open sea. We were up on the plane in no time

We’d only gone out about half a km, when I caught sight of some grey haired prick on a lime-green kayak, yelling out and signalling for us to slow down. Liam said, “Look at that ignorant old cunt”.

About 20 minutes later we were out at my secret fishing hole behind Tiri. The pik was set and we had the Rapala Jigs doing the business. I asked Liam what he’d been up to over the holidays. He was saying things had been fairly quiet, except for the week before Christmas when him and another of our mates from the gun club, got invited to a Charity Fundraiser in Epsom, for ‘Women Born Without Legs’. He said it was absolutely crawling with fanny.

  I watched a video last night on Christmas in the London area around Regent St. The camera operator just walked as a pedestrian and took in all the sights and sounds of London. The streets were copiously festooned with overhead Christmas decorations, and the shops equally so. I sighted only one footpath tramp and heard many languages spoken. The people were using phones to photograph the amazing sights and my wife recalled walking those very streets when she lived there. With our large TV it was almost like being there, but without the tired feet. One thing that did amaze us was almost all the pedestrians were slim, unlike the baby elephants that occupy our malls and high streets.

Enric Marco, 84, chaired the survivors’ association right through to the eve of this week’s 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen camp in Austria, but now says he never set foot in a Nazi camp.

A historian researching the Mauthausen anniversary used the opportunity to look into events at Flossenbuerg – and failed to find any trace of Mr Marco ever having been there.

Mr Marco has given hundreds of conferences in schools about his pretended experiences and wrote a biography called Memory of Hell in 1978.

He was also secretary general of the Communist CNT union and chairman of a pupil- parents federation.

Next person I’d like to see investigated is Moshe Peer and his tales of survival.

There is no simple way to address the issue of the poor. One way is to give to whoever and not penalize welfare. The other way is to be too tough and cause great hardship to those in genuine need.

I think Bill English had it about right with mentoring. That is the best way out in intergenerational welfare.

It Labour dumped first year uni fees paid for by the taxpayer and spent it on primary and secondary schools they would accomplish more.

They, of course, will not do so National should rather than just offer tax cuts.

I am confident that senior National MPs along with our host’s polling company will develop policies close to the election that will attract swinging voters.

  Sadly Chuck Bird all that hard work done by the government departments by staff finally working with a true purpose and goal will be forgotten. That was just one part of a very big solid plan to get the help to those who needed most in targeted manner. It was almost to the stage of one on one support for the seriously vulnerable struggling to make their way.
  The initial target was ECE where almost 100% were being enrolled getting them started in the right direction. Charter schools were proving the most effective education safety net for those falling out of the state system in the next age groups. Meanwhile there was a drive to get more off the benefit into the workforce only thwarted by resistance and bad habits making holding down a job a serious challenge for many. This is nothing new as so many families have stuck by their own to help instill good work habits for those who go through some growing work pains. It is others constant faith (the complete trust kind) and support that help them most even if it takes a brush with the law or a conviction to straighten them out.
  Sad indeed watching all that being unrivaled by more of the same that created this total mess with their past solutions. Yet again embedding the potential for so many unintended consequences. This time however the radical changes being rushed on command have the potential to fuel a fire that will compete with the eternal flame.

    Pinini, the fact is that in a democracy one party does not stay in power forever. Chris Finlayson was right when he said National dodged a bullet.
    
    The last time a party stayed in for 4 terms was the Holyoake government. There have also been very few 1 term governments.
    
    This government can be a one term government. If so National will almost certainly get more than one term. If that is the case it will be a lot easier to change things back than if Labour last 2 or 3 terms.

      There is no way I can say that Peters would have ever gone with National. However, I think he would up until he got caught claiming for more than he was entitled to with super.

A bloke inherits a parrot when his friend dies. But the parrot won’t stop swearing at him. Worse, the parrot is an anti-Semite. The bird calls him a dumb-fuck Jew, a Jewish cunt, and a bunch of other names.

The bloke tries everything to get the parrot to stop swearing at him and stop its racist smears.

Nothing works. He finally gets fed up and sticks the bird in the deep freeze. Even from in there, he hears him cussing him out and insulting the bloke’s religion.

Then the parrot falls silent.
