We all read about billionaires flying private jets to “climate saving” talkfests and wonder at the hypocrisy of it all and how thick their hides must be. Now Sir Richard Branson is about to launch himself into a space tourist junket mission – with great excitement he tells us.

So I’m considering applying for this prize (since the initial 5 year trial period has been extended), in the interests of our climate “emergency” on the basis that all the CO2 released in the mission must equal a few hundred thousand unnecessary extra tonnes emitted. Setting aside the medical risks, these ‘vaccines’ do not confer immunity which is what we have long been conditioned to expect once vaccinated.

So even with 100% vaccination, New Zealand will experience ‘cases’ and some deaths.

Therefore Ardern’s Zero Covid™ strategy is nothing other than a full-blown fantasy.

It’s a fantasy stoked by the media who continue to push the paid-for, approved narrative while literally millions of NZers follow the Ardern clown show like brain-dead zombies.

No matter how easy and superficially satisfying, I have purposed to resist ridiculing the clown show when it’s participants screw up aspects of implementing Zero Covid™. Such ridicule only legitimises the doomed strategy when we should, I believe, focus on calling out Ardern’s profound failure to lead with integrity, and her glaring lack of a plan which New Zealanders gave her a mandate to create.

  krazy – as usual you are spot on in your comments. Great Britain has found that the vaccine will not eliminate all hospitalisations from Covid nor stop all deaths. So for example there were 34 deaths from Covid yesterday in the UK.
  
  Given our governments pursuit of the impossible goal of zero Covid, what is the endgame here? Even when most people are fully vaccinated there will still be deaths from Covid. There will still be hospitalisations from Covid.
  
  Given that no one is allowed to die from Covid in New Zealand how can we escape from this rolling maul of lockdowns? Are we going to remain a hermit Kingdom, isolated from the world?
  
  Even the UK is tentatively heading towards learning to live with Covid. Covid is never going away. Surely we have to learn to live with a virus while mitigating the risks?

    At some stage, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will face a choice.
    Does she and her government continue to pursue the “elimination strategy”, maintaining tight border controls to keep Covid-19 out of New Zealand?
    Or does she someday make the decision, like Australia has, that Covid-19 isn’t going away, and we need to learn to live with it?
    Imagine making that call. It’s brutal, laced with so many uncertainties.

    Of course not. You state that like it is a surprise. The vaccines will massively reduce deaths and hospitalisations. That is exactly what you are seeing in the UK. And that will happen in New Zealand unless we are locked up forever.
    
    The people who die in the future will be a few very frail people for whom the vaccine didn’t work, or occasionally people in their 50s and 60s and sometimes younger who chose not to be vaccinated.
    
    Those 35 deaths in the UK are insignificant. New cases are surging towards 100000 daily. Without the vaccines several hundred would die every day.
    
    My fear is that Jacinda just does not get it and we will be locked up in New Zealand for a decade. And of course that will mean that people like me who have friends and family overseas will need to leave New Zealand.
    
    I just don’t think jacinda has the cognitive ability to get it right.

If you were treated for COVID-19 symptoms with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, you should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure what treatments you received or if you have more questions about getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
    
    Experts do not yet know how long someone is protected from getting sick again after recovering from COVID-19. The immunity someone gains from having an infection, called “natural immunity,” varies from person to person. It is rare for someone who has had COVID-19 to get infected again. It also is uncommon for people who do get COVID-19 again to get it within 90 days of when they recovered from their first infection. We won’t know how long immunity produced by vaccination lasts until we have more data on how well the vaccines work.

    Experts need to understand more about the protection that COVID-19 vaccines provide in real-world conditions before making that decision. Other factors, including how many people get vaccinated and how the virus is spreading in communities, will also affect this decision. We also don’t yet know whether getting a COVID-19 vaccine will prevent you from spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 to other people, even if you don’t get sick yourself. CDC will continue to update this page as we learn more.

Krazy is not saying the vaccine won’t reduce the chances of contracting COVID, he’s saying that it won’t eliminate COVID entirely and that, therefore, Ardern’s zero-COVID ‘strategy’ is a deluded fantasy. Instead of working on a plan to return to normal life with freedom to travel, accepting that COVID won’t be entirely eliminated, she’s doubling down on approach that will see us isolated in our little COVID-free bubble for years to come, while the rest of the world gradually regains its sanity and its freedom.

      The MMR vaccine is 93% effective, the annual flu shot is roughly 40-60% effective depending on the vitality (many factors), these are both vaccines.
      
      The polio vaccine is 99-100% after 4 shots with the last being 4 years later.
      
      The definition of a vaccine is not 100% effective nor does it need to be. The purpose of a vaccine is to prevent needless deaths and reduce the severity of infection.

    Yes Brian you are slightly right. They are meant to, but that does not mean they do.
    
    There are vaccines and there are vaccines.
    
    Some, like smallpox are long lasting and work on wide variety of related viruses. The smallpox vaccine isn’t even really the smallpox vaccine. It is made from a weaker cousin and covers smallpox, monkeypox, cowpox etc etc – one shot and you’re done for life.
    
    Some, like flu and coronavirus vaccines, are very specific and only work on a few strains and are short lived. Hence the need for getting your flu jab every year (as I suspect you do) and some years it works better than others and still heaps of people die from flu each year. Hence too why there has never been a vaccine for the common cold.
    
    Guess which group SARS-CoV-2 falls into?
    
    While there might be some medical benefit in this vaccine, it is by no means a long term solution. Pfizer are already saying a 6-month booster will be required. Then no doubt everyone needs to get jabbed again for the epsilon variant or something.
    
    In many ways it is just theatre until the inevitable happens – the pandemic will just go away like they always do and drift into the background – like every pandemic and outbreak that has ever happened in human history.

    The problem here is that Jacinda has not changed the story, although the science as to what the virus and its vaccine can and can’t do has moved on very substantially since the time of the initial lockdown.
    
    It was originally hoped that a vaccine could be developed that would confer actual immunity, as is the case with some other vaccines, such that we could expect eventually to keep covid out forever and just needed to hang on with temporary restrictions before getting back to a covid-less normal.
    
    Now that it is clear that the vaccine can’t do immunity, or prevent transmission, she’s got to get upfront and explain what the intention and ambition now is.
    
    What is she waiting for? What new information or development does she expect that she hasn’t got now, that would enable her actually to make a fucking decision?

  The vaccination rollout has been an embarrassment and a disaster for the country. What kind of idiots are New Zealanders? They cannot even organise a proper vaccine rollout during the greatest pandemic of the modern era?

  KK, the vaccines do what they said they will do. Nothing more,nothing less. 95% protection, near 100% protection against death. At Xmas the U.K. were losing 1500 a day. That is down to 10-20 a day. The vaccine has saved 30,000 in the U.K. so far and rising. No need for you to make your decision on the vaccine at the moment because the number of people who want to be immunised greatly exceed supply. Of course it is your right not to be immunised but don’t grizzle like the people stuck in Sydney if your decision has consequences. They were told flyer beware. A factor in many people’s choice is that being vaccinated benefits others as well as themselves but I doubt that interests you.

Here is a point I find hard to understand or comprehend in New Zealand. Theoretically we could very shortly end up with the more deadly strain of the Coronavirus, Delta escape through our borders and into our Country with many dying just like is happening in many other parts of the world like our neighbors Australia and Fiji.
You could bet your bottom dollar that if this did happen Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister, Grant Robertson our Deputy Prime Minister and the Labour Party would quickly revert back to the policy they used from day one of their term in Goverment it is the previous Governments fault with the media preparing the headlines to back their statements.
The Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern would be spouting look how we have saved New Zealander’s over the past year and a bit by good management when really it has been more like good luck than good management.
When are the sheeple of New Zealand going to wake up to this Prime Minister who they seem to adore without looking at the facts of inept and irresponsible with her failures of many policies she has implemented.
The failures have been Housing, Mental Health, Rail, Economy, Transport, Immigration, Education, Social Welfare and last but not least Pike River Mine that Jacinda Ardern and Andrew Little used as a political smear to taint John Key a former Prime Minister only to fail again.
A vote for Labour and Jacinda Ardern at the next Election is a vote for more failure and a loss of freedom of travel, your views and fredom of speech and more borrowing for future Generations to pay for.

  I read a couple of my grandsons school newsletters recently – his parents have now pulled him out of that school. They were about one quarter Maori words mixed up in an English text and unintelligible to anyone not bi-lingual.

    Anyone that is bullied or forced to take the vaccine or lose their job, would have to have agreed in writing at the outset of the contract to do so, for it to be enforceable. It would have had to be a known prior condition of employment. Even then it is on dodgy ground.
    
    Requiring someone to have a regular Covid check would be Ok, just as regular drug tests are Ok as a condition of employment.
    
    New Zealanders have the right to informed consent, and legally have the right to refuse.

        I doubt you are correct, at least not in respect of certain types of employment. For instance it might be compulsory for MIQ workers to be vaccinated and agree to be tested as part of the job conditions. If they refused they could expect to be reassigned.
        
        I don’t believe the Employment Court would find that to be an unreasonable requirement.
        
        A requirement to be vaccinated would have to be reasonable and case specific. For instance I doubt whether a restaurant could make it a condition of employment.

Pretty much every journalist is writing today about when and how we open up, conveniently ignoring the worlds slowest vaccine rollout and the ongoing ignoring of the abundantly available Astra Zeneca vaccine.
They are all asking for a plan while missing the elephant in the room and that is how they get manipulated by a very savvy PM. Ardern has no doubt already planned a dozen announcements/press conferences/press releases and opportunities for us to bathe in her magnificence.
Announcing a plan now would do away with those opportunities and even more scary is she could be actually held accountable for achieving a goal she set herself that isnt ridiculously low…like being 6% ahead on the vaccine rollout.

  The physics is well understood by those who understand physics!
  
  If our eyes could detect the wavelengths absorbed and radiated by CO2 we would live in a perpetual fog – unable to see more than a metre or so.
  
  When CO2 is added the level CO2 radiates to space rises, where the air is thinner. And cooler, so the rate of loss decreases. More heat is retained until a new equilibrium is reached.
  
  Evidence for this from satellite measurements.

    The current consensus -IPCC – is from benign (predominately empirical studies but one modelling group sits at the low end) to large (almost exclusively modelling studies). What is more, the uncertainty hasn’t narrowed in the last 50 years of science and looks set to widen even further with the next generation of IPCC models.
    
    This is well understood by those who understand the physics and its application.
    
    As an aside I would refer you to that ‘fount of all knowledge’ Wikipedia on D-K:
    
    “The effect, or Dunning and Kruger’s original explanation for the effect, has been challenged by mathematical analyses and comparisons across cultures.

    Not sure what you’re arguing here but on the face of it, what you are explaining appears to defy the second law of thermodynamics.
    
    CO2 particles absorb and re-radiate energy at certain frequencies, many of those frequencies overlap with far more common H2O particles. Also it appears the CO2 behaviour has a saturation point.
    
    Thus far, since the 90’s we have a litany of failed environmental predictions, and a host of “Green measures” which are for the most part more environmentally damaging than increased CO2 itself.
    
    The only measurable outcome from increased CO2 has been a greening of the planet.
    
    Notwithstanding that, no one has explained how an increase in our winter minimum temperature of a couple of degrees is going to harm NZ.

      Why don’t you read again the explanation I offered in the simplest words I could. The atmosphere is not saturated with CO2 where the CO2 radiates to space – I would have thought that was tautological.
      
      At the level that happens the air is very dry. And wrong anyway, CO2 is radiating at some wavelengths not overlapped by H2O. That is why the satellites show Earth losing less energy at those wavelengths now there is more CO2.
      
      That’s the trouble with you clueless clots on kiwibog. You’re so full of yourselves you can’t learn the basic established science from reliable sources.

  Marginally in La Nina still.
  Out of interest I still cant fathom out why Dam levels are low in NZ as South Island has had copious amount of rain and assumed North as well which is consistant with La Nina in past year.
  Much same as Eastern seaboard Queensland and N. NSW etc.
  A very good Barometer in NZ is when Seals start dying off and blamed on Fisherman and the likes but is actually water temps and lack of bait fish and the like.
  Yep fascinating stuff which science and meteorology reigns supreme .

    As I understand it there are (temporary) problems with gas supply. So the generators take more hydro. The NZ hydro system is basically run-of-the-river, and relative to demand, the amount of storage in the lakes is not a lot. The generators still have to up the coal burned as well.
    
    BTW the current gas supply issues have nothing to do with the fact that no new offshore permits are being issued. Supply from this source (if it happened) would be years away.

Pike River Mine families spent a chilling morning protesting at the gates to the mine, calling on the workers there to down tools and stand with them against the Government’s decision to permanently seal the mine.
“The agency ute that’s come up here has just turned around and gone away again so our journeys started,” said Bernie Monk. … “They’re entombing our men and I know they don’t want to do that so it’s time for them to stand beside us and down tools and make sure they don’t do it.” – Newshub

The World Socialist Web Site carried another lengthy article asking –
What is the New Zealand government trying to bury in Pike River mine?
and mentions –
Electrical engineer Richard Healey, who has worked with some of the Pike families for the past two years to investigate the disaster, revealed leaked documents and video footage last year, showing that hundreds of cubic metres of concrete were poured into the mine down a narrow ventilation shaft. The concrete flooded the so-called “fresh air base,” an area that included emergency equipment and where any survivors of the first explosion might have congregated. [2]

Documents on the Pike River Agency’s website – orders for the materials used and specialist Australian staff hired to use what apparently was an expanding grout – would seem to confirm that this use of “concrete” did occur.

The Royal Commission Report states scans taken down the slimline-ventilation shaft immediately after the first explosion show an open safety equipment storage container in the “fresh air base”, but scans after subsequent explosions revealed roof fall from the just-adjacent drift had spilled into the fresh air base to cover the container. This is now supposedly “flooded” with concrete, and depending on the amount poured down the shaft, the expanding grout may also cover the west end of the inner roof fall nearest the mine workings, further hindering any planned access to the main ventilation fan roadway.

For some unexplained reason, neither those advocating further entry, nor those opposing it, mention the possibility that not only may the remains of any miners, thought to have gathered in or near the fresh air base, may be now further entombed in grout (presumably also under a layer of roof fall coal), but an excess of it may also overlay a portion of the roof fall, so belying the Families’ petition statement: “We’re just two piles of coal from answers. Two piles of coal from finding out what really caused the Pike River tragedy”

Electrical engineer Richard Healey seems to be the initiating force behind the relatively recent obsession to reach the main ventilation fan. If the Families place so much faith in his expertise regarding the fan, why not also pay attention to Healey’s revelations about the “concrete” and where that may now rest?

One trusts the judge, still considering the legal challenge lodged by the Families, is aware this also.

An Otago Daily Times article [3] details six boreholes planned to be drilled into the Pike River Mine workings for the Police investigation –
The fifth borehole will look at the fan, including a seal [4]. A sixth, at the bottom of the AMB heading, cannot progress due to the geography on the surface, but police intend to deploy new imaging equipment down a previous borehole that is open, giving them a line of sight back out of the mine towards the rockfall at the end of the drift.
This last drill hole, apparently already in place, may reveal where some of the “concrete” lies.
The sooner that is looked at, the more helpful it may be.

To put an end to some of the misery, how long will it take to access this last drill hole, which is already in place?

And while so much now is made of permanently sealing the mine, I read somewhere that whatever seal is to be used, it can actually be reversed if absolutely necessary. Not being able to find that reference again, I wonder if this is true?

But then, as well as sealing the mine, the Commission evidence is already sealed – for 100 years – The reason for the hundred year embargo is outlined in an email from the Department of Internal Affairs Te Tari Taiwhenua: “Access restrictions of 100 years have been placed on submissions and evidence to protect personal privacy as well as to maintain implied and existing undertakings in relation to confidentiality”. [5]
Really? Still? After spending near $50 million of taxpayer funding on entering the drift?

Stuff article on the possibility of electric aircraft. There is so, so much unjustified optimism in this piece, it’s hard to know where to start.

First of all, the aircraft being talked about (the proposed ES-19) doesn’t exist yet, it’s still in development. There is no guarantee the aircraft will be ready on time (the airline, Sounds Air, is talking about a 2026 in-service date), it might not meet the performance being aimed for, or it might never eventuate at all.

But lets be generous assume the aircraft is available on time and with the promised specs. That means an aircraft carrying 19 people with a maximum range of 400 km. That’s a pretty niche aircraft. The range means longer domestic routes (like Auckland to Christchurch) are out. And while it could do routes like Nelson to Wellington, or Wellington to Christchurch, the problem here would be insufficient passenger capacity. The ATR72’s Air New Zealand uses on most domestic routes carry 68 people, and the A320’s used between the main centers carry 170. An aircraft carrying just 19 people is only going to make sense for the smallest destinations (which will probably be economically marginal to start with).

And that neatly segues into the next major issue – charging infrastructure. The spokesman for Sounds Air said “airports serviced by electric aircraft will need to cover the cost of chargers, each worth about $500,000, plus installation.” Putting aside the breathtaking arrogance of demanding another company make huge capital investments solely for your benefit, exactly how many small airports would even be able to spend this much money if they wanted to? Again, this is an aircraft that only carries 19 people. It is overwhelmingly going to be flying to/from the smallest airports. And somehow they are just supposed to soak a half a million dollar infrastructure upgrade? Yeah, right.

  Agree with your post. Just as a small technical point. The maximum number of passengers that an airliner flying a scheduled service may have without a flight attendant is 19. Any more than this and a flight attendant is required. Thus it was always quite likely that the first all electric airliner will be of this type.
  
  The 19 seat rule is an FAA requirement and it is fairly similar for other similar authorities.

  Hybrids might work regionally, if the weight issues can be solves. Engine running at most efficient constant speed and batteries handling peaks. Works for short flights (lots of ups and downs), but long-haul still unattractive.

  As with cars, the real question is not whether the plane can reach it’s destination, but how long it will have to wait there to refuel.
  
  Electric planes will not be able to recharge in the same time it takes for a conventional jets to offload, refuel, onboard and take off.
  
  This is especially true in smaller centre’s where there is no refueling and the turn around can be pretty short.
  
  I predict airlines will buy one to keep polished for photo ops.

I read that there have been 185M cases of Covid19 reported and 4M deaths attributed to Covid19 to date.

So with some 180M survivors over 18 months you would think that statistically it would be easy to tell if you can catch it more than once and if your antibodies protect you from the various strains.

Hopefully we will be seeing the results of studies soon.

We appear to have forgotten this truth here in New Zealand. Apparently under our new abortion regime, brought in by our wonderfully kind Prime Minister, babies who survive late term abortions are just left to die. This happened recently when a baby was aborted by being induced and then left to die. We wouldn’t even treat an animal this way.

Some things dear readers might want to note:

Codeine is a “pro drug” what that means is that the codeine molecule itself is inactive and has to be converted to the active pain reliever in the human body by liver enzymes. So far so good.

In **most** humans 5 – 10 % of the codeine is metabolized (o-demethylyation for the detail tragic, like me) by the enzyme CYP2D6 to morphine. Thats where the pain killing comes from. Then its removed by glucuronidation (UGTs, my favourite enzymes).

Note how I said **most**. There is a genetic difference (“polymorphism”) in CYP2D6 that means about 30% of the population are “poor metabolizers”. This means that codeine-to-morphine transformation doesn’t happen in any functional sense [the conversion is so low that meaningful levels of morphine do not accumulate in the human body] –> codeine is NOT a functional drug for these people and they get no pain relief. Yes indeed, I just told you that for up to 30% of the population (depending on ethnicity, these genetic differences are different with ethnicity) codeine doesn’t work.

For a very small percent of the population (varies with ethnicity from 2-8%, mother of Pharma is one) they have the opposite enzyme polymorphism, they are called super metabolizers. For these people a couple of low dose (15 mg) morphine tabs and they like “Wooooooo”. For these people codeine is a great pain reliever.

For everyone else, so we’re talking ~60-65% of the population, its only so-so. This being said for the ~65 of the population that functionally convert codeine to morphine (plus the 2-8% super converters) the following is true: morphine is not good for bone pain [its a long story to do with the receptors it binds to, called opioid receptors] and gives little relief (this includes teeth Mr Grant), but is good for soft tissue pain. Also, opioids in all their glory and a substantial interaction with alcohol… it doesn’t affect the pain relief, but it can interact at the level of the brain stem and suppress breathing reflexes… too much codeine (easy to do, its only a mild pain reliever) coupled with a Friday afternoon bender can result in suffocation and death. As does far too often.

If I was on the advisory committee I would have made it limited quantity and pharmacist [signature in the register] only, not necessarily prescription. That being said, the old days of being able to buy boxes and boxes of codeine under multiple brand names and generic presentations were dangerous. There are a couple of studies out of the UK NHS adverse drug reaction reporting service showing deaths caused by the codeine-alcohol interaction were likely under-recorded by an order of magnitude.

I was going to send this to $stuff in rebuttal, but I think I’ll just park it here for thinking people.

    Yes Greg, it is not uncommon for super metabolizers (if indeed your mum was) to have codeine addiction problems – they convert the codeine to morphine super fast and in high amounts, so they do experience a “high”. Trust she is resting peacefully now.

    Pseud is in phenethylamine class. There are a number of other drugs in the class but they all have varying efficacy and inter individual differences are high. It’s restricted here as well b/c of the meth problem.

      PS @Rocky you’re not wrong in thinking that Pseudoephedrine is the best of the lot. You used to be able to buy the generic pure form OTC from a pharmacist instead of buying the branded stuff, they’d simply count it out for you.
      
      I would add that instead of a knee jerk ban, NZ would have been better restricting it to Pharmacist only and small amounts (as I suggested above for codeine). Canada and the UK have been very successful with this approach to codeine and Pseud. Having said that, it’s SHOCKINGLY easy to make meth from Pseud. Audrey Young wrote a good piece on the recent history of the National Party. And of the more recent attempts to stifle National MP’s leaking, Judith’s demand for loyalty, and so forth.
I see a couple of problems with that, firstly that Judith is expecting something of her caucus which her career indicates she did not do herself in terms of loyalty and at the same time was a leaker. She also does not endure public popularity, 15% of National Supporters prefer Jacinda in the PM stakes. Audrey used the word “misfits” as her close team.
I don’t know if Audrey was writing from a tongue-in-cheek position but it seemed so. Also, she suggested that Judith had her caucus to the point where they would nark on one another for perceived disloyalty quoting the apparent demise of TM as an example for something he said about the newest National MP. Does that mean if anyone were to say that another National MP had a fat arse or bad breath they would be gone?
In another article that focused on Labour’s reticence of revealing a longer-term Covid plan as Britain and Aussie have done to see how it unfolds before releasing uncertainty on New Zealand indicates a longer game than that which Audrey wrote about in terms of National. Short-sightedness or frustration?

So, the thrust of He Puapua breaches Article 3, making the split again into Maori versus the Crown – and the Crown apparently represents the rest of the New Zealand population, but doesn’t appear to consult us.
So the response now to He Puapua, in some cases, is as racist as He Puapua itself is.

As much as some people dislike the Treaty, it was working – He Puapua won’t.

US Culture War update …

The Woke War continues in the American state of Virginia with statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson taken down in Charlottesville this weekend. Then the moves were heightened by removal of a memorial unrelated to the US Civil War.

Four years ago opponents stormed the town to prevent the statues coming down.

They were removed on Saturday morning, and four hours after a special meeting of the Charlottesville City Council, down came another historical statue, this time related to a famous expedition in the creation of the United States.

This was a group statue of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Sacagawea. Lewis and Clark famously crossed America’s newly acquired Louisiana Purchase then continued to the Pacific. Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman interpreter who travelled with them.

Nikuyah Walker, the city’s first Black female mayor, said in a speech near the monuments that their removal “is one small step closer to the goal of helping Charlottesville, Virginia, and America, grapple with the sin of being willing to destroy Black people for economic gain.”

Meanwhile, a Virginia Tech, a state university with 40,000 students and staff, a free-speech group is fighting the university’s move to introduce five measures it calls anti-bias policies.

The students are seeking legal delays in the policies’ introduction until their case is heard.

The filing of their law suit came one week after the university denounced contents of a right-wing club’s leaked group chats as “homophobic, racist, ableist, and misogynistic.”

Online chats of a club are alleged to have invoked conspiracies about the Obamas and to havee poked fun at transgendersand gay culture.

They were sent to student conduct offices for review, according to a university official.

Yesterday, I read the following article.

As a graduate of the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and started reading for my degree in 1979, I was dumbfounded that that the identified exam cheats were not failed their degrees outright.

When I started reading for my Commerce degree, it was a requirement for a student to pass Terms before you could sit the end of year final. Terms comprised of passing 2 terms tests, attending 75% of tutorials, and submitting 75% of assignments.

Then 75% of the final grade was based on the end of year exam. below 50% was a fail. If the student failed half of a full years course, the student was out.

In the the late 70s/early 80s, the student body was against this “archahic regime ” of the Commerce Faculty. By 1982, the Commerce Faculty had moved in line with the demands from the outsiders. The irony was, the failure rate rose, as students got lazy, and were trying to do a bare minimum for the end of year final.

Now, because of COVID and “cheque book education”, the University has moved to “on-line examinations”. The result, cheating and the University permitting cheats to pass examinations.

This is a fraud on two counts.
1. It says the student has passed the course, when it is doubtful that the student has and have a valid qualification or understanding of the course subject matter; and
2. It is a fraud for these students/graduates to present themselves to prospective employers as being able prove they are truly qualified as Commerce graduates.

What is even more concerning is the way in which this example devalues the degrees of previous Auckland University graduates, and the worth of graduate degrees from Auckland University as a whole. Over the past 15 years we have seen NZ University slide down the rankings of international universities, when the University is conferring degrees to exam chaeats, the University Senate can only expect for the University’s reputation to slide into obscurity.

As a BCom graduate of the University of Auckland, I am embarrassed by this and will not employ any recent graduates from the University of Auckland Business School.

Other than what was written in the linked NewHub article, these are my opinions.

Now I am by no means either mental health expert nor an authority on illegal substances but … I did imbibe a tad when younger and actually had a friend lose his mind on acid. I don’t think you need to be that bright to see that the increase in mental health issues are paralleled by an increase in drug use.

Medical experts already use low dose LSD in various applications but declassifying will lead to increased consumption and I believe more mental health issues. Did we not lose another young person to synthetic cannabis last week?

Maybe talk with an insurance underwriter to see the linkage between drug consumption and depression.

Some discussion, above, of the covid vaccine seems a little odd.
Is it not true, that –
• If you are fully vaccinated and then are infected, the resultant illness should not be as severe as it would be if you are not vaccinated (when it can be life threatening, particularly for elderly with certain already existing conditions)

• If you are fully vaccinated and then are infected, the viral load you may pass on to another is supposedly reduced.

• If you are not vaccinated and then are infected, you face the full effect of whatever the virus may do to you.

Is not “herd immunity” simply as dependent on who you stand next to – sheer chance, as in the case of the Australian covid-positive tourist who moved freely around Wellington, but miraculously did not infect anyone.
Or my next door neighbour, at present in Melbourne, who could conceivably bring the virus back with him to be only metres away, or closer as he usually shakes hands on return. In that case “herd immunity” has nothing to do with it – just sheer luck.

And is time a factor? If the Australian covid-positive tourist, by contact, infected a bystander who then immediately infected you, the vaccination or not to the in-between bystander only means anything if that person has time to develop a lesser illness or lower viral load to pass on to the next person?

So, sheer luck seems to be what has so far prevented Ardern (and the rest of us) from having to witness the decimation of particularly Maori and Pacific Island people (with medical, vocational and community covid-complementary conditions), as such luck appears to be what so avoids our following Peru, Lombardy in Italy, and in particular the Pacific Island Community in Los Angeles.

It sounds like someone or something in the far North community of Ahipara as there is a fire bug onthe loose their with the total of arson attacks in the last seven months totaling 12 and the Police are asking the public for help.
The remote location is a disadvantage for fire crews as there is only one way inand out and it’s a four wheel drive terrain not made for 13 ton fire trucks.

Opposition leader Judith Collins says the Government is continuing to make policy announcements it never campaigned on and ordinary Kiwis are being left out of important decisions being made by the Government.

“The He Puapua report contains recommendations for fundamental changes to our legal, constitutional, and democratic governance arrangements. Changes like separate health and justice systems, separate RMA rules, and separate electoral arrangements. … and changing the Treaty?
Collins could have pointed out that He Puapua aspirations also fundamentally change Article 3 of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is no small item to leave out as policy when you run even a Cover-based Election.

Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson has also said the time is right for the country to develop a plan that advocates for Māori in real and “meaningful ways”.
“This must reflect New Zealand and it’s an important conversation for us to all have together as a nation,” he said earlier this month.

If “it’s an important conversation for us to all have together“, why then Willie Jackson, are you consulting Maori “stakeholders” for six months, then the rest of us next fucking year?

“As we have previously said, He Puapua is not Government policy nor the basis of a declaration plan. Instead, it is a starting point for discussion.” – Jackson
So, what actual document, agenda or presentation is Jackson offering Maori “stakeholders” for discussion? Where is a copy?

  Oh dear, their own people don’t understand the Maori programs. Does snowing the rest of NZ with Te Reo help any more? I’m hearing kids wanting to drop out of school because of the alienation Te Reo is causing.
  
  We didn’t ask for it, their elders previously knew teaching Te Reo was unwise and not useful for a modern society. Its use is practically limited to the Marae for specialist purposes such as considering old land titles gained through battle.
  
  There are evidently tribal power issues over speaking rights and territories which is impacting all. A new generation of activists seems to be on the rise. Let them not walk over us. These people gain ascendancy because they are natural scrappers and warriors. Their history is a documentation of fights–the winner takes all. This fits well with the Labour Bully Class but they are more skilled and pulled the wool already over Labour eyes.

I’ve watched TVNZ news several times over the last fortnight (I live abroad), and have been struck by two things: the laughable wokeness of Simon Dallow and his fellow travellers, and the apparent renaming of the country formerly know as United Kingdom. According to Dallow and their UK (sorry, England) based correspondent, the UK is now called England. Boris Johnson is the PM of England, England now has xxx cases of COVID, etc.

What’s that all about? Are TVNZ’s ‘news’ storytellers really that stupid? Or has the UK changed its name, and in which case, what do the people of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland think about that?

Or is someone trying to make a silly political point?

Good article Kerre. Highly paid academics experimenting on small business owners and a Government that does not understand small business owners is certainly true in my view. If kiwis are prepared to for their latte to go from $4 to $6 overnight, sure a cafe will pay a higher hourly rate . Everything will go up in price with wage inflation. The Academics and the Government don’t see it that way. They want employers to engage in a price war within their sectors to maintain prices and reduce their already small profit margins, especially so in hospitality. This is SOCIALISM. Covid has provided the Government and their highly paid academic advisors the ideal platform to act on their redistribute wealth ideology.

  People seem to have no problem forking out twice as much for a glass of beer that takes no skill to put in the glass at a bar or Eden Park. A similar beer can be bought at the supermarket for a fraction of the price.

According to a report in Stuff, California has just recorded the highest temperature on earth in more than 100 years. The highest was 2.6 degrees higher than the latest high and, presumably, CO2 levels were much lower then than they are now.

  Chinese steel is shit – recycled without much of new steel component. The company I work for will not have steel from China. If so, it gets sent back to the importers at their cost, they have been notified on paper.

    Yep it might conform to the alloy specification in terms of fractions of alloying elements, but is typically chock full of weakening inclusions (grit, oxide lumps etc) that wreck its strength – a result of recycling old metal into the mix. Even chinese companies use imported metals when quality matters.
