So, NZ First is going to introduce a Bill dealing with coward punches. That’s great.

But it does cause one to wonder why they voted Matt King’s Coward Punch Causing Death Bill down on 4 June 2020 at the bill’s third reading. Had NZF voted in favour of the bill, or even abstained, King’s bill would now be law.

You don’t suppose it was a stunt to try and deprive Shane Jones’ opponent in the Northland electorate a bit of glory? Surely NZF would be above hypocritical, cynical, venal stuff like that. Or maybe not…

    NZF don’t appear to have a purpose and just bumble around throwing out money like lollies at a kids picnic in the expectation that this will make them look powerful and relevant – money for votes.
    But are they as dangerous as the Greens?
    At least with NZF (I’m not voting for them) their confused agendas are shouted out for all to see.
    They are not as dishonest and subversive as the Green Party, for whom the principles of conservation and enhancement of the environment are but a distant memory.

      Yes Gravelroad you make a very good point about the Greens…. but even worse than the Greens are the Maori Party. Did you hear that … [del. mod.] Tamihere on the multiparty debate the other night? What an asshole.
      
      I don’t know if it’s just a sign of my age and I’m getting grumpy-old-man syndrome… but it really seems that the social, economic and structural cohesion of New Zealand is coming undone so fast that it’s difficult to keep up with.
      
      If we kiwis don’t come to our senses PDQ we will lose our country to the forces of Marxism, Racism and lunatic Environmentalism.
      
      Ayoteeahrower will be a failed third world state cannibalising the remnants of the kiwis way of life, progress, democracy and success.

        More accurately, my children are part of the problem in that they are in varying degrees greenie anti-capitalists who sprinkle their sentences with Maori words and view the world through a TDS filter.

        I watched the minor leader’s “debate” and my view is that Tamihere is a racist. I don’t know why we are all so collectively afraid of calling out ANY behaviour or views that is designed to give advantage of ANY New Zealander over another BASED ON RACE.
        
        As for the others? Frightening in the most part. Particularly afraid of Shaw’s “nice”, clean-cut demeanour appearing to be reasonable while the Greens tuck away the much more rabid face of their co-leader.
        
        But time we all called out endemic racism in New Zealand.

  Can I just say that I think Mike is okay as a commenter and I’m a bit disappointed by the way he’s automatically downticked for whatever he says. Often (although not this time) he is insulted and vilified for his viewpoint and I think we should be better people than this.
  
  I often disagree with him (almost always actually), but at least he normally presents his arguments well and he doesn’t enter into invective and personal abuse.
  
  Most days Mikey comes up with his Happy x Day and gets a swarm of downticks. Why?

Well isn’t it great that our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gives Judith Collins a message about disrespect on her apparent snub on a Cafe in Mosgiel

and its cheese rolls. This from a Prime Minister that thinks it is ok to break the law and also promise Sex Assult Victims working in Parliament that she would get Justice for one that was assaulted by a deviate working out of her Prime Minister’s Office, only to throw her and others under the bus to rid herself and the Labour Party of the accusations.

    Get with the programme.
    Most food can now be developed in a test tube and manufactured in an industrial factory. And just about everyone knows that food comes from the supermarket anyway.
    Land and trees, snails and plants are most important.
    People and production – not so much.
    Consult with the Green Party – they will put you onto the correct path. Just don’t stand on anything while you are walking and make sure your boots are not made of real leather. Synthetic OK.

    Because her unrelenting followers are caught in the seductive illusion that she really is kind and caring and the best person in the world.
    
    But perhaps she was never really in the top contenders, becasue the Nobel committee saw through her falseness, including the false headscarf charade:
    
    She rejected the Mormon faith because it conflicted with at least two of her core motivations – being told how to live and what to do, and lack of acceptance of LGBTQI tendencies.
    
    Yet there she was opening over the top supporting the Muslin faith, which at its core, is even more entrenched and harsh in its viewpoint towards non believers and LGBTQI than Mormonism.
    
    As with many political maniacs, her political “career” it is all about strategy, not beliefs. One rule for her and one rule for others.

      It’s a cycle with the starving nations that will never be fixed. Political instability, religion, droughts, culture, no family planning education and lack of education will never stop the famine. African countries have a higher birth rate than any other country. When western countries prop them up with aide they just breed more.

        They produce kids to look after them in their old age!
        They have more than one to offset premature deaths.
        
        Sounds harsh. But have just returned from a 3rd world country.

        In my grandparents’ time people regularly starved in Europe…
        In my Parents’ time… China and India were the basket-case countries
        
        There’s more than enough food being produced in the World each year to support the World’s population.
        
        The problem is whether it is in the interest of powerful people/countries to reorganise the structures that prevent fellow humans from having an adequate, nutritious diet.

    Just as an unproven charge against a party (think NZF Foundation) will get them less votes, just news of her nomination will push her closer to sainthood in the eyes of some and get her more.
    
    If the press had the slightest understanding of the concept of being fair and balanced instead of always acting in their own commercial self interest then they would have embargoed news of her nomination until after the election.
    
    But no. $50M buys a lot of support and loyalty.

  Yes good news indeed Captain and it is as I wrote yesterday, this year’s competition for the Nobel Peace Prize had the familiar feel of last year’s competition, and that I expected the outcome to be the same.
  
  That is Greta and Jacinda were nominations, that the woke had made them hot favourites, despite there being more obvious potential winners who nobody was talking about.
  
  So, when the result is announced, the woke are left as stunned mullets because neither Greta and Jacinda won.
  
  And, what happened last night…..well blow me over and call me surprised, Jacinda and Greta didn’t win it….instead it was the UN World Food Programme….

  Only significant persons can nominate someone. I’m only guessing, but this has Helen Clark’s fingerprints all over it. We’ll apparently have to wait 50 years to find out.
  Remember Clark went to The Atlantic for an interview, claimed Ardern was one worlds most effective leaders, and we get the headline that the Atlantic thinks the NZ has one of the most effective leaders in the world.
  This is Ardern’s second nomination, presumably for the same thing (CHCH). It could only be political. If she didn’t win it the first time it was unlikely she was getting it this time.
  But it didn’t stop the headlines, including from this blog.
  Credit where it’s due. They are politically ruthless.

    Actually, any sitting MP could nominate her, except Ardern herself. A person qualified to nominate someone includes
    
    Members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers) of sovereign states as well as current heads of states
    
    So any Labour MP could have done it – simply by filling in an online form. on the Norwegian Nobel Committee Website

  She was never going to win. Just like Clark was never going to become Secretary General. Putting aside the media’s sycophancy, some people need to accept that their view of New Zealand’s importance in the world is grossly exaggerated. No one gives us a shit about what we do or what we say. We will not solve climate change, the Palestinian question or nuclear proliferation. We need to stop focusing so much on the rest of the world and start dealing with the big issues at home first: raising productivity and growing income to help pay for education, health and infrastructure.

Any observer from an organization such as the UN, the Commonwealth or the OSCE tasked with monitoring the New Zealand election would be forced to conclude that it was not “free and fair”.     An international election observer would also include a paragraph in their report on the fact that the leader of the ruling Party put Auckland into lockdown the day before the official Opposition Party was due to launch its campaign and only lifted it after the Opposition Party had been forced to resort to a virtual launch. This paragraph would be highlighted in red.
    
    An injunction should now be sought to stop the election and reschedule it for a time when adequate arrangements can be made by electoral officials and when all political parties can freely campaign. Failing that, a case should now be prepared for the High Court to set aside the results from the current illegitimate process as invalid.

NZ Election 2020: Judith Collins thinks $100m marae PGF spend-up so close to election ‘verges on corruption’

ACT leader David Seymour came out swinging earlier this week when he found out about the funding being announced so close to the election.
“Less than two weeks out from the election, NZ First and Labour are using a slush fund of taxpayers’ money to try to buy votes,” he said on Wednesday.
“Shane Jones is going to announce $100 million of spending, which will include funding for the electorate that he’s standing in. While Mr Jones might think it will buy him votes, New Zealanders can see right through it.”

NZ First leader Winston Peters said Collins needs to “catch-up” on the fact that the $100 million was part of $600 million announced as part of a PGF package back in June to support regional economies recover from COVID-19.

“This was announced in May… and she never said a thing. How convenient is this?” Peters said on Friday, when asked to respond to Collins’ criticism. “We’re not going to bow down to that.”
Ardern also said it was reallocated money made available “some time ago” as part of the COVID-19 recovery. [1]

One assumes Winston refers to the announcement 24 May, PGF reset helps regional economies.
Shane Jones today announced the first tranche of new projects to be funded, including up to $100m for waterway fencing, riparian planting and stock water reticulation, $60m for road and rail investments and up to $70m for upgrades of marae, town halls, Pasifika churches and war memorials [2]

Why is Jones to re-announce the allocation again “two weeks from the Election”
Why is the amount now $100 million, when the May announcement Winston refers to was $70 million?

If Collins says such an announcement is “verging on corruption”, if the actual statement was back when Winston claims, is the current attention not simply “coercion”?

There must be many people out there doing it hard, some lost family members to suicide, some not able to even get a job seeker bene having lost their job / business, employees recently and wondering why they haven’t been helped?. What huge waste of money where Maori have had so much already paid out in settlements,and more than enough people out of work in their tribes that should be doing that building maintenance anyway. This is a deeply depressing read. He says the law leads to “absurd results”. How about some examples of these absurd results?

I recall while back DPF ran a series on 3 strike criminals. Results looked fantastic not “absurd”. All the featured offenders were frightening.

Makes me angry really. Folk laugh here that Twyford can’t get things done. That is actually very fortunate. But Little (Justice) and Parker (farmers) can get things done and they are all terrible.

I was disappointed when I saw that the final Leaders Debate next week was to be “controlled” by Jessica Mutch.
After her performance last week I am sure that she will be the winner anyhow, as she does not know how to control the proceedings – only her own voice and views.
Her obvious bias is only that behind Tova O’Brien and Katie Bradford.
I hate to think what will happen when Cindy gets the Queens Crown on Saturday week. These and the other affiliated women in the media will be beside themselves – they have worked hard for the last couple of years behaving abominably in some hidden cases yet to emerge, or not.

Donald Trump seals his fate

Any sliver of hope to avoid a Republican wipeout slipped away from President Trump on Thursday morning thanks to his refusal to attend the next presidential debate in a virtual format (necessitated by his covid-19 diagnosis), his hysterical demand that Hillary Clinton be indicted and his decision to throw insults at Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala D. Harris (he called her a “monster,” “totally unlikable” and a “communist”). It is noteworthy that one of Trump’s objections to a virtual debate is that the moderator can cut you off. In other words, deprived of the chance to bully and interrupt, Trump is pitifully weak.

Trump’s latest crazy-talk should suffice to convince all but his sycophantic enablers that he is entirely unable to perform the duties of his office. The difference between the two campaigns — one calm and winning, the other unhinged and losing — is evident. The Post reports:

“I’m not going to waste my time on a virtual debate. That’s not what debating is all about,” [Trump] said in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on the Fox Business Network.

Shortly afterward, Biden spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield said Biden welcomes the chance to participate in a virtual debate.

“Vice President Biden looks forward to speaking directly to the American people and comparing his plan for bringing the country together and building back better with Donald Trump’s failed leadership on the coronavirus that has thrown the strong economy he inherited into the worst downturn since the Great Depression,” she said in a statement.

Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien blasted the commission’s decision in a statement, saying Trump would “do a rally instead” of accepting what he characterized as a “pathetic” decision.

Stepien has tested positive for the coronavirus, so perhaps he is a poor spokesman forfor the position that the campaign intends to disregard health guidelines and put even more Americans at risk.

Is a Capital Gains Tax/Inheritance Tax really needed.
Much of the research of people who inherit sums of money show, that most have nothing to show for it within a relatively short time.
If it is captured by a Capital Gains Tax there is probably nothing to show for it after one year. Maybe some residual GST.
They will also spend at least some of it in areas not likely receive money from Government.
A more even spread across commerce?

  I think the issue with CGT is this: We tax businesses. It’s a thing, we do it, that’s the way the world is.
  We DON’T tax capital gains on houses.
  So like… If you have money where are you going to put it?
  
  If the government wants people to invest in business that actually *do* things rather than properties that just sit there, the CGT seems like a good idea. It’s about saying “We want investors to invest in business that create jobs and create wealth, not just in selling houses”
  
  Hell, if a CGT is working properly, it wouldn’t even end up taking much money- you’d use it to stabilize the property market, and then once the market was stabilized, it wouldn’t be worth anything because house prices wouldn’t be going up.
  
  Heck, you could even make CGT tax neutral by implementing a CGT and then making a proportional drop somewhere else in your tax system. It doesn’t have to be an extra revenue stream, just trying to rebalance investment that currently leans towards property more than it should due to anomalies already created BY THE TAX SYSTEM.

      I still think that if you have a market that is not going in the direction you want, redistributing *where* you place your taxes (without net increase) can be a way of redirecting it, from say, investment in home ownership to investment in business… this sounds like a good thing? Even if we only usually tax income, and not capital gains?
      
      But I’m also by no means an economist, nor an accountant, and do not claim any such expertise. If people disagree, or if I’m just plain wrong, that’s cool to.

  Capital gains taxes are never justified–they are inevitably envy based. Their proper economic use is very rare.
  House prices here cannot be affected by them as they are driven by money supply expansion which is mostly from outside NZ. A tax in such a situation is is not a tax on wealth but apparent wealth.

  Unfortunately you’re not taking all the variables into consideration; the economic destruction caused by COVID-19 in 2020 will cause many more lives to be lost. They just won’t all die in 2020. It’ll come from those who eventually commit suicide having lost their income, businesses, life savings, and homes. It’ll come from the lower life expectancy of those forced to live in poverty where they can’t afford quality food, heating, or medical treatment. It’ll come from those who couldn’t be diagnosed and treated in a timely manner due to limited hospital resources and lockdowns.
  
  The irony is that if people would stop behaving like neanderthaals and follow just a handful of infection control steps the damn virus would be dead in the water world-wide in about a month – and yet each and every day we’re seeing evidence of 250,000 to 300,000 unnecessary infection control failures.
  
  People don’t need to be “afraid” of it and they don’t need to let it “dominate their lives” – they just need to stop behaving like idiots for a month and knock it on the head. It’s been an eye-opener to observe that when stupid and irrational people are put in to life-altering situation that require the most rational and pragmatic decisions … they continue to make stupid and irrational decisions. The headline shouldn’t have been woman caught escaping from isolation premises.
It should have been “If woman hadn’t been caught the authorities wouldn’t even have known she had done so previously.”
There would have been no searching of surveillance cameras. No knowledge of possible contacts. No details of further weaknesses in the isolation control.
Possibly another unknown positive in the community.

People just don’t realize the significance of this election in America. If the Democrats win, they will gut the Constitution to the point that the GOP may never win another election. The Dems want to pack the Supreme Court with their own nominees. When questioned, neither Joe Biden nor Kamila Harris will answer (you’ll find out after the election, says Joe).

They would expand the number of judges on that court to favour themselves. They would also ditch the filibuster, giving them carte blanche to push through whatever they want.

They would also get rid of the Electoral College which would favour big liberal cities in elections.

In short, the fix is in. And they intend to change constitutional laws to suit themselves. Nancy Pelosi did it with the impeachment when she took it upon herself unilaterally to start the impeachment process when it was supposed to be voted on and instigated by the House – ALL of the House, not just Nancy and the Democrats without taking a vote. No Republicans supported it.

Totally lawless.

Hey, so not really related to anything (this is the general debate after all)…
Was recently reading Stuff article about cost of election: ( https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/123026286/election-2020-this-could-be-our-most-expensive-general-election-as-costs-approach-100m )
And something that stuck out was that the election cost $100mil, (usually closer to $50mil, but covid etc.), while political campaigns cost $3-4 mill for big parties and one mill for little ones. About $10mil total. Do these numbers seem right?

There’s been a lot of talk about sketchy sources of party funding over the past few years… would we be better off just giving parties their campaign budgets, and avoiding all that altogether?

It comes to about a dollar per year per person, which seems like a damn good deal, and afterwards we would (hopefully) be able to turn around and say “All political donations are illegal” and avoid all these weird donation scandles.

What do people see as the advantages? What do people see as the disadvantages? HOW would the Electoral office decide how to allocate this money? It’d need to be a super transparent process, and also one that allowed both new parties to enter and more serious parties to campaign.

  One of the reasons for the cost blowout this year is the number of advance voting places, and the duration they are open and staffed. The wages bill alone must be horrific, let alone rentals for two weeks.
  
  From memory, last election there was one advance voting place in Whanganui, then the customary number of polling places on Election Day. This year there are 17 polling places open seven days a week for two weeks, along with an additional 13 booths open on 17th October only. Each of those places has multiple staff, all of whom have to be paid.
  
  But hey, the Labour government’s attitude to money is such that what the heck? If the money runs out, they’ll just print more!

Press says Chch is going to spend almost $200M on refreshing the museum.

Wow.

Of course these budgets always blow out fantastically. That $200M will become $500M.

With about 160k ratepayers in Chch that’s about $3k each – for just this one vanity project. There are of course many such projects going on.

Is this REALLY the best thing to be doing in a time of financial hardship?

        Well, my two sons and daughter all vote blue. In fact my second son is a close friend of Simon Bridges, and being a builder, does all Simon’s maintenance – mainly when Natalie asks for it. 😉
        And this year, 3 of my grandchildren are voting – the oldest who lives in Wellington has caught the socialist contagian and votes Green (or she did last election, despite assuring my son & me that she was voting blue – peer pressure – don’t know this year). My other 2 that are voting are solid blue. Next lection, the 4 remaining grandies will be voting, and they are blue (indoctrinated 😉 )

Hubby said he had.
She then asked if he would mind telling who he had voted for…
Which he honestly did…. (i.e. Not Kiri Allan).

I told him he needn’t expect a call-up to some Government advisory committee now.

In the decade or so we’ve been going to Tindalls, never once have I ever seen a shark in the bay, let alone heard of anybody being taken by one. Yet here we go again in WA……., another surfer killed off Esperance.
No wonder whenever my partner catches one off his boat he always fins the nasty things and watches them sink.

  Freaking out about sharks is what stupid people do.
  
  In South Africa, it is still common for tens of thousands of people to flock to the beaches from Johannesburg etc every Christmas.
  Typically a hundred of them die on the roads to get there.
  They all have a wonderful time until the first shark attack, then they flee the coastal towns in a mad lemming run home and another hundred more die.
  
  But somehow “shark attack” is more frightening for people who do not even go into the water than hundreds of people dying on the roads.

Nice to see a nice Maori lady as deputy children’s commissioner.
Like the way she brought attention to the fact so many Maori kids suffer loneliness and disconnection from their families.
Let’s hope the 100 million being given to do up maraes up and down the nation will be spent on training young Maori and helping heal some of that loneliness and disconnection.

In other words: the selectors realized that they had put BB in the wrong position, and rather than move him to the bench and move the real fullback ( Jordie Barrett ) from wing to his natural position they found a late injury.

  No, it’s merely a continuation of the AB policy to run two playmakers, one from flyhalf and the other from fullback.
  
  The takeaway is the selectors see Jordie as a traditional fullback/wing and at a pinch inside-centre, but not a flyhalf.
  
  And I’m not an advocate of the dual-playmaker strategy, I like my fullbacks to be fullbacks. I’m also not in love with McKenzie at 15: brave lad, sparkling talent but (a) he’s a bit too helter-skelter in open play and (a very big B) I’m sick of seeing him get ragdolled when he’s the last line of defence. (Not his fault, purely stature.)

    I don’t understand this. If you are called by a polling company you’d either say who you were voting for, or you’d decline to say (be undecided). Why on earth would you deliberately say you’d vote for the other side?
    
    To claim this effect happens en masse is delusional.

      The other scenario is that some of these polling companies exclude undecideds. This would cause problems if all or nearly all undecideds voted conservative.
      
      Still doesn’t answer the question about why they are shy. Why are they shy? Are they conflicted?
