If this article in Herald is not FAKE news…Nats doomed. It reinforces the burgeoning impression Kaye is a PC Woke/social media driven flake !( perhaps that’s the purpose of the article ?? )
Here is Goldsmith making a pithy, humorous and importantly, TRUE statement about Ardern “sticking to her knitting” ( translation for the stupid : “ mind your own business”) and Kaye reportedly telling him to pull his head in . WTF??? Is she totally unaware of how her foolish intervention looks ?

        At the moment I’m very conflicted but I’m going to vote Act party vote after having voted for National since Post Norman Kirk. I would have voted for the Bridges/Bennet combination because I detected their strength of purpose – they had a goal for the people of New Zealand, and I liked their no-nonsense approach.
        I like people who speak with the courage of their convictions, though often not agreeing with them. I believe that mature people will have opinions and will express them, and listen to others who express theirs. They are able to differentiate between the serious and the trivial and they don’t embarrass their supporters by indulging in immature criticism of their colleagues.
        Which I guess is why the Muller/Kaye ticket has no appeal for me –

    It’s sexist of you to assume only women knit. In fact many men do, I gave it a go when I was younger, and apparently David Seymour did too.
    
    If he had said “stick to knitting” that would be more dismissive – not in a sexist way but in implying that’s all she can competently do, and would be much closer to the truth.
    
    Everyone knows what “stick to your knitting” means and the issue isn’t whether Goldsmith said something sexist or made a gaffe. The issue is how the recently-funded media are seizing on every opportunity, no matter how slight or non-existent, and shouting and screaming like so many woke harridans. It reminds me of the scene in Life of Brian where the old boy gets stoned to death for saying “this meal would be good enough for Jehovah.” So much of that brilliant movie has come to pass (I want to be a woman, and have babies, etc).

  I share your view Souvlaki about both Paul Goldsmith’s humorous remark and also Nikki Kaye’s pitifully woke reprimand. However a smart operator like Goldsmith must surely know that the lame media are going to pick up on anything they can twist to suit their narrative, be it imagined homophobia, sexism or whatever. Best to think first and avoid providing the ammunition.

    I suspect that Goldsmith is not a misogynist sexist person, but by apologising they are accepting the criticism that he is, and by extension they are.
    
    Now if they want to attract back the sort of woman that thinks Goldsmith was sexist they better push him down the list (or even better right off the list). Have a little purge of anyone who isn’t woke-safe.
    
    Isn’t that what you’re basically arguing?
    
    You will not win the game by trying to out-Jacinda Jacinda. That is impossible, not just because she is good at that, but because she has her whole spin machine (including the media) supporting her in the effort.
    
    To overplay my movie analogy: it’s like Sylvester Stallone dressing up in drag and trying to play lead in a chick-flick. That is not going to work in the box office.
    
    National better figure out what their movie is and start making that damn movie. Right now they’re making one of those box office fizzers where they take a cult movie and try replace the lead character with a black lesbian to be woke.
    
    Nobody votes for a wimp that apologises all the time. Look what happened to Cunliffe.
    
    It seems that National are completely gutting themselves. No longer is it the party of sensible people that are data driven and select based on competence. They are now apparently trying to score woke points: trying to out-Labour Labour.

    I thought she did pretty well also, and got some good hits on Ardern, although she didn’t stress Ardern’s lack of business knowledge or understanding enough for my money.
    
    Why didn’t she ask Dann “Are you suggesting The Warehouse don’t understand their own business, or are trying to use this as an opportunity to downsize for some reason?”
    
    Call them out on their BS, both Ardern and Dann. This government are useless at delivering anything, the very last thing I’d want as a shareholder would be Ardern sticking her oar in. Shades of when Helen Clark breached NZX rules on Air NZ all those years ago. Should definitely stick to their knitting.
    
    Interesting too, that the RNZ headline is all about Goldsmith’s comment, rather than Kaye’s criticism of the government, but again hardly surprising. That $50m of our cash is the best money Jacinda ever spent.

      “When you studied the Warehouse annual reports, what was the annual cost of overheads, not including salaries and wages?”
      
      “When you studied the Warehouse annual reports, what is the weekly cost of topping up staff wages and salaries over and above the subsidy?”
      
      “How much revenue would they need to have on a daily basis to provide enough gross profit to cover both overheads and wages and salary short fall and meet all their financial commitments?”
      
      “With a revenue of zero, how does that work?”

  Warehouse have been in trouble competion wise for a while. Their business model aint working currently.
  
  Tindall was “talking” with Ardern just before lockdown when the wage subsidy was capped at $300k. Supposely about PPE. But English came out with an excellent summary of economic problems facing NZ. Ardern said she had talking with “experts” Tindall & Morgan.
  
  Ardern claims in part to close NZ down due conversion with friends in London. She believes the last person she speaks with.
  
  Tindall did his job. Ardern fucked up.
  
  Labour are trying to prop up prices i.e wages in a badly falling market. Not going to work.
  
  It would be useful for someone in National to point out the economic realities and what happens in the real world.

  Goldsmith should realise that anyone who would take offence at that comment is never going to vote for him regardless of what he says or does, and likewise anyone who would vote for him would be disappointed in him backing off and feeling he has to apologise to anyone for using that particular phrase in that specific situation.
  That’s just where we are today in this world of Social Justice Warriors and things may cool off as those folk lucky enough to still have jobs get back to work.

In the 13 years we’ve lived here we’ve had successive close neighbours on each side who’ve included the following:

. Samoan
. NZ European
. Indian
. American lesbians
. British
. Tokelauan
. Maori

And we’ve got on very well with each and every one of them.
I guess you could call us supporters of cultural diversity.

  While that might make for an interesting experience, Captain Mainwaring, the question that I have about such a high turnover in neighbours is how does it allow for or foster the development of a strong neighbourhood and community with deep roots, identity, commitment, and connection to an area?
  
  To me, it doesn’t, and that is a concern and should be to everyone. How can you, your family and your community depend upon or draw upon ‘the neighbours’ in a time of need say, or for new community projects, amenities etc., when the neighbours change every 12 months and they have no long term commitment to the area? Do most neighbours even know each other or have even talked to each other?
  
  To me, this high turnover, common now throughout Auckland, is dysfunctional and is a worrying sign for the future cohesiveness of the city and the strength of our communities. In my view, it’s hard to thrive in a shifting sea of strangers.

    Let me explain.
    One side was a renter house with Maori tenants when we arrived, later replaced with Samoans. Landlord sold the house to owner-occupiers (British man with Tokelauan wife).
    Other side was owner-occupied (Maori) who sold to an absentee landlord. Has had quite high turnover, each tenant seems to stay only a couple of years but there’s usually a good reason.

    Two years is pretty average for tenancies, probably a bit above average in some locations. Tenants pretty much leave of their own volition unless the rental is sold or tenants are turfed out because they are bad or risky. So mostly tenant choice. Not sure how concerned citizens can persuade tenants to stay on for the good of the community. Good luck with that.
    
    (Risky tenants are not going to be high on the list when Minister Faafoi’s new rules come in. Maybe high on the social housing waiting list though.)

  I’d say that any time before April/May next year is too soon.
  
  We have not been through flu season yet. It is still far too early to be crowing about success.
  On the flip side, it is still way too early to assess all the damage caused by the reaction.
  
  And, on top of that, people are really bad at processing information while they are panicked. We need to give everyone a few months to calm down before a sensible RC could achieve anything.
  
  That said, I doubt a RC will achieve much more than a bit of poi-waving. The Chch earthquake RC basically achieved nothing.

    In the meantime, as and when borders are reopened to those who pass entry checks, it would be interesting to know what sort of medical tests will be used.
    
    Will they be temperature tests, or will they be on a scale like Taiwan’s – PCR, with those who fail refused entry?
    
    For us lay folk: PRC – polymerase chain reaction – amplifies trace amounts of DNA or RNA. PRC tests can pick up the presence of viruses. There is a “real time” version of the procedure as well as a laboratory version.
    
    Taiwan remains the stand-out success of Wuhan flu containment, because it kept businesses and schools up and running as well as containing the pandemic.

Yesterday Wellington City Council decided rather sensibly not to proceed with a couple of million bucks of temporary road coning to encourage safe distancing for pedestrians and cyclists. Oh, and losing hundreds of car parks in the process.

Not to worry ratepayers, Waka Kotahi was paying nearly all of it. Thanks for the offer taxpayers.

Chief city planner David Chick, however, said “some of the projects could still go ahead in the future”. No agenda then.

Christchurch City council also got the OK for similar funding from Waka Kotahi. Is that still going ahead? Other councils? How about letting us know Waka Kotahi.

On their website WAKA KOTAHI (big letters) is also known as New Zealand Transport Agency (small letters). In case you were wondering, the website also tells us – ” ‘Waka’ means ‘vessel’ and ‘kotahi’ means ‘one’ so our Māori name conveys the concept of ‘travelling together as one’ and embraces integration, affordability, safety, responsiveness and sustainability.” OK then.

Nikki Kaye’s silly sexist outburst yesterday reinforced for me the opinion that National is lurching more and more left and woke and alienating its support base.

Stick to your knitting is a phrase as old as the hills and Goldsmith used it correctly. Kaye should be ashamed that she has such a poor grasp of her mother tongue.

Her silly outburst that mentioning knitting is sexist is massively uninformed. In the old days, knitting was actually primarily undertaken by men. While more women knit now than men, it is not a female-only pursuit. Many men knit. My two sons knit.

But worse still is surely that she thinks it good to hang National’s dirty washing in public. She just went off pop in an irrational emotional outburst. This is not the stuff good leaders are made of. National voters will see this as weakness and poor leadership; the lefties will be loving the infighting of a party eating itself.

And no Nikki, hanging out washing isn’t woman’s work either.

This wokeness is surely going to erode National’s support base. Muller and Kaye are a leadership disaster. Where is the firm hand on the tiller we had from previous National leaders and leadership teams? Where are Key+English, Jenny Shipley and others?

Glad to see that Seymour backed Goldsmith and acted as the voice of reason. At least someone isn’t bouncing around like a panicked bunny.

    Not much of a betting man myself but I’ll also put 50c and a servo pie on ACT doing better.
    
    I think a lot of ACT supporters often end up backing National in a tight race so as to not split the vote. However this time it is really hard to make the case that National is better than Labour and I think there is a good chance that a whole lot of them go back to voting for ACT.
    
    I can understand a misstep or two by Muller, but thus far he’s not really put a foot right, and Kaye just seems to be even more of the same.
    
    They might be making the right noises for their little echo chamber, but I doubt they’re getting the support of the punters.

        It is not just about parties but also about the MPs themselves. I expect that the first few on the ACT list are worth far more than counting token at number 50 on the National list.

    Stick to your knitting is a term used in business. If they played it correctly they should have pointed that out.
    That Labour and their supporters weren’t aware of what the term means suggests they truly don’t understand business.
    In business terms it simply means to focus on what you’re good at. It’s why so many businesses delegate out their accounting work etc because it’s not their area of expertise.
    Also, to assume it’s gendered is an insult to many men. I’m the only male in my family that doesn’t/hasn’t knitted.

There are 4 photos / videos of the victim, along with her name and occupation.
There is a plea from the police for witnesses or information.

But NOWHERE is there a description of the attacker: no approximate age, no physical attributes, no suggested ethnicity, no description of clothing.

How can people help if vital details are withheld ?

From the abuse, some of it violent, heaped on my Facebook posts critical of Jacinda’s handling of the Wuhan Flu panic I have scientifically determined that her staunchest supporters are middle aged women of European extraction. I have little doubt that it was to these tricoteuses that the wily Goldsmith was dog (bitch?)- whistling when he brought up the subject of Jacinda’s knitting, as many of them will have personally knitted booties for Neve. How will Todd win over this vital constituency who hold the keys to the election? A false hairpiece perhaps? A white sportscoat and a pink carnation? And what would Genghis Khan have done – perhaps the Honourable Mongolian Consul who now forms part of Todd’s retinue can tell us? And when will the National Party take its foot out of its mouth (nothing personal Nikki) and start acting like an alternative government. Time’s running out….

They tend to be overweight with scruffy hair and like to knit. Unfortunately I have a few on my extended family. As a result I never ‘share’ my political views on Facebook but I do comment on news websites. The abuse from these women is amazing given they claim to like Jacinda for her kindness. I have been disappointed with voters of my own gender as they don’t seem to be using their brain to the extent that male voters are. Instead they are more interested in supporting a celebrity style superficial personality rather than competent leadership.

Yet for some reason or other media reports say she is fuming over the massive Redundancies at the Warehouse Stores just for starters. Talk about “No Shit Sherlock” Ardern has caused the massive redundancies totally by her actions and panic shutting down NZs economy turning it to ashes
totally .All facts and figures are saying she has got “her knitting in a twist”. She seems to be acting daily like Mairzy Doats and Dosy Doats and Little Lambsy Divey. Wonder what part of personal responsibility does she conveniently ignore .Maybe all of it .

WHO announces yesterday that transmissions from of Covid-19 is “very rare”. If this is true, then it confirms that what we did over the last 3 months was a massive overaction. If you are ill then stay home would have achieved the same thing. I note very little in the NZ media about this story.

  To be fair to WHO, I think they said from transmission was very rare from asymptomatic cases.
  
  That would make some sense because the primary infection vector is via coughing/sneezing droplets. If you’re asymptomatic then you’re not coughing and sneezing.
  
  They also said said it was incredibly rare to find any transmission from surfaces. If that is true then it means all our hand sanitizing was a was a waste.

My partner was driving back home from Mt Roskill last night. He caught the interview on 1ZB with HDPA, and new Police Commissioner Andy ‘CAPP’ Costa.
They were discussing the decision to scrap the Armed Response Teams after just a 6 month trial.
Andy said, “It was clear to him that these response teams do not align with the style of policing Labor or the Greens expect…..
The Police Service will no longer routinely carry arms under his watch. Neither will it be acceptable for Officers to hurl insults in public, such as, “sit down fatty”, “zip it sweety”, “stick to your knitting”, or call anyone “grandpa”. Such breaches are likely to see members referred to the IPCA.
There have been escalating firearm incidents in New Zealand recently, and police will now be expected to ‘lead the way’ with a kinder, softer, more gentle approach. Particularly towards our ethnic communities.”
My partner reckoned listening to that gave a whole new meaning to ‘putting lipstick on a pig’. (…..and we wasn’t referring to Heather)

  What is really bad is the way cops show their distrust in the public by wearing stab-proof vests.
  
  When they arrest people they show their distrust even more by using handcuffs. No, they should just ask nicely and people will sit there. And don’t make them sit in the back; be friendly get them to ride up front.
  
  And their cars! All those aggressive flashing lights, radios and sirens and CO2-emitting death engines. How about just using more people-friendly cars. Nissan Leaf would be perfect.
  
  Lastly, they need to get rid of uniforms. It is so militaristic and, quite frankly, a bit scary. They need to relate to people better. What’s wrong with just what their customers wear? Hoodies and trackies.

    Those who are arrested are shown that by being handcuffed. They cannot be said to be under arrest if they go voluntarily with the Police. The act of putting the arrestee in a van or car is also an expression of arrest. Arrest also confers rights on the person affected.

      Look, the most important reason we arrest people is to take them to a safe place so they can correct themselves. That is why prisons are now called corrections.
      
      That correction process starts as soon as the cop interacts with the criminal. Once they have been arrested they are no longer criminals – they are former criminals on their correction journey.
      
      It is therefore important that the cops treat the criminal with as much respect and kindness as soon as possible.
      
      Any hostility can set that correction process back for hours, if not days. Therefore cops need to be sensitive to the former-criminal’s needs.
      
      The cop must immediately start building bridges to facilitate the correction process. The former criminal needs to trust the system and that can only start if they feel trusted. Anti-stab vests, sitting in the back and handcuffs all break down the trust.
      
      Cops should immediately ask the former-criminal what radio station they would like to listen to and/or their favourite Spotify list. A selection of cold drinks and snacks would help too. Offer to stop off at a Maccas if they need it.
      
      As a society we also need to build that trust by encouraging former criminals to vote. We should not lock them in prisons but trust them to show up voluntarily to their training sessions.
      
      We’re making excellent progress away from the old ways and over the next ten years we can get much further.

We remove the police from these people’s lives as long as they don’t infringe on other people’s lives.

The “no-police” people will need to wear signs advising the public of their status and their property will also need to be marked clearly.

Wife got polled last night. Interesting range of questions with opinions sought on international students (yes) amongst them. She quite likes Nikki Kaye, is agnostic on Muller and thinks Jacinda doing ok to well. We disagree clearly. But agree on the 17 empty cabinet chairs. The Nats need to stop getting sucked into identity non-issues and “stick to their knitting” of economy, jobs, smart spending. The alternative after September is the new “worst” government ever.

  Agree. National need to set out a platform for all MPs and candidates over the next few weeks:
  – Agree that Ardern provided excellent leadership over Covid crisis. Borders should have been closed a week earlier, but apart from that a largely flawless performance.
  – As a result of the shutdown, the country is facing an uncertain economic future. No point in getting angry about business taking action to protect their future. Need to work with business to get out of this.
  – Apart from answering questions with the first statement above, ignore Ardern – she is basically untouchable. Lange beat Muldoon by ignoring him. Key beat Clark by ignoring her. Offer a positive, effective Government in waiting.

    Goldsmith was very good in an interview with Sean Plunket between midday and 1pm. He’s accusing the Government of not having a plan beyond “Debt-fuelled Government spending on an industrial scale”, and it’s hard to argue with that. The Crown Accounts to 31 March which came out today are very sobering, with a deficit of $13 billion, and net debt already having increased by $20 billion; with way more to come.

On a side note while unofficial the jump in party support has been significant to date and expected to continue with the new leadership team. the effort the Left are putting into trying to take down Todd and Co is I believe driven by the internal polling that has seen a significant shift.

Latest idiotic gibbering from the orange Buffoon-In-Chief – that the 75 year old man who was pushed down by two police officers was “scanning” police equipment.

I work in radio communications. This is my field. And there is just so much stupid here it’s hard to know where to start.

Law enforcement radio systems in the US will most commonly be using a digital radio standard called P25. And if it’s using encryption, you will not be able to listen in. Full stop. Period. It doesn’t matter how close you are, or how long you have to try and crack it. Unless you have the encryption key, it will all be gibberish.

And if the traffic is not encrypted… then you don’t have any need to be right up in the officers face. A commercial scanner would let you effortlessly hear every word they say from several miles away.

There is simply no reason somebody attempting to listen in on the police would need to be that close. It is just an utterly nonsense explanation.

    Looks like a smartphone to me, so filming the actions of the police is the logical explanation.
    
    But the RF physics is very simple here. For any radio equipment used by police, the signal strength would be far more than enough from a quarter to half a mile away. Whether his intent was to listen in, to jam them, or to play them some Buddy Holly as encouragement. There would simply be no reason he would have needed to get that close and put himself in harms way.

      I would agree with you 100% if you were talking about scanning normal comms radio equipment (aka walkie-talkies) with a scanner.
      
      But that’s not all there is to scanning as in “scanning police equipment”.
      
      NFC and BTLE cannot be scanned from half a mile away with a handheld device. Maybe with a high gain Yagi or such.
      
      Nor is radio the only way that equipment can be “scanned”. For example, barcodes can be scanned and plenty military any police gear has barcodes on it for logistics purposes. In South Africa in 1984/5 we were using lasers to cut barcodes onto rifles for asset tracking purposes.
      
      I think this poor old fool got set up by Antifa to provoke a nice photo op. Put an app on his phone and tell him that if he waves it close enough to a policeman he can get a virus onto their radio net and shut down all the police comms.
      
      They know this is bullshit, but he believes his new antifa mates and does it. They know this will cause some incident with the cops but he thinks he’s helping fight “The Man”.
      
      Cops justifiably act predictably and defensively and everyone gets their photo op of “police brutality”.
      
      Poor old coot ends up in hospital, but who cares about him eh? Disposable old boomer.

        I fully acknowledge that he could just be an old coot that got too close, but I would push back on the cops having done the wrong thing and over reacted.
        
        The cops reacted in exactly the right way to a highly suspicious action of a person within stabbing distance.
        
        The cop has to deal with incomplete information, does not know the mental state of the person, if they have a weapon or not.
        
        It is all very well to sit down with ten different video angles and replay the scene after the fact, but the cop on the spot has no such luxury. They have limited information. They must act defensively in a heightened environment.
        
        I don’t think there are too many dots to line up though. He was there with Antifa. He might have then acted alone, but it is very likely they gave him a task.

      You can film them from a fair distance away. If your goal is to film the cops then you don’t have to get within a few cm of the cop. That makes not sense.

        Filming police at a protest, well of course you want to be as close as possible. By default people have the right to stand wherever the hell they want. The police should have just cause to tell people to move on. And in this case they absolutely did not.

        If you want to video police tactics it makes absolutely no sense to get within a few cm of a cop. Have you ever used a phone’s video camera? From that range all you see is wobble.
        
        If you wanted to take photos of equipment you do not need to get closer than a few metres. You’d get a clear picture from that distance. All the stuff can be filmed from a distance away.
        
        Sure, I partially agree with you about Rx sensitivity. But if you want to scan from far with a very high gain antenna it is very challenging to scan a moving target. NFC is even more challenging but a metre or so is still easyish. If he was really trying to scan (and was knowledgeable) then he could have done it from a clandestine device in his pocket.
        
        From a technical point of view, getting to within a few cm to scan something via radio makes very little sense. Thus, I believe he was conned into it by his Antifa mates bullshitting him.
        
        Nobody has a right to come within stabbing distance of a cop acting suspiciously with what could be a weapon.

  I too understand a bit about electronics and P25 and I likely also worked for that same company in the same building you did for a while.
  
  There are more things than P25 radio, or mobile radio in general, to be scanned. There’s a whole lot more to on-body electronics than just comms radios. These days there’s a good chance cops have BT and NFC comms on some equipment.
  
  That said, some weirdo “trying to scan” is a very different thing to making a technically feasible scan. It could be this old coot thought he could use his cellphone to scan the cop for being a cyborg or an alien. Who the hell knows!
  
  What the hell he’s trying to scan there I don’t know, but waving an unknown item in a cop’s personal space is an aggressive act and that cop did the right thing to act defensively.
  
  Given that there are taser-like devices disguised to look like cellphones, an item waved around like that is to be treated as a threat and taken seriously.
  
  The cop does not have the choice of having a 20 minute discussion. He only has a second to act with very limited information.
  
  I think he did the right thing in the circumstances.

What is it, four or five people murdered in NZ in the last week or so?

Three month old murdered in South Auckland, human remains found just off the Desert Road and three arrested, ‘brutally beaten’ four year old finally released from Starship after many months but with a very tough road still ahead, immigrant health worker murdered on the North Shore, gang violence claims Rogue member in the Waikato, a one-year-old murdered in Clover Park, three men shot in Mt Roskill, one man shot dead in Otara, one man murdered in Manurewa.

And not one hikoi, not one single person marching up Queen St or Lambton Quay, not one march on Parliament.

One person killed by policeman in another country and suddenly there are mass protests here in little old NZ.

Why do you think this is? Why the double-standards? Why are there not similar mass demonstrations at the Chinese treatment of their minorities? Putin’s treatment of his opponents and who are regularly murdered? Wholesale state murder in parts of Africa? Minorities hacking each other to death on London streets? Sunnis and Shia blowing each other up killing dozens at a time with such frequency we’ve become blase about it?

It is the WOMEN who have suffered because of the covid-19 lockdown levels. Their loss of their businesses, their financial losses, the loss of their jobs and the impact of these losses.
The ways her policies have had a detrimental effect on women and how they have been the victims of those policies.
This will remove her major influence the support of the segment of the population she represents.

I really feel sorry for Greg Foran and the team at Air NZ. The NZ media has decided to use them as whipping boy for all the frustrations the NZ public and the lockdown effects. As part of NZ’s small minded navel gazing, the bulk of the population is focusing on their $200 that Air NZ owes them from their flight to Queenstown that didn’t go ahead.

Easy target for the left wing NZ, pathetic, media and gains a lot of eye balls and engagement with the NZ households.

Air NZ is facing serious cash flow issues and to be honest their Air NZ refunds, in the scheme of things are small fish compared to some of the other issues facing NZ. I don’t think they would have done any worse in handling this, than any other airline round the world at present.

Incidentally I was glad to see the CEO of the Warehouse stating this week, that the recent 1000 redundancies, are in part due to the lockdown decisions of Ardern and co, not entirely due to the retail landscape approaching the covid lockdown.

Would be good if some of this attention by the NZ media turned to some of the long term effects of Ardern’s over zealous lockdown will have on NZ for many years to come. She seems to escape any proper scrutiny. Was good to see Fran O’Sullivan’s piece today in the Herald, suggesting Ardern should take a holiday, for hers and the good of NZ.

    If they’d taken the same kind of fiscally irresponsible path that Labour are taking now, we’d have had so much debt that the country would have been unable to borrow what Labour are borrowing now due to excessive risk and insufficient equity (we’d have been technically insolvent).

Kiwi fashion designer Ingrid Starnes favoured by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced the “devastating” closure of its stores, due to the impact of Covid-19.

The brand’s co-founder and managing director, Simon Pound, said after 10 years Ingrid Starnes was closing its stores.

It had taken on debt just before lockdown started for a new shop at the $1 billion Commercial Bay development in Auckland’s CBD.

Pound said: “The Covid-19 disruption has been the kind of disruption that if you are at full stretch can be insurmountable.

In a Facebook post the designer, whose clothes were worn by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on her Time magazine cover, said, “We were caught at full stretch by Covid-19 and can not responsibly make another season after months of trade being down more than 80 per cent and debts accumulating.”

  Problem is these closures, as with the thousands of others that don’t make the headlines, have nothing to do with Covid-19.
  
  They are 100% caused by the unnecessary reaction by the current clowns to the possibility of Covid-19, a totally different thing.

  The organiser of the rally to pull down the Cecil Rhodes statue in Oxford has been Ndjodi Ndeunyema, a law student and former Rhodes scholar.
  
  Ndeunyema’s education has been partly funded by a trust set up by the 19th century colonialist.
  
  He is reported in the Daily Mail as saying “Rhodes is not worthy of veneration or glorification because of the racism and subjugation he represents”.
  
  Perhaps Ndeunyema and other Rhodes beneficiaries among the protesters should give back the money.

Major backdown from Andrew Little today:

The minister in charge of the Pike River Mine recovery effort, Andrew Little, says it is “just impractical” to expect the remains of all of the fallen miners to be recovered.

Instead, the re-entry efforts are now essentially solely focused on gathering evidence in the “homicide of 29 men”, Little told a select committee hearing this morning.

The 29 miners died in an explosion at the mine in November 2010.

Speaking to MPs this morning, Little also revealed that there would be no further funding for re-entry.

This comes after the cost of the project has more than doubled since its inception.

Re-entry originally had a $23 million budget but the Government has already spent roughly $35m and that that could reach as high as $50m.

But that, according to Little, is the absolute funding limit.

“There is always a limit to these things – I have no plan or intention of returning to Cabinet for any further additional resources.”

Andrew Little has finally come to the same realisation that John Key did; that it is impracticable to safely recover any human remains from Pike River mine. Doubtless there will be another emotional reaction from “the families” tonight on TV, but the reality is that not all the families want recovery operations to continue, and a number simply want to move on.

It’s just a shame that Labour’s promise to the Pike River families has cost New Zealand more than $50 million. Once the current evidence-gathering is complete, Pike River needs to be permanently sealed.

  What possible evidence lay inside the access tunnel what wasn’t already available? It doesn’t seem the diggers will get further in than the access tunnel.
  
  Creating indignation about “homicide” must be to divert voters’ anger about the $50 million of taxpayer money wasted.

  This is something that I’ve been following closely.
  
  Interestingly, when down in ChCh for some spinal cord surgery I ended up going for a walk and sitting on a bench next to a chap who used to lay the explosives at the head of the mine at Pike River – he had the good fortune to break an ankle a few days before the explosion.
  
  Having followed the event closely I was keen to talk to him about the latest recovery effort. I asked him how they’d get past the rockfall to reach the deceased – he said “they won’t”.
  
  Roll forward a year and … he was 100% correct.
  
  As others have astutely alluded to, this was never about recovering bodies – it was only ever a political publicity stunt.
  
  This is what REALLY pisses me off about Labour; they have so many sucked in to believing that “they’re the party that cares about people” when the reality is they’ll milk any disaster like Pike River – or the ChCh massacre – or White Island – or COVID to pull on heart strings to get votes. National on the other hand are about business success – which in-turn means greater tax revenue – which in-turn means more money available to fund social policy.
  
  Labour are incompetent custodians of the country and shameless exploiters of human misery. And STILL the clueless public think they’re angels sent by god to save us.

What is the point of this whole exercise then? Little is now admitting to what I said in the first instance. I have doubts as to whether they will even recover a single body.

How many lives could have been saved if the pike river recovery money had just been given to pharmac?

  they may be lucky to retrieve even 1 bodie, those boys were miners they work deep in a mine extracting coal not leaning on shovels at the end of the entrance drift, saftey protocol would dictate where survivors are to assemble in emergency and correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure that is far beyond where this operation can access.
  this will likely end up being the most expensive evidence gathering procedure in nz history… and thats if they even find the source of explosion.
  My prediction is nothing usefull comes of it and it becomes NZs most expensive grave. (No offence to victims and family, an old co worker of mine is still in there R.I.P)

Now that the crisis is over, everything is back to normal and all is sweetness and light, isn’t to just lovely that the team captain can muse about those dark days when she was staring down the virus and rolling up her sleeves to save us all from a fate much, much, much worse than death.
Perhaps she would do well to reflect on a much more damaging crisis that is facing not only the current team, but a couple of generations yet to start playing.

First up for the chop: Edward Gibbon Wakefield, a pioneer instigator of colonial settlement of New Zealand, who also helped settlement of the convict-free state of South Australia.

Former Australian Federal Cabinet Minister Christopher Pyne has called for the renaming of the Adelaide electorate of Wakefield, because it was named for Edward Gibbon Wakefield. Pyne says Wakefield was “convicted child abductor”.

According to the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, Wakefield at the age of 20 eloped with a 16-year-old girl. She died after becoming his wife, and ten years after his marriage Wakefield abducted a 15-year-old girl with the plan of making her his wife. The unconsummated marriage was annulled and Wakefield went to prison. It was while studying while a prisoner that he came up with his colonisation ideas.

The Encyclopedia says critics fail to see that the qualities which allowed Wakefield to deviate from the norms of acceptable conduct also enabled him to be an intellectual innovator.

Australia’s Woke are also after the statue of Charles Cameron Kingston in Adelaide’s Victoria Square, where “Black Lives Matter” protesters gathered on Saturday. Kingston is regarded as one of the godfathers of the White Australia policy.

Don’t know about you but since we went to Level 1 and businesses have been allowed to re-open in Whangarei, the level of service and courtesy has improved substantially.

I now feel that our custom and support for local business has created an improved awareness of the need to treat paying customers well.

There was one Auckland company that took the opportunity to raise their prices substantially and we now no longer deal with them.

Live and learn.

    You must ask, how did we get today’s morality?
    From learning from past wrongs, mistakes etc.
    We learned and abolished slavery.
    You could say, by destroying the reminders, you are NOT learning from the past.
    and

Scott Hamilton, who hasn’t showed up at Kiwiblog for a while, is at Wide a-Woke strength in the Hooerald today, on European statues in New Zealand.

This time he’s described as a “pakeha historian”.

Hamilton is scathing about NZ towns’ “von Tempsky” streets and says we should consider:

” …the many Irish and Scottish migrants who sympathised with and even fought alongside Maori against the British, or supplied ammunition and weapons to Te Kooti, or those who themselves were brought to New Zealand as slaves or in forced labour.”

Irish and Scots slaves? What are you on about, Scott? It was the Maori who were a slave society, and a lot more Maori fought on the British side than vice-versa.

The Hooerald report also quotes a Poverty Bay Maori rubbishing Captain Cook and saying of him: “His connections with slavery are also rarely discussed.”

A Maori talking about white slave ownership. Jesus wept!

The Hooerald is so Left wing its head is over its left shoulder and up its arse. Still, we won’t have to decide for much longer not to buy it.
