What imbecilic moron came up with the staggering figure of ~ $650,000.00 to remediate the stupid track going up To Te Mata Peak?

15.5 tonne earthmover plus operator $5-600 a day Gizzy prices
$1,000 delivery to site & pickup via low loader, probably get the machine out from the car park at the top after
Start at the bottom and back-fill all the way up. Re-sow with shitty grass and a few shrubs, one week at the very most. Consents not required.

It’s a fifty grand job. TVNZ One News didn’t even question the $650k. Why not?

BTW the track will be visible forever in certain light at certain angles. So the Maoris better get used to that. Last UK summer was a dry one and they were seeing earthworks the Romans made that were invisible previous.

      The track should have stayed – what private property owners do on their property is their business and no one elses.

    – Compensation.
    
    The real growth industries of that country.
    
    The real good one is “Compensation”, because you can be a winner both ways –
    
    – You get paid it, if someone proposes to do something to “your land”, and you get paid it if after much gnashing of teeth and fist shaking, the somebody decides not to do something with “you land”. After all, you have to be compensated for loss of potential future income that isn’t going to happen.
    
    Be warned, these are dangerous and dubious practices that result in economic development going nowhere.

Some New Year pundits are predicting a fall in house prices, or at least a flattening. The government seems to think that is a good thing, especially the Greens who have said publicly a 50% drop is needed. Of course that was easy to say in Opposition and their ‘policy’ has apparently been quietly dropped. (Or has it?)

The housing market is complex with many influencing factors and slogans don’t cut it IRL. If house prices do fall consider for example what happens to the construction industry. The price gap between new and existing increases, so demand for new drops. Construction falls, firms fail or exit the sector and possibly the country.

Still, if enough New Zealanders leave and net migration falls significantly any housing shortage could end right there. Though a shortage of workers, already a problem, could cause a downward cycle on several fronts.

As I say, complex. It is quite possible that Mr Twyford has control over the key levers and soon his slogans supporting the Number One 2017 election issue will be proved correct and he will be completely vindicated.

Or not.

  Per capita is where I rate GDP, but I hear “wellness”or “kindness” may be factored in. Would that mean the spare room may have to be rented out? 🙂

    Councils will still collect the same amount of money for not even the basics, so eventually a big catch up needed, so borrowings, and put the interest rate on rates too.
    
    Then plus what ever else for the vitality, multi, vibrancy, entertainment, stadium, swimming pools, living wage, plus stress factors for managers, executives, etc. 🙂
    
    Councils are relentless in pursuit of rates, no matter how much your home devalues, but then again they are very quick to put in inflationary costs too.

  The only way the housing market would crash to that degree would be when people start losing their jobs and can’t pay the mortgage. Banks force mortgagee sales and down it goes.
  
  Without outside pressure to burst bubble it will just stall and go sideways as people take their houses off the market and wait. If the Greens want a crash, nobody will be able to afford to buy houses except the government, which is probably the real plan.

        One (1) accident may produce no deaths or one (1).
        But the
        one (1) accident may also (could also) result in one, two or (how many?) more deaths. The chances a human death may be zero. But depending on where, when, and under what circumstances, that one accident could, by chance, produce (result in) …. well, name your number.
        This was realised way back in the Peter (Hiss and Roar) Gordon, Roy Polaschek, Barney Campbell transport era. It was the under-pinning principle (pre ACC driven interventions) of all efforts to improve road design.
        
        So politicians, Police and bureaucrats avoided the political “road toll” emphasis bullshit.
        
        Sadly, this idiot regime casts all that aside in favour of Greengenter’s crackpot theories.. Dumb, Vic!

      flipper it was Assoc Transport Minister JAG who chose to politicise the road toll a year ago. Said she would work on a road safety programme – a mantra taken up by NZTA, Auckland Transport, GWRC etc and they are going to spend $1.4bn on “road safety improvements”.
      
      As part of her programme funding would be moved from the RONS (which would help cut the road toll) to:
      1. unnecessary trams in Auckland;
      2. half arsed road safety features, that does not include fixing black spots like SH1 Warkworth to Waipu or SH2 Waihi to Tauranga.
      
      After her first 12 months what have we had:
      1, Lots of conference time and press conferences;
      2. $1.4bn to be spent over 3 years over the whole country; and
      3. The worst road toll in 10 years.
      
      JAG played politics and lost. Instead she bleated on about the problem taking 30 years to fix. When Judith Collins pointed out that JAG had politicised the issue of the road toll, JAG’s reaction was to retort that Collins was politicising the issue.
      
      It is a case of a woman who has an agenda that doesn’t work and her and her mates at MR Cagney (and take the Transport Blog) should pack up and go back to Brisbane.

    Such a sweeping statement indicates these very important issues will remain a mystery to them so expect the same process as welfare and child poverty. The scatter-gun money approach where the true cost will be substantially more than the rashly allocated funding.       5. They are coming up with policy, bills and doing work unlike labour in opposition which now has to have 1000 working groups to do their job for them.
      6. They have asked so many questions the ministers are complaining they need extra staff to handle all the questions.

        According to the web site linked to below, the name is originally Greek, in which it was spelled χλόη.
        
        This site says of Chloe:

        That’s not an umlaut, its a diaeresis – although the confusion is widespread. The name ‘Chloe’ is sometimes spelled with a diaeresis over the final e – e.g. the actresses Chloë Grace Moretz, or Chloë Sevigny.
        
        Putting the diaeresis over the o is rare but it does happen. In at least one case, Chlöe Howl, this is attributed to a mistake by her parents on her birth certificate. Presumably, like many people, they didn’t understand what the diaeresis does, and vaguely knew that there was, like, a German umlaut thingy in the name somewhere, and got it wrong. I would guess that Swarbrick’s parents may have made a similar mistake.

Who came up with that stupid ‘Bob Jones’ ad that keeps playing during the ad breaks in the cricket? I gather it is about the effects of alcohol the morning after (or is it about staying the night?) but it is so annoying that I reach for the remote to change channel each time it comes on. I know some of the most annoying ads are the most effective because you can’t forget them, but pray tell who the hell made this one? Probably some art school graduate who thinks they can reach the masses through their incredible creativity….talk about driving me to drink (am I missing the point?)

  When official unemployment is between 40% and 45% and there are vast numbers of the population on no official register of any kind living in real poverty (SLG take note what poverty is SA style), you can make the minimum wage whatever you like and the lives of the poor will not change.
  
  Although there is much wealth and new prosperity in centres like Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, the rest of the country is going backwards. Sadly, SA has many problems, with none of them are being addressed in a meaningful way because as in the rest of Africa, there is endemic criminality, corruption and incompetence throughout the country.
  
  So, making fatuous comparisons of the minimum wage in SA versus NZ is silly, as the economies and the nature of the society in each country is completely different.

The alarming thing is that in all probability, some time in the next few millennia, we can expect to return to ice age conditions that will last for about a hundred thousand years. The present interglacial has already lasted for about the average duration of the previous five interglacials. So, whether or not the current concern about global warming is justified, we need to be very concerned about climate change and the more we can understand about it, the better for the future of mankind. Maybe I am a bit optimistic here, but I think its not beyond the realms of possibility that, if we have a sufficient understanding of the mechanisms involved, and the timescales are in our favour, we may just be able to prevent the onset of a future impending ice age.”

    The best and only solution is to reduce the world population.
    Every new mouth will need food, heat and a car or tv.

    The most terrifying thing for me about Stuff’s shut-down of debate about ‘climate change’ is their absolute arrogance in assuming that anybody who doesn’t agree with them is a ‘denier’ and shouldn’t be allowed to be heard.
    
    I realise that Stuff is a business and as such they are not legally required to offer a forum for healthy debate. But it’s a terrible state of affairs when the news media take it upon themselves to be the de facto propaganda arm of the Green party and the socialists.

Is some sort of ‘decolonisation’ necessary to progress to a better Aotearoa? If so what does it actually mean?

It is a shame some NZ citizens of Maori descent appear to see traditional tikanga as almost set in stone and a ‘correct’ way to live. Treaty of Waitangi era British culture is totally dead, it has moved on to become something different. Those of us descended from those who signed the TOW can happily reject the race, gender and social norms of our British 1840 era culture. I am descended from people both sides of the TOW signing, why should I be expected to believe my Maori cultural heritage is worth preserving intact, while my British heritage is garbage? Both British and Maori 1840-style cultures are dead and gone for ever.

The truth is even the most radical Maori decolonialist is going to interpret this concept from a modern worldview. Female Maori academics do not want traditional tikanga gender roles restored. No one wants a return to tribal warfare. No one wants a very short life expectancy. In other words this debate is about modern race relations, not traditional culture. Personally I believe reducing this discussion to identity politics brings it into better perspective. Do I choose to identify as Maori due to a small percentage of Maori DNA? Or do I choose to identify as pakeha due to a small amount of English DNA? Or how about take the victim card to the next level, my majority DNA comes from Scotland, and man if my Maori ancestors think they had a hard time with my English ancestors, they should see what the English did to the Scots!!!!

Actually it’s time we all grew up, stopped finger pointing and realised we are all one people.

We are more or less ‘one people’, but with a wide variety of world views and ideas on how we can improve our society – even amongst Māori.

‘Decolonisation’ sounds to me like going backwards.

We need to acknowledge and understand our history better, but how we get to our future requires modern thinking, acceptance of diversity in our heritages, and finding ways of dealing with far better equality than both colonial and Māori social systems and power structures allowed.

  Don’t be so sure about that. Tikanga allows utu and the tribes still have scores to settle. Maori have not coalesced into one. That is why the Maori Party failed.

        Recently a building here in Wellington had some upgrades done and when the foundation on one side was excavated they discovered….no ring foundation in place.
        
        Lazy shit head builders are the problem, regardless of race.
        
        Watch a house construction in Auckland and see how quickly the big builders shoot the bottom pates after the boxing has been removed. Even an old fuck like me can pull the nails out so imagine the long term effect.

Ever read the Vagina Monologues?

Ostensibly about female self discovery. It’s an initiation in lesbianism as a substitute for male love by a generation that emasculated it and is maddened without it.

But it has a few telling excerpts.

One scene has a 12 year old groomed and then exploited by her 24 year old female teacher.

What is supposed to be a celebration is a brutal assault on women.

And this play I am supposed to fete. No, I won’t fete this play.

I get on well with women.

How wonderful it is to be moderated one’s entire life.

      Yes. The caring industry is not. Children’s homes kept them in solitary confinement as conditioning. Foster homes have revolving doors and so called social workers fresh out trade school have little knowledge of the world but enthusiasm for action. These displaced children tended to go on to adult institutionalisation (prison). Families may not be perfect but my view is that tearing children away from loving parents, no matter how poor we think they may be, can have worse outcomes than doing nothing. Severe ultra violence is very rare and the Polynesian “bash” is undesirable but a cultural norm which families manage. The forced separation and risk of long term institutional care can be much worse. The first situation provides a way into working adulthood the second into prison. Communities provide culture and the separated are in a community too with its norms and values. I have seen more than I would have wished to have seen and see little improvement over the years.

        My mother’s suicide note requested that my father place me and my brothers in the local Children’s home (Margaret Watt Children’s home, Wanganui).
        
        He didn’t.
        We are grateful for his decision to care for us as best he could.
        I was sent to Friends School as a Boarder for a couple of years. It probably cost more than he could afford, but it was a safe caring place for a young child.

“The fence is an easy thing to sell politically,” Mr. Mulvaney said then. “It’s an easy thing for someone who doesn’t follow the issue very closely to say, ‘Oh, well, that will just solve everything, build the fence.’ The fence doesn’t solve the problem.”

Seeing as I am 67 this year I can not work too much coz the rules say 70 cents in the dollar TAX. Fuck you lot. Buying US dollars just on the quiet.

Don’t get me wrong. Despite all my apparent vitriol it hurts quite badly to see how the female psyche and nature has been deliberately fractured, segmented and weaponised.

So women who succeed under the current criteria for feminity still often feel at the core a deep sense of unfulfillment and unhappiness. Help, please. I have been researching ACT in more detail as I find myself reasonably aligned with their policies. I’ll read them in more depth when I’m nack behind a proper computer.

But I see they are classified as far right, alongside Neo-Nazis, etc. Is that correct?

Fundamentally, it doesn’t matter much – liberal, small government policy is good policy from where I am sitting, but still a bit curious.
