Nancy pelosi and other dems are calling for them to be canceled, joes taken 4 days off campaigning to prepare(he had a hard day campaigning friday and was exhausted by 9.30am)

so whats the chances joe…
gets covid.
gets lost on the way
demands it not be live broadcast.

add in riots etc that stop it going ahead

what other “random acts” do you think will prevent the debates happening?

  The Dem machine is discovering that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Putting up a cognitively impaired Manchurian candidate makes for easy manipulation of said candidate, but increases the risk that previously loyal partisans may actually see though the charade.
  
  Like you, I fully expect Biden won’t participate in the debate. There will be some pretext for him not being available.
  
  If by some miracle he does show, the best strategy for Trump would be to ignore him completely, and use the event as a campaign speech. He definitely shouldn’t ridicule Biden’s mental capacity. It will be obvious to all, and any ridicule could result in sympathy support.

  Susan St. John this morning on newstalk zb telling us we should all pay wealth tax on an assumed 3% income of any asset except a modest home. So that beneficiary families can get the extra money of working for families.

  St John: If you think families need more than they are getting, start a foundation and persuade people to donate. Don’t force taxpayers who have bothered to save up for their families and retirement.
  
  St. John and interviewer were implying that ‘wealthy’ people live frivolous lives “you only need so many dresses”, instead of working bloody hard, often in jobs we don’t like and living frugally. And most importantly: not having children we can’t support.

    With regard to poor families, does nobody ever think that perhaps there should be some way to give a disincentive to having ever more children when they can’t afford them. Perhaps it should be said that having children whilst on a benefit won’t get them any more money. Mistakes happen but too many are using the benefit as a lifestyle choice and having many children to different fathers so they can receive more money. It doesn’t seem to enter their heads that babies cost money. Probably why so many have bad outcomes and babies taken off them because of dodgy parents.

The Guardian tells the world –
In New Zealand, we saw it in the June quarter unemployment figures. Ninety percent of the 11,000 New Zealanders who had at lost their jobs due to Covid-19 were women.

Now, however, facing the worst global recession since the great depression of the 1920s, the Labour party is returning to being active in the job creation market by borrowing to invest in large-scale private sector infrastructure projects, and promising to create more than 20,000 jobs on “shovel ready” projects.

So how much work in the personal care industries (hairdressers, manicurists, beauticians, domestic cleaners, personal trainers, gymnasiums) – largely done by women convert to “ shovel ready” projects.

In the first major party leaders debate this week, Jacinda Ardern also introduced us to the term “double-duty”, referring to her party’s plans to invest in infrastructure, like the new Dunedin hospital, and in free trades training to create jobs for people to build the hospital. Said Ardern: “We get a double whammy of both building a facility and training our young people.”

Slogans, “shovel ready”, “double duty” are like “go hard and early”, when you did neither (over three weeks to do the first 1,000 tests), or Fyfe, Tyndall and others flew in 7 plane loads of PPE gear to cover shortfalls, or “They are us” when the outcome of the Islamic Women’s Community contribution to the Royal Commission into the Christchurch Mosque Massacres, already available, shows they do not believe that to have been true at all.

So, without being too sexist, explain how does largely “shove ready” employment relieve largely female loss of work?

Jacinda had no Labour policies last Election (hence so many working committees) and now hiding behind Covid-19, she still has no policies, but a trail of utter fuck-ups: kiwibuild, reclassifying povidy, her Maori team destroying more (special schools) than it ever puts in place, Ihuamtao, and counting trees planted but not cut down.

  Shovel ready infrastructure jobs has me permanently amused because where’s the skilled labour force to do it? NZ never had enough labour to build 10,000 homes a year, to plant 1 billion trees. With wanting to cut immigrant labour how else was labour going to not only build these houses and plant the trees but how were they going to house the labour force needed? Why don’t the Police do they job they are paid for?
After a flight yesterday the Police spoke to Billy Te Kahika Jr for “incorrectly” wearing a mask. A stewardess had complained about the manner of his wearing it and he may have have been possibly non-compliant under the Civil Aviation Act for not following the orders of the pilot-in-command.*
Police would not initiate proceedings under that Act–this seems like harassment.

Get the crims out of Ihumatao before the people do. Ardern’s R.’s law is not our law and the Police are in severe breach of their duty in not recognising that.

  “The Covid-19 legislation does not refer to masks, but the Civil Aviation Act requires passengers comply with orders from the pilot-in-command.”
  There’s been a couple of examples of well know people who have butted heads with the aviation industry without being taken “downtown”. However if Billy TK continues to piss off AirNZ he might be restricted to Intercity buses.

    In 2008, 13,016 people – 0.56% of those who cast a valid vote (13,016 / 2,344,566) – gave their Party vote to The Bill and Ben Party. All they did was waste their vote.
    
    This time around, like it or not, anyone who gives their Party vote for a party other than Labour, National, ACT NZ, or The Green Party, will be wasting their vote, too.

I know Tonga well, with its poverty, its porous border controls, its 3rd world health system, its rampant corruption and less than law-abiding population. The global media now report the number of cases of COVID, no longer focusing on deaths because that number continues to decline. It is minuscule. Hospitalizations are also next to nothing.

AND the definition of “cases” now means any positive test result. A “case” use to mean someone who turned up at the hospital they were so sick and THEN tested positive.

On the subject of weather, rain and water, on Friday, Goofy/Auckland Council and Watercare eased water restrictions for Auckland. This despite the dams being on average 28% below usual seasonal averages and no remedial measures have been put in place for Rodney.

In Rodney, if there is a dry summer, there will be problems. Warkworth relies on a single reservoir feed by an underground water table. The problem is many of us up here know there has been insufficient winter rain to replenish water sources. We know because on our property cracks in the ground 5hat open last summer are still there and ground beneath is none dry. If we are just 1 rural block of land in Rodney, what of the rest of the district?

To add to Warkworth’s water woes, more development on the edge of the town is planned, where will water resources come from for these developments? Where is the strategic thinking and planning of Auckland Council and Watercare?

  Here is an idea – build a couple of dams. How long since the last major urban water supply dam was built in Auckland and Northland?
  
  The same goes for Hawkes Bay. Build a dam that can supply water for irrigation looking ahead 100 years and levy farmers over a long time period to recover the costs.
  
  Why can’t this country join the developed world and build roads, dams and other vital infrastructure? All this could be paid for and more by scrapping absurdly wasteful current and capital expenditure. Northland and Hawkes Bay run dry while we give money to people to “research and write the first draft of a novel about male affection in hypermasculine spaces”. No I did not make that up.

Auckland is an absolute basket case, apart from water restrictions, damaged railway tracks, a broken harbour bridge, stage 2 covid policy, while the rest of the country has stage 1, we have overpaid councillors incapable of putting any decent infrastructure in place despite the hordes moving into the city. I just can’t understand why Democrats would automatically oppose the appointment of Justice Amy Coney Barrett just for the sake of opposing her because she would be appointed by Trump’s administration. Surely if she’s qualified for the job, and it certainly appears that she is, why oppose it at all? Maybe there’s someone who knows more about SCOTUS appointments than I do, (and that’s probably most FB contributors), could offer an explanation? (I’m not talking about the timing issue pre-election, just the appointment itself?)

Rather than watching Jamie Lee Ross on TV3 this morning, I switched to TV1 and “Marae” where two of the candidates (Labour and Maori party) for one of the Maori seats were being interviewed.
Question was about their thoughts on Maori wards being approved in the New Plymouth District Council, and the fact they were subject to approval by citizen referenda.
Labour’s answer was that when Labour gets to govern alone, they plan to simply will pass legislation to abolish the right to hold citizen referenda as part of the decision process. What?
Yes, he goes on to say they want to “avoid the tyranny of the majority”.
I find this astonishing that he can calmly sit there and state the Labour policy to stomp on a democratic process.

  Darn you. Watching one George Carlin video leads to another, then another and soon you realize that half an hour has passed.
  
  For those of you that might not know, George was originally a stand-up comedian that wore a coat and tie (really)! He got kicked out of Las Vegas after calling the audience a bunch of a-holes ( he was having a bad night).
  
  George, his wife and son moved to Venice Beach California (next door to me) and metamorphosed into the hippy-dippy weatherman.
  
  He grew a beard, smoked a bit of dope and practiced his new routines nightly (for free) at a small coffee house called The Other Side.

    Have a look at this chart: https://www.electionresults.govt.nz/electionresults_2017/statistics/party-quotients.html.
    
    Notice how, in 2017, ACT NZ’s 13,095 Party votes meant it was allocated the 95th seat. Also, note how National was allocated the 120th seat with a quotient of 10,379.054 (1,152,075 / 111). Prima facie (and all else being equal, etc.), that means ACT would have been allocated the 120th seat had it received only 10,379 Party votes.
    
    As you will see in the link, above, and no doubt know anyway, the Sainte-Laguë seat-allocation formula is implemented by dividing the respective party’s Party vote totals, by 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, etc., and allocating the seats to the parties in descending order of the quotients so obtained, until all 120 seats have been allocated.
    
    That means, in 2017, ACT would have needed a minimum of 31,137 Party votes (10,379.054 x 3 = 31,137.162) to be allocated a second seat. In 2017, a total of 2,591,896 valid Party votes were cast. That means, to get a second seat, ACT needed 1.20% of the Party votes, instead of the 0.50% it actually received. And, it would have needed a minimum of 51,895 Party votes (2.00%) to be allocated a third seat (10,379.054 x 5 = 51,895.27).
    
    Given that, hopefully, we are likely to see a greater turnout next month than the 79.75% recorded in 2017, and that there are going to be significantly more valid Party votes cast, ACT will likely need somewhere around 33,000+ votes, to be allocated a second seat (and about 55,000+ votes, to be allocated a third seat).
    
    I hope the foregoing gives you the information you sought.

      Just to clarify, coming up with figures the way I have is fraught with difficulty. They depend on turnout, the number of parties that cross the threshold, and the percentage of wasted Party votes.
      
      Also, when I referred to ACT being allocated a second, or third, seat, I was referring to such seats being the 120th seat to be allocated. In other words, my estimated numbers of Party votes ACT will need next month, are minimum figures.

From your posts on STV, that system is even worse for average voter although it might be fair. No 9ne should be asked to vote using a system they don’t understand.
        
        I find that anything that cannot be easily understood and used by a lay person,but requires trust in a specialist, is a bad thing for democracy.
        
        On a slight tangent, I have the same view on anything you are being charged for that you cannot understand the charges and compute them for yourself. A good example is money transfers or mortgage payment calcs. The ultimate is climate change greenhouse gas emission calcs. The company doing the calculation and charging, usually says trust us, it is too complicated for you to understand.
        
        In my experience you definitely must not trust them.

        At first sight, these things look hard, but they’re not really. My STV mentor, who, very sadly, is no longer with us, once told me that when Isaac Newton developed calculus in the 17th century, his papers describing this new branch of mathematics were extremely complicated. It took others to simplify the calculations, to the point where, today, anyone can be taught it.
        
        It’s the same with divisor methods of allocating seats to parties (such as the Sainte-Laguë method), or seats to (US) states (such as the Method of Equal Proportions). I’m no mathematician, but I am interested in these things, so, many years ago, I set out to learn and understand how they work.
        
        If you want a better understanding of how NZ STV works, I recommend you read my five explanatory papers, at https://dunedinstadium.wordpress.com/2010/08/26/in-defence-of-stv-2/, particularly the third and fifth papers. The five PDFs are set out at the foot of the article, “In defence of STV”.
        
        As you read through the fifth article, which describes in meticulous detail how the votes in the 2004 Cargill Ward (Dunedin) election were counted, you will see just how logical and straightforward STV is – and that it can easily “be understood by a lay person.” As I say to people who tell me STV is too “complex”, or complicated, if I can understand it, anyone can.
        
        Also, don’t forget, STV has been used in public elections – in Tasmania, Ireland and Malta – for a century or more now. Indeed, the Irish people have twice voted (in 1959 and 1968) to retain STV to elect their parliament. And, it was the alternative method of election (to MMP) considered by The Royal Commission on the Electoral System, in their Report, “Towards a Better Democracy” (December 1986).

        Notice, how, in 2014, United Future received 5,286 Party votes, but that the 120th highest quotient (National) was 9,508.412. That means United Future did not receive a sufficient number of Party votes to be allocated even one of the 120 seats in Parliament that election.
        
        Therefore, during the 2014–2017 term, Parliament comprised 121 seats.

Perhaps one of the legal types who follow Kiwiblog can explain for us the implications of the case that threatens to bankrupt Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt.

As I read it, a councillor sued him, appealed and so on, incurring quite large legal bills. The councillor lost and was saddled with costs for both of them.

The councillor then became bankrupt.

Shadbolt has been left with large legal bills for both parties, and this threatens to bankrupt him.

Don’t lawyers have to carry any of the financial risk if their client can’t pay in such an action?
Can they just load their bill on to the opposition party, even if that is the party that “won” the action?

Does this case imply that kamikaze defamation actions could be brought by anyone prepared to go bankrupt themselves?

The other guy’s lawyers are no doubt in the queue with their hands out unless they had the good sense to get the money up front or agreed to do it on a “no win, no fee” basis. A liberal who worked with Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court says Barrett is a good choice, although he doesn’t agree with all of her philosophy.

I disagree with much of her judicial philosophy and expect to disagree with many, maybe even most of her future votes and opinions. Yet despite this disagreement, I know her to be a brilliant and conscientious lawyer who will analyze and decide cases in good faith, applying the jurisprudential principles to which she is committed. Those are the basic criteria for being a good justice. Barrett meets and exceeds them.

I got to know Barrett more than 20 years ago when we clerked at the Supreme Court during the 1998-99 term. Of the thirty-some clerks that year, all of whom had graduated at the top of their law school classes and done prestigious appellate clerkships before coming to work at the court, Barrett stood out. Measured subjectively and unscientifically by pure legal acumen, she was one of the two strongest lawyers. […]

To add to her merits, Barrett is a sincere, lovely person. I never heard her utter a word that wasn’t thoughtful and kind — including in the heat of real disagreement about important subjects. She will be an ideal colleague. I don’t really believe in “judicial temperament,” because some of the greatest justices were irascible, difficult and mercurial. But if you do believe in an ideal judicial temperament of calm and decorum, rest assured that Barrett has it. […]

We have a Supreme Court nominee who is a brilliant lawyer, a genuine and good person — and someone who holds views about how to interpret the law that I think are wrong and, in certain respects, misguided. I hope the senators at her hearing treat her with respect.

And when she is confirmed, I am going to accept it as the consequence of the constitutional rules we have and the choices we collectively and individually have made. And I’m going to be confident that Barrett is going to be a good justice, maybe even a great one — even if I disagree with her all the way.

There is one chemical that is known to be safe, known to be needed by many people anyway, known to have a clinically proven track record of helping people fight off respiratory diseases, and is so cheap no big firm is pushing it: vitamin D. It is not a silver bullet, but growing evidence suggests that it might help prevent Covid turning serious in some people.

The gold standard of medical research is the randomised controlled trial. The gold standard of medical research is the randomised controlled trial. Back in May, we had no such test for vitamin D and Covid-19. Now we do. The world’s first randomised control trial on vitamin D and Covid has just been published. The results are clear-cut. The trial, which took place in Spain at the Reina Sofía University Hospital, involved 76 patients suffering from Covid-19. Fifty of those patients were given vitamin D. The remaining 26 were not. Half of those not given Vitamin D became so sick that they needed to be put on intensive care. By comparison, only one person who was given Vitamin D requiring ICU admission.

Put another way, the use of Vitamin D reduced a patient’s risk of needing intensive care 25-fold. Two patients who did not receive Vitamin D died. And while the sample is too small to conclude that Vitamin D abolishes the risk of death in Covid patients, it is nonetheless an astonishing result, and corresponds with Prof Backman’s assertion that correcting vitamin deficiency might cut mortality by half.

The Government should now act on this latest evidence.

Halving Covid-19 IFR would render its lethality to ~0.14%, ie less than a regular influenza season.

There are two problems with this solution:
1. No $$$ for vaccine big-pharma
2. No fearful population to manipulate.

I simply do not believe that this “poll” represents what people are currently thinking about our government and our opposition.
It has no relationship at all with what I hear out there in the ordinary world: what I am hearing is that this lot has absolutely no idea what they are doing and what they have to do to get us out of this mess.
What I hear is that apart from Winston ( who has his own set of problems ) is that there is nobody who knows what they are doing as far as the economy is concerned.
Just who are these people who are “polled ” ?

I was born in the fifties, raised in the sixties. I am glad my parents have passed away. I cannot believe this country, lead by a communist, is where it is. My parents, who had to deal with losses in WW2, would be horrified. Glad they don’t have to see it. So here we are, on the cusp of being a socialist state. Words fail me.

  My grandfather as a boy on the Somme in WW1 had it easy. My parents, grandparents and other family members had it easy in WW2.
  
  The traumatic, devastating, horrifying, difficult circumstances of the past 6 months have been unbelievable. And to mount horror on horror “we are on the cusp of being a socialist state.”

The Quad can make life hard for Chinas space
program. They want a space station by 2022.
The ISS is set to be decommissioned. NASA
thinks a new one is crucial. It can’t be a Chinese one.
Trump wants to oppose China on all fronts. There can
be a public/private partnership. The Quad might be in a
position to achieve this.
