  I am foaming at the mouth already.
  
  But seriously – if you’re looking for a bad way to go it would be difficult to top Rabies. The disease quite literally drives its victims insane before it kills them. There is a vaccine but it is only effective if the patient receives it before they start developing symptoms. Nearly 60,000 people (the vast majority of whom live in third world countries) still die of Rabies every year.

    I think that the first person thought to have been cured of rabies without receiving the vaccine happened a couple of years or so ago, in the US. A child I think, and a lot of intensive care, heavy sedation, etc, and they managed to pull through.

    Yes very nasty. I visited India a couple of years back. I debated whether to get the vaccine (it is about $400) but did get it in the end. You still need to get medical treatment but the vaccine gives you time, and the treatment is less complicated. The scary thing about rabies is that once the symptoms start it is 100 percent fatal. The symptoms usually start within a few days of being bitten, but there are cases of the symptoms emerging years after the bite – and of course long after the victim would even be able to recall being bitten.

    A colleague was bitten by a monkey in Nepal some years ago and underwent treatment locally. She said that it involved several very painful injections into the stomach region and I have avoided monkeys and dogs in dodgy regions ever since.

Although the polls in New Zealand are not quite where we would want them to be, we can look to the USA to see how far polling can be off. According to the polls Joe Biden is ahead of Donald Trump by 5 to 10 points.

However if we look at the measure of enthusiasm we can see that Pres Trump is well ahead. According to estimates he has had 241,000 people attend his campaign rallies. In the same time Joe Biden has had 84 people attend his campaign rallies. That is 84 in total. Just let that sink in for a moment.

At the same time in 2016 it was noted that Hillary Clinton could barely fill an average sized high school gymnasium. At the same time Donald Trump was filling stadiums.

Now in 2020 it’s worse. Joe Biden cannot seem to muster a crowd of even 100 people to his campaign events. At least in 2016 Hillary Clinton could use Bruce Springsteen and Beyoncé to pull in a big crowd. Joe Biden probably doesn’t know who Beyoncé is?

It is impossible to see the lack of enthusiasm for Joe Biden on the ground and imagine that in November he will be elected President of the United States by a wave of enthusiastic voters. There simply is no enthusiasm for Joe Biden.

On the other hand enthusiasm for Donald Trump among his supporters is off the charts. Rallies, yard signs, even boat rallies all show massive enthusiasm for Pres Trump. Could it be that the polls in America are way off?

    That’s usually not wrong, but this time there does seem to be a big disconnect in enthusiasm, and it is necessary to get ones supporters to actually vote. And the Democrats (apart from the rioters) don’t seem at all enthused. Jill Biden had a campaign event in Nebraska, 9 attendees; they had a car parade for Joe, 5 cars. If the media was doing its job this should surely be newsworthy, but crickets.
    
    And what’s up with Joe, his campaign is having no show days (called putting a lid on for the day) about every third or fourth day. On the day ACB was nominated, Biden’s campaign called a lid at 9:30 that day. They’re trying to spin it as “debate preparation” but that doesn’t really work as it has been happening for a month. Is Biden not physically capable of campaigning for more than a few hours ? A couple of time s recently he’s come on to speak and has been almost gasping for breath, seemingly out of breath from walking a few paces. And where’s Harris, 45 days of campaign and not a single press conference ?
    
    Is this a new strategy, don’t front and hope that the voters don’t notice who is on the ticket ?

  No, she’s right. When experts communicate with the public, they don’t just give us facts. They give us analysis based on facts. In theory that analysis could be done in a way that is completely objective and independent of the biases of the expert, but in practice this seldom happens. Knowing the values of the person doing the analysis is useful information and it would be good if more experts would provide that.

  Entire fields of science, namely the social sciences and psychology, are in a replication crisis right now, for example. Many of their most supposedly well established claims have been shown to not be well established. Certain kinds of people tend to go in to certain fields. This can cause a field to be saturated with a particular bias that affects their work. When 1 out of 4 psychology professors openly admit to being radical and marxist, dont be surprised if huge errors go unnoticed for a long time in the field.

  To the best of my knoweldge, Siouxsie Wiles plays no offical role i.e., providing advice, to the Government on what the response to the global coronavirus pandemic should be, or is.
  
  She is an academic and a science communicator who has expertise in this area and to who THE MEDIA turn to for help and input in their attempts to understand what is going on and what x, y and z mean and why A, B and C should or should not be done. In that capacity she is simply carrying out her role as a critic and conscience of society, a legally mandated role that all our Universities (and their academics) are encouraged to provide. That is to provide independent informed commentary on the issues of the day.
  
  For some people in here to keep on banging away at her in the way they do is verging on the obsessional, and delusional……….

    Yes. I agree. I have heard her for a long time as a great science commentator in RNZ. When the covid stuff started she seemed well placed to comment and seemed the explain things well and be well informed. I always imagined her as an older dowdy English woman. So I was surprised she had weird hair and was younger. Her appearance seemed to cause something of a backlash against her on the right. I can agree you can dislike her opinion but on here and elsewhere it went beyond that into real hatred. Not sure if she deserved that. She was always just a science commentator. Her problem lately is that she is commenting on politics. And if she wants to keep being an impartial science commentator, I don’t think she can publicly do both. She can’t praise Ardern and then agree with her position on some covid policy. It does not work.

    She later apologised for making it personal, albeit without naming Thornley. Not before Auckland University of Technology Professor of Public Health Grant Schofield jumped in to back Thornley. Schofield, too, made it personal.
    
    Accusing someone of being out of their scientific “lane” without discussing data wasn’t acceptable, he said on Twitter, adding: “Some would criticise you a microbiologist in public health.”

    Why, they’re not burning, looting, or pillaging, despite the MSM’s heroic efforts to make it seem that way.
    
    Part of the BLM strategy is to try to get an overt response from groups like PB, and that is one reason they are deliberately provocative, attacking random people, smashing up (mostly minority owned) businesses, random arson, etc. They want a violent response so they can claim victim hood – as they know that the MSM will entirely twist the narrative to help.
    
    But it isn’t really working. Despite the lies in the media about right wing provocateurs we can be assured that this is not happening otherwise some of those arrested would be actually charged and not released by complicit local prosecutors.
    
    So you’re just trying the “look, a squirrel” tactic Mikey. Proud Boys are the merest of blips on the radar in the mayhem and violence being promoted by the Democrats and the left, and you should be able to recognise that, if you had any sense of ethics and a brain.

Race relations is another big issue and at present the leader of the opposition appears to be missing in action. Not so Act leader David Seymour who recently commented on Winston Peters revelation that he threatened to pull the pin on the coalition government if the government brought the land to give to the protesters. Seymour said “Peters could have promoted one law for all inside Cabinet. Instead, he’s rolled it out three weeks before the election.”

To my mind David Seymour is making sense on this issue. Here is the full context. This from the latest newsletter from Don Brash talking about race relations and particularly the debacle at Ihumatoa.

“Ihumatao is perhaps the most visible race-relations shambles that the next government will have to fix.

Located near Auckland Airport, Ihumatao is where activists have protested against Fletcher’s plans to build almost 500 homes on land that it bought from a private owner whose family had owned it since it had been confiscated in 1863 as a consequence of tribal rebellions.

Despite a number of Treaty settlements involving the area, protesters say that the land should be given “to Maori” although it is unclear which Maori.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern foolishly got involved and construction at the site was halted in July last year while a solution was sought. More than a year has passed and nothing has been announced, despite speculation throughout the year that a deal was near.

New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters on Friday revealed that he had threatened to pull the pin on the Coalition Government if the Government bought the land to give to the protesters.

ACT MP David Seymour responded by saying that Peters created the situation at Ihumatao when he made Ardern PM and asserted that “Peters could have promoted one law for all inside Cabinet. Instead, he’s rolled it out three weeks before the election.”

  The entire system of compulsory isolation by the government of incoming travellers who may have covid, denies section 25 of the Human Rights Act: that people are assumed innocent until found guilty, but in this case must quarantine as demanded by the Government, because the Government does not trust them to isolate themselves properly and assumes they would not adequately follow prescribed medical requirements, so confine them to hotels rather than allowing them to isolate in their own homes when do they have them.
  
  Given the assumptions the Government has taken in their covid actions, as above, am I able, in similar way, to be as assumptive to suggest that nothing commercial will ever be constructed at Ihumātoa that will not at a future date be cast down again, set on fire or otherwise de-constructed?
  
  Has not New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters, on Friday revealing that he had threatened to pull the pin on the Coalition Government that he had created if the Government bought the land to give to the protesters, indicated the above suggestion is more likely than not?

  Ihumatao is a cluster and caused by a captain’s call. There are a whole lot of people watching for the outcome, provided there actually is one in our lifetimes. Meantime I certainly hope that the lawful owner is keeping excellent track of costs incurred including interest and also ensuring that capital gains are included in any deal.
  
  If there is a change of government and any deal is off the table there will still need to be compensation paid to Fletchers unless the company chooses to forgo that. Many shareholders aka owners of the company will be ropable if that is the case..
  
  In any case Fletchers will be glad to be shot of the land, and hopefully will think hard and long about entering into any other potentially contentious purchases, especially for specious cultural reasons.

“Last night, Tova O’Brien and her Newshub spin doctors decided their Reid Research poll result suggested National was in a “death spiral”.

This completely twisted narrative was presented despite a poll that showed gains and losses over the past two months of:

Labour: -10.8%
Greens: +0.8%
NZ First: -0.1%
(Downward swing: -10.1%)

National: +4.5%
ACT: +3%
New Conservatives: +1.2%
(Upward swing: 8.7%)

In total that is a swing of 18.8% from the current governing parties towards a potential alternative government of the three right wing parties mentioned.

Given the Colmar Brunton poll showed a result not to dis-similar to the Reid Research poll. Let’s look at what would need to happen for a potential National-led government:

Labour 44.5 (-3.5)
National 34.5 (+3.5)
ACT 6 (no change)
Greens 4.9 (-1.1)
New Conservative 5 (+3.4)

Firstly, this would require more 2017 National voters to return from Labour, yet we can see that this is already occurring.

Secondly, it requires a relatively small drop in polling for the Greens, with the potential that polling is already over-estimating their support.

Lastly, and most crucially, it would require a surge from the New Conservatives in the final weeks. This party was previously the fifth most popular party in the 2011 and 2014 elections.

Last night’s poll suggested the New Conservatives are again the fifth most popular party in New Zealand, with a result higher than that of New Zealand First.

For any chance of the New Conservatives making a late surge, their leader – Leighton Baker – must be included in next week’s TVNZ multi-party leaders debate.

For the next week, everyone on the right should be messaging, e-mailing, tweeting, phoning or doing whatever you can to make sure this happens.

If the New Conservatives can eat up the rest of NZ First’s support and pick up a few more votes along the way, there is a real possibility that we can get rid of this Labour-led government before it is too late.”

Sky news Australia reported last week that a group of Warriors supporters who racially abused a Panthers player during a NRL game and escorted out of the stadium have been forgiven!

The NRL stated they would get tough on racial abuse during games but apparently an apology was sufficient by these supporters and plus they were forgiven by this Panthers player.

Why as Sky news Aust asked?

Because some of these Warriors supporters were of Maori descent.

If it was only white guys abusing a non- white player during the game we know they would have been vilified.

I heard Jacinda interviewed by Mike Hosking this morning. She sounded terrible, really struggling with a croaky voice and repeated upwards inflexions at the end of her comments. It has been noted by voice experts that the upward inflexion, common among teenagers, is a sign of lack of confidence and a plea for approval. Well I can tell her one thing for certain, she’ll get no approval from me.

China has a VERY stringent definition of what constitutes a Covid case – requiring presence of clinical signs and symptoms AND in most cases, epidemiological exposure, AND a positive PCR test (at 35 amplification cycles or less) before counting a Covid case according to this.

By contrast, the WHO, the US CDC, the European CDPC, Public Health England, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and the Pan American Health Organization require ONLY a single positive PCR test in order to count a Covid case – clinical symptoms and epidemiological exposure are not required. This would mean that many countries are significantly over-counting its cases (and, potentially, its deaths) compared to China.

It’s odd that the WHO has apparently not noticed this anomaly and acted to ensure uniform international standards and definitions so that statistics are internationally comparable.

It is also rather odd that both the CDC and the WHO had guidelines in place to minimise over counting of cases for previous viral outbreaks including SARS, MERS, Ebola and Zika, yet these safeguards have been removed in respect of SARS-CoV2… ?

We are falling behind the rest of the world, so it is an outrage that we don’t have enough for life saving medicine but we do have $50 million for plastics technology grants.   Ms Ardern has consistently been held to a different standard of truth and achievement by the msm to an extent that has seldom, if ever, been afforded to any other politician.

Article is strange because, according to graphic 57% of those planning to vote for ACT voted NATS, LAB, and MRI in 2017. So native ACT voters are 43% of the 6.3% of party votes. (Article does not say anything about ACT voters’ intentions)

But ACT only got 0.5% of party votes in 2017.

Where are the rest of ACT votes coming from to give them 6.3%.

Something does not add up.

I just heard the political “commentators” on Kathryn Ryan’s 9 to noon, Nat radio. As usual the commentary was very slanted against National and pro Lablour but at least the woman speaker was more measured. In contrast the left speaker, some man with Neal in his name, either first name or surname, I didn’t quite catch it, who works for Labour was positively vitriolic against National. His uncalled for and snide remarks about the Nat party and Judith didn’t sound to me like someone who was confident his party would win. Otherwise why would you be so nasty? It does you no favours. I suspect their internal polling is not so hot.

First what are the “Must Have” Health ,education ,housing” then what are the good to haves ” welfare,roads” then there are the nice to haves ” Art, media,culture,sport. Reading this remind me of the line from The Princess Bride by Inigo Montoya: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

Apparently, they no longer use the number of page hits as a measure of success. Oh no. Stuff “no longer subscribe(s) to the antiquated global measurement which pitches us against other New Zealand sites.” The cynic in me wonders if that’s because the “antiquated global measurement” might show they are steadily losing ground? Just wondering …

Anyway, Stuff now loftily “looks to public trust as our north star. Such a change brings its own challenges, not least how to actually measure it.” They assure us that “trust has always been vital and important. Now, it has to become the paramount lens through which we consider the commissioning and creation of our content. If we don’t have public trust in what we produce, we have nothing.”

Well, at least they got it bang-on with the last sentence.

And finally:

Stuff’s newsroom shares these lofty goals, and accepts the challenge. We once had a reputation for clickbait – perception rather than reality, perhaps – but the ongoing attention to unique trusted journalism, diversity and transparency is being recognised and valued.

And to show us they’re serious about this whole “you-can-trust-us” thing, they have published their “Editorial Code of Practice and Ethics”. I warn you now, do NOT read this with a mouth of coffee – I will not be held responsible for ruined keyboards.

I noticed two interesting parts in their code.

Firstly, under the heading of “Bias” they claim that “Stuff is politically non-partisan. Journalists should take care not to allow bias – or the perception of bias – in their reporting and in public comments, including on social media.”

All I can say is, that’ll be the day …

And secondly, Te reo Maori. Describing it as “an official language of Aotearoa New Zealand, is a taonga with endangered status” they go on to say that “Stuff has a role to play in the normalisation and revitalisation of the language. We actively encourage the use of te reo Maori in content. That extends to frequently using te reo Maori names for our brands and mastheads, including Puna for Stuff. Words that are in common usage will not be translated into English.”
(Emphasis added)

So, everyone who is paranoid that the media are moving to increase the use of Maori and essentially make it mandatory to learn some degree of Maori, whether you want to or not … turns out you’re not being paranoid after all. If you want to read stories regularly on Stuff, the above states quite clearly that you will have to learn Maori words to understand those stories.

And the icing on the cake? At the bottom of this page is the standard begging letter. “Please support our vital role in society.”

Yeah, don’t hold your breath guys …

    If I am reading an article and I find that I can’t understand it because of the use of Maori words which I don’t understand, then I will find the information I require elsewhere.
    
    And if this happens more and more at certain websites (as seems likely to happen with Stuff), then I’ll visit them less and less. Because I don’t have limitless time to go searching out what a particular word means, then going back to the article again, reading on until I reach another word which I don’t understand, meaning that I have to look up that word again, then back to the article again until I reach yet another word I don’t understand, meaning I have to look it up … ad infinitum.
    
    So it’s just as well Stuff aren’t going to measure their success by the number of page hits, because I suspect they will be getting less and less.

    Bought for $1, it has few physical assets (no printing plants, no buildings). You can’t get a helluva lot of working capital from the bank with newspapers’ famous illusory asset of “masthead value”.
    
    If newspapers survive in New Zealand they will be small, regional publications filling a gap for local news and opinions. The content will be closer to the views of most readers than our present mainstream media are.
    
    Maori language is up against English, the dominant world language in entertainment, culture, business, academia, travel, diplomacy.
    
    When you depend on donations from the public, how stupid to force a second, struggling regional language down donors’ throats.
    
    If Stuff were sincere and rational it would print and publish in parallel in both Maori and English. Donors could select which language they subscribed to.
