        I understand that you must necessarily propose a straw man argument in order to approach even the appearance of effectively rebutting anything I have ever said, but I have never claimed that white people don’t commit crimes, nor that the recent riots have been perpetrated exclusively by blacks. I welcome any evidence that I have.
        
        My argument has always been that blacks disproportionately commit violent crimes in the US, and that blacks have been rioting and looting en masse since George Floyd died. These statements both align with the facts.

        Her , her kids and husband all work.
        they are NOT wealthy
        They have NEVER been in trouble with the law and the kids wouldn’t dare….Mothers wrath.

      Paulus- my skin is white, but if the law interpretations are going to swing down the “cultural background” pathway then that opens up some defence possibilities even for me.
      My grandmother’s family arrived here more than a century and a half ago having been dispossessed of their croft, stock and livelihood due to the Scottish Highlands Land clearances by the English.
      They came here with nothing and started again.
      So, can I use this as a defence if I commit a crime tomorrow?

  Masks do not work, present number of health staff in Victoria infected are 449 and 58 new cases yesterday. these people are supposedly given the best masks and taught how to use them.
  The rest of the population are ordered to wear a mask, can be anything really from underpants through to a N95.
  Your typical Uber driver that is earning 2/5 of 5/8 of stuff all, do you really think he is going to change his mask every 4 hours in their 18 hour shift to make a crust, and do it correctly.

    If you go to the days when they tested 20,000 you get to double figures.
    
    If you go to the days when they tested 10,000 you get 7.8.9’s.
    
    Another mildly intelligent way to report this would be to say we have 10 cases and its two families. That is bound to affect T & T.
    
    All in all in the immediate post Lockdown which doesn’t bite for say 10/12 days (even by the Lockdown enthusiasts standards) cases have gone nowhere. Nothing has happened so either we shouldn’t have locked down and gone balanced gone quick with T &T like South Korea (right now they are reluctant to go up a level with a much bigger breakout) or we should go hard, go on, and on and on and stay in 3.
    
    I welcome someone explaining the figures in any other way.
    
    The only thing that will change the dynamic is if there is a community or sub community which is hiding the tricky little blighter.

        This article explains why we can all go to 2 on Monday. Apparently within twelve days you can prove you have flattened the curve, reduced the R Number and prevented an explosition of cases.
        
        My understanding from Dr Bloomfield is that a cycle of transmission lasts about 12 days. That means all you have found out is what was happening prior to Lockdown. In all likelyhood most of the transmission points were in pre Lockdown circumstances and then it incubated and a way we go. However I am struggling when the figures are effectively flat to see any trend has been established.
        
        Yesterday with less than ten thousand tests and 11 cases thats the highest community case numbers since 18th and per tests as high as any since the 12th and definitely a Lockdown outcome.
        
        Let us hope by taking everyone into Quarantine and doing effective T & T and requesting self isolation has worked because that rather than Lockdown can break the chain.

        I hear what you are saying and have read the article to which you refer. I hope what you are saying comes to fruition. However, the article does not give me any confidence whatsoever. There are too many wooly areas and assumptions with few hard and fast facts to support figures quoted.

        As I am only a few days in here I am trying to be diplomatic and not to judgemental and strident. But lets take the gloves off for a sec. I wanted to show the article without to much judgemental comment but to me its pretty simple. Lockdown if it works takes at least 12 days to have any affect on the stats and so the entire example is based on a false assumption. The data is not in yet. But the last few days are not promising.
        
        I have looked at Hard Lockdown stratagies and I am with a whole cadre of epidemoligists which include nobel prize winners who think its for the birds. In Lockdown the Movie we went in on the day cases peeked. They moved around a metric until April 6th and fell away. Level 2 would have sufficed. Level 2 behaviour with protection for Aged Care Facilties works.
        
        This second wave will come down to one very simple behaviorial issue can the community it broke out in contain it. I have always thought it was a 50/50 judgement call and not worth Lockdown just test deep into the community. If that doesn’t work then your into Melbourne the Sequel and my thought there is for God’s sake ring fence the Aged Care Facilities. Trust thats a bit clearer and I agree with your assessment of the article.

Yesterday I had one of those “Oh shit” moments.

At some stage during the day it became obvious that overstayers in Auckland had become a problem for Covid testing – they weren’t going to be tested in case they were followed up by immigration and put on a plane.

At one stage someone (maybe an overstayer) was asked about testing and medication and he said “We use Samoan medicine” (It could have been Tongan or some other Pacific Island). I suddenly realised that the Government and its rag-tag bunch of departments might be loosing control of the testing and spread of the virus.

If the Virus gets into a bunch of people who aren’t being tested and who think things like various tree leaves and insect wings will fix their medical problems then we have an uncontrolled spread. We saw what happens with this sort of thing with the measles outbreak and the involvement of witch doctors.

I thought – Oh Shit – here comes level 3 and 4 again. And soon

I often see police vehicles exceeding the posted limit, but usually within the tolerance levels. Now there is no tolerance, will they follow their own rules?

I think this is a stupid change in policy. I bet it has the potential to increase the road toll too, as frustration risks may well exceed speed risks.

  One issue that I wonder has been fully thought through in this policy change are the discrepancies between individual car speedometers. Surely not all cars have speedometers that provide a totally accurate reading of how fast they are travelling. For instance, for a car travelling at 100 km/h some speedometers might read 97 km/h or something similar.
  
  Of course I am aware that many car manufacturers (including the maker of my car) deliberately calibrate the speedometer to make it seem you are moving faster than what you’re actually travelling but I have always thought one of the reasons for the tolerance policy is to provide some allowance for speedometers that may not be entirely accurate as per the example above.

  It is every disappointing on a few grounds:
  
  Unless you have a GPS digital speedometer, your analogue speedometer is accurate to within about 5 percent. At an ‘indicated’ speed of 100, most cars are travelling between 95 and 100.
  
  You turn drivers into paranoids watching their speedometer instead of doing what they should be doing – watching the damn road.
  
  The idea that on straight empty highways in good weather that 100 is safe and 105 is dangerous is an absurdity.
  
  On New Zealand highways, with occasional overtaking lanes, literally sticking to 100 kmh makes overtaking a truck travelling at 90 kmh impossible. Literally impossible. There is simply not enough overtaking lane. Attempting to overtake at 100 kmh would be very dangerous because you run out of road and frustrate the hell out of drivers behind you who are also trying to overtake the slow vehicle.
  
  It reveals police priorities. There are numerous dangerous practices out there that should receive MUCH more police attention – I recently did a 2000 km South Island road trip an I saw these behaviours daily:
  
  – aggressive driving and ‘tail gating’
  
  – Overtaking on yellow lines
  
  – Dangerous overtaking
  
  – Talking on the phone while driving at highway speeds
  
  – Driving a campervan and being oblivious to the 20 cars behind you.
  
  – Driving at 95 kmh in the right-hand lane of a motorway.
  
  But of course, it is easier to book people for driving at 101 kmh rather than to address these serious and dangerous behaviours. Sad to say but compared to Australia, the UK, and Germany, my observation is that – on average – New Zealand driving behaviour and competence is poor. And those standards will not be fixed by the revealed priorities of the New Zealand Police.

    Have you noticed that the number of NZ deaths With Covid-19 no longer feature on the Covid-19 stats?
    
    Two reasons:
    a) The tiny tiny number of deaths have been contested because most would have died from any other flu anyway. Many were not tested. Even the infection numbers and hospitalisation numbers are anemic. Flu in 2017 had 180 people per week being hospitalised, with a dozen or two dying weekly during winter. More people die every year from getting the flu while in hospital than have died from Covid.
    
    b) The focus is on fear mongering. The public are just going through the motions like sheep. And to prove that point, CoL themselves have not been social distancing. They do for the photo shoots, but that is all.
    
    What is the relevance of a face mask for one specific flu variant that is so weak it pales into insignificance? Even the UK, Covid-19 deaths are a third of deaths from all other flus. So not the Resident Evil Zombie flu we are being told it is.
    
    Herd immunity works by people’s immune system combating the flu and retarding its effectiveness before passing it on.
    
    Face masks are not effective, but even if they were, isolating people is only delaying hard immunity.
    
    Face masks are giving people a false sense of security.
    
    I fully support Dr Simon Thornley’s view on this. Facefasks make sense on airplanes but not day to day life. And that elimination is not the answer.

Looks like the Government has instructed the Police to go and collect some revenue with the removal of the 5 KMPH tolerance that is normally allowed. Any respect for the Police with this action IMHO will vanish if this occurs. How much longer will it be before the network of traffic cameras on highways are used for ‘average speed enforcement’ ie if your average speed between A and B exceeds the prevailing limit you get a ticket in your letterbox.

Most people wouldn’t but they would be subject to a fine. Why don’t these idiots make sure what they put into law actually does what it is supposed to do.   You can have two or three of these scattered around and still pay far less than you would for a decent smart phone. Running costs are much lower, too.

Several times now Pres Trump has suggested that America’s apparent high incidence of Covid19 infections is down to too much testing.
If 100,000 people are randomly tested there might be, say 100 infected, whereas if only 50,000 are tested that number would be 50. That would leave 50 continuing to infect other people.
If the other 50,000 are tested a couple of weeks later the number infected may have grown into the many hundreds as has been shown here by how quickly one infected person can cause a chain reaction.

In the supermarket yesterday a fat woman in a muzzle told me that I should be wearing a mask. She just looked at me and grunted one word “mask!” with an exclamation mark.

“I can’t wear a mask because I’ve got an allergy” I said.

“Oh…. is it the cloth or something?”

“Nope. I’m allergic to mindless adherence to subliminal programming. Especially by people who haven’t got a clue.”

I could see my her eyes that she was trying to work out some of the longer words and what they might mean. There was a kind of wrinkling of the eyebrows going on so, being a kind hearted guy and not wanting to hurt her feelings, I said “But you look good with a mask. It really suits you. Are you Karen?”

I didn’t catch her reply, muffled in her muzzle, as I considered the merits of the strength 10 versus the strength 12 coffee pods.

In the end I went for the 12. Altogether a fuller coffee experience.

The two new papers mention an “observed trend” of 0.15 degrees per decade.
**However** – when you factor in things like –
* measurement error (which I’d love to know for that figure)
* urban “heat island” effects
* old measuring stations (as mentioned above)
* stations being moved
* tens of thousands of jobs (in climate science and media) depending on scaring people
* deliberate “fudging” of the data in Climategate

……. the whole thing is rapidly becoming a farce (to put it mildly).

Measuring temperature accurately and precisely is **very very difficult**.

    FWIW the 3 articles posted at WUWT are reposts from Judith Curry’s blog Climate etc https://judithcurry.com/. The posts describe 3 recent peer reviewed publications and in 2 cases are written by one of the authors of those papers (Nic Lewis https://www.rossmckitrick.com/cv-talks-bio-etc.html and Ross McKitrick https://www.rossmckitrick.com), and in the third Nic Lewis critiques a paper by the Exeter Climate Systems group.
    
    The Lewis contributions deal with the difficult issue of just how sensitive the climate is to greenhouse gases.
    
    The general circulation models used to project future climates (and in most policy responses) produce sensitivities that are higher than have been estimated from observations from the period where we have good instrumental coverage. This uncertainty is reflected in the range cited by the IPCC, and hasn’t changed much since its very early reports 30 years ago.
    
    Lewis has been working on estimating the sensitivity from observational data, and the current state of the literature has some who favour the models publishing papers raising objections to his techniques.
    
    The Exeter group fit a linear model to historic warming and the climates’ response, claiming the best fit implies high sensitivity. Lewis pushes back saying if we accept that their implied model then zero warming should produce zero response, but their model fails to do that. Objection overruled as it were.
    
    His own paper deals with another objection to the estimates based on historic observations. The argument advanced by others is that if you take account of the patterns of temperature change in the historic record you in fact get higher estimates of sensitivity, more consistent with what the models are producing.
    
    In this case Lewis redoes their analysis using 5 different dataset for the sea-ice temperatures, and showed that the cited effect occurred in only the one that been previously reported. Lewis suggests the results may arise from the way the exceptional dataset was constructed in the merging of the satellite data with earlier observations.
    
    McKitrick reports on a paper of his and a paper by another team that test how well the latest generation of climate models (CMIP 6) back project over the known instrumental period. Early results had been projecting more warming than the current ones.
    
    What both papers found was warming was significantly overstated, particularly in the troposphere (4-5 times faster). Both papers report that this bias is increasing in the newer models.
    
    The problem here is the models all have a systematic bias to over heating, and projections from them are being used for policy purpose
    
    As they say thank goodness the science is settled.

  Here is just one of many tips to dealing with those people in conversation:
  
  Put them on the back foot, by asking them to justify their rationale. Then ask them, are they aware of the Furtwangler Glacier on Mt Kilimanjaro? Tell them that there was no Glacier on Mt Kilimanjaro11,500 years ago, a fact verifiable on Google. Ask them to explain that if man is the sole cause of Global Warming, why is it much colder now, than it was 11,500 years ago?
  
  It is likely that the Koolaid drinkers do not know about Kepler, Milutin Milankovitch, the shaking and wobbling of the earth, the inverse square law of radiation, and the continuing heating and cooling of the earth. Instead they believe the Sky is falling.

I would take that as the person being just a carrier of stuff for the person in front who pushed in. I wouldn’t take it for a racist comment as NZ is not America where we had no coloured slaves and slave owners anyway. In the report:

This third point is the one that I question.

Are you not allowed to show interest in a person’s place of origin?

My partners just got back from seeing a client in Titters.
He was saying he drove past the ‘New Lynn Covid Testing Centre’ on the way home and couldn’t believe how long the queue of vehicles was. Reckoned by the look of the cars lined up there, it would make a great police sting operation, if they were looking for unwarranted cars, unlicensed drivers and overstayers.

What if there is a new spike of community transmission on monday after we go to level 2 in either Auckland or the rest of the country?

Does it mean we go back to level 3 or even 4 depending where it happened?

The govt has to draw the line somewhere on this on going or perceived covid-19 problem.

Either we live with it and accept certain groups in our communities are more likely to catch it,but let the rest of population get on with there daily lives.

Are we coming out of Level 3 in Auckland? Given previous decisions made, how can this be? Now let me say up front that I’m not a believer in their city or countrywide lock down concept, but we need to look at the basis for previous decisions and the current situation to evaluate any new decision.
Jacinda (and let’s be honest, it was her decisions) locked Auckland down at level 3 and the rest of the country at level 2 on their basis of the most recent outbreak of the virus. Since lock down we have had at least 5, but typically 10 – 13 new cases every day. The consequence of this is that lock down was extended for a further 4 days. However in the past 3 days, with only 1 more day of stats to go, we are still seeing 10 – 13 new cases per day.
The question is the, does the PTPM continue the lock down since the situation hasn’t changed, and the conditions that Led to an extra 4 days still exist? Or does she allow for a reduction in levels?
If she does allow the level to be dropped, then why was the original 2 week stretch extended? You can’t have it both ways. If conditions haven’t changed she is forced to extend lock down again, or essentially admit the lock downs don’t work and the most recent lock down wasn’t needed, or at least the extra 4 days weren’t.

    I tend to agree with Local Miller. If we (Auck) go to level 2 tomorrow night, it means the last Level 3 Lockdown in Auck and all associated loss of revenue etc has been for nothing.
    Cindy wouldn’t know about that though, she has never had a proper job, let alone own a business. She didn’t even know what GDP was for F sake when she was anointed PM.

  It does seem odd that we would be going down to L2 considering the cases are jumping quite alot each day and we have a new Mt Roskill church mini-mega cluster brewing???…..then they also said we will def be going down a level for sure on Mon?

  We shouldn’t be coming out of lockdown if you base it on this inept governments own guidelines. But because people are starting to get pissy at Ardern this level 3 lockdown will surely end. These lockdowns have been politically motivated since day one. When are people going to wake up to that reality?

  Here is the logic.
  
  To me it has one profound flaw all the testing you do in the first ten days is only telling you about pre lockdown outcomes. If you apply other logic used by A B you really need 28 days to knock a cluster on its head and the signs are this one is at best levitating.

  The point was that there were quite a few comments in the media that people should be paying, then National said they would charge returnees, it seemed popular with people, so Labour had to do something, so they announced it the next day.
  At the time it was clear when reading more than the headline that hardly anyone would be charged. A win-win for Labour – not charging people so returnees happy, and taxpayers think they’re not paying, so taxpayers are happy. The usual smoke & mirrors from this government.

So it appears with the virus still active in Auckland that the last two and a half weeks of economic misery has been a total waste of time and hundreds of millions of dollars ,not to mention thousands of jobs that were already hanging by a thread.
Hasn’t our government done well again ?? I’ve got a good idea,lets vote them back into power so they can finish the great job they’ve done so far .
