I think I’m going to have to learn Te Reo, otherwise it won’t be long before I can’t understand the TV3 weather forecast.

    I don’t watch TV3 so haven’t had to endure the f*ckwittery they use there but I chuckle each and every time Son of Jim gives his Weather Promo during One News:
    
    ‘After the break, all you need to know about the weather at your place tomorrow.’
    
    I have yet to hear Dan C even mention my neck of the woods let alone tell me what climatic occurrences I might expect there on the morrow…
    
    Does he – or One News – seriously think there are folk out there too out of the loop to not go ‘Oooh, it was fine today. But it rained in Sydney 3 days ago. Dare I plan for some wetness or should I wait for Dan C to give me the Lesson for Today?’?
    
    [That said, clearly there are One watchers who sit through such ‘Forecast’, complaining pen in hand, ready to downtick whatever it is Hilary Barry is garbed in for the following Seven Sharp.]

  Captain, I too had wondered about the recent upsurge in te reo usage one TVNZ and likes of Magic Talk. And the initial question was how does one learn anything with the usual lack of a translation of what has just been said – but then when you do know what it was, the next question is, How often will you ever want to ordinarily say to anyone “Welcome to One Sport” or “That was your 1 News headlines”?

    I could have supported this if the point was to identify useful Maori words and expressions and use them somehow so I gradually learn what they mean. But after years of listening to RNZ I still have no idea what even the most repeated phrases there mean. It’s really just virtue-signaling.

  It’s pitifully simplistic with its 1840 base words. However the pronouns could drive you crazy–I hope no gender sensitised person gets near them.

  I live in aussie as you know and I have stopped reading stuff and the herald.
  In Israel the official languages are Hebrew and Arabic, with English being compulsory in their schools. Their newspapers reflect that.

  You know what? If there is a case to be made for learning one of the official languages of New Zealand, then it should be sign language. There are obviously more deaf people in NZ using sign language than people speaking Maori. Just look at the daily televised Covid press conferences. They always have a person up there signing for the deaf people. Are there any captions in Maori? Or verbal translations in Maori? Of course not. Because everybody can speak English in New Zealand. Which proves to me that Maori is more of a novelty language. It’s not needed for communication in the way sign language is. Which is the whole point of a language anyway. To communicate.
  
  I would support more that sign language be used occasionally on the news. At least it has a real purpose.

    Surely you are deliberately being silly to try to make a point? All that reflects is that deaf people are, in effect, monolingual (so require the extra “feed”), whereas Maori speakers are bilingual, doesn’t it?

      Right, but overseas in Japan, China, France, Germany, Italy, etc, they have people who only speak their native language (French, for example), although it is becoming increasingly common for people to have English as a second language. So there is a purpose in learning French, German, Italian etc to be able to communicate. There is no comparison to learning Maori here. It was almost a dead language before it was resurrected a few years ago for mostly cultural reasons. Its primary purpose is not for communication. You may as well learn Latin. Or speak to each other in pig-Latin for fun.
      
      There are probably more people who speak Klingon worldwide than Maori. But the purpose is similar. It’s more of a novelty. If you want to save it for cultural reasons, then fair enough. But it is pointless in making it compulsory to learn in schools or foisting it on the general population via the media when it generally has no purpose.
      
      As I said, there is a point in learning German if you have relatives in Germany or want to travel there. It is communication, to be understood. It is promoting a lie to think that NZ has a similar native language. We don’t. Just imagine if the U.S brought in compulsory teaching of Indian (Native American) language or Australia brought in teaching of the Aboriginal language. Same thing. But you don’t see them doing it, for good reason.

  I note that all media are obviously under instruction to call the country Aotearoa now. The unsaid political motivation behind it bothers me rather than the use of the name. It is evidence of State control of our media rather than various media independently deciding to drop all reference to New Zealand.

    I have it from an insider at one of our largest radio stations that there is now a requirement at TV One and RNZ that a minimum number of Maori words are spoken each hour or during the TV News. He said that Maori influence is ‘very strong’.

      I don’t doubt what you’re saying Gazza but if true, shouldn’t we as taxpayers insist that at least 80% of words spoken on Maori TV are in English. The taxpayer pays for Maori TV and at least 80% of NZers speak English.
      As a side note Gazza, I’ve never heard a Maori order a beer in Te Reo.

    Yep, State control of the media coming: TVNZ and Radio NZ likely to combine; the Government now financing rural coverage for newspapers through a scheme run through Radio NZ; NZME (the Herald, NewstalkZB etc) in a co-operation deal with State-financed Maori TV.

  A few months ago I saved an article from a local paper – it went something like this:
  
  “Te ******** ***********. claims that ******** ****** breaks ************** customs and demands **** for perceived *********** ** ******** . . . . . . . . . . .”
  It went on in 50/50 English/Maori, and by the end I was none the wiser as to the grievance, but got the message that money would be the answer.
  
  As for the weather, I find looking at the sky and feeling the sun/rain/wind is quite helpful.

  I have a cat. She goes outside first thing in the morning and periodically returns during the day. I use her to determine the weather – if she is wet, it is raining, if she is warm, it’s sunny, etc. Seems quite reliable.

  Maybe the craven grovelling was done in private was not sufficient. Lester has to publicly humiliate himself and do hard labour in the Wellington southerly and rain as atonement. In addition to providing loos and cleaning them I suppose.
  
  If this attempt at thwarting the development does not work, will it stop there, or will St. PJ turn Japanese and give Lester a knife and ask him to do the honourable thing ?

      Yes he comes across as a know it all, however he usually has data and examples to back up his position, and he isn’t intimidated by position, hence Ardern getting snarky with him again this morning when he kept asking for facts on when paid-for Pfizer vaccinations were going to arrive,and she didn’t have any.

  If Biden is sworn in then Democracy is pretty much dead in the U.S and hundreds of thousands of people have been disenfranchised. It is beyond doubt that fraud occurred on a massive scale to get Biden elected. There are thousands of affidavits from people attesting to such and it goes against every predicted statistical norm as KIA pointed out.
  
  If Biden is elected then the U.S is no longer the most free country in the world. It has become more like a banana republic, with the Democrats the monkeys in charge.

      Here’s Minister of Justice Kris Faafoi on coming controls:
      
      ”There are some clear and significant gaps in the protections against hate speech under the Human Rights Act 1993 that are out of step with thinking in society today.”
      
      Faafoi, who spent 10 years as a journalist for TVNZ and the BBC, will “in the near future” announce proposed amendments to the law. How shameful for a former journalist to be leading the charge against free speech.
      
      Interesting in the Stuff report that Maggy links to: a plug for the Utopian registered charity, JustSpeak, in which Kim Workman is the only male on the board of nine. Another board member is quoted by Stuff saying she will be watching how well the new Police Minister responds to the issue of “unconscious bias”.
      
      You have to smile at Stuff reporting a campaign against bias.
      
      “JustSpeak,” which on its web site describes itself as a registered trust, is sort of a trading name of the charity registered as the Robson Hanaan Trust, and which was first registered as the Amos Trust.

        According to a Scoop post six years ago, the Trust administers the Rethinking Crime and Punishment project, and Justspeak, the Young Peoples Voice on Justice.
        
        In the trust’s latest performance report, this is included: ” … on the campaigning front, we ran a successful campaign to restore voting rights to people in prison.”
        
        The report also includes:
        
        ” … we also began work to support young people’s participation in the conversation around the referendum to legalise cannabis, with a focus on bringing evidence around the drug law reform into young people’s conversations with family and friends….”

  To be fair, Mayor Foster did campaign on his opposition to Shelly Bay development. He is now keeping faith with his voters, on the basis Shelly Bay is a big reason they voted for him to be mayor.

Claire Szabo took over a shambles as Labour’s President, did the job behind the scenes and 12 months later was able to stand behind on the stage and reflect on a huge win on election night.
Peter Goodfellow would do well to do the same – do what he is supposedly/apparently good at, stfu and leave it to Judith alone to be the leader. David Carter might well do the same thing.

  The Board has done 80% of things right. It has been successful with membership and fundraising which are arguably its main roles. There were a few issues surrounding candidate selection, etc but it must be remembered that the Board’s powers are limited here since the dominant decision makers for candidate selection are the Party members in individual electorates and virtually anyone is welcome as a member upon paying a minimum $5 membership fee.
  It is the Caucus that needs a big kick in the backside, not the Peter Goodfellow or the Board. There are major things that Caucus failed to grapple with. Although much work was done on policy, projecting a positive image and feelz was a serious shortcoming, with more negative things coming out than positive. As the late political scientist and commentator Keith Jackson once said, politics is about selling the ‘sizzle’, not the ‘sausage’. Caucus needs to take this on board. Two other things Caucus need to keep constantly in mind – and they should have them pinned up on the wall:
  1. The principal objective of a political party is to get into power and if in power to stay in power.
  2. Loose lips sink elections.
  Seems Caucus got so distracted as to overlook these obvious things.

I love the way that the Bidenistas here on Kiwiblog get so frothy and hysterical about Trump contesting the election. For four years Trump has had to endure the most absurd barrage of bizarre and baseless accusations against him from the Democrats and their fellow travellers in the msm. He has been mocked and abused and maligned and laughed at in the most insane manner possible. And now is his chance to say one big final FU to all his detractors. I don’t care one iota about whether or not his appeals are successful- I am quite prepared to believe that Biden, possibly the most inept and weakest candidate ever to be put up by the Democrats, did indeed garner the largest number of votes in history. And I don’t think Trump is undermining ‘the democratic process’. It’s karma and the Democrats deserve it.

  Although I thought it was going to be a narrow Biden win, I wouldn’t have been pulling my hair at a Trump victory. I would have shook my head in a vague sense of disbelief and bought plenty more popcorn.
  
  What I have always found more intriguing is the almost cult-like behaviour of some of his NZ acolytes. Much of the criticism of post-election events is more in reaction to their posts than anything pro-Biden, per se.

There was a big fuss some months ago that the Police were trying to seize assets from a business owner being ‘proceeds of crime’ the ‘crimes’ being Health and Safety breaches. This has been called ‘over the top’ use of such powers which are usually used against drug dealers. Assets are ‘frozen’ and the matter is currently before the High Court with closing submissions due next week and a judgment probably some time in the new year. It will be very interesting as the Judge is a former Law School Dean specialising in Public Law and so would be acutely aware of the issues. Interestingly there is another reason that allegedly justifies asset seizure but this is suppressed. Perhaps this might be the dominant reason.
The judgment when released will make interesting reading.

    The Police would need to show that there was significant financial benefit from the alleged ‘hate speech’. The objective is to seize the proceeds of crime including money made on the back of it, it is not an additional ‘open ended’ punishment.
    Assuming in this case Health and Safety offences were the only concern (which is how this case has been characterised) then invoking ‘proceeds of crime’ rules could well be over the top. However if there is a pattern of recklessness with regard to Health and Safety issues and a person has financially profited from the lack of a Health and Safety regime and with taking shortcuts, then the issue becomes why the person should financially benefit by having a business advantage over those people and businesses who take Health and Safety seriously.
    The safeguards against excessive and inappropriate use of the ‘proceeds of crime’ legislation lies with the Judiciary who will uphold the law in accordance with its text and in the light of its purpose. The Judiciary has been accused of not fully upholding the ‘three strikes’ legislation by allegedly excessive use of the ‘manifestly unjust’ provision. This clearly shows that the Judiciary is most likely to apply the ‘proceeds of crime’ law with reasonableness and common sense and will no doubt leave the Police upset with some of court’s decisions.

    Mass education was introduced in order to provide a work force for the Industrial Revolution. People had to be able to read/calculate in order to work the new machines. The side benefits gradually increased the quality of life for all citizens until countries became wealthy enough to support those who were dis-inclined or unable to provide for themselves – we are now on the downward path to mass poverty again.

      Possibly but there would have always been a keenness for education. The canny Scoys in Denedin recognised the value of education – they got a university and medical school up and running. The Canterbury settlers too – classes were held on at least one of the first four ships – the forerunner of Christs College (which quite easily could have become a state school), and Nelson Province where keen people set up a schools system which later became part of the state system (Nelson College did become a state school).

        If the teachers in an open shared space are highly competent and if their students are by nature self-disciplined, we see creative teaching and strong learning outcomes. Thort this was worth sharing with the group.
We both felt like Asian last night, so decided to head out early to the Dominion Road part of Chinatown. The place was already heaving!
Fluked a carpark right outside a little Jap joint with a ‘C Grade’ Certificate displayed in the window. Decided to try it anyway. Actually, the food was fab and service great. We’ll probably even get takeaways there one night.
But what i was going to say, we learnt a new word…… ‘kuchisabishii’.
According to our waiter it’s Japanese for, “longing to have or put something in one’s mouth”

I remember when

Pumas versus Australia and France against Australia at the week-end highlighted a growing trend in world rugby.
In total there were sixty one points scored in the two games. Every team managed to score at least twelve points.
Only ONE try was scored.
Referees rulings ruled and unfortunately some of them were very, very poor.

I remember when

Another family have put their farm on the market.
Their morale has been broken by the continuous changes being made to industry requirements.
The constant changing of the rules mean always being worried about making a innocent mistake that costs money.
Never being able to say – there that’s that done, I can just do ordinary farm work for the next few years.
Emissions, nitrogen, water, effluent, animal health, council regulations – all costing money and often difficult to understand.
Being asset rich but cash poor.
The result was a danger to mental health unless something changed.

On ABC he has just said

“If you have got the evidence of fraud, present it,” Christie said on ABC, where he is a contributor. He decried efforts by the President’s lawyers to smear Republican governors who have not gone along with the President’s false claims of voter malfeasance.

“Quite frankly, the conduct of the President’s legal team has been a national embarrassment,” he said, singling out Trump attorney Sidney Powell’s accusations against Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp.
Georgia will conduct another recount of its presidential ballots following a Trump campaign request Saturday, but the recount is extremely unlikely to change his loss in the state. President-elect Joe Biden, who was declared the winner Friday as the state certified the results, has a 12,670 vote or .2% lead over Trump in Georgia.
“This is outrageous conduct by any lawyer,” Christie said Sunday, noting Trump’s attorneys have levied wild accusations in public but have not, so far, raised them in court, where there are consequences for providing false information.
“They allege fraud outside the courtroom, but when they go inside the courtroom, they don’t plead fraud and they don’t argue fraud,” he said.
“Listen,” Christie concluded, “I have been a supporter of the President’s. I voted for him twice, but elections have consequences, and we cannot continue to act as if something happened here that didn’t happen.”
“If you are unwilling to come forward and present the evidence, it must mean the evidence doesn’t exist,” he went on. “The country is what has to matter the most. As much as I’m a strong Republican and I love my party, it’s the country that has to come first.”

    From a legal perspective comments from several of the judges have suggested that some of the lawyers need to up their game … and those are lawyers who don’t even have the balls to accuse anyone of fraud. Why? Because they’d get hauled in front of the bar for lying to the court.
    
    From an ethical and moral perspective trying to subvert the will of the people in a democratic society is reprehensible.
    
    You need to wake up and smell the roses sunshine; the only reason Trump’s lot aren’t presenting ANY evidence of fraud is because there isn’t any – and that’s because there is no fraud.
    
    Trump’s presidency is dead as of 20 Jan 2021 – and no amount of “CPR” from the easily deluded but ever faithful is going to bring it back to life – no matter how many times you post it – or down-tick my reality checks – or say “the evidence is on it’s way”.

  Do provide us evidence where Sydney has said she has been part of the trump legal team, she never has, she has always said she is working independently, as has Lin Wood, and a number of lawyers who are presenting their court cases representing We The People. Another great article from Damien Grant – an actual journalist , beautifully written, funny, insightful and holds Council to account. And then there is Stuff’s donation scheme at the bottom of the page. Maybe they would get more donations, if like tipping your waitress at the table, it went to reward the person you intended. I’d consider paying a donation for that article from Damien. But no I don’t want to contribute to Stuff or agree with their overall editorial direction.

In Georgia, Biden’s lead is only about 12,000 votes. At one stage on election night 23,000 votes were added that were 98% in favour of Biden. It’s just not possible. This is according to the official feed from the NYT website originating from Edison Research, who carried the official results.

  It looks like there was an *error* according to the Herald. It was in addition to the missing boxes from floyd, fayette and walton counties.
  
  Is this the error …..The Herald says, “Meanwhile, Georgia Republican Party chairman David Shafer said a 9626 vote error had been picked up during the hand recount in DeKalb County.
  “One batch was labelled 10,707 for Biden and 13 for Trump – an improbable margin even by DeKalb standards,” Shafer said on Twitter.”
  “The actual count for the batch was 1081 for Biden and 13 for Trump. Had this counting error not been discovered, Biden would have gained enough votes from this one batch alone to cancel out Trump’s gains from Fayette, Floyd and Walton.”
  
  So it looks like it was another * error* picked up in Georgia.
  
  It might not be fraud but there were plenty of screw ups in Georgia.
