  How about freedom for all of us 🙂
  
  Provide a venue for people who want complete isolation, Somes Island springs to mind, free home grocery etc delivery for all elderly or at risk citizens (get those nephews off the couch), isolation at cost for visa holders returning and no welfare for them at all, self isolation for citizens monitored electronically and let the rest of us decide what to do about getting on with life.
  
  I for one would get out and about but with some degree of social distancing just to avoid contracting the virus, virtually harmless to me, and passing it on to others not so healthy.

Most of these franchised beauty parlours have their fair share of latte and fine wine people, botoxed, made up as per the manual, and as far removed from original Labour voters as you can get.     The other thing with wealthy urban Green and Labour voters, is that they are frequently voracious real estate capitalists with 2 or more rental properties, charging the maximum rent that the market will deliver. I have met several of them.
    
    Seriously if you look at areas like East Christchurch and Cannons Creek in Wellington, there are seriously poor people with lots of poor children. They will be poor for a variety of reasons, but lets put that aside.
    
    The reality is these families would benefit from ACT’s policies more than most:

        Christchurch East is my electorate, Kev, and although I am by instinct a true blue National voter and would have thrown myself off a cliff for Bill English I will not be voting for a party led by someone- no matter how admirable- who supports full term abortion. So it’s a New Conservative vote from me I feel. I feel I have nothing to lose by casting a vote for social conservatism and for life.

  I was a member of Toastmasters for a couple of years around the late 1990’s. For me, it was a means of personal improvement, as I was shit-scared of speaking in public, but had a role which required it.
  
  Unfortunately, every organisation has its bad apples, and it’s probably unfair to judge Toastmasters on a possibly drunken outburst by a member, who is now learning that every action has a consequence.

    Yes – I went along to keep my teenage daughter company – must have been over 30 years ago. I was a poor public speaker, but my daughter was almost mute in public. We both benefitted and my daughter became a confident speaker, which was a decided advantage in her career. I learnt to keep quiet.

There is a growing trend of Stuff publishing stories by aggrieved people. Today it is about a person who failed her driving test because the driving examiner refused to sit in the passenger seat on health and safety grounds. Looking at the photo, I agree with him. ?

  The article missed the point: why do we have people who have been driving in our country on restricted licenses for 16 years! And presumably transport her 5 kids as that’s why her car is dirty, but not a full license holder. This legislation needs to be sorted.

    The last Government partially fixed the problem.
    
    From 2014 you can only have a restricted license for 5 years otherwise you lose it and need to start all over again. There were a very high number of people who never upgraded their licenses. Anyway, the change is not retrospective, so there will be people driving on restricted licenses who have held them for 20 years.

    Also, before 2012, the restricted license test was relatively easy, and the full license test difficult. In 2012 that was reversed – the restricted license test is now difficult and the full license test is more about showing that you are aware of your surroundings and can drive defensively etc.
    
    Finally the reason she can drive her kids, is that there is an exemption. Restricted drivers cannot have passengers, EXCEPT for their children, and their partner.

        Was it on the checklist to tick off?
        Passenger seat clean – tick.
        Passenger seat not clean – no tick so license failed.

      The growth of gangs is directly linked to the increases in welfare allowing more money for drugs which allows more members to prosper.
      
      The increases in student living allowance allowed students to pool and increase the quality of their housing at the cost of families who were unable to match that increase so we created an upward spiral.
      
      Throwing money alone does not work without some form of education.
      
      Many years ago one of my businesses arranged small loans through banks and finance companies for clients for a small fee. We achieved “success” for these clients generally by loan consolidation freeing up income for living and reducing overall loan costs and reducing the length of the loan.
      
      We shut it down because we found that within a short time, often weeks, many clients had used that extra spare income to hook up another HP or small loan elsewhere to fund a meaningless or wasteful purchase thereby putting themselves back into the same precarious position they were in before our intervention.
      
      There is no cure for fiscal stupidity and I doubt there ever will be as it seems to be generational.

    Child poverty in this country is absolutely a disgrace. The problem is that it isn’t actually the Government that’s at fault (or at least National).
    
    The disgrace is on the parents that choose to not act in the best interest of their children. They are given money, education, healthcare etc. There is no reason these kids shouldn’t be succeeding other than their own cjhoices and the choices of their parents.
    
    The reason why we can attack Labour over this is that they politicised it against National and must therefore be held accountable for their lack of positive results.

    The biggest driver of hardship for low income families is housing costs. The Government has done nothing to fix that – indeed they have made things worse. That takes some doing.
    
    The only way to fix housing costs is to repeat what the Government did to Christchurch in 2012. Use emergency powers to force Councils to release urban land. And remove consenting from Councils (or intervene and fix things).
    
    It is absurd that New Zealand – the same size as the UK but with 5 million people has such crazy unaffordable housing.

    I understand the alleged killer of the Trump supporter was stopped by Police late last week, and shot after he presented a firearm at the arresting officers.
    
    Interestingly, the BLM and Antifa people “peacefully” protesting in Portland and other places have been silent about this. Why would a supposed “peaceful” protestor be carrying a gun?

      There is generally no moral equivalence between the left and right factions in the States. 17 year old kid Kyle Rittenhouse, for instance, was in Kenosha (wisely or unwisely) to clean up graffiti, protect businesses from the the mobs, and in addition to his AR-15, had medical equipment to aid the wounded. He then was forced into a position of self-defence when chased down, shooting dead a convicted pedophile in the head, a spouse beater in the chest, and severely wounding another guy, armed with a pistol and “known” to the police in the arm.
      
      However, this guy in Portland shot his victim several times in cold blood when under no imminent threat, was armed when police confronted him, and was rightly shot dead in a fire fight with the police when resisting arrest on a warrant.
      
      Yet the treatment from most of the media could not be less indicative of this difference.

  I read it and it said little to me. Basically econo waffle.
  
  Everyone knows more houses are needed yet few have any solutions other than blame Councils and the RMA.
  
  Face the facts, New Zealand’s construction industry is at capacity. Many builders and other tradesmen have migrated to Auckland to fill the massive demand there leaving a construction shortfall elsewhere, including Wellington so naturally house prices and rents rise.
  
  Why not look at how many beneficiaries with no employed in the whole household are living, with rental supplements, in high priced areas. We have empty houses all over NZ and many semi rural towns dieing as a result. Flatten the welfare housing supplement throughout the country and watch people move out of higher rental areas.

      She has been a casualty (lost her job in a restructure) and she is seeing the disconnect between the cheerful “unite against covid-19” govt messaging and reality which is a significant people are hurting. And if these people call out the govt or worse, the Prime Minister, they are piled upon!
      
      It must annoy the heck out of her to see the MSM continuing to deflect away from the government’s poor handling of its covid response and which instead are defending the Prime Minister on really trivial issues. None of that provides jobs and security for people made redundant!

  Tony, Vance and others get it very wrong.
  
  You see their problem is that since the days of Kirk, Rowling and Muldoon we have gradually lost respect for our Prime Ministers and politicians. This was unlike the respect we held for politicians like Marshall, Holyoake or Holland. We no longer held them in reverence, because we worked out they were human like us and tended to behave like the rest of us. Making it in some instances a very low bar.
  
  Then you turn the issue around, ordinarily we should respect the position of Prime Minister, but how can we when:
  
  1. She was selected as PM by “what’s in it for Winstone”;
  2. Her party came second at the last election, and the CoL is a combination of parties to thwart the will of 45% of the electorate;
  3. Her govt has never had a coherent plan for government, instead we witnessed all the Working Groups etc;
  4. In many instances, we witness only a superficial level of understanding of the issues being asked of the Prime Minister, and when she gets questioned further, she resorts to childish responses or sulks.
  
  Given the above, clearly she does not respect the position she holds, so why she we respect her?
  
  Therefore, as far as I’m concerned, she is and will remain Cindy!

When National governed the media was awash weekly (daily at times) with Labour and the unions wailing , screaming and ranting about Serco-managed prisons. At the time many of us here made mention of it – that it had little to do with prisoner welfare and that it was largely a union-driven beat up designed purely to drive Serco from the market.

A number of times in the last three years there have been Correction run prisons in major difficulty and where are Labour and the unions now?

The advice comes after National under new leader Judith Collins confirmed to the Herald it would tear up new Healthy Homes standards recently brought in by the Labour-led Government.

Is National purposely trying to throw the election? combine that with getting rid of mandatory lunch breaks, you’ve really got to wonder.
Why are they pitching so heavily at what is probably about 10% of the electorate? this is madness.

    Judith Collins and other key National spokespeople are rolling out policies almost every day that clearly differentiate National from Labour in particular, and the coalition government in general. The Healthy Homes Standards were largely a Green policy, and have placed such a burden on landlords that many are either quitting their holdings, or considering doing that. The flexibility around lunchbreaks is aimed at the self-employed or small businesses where arbitrary one-size-fits-all rules are completely impractical.
    
    There’s a lot more policy to come, so hang on to your steak ‘n’ cheese 😀

      I think that the complaints reflect that there seems to be plenty of policy difference – National have them and Labour don’t. However, the only policy difference I care about right now is the Covid bullshit.
      
      If National don’t offer a genuine alternative, involving never going about level 2 (preferably level 1) under any circumstances whatsoever, then Labour may as well be in power. People are sick of this shit, and I sense that they couldn’t really care less about abstract policies that have no immediate effect on their lives.

  You misrepresent the lunch break rule, it allows for circumstances if for example a) A worker wants to only have smoke break so they can leave work 30 minutes to say pick up school kids, or 2) workers are working on a job where say an extra 10 minutes would have it finished so they would have lunch 10 minutes later rather than say a set 12:30 start time

  The stupid law says a heat pump has to be installed in the living area. So my landlord put one into the living area. Into the sunniest, warmest room in the house. Meanwhile, the other end of the house that gets no sun and always feels a little chilly has no heating.         National’s approach is to scrap the current flawed RMA legislation, and replace it with two seperate laws, a Natural and Built Environments Act (NBEA) and a Strategic Planning Act (SPA).

    We built a rental, only a couple of years old, put shower domes in both bathrooms to prevent moisture issues. Didn’t put an extractor in the ensuite (as there is no bath) and with the shower dome no moisture, but lo-and-behold, new law means we have to install an extractor fan or we can be fined. I’ve spoken to them about the situation. They understand there is no moisture issue, BUT we must do it by June (?) 2021. Madness!

      I’m more concerned, in the long run; about Kohlberg’s series for moral development and the societal impact of not learning the basics.
      
      According to Kohlberg’s theory (widely accepted), one cannot advance in ones moral, social and societal development, until one has mastered the concrete (of which the three Rs – reading, writing, ‘rithmetic) are central, as well as concepts like “good” and “bad” and their extensions “safe”, “unsafe” etc for self and others. Only then can one move onto the types of complex abstract thinking that underpins law and order, societal norms, governance etc.

My parents had a covid test in the weekend.
Their doctor phoned them and said you’re older, you’re in the more at risk group, you should have a covid test.
So they went to the doctor, had the test.
They had no symptoms, had not been in contact with anyone who has tested positive, had not been to any venues where someone who has tested positive has been, had not been to large gatherings etc.
Predictably, the results were negative.
So why did the doctor call them in for a test?
Statistics?
Or to get the payment from the Government?

    On top of this, my mum complained about the booklet that the Government is distributing through community groups to people who don’t have a smartphone, so they can keep track of where they’ve been.
    I said, yes what a waste of money when any piece of paper a person already has can be used. There is no point to the booklet except to allow the Government to say how wonderful they are caring about people.
    She replied, yes, this booklet should have been delivered to every house so that people don’t have to track one down themselves by contacting Age Concern etc.

Stuff reports on missing French boy Eloi . They mention the other people missing in the Waitakeres where no bodies or evidence has been found. Iraena Asher in 2004, Kim Bambus in 2017 and Cherie Vousden in 2012. (Both missing from Mercer Bay Track Carpark).

But Stuff excluded to mention missing Chinese student Laurence Wu missing June 2019 . Why? Laurence Wu went missing from the Piha Western Carpark. No body found and missing iphone x. His parents posted a huge reward and funded their own helicopter searches with no results. If you’re committing suicide and going for a swim do you take your iphone x? Do you take your shoes off? Does no body or clothing wash back up. What evidence was there. Where is the investigative reporting?

The public deserve more information. Are we really to believe they are all suicides. That the two women fell of Mercer bay cliffs and no bodies or clothing wash up. Cars unlocked – weird. Have they had dogs through the deepest parts of the forest. What about the cameras they put up to spot people entering the Waitakeres have they been checked?

The Waitakere’s are a convenient black hole where if people go missing we dismiss the outcome. Must be suicide body taken away by a rip?

So the Government admits defeat and have given up trying to find the origin of the community transmission of COVID that has put us into these latest lockdowns.
It would appear to me there is something the family is not telling officials if it can’t be traced.
Will any journalist bother trying to get an answer out of the Minister of Health?
If we were able to easily track down the very first COVID case back in February, why is this one proving to be so hard?
My answer: the family has not been completely open with officials about their movements.
I don’t care if you call me a conspiracy theorist – its simply the only answer at this point.

      What we know is this virus came from overseas, that means a failure at the border. The government is to blame for that. And more than likely they came into contact with someone else that passed it on.
      
      Take a look at our isolation hotels, you can be in day 13 ready to leave when new people are let into the hotel, so someone leaving could get the virus from a new arrival. People working the borders and flight staff not tested. Nurses jumping between their normal work and isolation hotels. All it takes is for one person who has no idea they had the virus to get it, pass it on, and you have how they got it without knowing.
      
      Our contact and tracing system is shit. I was at a place a few weeks ago and an elderly man was there, told the owner of the businesses he had just been tested for COVID and got a negative, said it took them over a week to contact him and tell him that when in Queenstown he had been in contact with the South Korean that had it. He was furious, said that in that week he had been in contact with over 500 people he could of given it to

Rural Chinese are moving to the cities, and tiny holdings of an acre or two become available for merging into more economic farms.

    The process of conversion into hydrogen wastes a whole lot of energy. Then it is a pig to store because hydrogen molecules are so small and are readily moved as ions.
    
    The carbon still has to go somewhere. Far better to just burn the coal or gas or use the electricity as electricity.
    
    This is just another “green economy opportunity” aka another massive way to waste energy and money.

      Biggest issue on my mind is storage and transportation. Currently you can either use Methanol and/or Ammonia.
      Definately would not currently be a good time to do a roadside rescue for the Fire service during a crash, Spill.
      The idea has been floating around for a while and agree NZ best way to produce it via hydro power and Gas. Shame Oil and Gas industry is collapsed by the Government. Bit of own goal there hence Hydrogen is not economically viable however prime opportunity for Tiwai point and Bluff harbour to export from.

      so approx 4.7l of hydrogen =350km
      the average usage is about 12000Km

      5 million cars in NZ
      7mill l of water needed per per year, to run cars
      1/10 of lake taupo.

The ‘Great unwashed’ in Porirua will vote Labour by habit (and probably because their pastor tells them to), the residents of Taranaki; not so likely to, so therefore they (the Taranaki-ites) must be ‘persuaded’ that the great, beneficent CoL has their interests at heart.

What better way than by buying a school ‘cos ‘Think of the jobs that will be created’ etc. etc.

It’s all to do with votes, especially in a region which has ‘Little’ love for Labour or it’s cronies…

I see the Religion of Peace has been active in Birmingham overnight, with very little coverage in MSM after the initial report. West Midlands Police, one of the more stupid forces in the UK (which is really saying something) have again covered themselves in glory.

Firstly, in what can only be described as brilliant detective work, after several hours they declared they were launching a murder enquiry. This after a “knife-man” stabbed one person to death and injured 6 or 7 others, all captured on CCTV.

Next, they warned members of the public to be vigilant, yet refused to issue any description of the attacker. Literally hundreds of requests were made on their official Twitter account, asking who or what is was they should be vigilant about, and pointing out that Birmingham was one of the more heavily surveiled cities in the world. Eventually, they released a bit of CCTV footage, clearly showing the stabber to be a young, slim man of Middle Eastern appearance.

Finally, in what must be the supreme example of stupidity and desperation, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson, offered this pearl of wisdom”

Jamieson said a rise in violence was “almost inevitable” as a result of the pandemic, with people “not being able to get out, and combine that with people who are now unsure about their future and about their jobs”.

Stuff has revealed, courtesy of a work colleague, that man who died with conditions related to COVID-19 from the new Auckland cluster had heart problems.
Given COVID attacks the respiratory system, having a heart condition would certainly not be conducive to recovery. Sympathy to his family.
Why, when the death was announced by Ashley Bloomfield last week did he not reveal the pre-existing condition, given he did so with all of the previous deaths?

I listened to a few minutes of RNZ doing a fake news piece this morning.

Suzy Fergusson and one of their journalists did a fake interview with her “asking” questions and him reading scripted responses.

From the sound of it the questions and the answers were not even a single recording but were spliced after the fact to make it sound like an interview.

Matariki our 12th public holiday. My wife has to work most public holidays. she gets 53$ per hr and gets double time plus a day in lieu for working those days. She is a an ED Nurse practitioner. Thet PH just earned her/cost the tax payer $1400 each year!

A major policy announcement from the PM this afternoon; from 2022, Matariki will become the 12th public holiday on the calendar.

Thanks for nothing PM. Sure workers will appreciate another holiday, but do you realise that those of us foolish enough to employ staff will actually have to pay them, even though they’re not working. That’s another day’s productivity lost, and employees come back to work the next day and are chasing their tails to get their work done by the end of the week.

Virtue signalling is fine, but with it come a cost, and it’s small businesses right around the country who will bear that cost. So once again, thanks for bloody nothing PM.

  Huh? Has he not heard of Waitangi Day?
  
  But also, do we actually NEED a public holiday to “give Maori a chance to share their traditions, history and stories?” Every year when Matariki rolls around, there are numerous Matariki festivals and celebrations that take place throughout the country.
  
  Last year there was a Matariki Dawn Karakia at Pukekawa in the Auckland Domain on June 22; then from June 25-30, the team from something called the Maori Kitchen apparently dug up the lawn at Britomart’s Takutai Square to lay down a hangi; the Auckland Harbour Bridge was lit up Matariki every Friday and Saturday night between 6pm and midnight; there were celebrations at Silo Park on the first weekend of July with entertainment, art and food; Auckland Zoo did their bit, running two night sessions in the Domes in July; there was an urban street party held on Federal St in the CBD. And that’s just Auckland.
  
  Television celebrates it, many big companies recognise it and put on events. I swear that there is no way you can possibly live in New Zealand and be unaware that Matariki is going on.
  
  And it not’s like Matariki is the ONLY time that gives “Maori a chance to share their traditions, history and stories.”
  
  As excuses go, this one’s pretty weak Kelvin.

  National will get behind this. It’s just a smart move for many reasons.
  1) Obviously most people like a holiday
  2) We don’t yet have a holiday on our calendar that comes from Tikanga Maori (Waitangi Day is not a Maori holiday)
  3) Public holidays actually produce an increase in domestic spending, particularly for tourism and retail, the economic benefits for the country far outweigh any lost production.
  4) Voting against a public holiday just makes you look like a killjoy to everyone except kiwiblog.

  At the Waikato University web site describes Professor Rangi Matamua as one of the world’s foremost indigenous astronomers and scholars leading the revitalisation, protection and dissemination of Maori astronomy and Maori knowledge.
  
  Parahi says Matamua doesn’t think a statutory holiday should be called Matariki. He would prefer to use te matahi o te tau, the new year.
  
  So the rest of us would likely call the holiday Maori New Year.

Only 500000 downloads, so about 10% of the population have bothered. Wonder how many of those 10% actually bother to use it?

I have to say it was a PITA to register with verification emails, etc.

13 leading doctors and surgeons pen a letter to Victoria’s Dictator Dan about the negative effects of continued lockdowns.
In the letter they point out the inconvenient truth about the number of deaths by comparison to annual death numbers for cancer and heart disease. They also point out that, on average 114 Victorians die every day and so far and on average 3 of those daily deaths have been in some way related to COVID. No one mentions the other 111.
Every day the State is further in lockdown, the less prognosis is completed on other serious and treatable diseases as Victorians have been scared so much they are not going to see their GPs or specialists.
Does anyone think Dictator Dan took any notice?

        2. Replacing humans with machines (eg, self service kiosks)
        3. Online
        4, AI
        
        If you make it less economic to employ someone, the end result is unemployment for the ones that lack productivity or can easily be replaced with a cheaper alternative.

  Wages are low in New Zealand because of low productivity. This extra Holliday will help keep wages lower than they could be but it is a hidden “tax” on workers and consumers who will be paying higher prices.
  
  Exporters will be hit harder because they compete globally and will not be able to raise prices like local businesses that do not export. Net result again is a lower standard of living for all Kiwis.
  
  Unfortunately many people don’t realize this and will vote Labour just to get the extra Holliday despite that they won’t actually get any financial benefit from it.

      Neither is the ability to actually use fact. Productivity has been on the increase for quite some time, in fact, it has well eclipsed wage rises. You could argue that if we were to match productivity increases with holidays we would need at least three.

Student-visa rorts continue.

Radio NZ tonight broadcast a report about a university move to set up separate isolation facilities in Auckland to allow foreign students to resume study in the city.

An interesting comment was made by a Chinese student representative. She said that many (did she say thousands?) of Chinese students wanted to return now and continue their studies so they wouldn ‘t lose their rights to NZ work visas. These of course lead to citizenship.

The universities, the polytechnics, and the many foreign owned student colleges in NZ, sold this country out by providing a path to citizenship as the lure to study here.

Time to stop this rort, which is the main cause of the population blow-out (we are at the top of population growth in developed countries).

    Nobody was in danger, it was self-inflicted which is perhaps the kicker here.
    
    The Travis sheriff’s office released more information about the boat parade:
    – 5 boats sank, 2 towed, 3 still submerged.
    – Most boats that took on water were towed before sinking.
    – Weather was calm. Large boats generated waves.
    – No evidence of foul play.

“both major party’s ” have brought out significant policies today.
Labour…..a new and additional public holiday which is a blatant bribe to unions and Maori organizations.
Which can only hurt the economy they damaged with their ridiculous policies so far.
