Honestly we are in a mad house. One case of the virus and 100,000 Aucklanders are “asked” to stay home from work today.

We are still pursuing elimination. One case and Auckland gets shut down. Does anyone else think that’s insane?

Does anyone in our government have any sense of proportion? Are you going to lock your citizens down every time someone sneezes?

And what does it mean to “ask” all the CBD workers to stay home? Is that a legally enforceable order? Or just a polite suggestion? Out of that abundance of caution. Some would say massive overreaction.

And finally to the people of NZ. You voted for this. Do you regret it yet?

Because this is what is going to happen for months and months. A continual rolling maul of shutdowns and lock downs because of our elites who are happy to control you.

Has anyone got any courage to face this situation and have any sense of proportion? Surely we are better than this?

    This virus will go the way of the common cold -1,000s of mutations each getting progressively weaker as the virus strives to reproduce and not kill its host. FFS it is now transmitted through minks. What are we going to do when it starts transmitting through cats and dogs more readily – kill those too?

      Understand that if you are vulnerable your health is your responsibility. Act accordingly, but don’t expect the rest of the country to shut down. The impact in terms of jobs, stress etc is simply too high. More quality adjusted life years will be lost through these childish attempts to win the World Champs of Virtue than by being sensible.

        eg one might wonder about measures like “oldie-only” shopping sessions at the supermarket etc.

        And how is all that different to the lock-downs you seem to be advocating for all Ian? The virus is a threat to a minority – those who are elderly or who have other morbidities. It is not a major hazard to the majority of the population. If you are unfortunate enough to be in the vulnerable group you need to accept that and take precautions.         Joking aside, roughly there are 60,000 influenza-related deaths each year in the USA. Currently, there are 240,000+ Covid-related deaths, probably looking at a 275,000 to 300,000 for 12 months ending in March 2021.

  I think that the government needs to keep the population under threat of further lockdown until the ‘vaccine’ arrives. There will be immense pressure on everyone they deem at risk to be vaccinated so that Mr and Mrs Gates are kept on side.
  If the spread of the virus is contained, think of International Kudos that will be heaped on the PM! Think of the favourable publicity for the Gates Image and Empire.

  Government will crow about how pleased they were that so many people took their advice and stayed home.

  The elimination strategy has the support of the vast majority of New Zealanders. It is here to stay and few care what your view is. Obviously the case in Auckland is a problem and it is better to put the effort in against it now than after it has spread. As stated the “work from home” was a request not a legally enforceable law. At 600 a day 1/3 of all deaths in the U.K are covid. Some of us know how lucky we are in this country and some don’t.

Is fast food cheaper than shopping and actual cooking? Well, maybe if it’s out of season courgettes, probably not a priority for many households struggling to pay the rent.

At least Alf Filipaina, Auckland councillor for Manukau, in his very strange quote below mentions ‘other issues’ though whether that refers to rents rising or fast food consumption is not clear –

“We’ll end up looking at families choosing between food on the table and paying their rent. And I know at the moment they would end up paying their rent, and looking at fast food because it’s cheap, and then we get into other issues.”

  I know I personally could cook three meals at home for the price of a takeaway meal. I get so annoyed constantly hearing this nonsense that fast food is the go to for poor families as it’s cheaper than making stuff themselves. Perhaps we need to insist beneficiaries must attend some budgeting and/or cooking courses.

      An Indian curry with naan bread and a fizzy drink is now $17. I can make very big pot of curry with a tray of chicken breasts, tin tomatos,chick peas, lentils, spuds,onions,spices and coconut cream rice. All for about $$13. It lasts 3 nights for 4 people.

      A restricted card is already in place in the Young Parent Payment programme. Introduced by National under social investment, the programme supports teen parents in a number of ways, including extra payments for undertaking specified responsibilities such as enrolling their child in ECE and GP, attending budgeting and parenting classes.
      
      It would be easy enough, though expensive, to extend the scheme to include households that would benefit.

    Agreed. Takeaway night costs about $60 for a family of 4 including two hungry teenage boys in our house. I can make 3 dinners including curry and casseroles that can last 2 nights each meal for that money.

      I agree, although you’re not accounting for milk, which is very expensive. My budget hack is to use the powdered stuff. I use it in porridge, and I can’t tell the difference over normal milk, and it’s a fraction of the price and lasts ages in the cupboard.

    But once upon a time when people got married they received gifts which contributed to the establishment of their household.
    They would be given everything from dinner services, to pots and pans, and salt and pepper shakers. They would get table cloths and clothes pegs, and sets of cutlery and useful kitchen appliances – as well as bed linen, and a clock for the mantelpiece.
    In short, they would likely have almost everything needed to start married life.
    How many people get married now?
    Who cares if they have a pot to boil the spuds in?
    Anyway, we have fast food outlets so who needs to cook?

      Once upon a time those things you refer to cost quite a lot, back when we didn’t have Kmart and Warehouse etc. These people could also check out a garage sale or similar and find the necessary items very cheaply. My suggested budget/cooking courses could make these suggestions to their participants!
      And who needs to cook? Families with limited income certainly do!

  I think he is saying once they start eating fast food regularly the other problems begin…. Obesity, teeth decay, family disengagement, loss of skills, disease etc.

    “Healthful” foods are way cheaper to buy and cook than fast food. But you can’t rock into the supermarket and buy winter tomatoes or offshore plums just because you’d like them. You need to wait till peak season to do that. It’s not hard.
    A small amount of meat and basic in-season vegetables works just fine.
    
    MSD even has (or had?) a free downloadable cookbook that had good recipes in it, but interest is about zero.

So a Trump support group is offering a $25,000 bounty for those reporting instances of electoral fraud.
Reminds me of years ago when NZ Government offered a bounty for each rat caught. Kids bred rats to collect the bounties. So creative people will ‘breed’ instances of electoral fraud to collect the $25,000.

  An awful lot of lawyers handling Trump electoral fraud claims are looking plain stupid as judges question and rip into them as they try and promote Trump’s stupid claims. They are being reduced to waffling.

    Yes. If you review the Trump court cases so far they have been pitiful. The Pennsylvania case claimed Republican observers weren’t allowed in. What they failed to say is that the room was at maximum capacity for covid and that Republican observers were already in the room at roughly equal or more numbers than Democrat observers. When the judge asked if there were republicans already in the room, Trumps lawyer replied that there were “non-zero persons in the room”
    Which is lawyer BS if I ever heard it.
    So the judge says “what are we here for then?”

He was obviously not referring to instances where a party wanted ridiculously large numbers of scrutineers present. And it seems an electoral ploy is to try and stack a counting centre with so many scrutineers that counting becomes almost impossible.

      Who of us were there? There is a great fuss about disputed facts to which we are not privy. I am happy to observe the operation of law but keep away from taking sides. We should know the outcome by the middle of December.
      We are powerless to influence the outcome and have to live with whatever comes.

I queried this and apparently they are “always looking out for the security of people on Facebook” WTF?

And yes, I’m being serious; there appear to be many who need “a checkup from the neck up” about what they consider to be credible information sources. And what you experienced was the real-world consequence of that.
  
  Permanent ban seems harsh; but on the bright side they probably did you a favour. I gave up on FB months ago; too many people hell-bent on documentary their stupidity. I haven’t regretted it (or missed it) for a moment.

    But will that ever happen? … not a chance – but equally, it won’t change reality either. What is the reality? Let me spell it out to you:
    
    1. Trump is a toxic pig of a human being whilst Biden is a decent human being.
    
    2. The above shouldn’t be construed to imply that I’m saying that none of his policies were any good or that Biden will be any better.
    
    3. Being a toxic pig with little credibility was always going to be a turn-off to many voters; the irony is that he could have enacted the same policy using rational explanation and demonstrating competence and he’d probably have won the election – but that just wouldn’t have been in alignment with Brand Trump.
    
    4. The elections were free and fair – despite what many here appear to believe. To date 30 court cases have not resulted in so much as a single vote being overturned in their favour – and qualified legal professionals have stated that they expect the existing results to stand.
    
    The bottom line is Trump lost. It was close, but he lost – and WILL be out of the Whitehouse come 20 Jan 2020 no matter how many links people here post to uncredible material.
    
    Righto – now that you’ve had reality spelled out … start with the down-ticks.

      Biden IS NOT a decent human being. That simply isn’t true.
      I do agree that Trump is a toxic pig, I just think that they’re both full of unlikeable issues and disagree that Trump’s inability to lie as well as Biden makes him a worse person.
      So it comes down to policy and not how that policy is delivered.
      I also believe people should make their own decisions and take responsibility for them so blaming Trump for people’s decisions is entirely unreasonable (even when Trump is being a moron).

    Here’s some context to that event;
    
    “Project Veritas, a right-wing activist organization known for using deceptions, released a video where a Pennsylvania postal worker claimed that postal workers were instructed to backdate ballots found on November 4 as being postmarked by November 3.
    
    The claim was “moot”, described FactCheck.Org, because Michigan does not count ballots received after 8 p.m. on November 3, regardless of which date the ballots were postmarked.
    
    On November 10, Democrats on the United States House Committee on Oversight and Reform stated that the postal worker “completely recanted” the claims. The Washington Post, citing three anonymous sources, reported on November 11 that the postal worker, Richard Hopkins, had acknowledged to investigators that the allegations were not true. Hopkins publicly denied that he had recanted his allegations.
    
    Also on November 11, Project Veritas released a two-hour audio recording purportedly of the conversation between Hopkins and the investigators. The Washington Post described it as “not clear” if Project Veritas had edited the audio recording before release. In the recording, Hopkins is heard saying that Project Veritas wrote his affidavit for him.
    
    Additionally, Hopkins recounted that when he was interacting with Project Veritas, he was in “so much shock [he] wasn’t paying that much attention to what they were telling me”.
    
    Hopkins says in the audio that he heard parts of a conversation, with the specific phrases he heard being “ballots on the 4th”, “all for the 3rd”, and “one postmarked on the 4th”. Hopkins acknowledged in the audio that he had not heard the word “backdate”

While the rest of Europe, and parts of the Americas,
see death rates spiking the rise in Sweden seems controlled.
No doubt they have managed to ensure the bulk of the at risk part of the population is isolated.

  I suspect that “isolating the at-risk portion of society” is unachievable; there are just too many potential failure points; especially around aged care facilities.
  
  Human complacency means that the ball eventually gets dropped by someone somewhere – at which point it all comes tumbling down like a house of cards.
  
  For evidence of that we need only think of what happened at Rosewood rest home – and that was in a country that’s geographically dispersed with a very low population density.

  Woods’ office’s point is a fair one – both the costs and benefits should be assessed over the whole lifetime of the project.
  
  What they continue to miss, however, is the opportunity cost – the fact that the same money, more intelligently deployed, could have bought vastly more emissions reduction. Alternatively, the same amount of emissions reduction could have been achieved at vastly less cost elsewhere.
  
  That is the point of emissions trading. Through good old-fashioned market mechanisms it directs money and resource to wherever they will buy the most bang per buck.
  
  Dear God, there must be somebody in the Ministry for the Environment, or the Treasury, or MBIE, who understands this?

  Jacinda’s window dressing comments about housing are quite ironic, considering she lives in MT Eden, earns 500k a year + perks for herself and family. She most likely has a cleaner coming in and someone to do her shopping for her or one of those flash meal boxes delivered.     Got some $$$ to invest. Saw a block of three fairly solid flats here in PN offering a bit over 6% gross yield. Asking price of $700k looked doable, so I called the agent.
    
    “We currently have 16 offers on this property. If you really want it, an offer in the low-to-middle 8’s will have you in the hunt. RV is $430k”

With wild borrowing to be nice to everyone during the election that bribe money will find its way into asset prices. More is to come as other are printing money for COVID comforts and that sloshes around here as well.
  That’s why we previously had Ministers of Finance not Poohbah of Thorndon who new that money does not grow on trees as in the ’57 Extrav.

    SF, happened to call into a Carterton cafe on my travels and observed how many mobile QIs were using the app. Well dressed visitors made a display of pointing their phone and snapping and had that benign ‘I conformed’ look on their faces. Proof people in the system (even if they were not initially involved) are not prepared to be honest in how they perform their duties.

I am referring to the presentation of “new” accusations by the Crown Prosecutor against Peter Ellis, in the case to appeal his convictions.

I kid you not.

On Wednesday, the Crown saw it, as its duty to present new accusations against Peter Ellis. This latest accusation arise from a complaint made by a woman going into a police station in 1993/94 (after the investigation in Peter Ellis was already underway), and accusing him of a similar offence 10 years earlier at a different creche. This accusation was never investigated or put to Ellis to respond to. But after 27 years of investigations and court hearings at various levels, we now witness the Crown say, “ahhh but as proof of Ellis’ track record we know have this instance from 1981 that we know about…”

Even though I am not a criminal trial lawyer, I know that the presenting of such evidence is so far outside the bounds of what is permissible, as to be inadmissible in any NZ/British jurisdiction style court. So, why did the Crown even do it?

It took Justice Winklemann to remind the Crown Solicitor that the presentation of any such evidence was inadmissible and the Court would not consider it.

But you are left wondering, what goes through the minds of solicitors to believe that they must do their utmost to ensure convictions are maintained, even to the extent to try and damage a person’s reputation further by presenting untested, uninvestigated, uncorroberated, evidence that a dead person has never been asked to respond to all in an effort to support unsound convictions that they were possibly never a part of in the first place?

I shake my head in disbelief if people believe that this is justice at work.

I remember when

Gordon Campbell states “Covid-19 has posed an apolitical threat to the public and National’s ham-fisted attempts at politicising the handling of the pandemic was punished harshly by voters.”
Great to get an honest, unbiased opinion.
However, perhaps he does identify the problem for National, Boris and Don T.
The right wing Governments wanted to treat covid as a health and economic problem.
Their problem is that health is not considered one of the strengths of right-wing parties. Labour make health one of their major policy platforms and this gives them an advantage when persuading the electorate they have their safety in mind.
On the other hand, National and the right, are considered focused on money. It is easy to make this seem heartless and uncaring, only interested helping the rich. Money only matters when you don’t have any and when you don’t think you have enough economic policy is not a priority.

Yes, from the world of science we get reports that it is already too late, and the world should have been cutting carbon emissions 50 years ago.

“We must decarbonise transport immediately,”

that somehow we’ll have enough “green” electricity to power 4.5mill vehicles, and we’ll ignore that there is more carbon released into the atmosphere by an electric vehicle over its life than an internal combustion engine vehicle over its life.

Then he said
“We must get rid of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers and industrial agriculture…..”

For what it is worth, the only way to reduce global carbon emissions, is to de-populate the world (Logan’s Run anybody?) and that is not on the agenda…..

Oh dear, where has this man been…..?

      Yes. This relates to votes that have not been counted yet. The 10,000 votes relates to the seperate case which is before the Supreme Court.
      Which I don’t think the court will even look at because the reason they my rejected looking at it was that they will look at it if it will fundamentally change the result of the election.
      Which it won’t. Because it only affects 10,000 votes some of which will be Republicans and Biden leads by 50,000 and because Biden will win even if he lost Pennsylvania because he has several other states.

Julie Anne Genter has helpfully posted a graph of house prices. I say “helpfully”, because it clearly shows the greatest acceleration in house prices was between 1999 and 2008, and since 2017.

Ask yourself; who governed New Zealand during those years when house price inflation was rampant?

As I was pulling into Mitre 10 this morning, I heard the covid radio ad saying everyone should scan QR codes tracer app.

The store was busy. So I sat in my car and counted the next 50 people to enter store. Out of the 50, three scanned the QR code.

So the thing is a total failure. Yet the COVID card solution which was brilliant and promoted by Sam Morgan was abandoned (or wrecked) by the Ministry of Health.

The thing is that the government does not get is that it does not matter WHY people are not using the app. They just aren’t. And no amount of bobbling heads, waving arms, or frowny faces is going to change that.

The Herald reports the employer denied insisting the sick employee to come to work.

  I was Ch Officer in Shipping Corp and spent 6 months away, not all at sea, and at the end of that you are tired.
  
  30 days NZ to UK and passing through either of the canals I was doing the 4-8 watch and 4 hrs estra a day as well.

Having had much contact with some of the recruiters for a major fishing company I’m told that the biggest probelms are finding people who are both fit & able and who can pass a drugs test. They also need people who get along with other people. You’d think that would be easy — but no.

More on the State library’s huge book purge…

New Zealand writer Philip Temple has a letter in the Otago Daily Times today saying that non-Maori, non-Polynesan books also have a right to be protected in the National Library’s 600,000 book cull of non-New Zealand material.

The State library says it wants their storage space for more New Zealand material.

Temple reports Anahare Morehu, president of the Library and Information Associaton of New Zealand, as saying about the books being culled: “None of this stuff has anything to do with Aotearoa.”

“As a Former National Library Fellow, I find this appalling,” Temple says in his letter to the newspaper.

Temple says he respects Morehu’s concern for proper collection of Maori and Pacific kaupapa.

“But there is another kaupapa that is of equal importance to a majority of New Zealanders: that of their Pakeha ancestors, their whakapapa.

“The countless books printed over many hundreds of years are the repositories of Pakeha history, science, philosopohy, religion, politics, art and creative endeavour.”

Translation into English by online Maori Dictionary:

kaupapa Maori:Maori approach, Maori topic, Maori customary practice, Maori institution, Maori agenda, Maori principles, Maori ideology – a philosophical doctrine, incorporating the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values of Maori society.

I wonder if, in a few years time, the young student/shop assistant with covid will be bleating that she can’t afford a house. Maybe cutting back on her endless take away meals would be a good start towards saving.

According to Gateway Pundit, Trump is currently winning –

President Trump is currently winning the 2020 election with most states won and he holds the lead in the Electoral College (EC) voting.

The President now holds 232 EC votes to Biden’s 226. The President has won 25 states to Biden’s 19. There are 6 states still in question.

Pagin’ Ian Boag who 24 hours ago apparently believed the Auckland City Council could not save millions of dollars.

Ian, you’re 100% correct. They cannot save any worthwhile amount of ratepayer dollars. They can only urinate it away without any accountability.

“Auckland Council has booked $1.4 billion in balance sheet losses on interest rate derivatives in the past two years after its strategy of fixing interest costs long-term backfired when interest rates cratered.

“The pain, or rather the lack of immediate relief from the cost of borrowing, comes as local government finances come under considerable strain as the pandemic bites. This week the council forecast by 2024 there would be a $1b Covid-19-shaped hole in its budgets, and signalled years of emergency belt-tightening.

“But at the end of last month when the council’s annual report was released, notes to the accounts also flagged a $665m loss in the value of its interest rate derivatives during the year, on top of a similar $719m loss the year prior.

“An audit note provided by the Auditor-General said of the $1.4b in losses: “This is primarily the result of the Auckland Council and Group using derivates to fix the interest rates paid on borrowings at rates higher than current marker interest rates.”

“These rates are above those paid by even consumer borrowers for residential mortgages today, and are far higher than the sub-1 per cent yield the council’s bonds are attracting on the NZX secondary market.

Mayor Phil Goff declined repeated requests from the Herald this week to discuss or justify the hedging losses and whether ratepayers were locked into now-overpriced loans, with a statement from his office saying he had “nothing further to add” to statements by his council’s treasurer John Bishop.

Mayor Phil Goff meets the stars of Mary Poppins in September. He refused to comment this week on $1.4b of council losses on interest rate derivatives.
