Dead Earnest

When does the governments powers under the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act expire?
Comment on this blog recently suggested it was 15th of August.
If so, is the current lock down in Auckland able to be legally enforced?
Or have I got this wrong?

  Unless something has been done since the act received assent, it has a 90 day sunset provision, which expires today.

  90 Days from that date is August 11. The Repeal section of the act is here:

  And it is confusing to me. 90 days? Sure, that’s mentioned. If it is automatically repealed after 90 days what’s the 2 years clause about? Has the House made such a resolution to extend, or has the House changed the “relevant period” as it has the power to do?”
  
  The country is back in partial lockdown. Is it likely no such extension has been made? If so, the lockdown can’t be enforced.

    Basically the provisions mean it can be extended beyond 90 days by Parliament, but in any event, it cannot be extended beyond 2 years. But it was extended on 5 August under urgency

  I note that David Seymour of Act is the only opposition politician coming out against the government’s virus strategy –

  I think that’s right. You cannot lock down every time we have a few cases of the virus. We will simply run out of money.
  
  In short we are going to have to learn to live with this and manage it. The government’s goal of elimination is simply unrealistic and does more harm than good.

    Community out break was enviable the fuckwits now tell us. Then where was the better plan than Level 4 lockdown?
    
    Level 4 lockdown was a panic response when Ardern shat herself and said 80,000 people were going to die. That has not panned out of course.
    
    With all the time where is the better plan than lock up level 4?

    On The Nation today, Judith was absolutely clear. National is going for an elimination strategy. The reason being we are an island nation and should be able to control the border. She is going to announce the details of how National will do this.
    Those who support the Swedish approach will have to vote Act. From what I understand Seymour leans toward the Swedish approach, though he also stresses much stronger border control. He may be having a bet both ways.

        Money over lives is a false dichotomy. The same amount of lives will be lost in the final analysis, so why spend billions on utter delusion and folly? We can have a steep curve, or a flat curve, but that is just rates: the absolute numbers will always be similar.
        
        The way we are tracking, we will (and have already) spend 100s of billions putting off what are entirely inevitable deaths. It will be costly in terms of lives lost no matter what, so it is retarded to destroy the economy for the next 50 years for no real reason, other than the short-term political benefit of people who will have long moved on when the debt is still on the books. No amount of whining irrationality will ever change that fact.

  Ryan Bridge is an excellent broadcaster. He’s a social liberal, fiscal conservative and well informed. Which is rare for a younger person these days. Yesterday, he had ring in and be the PM. Bonus points were given for using Jacinda’s favourite sound bites. It was hilarious. Jacinda has never fronted on Magic Talk.     Paying for an epidemic of stupidity
    
    We’ve handed control of our lives to a clown car packed with idiots who have wasted billions trying to defeat this virus. They will never admit it was all for nothing.

    Back in the good old days, the average person used to take pride in having a robust grasp of basic maths: enough mental arithmetic not to be overcharged at the shops, enough skill with pen and paper to make more complex calculations.
    
    Not any more, it seems. Many of our finest minds are infected with a new innumeracy that, in today’s fevered environment, distorts our understanding of, and response to, the coronavirus threat.
    
    In early April, as the disease was just beginning to bite, the team manning the ABC’s coronavirus news website promised to answer questions about the pandemic.
    
    When a reader asked for help in interpreting some infection-rate statistics, it provoked a cheerful response, broadcast to the world: “This just sparked a heated newsroom discussion in which we all outed ourselves as being terrible at maths.” You don’t say.
    
    They’re only — some might say barely — journalists, however. They don’t need the mastery of figures that our leaders display so magnificently. So for a moment of light relief, let’s examine the numbers that currently unnerve them. If we cancelled Victoria’s lockdown immediately, and its cases were permitted to grow at 1000 a day, the whole state would be infected in no time. By “no time”, of course, I mean 18 years. No wonder they’re frightened: at that rate it could sweep through the entire country in little more than 70 years. Luckily, in recent times we have been adding 1000 people to our population every day. Phew. Dodged a bullet there.
    
    Worldwide, excess deaths from COVID-19 (generously assuming every victim died from, rather than just with, the virus) are around 700,000. Given the roughly 60 million deaths the world records each year, it’s as though 2020 had 369 days in it, rather than 366.
    
    If that thought chills you, congratulations! A lavishly pensioned, undemanding and unaccountable career in politics beckons.

    New Zealand is lauded as the perfect example of how to crush the virus, but would anyone be surprised if it too has to pay the price somewhere down the line? Four new cases locked down the 1.6 million inhabitants of Auckland this week in a monstrously excessive overreaction that would be comical were it not so destructive.
    
    Meanwhile, the rest of New Zealand has shut down so completely it has effectively removed itself as a nation from the international community. It’s as though the country had never existed. Soon it will be reduced to a fading Cheshire Cat image of its Prime Minister’s saintly sad face.
    
    Let’s hope for the Kiwis’, and everyone else’s, sake a vaccine is found soon, although the World Health Organisation now warns we may never have one. It’s a tired line to repeat, but even after 40-odd years of searching we don’t have one for HIV-AIDS.
    
    Which, if anyone needs reminding, still kills 2600 people a day.

      Sigh. A big grumble. It’s worthwhile taking a good look at Sweden. It’s not as simple as many would have us believe.
      
      Something like 6k oldies died. Many were triaged out of hospital care and left to die wherever they were, so the hospitals were not overwhelmed.
      
      The death rate has since dropped off to buggerall. This might be the “herd immunity” thing but noone really knows – antibody tests have sort of fallen out of favour and now there is talk of T-cells but they are a bit hard to monitor.
      
      Behaviour-wise the country is at something like level 1. People are exhorted to be sensible and it seems that they are. No big gatherings, restrictions on restaurants/bars etc etc.
      
      Economically the place took a hit. I have seen numbers that said their hit was the same as Norway and Denmark – a bit less than Germany and a whole lot less than the UK. Go figure.
      
      Inbound tourist bed nights are about 50% of what they were 12 months ago. In-country tourism has dropped off a whole lot.
      
      So it’s not simple …

  Elimination is a proven strategy. It worked before and it will work even faster this time. No one enjoys lockdowns. It’s particularly sour for us because we tasted a freedom for two months that most of the world didn’t have. But it will work and we will be back to the rugby soon.
  
  Our health processes are improving. We are writing the textbook on elimination as we go so there will be missteps. But we can perfect this system. Don’t fall for people telling you things are hopeless after three days in lockdown. Instead, demand stringent health procedures from our border.
  
  Hold fast people. Get through the next two weeks.

Currently staying with friend in Queenstown. So am watching TV. Which I don’t normally do.

So yesterday evening friend had 3 NEWS on. This reporter was pontificating on the latest COVID events. And she referred to “irresponsible politicians” challenging the government. Then she cited Gerry Brownlee as an example.

Then she doubled down and reported on Hipkins urging the public to rely on Government statements as “the single source of truth”.

And that is why New Zealand TV “news” should be allowed to die.

Just when you think you have seen peak stupidity along comes another one. The government is moving ALL infected people into quarantine. Because experience had shown that not all people can be trusted to self isolate. There is no singling out of Maori.

Yet this academic claims that the outbreak has “disproportionately affected Māori and Pasifika people.” Really? Maybe it is a racist virus. ?

This news article raises the question of whether the media should report every stupid statement unchallenged.

      Last time it took forever to close clusters because the overcrowded families couldn’t really self isolate and lived in poor conditions.
      
      I think the truth is these families were concerned about their ability to contain this outbreak amongst whanau and were willing for the extra help.

        Your strategy sounds like one where if you catch Covid, there should be no quarantine. Which is the same as the herd immunity strategy.
        Now that’s perfectly valid if that’s what you mean, but be up front about it.
        
        Or is your strategy that the mandatory quarantine is only for white people?
        
        And remember: We went to mandatory isolation facilities because people were not self isolating when they got back. They were going on holiday trips.

        Do you have experience of Social workers t d f k a nigel6888?I think you will find most social workers are kind caring and pretty damn accomodating of people who need their help. I managed a social service agency or many years and the staff were all falling over backwards to help, definitely not angry lecturers. So unless you have had personal experience in which case you should have spoken to the agency manager regarding that and another social worker would have been appointed to help you.

        When all the clever plans fail, and destroy the economy on the way down, perhaps the sensible one is worth considering.
        
        For the avoidance of doubt, I believe the Swedish approach is far more sensible than panicked periodic lockdowns and 400,000 people on emergency benefits and wage subsidies. Fair enough?

That was about some idiot saying that quarantine is racist and patronising when in fact it is a time honoured strategy to deal with infectious diseases, that this quarantine strategy is a four to five star experience, and nothing like a “cell” as you asserted, and applies to everyone regardless of circumstance, not just to brown skinned people as aforementioned idiot was saying

        They caught covid. No matter what they aren’t going back to work until they aren’t infectious anymore. Just like if they caught measles, or the flu, or chicken pox.
        
        If it is a choice being confined to your home looking after yourself or staying in a hotel with free food and sky sports, some may find the latter experience better.

  There was an interview on TVNZ the other day with a South Auckland Pacific Islands church leader who stated many of his perishers were too scared to get tested for COVID-19 because they were illegal immigrants. How the eF are we to cease the spread of this thing when that attitude and it’s acceptance prevails?
  The preacher was calling for an amnesty for illegals, which I vehemently oppose.

The poor owner is being vilified after being told by CCDHB that they have a conformed case and will announce the news yesterday at 1pm. And then hid the information at the Bloomfield show. He published the news on his page at 1pm–responsibly to warn his other customers.

Collins has stated that NZ doesn’t want the Swedish approach, so National is definitely not going for the risks initially involved with herd immunity. Just like Ardern, National wants us to remain in a safe pacific bubble until vaccination is available.

  What practical difference does it make if we are locked down under National rather than under Labour? The near homogeneity of opinion (and it is just opinion) makes me wonder if we are actually a sovereign nation in any real sense of the concept.

    But if the NZ public is too fearful of the Swedish approach, what can Collins do? Unless Dr Reti starts talking about the herd immunity approach.
    
    We should note that the Swedish health minister thought overall herd immunity would give a better *health* outcome. Being locked away in our homes with reduced rights is not healthy. Losing our livelihoods is not healthy. Not getting other medical procedures is not healthy.
    
    Even if health was really the only consideration because that’s all New Zealanders cared about, Dr Reti and the rest of National need to say how many health disadvantages there are in endless lockups and a ruined economy.

      I have real health concerns too. Where I live, we have to drain a glass of wine every time Jacinda uses the word “kind”, and my head is splitting today.       Harris is a Democrat, and they all hate white people, even the whites in the party. The US Left in 2020 are either non-whites with racial grievances who have a vendetta, or self-loathing whites. They are radicals. They are not the party of Clinton and Gore any more.
      
      Observe and consider the immense corporate and state largess being thrown at the racist blacks in BLM. If whites behaved in exactly the same fashion as the BLM rioters and looters have been, they would be murdered in the streets by law enforcement agencies or locked up for life. But the privileged black narcissists? Nothing. Just lots of money and all charges dropped (if there ever were any). This is because doing so is fully consistent with the establishment agenda.
      
      The equation is this: All white people = “white supremacists” = “Nazis.” Just listen to their own rhetoric and understand the logical conclusions. By dehumanising an entire group in this way, exploiting them becomes a moral act, even a moral imperative. Reparations for slavery (which is a widely advocated policy on the American left) will entail, by definition, slavery of the mostly tax paying whites, based on the “you work, I eat” principle. They are moral relativists. To them, slavery and oppression are not bad in themselves, only when it is “done to us.” I have never claimed that all of this is not very disturbing, but I do say that it is happening before our eyes. America will likely mirror South Africa under a Harris presidency (Biden has no intention of taking the oath).
      
      Moreover, the “historical American people” are one, and only one, group: the British settlers who formed the 13 original colonies on the East Coast, that later combined to became the United States of America (which, btw is the meaning of ‘E Pluribus Unum’ – “Out of many, one” – not an open invitation to all-comers). And, certainly, these European colonists did in fact conquer the disparate, warring, and savage Indian tribes who previously inhabited the undeveloped land mass on which America sits. Conquest by force is legitimate. The difference now is that America is being given away. If some group of foreigners had come and taken it by force, at least I could respect that. But it has been willingly destroyed with the help of internal subversives.

Given that Winston is presently employed as Deputy Prime Minister, of a Government that supposedly is responsible for the well-being of every New Zealander, has be discussed his acquired knowledge (substantiated or not) with the Prime Minister or Bloomfield?

Who’s side is Winston on?
Australian’s who watch Patricia Karvelas, his own side (Election oxygen while Ardern steals most of what is available), the media, or the virus?
Apparently he is not on his employer’s side or that of those who vote for him, because he spoke to Australian Television (to get his name out there) before talking to Ardern.

“That the latest outbreak is due to a breach inside our quarantine system” or anywhere in the ‘border’, is the only conclusion that on current science is available, otherwise it means New Zealand has it own spontaneously emerged virus, covid NZ 20.

So Winston is correct, but if proven to not be so, he can blame it on a “journalist”, adding even the most reliable of them can now mislead you.

Otherwise no “journalist” is involved – after all it is Winston’s word, which court cases have indicated is not always reliable – and this is just the same a pre-last Election, with a slight twist in the modus operandi.

The sooner Shane looses Northland and New Zealand First goes down the gurgler, the better.

I’d like an update… Have any of the Cabinet phoned Winston Peters yet to find out what he knows about the virus outbreak origin? It is possible that Peters or his journalist are wrong, and that’d be discovered when the claims are checked. But, it seems criminally irresponsible to not even check with the Deputy PM if he does know. Thousands of people could be infected. Dozens could die. Hundreds of thousands of people could lose their jobs in an extended lockdown, and all because Winston Peters knew what was going on and Ardern couldn’t be bothered to ask him.

  The DoJ IG reviewed 29 FISA warrant applications. Their report in March said there were small errors in several – which wasn’t surprising in terms of there being small errors in long complex documents.
  
  So the DOJ’s National Security Division reviewed all 29 FISA applications. Their report came out in July. “The Justice Department’s review of the same 29 applications identified only one material misstatement and one material omission. In the Justice Department’s assessment, neither error merits invalidation of the warrant authorizations granted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.”
  
  What’s **most** important to remember is that the DOJ IG found the Russia investigation was properly predicated and opened **11 months** before Clinesmith altered the email. He was an idiot who got lazy and falsified a document to make it easier to prepare an application that would have been granted away. It wasn’t a conspiracy and it didn’t affect the investigation.       Question: If you had to write 29 complex documents, each of over 100 pages, **would you guarantee an auditor couldn’t find an error in those documents**? **Could you guarantee all 3,000 pages or so would be “scrupulously accurate”?**

        But you are lying ! What the report you are citing highlights is that minor errors are common in FISA aaplications and that these are rarely critical issues. But in the Page FISA there were at least 17 serious flaws, showing that in that case special problems occurred.
        
        To be blunt, that Page FISA was illegally obtained under false pretences, and people will be charged and indicted over it. It was a criminal conspiracy to spy on the Trump campaign to try to ensure that Clinton won, far worse than Watergate. And maybe the truth will finally start to come out.

        Let’s look at exactly what Clinesmith did and has pled guilty to.
        
        In a ‘follow-on’ FISA application regarding Carter Page he added the words “Not a [CIA] source.” (As in, Carter Page was not a CIA source).
        
        When asked by an FBI agent if CIA had represented *in writing* to Clinesmith that Page was not a CIA source Clinesmith said yes – when actually the CIA had confirmed it to him verbally, but not in writing.
        
        As far as I’m aware that’s it.
        
        No one appears to be alleging that Carter Page was actually a CIA source. Just that Clinesmith said the CIA had confirmed in writing when it had actually been verbal.
        
        I think the system is working in that that’s been uncovered, he’s been charged, and pled guilty. But let’s not kid ourselves that this was a significant mis-representation that the application rested on. And let’s remember that FISA warranted surveillance of Page started 11 months before this event took place.

        If there was indeed a criminal conspiracy then Trump has had three and a half years to uncover it. And hasn’t.
        
        In that same period of time Trump’s campaign manager, deputy campaign manager, first National Security Advisor, personal political advisor and personal lawyer have all been investigated, tried and are either imprisoned or awaiting sentence. So clearly there’s been time to look at what people have done and hold them to account.
        
        That says to me that the “criminal conspiracy” you’re alleging (a) didn’t take place and (b) is just bluster from a habitual liar.
        
        Pro tip: Trump projects. The things he alleges others are doing, or have done, are actually the things he has done. It’s a behavioural tic. He’d make a shit poker player.

      In this case, they were talking to the family for a long time over lockdown, and my view is that Bloomfield made quarantine mandatory because some or all of them wouldn’t co-operate. If that is right, it’s not because of their colour but because of their disregard for whether it is spread to others, and that has always been grounds for putting people in quarantine.

  Well, if only that were true. However it is so tantalising and perfect it reads like an urban myth to me. But a number of logic issues there. I read none of the deportees likely to have the virus because they were already in quarantine. No instances of aussies with the virus in that period. The hotel they were in was extra security and guarded by police, not just security guards. If true, surely the press would have followed this up? Sounds too much like a story from a mate who says it’s true to me. However if it is true and it’s been covered up, it would bring these guys down. The cover up is what gets you in the end, Nixon etc. But i am not buying it. Too easy.

And the said lockdown benefits are now proving to be questionable.

Now Jacinda is trying to spin it on last night’s announcement that NZers should feel proud that they beat the virus for at least 102 days. Lets keep moving–the goal posts.

TV3’s news last night hit a new low for me. Lots of Covid news. Fine, understand that. But then ‘in other news’ they ran a Trump story. Not the signing of the historical agreement between Israel and the UAE which he’d help broker (and which would have earned Obama a second Nobel Peace Prize). Nope, a story about Trump’s intentions to change regulations regarding shower sprinklers because he was having trouble washing his hair. Did we hear him say that? No. Was the story sourced? Was it even true? Who cares? Not TV3 news, as the story ended with the TV3 fronting duo falling about, mocking Trump. BTW, they completely ignored his Middle East peace deal. Go figure.

In light of this new covid outbreak perhaps National/ACT need to rethink their strategy?

What we do know is that many “people” (sure, not all) and the MSM it seems are “scared” of covid and when people are scared rationality goes out the window (eg people panic buy, people disregard job losses as not being as important as being safe etc).

So reduce “attacking” the govt on small issues as people and MSM don’t like their “savior” being attacked again it seems (leave any “attacks” for major issues), but instead concentrate on these:

*Praising the health workers (many of them are working ridiculously long hours eg 16 hour days).

*Give praise to Dr Bloomfield when things go well (again he is another “savior” of the “people” – people will like that).

*Gain confidence and trust of health professionals so that they pass on any frustrations to the Opposition parties when they feel the Govt is failing/lying about important issues (eg lack of PPE, flu vaccines etc).

That is, National/ACT to be their champion and defenders!

Now in some ways this has been happening (eg medical professionals passing info onto Woodhouse/Bridges previously and now National has Reti, an actual doctor which is fantastic), but again National/ACT needs to be championing them even more than they have in the past.

This gets past the “people are scared and thus distrust National” meme being projected by Labour (and their MSM repeaters).

Because this is National/ACT’s big problem (and NZF too, if they thought about it), the people/MSM perceive (incompetent) Labour as being on top of things and (competent) National/ACT as being not!

Yes it is another Orwellian type situation, but that’s the reality (when people/MSM are scared of a virus that is not nice but at the end of the day causes less deaths that the average flu season)!

Best things of all, is Labour can’t do a thing (in fact it would be what Labour would be doing themselves if they were the Opposition)!

Because anyone with any wealth or influence in China must necessarily achieve that status via political relationships. That is part of the definition of ‘totalitarian’ regimes. Hopkins spins the percentage of workers being tested — 40% or 60% ?

Hipkins is trying distraction on the CoLs testing debacle by saying Jet Park hotel alone in Auckland has had 60% staff tested every week.

This is a clever phrased lie. It tries to distract from the fact that over 60% have NOT been tested if you take all operating isolation and quarantine centers into account. Any worker in these establishments, not just Jet Park in Auckland, could pickup infections from incoming travelers who are pre-symptomatic, waiting-for-tests, or waiting for test results.

Hope media call him out today 🙂
