  Brilliant 9am no 2 into town. 34 mins to Cuba St, did the eyes appt, bought clothes, looked at street art had a wander, funny how town looks different from the street.
  Back to Miramar and a good coffee at Bongusto, bought a book for the other half at Sallies, read the paper through!
  Then home on next bus, all very easy.
  
  The traffic into town looked horrendous coming into town, the Haitaitai tunnel makes all the difference.
  Hopefully the clowns at GWMG can actually sort the transport out.
  If we could get a bus every 20 mins to and from 8am till 11pm, we’d only have 1 car.
  Not sure how the other routes rate….
  
  NOTE: The driver had nowhere to put his bag (behind/above/infront, so it lay blocking 50% of the walk in past him.
  One elderly Chinese man moved it to get round but the driver just put it back.
  
  Stagecoach need to sort that as it’s a health and safety problem of their making. I’m sure all the drivers have a little bag like that.
  
  This is the third Sat am going to town, so far been great. No 2 seems ok, now to try it during work hours.

    And the really perverse thing? The CoL have specifically designed the system so that those without a firearms license, ie the current law breakers, who hold these weapons will not be paid under the buyback. So what are these people going to do – well of course they’ll hold on to them.
    
    Yes, that’s right! This scheme confiscates firearms from the law-abiding but deliberately leaves the now-unlawful weapons in the hands of the criminals!
    
    And all of this is going to cost every NZer, man, woman and child, close to $100!

  Catriona MacLennan, lawyer has some very interesting comments on this on Spinoff.
  She argued there were differing justice standards for the rich and influential versus the poor and she does have a point here.
  If a bank staffer stole money from the local branch, the bank would ensure the staffer faced the full force of the law. A prison term would probably ensue. The bank could take a more lenient stance such as accepting the staffer’s resignation, arranging partial payment, etc. But banks have rigid policies on this.
  But the ex ANZ chief seemed to have caused much greater loss to the bank and as Catriona pointed out he was not held accountable as an ordinary bank staffer would be.
  So Catriona is implying that either rank and file staffers who steal from and defraud their employers should be treated lenuiently, or that a top manager who defrauds his or her employer should be made to face the full force of the law.
  This has a special significance for banks, their staffs are entrusted with vast sums of money whether in cash or ledger entries and the highest integrity is expected. In the old days the local bank manager was the guardian of his branch and was expected to have the highest integrity (as well as the ability to say ‘no’), and almost all achieved this.
  Therefore one would expect the bank’s head office management including the CEO to have similar integrity fitting for a bank rather than a family owned company that plays fast and loose.
  So Catriona has made the point that the ex CEO should have been treated as harshly as any other bank officer.
  For example the ex CEO claimed that some Australian manager (from memory) said he could incur these expenses and the NZ board meekly accepted that. The NZ Board should have called his bluff on this and if the ex CEO wanted to back that claim should have forced him to go to the Employment Court (which he would not do).
  So Catriona is right, the ANZ’s New Zealand Board has fallen far short of exercising its responsibilities here and the parent Australian Board has also fallen short of doing the right thing for ANZ shareholders (which would indirectly include many Kiwisavers).

    Often the smaller stuff is used for a “dismissal” and the culprit removed.
    
    No bank wants top publicly declare they have a “crook” in the company and unless there are huge amounts involved.
    
    Modern banking also makes such fraud difficult.
    
    Before we all get too excited how about we wait to see all the facts. I very much doubt this is the end of the show but I would be happy to be wrong, the whole thing is just an attempted beat up of Sir John Key. We have vastly bigger issues in NZ revolving around the dishonesty and overt corruption in the coalition.

      You are right that it is the ‘small stuff’ that is relied on to execute a hatchet job. I would hazard a guess that John Key had negative vibes about the guy and wanted him out.
      I would hazard a guess that some relatively junior person unearthed incriminating ledger entries and quietly blew the whistle with the internal auditor who quietly wheezed up the Board’s Audit and risk Committee. John Key is smart and will have lines of unofficial communications open.
      As for saying it is ‘small stuff’, it is in absolute terms pretty big stuff – thousands of dollars worth. Even if the CEO claimed he had approval – why was he furtive in not having it properly booked so it was included in his declared remuneration and appropriate fringe benefit tax paid?
      
      Something that happened years ago – J Paul Getty the oil tycoon noticed a promising junior employee marked for promotion was putting his private mail through the firm’s postage meter. He quietly suggested the employee find another job. That ex-employee got another job and defrauded his new employer of much larger amounts. That vindicated Paul’s initial action.
      
      So goodness knows what the ANZ ex CEO may have been up to, John Key smelt a rat, and the ‘smiling assassin’ claimed his biggest scalp yet. I bet what happened is all around the Merrill Lynch office in New York where John used to work.

Extraordinary revelations at the NZ Herald about ANZ selling prime real estate to David Hisco’s wife for $4m below market value. The big questions for me are:

(1) Did the ANZ pay $2m of Fringe Benefit Tax to cover the below-market sale of David Hisco’s house?

(2) Was the additional $4m remuneration to David Hisco properly reported?

  mjw – I think it was actually $1m below market rate at the time – the new Council valuations would have since taken it up to $10m. Most expensive houses these days are selling for a least $1-2m below those rating valuations.

    tf78 – I don’t believe that is correct. The house was sold for $1m below purchase price. Purchase was in 2011. Sale was in 2017. There was a lot of appreciation in the Auckland property market between 2011 and 2017.
    
    So as I say, about $4m below market price.
    
    However, no doubt the ANZ got a registered valuation at the time so they could quantify the additional remuneration and FBT. 🙂

CCTV pictures captured the moment a 56-year-old man was repeatedly punched in an unprovoked attack at a bar.

George Horn, 25, of no fixed address, was seen shaking the man’s hand before talking and laughing with him at the Jolly Sportsman pub in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, on 18 August 2018.

But a minute later he suddenly began to throw punches, leaving the victim with an eye injury. He then attacked a 30-year-old man outside the pub.

Horn pleaded guilty to two counts of grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to nine years in jail at Aylesbury Crown Court.

Yesterday I watched the deepfake video of Bill Hader (SNL cast member) being artificially rendered to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Gotta say on close inspection it didn’t pass muster, you could tell it was fake. But if you were just casually watching I could imagine it being pretty convincing, and the technology is only going to get better. One question, how do they do the voices? Can a computer simulate an individual’s voice yet, are they mixing together recordings, or does it require a convincing human impressionist?

But my overall take on deepfake videos is that we’ve been here before.

Twenty-five years ago a photo was proof. If you saw a photograph of event X, you could be reasonably sure event X happened. Then photoshop came along. Nowadays everybody knows not to just accept an image, even a photorealistic one, as proof that something happened.

It took a few decades, but software can now do the same with video. We’ll have to make the same adjustment we did with photos, and learn not to always accept footage of an event as proof that an event happened.

Although this does leave the awkward open question, what exactly will constitute proof in the age of deepfakes? We live in potentially confusing times.

  The method I’m starting to use to determine fake from real is quite simple:
  
  If SJW’s are holding something up as real then it probably isn’t.
  
  Take climate change; when someone tells me that 4 molecules of CO2 per 10,000 molecules of air forms a blanket of CO2 I know they have no idea what they are talking about and that their claims are completely Mann made.

    You will need a single piece of A4 paper and four pens. I suggest the following colours.
    
    Red for Co2, Green for Nitrogen, Black for Oxygen and Yellow for Argon.
    
    Make 4 red dots on the page, make 7,800 green dots on the page, make 2,100 black dots on the page, make 96 yellow dots on the page.
    
    Now tell me how the red dots are the most significant and stand out markers on the page and how they represent a climate emergency.

More government takeover of education, with up to 1000 job losses?

The National Party is claiming to have been leaked another Cabinet paper, this one outlining a shake up the vocational education sector.

This morning National’s tertiary education spokesman Shane Reti revealed some details of the paper, which he said was going to Cabinet on Monday.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins released proposals in February to overhaul the sector, aiming to better align training with regional needs for labour and skills.

The Government has already put $98 million towards bailing out Unitec, Whitireia and Tai Poutini polytechnics, and Hipkins has said that more will face financial failure if the Government does nothing.

But Reti said the paper showed that the Government was intending to go further than it has said, stripping power and assets from regional polytechnics.

“The polytechs will be controlled by a head office. They will have their cash and community legacy assets ring fenced at head office. All other assets including buildings and land will be taken away and consolidated.

“For high-performing polytechs like the Southern Institute of Technology, this will be devastating.”

He also repeated his earlier claim – dismissed by Hipkins as scaremongering – that the reforms would lead to 1000 job losses.

He would not say who had leaked the paper to him, but it follows the leaking of a paper to National about the cannabis referendum last month – though the Government claimed that paper was out of date.

  Polytechs went off the rails when they left their core business and started to offer gender studies courses or to try to become universities.
  
  This is yet another example of New Zealand making a hash out of an education stream that every country runs. Find a system that works internationally and copy it, or join it.
  
  One thing I am sure of – this idea may cost 1,000 jobs but it will create many jobs at the Ministry in Wellington.

Hamilton is being lobbied to declare a “climate emergency” by several school girls. School girls are of course the acknowledged experts in the field of climate and one criticises them at one’s peril. However I fail to see what emergency the climate is creating in Hamilton at present. So far we’ve had a pretty mild winter. We haven’t had a drought for ages. There is no flooding or anything like that going on. We have no coastline that might raise concerns of sea level rise. So where is the emergency?

A change in climate is not a universal catastrophe. It depends on the climate you had before and how it changed. Hamilton, which has always been a bit of a cold wet miserable place in winter, is one of those places likely to benefit from climate change with better growing conditions. Hamilton residents might need to cut their grass a bit more frequently in future, but that hardly constitutes an emergency.

Yes – I know this is purely an exercise in political posturing and virtue signalling and nobody really thinks there is an actual emergency going on. But that is my point. We should save declarations of emergency for real emergencies lest we become like the boy who cried wolf.

  You should worry about Taupo more; not about a super-eruption, but any type of eruption from the lake would be hugely damaging to both people and infrastructure, particularly hydro. The ‘super-eruptions’ are few and far between but Taupo’s had other burps and rumbles that would still be catastrophic in a civil sense today. There’s generally an ‘unrest period’ every eight or so years and the last one was in 2012.
  
  As for Okataina, I’d be more concerned about Taranaki and Taupo myself.

  How the fuck would they know. Taupo is a notoriously difficlult type of volcano to predict. It could errupt next month or in 20,000 years. Nobody knows. However, they are correct in the devastation it would cause. The minor eruption about 2,000 years ago covered a huge area under ash. The much larger eruption 25,000 years ago pumped 1,000 km3 of ash into the atmosphere. Most of it came down and blanketed much of the central North Island.

  Actually, I just hope the the Earth keeps negotiating its way safely through the Torrid Meteor Stream (it’s 30million km wide, and takes the earth in orbit 12 days to negotiate every June/July and November) .
  A bit of a collision would make the climate alarmists shut up.
  And give the climate change survivors something to REALLY think about.

I’d like to see a law change on public notices. Lots of important public notices of sometimes significant legal issues and they are required only to put a notice in the “local gazette.” Our local paper isn’t even delivered to the rural properties that make up our area and many people no longer read the newspapers in paper format. Our Council should be required to put public notices on the local council facebook page, eg our local board should be required to put any public notices relevant to our area on the local board facebook page, and ideally on the local community page.

Bloody hell! Just out taking the dog for a walk when a noisy old white van with what looked like some sort of ‘Red Cross’ flag attached to the roof, went roaring up Remuera Road. There was a number of unsavory looking characters sitting in it, so i immediatly called police from my smartphone. The guy just laughed and hung up on me.

If there was an offshore blog that just copied all of DPF’s posts and had a no-moderation policy then DPF wouldn’t be responsible for any comments, and it wouldn’t be subject to NZ law either.

DPF doesn’t appear to assert copyright on the content he produces. I wonder if he would mind?
