Those who live or have lived on the North Shore will know the shop I’m describing.

For the past 11 years there has been a fruit and vegetable shop on the corner of East Coast Rd and Shakespeare Road.

Photographed over the weekend, the blackboard on the front now says:

“Closing down after 11 years. Thanks a lot Jacinda”.

Now to the converted of Milford and North Shore, it’s a good wind up. But it is sad, and if NZ is heading for a recession, is it to be a sign of the times..?

  I was surprised the boy had no other options because school zoning is so tight. The most logical answer in this case would be for the Education Ministry to allow a swap between him and a 13yo at a not so traditional school. There would be plenty of 13yo boys who would give their eye teeth for a chance to attend Grammar.
  Unfortunately if John Graham was around today he would have to accept that the High Court could overturn school decisions by injunction and judicial review – think St Bedes and the rowing incident.
  It could be that old boy QC’s may offer pro-bono services in support of Grammar.

    I was surprised that the mother was complaining that due to zoning she didn’t have any options other than Auckland Grammar School.
    
    First world problems there. Some would kill to get their child in that school.
    
    All this comes down to is the late grandfather. If the only way the boy can honour him is to have long hair, then they’re concentrating on the wrong things

      That was the situation then. A big issue then was whether schools should force boys to wear caps. A Rotorua boy wrote to the local newspaper (under a pseudonym as was permitted by MSM at the time) criticising this including the term ‘bureaucratic heights’. The editor (in breach of journalism ethics) told the Principal the writer’s name (I am guessing at a Rotary Club meeting) and the boy was suspended and subsequently would have been re-located at the co-ed school where the principals of the Boys’ and Girls’ schools dumped their outcasts. There was not much support for the boy.

    Luxury. At my school the prinicpal would have sliced you apart with a bread knife and danced on your grave singing Hallelujah.
    
    To be more serious, long hair was not uncommon during the 1970s at my BHS, and “six of the best” was reserved more serious transgressions. Two to four strokes was the more common punishment.

      Most of our older teachers were ex military, you could cop the cane for telling a joke they didn’t appreciate even something funny at your own expense. Being in the cadets was an advantage, as was playing rugby in any position they said. Not dropping your friends in it met with the cane but some respect and leeway – even allowing hair slightly past the collar, but not for soccer players.

        I was a boarder at a provincial BHS. Caning was much more common there than at the high school itself. By the end of the 3rd form everyone had been caned at some point. The worst offenders were getting caned at least once every week or two. They didn’t care – in a few cases because the cane paled by comparison to what they’d get at home. Different times.

      In the 1920’s the Head Boy of a prominent boys’ school in Birmingham was seen smoking on a bus in mufti at the weekend and the busybody snitched to the Headmaster. The Headmaster gave him a choice – 6 of the best in the front of the whole school or expulsion. He quietly left the school.

  I don’t know when John Graham was the head, but I googled Auckland Grammar and brought up some photos from back in the seventies and there was a lot a hair about in those days.
  I don’t know why this is going to court because it’s happened before and the schools have won.
  Another solution I’ve heard is for the student to take be asked to take a proposal to the BOT.
  They don’t turn up. Mind you this kid probably would.

      Look at the parents. Either they are trouble-makers, or they have encouraged their brat to seek publicity in the name of ‘personal development’ or ‘free speech’ or to expose ‘racism’ or some such.

  Historically schools were able to make rules that weren’t necessarily legally enforceable, but noone really thought to question such rules.
  
  These days, people are far more aware of their individual legal rights versus government institutions … i think it might be part of the ‘woke’ movement.
  
  The solution is to change the law to make it legal for schools to set standards like in the old days. Although, the human rights act is like a quasi US style constitution … and laws which contravene human rights can be quashed.
  
  Hair length a human right? Please explain.

    I think the reason a school lost a similar case was on the grounds that the rules were inconsistent. I’m pretty confident the school in this case has tied them up nice and tightly with legal advice taken. I’d very surprised if they lose.

    @ Nigel K: Why indeed. Sometimes we forget that one of the aims of education is to produce citizens capable of contributing to society.
    We could say that ‘dictating the clothing and hairstyle’ of students is part of establishing, and maintaining standards of self-discipline, in much the same way as learning and obeying the rules of rugby.
    Self discipline gives self-esteem to the face in the mirror.
    (I am reminded of a young fellow back in the 70’s – a long haired, rather grubby hippy, who was quite frankly a nuisance to his PS employer – who ‘won’ a place in the CMT intake at Waiouru. Quite frankly, they were glad to see him go, but hoped he might be useful when he returned. After 3 months he turned up with his resignation. He LOVED the army! He loved the uniform, the haircut, the physical demands – and signed up for what turned out to be a successful army career.)

        Tesla achieved good production in this last Quarter and they ‘only’ lost $400 million.
        Share Price has sagged a fair bit too.
        Two of my friends have them (X and S). I’d observe the build quality isn’t great.
        One keeps having problems with the gull wing doors. The other says running the air cond and heater chews through the power- he commutes in his.
        I like Hybrids as a better solution. That BMW i3 RX looks like a good suburban runaround. But so is our VW Golf…

        You point me to a non-existent truck with a potential maximum range of 160km and a 300kwh battery that would take 100 hours to recharge from a normal power point and 5 hours on a Tesla supercharger.
        
        So you drive for about 90 minutes, have to recharge for 4 hours at best before you can return home. Or more likely wait 4 days before you can return to base. Hilarious.

    FYI I did a fag-packet calculation the other day comparing a Nissan Leaf to a Nissan Juke. It will take 200,000km (or about 5 years of average mileage) before the EV begins to break even on cost. And that’s assuming that no ruc is introduced on EVs.
    
    I’m guessing that the person who buys a brand new car is likely to be changing it every 4-5 years so an EV is never going to save them any money.

      Just curious. After 200,000km the battery would likely need to be replaced, at between $5000-9000. Nissan guarantee 8 years or 100,000km. Is that factored into your calculation?
      
      Secondly, what will resell values do as the battery age approaches 10 years? A person contemplating buying a used EV must consider they may be up for replacing battery (at considerable upfront cost). So that potential cost would need to come off the price they are willing to pay for a used EV. This contrasts with combustion, where you may need repairs, but not normally all at once.

      Before you answer, use your keyboard warrior skills to:
      
      1. Identify how much electricity per annum is consumed in NZ;
      2. How much fuel is consumed by our circa 4.0mill vehicles;
      3. How much extra electricity will need to be generated to ensure the vehicles do the circa 40billion km per annum
      
      Then work out if NZ has enough electricity capacity if we get rid of the oil burning power stations.
      
      Then tell us how the govt proposes to tell us how the vehicle fleet will be powered in the future.
      
      Answer the above, rather than typing immediate reactions when you disagree with something and you might engage debate!

      so you need 8 turbines to generate 1.5mw
      10,000wm multiplied by 8 means you need a minimum of 80,000 turbines
      cost per turbine = NZ$6m
      total cost of 80,000 turbines = $480billion
      
      Then you need to factor in redundancy, extra coverage for when the wind blows in the wrong place, the infrastructure, the batteries, the repairs and maintenance…
      and you do all that and you still need an alternative for when the wind don’t blow
      
      This is a $1 TRILLION plus exercise, the only way to convert to electric vehicles affordably is nuclear.

        The reality is that electric cars are something like Betamax was to video recording was in the 1980s. Good idea, but expensive. The realistic option will be Hydrogen Fuel cell for vehicles. Although it is behind electric, manufacturers are producing such vehicles now, however, the electric car industry is not giving up with some mud slinging.

  2. Does everyone drive in quarter mile sprints everywhere? I wouldn’t buy either car as they aren’t what I’m about.
  3. Let’s now go away for a weekends skiing. If I fill up in Levin I can drive to Ohakune, drive up the mountain twice and get back to Levin without refuelling. Can the Tesla do that?
  
  Long term, I’ll accept that electric cars will become mainstream and superior. But if it costs $60,000 for a Leaf and $25,000 for a petrol car that does the same thing, I know which one I’m going to buy. The fact the socialists in power can only promote the electric vehicle by artificial discounts and penalties shows they’re not there yet.
  
  No one subsidised the Model T into being. It was all down to an innovator making a better product that was affordable and overall better than a horse and cart.
  
  That’s the challenge, and it isn’t solved through socialism

    The issue is not with copyright, but because they misappropriated Social Media Consultants Ltd subscriber list. They also arguably misappropriated the Disqus commenting account.
    Social Media Consultants Ltd would have had ownership of the intellectual property associated with the design of the Whaleoil site, but by granting a ‘creative commons’ licence for content would have conceded copyright relating to content.
    Hence the liquidator could seek an injunction shutting them down over misappropriation of the subscriber list but a court would be more likely to award monetary compensation which would probably be rather modest.
    Note that the liquidator expressed the alleged misappropriation as an ‘opinion’. This effectively shields the liquidator from defamation action from SB in the very unlikely event she chooses to take action.

    I am sure I provoked Cam more than once which would have warranted action but he merely gritted his teeth and allowed me to remain.
    For example I supported the late Judge Barber until the cows came home. Cam and others claimed he had misled Justice Dept when being appointed chair of a review tribunal when he did not hold a lawyer’s practicing certificate. To cut a long story short he did not need one and anyway Judges surrender practicing certificates when appointed to the Bench. I think Pete Belt was active then.

    Not so MickMac. It was Tony Ryall who, in 2008, told DHB’s that they had to start living within their means because of the looming Global Financial Crisis. Whilst the Health portfolio is often a ministerial graveyard, as David Clark is rapidly discovering, Ryall was one of the best Health Ministers I have seen in the many years I have closely followed politics, and worked in the sector.
    
    Clark’s response has been to tell the DHB’s that the brakes are off, which is why the cumulative DHB deficit has suddenly mushroomed to over half a billion dollars.

  If New Zealand wants better health outcomes, particularly in cancer, it will cost money. We could start by giving pharmac progressively a 50 percent increase in its budget. That could be funded by axing any one of a dozen low value programs.

Last night’s press release. Northland Taranaki and Hawkes Bay to get new cancer radiology service. The issue is these services will be delivered over the next 6 years. But wait, the interim government policy paper on cancer is due when? ……. the end of the month!

What a haphazard shambles.

At the election, Labour told us cancer was a matter of urgent concern requiring a National Cancer Agency no less. Two years on, and prompted by the opposition putting forward a policy paper, Clark is embarrassed into action. As Minister of Health, Clark is a fraud.

  hullkiwi but she is taking the money to pay for the first four out of the $1 .7 billion given to health in the last budget and considering that they have a $454 million deficit in their DHB’s already they have a large problem, this is even worse than the underfunding that David Clark continually blames National for. You can not keep allocating to health budgets with one hand and then take it back with the other hand because the public have turned on you for not looking after Cancer Patients that could be saved with the right medication.

    Happychappy, I agree. You can tell Jacinda worked in Downing Street under Tony Blair and Alastair Campbell. Yesterday’s announcement was straight out of their copy book. Repackage and present as “new” a BAU proposal already in progress, accelerate forward some expenditure, but not worry about how the whole proposal will be delivered or financed/funded.
    
    Completely dishonest, and fraudulent government for the sake of:
    1. Trying to capture the news agenda; and
    2. Favourable headlines.

However he was calling out this announcement as nothing new, and cynically timed to appear as though the government was doing something, when in reality, all they were doing was trying to take the shine of National.

Lets look at the history then.
Under King…people were going to Australia to get cancer treatment.
Under Ryall and Colman, we recovered that position and were shortening waiting times, imagine what would have been achieved if we had a National govt. now.
Under this current clown car govt. we have moved, in just 2 years, back to a health service reminiscent of the King years again.

Good grief caught the tail end of James Shaw and Marama Davidson being interviewed on Morning Report.

Davidson banging on about how National are “virtue signalling” in relation to the costs to the poor and low income earners when climate change policies are enacted (Davidson reckons that the poor and low income earners will be the most affected if nothing is done about climate change! She wasn’t asked to explain her BS but presumably in Davidson’s world the poor all live along the seashore and will be inundated by “metres and metres of rising sea levels sometime in the next 12 years” good forking grief what a nut case)!

As for Shaw merrily dissing National – thought it was ironic that he would rather prefer to be in government with Winston than National (with Winston killing off the Kermadec sanctuary, the left’s desired CGT … mind you I suppose Winston supported the O&G Ban so perhaps that’s why he’s the darling of the Greens)!

Frankly National should rule out working with the Greens – they are uncompromising, arrogant and destructive zealots – and there’s nothing special about their policies as anything half-sensible can be taken up by the big two parties anyway!

Chris Trotter’s piece is speculation and he talks about ‘white man’s anger’ at Ihumutao resulting in disaster for the Col. He suggests that Jacinda could either send in the bulldozers and forgo the Maori vote (and Polynesian probably) or could take it to the Country in an early election. Too tough to call. The 1st would destroy her legacy (Helen Clarke and foreshore), the 2nd see her in opposition or with 3 more years on the Treasury Bench. I’m pro a strong and insightful settlement, and doubt that Fletcher’s ‘interests’ would dominate in the minds of the general electorate compared to families and historic roots – but big boots to flick that coin. One question would be is who is the real Winston Peters and will we ever know?
Will the stonefields survive? Actually a great test for NZ’s politicians and a chance to shake out the country’s identity, a further loss of Mana or finally a foothold for triumph and identity – but whose, and who would emerge as the real New Zealanders, no surprise that I always look back at 2 World Wars and sport from which NZ’s identity is considered by many to have been forged, Lovelock et al.
I remember in past elections reference to support of the Greens by Remuera housewifes driving big 4 wheel drives. Probably those cars have got smaller now but maybe that voice is still revealing.Also no surprise if there is a deft step past this with an answer to which middle NZ generally agrees. Cometh the hour, cometh the leader – but which one.

        I understand that Ed, I also understand that there is a rift between the mana whenua over that decision and one with council for rezoning part of the land to allow for building. That later decision I believe going to the Highest Court. As for the poster he or she could find a job supplying wind for a wind farm. There’s going to be further holes dug under land claims already settled and it may be at Ihumutao, it’s not that long ago we saw the path of a motorway rerouted, already consented and owned – may have been the same iwi.

Is Winston Peters planning to blow up the Coalition Government over Ihumatao? Sean Plunket has been reporting and analysing New Zealand politics for a long time, and he thinks that Winston just might be getting ready to do exactly that.

Certainly, the last few days have witnessed Peters and NZ First’s prolix bovver-boy, Shane Jones, heaping plenty of disparagement upon the Ihumatao protesters. While his leader dismissed the protesters as “outsiders”, Jones drew the voters’ attention to their politically disqualifying “yoga pants”. These are not the sort of comments calculated to facilitate an equitable solution to the Ihumatao problem. [1]

Chris Trotter wonders if Winston for his own political gain – could put himself at the head of all those New Zealanders who refuse to countenance the Coalition Government caving-in to the Ihumatao protesters.

Is there a notion that people are starting to see –

– as opposed to a notion many people have always suspected –

In respect to Ihumatao, both Iwi and Crown have agreed to a Waitangi Treaty settlement (2014).
Both Iwi and Crown have agreed the disputed Wallace land was private land under the same law as determines the 2014 settlement, and all other Treaty settlements.

The subsequent purchase by Fletchers appears legal, and offers the recognised Iwi of Ihumatao generous concessions as well as accommodating the historic and tapu features (as did the Wallace family farming of it, around archaeological middens and sacred burial caves)

So what legally can the Coalition Government do?
Except support the law that entitles Fletchers to exercise the intent that Auckland Council, also apparently in legal process, has approved the re-zoning of the land for – building houses?

Ardern’s action to date, the call to halt any construction, is surely illegal unless she can cite safety issues, as opposed to having a conversation with anyone.
Being private land, it is surely Fletchers’ call to decide what they do safely, and request Police support, and enforce trespass notices if needed, to do it.

Possible that most computer programming jobs will disappear within a few years after that. Already starting to make inroads even now with AI based productivity enhancing tools.
  
  Teach your kids how to do plumbing, and fix terminators. A lot of keyboard based jobs are likely to disappear within a decade or two.

    Read somewhere between wildly optimistic to completely implausible time estimations.
    
    My reaction is exactly the same as when I had a friend on the same programming course 30 years ago express worries that RPG2 would destroy programming as a job because it made it do simple anyone could do it.
    My reply was that it might alter the methods and environment, but it would still require the same analysis and design skills to understand and produce what the customer needs.
    Writing code and making programs, screens or web pages is not that difficult.
    Making a decent system that works well and fills a particular need is a whole different ball game. It is as much about understanding and managung people, and understanding their needs and the way they think and function as anything.
    There is plenty of life in the industry yet.

  Once there was coding now its frameworks and bolt on modules. Speed and memory have facilitated program development. The days of translating assembler into absolute for creating a 256 byte boot rom are long gone.
  I have built whole e-commerce web sites with only frameworks and a smidgin of HTML.
  
  The Raspberry Pi is a useful learning tool. Coding will be increasingly limited to low level systems design interfacing.

Caution. Boring accounting stuff.
The government, through statutory regulation LI2019/153, have changed the use of money interest rates charged and payable to taxpayers. If you short pay tax you used to get charged 8.22% use of money interest. Now that interest rates are on the fall, that rate has changed to, get this!, 8.35%. If you overpay tax you get credited with use of money interest. It used to be at the rate of 1.02%. With falling interest rates that has dropped to 0.81%.
I thought it rather queer that falling interest rates would go from 8.22% to 8.35% but it has been pointed out to me that with our present minister of finance that sort of subterfuge is par for the course.

  Today I read an article about America’s part time President.
  While he was spending a lazy weekend golfing in Florida a whole lot of his fellow citizens were gunned down in two mass shootings.
  He tweeted
  “Terrible shootings in ElPaso, Texas. Reports are very bad, many killed. Working with State and Local authorities, and Law Enforcement. Spoke to Governor to pledge total support of Federal Government. God be with you all!”
  Fourteen minutes later he tweeted support for some cage fighter.
  He then retweeted four tweets from people who said he was a great bloke, before returning to the massacres a few minutes latter.
  Later on he jumped in his plane and went back to the WH.
  He doesn’t speak to the nation as previous presidents have & as Ardern did.

      Apparently there was an incident at St Lukes yesterday – two masked thieves stole jewellery. The police are on the case. Hopefully the thieves are caught.

I know this is a political blog so I hope nobody hates me asking this:
Next year Anzac Day is on a Saturday. Will the statutory holiday be Friday 24th April or Monday 27th April? I thought it would be Monday 27th, but it would appear that the banks will be open that day as I have just put through a payment due that day.

  Absoludely requires a head tilt as well. Twyfords head tilt was in evidence in his interview re the CAA harrassment and bullying, but that still needs work. He couldn’t stop himself smiling while doing the tilt. He needs to watch his leader combine the head tilt with the appropriate concerned look, then practice in front of the mirror.
