      In Carlson’s defence the guy is a small brained moron who was being utterly rude and disgraceful. Bregman’s pathetic and his ideas simply don’t work. Carlson apologised for his words but stands by them.
      
      For the record, I’ve watched/listened to the whole exchange. Bregman wants the president to force all manufacturing back into the US to recreate the middleclass of the 50s (so the government can tax them into the ground). Carlson called him out on the impossibility of that and the smarmy Bregman just started to attack him.

    Just wanted to wait a while to see how many Trumpers were awake this morning to respond to my post. Probably got all who are going to respond today! I wondered if intelligent KB bloggers might be aware of Fox News and some of the Fox people we are talking about.
    Worth reading is the case filed on 20 July 2020 in the USDC Southern District of New York – Jennifer Eckhart and Cathy Areu v Fox News Network, Ed Henry, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Howard Kurtz, in their individual and professional capacities.
    The plaintiffs are demanding a Jury Trial.
    
    The Preliminary Statement reads as follows:
    “ 1) It is widely documented in the public record that Fox News has not only cultivated and fostered sexual harassment and misconduct, but has consistently accepted and rewarded it. Nevertheless, Fox News would have the public believe that it is a different place from the Fox News that was run by former disgraced Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes. Unfortunately, it is actually worse.
    2) As described in detail herein, Fox News continues to protect and reward perpetrators of sexual harassment and refuses to take accountability for putting such persons in positions of power from which they can subject women to sexual misconduct, sexual assault and, in the case of Ms Eckhart, rape. Some of the names in leadership may have changed since Roger Ailes’ regime, but Fox News’ institutional apathy towards sexual misconduct has not.”
    So, if this is your favoured source of News, that’s fine, you can give your wholehearted support to an organisation with a history of abuse of women.

As overall deaths rise, Covid-19 deaths continue to fall

This week’s update from the Office for National Statistics revealed 9,392 deaths in England and Wales in the week ending 14 August, an increase of almost 450 on deaths registered the previous week. Deaths in week 33 amounted to 3.4 per cent above the five-year average – the first time deaths were above average since the week ending 12 June, when Covid-19 was more prevalent in Britain. However, despite the number of deaths ticking up in the most recent week for which we have data, Covid-19 deaths continued to fall: ‘139 mentioned “novel coronavirus (Covid-19)”, the lowest number of deaths involving Covid-19 in the past 21 weeks and an 8.6% decrease compared with week 32 (152 deaths).’ Moreover, deaths in hospitals also registered below the five-year average.

Covid-19 is only attributed to 1.5 per cent of all deaths in England and Wales now. So how do we account for the increase in deaths in week 33, if the number of Covid-19 deaths has reduced for the 17th week in a row? According to the ONS, Britain’s heatwave in mid-August is likely to have increased the number of overall deaths: It will have proved particularly challenging for ‘vulnerable people, for example, those with pre-existing respiratory or cerebrovascular diseases’. While the latest numbers remain provisional, data from several years back shows high numbers of deaths for days categorised as ‘heatwaves’. Still, the decrease in Covid-19 deaths combined with an increased number of deaths in private homes and care homes (based on the five-year average) lead to broader questions about the role of lockdown in excess deaths, including those putting off GP and hospital visits or those who have had their treatments and surgeries for serious conditions cancelled.

  There we go – the people who are due to die anyway, are dying of “something” even if it is not Covid-19. People who still possess half a brain got this all along. It is not “numbers of deaths” we are “preventing” by committing economic hara-kiri and setting up different people for death in the long term; we are perhaps altering the time of death by a few months at most, for the people in the population who were about to die anyway of whatever hit them first.
  
  I fully expect NZ’s death rate, which is remarkably low at the moment compared to other nations who have had more lockdown-caused deaths than we have, will spike back up soon. The question about Sweden really is, how much time is required before the rolling average death rate for the longer term between us and them is no different. Is it going to be more than one year?
  
  Our own bed-wetters have said that “but if we just let people get Covid-19 like Sweden does, we’d have had 2800 deaths from it”. So in the context of around 28,000 deaths of elderly people per year, that makes Covid-19 the “cause” of 10% of those deaths, most likely “instead of” other causes rather than additional to them.
  
  This “context” applies to everywhere, even New York. The places where elderly people died in their droves “of Covid”, are places where it is extremely unhealthy for elderly people to be in the first place. NZ’s elderly are fortunately mostly living well away from the pollution and concentrated pathogens of “downtown”. It is an indictment on so-called “good communicator” politicians that they have been incapable of communicating the most basic context so as to suppress hysteria rather than promote it. Polling of “the belief about the death toll” has shown such absurd results as people around the world thinking 5% of British and 5% of Americans have died of Covid-19! Actually it is a question whether normal mortality is up 5% let alone this percentage of the entire population dying!

        The 80,000 would have been a do nothing scenario with the virus exploding. It is infectious enough that could have happened but of course we wouldn’t have just sat on our hands and watched it go. It’s an artificial number.
        
        We did bettter than the real model results as the lockdown (and shutting the border) had a greater effect on suppressing infection than had been modelled – the model had ongoing community transmission with a full suite of measures as I recall

        5) Take the higher of the three figures. That is your prediction.
        
        It is a 100% certainty that there will be no working out as to how he arrived at that figure. And if he did have working out, the inputs would have been arrived at by the same dartboard method.

      I am following the Lockdown in Victoria.
      
      If there is no lockdown cases peak at about 35 days from ignition and 45 days from first death in low compliant countries. If you believe Lockdown works peaks are about 12/15 day cases and 20 days deaths.
      
      In Victoria it peaked at 35 days 21 days after LD3 began, 3 days after Mask Wearing was instituted and 5 days before the LD 4.
      
      The saddest part is the matter which should define policy, deaths.
      
      LD 3 begins 23 deaths since March.
      12 days another 17,
      24 days when with Lockdown if it contributes should see a plateau 84.
      36 days another 170.
      46 days another 169
      
      Age Care Facilities 76% of deaths.
      
      When records began 22nd July cases in ACF 11%
      Now 35 days later cases in ACF 43%.
      
      Watching this real time with a sense of knowing how this goes in someways I would like to be proved wrong. There are still just nearly 1500 cases, patients and staff, loading each other with COVID 19. But here is a thought in this disaster. In a similar sized population with one large city its not
      
      80,000 Hendry
      12,000 Baker
      10,000 Baker
      3,000 Sweden
      Its less than 500.
      
      I think with hand washing, sanitising, SD and Lockdown of homes and Face Shields in some occupations deaths would have been about the 200 mark with good ACF management. 30% Suffering from dementia average age 81 male 84 female.
      
      35 day case peak I expected and got
      45 day death peak since first death I expected, it was actually 55 days and has now merely plateaued.
      
      My conclusion is simple focused tactical management of Care Homes and effective shielding of those at Home the rest of its a gigantic folly.

    Add in the economic cost, things just don’t add up.
    
    Factor in the drop in life expectancy that goes with the drop in GDP you are definitely going backwards.

      Separate & protect the vulnerable.
      Take usual health & sanitary care as advised.
      Carry on life as usual, and let nature take its course. Human beings actually have an immune system doncha know, that is designed specifically to fight & protect us from infections – like Sars Cov 2.
      The longer we carry on with this ‘lockdown/avoid the virus’ nonsense, we are weakening our immune systems – so when the next epidemic comes along in 5 – 10 – 15 years, we will be more susceptible.

    1 An infection rate of at least 60%. Sweden has not achieved anything like that. At most 10-15%
    
    2, How to protect those over 60 and those frail and vunerable in health from the consequences of Herd immunity?

      Infection rate is not synonymous with positive antibodies tests. Herd immunity has been reached in Sweden. The lying MSM and politicians are deliberately ignoring the facts.

      The answer for the “missing infected” is that the immune system uses T-cells as its first line of defence. This is primary school stuff. It was pessimistic to assume this would not apply to Covid-19, and to continue to ignore what is happening, demonstrates deliberate conspiracy.
      
      Re protecting rest homes; if the experts don’t know how to do that, there will be deaths in rest homes anyway even under lockdown. Like in Britain. The official experts don’t want to know how to do it. This has gone way beyond incompetence as an explanation. These people need to be put on trial for the damage THEY, not skeptics and scofflaws, are responsible for.

  Thank goodness you are nowhere near having actual influence on what virtually all governments (with varying levels of success) have done to actually defeat covid.
  The US has quite a serious problem with covid (though based on many of comments here many think not so). In no case has either the Federal govt or state governments tried to do nothing. Those states that opened early have had to put more restrictions in the stem the the infection rate. In NY, it looks like they have basically succeeded. Not yet in Florida, but at least they are trying.

    Sorry, we know that by your own admission you like to “get with the program” as a guiding principle in life, but you have no way at all of “knowing” if the measures have succeeded in anything. You may have a belief, but that is not knowing. That is clearly impossible, and to assert as fact something that may have been the case if only something else were the case is a clear fallacy. It’s pure counterfactual speculation, no matter how much you or anyone else will say “but, but …”

    It always struck me as illogical. Like a person who claims that seatbelts won’t protect them in a crash and complain when forced to wear one and then subsequently survive a car crash by wearing one and claim because they survived it proves they don’t need a seat belt

      You’re right, you are illogical. Seatbelts have been proven to save lives and we have a huge data set to confirm this, and so I wouldn’t drive without one. We can test their efficacy easily: drive into a wall with one, then without one. We are able to directly compare the empirical results.
      
      However, the efficacy of Level 4 lockdowns in New Zealand is what we are talking about here: how exactly are we to empirically compare New Zealand without a lockdown, versus New Zealand with a lockdown?     Wayne, I think what is really bugging people is the one rule for all approach to this. Literally smashing a walnut with a sledgehammer. Imagine the level of care and isolation we could provide to the at-risk people if we took all the debt that’s been racked up over the last few months by closing our borders and locking much of our economy down. I’d go even further and say there’d be plenty more left to throw at making our roads safer, additional Pharmac funding for other things that are killing people, etc etc.
    These guys (the COL) have tunnel vision, partly because they’re unable to think of more than one thing at a time and partly because whatever they’re doing suits their own ideals.

    Wayne, that may be the point but they are clearly failures as any quick look at the statistics shows. Respected epidemiologists called out the nonsense day one but have been sidelined. If we couldn’t test for covid we wouldn’t even have noticed it. The real killer has been the government response around the world.
    
    There’s been a failure to appreciate the stats, the demographics of those who are dying with covid and a naive belief that new zealand can isolate itself from the rest of the world. How many lockdowns are you prepared to put us through over the next five years? And when and under what conditions would you once again open the border and try and allow some life back into the economy?
    
    I am not trying to be a smart arse but the costs are huge and ongoing in every dimension and the economic ones are masked by the government effectively running the printing presses full steam.
    
    I disagree with the lockdown. The costs way exceed any possible benefit. It’s a massive experiment that a short while ago was ruled out as a policy by those now advocating it and it would appear not even to work. So yes, I do bitch and whine because it seems everyone has lost their heads, panicked and now can’t reverse out of a mad policy.

        The article you link to is hardly helpful to your cause. It’s from May. It’s the herald. It’s quoting nz expert Rod Jackson saying Sweden will suffer up to 60,000 deaths. He was out by over an order of magnitude but not quite as bad as other nz experts who were predicting 80,000 – – for NZ. They also don’t discuss the age of the fatalities and what covid does for life expectancy. Clearly next to nothing. It was always nonsense but nows there’s no excuse for spouting nonsense. One resident professorial expert in NZ nick Wilson was saying we didn’t want mass graves like in New York. I challenged him for his source. He sent back some article in a daiky rag reporting a “mass grave” which has operated for homeless deaths for over 150 years. He had no shame when I pointed out to him his error.
        
        If I was that wrong, I would be embarrassed. And I am not a Professor. Or expert. Or advocating for lock downs and other mad, useless and damaging policies. They still get paid. It’s everyone else who must suffer.

    Wayne… when the long run analysis of this is done I hope you and all other people behind rolling lockdowns will have the good grace to own and apologize for any excess deaths from suicide, cancer and cardiovascular disease over established pre- Covid rates

      My comment today was intended to be sardonic. Many times in the recent past, in a much more considered way, I have set out why Covid is more dangerous than many commenters here believe, and why in New Zealand’s circumstances, eradication is a reasonable strategy. Way too many commenters on Kiwiblog think anyone with that view is a befuddled idiot. So repeating reasoned argument here is not always the best approach.
      
      I would note that the eradication strategy has the support of both major political parties. Judith has explained on several occasions why National accepts that strategy. Act probably doesn’t, though that is not entirely clear.
      
      From what I can see, when NZ is in Level 1 and 2 we are doing pretty well economically, just as well, or better as any of the nations that we typically compare ourselves to.
      
      I agree total lockdowns are not sustainable (not that Level 3 is a total lockdown) but they are way better than letting covid spread without effective constraint.
      
      I would noe yout are not making the correct statistical comparisons. Global comparisons pretend each country is equal in capability. They are not. For instance, who could trust the stats out of Pakistan and India. They simply don’t have the capability.
      
      The better comparison is with the OECD countries, all of which have credible governmental capability. And I would note, all of which have taken at least some steps to control the virus. The UK, for instance, due to their lockdowns, seems to have the virus under control. That is why lockdowns are important. In the US, it much less under control. In both countries, the total covid death toll is already 1 death per 1,900 people. In the US that is likely to get to 1 death per 1,000 people. Those are not trivial figures.
      
      I note that it is essentially people who are well out on the right of the political spectrum (and well to the right of me) who are the most upset about the current strategy, which to a greater or lesser degree are the norm in the OECD. I regard myself as essentially in the middle of National, probably more toward the liberal end. Basically the same place as Jonathan Colman, Murray McCully, or to think of contemporary MP’s, Todd Muller or Shane Reti. They don’t sit at the Act end of the spectrum.

    Florida is never going to have the death toll New York had. If New York was a country, it would be the worst in the world. If New York’s stats were taken out of the USA’s, the USA would fall from around 7th worst populous nation, to around 20th.
    
    New York had everything lined up in the wrong direction. Early arrival of Covid, total lack of preparedness, irresponsible attitudes (often based on virtue signaling about the so-called “racist” attitude of alarmists), unlucky climate, urban crowding, high levels of vice, elderly living in high-vulnerability locations. On top of this, add the scandalous dumping of Covid cases into unprepared rest homes.
    
    You don’t know much if you are using New York as your “GOOD” example. They are now 100% wrong to keep lockdown conditions imposed. So is Britain and a lot of other places. In most of the world, there is now a “Casedemic” rather than a real pandemic.

      And no matter what you think of the govt, it is frankly completely over the top to call them “evil”. New Zealand doesn’t do “evil” governments. If you really think that (and I can’t believe you actually do), what does it say about what you think of those of your fellow citizens who are members of the government and their actual voters.
      
      It is not just a political convention that MP”s address each other in the House as honourable members, it is a recognition that we are all citizens together in the nation who generally want to do their best (even if by misguided lights).

        By late March, what I was posting here about the rate of asymptomatic infection, should have been enough for any politician of integrity and communications skills, to use to argue for something far less destructive than the hard lockdown we did. The problem is now epitomized by polling questions that reveal that people think something like 5 to 10% of the population of some countries have died of Covid 19. The context of the rate at which people die, and the causes they die of, would help too.
        
        Sky News “Outsiders” are among the rare honest purveyors of information in this part of the globe.

  Phil, I’ve been analysing at this dataset since Week-10. The Week 33 increase in EMR is both unusual and alarming. It will take a few weeks for this number to start to show any trend with regard to the number of Covid-19 deaths. For example, in week 32, 8942 people died, and this is one person less than the week earlier.
  
  The anecdotal evidence is pointing to increased EMR attributable to the lockdowns (deferred surgery, missed cancer screenings etc).

I see DPF “bravely” posted on gender dysphoria issues yesterday. Here is what I understand because I am a reader of “Quadrant” Magazine which follows facts more deeply than most on all issues. It calls itself a Conservative Intellectual Magazine.

The professional institutions responsible for the shift to medical “remedies”, have been infiltrated and sabotaged by young progressive thinkers, so suddenly old respected practitioners find themselves pushed out for “hate” or “malpractice” or some such charge, when they had been completely unaware up till then that a radical change was taking place. This is how “the long march through the institutions” has always worked. This is why “credentialed people” always seem to be “on the side of” progressivism’s latest assault – it is because the good men did nothing as they profession was being hijacked. In fact good men just getting on with their job every day, mostly remain unaware of what is happening until suddenly they find themselves being cancelled. Wait for it to happen to mathematics, just as Orwell predicted. Think I’m being fanciful?

The other thing that I believe needs to be emphasized, which is what the cancelled older professionals in psychology and pediatrics say, is that gender dysphoria in children is almost ALWAYS related to the child’s MOTHER having MENTAL ISSUES herself. So the current madness is misguided “kindness” not just to a child who is actually confused, but to mothers who actually needed treatment themselves and possibly institutionalization. How moral is it to sacrifice the victims of psychos, to the psychos whims, to be kind to the psychos? These kids have been groomed by psycho mums, just the same as some kids get groomed by pedos and seem to be “willing victims” as a result.

They often strike me as being spookily similar to those dreadful “stage-moms” who are intent on pushing their kids into stardom so they can live vicariously through them, except their is a far creepier sexual element to all of this.
  
  As I said yesterday, there will be a lot of “effeminate” boys out there who would most likely just grow up to be gay men (I can think of a few guys I went to school with just who did just this) that are now being identified as trans at an early age and are being brainwashed by awful adults into thinking that they are really just girls trapped in a boys body and being feed life altering hormones, most likely destroying any chance they would have ever had of living a normal life.

  In about September each year the adage “x shopping days until Christmas” often comes to the fore. This year it will be impossible to gauge this as the 2020 cry may be “x lock-downs until Christmas.” I suspect that should there be another lock-down of some duration no matter where in NZ, we won’t see an election before Christmas. The Santa’s gift for us all will be that Jacinda’s absurd term as PM will come to a rightful and glorious end as soon as an election is finally held!   I was just thinking today that the shops (in Auckland especially) will be hoping for a bumper Christmas spend up this year to make up for all the loss of revenue being closed in March/April and part of August. Will be absolute disaster if we have to go back to level 3 or 4 in December prior to Christmas. If that was the case, I think many malls would just become empty lots.

Yesterday it was revealed that Simpson and Roche didn’t even have terms of reference for their new supervisory roles – just more window-dressing. Reti will now get his chance to grill Bloomfield in the Health Select Committee. Bloomfield has nailed his colours to the mast so his ezamination must be merciless – plenty of “dissonances” to expose there.

Collins and Seymour make a good tag team. The latter mounts a full frontal assault while Collins’ persistent and adroit questioning is targeted on exposing the gross inconsistencies between appearance and reality, inviting Ardern and her Ministers to condemn themselves by their own words.

    Back in the day we used to watch on our little black and white tv, shows including Hawaii Five O, The Streets of San Francisco, Kojak, Perry Mason and Ironside – never imagining that we would still be watching the very same programmes (albeit on a bigger colour TV) today.
    Can recommend Hill St Blues at 5.45pm weekdays – lots of Police with guns but diversity, bro, diversity.
    We were in Hawaii and San Fran when those shows were being made, so scenery takes us back.

David Farrar (kiwiblog post yesterday afternoon, 3.20pm) and Rachel Morton have responded to the 22nd of July Winston Peters allegations, under privilege of Parliament, naming both as part of a grand conspiracy of persons who knew about his superannuation overpayments and leaked it to the media.

Response presented under Standing Orders 159–162 on application of Rachel Morton relating to references made by Rt Hon Winston Peters on 22 July 2020

The Right Honourable Winston Peters on the 22nd of July 2020 stated in the General Debate that I gave details of his superannuation to Act Leader David Seymour and that I was involved in breaching Mr Peters’ right to privacy.
Mr Peters claims I was aware of this information because it was discussed in a meeting that I was in with Hon Anne Tolley and Hon Paula Bennett. I was never in a meeting with Mrs Tolley and Mrs Bennett where this was discussed, and I never gave any information to Mr Seymour.
The statement by Mr Peters is categorically not true.

Now that these two people have had their rebukes of Winston’s allegations accepted and tabled, what will Winston’s next move be? Will he make these allegations again, this time in public, without the protection of Parliamentary privilege?

Or will Winston allow his challenged allegations to now fade, as has his insistence on having particular knowledge of the current Auckland covid “community” outbreak and telling an Australian television audience his “information” would be forth-coming within hours – without reference to expert advice or indeed checking with the Prime Minster.
What did concurrently eventuate was a scurrilous rumour which was discounted by the Minister of Health and others, but linked sufficiently to Winston’s comments that he had to appear on TV1 News to clalm it was “not his rumour”, which – oddly enough – has not emerged itself as Winston predicted.

Unless Winston can indicate any areas of concern relating to “his” covid rumour – prove its existence, as well as difference – can it be assumed to have no substance, or was in fact the scurrilous but discounted “other” concurrent rumour. And in either case he was prepared to spread material more untrue and publicly dangerous than what he has apparently wrongly condemned others of doing and used Parliamentary privilege to do so.
After all the fact that he received superannuation overpayments was true – although “done and dusted” as the issue was when asked about it by Newshub’s Lloyd Burr, and Winston’s choice of response resurrected and extended the matter.

      It means then they write the draft report
      
      Then they share it with Ministers and the subjects under “no-surprises”
      
      Then they consider the feedback.

I remember when

Hasrings District Council CEO says that “There are 1400 members of the Napier and Hastings community that call motels home.”
That is about one in every 1000 people in the area.
Last year “Government’s short term aim was to build 200 homes by mid 2021.
So far, only 12 new homes have been built.
In four years the housing register for Hastings has almost tripled.
It has gone from about 200 applicants in 2016 to more than 550 in June this year.

  Time lost all remaining credibility when they photo-shopped a distraught child staring up at Mean Ol’ Trump as she is being snatched off her parents to be locked in a cage.
  
  Where in reality the child mother put the kid down for a few minutes and picked her right up again. And the mother was trying to sneak into the US without the father’s knowledge or permission (and leaving behind her other kids) which raises all sorts of human trafficking red flags. I remember when

Of course young people abhor the ‘full stop’. It is irrevocable – not able to be changed, reversed, or recovered, final.
Not something that has been part of their world, where everything is subject to their whim.
Nothing about the full stop suggests compromise, knowing your rights or the psychological possibilities – if they don’t get their own way.

  Auckland needs to stay in at least level 2 for the next 30 days of zero new cases (of they get to level 2 this weekend, which on current progress, they should not).
  
  Lets me honest, we all know the tracing system isn’t any better than last time, and last time we needed to stay in level 2 for 30 days (or whatever it was), we did not come out while new cases were occuring.
  
  So, if it is so damn important, and, we know nothing has got any better with contact tracing, then same rule applies. However, if they do that, they will most likely lose the election, as this is their fault, and they know it. So, lowering the levels is political.
  
  South Island should be back at level 1, as there are no cases. If they let Auckland go to level 2, then Aucklanders can travel (which means it will spread to South Island). If it does, then that is the third screw up, and at that point, all is lost, and the team of 5 million and the hard and early BS was a complete failure (as well as a complete lie).
  
  I have noticed too, many former Ardern supporters now openly questioning honesty and competence. I just sit back and listen….

cmm buys electronic components from digikey (USA) on 18th August.
They are shipped a few hours later on 18th.The next morning they are already in Honolulu and a few hours later they are in Australia, then a few hours later (21st, 7am) they’re in Auckland.

5 days later still no delivery in Chch. Been having similar experiences with lots of stuff coming in from overseas via different carriers.

Magic Cindyland is really not working well.

  A box of masks on order for me took days to get across Auckland. Nothing to do with the PM. The courier company was overwhelmed with an upsurge in business.
  Last year my iPhone was replaced and a new one sent from somewhere near the airport to Onehunga. Straight down the motorway.
  A week later after I rang 2Degrees, Apple, the repair shop & the courier in rotation I found out it had gone to China & the package destined for China had been delivered to Onehunga.
  Finally I spoke to someone at Apple in Singapore & a phone arrived where it should have in hours.
  Another thing I found out was that expressing displeasure with any of these people, except Apple, is like water off a duck’s back. And I don’t mean yelling & shouting & swearing, but forthwrite language.

South Island Maori blocked a plan to set up a sanctuary for sea birds and marine animals at Campbell Island.

Ngai Tahu was left powerful by the sweetheart Treaty settlement negotiated for the tribe by Chris Finlayson in his pre-MP days.

There’s no evidence Maori set foot on the sub-Antarctic island before European settlement of New Zealand.

Stuff reports Ngai Tahu, which initially supported the extension, later told the Government suggesting it should should consider the risk of “potentially challenging litigation” over any extension. The Government then abandoned the plan.

The tribe sometimes talks of its role as a protector of the environment.

The Campbell Island group hosts six of the 22 species of albatross and mollymawk, including the world’s largest population of Southern Royal albatross. Rockhopper penguins breed there, and the islands are one of two subantarctic breeding grounds for the New Zealand sea lion and Southern elephant seals. New Zealand fur seals also breed on Campbell Island.

AirNZ reopened booking to Queenstown and immediately the planes were full – with tickets at top dollars.
The share market is pretty much back to it’s peak before covid-19 hit the country.
House prices are continuing to go up.
Meanwhile.
Auckland food banks are handing out twice as much food as previously. 10% of the kids at one of the Seth Auckland schools didn’t return after the first lockdown because they were working to help the family.

How come social distancing isn’t required on public transport (buses and trains) whilst wearing a face mask, but airlines have to have empty seats to maintain social distancing despite passengers (already) wearing face masks?

Making it harder for airlines to cover their costs (let alone make profits) and the likes of JetStar ceasing operations for a couple of weeks and Air NZ carrying more losses.

The end result being less staff hired/re-hired and less work/jobs for the airlines, and tourism, and the various industries servicing and supporting them all.

Are Labour incompetent with their (lack of) decision making, thinking things through and making adjustments? It sure seems like it!

So why should the people (and MSM) of NZ reward an incompetent political party wanting to be re-elected and continue with their hopelessness?

Labour = “kind” but dangerously useless!

The epidemiology “experts” the media love go to, express one dimensional views that focus solely on the health issues. The media’s favorite “experts” invariably recommend freedom curtailing measures (lockdowns, masks, social distancing) in reaction to any level of community infection. They do not seems to be aware of the consequences of this one dimensional agenda (or do not care). It is not a straight choice between health and economics. Without an active economy, there can be no health system. As an economy dies so does the health system (Venezuela, Zimbabwe). While economic activity and non-covid health care are strangled, people suffer. I also suspect that the media’s experts crave the attention they get, and taking the one-dimensional view helps ensure they get the attention they want.

  Those people are medical specialists who are asked for their advise on their area of expertise. If they ran the country we’d probably all be at Level 5 for years, depending of which ones consulted.
  But they don’t.
  Similarly if some other bunch of experts ran the show we might not have a lockdown at all.
  The government must decide what must be done and wear the consequences, not the various experts and certainly not the media pundits and most certainly not anyone on forums such as this.

Heard Hosking on ZB about 8.45am referencing a NZH article (must be this pay-walled article https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12359365) saying that the Prime Minister has her own “videographer/photographer” in her team who follows her around everywhere taking shots of her for social media (and presumably electioneering) purposes.

How ridiculously vain of the PM, how cynically manipulative the Labour Party are, and frankly what a demeaning affront to the position of Prime Minister of NZ.

This isn’t a flippin’ reality TV show but the Labour Party and a complicit Ardern have demonstrated over the last three years that to them, that it is!

And on a sidenote this household notices how Ardern has a completely different hairstyle every day. Kind of makes sense in a way, if one wants to look good for the camera every day!

SWMBO, who is an expert in these matters, suggests the PM must have her own personal hairdresser (despite me suggesting perhaps the PM does it herself and being clobbered for doubting her wisdom).

Wonder if the MSM will ask the PM whether she does have a personal hairdresser on the taxpayer? Yeah? Nah, why should they when for the last 3 years they haven’t even bothered telling the people of NZ that the PM has her own personal photographer accompanying her (whom they would also see and run into). Well then if that’s the case what else are they not telling us ….

More great news! Three more local councils have adopted STV this month (for the 2022 and 2025 local elections). They are: Far North District Council, Gisborne District Council, and Nelson City Council.

Finally, after more than 15 years of STV being available to councils, the pace of change is starting to pick up.

For example, Winston would be one of the five candidates elected together in Northland, and James Shaw would be one of the five (or seven) candidates elected together in Wellington, but, beyond, that, both parties might well struggle.

  You wont find out what % of traces have been tracked by the app. They don’t keep records !
  Months ago we were told that to be effective, the app should be downloaded to over 60% of phones.
  Ashley is now ‘very pleased’ that the app is on 40% of phones ‘estimated as owned by over 16 year olds’, but…
  1) You can’t presume phones owned by under-16’s don’t have the app. That is Ardern’s target market.
  2) Many people have 2 phones, one for work, one for personal use.
  
  I estimate around 20% of phones have the app. It’s a dog. The Govt and Bloomfield should stop being so intransigent and move on to a new solution, or contract out to a competent IT company.

A few weeks ago, we had to get a drain unblocker in to clear the pipes. He suggested that we should go round every day and flush all the toilets in the house to keep the water circulating.
Actually makes a lot of sense when you don’t normally use about 4 of them .

The Spectator reports on a small Swedish study which looked at how many people died of, as opposed to with, Covid-19, where Covid-19 had been recorded as the cause of death.

“The study looks at the cases of 122 people who have died in the region outside of a hospital setting – either at home or in accommodation for the elderly – and whose deaths were attributed to Covid-19. Half of this group were aged 88 or over. Of the 122 cases, 111 were judged to have extensive comorbidities (the presence of one or more additional conditions) and 11 had moderate comorbidities. Not one of those who died, in other words, were in good health. In only 15 per cent of cases was Covid-19 judged to be the direct cause of death. Covid-19 was a contributory cause in 70 per cent of cases, and in the remaining 15 per cent death was judged to have been caused by another underlying cause – most often heart disease. ”

Not definitive, but highly instructive.

How bad is any disease/threat?

Well one way to look at it is how much your life would be shortened if we took all the deaths and averaged it out over everybody. ie. a lifetime threat of that disease/problem.

So, for instance, let’s do the sums on road deaths.
Approx 350 people die per year, average age of about 30. Assuming a normal lifetime of 75 years we end up with 45 years of life lost per death (15750 life years), divide that by team of 5 million and it’s about 1 day per year. Since you live on average 75 years, motor vehicle accidents shorten your life by about 10 weeks on average.

Cancers, heart attacks etc are more likely to strike later in life, so the amount of lost years per death is far lower. Let’s just say 15 years. And 9500 deaths per year. Crank the sums and, on average cancers will shorten your life by years and 2 months. or 111 weeks. So 10x as bad as motor vehicles.

For Spanish Flu, in NZ, 9000 people out of 1 million died and the average age of death was about 20 – shortening lives by 50 years. Averaged out: 23 weeks of life lost per person. So about twice as bad as a lifetime’s risk of motor vehicle accidents.

Of course CV19 must be much worse otherwise they would not be freaking out so much.

Let’s crank the numbers for CV19. If The Saviour Of Us All had not stepped in, it is plausible that 3000 people in the last year or so of their life will have died by the end of this year. But since CV19 almost exclusively hits the frail, sick and elderly on average only about 1 year of life is lost. Estimated average life shortening: 5 hours.

That’s less than 1% of the lifetime risk of dying in a motor vehicle accident.

Regardless of what he did, is it cruel and unusual punishment for the courts to force a person to sit there silent having abuse hurled at him?

Tarrant is a sick puppy and very few would shed a tear if he “slipped in the shower”. I certainly would not. But our justice system is supposed to be built on more lofty principles – geared towards correction etc.

“We’re better than that” etc.

Forcing him to listen to people saying that he deserves to be buried in a landfill is surely not consistent with that.

At what point does falling incomes hit asset prices?

My theory is that prices are not really going up, just that the government is printing so much money and lowering interest rates to 0 meaning all that money is going into housing….this makes people who have bank savings far poorer .

Inflation doesn’t take into account house prices or share prices… so , money is losing value at a rapid pace, but not hitting inflation figures.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has hit back at Opposition leader Judith Collins for “trying to imply without any evidence” that the latest COVID-19 outbreak came from the border.

Collins told The AM Show on Wednesday the outbreak has “obviously been caused by a border mishap”, and she doubled down in Parliament by quoting Otago University Professor Nick Wilson who said “we must have had some failure at the border”.
