You know you’re getting close to South Wokistan when….

People start worrying about robots being dehumanised.

FFS robots are just a bit of software and a bunch of machinery. “Abusing” a robot is no different to swearing at your car when it doesn’t start or a hammer when you whack your thumb.

What was (is) a real problem was when we had (have) people treating other people as robots. That was (is) slavery. This does not apply to robots.

As for asking why people involve robots in sexual roleplay and such – well is it any different to other role playing where people play shoot-em-up first person shooter wargames?

How long before we have laws about being kind to robots, sexual harassment of robots and bullying robots in the workplace?

  This would be a fertile ground for science fiction writers. With all the advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), robots will start protecting their own interests so AI driven legislative systems and Parliament operation will extend hate speech and similar laws to cover robots. So you would face 3 years imprisonment for criticising robots in a jail run by robots.

        I love that both nurses and the Government are being completely ridiculous in their positions. Nurses wanting a 17% payrise which is in the land of fairies. Yet Ardern replies that the Government is strapped for cash, and shelling out money over and over for ridiculous things showing that they clearly have an ability to pay more but priortise these vanity spends over the nurses.
        
        Labour have no one but themselves to blame from time after time while National were the Government stating they weren’t being supportive etc. etc. and then not following through on anything but more promises.

Former Olympians challenge Government guidelines on transgender people in sport

A group of former Olympians and elite New Zealand athletes are challenging Government guidelines on transgender people playing in sport and calling for wider consultation.

The guidelines focus on the principle of inclusion, and cite evidence around the barriers New Zealand’s roughly 50,000 trans and non-binary people face in playing sport and the associated severe mental health impacts.

But this has irked a group of some of New Zealand’s most successful sportspeople, 43 of whom penned an open letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Minister for Sport Grant Robertson citing concerns around “fairness and safety in all sport” arguing the guidelines ignored the rights of female athletes.

Among those concerned were former Olympians Barbara Kendall, Lorraine Moller and Dean Kent, former Olympic Chef de Mission and Emeritus Professor David Gerrard, and New York marathon winner Alison Roe, and All Black Jeff Wilson.

While the guidelines were developed in consultation with the trans community and a wide range of experts and affected groups, including Save Women’s Sport Australasia which supports the open letter, the group want a wider consultation process involving all sports bodies.

“The existing process has not engaged meaningfully with key sporting organisations, clubs and their stakeholders,” Gerrard said.

“This policy has potential to significantly affect competition and participation in women’s sports, it is vital that discussion isn’t held behind closed doors by a select few.”

When you are getting such heavyweights from the sporting world as these saying hold on a minute, surely the Government has to listen. Don’t they?

Save Women’s Sport Australasia spokesperson Ro Edge said the desire to be inclusive would have unintended negative consequences for female athletes losing “fair and meaningful competition”.

She accepted each could develop its own policies it probably would not impact on sports like lawn bowls, but in contact sports like rugby it could put “female athletes at a huge risk”.

“People play contact sport understanding there is a risk to playing, but they think it’s an acceptable risk that is being managed by the sport.

“One of the things females cannot consent to is the possibility of playing or fight against a biological male.”

The people pursing these issues are concerned that transgender people are avoiding sport because of perceived discrimination and worries about how they will be treated. And fair enough, I have no problem with trying to address that in some way. But pretending that once a man transitions to a woman that man now really is a woman and exactly the same as anyone born a woman in every way is just plain crazy. The report concludes that “inclusion of transgender players in community sport” is “paramount” (no problem with that) and that “transgender players have the right to play in the gender that they identify with” – well sorry but I have a massive problem with that.

Even the report itself states that “Research into the physiology of transgender sports players and impact of transitioning (for those going through a medical transition) is currently unsettled.” But blow that, let’s just plow on ahead and pretend that doesn’t matter.

If this carries on, the pendulum will swing the other way. We will become so concerned that we be inclusive and include transgender people, that biological women will end up being discriminated against and left out.

  Pushing diarrhea up hill with a rusty rake unfortunately with regards to this. I understand this has been foisted upon the various sporting organizations without any consultation. Implicitly there will be an either support this or no money theme.
  
  Of course it doesn’t help when you CEO is the poorest performing sports administrator seen over the last decade. Unfortunately NZ sport is about to go the way of the Canterbury Bulldogs and Australian Rugby…….

  and these clowns would ruin the potential sporting success and income of 50% (girls) of the worlds population.

  The AM show had a Canadian Trans gender person on discussing this. Apparently they are a spokesperson for trans atheletes.
  
  After claiming she had been raped by 8 different men while undergoing her gender reassignment (obviously she is one of those people that count something other than pysical sexual assault to be rape) she went on to talk in slogans. Total waste of time.

    Hmm. Dare I say it, but a person cannot be “undergoing” gender reassignment. Either you have had your tackle cut off (or stitched on), and you are therefore reassigned, or you have not, and are not. Perhaps he had boob implants, was dressing up and putting lipstick on. The implication being that he was raped by homosexuals? How does that go down amongst the LGBT community?

  I would have thought it to be simple:
  
  *Ban transgender women competing against normal women when muscle and body mass (developed when they were originally men) plays a significant part of the sport (eg swimming, athletics, weight-lifting).
  
  *Allow transgender women to compete against normal women when muscle and body mass is not a significant aspect of the sport (eg shooting, bowls, chess etc).

  Hahaha. Women did not want to compete against men because the very best women lose against the very best men – so they insisted they be positively discriminated in favor of. Now the transies do not want to compete against men because they would lose against the best men (or otherwise they’d be competing and winning) so now they insist they be positively discriminated in favor of. And the first group that wanted discrimination now don’t want it any more for their successors in the Victim Stakes. It is to laugh.

    Keith, the very best women lose to teenage boys. The US Womens Football team lost to Dallas 15 yo boys 2-5. The Australian Womens Football team lost 0-7 to US NewCastle Jets U15 boys team. Just in the single year 2017, Olympic, World, and U.S. Champion Tori Bowie’s 100 meters lifetime best of 10.78 was beaten 15,000 times by men and boys. 15,000 times! Same for Olympic, World, and U.S. Champion Allyson Felix’s 400 meters lifetime best of 49.26. Also beaten 15k times in 2017 by men and boys.
    In 2017, the best womans time in 100m in IAAF comps, was 10.71s. The best boys U18 time in same comps was 10.15. The numbers are there for everyone to see.

If you wanna be the champion then beat everyone else, man, woman, Martian, DILLIGAF. If you don’t like the testosterone advantage inherent inbound genetics then pick a sport where estrogen gives the advantages. Whatever, don’t come whining when a group does to you (women) what you did to another group (men) because your version of equality was to be able to be a champion without competing against yucky boys.

        Hi Keith, personally I don’t see the problem with segregation in sport between men and women. It encourages take up by giving more the people the opportunity to be successful in something they enjoy. It also helps reduce injuries.
        
        Some sports do have the concept of an ‘Open Class’ and I think that is where is where these people probably need to be playing.

    Keith, winning is not the only (or even the most important) reason for sport.
    The benefits of exercise for mental and physical well-being are well understood. Many people enjoy competition and find it motivating. Separate competitions for men and women make sense for the same reason that separate competitions make sense for different ages and ability levels (including types of disability). They encourage more people to have a go and get the benefits of participation, regardless of whether they can ever be “best”.
    And smart sports organisations realise that all those participants translate into supporters for the elite level teams.

      Ehlanna, good points. But. When you have girls in the US that are the best at their school, in the top 3 in their state for their age, starting to be beaten by boys who identify as girls, or are in “transition” (whatever that means), then there is a problem. The girls may be lining themselves up for a university scholarship. If they don’t get it, then their lives may change completely. Why should a biological boy get to do that to a girl? Even if there are “benefits” to physical wellbeing. Those with gender dysphoria should compete against those of their biological sex. The benefits would still be there. At the moment, biological girls are given a tough time because biological boys who want to be girls are having a tough time.

        Agreed, In Vino. I was responding to Keith’s first comment. I don’t think we have University sports scholarships in NZ, but I know they are big in the US and that women there have had to fight to get schools and colleges to support girls’ sports. Having average male athletes who happen to have transitioned able to take away chance from natural born women hardly seems like a desirable outcome.
        It’s a radical idea, I know, but perhaps schools and colleges could re-orient themselves to focus on academic activities. If all those sports scholarships were converted to academic scholarships, and the same money, time, effort and energy were put into academic development (keeping sport for fun and fitness), perhaps we might one day see a tv program where someone goes to college on a history or chemistry scholarship?

    The age at which the best boys in the world, and yes they really are just boys, have a better time in all the Track and Field events than any woman is 14 or 15. Those boys would beat the female world record holder in every single event.
    I would like to see one transgender woman go in for the Olympics this year. Even at the age of 71 Caitlyn Jenner. formerly Decathlon champion Bruce Jenner, could probably win a Gold Medal or two in the Woman’s Athletic events.

  Just looking at boxing (and probably other pugilistic sports I know nothing about) where people are put into divisions according to weight. Presumably this is for fairness so no small person can be beaten by a larger one. It is not a long bow to draw in my opinion that this kind of thinking should show that it is not fair for a person with high testosterone levels be allowed to compete against those without. Whatever their birth or current gender status is.

    In amateur wrestling and proffessional MMA, there are transgenders beating (beating up) women. I am sure it must be happening in boxing somewhere too.
    Fallon Fox was one that was controversial, and broke the facial bones of her biologically female opponent in a UFC bout.
    Joe Rogan considered her an average fighter technically and was 100% sure that her going through puberty as a male gave her unfair advantage.
    IMO -Male assaulting female, and sick as a spectacle.
    (And I am a big fan of MMA fighting as a sport I dabble in, and also enjoy watching).

  It is very difficult to think anything other than that the great major of the arguments involve only female sport.
  At a lower grade level, there is already considerable acceptance of girls being involved in contact sport alongside boys.
  Rugby, football, cricket and netball often allow such competition at primary and intermediate level.
  If we take the stated 50,000 trans and non-binary people, and apply a geographical spread, it may be possible to have meaningful competition in our major cities.
  However, it’s not a perfect world and no matter how much discussion and thought there is, it will always be a problem.
  Perhaps scientific research will find an acceptable compromise.
  Saharan downhill ski racers understand the problems.

  I don’t think it is fair, especially when it comes to sports, and especially a sport that requires upper body strength. Despite taking estrogen or other hormones, men’s and women’s muscles have different densities. In the U.S, the Marines have a test that recruits must be able to do a minimum of three pull-ups to graduate from boot camp. Fifty five percent of women cannot do it.
  
  So far, female Marines are not succeeding. Fifty-five percent of female recruits tested at the end of boot camp were doing fewer than three pullups; only 1 percent of male recruits failed the test.

Greens will not be returning $54k donation from animal abuser.
A woman known for her severe neglect of animals donated $53,970 to the Greens over 2019 and 2020 but dispite saying it wasn’t aware of the abuse, the party known for its strong stance on animal welfare- won’t be giving the money back. Pete Menzie reports.
The Green Party says it won’t return two five figure sums from a woman convicted of animal neglect which required several horses to be put down.

    Mike Allen made some admittedly stupid comments on FB, that hurt no person or animal vs being convicted of neglecting and ill-treating animals.

    Just Googled this, and Mike was lippy and said some poor taste and borderline things, but he did not threaten to blow up mosques, and the article made no direct link to the Christchurch attacks and his comment.
    He did say (in a FB post he later deleted) that IF his daughter had an acid attack on her {like some of the religion of peace are wont to do} then he would take out mosques until he was taken out himself.
    Silly boastful sort of post, and rather bigoted/prejudiced for sure. But not quite what you dressed it up as.
    Google is good for cutting through inaccurate paraphrasing.

During the long weekend went to Queen Street for the first time in approx. 5 years. What a shit hole!

1). The beggars are now under 25yrs of age, wear designer clothes and aggressive to random walkers. “have some compassion bro” sic.
2). The St James disgrace is something you would see in downtown Mogadishu.
3). Security guards present in any store of note (the best point illustrating this city’s shithole status).
4). While not technically Queen Street the new ‘jewel in the crown’ Commercial Bay could best be summed up as a woke, cold wind tunnel maze with majority of shops catering for 1% of the population.

As an aside not one person using any of the bike lanes in operation in the viaduct, Queen Street or downtown ferry precinct. LOL.

I think that will do me for at least a decade with regards to the inner city…….

  Otherwise I avoid the place. One of the pleasures of my visiting is that my young granddaughter lets me escort her on outings. She’s gracious like that.
  The attitudes of the tangata whenua who sprawl across the footpaths of Queen St towards my part-Asian granddaughter are interesting – they’re racist and it’s just as well she doesn’t notice the bile being spat at her. She’s 4.

  We’ve also been to Queen St a few times lately because we’ve been to an optician down there & with the location of the train station it’s easy to access.
  I thought there was less beggars than previously, but then I don’t pay particular notice. It’s a problem you get in the big city.
  Never been to Mogadishu.
  We have been to Commercial Bay for lunch on occasion. We thought it wasn’t too bad.
  Not interested in the other shops, but then they weren’t designed with us in mind.
  Personally I think Quay St should be ploughing up and turned into a park. Cars can bigger off somewhere else – underground maybe.

  I could add though, parts of Queen St are ‘dark’ and poorly lit. Makes it feel depressing and look more dirty/shady.
  
  As for commercial bay, makes me dizzy just walking around it, doesn’t feel connected nor does it have any character.
  
  Overall, the Auckland CBD feels soulless.

For the past 4 weeksTVNZ have been playing a wildlife film backgrounding what damage has been wrought to NZ’s flora and fauna by the immigration of humans for the past 800 years. It also played out what the Predator Free 2050 policy was about, what has been done and what needs to be done.

Taking the bunkum of the indigenous population to one side for a moment the efforts of those involved is impressive and important.

However, on Sat they started to talk about what future technologies may be available/required in order to turn the tide against the introduced and invasive vermin (rats, mice, stoats etc). One “weapon” may be gene editing to sterilise these populations. And then the bs started, to the indigenous population, this could be considered a step too far and tapu! What bs! How can it be tapu? Is it a case that the taniwha wants another 30 pieces of silver?
Do these people have no shame at all, or appreciate how ridiculous they make themselves look?

        Actually that is not what I think. I do see a difference between what a 18 year old kid says and a 30 year old adult though.
        This is particularly so when the then 18 year old is now doing something where his views on race or sex or whatever he was talking about have absolutely no relevance to his playing Cricket.
        The 30 year old, on the other hand was then, and is now a politician. If you display bigoted tendencies at 30 I don’t believe you change later in life. I also think it is entirely fair to judge politicians a great deal more strictly than you do people in more normal occupations. They are, after all, claiming for themselves the right to decide how we must behave and how we must live our lives.
        As far as allowing people we like to do things I would have to say that I have no opinion at all about the English cricketer. I had never heard of him until this came up. I will admit that I think Ms Ardern is an incompetent ass though.

  I think Banks has a solid point.
  
  When we immigrated to NZ in 1992 we were given a book by NZ Internal Affairs on NZ etiquette etc as part of our documentation pack – what was considered acceptable behaviour in NZ.
  
  It was a useful book for navigating the minefield of moving to a new country. It was clearly written for people who came from non-Western backgrounds but still had a few interesting items for us who came from a very similar (ie. Western, Rugby playing culture).
  
  I don’t believe they had a chapter on not eating dogs. Perhaps that needs to be addressed.
  
  But then I suppose they don’t give out this useful book any more, coz diversity and RACIST!.

  A few years ago a live shipment of several hundred dogs was intercepted on the Thai/Khmer border. I think they may have been destined for restaurants in Vietnam.
  I remember thinking at time, what will become of them? They certainly won’t be euthenaisded. Thailand has a serious stray dog problem, but they don’t put them down even if they kill people.
  They could release them into the wild. Sure enough I read they were put in cages and most died of neglect.

The extraordinary thing is that most of them will continue to vote Labour. Labour has just cancelled an important change to the road heading out of Tauranga, Te Puna to Omokoroa, which was scheduled to be 4 lanes. That’s now cancelled, yet the party vote in Tauranga went to Labour. We used to have a moderately well-informed electorate – now it seems that it’s all emotion. One can only hope that the shine on the princess will wear off and voters will return to being sensible.

        In New Zealand, pensions are income transfers directly from the pockets of workers to retirees. It’s an entitlement regardless of how much or how little people may have worked or paid in tax. Many if not most of today’s pensioners get more out of the system than they have put in, even if you inflation-adjust for past PAYE/tax contributions, because:
        
        1. Consider how most of the medical care people will ever receive in their lifetimes will typically be towards the end and is extremely costly.
        2. Other taxpayer-funded benefits provided for the retired and elderly like residential care subsidies and palliative care are quite substantial.
        
        All the above as well as the actual pension itself is paid by the current private sector workforce, which is also expected to support hundreds of thousands of public sector workers, from civil servants and bureaucrats to our beloved teachers, cherished nurses, respected police, noble lawyers etc. who are down to the very last one all national treasures and worth their weight in gold ad nauseam.
        
        Outside blogs like this, most people are ignorant or apathetic about the true nature of taxation in this country. The fact is too few are expected to support too many while we simultaneously import low-quality immigrants from the Third World and export net taxpayers to Australia. Insane and unsustainable.
        
        (Cue some moron to start screaming I want to fire all the nurses/doctors/teachers/police/social workers and make granny and granddad work in the mines.)

On the AMShow they just announced the rise in house prices this month fell from 8.9% rise, to 8.8% rise…..WOW
Even more under whelming when you understand that the number of available houses sold, was down to 15000, compared to 60000 a few years ago.
Making this 0.1% fall, statistically, an anomaly not a trend, as your sample size is so small by comparison to your result, ONE house sold in the lower price range could affect it.

  I keep hearing things can’t go on this way, but they do.
  If you can afford around a grand week and have 10% deposit you can buy a million dollar house with a 2.89% mortgage set for three years.
  If the mortgage goes up to 5% you’re going to need to find another 20% more.

    If you have that 10% it means you are probably saving $500/week at least for 4 years and with your rent of probably $700/week you can do the mortgage payments easily.
    As you say in 3 years when you come off the fixed term and your repayments go up by $500/week you will feel it but by then your earnings should have gone up (unless you are a nurse!) but you should have built $200K (possibly a lot more) of equity thru capital gains so you are going to have a significant safety margin.
    Its still is better than renting!!

      No kids for the foreseeable future.
      Having said that there are kids at my granddaughter’s daycare only a few months old.
      
      I knew a kid upcountry in Thailand who the grandmother looked after. Poor wee bugger cried all the time for any reason. I never saw his mum who didn’t live with the dad. Then one day her new bloke killed her.
      Police came to the scene and told the killer to ring her mum to arrange for the body to be taken away.
      Apparently his family could afford a lawyer to defend him in court, but her family couldn’t so there was a good chance he was treated leniently.
      In the meantime the boy stayed where he was, started school and was his life picked up a bit until his grandmother unexpectedly died.
      By now they were staying with his uncle where the grandmother ran a noodle shop. When she died it transpired she owed a ton of money!
      The boy stayed on as an unwelcome liability and eventually went to live with his grandmother’s sister.
      Now I understand he’s with his father.
      He’ll probably get to about 16-17 and either become a monk, a security guard, or a father himself. Maybe all three.
      It’s a mean old world, I can tell you.

    Rates, maintenance and insurance add something like $150-200/week.
    
    Not easy to find a 10% LVR loan right now.

Just a follow on from Andrea Vance’s article that the Labour government thinks it’s ok to have weekly briefings with MSM Editors to set the media coverage “agenda” for the week …

As to be expected this has had zero coverage by our own State Media (TVNZ and RNZ) and private broadcasters (and presumably Sinead Boucher is sending Andrea Vance a “please explain” demand).

However, will the Australian MSM eventually pick up on this and start asking questions of the government?

If that happens, what an appalling indictment of the NZ mainstream media (and from a professional perspective, how bloody embarrassing):

*When we have a situation where the NZ MSM is barely covering government incompetence and billion dollar policy failures …. instead it is spending more time and effort holding the Opposition to account.

*When we have a situation where it is left to the overseas (Australian) MSM to hold the NZ government to account (because the NZ MSM is missing in action).

I am ashamed of the NZ MSM, especially their editors and most of their sycophantic journalists, columnists and cartoonists.

While I condemn what Jake Bezzant has done and think a law change is needed to stop this happening, would you as a parent be happy if you knew your children were posting nude images of themselves on their cell phones to their boyfriend.I might be seen as a bit square as I am in my 70’s but I disagree with the Journalist Verity Johnson’s statement, “well before you say it’s your fault for sending them”, let’s agree on something the fact is that,if you are under 35 and have a smart phone, then you will send nudes, it’s as normal as ordering an Uber.

  Well first, not everyone sends nudes to other people, but if you do its fine as long as 1. It’s consensual and 2. The receiving party understands they dont have permission to pass it on. I also dont think the big problem is girls sending nudes to their boyfriends as long as 1 and 2 apply, you’ll find the much larger issue is dudes thinking every girl wants to see their cock without thinking that sending an unsolicited dick pic is the same as flashing someone in public and should carry the same judicial consequence.

Just reading an interesting article about Nicola Sturgeon in the New Yorker .

Apart from Jacinda getting a specific mention as a female leader of a beautiful, small, forward thinking country there are other similarities between Nicola and our leader. Good on the pandemic but one in four kids in poverty, education system, which was once the best in the UK, slipping, roads being described as manky, lost services, more homeless people. And I am only half way through.

Sturgeon is described by one interviewee as a cautious figure resistant to transformational change. And the writer actually asks whether Sturgeon does things out of political opportunism or if her motives were more sincere.

Remind you of anyone?

In the herald this morning woman’s victim advocate Louise Nicholas was not happy TV one screened a doco on Aussie actor Graig McLachan being found not guilty of 13 charges of indecent assault on woman.

According to her the doco re-victimises woman who have suffered at the hands of male sexual assaults and she also said just because a court of law found this man not guilty does not mean he is.

That is an unbelievable biased /woke/lefty statement to make in my view and shows no respect for our justice system.

A male is found not guilty of sexual assaults by the law but he is still guilty in her eyes!

We can all feel for woman who have suffered through sexual abuse but what about the men who have been wrongly accused of that crime — don’t they deserve to have their names cleared publicly if they want to?

  A not guilty verdict doesn’t mean he didn’t do it. Beyond reasonable doubt is a high standard of proof. People are entitled to have their own opinions about what happened, and express them (O.J. Simpson etc). The people to worry about are the ones who don’t investigate the facts thoroughly and just always reflexively side with the accuser or the accused.

  Rusty, I read the same piece last night, and I agree with you.
  
  Nicholls does her cause no good by her reaction. If she 8s sincere in her cause, she should be concentrating her ire on those that do sexually assault women, are charged and not found guilty. McLaclhan was found not guilty on all 13 charges. Because of the ABC’s MeTo campaign against him, his career is now dead. And it appears their defence statement for the ongoing defamation hearing is built on further accusations, and if true, should result in further charges against McLauchlan.
  
  What was also concerning about this story, was the behaviour of the judge in the court case last year. Her statements to me should be sufficient for her to get a reminder about her role from Victoria’s Chief Justice. A judge should not be describing accusers as “brave and credible witnesses” when all charges against an accused person are returned as not guilty, because the evidence on which the charge was based was not sufficient as whether to support the charging of the accused person. Such comments suggest the judge wanted to find McLauchlan guilty, irrespective of evidence and the case against him.
  
  Which brings us back to Nicholls, and her statement that despite McLauchlan being found not guilty, she believes he is still guy because McLauchlan was accused of sexual assault by women. What a perverse perception, is it any wonder there is difficulty in prosecuting true sexual assault cases? Nobody is denying the seriousness of sexual assault and that the prosecution of those charged deserves the full weight of the law, but those found not guilty do not deserve their lives to continuing to be trashed by sideline commentators such as Nicholls.
  
  A couple of months ago TVNZ also played a UK programme about 3 men accused of rape, all were innocent. In one instance, the young man was charged and being prosecuted in court only for the case to fail, because of the existence of evidence that proved the accuser was a liar, despite being very credible in the witness box the day before. That young man’s life is also in tatters.
  
  What does Nicholls says to cases such as this? Or does she believe the adage that it is ok to accuse people, and find them guilty (irrespective of whether they are guilty or not, and whether there is evidence to support the charges).
  
  What has happened to the presumption of innocence? And proof beyond reasonable doubt?

Fast forward to the utopian present and we no longer have inmates , we have “housemates” or ‘men in our care” and the prison is actually a “self care residence” .

  Self-care residences have been around for twenty-plus years. They are stand-alone buildings within the prison fence where inmates who are nearing release and on work release are housed. As the name implies, they look after themselves, cook, clean, and generally prepare for life outside the wire. They’re actually a good thing, so prisoners who have served long sentences during which things on the outside might have changed significantly are prepared for their eventual release.

Hate crimes in NYC are up 111%. The post says “Among the incidents over the past month are attacks against Jews amid flaring tensions between Israel and Hamas, and assaults on Asians”

The Hate crime stat links to a May story of a man, whose ethnicity isn’t named , but it is clear to see he’s black, randomly walking up to an Asian woman on the sidewalk and giving her a single punch that knocks her unconscious.

Then their is this June story 6 days ago of a man , who hits an Asian Woman with a cane in the head and body on the subway platform. His ethnicity is not named and it is called a possible hate crime.

Another story also in May of two Asian women attacked with a hammer in times square. Again video footage but the headline doesn’t name the ethnicity.

This story in April of an Asian man collecting cans for money had his head stomped. Pictures of attacker. But no mention of the attackers race in the headline.

This March story, the only one covered by the NZ Herald, , where a 65 year old Asian woman was randomly selected on the street and brutally kicked and stomped by a black man in NYC. And the black security guards watching closed the doors and didn’t help.

In all five stories the attackers are black. There are more stories. It’s a crime wave. If it was white men repeatedly and brutally attacking people of a targeted ethnicity in the street would that be called Right Wing White Supremacy in the headline?

Is this Black Supremacy and why is it not named? Is Black Supremacy and racism even possible we were told lately only whites can be racist? What wing is this racism left or right? AP News blames Donald Trump for calling it the china virus – but if that’s true then why aren’t they white supporters wearing maga hats?. Why in all headlines is it called “Asian attacks” and the race of the victim is named instead of the race of the attackers. When a white racist commits crime we call it white supremacy in the headline and all whites are held to account , we are told it’s our culture, our white privilege.

If white men were repeatedly and violently attacking Asians in the streets of the USA would NZ Herald and Stuff report it. Where is the consistency? These are called Asian attacks as if all races are attacking Asians. That is not the case.

Is Marxism and the lefts focus on race and identity politics improving the world and bringing more equity and understanding. Or is it fueling a 111% increase in violence and racial hate.

According to Minister for Māori Development, Willie Jackson, Māori TV’s ratings have fallen away because it lacks good programming – in English.

“In the past it has all been about the language (te Reo), a huge focus on the language, but we need our own news in English and we need our own programmes in English; it’s not so much about the language, it’s about the stories.   Well, most non-Maori New Zealanders don’t speak te Reo either so I suggest we shouldn’t do news and information (especially from the Government) using language we know most people won’t understand. That is also using te Reo at the expense of our people.

  On the one hand, the Government’s own Maori Language Revitalisation Strategy wants to see one million Kiwis speaking Maori by 2040, and as part of that is actively working to get more Maori language used in multiple sectors. And anybody who complains about Maori being used in the News, for example, is branded a racist.
  
  On the other hand, the Minister of Maori Development says there’s too much Maori and we need to speak more English!

    “Nau mai ki ngā hākinakina o te wā” is something reporter Saville usually says every evening on 1 News, and is understood by few, but from my observations of friends and relatives, causes irritation to outright anger at the interruption it is to majority English viewing.
    
    It is actually unbelievable that those supporting te reo Maori do not see this causes more opposition to learning the language than it is in any way helpful.
    
    And of course if you do pick up the pronunciation and understand its meaning, how often a day do you say to anyone “welcome to the sports of the day”?

We discussing the ‘Queen’s Honors’ last night with my partner’s mum. She reckons “…they are now so diluted, when you look at some of the latest recipients the title has become almost meaningless”.

In fact she was saying the only one she ever thought well and truly deserved, was when Sir Bob was knighted….and that was about 30 years ago!!

        Never heard any explain it like this.
        Originally Maori was used in the sense of ‘ordinary’ or ‘normal’, to make distinct from the newcomers, Pakeha, and even ‘wiwi’ (French). They had no need to distinguish themselves before contact with the outside, so their identity was tribal grouping before that: your iwi, hapu, whanau. There was no nation, so Maori was the “ordinary”. Not the people on floating islands, with voices that made hissing noises (the ‘S’) and brought steel and gunpowder.
        Tangata= people. Maori tangata; ordinary person.

        That is very common language construct. Why have a word for “other people” until you actually encounter them? Before that all people are just “us”-people.
        
        In Southern Africa they have the Bantu people.
        
        Bantu (or more correctly, abantu) just means people, but can also be used to differentiate black people from “foreigners” (abelungu – literally the white foam that blows in from the sea).
        
        If there is a crowd of mixed people (whites and blacks) then they would be referred to as people (abantu). If just – or mainly – white people they would be differentiated as abelungu.
        
        Same deal with Inuit. Inuit just means “people”.

    If any indigenous people first saw Antarctica surely they would more likely have been the people of Tierra del Fuego, in Patagonia, at 54deg south compared with the Auckland Islands at 50 degrees south.
    
    Not that I would dare travel aboard one of the ancient South American Indians’ big, ocean-capable balsa rafts.

  It seems to me that the Hui Te Rangiora legend might be similar to St Brendan’s 9th century voyage, into which some have read references to icebergs, Iceland and even America.

        Macquarie Island is a further 200 km southwest of the Auckland Islands. its European discoverer reported finding an ‘ancient wreck’, possibly a Polynesian canoe. It’s another 1000 km to Antarctica, around the same distance we know Polynesians must have sailed to reach Easter Island. given the rough Southern Ocean, I doubt Polynesians ever made it to Antarctica, but they could well have encountered icebergs.

        Got to Macquerie eh? Well that’s still 1450km away from Antarctica (if you’re 100% lucky and hit the nearest point). With a more realistic path it’s 1600+km.
        
        That’s a big ask in a hollowed out log especially since the seas get really treacherous.
        
        Encountering icebergs is far more reasonable – they are reasonably common as far south as Auckland Islands/Macquerie. Heck, they are frequent enough off mainland NZ for those to be “recorded” encounters.

        I think Mikey is likely correct, there is carbon dated archaeological evidence on Enderby Island, and it is suggested that Ngai Tahu people made the voyage several times. Though I somehow doubt that it was for foraging specifically as there is little on the island that isn’t available further North, and the sea crossing is usually pretty rough. Possible though I guess.
        
        As for McQuarie, I can’t find mention of pre-European wreckage though several unidentified wrecks that have could belong to one of the vessels known to have been lost in the area.
        
        Given the fact that the average temp at Macquarie is around 4 degrees (and doesn’t vary a lot), with incessant mist, rain/snow and wind; it seems an unlikely destination. Only occupied by Europeans for sealing and related wildlife harvesting (penguin oil extraction).

  I have been down to the S Ocean and you would not be able to sail an outrigger canoe down there.
  
  Neither would you be able to navigate the way they did in the P Is as you can go days without seeing the sun of the stars.
  
  The wind chill factor would have been horrendous and they would have frozen to death long before they got anywhere near the S Continent. As for getting to the Pole what a load a hog wash.
  
  First you have to traverse the glaciers, then across the polar ice cap and the Pole is at an altitude of 2,000 metres plus.

    Maori got as far south as Enderby Island 350km south of Stewart Island not long after NZ was discovered. Humans can survive incredibly cold conditions even without clothing – eg the inhabitants of Terre del Fuego, the Yaghan, lived far south of that latitude, diving naked for shellfish year round and had little or no clothing until after Europeans started visiting.
    
    But I agree there is no chance Maori got anywhere near Antartica.

    Before they lost the art of building them, it is generally agreed that Maori and related peoples travelled extensively using double hulled canoes that were considerably more seaworthy than single hulled or outrigger canoes. And Maori were perfectly capable of making (at possibly considerable effort and expense) clothes far more insulating than “grass skirts”. For example sealskin clothes and capes, feather based cloaks would be somewhat similar to down if rather fragile and no doubt subject to becoming waterlogged at sea.
    
    As noted above, is is essentially proven that Maori visited the Snares (visible in good weather from the far South of NZ) and Enderby Island which is part of the Auckland Islands group. Hearths have been found and carbon dated, not many, but some.
    
    I don’t think there is evidence that Campbell Island was visited, or, as again above, McQuarie Island.
    
    And as a note, the inhabitants of Terra del Fuego are reported to have had small and relatively primitive canoes only, and given the lack of forests with trees of any size that is not surprising. There is zero evidence that in pre-european times any natives of the Americas ever voyaged south of Cape Horn.

  Just want to comment that I have a son who lives in Auckland at present, doesn’t drive and gets around by bicycle usually. He bikes in the area (so far) between St Heliers, Onehunga, and Mt Albert.
  
  So you can, and without excessive effort. And because he keeps having his bike nicked, he rides a rubbish old MTB that he has partially restored. That is it has reasonable running gear but still looks bad to discourage thieves.
  
  Helps to be young, relatively fit, and without a driver’s licence.

The Reserve Bank has bought $50 billion of mostly NZ Government bonds since March last year, Jenée Tibshraeny writes at the the Interest web site.

She writes:

“It’s committed to stopping these regular bond purchases in June 2022. The RBNZ has been buying fewer and fewer bonds every week. Next week it plans to buy $250 million of bonds – $100 million less than recent weeks.”

Apparently the banking community, which once ridiculed Social Credit, seems happy with the Reserve Bank strategy.

It ain’t over yet …

Taiwan, which with New Zealand was one of the safest places to be in the Covid-19 pandemic, continues to fight an outbreak after 17 months of relative safety.

Its level 3 alert has been extended to June 28, with mask wearing compulsory when outdoors. Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Centre reports 211 locally transmitted cases and 26 deaths.

Like New Zealand, Taiwan has been light in proportion of its population vaccinated against Covid-19.

Japan is helping Taiwan with 1.2 million doses of vaccine, and the United States is sending the country 750,000 doses. (Taiwan’s population is a little over 23 million.)

Taiwan is locked in a row with China over vaccine supply. It accuses China of blocking a deal with BioNTech to import the vaccine co-developed by the German company and Pfizer.

Beijing says it is willing to supply vaccines to Taiwan, including BioNTech, through Chinese partner Fosun.

Taiwanese law bans the import of Chinese-made medicines.

Taiwan is still doing better than NZ in Covid-19 cases per million of population, but its death rate has been higher.

Latest international figures:

Taiwan: Total Covid 19 cases 11,491, cases per million of population 482; deaths 286, deaths per million 12.

New Zealand: Total cases 2,682, cases per million, 536; deaths 26, deaths per million 5.

She’s cancelled her interview with Hosking because she can’t do interviews with everyone. Andrea Vance can’t get a straight answer or her OIA’s on time. But Ardern has time to play to the international media and CNN? Why? I guess the thing NZer’s love most about this government and the reason they were overwhelmingly voted back in, is we are flattered by the overseas attention of international celebrities and the biggest newspapers telling us we are the coolest, cleverest country in the world and how envious they are. I guess that is why the government spin doctors are focussed on more press with the USA . Because NZers care more what CNN says than the closer to home, on the ground, lived reality of Andrea Vance or the boring intractable problems of homelessness, houseprices, tax, debt , inflation, commute times etc.

On TV1 news tonight there was a hit on National MP Paul Goldsmith, who said recently that, on balance, colonisation was a good thing for Maori.

Leaving out the “on balance” phrase, Maiki Sherman lashed Goldsmith’s statement.

Sherman repeated, with a video, Marama Davidson’s crap about Davidson’s grandmother having her “Maori numeracy” beaten out of her.

What numeracy? What mathematics did Maori have?

Then there were a series of clips of National hiccups since the election.

When will politicians stand up to the State Media Conglomerate – State TV, State radio, and the subsidised print media?

The news conglomerate has dropped even pretence to be unbiased and neutral.

    Economist Michael Reddell writes on results of colonisation on his blog, Croaking Cassandra:
    
    “My best guess is that if, somehow, these islands had not been settled by outsiders but had simply been governed from outside for 100 years or so – as with most of these other Pacific states – real GDP per capita here might be similar to that in Samoa.”
    
    It’s hard to dispute that.
    
    Reddell is responding to a ridiculous article in the Sunday Times recently in which it was stated: “debt is a colonial construct.”
    
    So are cash, banking, digital transactions, commercial law, the cadastral system that allows orderly land transactions and use of property as security for borrowing, and indeed the country’s two written languages.
    
    I would go further than Reddell and argue that the present national drive backwards into indigenous culture has already begun taking New Zealand down towards the economic level of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and poorer islands.
    
    Our relative GDP per capita is already well behind Australia’s as we begin to de-Westernise.
    
    Australia will eventually be provoked to slamming the “back door” entry from New Zealand. We will be trapped here with the idiots who are Hell bent on taking us out of the First World.

    ACT appeals. But even brave David Seymour looks to have been nobbled at the last minute as he tried to stem panic reform on gun ownership after the mosques massacres.
    
    Seymour wanted the issue directed to a Parliamentary committee for rational discussion.
    
    Seymour was outside the House talking to reporters or someone at the critical voting time. As I understand it, Seymour thus missed lodging the sole vote that would have put the changes before a committee.
    
    My guess is that National, which has some influence over Seymour’s electorate seat, got to him, and organised the vote to be missed.
    
    Collins did line up with with Jacinda on the arms issue.
    
    These days Collins shows a bit of fire, then a day or two later backs down, as in the Goldsmith incident.
    
    Seymour was right on the arms law changes. What have they done beyond buggering much firearms and hunting sport? Meanwhile gangs run amok with guns, unaffected, and violent crime is rampant.
    
    But is Seymour tough enough, and does he have enough backing, to stand up to the Ardernists?

Why are public service workers so entitled. I guarentee if most kiwis knew exactly how much a nurse earned they wouldnt be so supportive. Stop holding the country to ransom and get realistic, you just received a double digit pay rise a couple of years back. Plenty of us in the private sector were essential workers too. You ain’t special.

  Wife is on top of nurses salary as a nurse practitioner, She only works 0.7 as we have a lifestyle block. Wage varies depending on how many public holidays she works. After tax KiwiSaver etc she gets between $2500 and $3000 a fortnight. Mind you to get that she spent an extra 7 years studying in her own time and she works effectively as a doctor . Now you know. Ps the IT guy who is just 25 years old earns more than that on her department.
