Last night I ‘met’ with a few long-time friends via Zoom. There was some excitement at the prospect of a ‘Level’ change being announced today. The things we will be able to do again were enthused over at length. It was a saddening conversation.

Somehow we have been nudged to accept the notion that fundamental freedoms are an arbitrary dispensation of the state.

Across the world once proud social democracies are descending down the bio-fascism rabbit hole. The ruling elite’s seemingly co-ordinated mantra of ‘3 weeks to flatten the curve’ has turned into threatened, punctuated or continuous multi-year house arrest for billions of people.

In Israel, Pfizer’s global lab rat, the people are discovering that the promise of double jabs to receive passport-assured freedom was a lie as they must now accept jabs continuously if they ever want to participate in civil society.

Not to be out done, our Aussie neighbours have trainee totalitarian leaders who want a slice of the action. Last week the NSW premier addressed her 8.2 million subjects, most of whom have been confined to their home for 9 weeks. Her message should have been chilling for anyone familiar with the history of oppression and genocide. She announced that once 70% of them had been vaccinated then freedom would be returned to the vaccinated alone.

The threat facing society is not a tiny virus, but rather the rapidly metastasizing cancer of bio fascism. Based on our current trajectory, by the time enough people wake up to this illusionist-like performance it will be too late.

  Here’s just some of the absolute insanity happening to our Ozzie cuzzies across the ditch.
  
  1. The government are building quarantine camps.
  
  2. They deployed the army to patrol the streets to lock people inside their homes.
  
  3. Unarmed civilians are shot with rubber bullets for protesting the insane lockdowns.
  
  4. Children are tear gassed by police for being in the protests.
  
  5. Citizens to be forced to download an app with facial recognition and location tracking. Police will require you to send photos of yourself randomly to prove your whereabouts.
  
  If you don’t reply within 15 minutes, police will knock on your door.
  
  6. A new surveillance law allows police to delete, modify and add files on your device and take over social media accounts without a judges warrant.
  
  7. Mothers were fined $1000 for talking with each other outdoors.
  
  8. A man was jailed for 8 months for organizing a protest against the government. He was arrested and sentenced in only 24 hours.
  
  9. Police have emergency powers to:
  
  – Break into any land, building or vehicle with any force necessary
  
  – Order people undergo medical exams, tests or treatments.
  
  – Prohibit people’s movement.
  
  – Put people in quarantine.
  
  – Force people to give info.
  
  10. Police patrolling children’s playgrounds to make sure kids aren’t playing.
  
  11. Don’t like any of this? Citizens aren’t even allowed to leave the country.
  
  If it can happen there, it can definitely happen here in New Zealand as well. So speak out now while you still can.

    I haven’t got time to go through each item, but (6) is a load of crap. Police access and monitoring of individual’s communication privacy can only be undertaken if:
    1. it is vital to a criminal investigation and
    2. A warrant has been obtained to do so.
    AFIK, we have the same laws applying to investigation/monitoring of persons deemed to be of criminal interest/intent.

      That used to be their law, it has been changed very recently with the Surveillance Legislation Amendment (Identify and Disrupt) Bill 2020 which gives police the powers to modify, add to, copy, or delete data to “frustrate the commission of serious offenses online.” but does not require the formal charging of a crime to do so. Presumably this could easily be used under future hate speech laws.

        The Bill has been passed as of 24 Aug by both houses.         The data disruption warrant is only one option, the other is the network actvity warrant, which is a broad catch all, it does not apply to an individual, rather a network.
        
        In particular:
        
        Existing warrants, such as computer access warrants in the Surveillance Devices Act, allow the collection of evidence, rather than intelligence. Network activity warrants allow agencies to target criminal networks about which very little is known to discover the scope of the network and its offending. Network activity warrants provide a discovery tool that can be used in conjunction with other investigatory powers to further a single investigation.
        
        They are not warrants the way we would traditionally think of them. They could easily be applied to a Facebook group as a network, say an anti lockdown protest facebook group.

    Australia is a federation of states over which the Federal govt has no control of these health issues.
    
    From what I read the Feds oppose the Draconian methods used by some of the state Premiers (the equivalent of our Governors here in the US) who seem to be way out of control – way worse than California and Michigan, for example.
    
    However, once 80% vax rate is hit the Feds have apparently threatened to withhold Federal money from those states which continue the pogrom against civil liberty and freedom.

      NSW has been in hard lock-down for about 6 weeks I think. VIC is in a hard lock-down (including night curfew) and have had this shite for many many months on end. The only reprieve there was summer and autumn basically. WA is a much like NZ, the draw bridges are up in a big way. SA has had a few bouts of brief lock-downs I think. TAS has been quiet and pretty much lock-down free I think (it is a reasonably sparsely populated island after all). It now appears NSW is going to be drip fed small and gradual easings of their lock-downs once 80% double vaccinations have been achieved. VIC has promised some easings once 70% of first vaccinations have been achieved but knowing D Andrews those easings will likely be insignificant and infuriating.

    If forced to be tracked on an app, buy a separate phone and ONLY use it for that app. Load it with all the crap/spyware/tracking blocking technology that you can.

    That would be for where you are told to isolate (say. at home) for 2 weeks because you test positive. Because for so many bozos it’s tempting to “just go for a quick drive up to the bottle-o” and so on and because of the numbers of people involved, this is a solution.

    Australia was the subject of international mirth a couple of weeks back when the premier of my native Victoria, Daniel Andrews, appeared to tell citizens they must leave their mask on even if they are ‘getting on the beers’, as we say in these parts.
    
    Yes, Australia may have made international headlines for its rather tyrannical response to Covid – for firing rubber bullets at protesters, shooting rescue dogs and deploying the bomb squad to deal with teenagers at the beach. But, as Andrews reminds us, this tyranny is often taking an absurd form.

    You’re thinking of genocide while looking back at the aftermath of a past horror. But how did it start? According Gregory H. Stanton, the former Research Professor in Genocide Studies and Prevention at the George Mason University, stage one of all genocides is the Classification stage: “The differences between people are not respected. There is a division of ‘us’ and ‘them’ – German and Jew, Hutu and Tutsi.” Or vaccinated and unvaccinated.
    
    Stage two is the Symbolisation stage: “To the classification, names or symbols are used to distinguish between people such as forcing Jewish people to wear the yellow star (and other symbols) under Nazi rule and the blue scarf for people to identify those the Khmer Rouge planned to murder.” Or vaccine passports to participate in normal life.

      No-one (apart from you) is suggesting that we are already on the slippery slope to genocide.
      
      Yes, lockdowns have restrictions, and yes I am getting tired of this one. However, I don’t ascribe to the idea that our governments (whether it would left as in NZ or right as in NSW) are on a slippery slope as you seem to think.
      
      In fact what I see is an understanding that this blanket approach is not sustainable in the long term. Hipkins has noted that, so did Judith on Q & A yesterday.
      
      Given that no likely government in Australia or NZ is just going to take a “let it rip” strategy, they are clearly looking for alternatives when the great bulk of the population is vaccinated. Of course I appreciate you are opposed to the vaccination strategy. Well, that is your right, you don’t have to get one. But most people will, I reckon between 80% and 90% of the eligible population.
      
      The real issue is what happens when most people are vaccinated, especially if there is an outbreak that is a definable cluster? Do you have a limited area (suburb) quarantine with decent monitoring?

        All the notable experts in the UK, including the guy that led the Oxford vaccine development are clear that is impossible. The vaccines are very poor at preventing transmission. If New Zealand opens up, it will spread in the community. We will all get COVID. I am not being hyperbolic about that. It is based on looking at the emerging evidence about the virus AND the efficacy of vaccines since Day 1 of the pandemic.
        
        To repeat, Jacinda’s mantra that we will be able to “stamp out” clusters of COVID infection like measles is delusional.
        
        The vaccines are great – they will greatly reduce serious illness and death, but they will NOT stop COVID becoming endemic across the globe. It is that simple.

        Its not that simple Benedict, say we open up in March, with 80% vacced. What happens to those boarder workers etc who were vacced last March? They probably wont have had an opportunity to get a booster, so the vaccines are way less effective in the areas where they are really needed, like the boarder and healthcare. Ok then, roll out the boosters, by the time that is done everyone else will need one and it will be the end of 2022.
        
        It is just a never ending cycle of importance.

        I am thinking Portugal for decriminalizing Drugs.
        
        Portugal also has one of the highest rates of Vaxs in the world over 83% 1 jab over 76% 2 jabbed.

        Wayne – thank you so much for engaging in debate. It is good to hear the perspective of a former member of Parliament. While I don’t agree that we are on the path to genocide, I do think we have witnessed the massive expansion of the state in a way that is reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984.
        
        Let us look at the objective conditions today and over the last year. Everyone has been confined to their homes. They are under virtual house arrest but have committed no crime. Everyone must account today for where they go and they must sign in. It is a fact that the government wants to know right now where everyone is and where they are shopping and where they are going.
        
        The population has been encouraged to report any of their fellow citizens breaking Covid rules to the police.
        
        The churches are now shut and if Michael Baker has his way will be shut for the indefinite future. The churches were closed last year over Easter, the first time in the history of this nation that Christian believers have not been able to worship together over the most sacred period of the Christian year.
        
        Most people are having their wages paid by the government. Most businesses are being subsidised by the government.
        
        Many other freedoms have been lost including the freedom to go to your own parents funeral.
        
        The Prime Minister appeared on television on a Tuesday and told everyone to go to their homes and stay there. She did not convene Parliament, she did not refer to any act of Parliament, she did it on the authority of herself and the cabinet.
        
        Can you not see that this is a huge expansion of state power? I have never been personally frightened of Covid, a virus from which over 99% of those afflicted recover. I am however deeply concerned about the loss of our liberty. The Prime Minister now believes that freedom is something that she can dispense. In the past we believe that our freedoms came from God. The National party was founded on the basis of freedom. Please remember this as you comment on these issues. Because freedom matters. It matters to those who came before us who built this great country. It matters to us today.

        It is possible that some of the vaccines under development will prove to be significantly superior in preventing spread. The current mRNA vaccines are, at best, a form of treatment to reduce severity, though, depending on the age group, that possibly isn’t a universal advantage.
        
        And note that these vaccines do not prevent serious illness, plenty of people have become seriously ill and even died after being fully vaccinated, but it does appear to reduce one’s probability of developing severe symptoms, especially if over 50 years of age. It may also make it less likely for one to develop any symptoms at all.

As I’ve been concerned about research fraud for 40 years, I wasn’t that surprised as many would be by this figure, but it led me to think that the time may have come to stop assuming that research actually happened and is honestly reported, and assume that the research is fraudulent until there is some evidence to support it having happened and been honestly reported.     I would agree that calling what we have genocide is over-egging the pudding… at the moment… and is unlikely to get all the way there.
    
    However it is certainly a few steps down the path:
    * Classification
    * Symbolisation
    * Discrimination
    * Dehumanisation
    * Organisation
    * Polarisation
    * Preperation
    * Persecution
    * Extermination
    
    Denial doesn’t really count as a step because that’s afterwards.
    
    Of those, at least classification, symbolisation, discrimination, organisation and polarisation are happening to an extent or are proposed for NZ.
    
    Persecution is happening to those that speak out – particularly academics.
    
    I’m not seeing any dehumanisation yet. Nor extermination.

Yet I have family in Melbourne and Queensland and the feedback from them is while the lock downs are frustrating they seem to accept them as being necessary— and they are conservative people.

From Letters to the Editor in today’s Herald

No excuses over attack
Much effort has been made by Jacinda Ardern to persuade Kiwis that the proposed law change may not have prevented the New Lynn terror attack. For every day of her nearly four-year tenure, the PM knew this day was potentially coming and that the law was impotent. It seems ‘S’ was unique among terrorists in terms of the exceptional risk he posed, and the immediacy of that risk. It is clear that police needed a law change to have any hope of detaining ‘S’ lawfully and that Ardern knew that, too, for a considerable period.
A change of a few dozen words in our terrorism law would have given police a fighting chance of arresting ‘S’ and having him convicted and imprisoned before attacking seven innocent people. It seems that police and officials did all they could to bring the matter to the attention of this government but government failed to give police the legal tool they needed.
Ardern’s pleas of frustration and claims of being “gutted” at this predictable incident are deflecting from the real issue. Wringing your hands in public now and taking urgent steps to change the law is simply too little too late. The Labour government, with a clear majority in Parliament, has no excuse for failing all New Zealanders, and especially the victims and their families. Let’s hope they all make a full recovery.

    Judith Collins has been circumspect because she was Minister of Justice and knows exactly how tricky this is. She gave an excellent interview on RNZ on Saturday morning where she explained the position, and offered bipartisan support to the Government in getting the amendments to the terrorism regime passed. An offer the PM appears to have accepted. I have to say I think she (Collins) has handled this extremely well, far better than her performance at the start of he week when Parliament resumed.

    The recent offender is awaiting an appellate court judgement as to whether he stays or goes. It would be opening a big can of worms to seize someone and pack them off in the midst of a trial. That may be justified but watch out for unforeseen side affects.

      I completely agree with you Kev. We cannot (as noted earlier in this comments section) complain about the state taking away fundamental freedoms, then scroll down and advocate for the state to take away fundamental freedoms.
      
      The fundamental freedom here is the right to citizenship and due progress. For the fact that you cannot punish someone for a crime they have not yet committed, there is and should be a a proper process to go through.
      
      Because i am damn sure, once the state has the tools, there is no reason to think they wont over time broaden the scope of those tools and use them in ways that are not flagged or intended today – such as on political groups that the government of the day do not like.

  The agenda , just for a start should include:
  Research into his mothers claim that this madman was radicalised in NZ.
  The truth about the incident itself ,including whether two people were shot as claimed on RNZ,
  The reason the number of victims changed and the hospital number and choices for them.
  How a known terrorist was allowed to walk NZ streets.
  The efficiency of the surveillance.
  How many other potential terrorists are being treated similarly in NZ?
  Plus many other questions.
  Without a proper enquiry any new legislation is going to be flawed!

– in asking “how many times has Samsudeen in fact returned to Sri Lanka”? when subsequent information suggests he arrived in New Zealand in 2011 and has not left the country since. except apparently travelling to Samoa in November 2016 despite being a national security threat on the terror watch list.

A quote in several media articles says –

This seems now to be open to more than one interpretation – her neighbours in Sri Lanka, or neighbours of her son here in New Zealand
Of course. if Samsudeen has not left the country since 2011(except to visit Samoa) this may mean the radicalising neighbours are still here in New Zealand.

  Last night the Government released news that Samsudeen travelled out of NZ to Samoa in 2016.
  
  I’m not sure we are being told everything.

        It refers to an individual who acts by themselves rather than as part of a cell network or coordinated group i.e. 9/11, vehicle bombs, suicide vests etc.
        
        The lone wolf is defined by the number of people involved and the disconnection from distinct organisation structures.

        I did a Coursera course on terrorism 10 years ago. Very interesting!
        The term ‘lone wolf’ was used to describe people – mostly young teenage men, introverted and lacking empathy, socially isolated, often insatiable internet users, commonly seeking out weapons, methods of killing, violent films.
        They lived secret lives. They preferred to act alone, rather than with a group – even though they had similar beliefs. They ‘programmed’ themselves, and equipped themselves with weapons – and planned to create fear in other by using them. Groups didn’t want them – they were too inclined to follow their own path and put the rest of the group at risk by exposing their existence.
        Parents were usually completely unaware of their child’s obsessions.
        Yes, other terrorist cells may well know of these people – word gets around, but unless they were prepared to join in the group plans, they were left alone.
        Nobody claimed them, and apparently they were not all Muslem. Some of them outgrew their obsession, and some were discovered and given support where possible.
        So: ‘lone wolf’ has a very specific meaning in the terrorist vocabulary which unfortunately has become dulled by popular usage.

      The critical issue here is that the mother’s comments give a clue to both how he was radicalised (not in the classic isolated way, online etc) , but due to the influence of others.
      
      So our concern now is who are those “others”.

  I lived in the UK for some years in the late 1980s and there were many such events (pre-Twitter, obviously). One I recall is when a train broke down just outside a village and the word was it would be a couple of hours before they would get underway again.
  
  A conductor safely led the 20 or so passengers off the train, down a country lane and to a pub where he bought everyone a drink. He then safely led them back onto the train, turning what would have been a frustrating couple of hours into an enjoyable excursion.

  Not long ago I was waiting at a bus stop opposite a Salvation Army op shop in the weekend. It was a revelation. In the course of about 25 minutes 2 cars pulled up and added boxes, bags and bits of random stuff to an already large untidy pile.
  
  The reason it was untidy soon became quite clear. A car arrived, 3 large people got out and started rooting through the piles, and not at all tidily. Can’t mention ethnicity. Then a guy on a bike turned up and did similar, not quite so untidily. He was wearing a helmet though. I called the police but my bus arrived before they did..

I continue to hear all this discussion about Immigration and Terrorism laws needing to be changed. These changes may well be required, yet the general discussion in the media still ignores the major point as to how a terrorist attack was allowed to happen.

The above link is for the bail laws in New Zealand. They clearly state that anyone charged with serious violent offending does not need to be bailed. It also states that with any special circumstances an accused offender does not need to be bailed.

To attack and break a Corrections Officer’s jaw is a serious violent offending. This was not a potential act with which the judiciary needed to consider, it’s an act which the man had already been charged with. The laws are black and white. It is a monumental judicial failure.

  My understanding is he was was charged with crime(s) that have finite prison terms. Ten years or whatever.
  So he could be kept in prison for that length of time and let out without restrictions.
  Then what.
  The bloke was a ticking time bomb.
  Laws could be changed to deal with his particular case, but of course they could be used elsewhere to detain people whose jib society doesn’t like the cut of.

    I dare say that given he was on the front page of the New Zealand Herald on 16 August and the Government were already working to have him deported, he would have been gone by the end of his 10 years. He showed no remorse and refused to engage with rehabilitative services, so he likely would never have stepped foot in NZ as a free man again.

        Neither Bridges or Collins has the charisma or broad appeal to carry the swing voters in an election against Ardern. So taking part in any in-fighting between the two of them is like the proverbial two bald men arguing about a comb.
        
        National is reaping the pain from 5-10 years of poor candidate recruitment. That is what needs to be reversed (although likely won’t be given Peter Goodfellow is still there leading the selecting). You’d think they would have learned from watching Labour wander aimlessly through the desert after Helen Clark left … but no.
        
        A smart organised party would have recruited and brought through a charismatic candidate in the 2014 or 2017 elections. But look at the talent puddle we got instead.

        To clarify my earlier comment … National tends to be able to recruit lots of solid reliable managerial types (think Bill Birch, Bill English, other people not called Bill etc) who make excellent *Cabinet ministers*. National nearly always has a better Cabinet line-up than Labour can manage.
        
        But National seems to struggle to find charismatic leaders who can energise the 20% of the electorate who span the centre. Key did it. Perhaps Muldoon had that cross-appeal, but in a different era and time that’s gone now. But Bolger, Shipley, English, Bridges, Collins … they’re not leaders that evoke a strong positive emotional response. They’re slow bowlers you’d bring on at first change, not natural right-hand quicks for the new ball. (Not intended as a criticism … I’m well aware I wouldn’t be any good at that either).

Since last Friday’s heinous attack on innocent folk going about their shopping, the MSM has been fill of what Ardern was personally doing in order to prevent this attack. If you read all the BS the media are pumping out you would think Ardern is our government and only she does anything.
Then I thought, where is the Minister of Immigration, were is the Minister of Police and where is the Minister of Justice – All missing from interviews, yet their portfolios are all heavily implicated in this attack.
Given the amount of cock-ups over the last few weeks in regard to Covid, and now this attack, it is obvious Ardern has been put into ‘protection’ as Robertson with all his bluff and bullshit is fronting the interviews and spinning like a top.
A very dear friend in Toronto contacted me over the weekend after hearing of the attack in Auckland and made a very insightful comment about our PM, that was ‘she is a left-wing piece of work, a master wordsmith & a practiced deflector’; which I thought summed Ardern up perfectly.

Dissident council says Govt has offered it $90m to participate in water reforms
… Whangārei and the Far North have both now voted to walk away from the Government’s big Three Waters reforms, and neighbouring Kaipara District Council last week passed a strongly-worded motion criticising the water plans.

This morning, Whangārei mayor Sheryl Mai has provided Newsroom a report her council commissioned from global economic consultants Castalia. She says it debunks Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta’s claims that amalgamating the water services into four big regional authorities would save money.

The findings are of national significance, she argues. “The report shows the so-called savings promoted by Government are unlikely to occur, which means the reforms are likely to produce poorer outcomes for most New Zealanders.”

In what could drive a big wedge between the country’s 67 local councils and the Government, if confirmed, Mai says the Government has offered Whangārei – the loudest critic of the reforms – an extra $90m financial sustainability payment to sign up. [1]

While the Ardern Labour Government struggle to define “hate speech”, and now “terrorism, faith, culture, religion and individual”, perhaps they should look at exactly what “bribery” and “corruption” mean as well.

Most “honest” and “integrous” Government yet – foutaise!
And “transparent”? – well, perhaps, Yes … you can see right through them

  What happens if some councils walk away from 3 waters? Especially if they insist on running referenda to get public OK or not. Would that crash the scheme or will some councils be ringfenced and look after their own.
  
  Seems like many councils want to test the local waters, so to speak, and in order to go out to their residents they will need a lot more information on costs and benefits. Forcing 3 Waters through could easily end up with efficient councils subsidising the inefficient – never an attractive proposition for the former but different situation completely for the latter.

  The 3 waters will be going ahead. Even if all the country’s councils either ask for a “slow-down” or tell Mahuta they don’t want a bar of it, she will mandate the change. She has been given the chance on many occassions to deny she will, and has avoided answering every time. The reason for the change is to vest control of the nation’s water into a “co-governance” model of 50/50 maori control.
  
  There is no financial advantage of these reforms, there will be no change in the water quality, and there are no forecasts for the costs to the consumer of the changes. NONE. But the changes will still go ahead as will the changes to Local Government. Standby for forced amalgamations of Councils, mandatory maori “co-governance” of same, and most people will stand by and accept it all.

      Not so JerJer re the ads. Local Government NZ protested about the ads early on, but they continued and I saw one just before the TV news at 6pm a couple of days ago. The issue ain’t a dead duck – it will be mandated. The South Island view is one of “slow down”, but this Govt knows there are some basic things it wants to change before being tossed out. 3 waters and Local Govt reform, both entailing maori co-governance, are two of them.

      Jerjer – Noticed that the ads are not running on the telly any more.
      Actually the ads are still running, but some in Maori with English subtitles, which may show two things –
      
      1 – a change in tact on the “3 Waters” deal, and
      2 – how it is near impossible, in respect to learning Maori or probably any other language, to split your focus to relate the spoken word to the subtitles or vice versa when a moving picture fills the screen anyway.

As a ratepayer in Wellington I can’t work out who would be the least incompetent to run the water infratsructure in this coolest little decaying capital in the world. I’m leaning towards the City Council – but in no way should that be seen as an endorsement of their capability.

  Havelock North was an engineering error resulting in ‘dirty’ paddock water entering the artesian system.
  The fault (engineering) should have be recognised and corrected.

    It is not only the media that refers to the Havelock North. The DIA and LGNZ as well as the Government all say that the Havelock North failure was the reason that these reforms are under way. The failure was one of the regulator – the Public Health Authority that last took any action regarding water quality in 1956. Does anyone believe any regulator – whether it has a maori name or not – will do any better than any of the other raft of regulators who have failed in their jobs. No need to look further than the Electricity Authority for the answer to that.

      The Guardian is merely reporting that a big study has been “withdrawn” because of shonky not very well fabricated data and summaries pasted/altered from press releases. I’m not sure if this study was part of the Therapeutics meta-analysis.
      
      It really isn’t one study versus another.
      
      I have a better-than-amateur statistical background. I read the Therapeutics paper. They used stats I have never heard of and backed them up with plots I have never seen before. I’m sure they are valid, but it’s a bit strange when this is what it takes.
      
      There is a basic principle in looking at the results of trials. If the effect is large there is pretty much always a simple plot/table that clearly shows it. If you have to tease the effect out with fancy stats this may not be so.

        I have to admit, i didnt notice an I squared in there, and it is pretty reasonable not to know what one is. I have come across them in meta-analysis before, but did have to go an look up how they are calculated.

And other “trials’ of therapeutics that were clearly designed with treatment protocols intended to produce null results (to manufacture FUD antitherapeutic headlines).         “Objective” (of a person or their judgement) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.
        
        While Ivermectin may not be a miracle cure there is enough evidence out there to say it may have some therapeutic benefits which in my humble opinion is a fairly “objective” way to look at it.

      No I disagree Steve Otto. Muttonbird is correct when he suggests that using unproven animal remedies is not recommended practice. True, he didn’t articulate it hugely well. The point does remain that no scientific or medical studies whatsoever exist that prove any kind of efficacy. And when you consider that many people are citing the lack of long term medical studies as good reasons to avoid the vaccines, one does wonder why the same people seem to so quickly jump on Ivermectin as a potential game changer.

    From emerging reports (not newspaper reporting) it seems that in early on cases Ivermectin dosages in SA were not quite right – there is continued discussion (but not disagreement) about how much per kg of body weight, how many doses and at what intervals they should be given.
    The ‘big dodgy’ Indian study was dramatically successful. Do you remember how one week the skies were clouded by the smoke from funeral pyres, and the next, nothing? One of the states took matters in hand, packaged up individual treatment packages of Ivermectin pills, and handed them out to everyone in the state – millions of them (the Indian pharmaceutical industry is very efficient, and cheap) – and suddenly no news, and death rates plummeted
    It seems that physicians are now prescribing Ivermectin for mildly symptomatic patients and getting excellent results within a day or two – even those who require hospitalisation are benefitting.
    Of course, if your immune system is up and running (Vit D3/C/Zinc) you probably won’t get any symptoms at all – and if you don’t have any symptoms, why would you get ‘tested’, and risk getting a false positive result?

  As his mother stated those particular neighbours were in Sri Lanka after he hurt himself in a fall in 2016.
  As you are probably aware his status as a refugee was in the process of being revoked. Traveling back to Sri Lankan around that time probably didn’t help his cause.

Apparently, Speaker Trevor Mallard sent a message, via Twitter, to Radio NZ CEO and editor-in-chief Paul Thomson. Mallard’s tweet asked Thompson to review the story in the link below, in which Dr John Battersby, described by RNZ as “a specialist on terrorism and counter-terrorism at Massey University” said New Zealand’s terrorist laws were “outdated and deficient basically since they were passed.”

Mallard’s beef was that it was a “bad call” to describe Dr Battersby as an expert, as he didn’t have “expertise”. Mallard then added that RNZ’s reputation depended on it. Thompson replied to Mallard that “We will have a look at this”, and the story is still free to view on the RNZ website, without amendment.

So is it acceptable for the Speaker of the House of Representatives to be acting in this way, alerting to CEO of the state-funded media organisation that a story needs to be reviewed? Was the reference to RNZ’s reputation a coded shot across RNZ’s bows? Given that Mallard’s Twitter handle is @SpeakerTrevor, clearly associating with the office he holds in Parliament, should Mallard be more judicious in his social media use?

So many questions…

A nw gantagion model – like all models – is still succeptable to garbage in/garbage out because the controls need to be set for each individual.

No doubt this is a very important breakthrough because it is more “equitable”.

But more than two months later the country is one of the regions worst-hit and hasn’t been able to flatten the curve.
The Guardian: Peru’s coronavirus response was ‘right on time’ – so why isn’t it working.
The usual answers were given – disobeying the rules, etc.
Is the problem one that is also highlighted by the Italians and Pacific Island communities.
While you may reduce the spread outside of the home with lockdown – in high density household situations is it almost guaranteed.

Move over Jacinda, make way for Pene Henare. Over the weekend, he got the interviews on Newshub Nation & Q&A with Jack Lame.

Both shows asked Henare about the poor uptake of vaccine by Maori.

In answer to questions Henare sprinkled liberally the word “equity” (not “equality”). Was this deliberate or merely a nalapropism of an illiterate?

He claimed they gave equity to Maori by moving them to the front of the queue, but he lamented that take up was not good.

By the end of his interviews the viewer was non the wiser.

First we need to know what was he saying, in that:

Equity = an ownership stake in a venture or process; or did he mean

Equality = which means equal access, treatment and outcome.

If he meant the former, he was in effect saying “we gave Maori ownership of the process, and ownership of being first in line, but they dropped the ball”. All of which says the new Maori Health Authority will be a failure too.

As for equality, well as many of us have highlighted, do Maori really want that, or do they just want, free money without restrictions? So much for equity or equality.

  It’s deliberate; part of the modern Far Left’s vocabulary in “challenging power structures” to achieve equality of outcome, the old communist nirvana. Too embarrassing to use such terminology and phrasing any more so new propaganda words and phrases are needed.

Covid test numbers – Was the Guardian (yesterday) wrong?
Since recording 83 cases a week ago, daily case numbers have been 53, 49, 75, 49, 28 and now 20, two days in a row. All of the 20 cases reported on Sunday were in Auckland.

In the past 24 hours, 9,238 people were tested for the virus, a drop of nearly 2000 people from the day prior. A decrease in testing numbers is common during weekends. Analysis shows over 20% of Auckland’s population has been tested for the virus.

04 September 2021 (Saturday) There are 20 new community cases of COVID-19 to report today, all in Auckland.

So of “20 cases, two days in a row” all in Auckland, the quote “9,238 people were tested for the virus, a drop of nearly 2000 people from the day prior” is wrong and the official figures for Auckland were 2,592 against 5,322 the day before, or 48.7% of the day before, less than half, while the cases, 20 each day were the same.

Statistical naïvety would suggest 20 cases yesterday may have been greater if the same number of tests were done as the day before – but there are “lies, damned lies and statistics”, as Mark Twain has said, obviously not about covid, but something else that bugged him.

And this morning on Newshub from RNZ –
Delta outbreak: Officials concerned about sharp drop in COVID-19 testing numbers.
Auckland has been put on notice – get testing if you want to get out of level 4.
But COVID-19 swabbing numbers have been falling so fast in the city, some centres closed early at the weekend.
There were just 2592 tests in Auckland on Saturday, a tenth of the number some days early in the lockdown.
Ministry of Health said it wanted to see about 7000 tests a day to keep an eye out for any undetected COVID-19 cases that could cause the outbreak to keep going.
So far in Auckland that’s not happening.

Te Whānau o Waipareira chief executive John Tamihere said one of its west Auckland centres closed at 1pm yesterday because there was no one to test.
Some days in this outbreak they had been open till 9pm to get the job done.
South Seas Healthcare chief executive Lemalu Silao Vaisola-Sefo said they have gone from about 1400 swabs a day to fewer than 200.

The country could not afford to be complacent about its falling case numbers – 20 for two days in a row – and needed only to look to Victoria who were on the road to beating COVID-19 when cases numbers rose again. [2]

    I wonder about that too. We’ve been at home for weeks now, so probably anyone who had cold or flu symptoms is over whatever they had by now. Maybe there’s just no-one left who feels they need testing.
    
    It’s almost like the MoH is threatening people – if you don’t test, we won’t let you out of lockdown. But if I feel well, why would I go in for testing?

  That’s a real shame. I really liked Peter’s daily opening statements, he clearly spent time thinking about an issue and crafting his message. As usual they were informative and on target. I always looked forward to them. His professionalism and integrity was second to none.
  
  So MagicTalk has lost another star (following Sean Plunket in February and Tony Amos in July). Another star Ryan Bridge looks likely to go to tv’s AM Show. Only Leah Panapa remains with star appeal on the radio station.
  
  Although Danny Watson and Graham Hill are “entertaining” in their own ways, the rest of the revolving “fill-ins” are boring!

A little off topic but a possible opportunity to share with KB’s.

The bill makes it even easier to change sex recorded on the birth certificate.

  A birth certificate records the facts of a birth. If a person changes gender (or race, or name, or where they live) the facts of the birth do not change.
  
  If the attribute of birth gender can be edited, then what about other attributes?
  
  I am not to pleased that my birth certificate records that I was born in South Africa to an alcoholic and a mental patient. I would rather I had been born elsewhere, to different parents who are more consistent with my personality.
  
  Can I please get myself a new birth certificate saying I was born in NZ as a love child of computer greats Grace Hopper and John von Neumann?
  
  If we’re going to make the facts of a birth editable, perhaps we should rather ask what is the point of a birth certificate anyway. Perhaps we should just scrap them.

    It’s positively Orwellian. Sex, as determined by visible sex organs, is, well, visible at birth. It is the lived identity of the child for however many years it takes to reach the point of deciding to change their name and gender presentation.
    This is what actually happened. If someone can’t handle the reality of their own first years of life, are they really in a position to make such huge choices as taking drugs to alter their bodily appearance?

    Having done a lot of work on family history I must be strongly opposed. The record of origin ties in family connection over the centuries. That implicitly carries basic genetic info which may be relevant to the present. It’s important a clear lineage is established for those to follow.
    
    Birth records are not available to outsiders for 60 years or so thus they are not very consequential to the parties involved however they may feel about it.
    A later addendum allowing recording of the persons preferred gender would not be unreasonable but should be seen as an extension not a substitution.

      Sounds a bit like eugenics to me? Aryan lineage? Perfect breeding?
      
      I don’t really care much for lineage even though it connects me to Scots Lairds with castles and a great great grandfather who was a Canadian PM.
      
      It also connects me to the fore-mentioned alcoholic father and mental patient mother.
      
      I care more about what a person can do themselves rather than by relying on the crutch of lineage for their supposed value to society.
      
      I’d rather be judged by how I stand on my own two feet than on whether my grandfather was famous or my father was an alcoholic.
      
      A note attached to a person’s record is one thing, but that is not what is being debated. When they say they want to “correct” birth certificates they mean reissuing the birth certificate to record the chosen gender. I believe in some places such “corrections” are also applied for adoptions.
      
      Making these arbitrary just makes the whole concept of birth certificates rather pointless.

A very concerning case at Middlemore Hospital last night; TVNZ reports:

A man who shared a room with three others in a surgical ward at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland has tested positive for Covid-19.

An employee at the hospital confirmed the case to 1 NEWS on Sunday evening.

Three men are in the room at the Edmund Hillary Block ward, one of them is a 91-year-old who told 1 NEWS a fourth man was admitted around 7am on Sunday.

The elderly man, who does not want to be named, said the person was “sneezing and coughing and made us all worried”.

He explained that at about 10:30am on Sunday “a few doctors came in to check him out”.

Having overheard the conversation with the doctors, he says it became clear to everyone else in the room that the new arrival had Covid symptoms.

“They checked if he had a cough, he had a fever, could not smell or taste and quite frankly – his symptoms were very unpleasant,” the elderly patient told 1 NEWS.

“The three of us in the room were horrified,” he said.

“They gave him a test, we knew he’d been tested because we heard the conversation.

“He stayed in his bed and slept a lot.”

The elderly patient said around 3:30pm two nurses in full PPE arrived and took the man away.

“At 5pm a nurse came in and said the room is going to be locked down. The ward seemed to empty out at about 3pm. Even though there were no visitors, everything went quiet on the ward.”

The three patients remaining in the room expect to be tested in the next several days and say they’ve “been locked in”.

“I’m 91 – I’m an ill man and seriously at risk. It was so damned obvious when we saw him in the room.

“I feel it’s negligence,” he said.

“How did he get admitted into the Edmund Hillary block with three others let alone the fourth floor?”

For months, we’ve heard how transmissible the Delta variant of Covid is. So here we have a man, ill enough to need admission to hospital, with Covid symptoms, placed in a general ward whilst his Covid test is processed. Only after the positive test came back, did the PPE come out.

And now three men, including a 91-year-old, are effectively locked down in a hospital ward because someone made the decision to park the fourth man up in their room. Surely, this bloke should have been isolated until such time as his test came back.

The only possible excuse is that Middlemore is under so much pressure that someone made an error of judgment. That won’t be much comfort though for the three blokes who now face an extended stay in hospital. Fortunately, two of the three men, including the 91-year-old, are vaccinated.

It’s interesting too that a staff member alerted TVNZ. With our honest and transparent government, would we ever have found out about this otherwise?

It probably won’t change anyone’s mind, so politicised has this topic now become, but the Economist reports the outcome on actual effort to find out what difference wearing masks makes in the real world. It involved 350,000 in 600 villages in Bangladesh at a time Covid was circulating widely. They tested three options – do nothing, cloth masks and surgical masks.
One finding was that when masks and training in wearing them was provided, 42% of people wore them correctly, as opposed to 13% elsewhere.
Their key finding was that, after 8 weeeks, prevalence of Covid-19 was 8% lower in villages provided with cloth masks and 14% lower in villages using surgical masks. Surgical masks were associated with a 35% reduction in confirmed symptomatic cases among those 60 and older.

So perhaps a sensible approach is to allow and encourage mask wearing, especially among those who are elderly (and probably the medically vulnerable als0). But not to worry too much about mandating it, especially among the younger and healthier.

  people tend to call economics “the dismal science” because it’s so difficult to do controlled experiments. you cannot simply run the economy once with interest rates at 4% then again at 6% and compare. it’s inherently limiting to the discipline.
  
  but this bangladesh study, originally published by “the national bureau of economic research” is so bad that i fear this is way past that. (newer version HERE but this the same study with new data cuts added.) even those legends of non-replication and bias injection in sociology and psychology would not accept a study like this. i have no idea how NBER fell for it.
  
  this one would get you laughed out of a 7th grade science fair.
  
  it violates pretty much every single tenet of setting up and running a randomized controlled experiment. its output is not even sound enough to be wrong. it’s complete gibberish.
  
  truly, a dismal day for the dismal science and those pushing it into public health.

We have an MIQ system for those who “may be” infectious, so why on earth is there not a place for those who may be a credible risk to the rest of us due to their mental / ideological state.

krazy kiwi — while I dont disagree with a lot of things you say perhaps the genocide comment might be a bit extreme. Yet I have family in Melbourne and Queensland and the feedback from them is while the lock downs are frustrating they seem to accept them as being necessary— and they are conservative people.
It has been suggested to me people living in those states are reluctant to tell others by phone or social media their real feelings —maybe I dont know.

In Bridge’s place is the woke Lloyd Burr, whom I will not be listening to whatsoever.

What is happening at mediaworks since Wallace arrived? I also see Peter Williams stepping down. Did Garner and Williams step down willingly or were they pushed by Wallace? It appears to be the latter.

For quite a while, Woke Woofters have been trying to get new names for master-slave ranking of hard disks when one (or more) is subsidiary to a master disc. Master is the “boss” disc.

Now the crazies are after the use of “Bob and Alice” in cryptography. This has been the typical way of talking of a corresponding pair when you are talking about messages. “Bob” transmits to “Alice,” etc.

Computer science lecturers at Edinburgh University have been told to “avoid using predominantly Western names such as Alice/Bob, as is common in the computer security literature.”

The Telegraph reports the university’s senior managers are carrying out an “inclusivity impact assessment” of any new courses before they can be approved to ensure “every new course will have to explicitly consider decolonisation.”

The university was founded in 1582. Recently it changed the name of a tower that had celebrated David Hume, one of the world’s greatest philosophers. Hume began studies at Edinburgh University from the age of 12. That was 298 years ago.

The move followed an online petition with only about 1,700 signatures that claimed Hume “wrote racist epithets” and called for the building to be renamed.

  Computing was once a meritocracy. Now it is getting more and more woke every day.
  
  We’re seeing “researchers” being awarded PhDs in feminist computing – alleging that computers are inherently sexist because the CPUs are predominantly designed by men and thus programs written by women don’t work as well. A bit of a slap in the face for the mowne who have made it.
  
  We’re seeing the same for black vs white too (forgetting that Asians and Jews play a massive role in computer design).
  
  Standard practices like code reviews (ie. having other people check code to make sure it is high quality) are getting shelved because they are stressful and judgemental.
  
  As we get more powerful computers we can replace efficient code with less efficient code which compensates for some of the resulting crapness in code construction. However the result is that we don’t get the performance we should, computers are more expensive than they need to be and use more power than they should (ie. burn more coal etc).

    Who was responsible for the recent terrorist being held for three years in prison on remand? Was that another Police crime? Being on remand I expect he would have been on a “call over” list for a Court re-appearance in the short term. Those can be renewed. I am suspicious that he was dropped from such a procedure. I cannot imagine this occurred over the whole three years.
    As these frequently involve the Court Registrars was there a quiet hint to them to ignore him? I doubt if a Judge was involved.
    I am not excusing the terrorist by any means but we do not punish before the crime. The right to liberty except by lawful trial is enshrined in a thousand years of law. It is to stop tyranny. Do we now how have Nu Tirani?

Some trivia for our times:
The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That’s an exceedingly odd number.
Why was that gauge used?
Well, because that’s the way they built them in England, and English engineers designed the first US railroads.
Why did the English build them like that?
Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the wagon tramways, and that’s the gauge they used.
So, why did ‘they’ use that gauge then?
Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing.
Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?
Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break more often on some of the old, long distance roads in England . You see, that’s the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So who built those old rutted roads?
Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since.
And what about the ruts in the roads?
Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match or run the risk of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome , they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever.
So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder ‘What horse’s ass came up with this?’, you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses’ asses.)
Now, the twist to the story:
When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses’ behinds.
So, a major Space Shuttle design feature, of what is arguably the world’s most advanced transportation system, was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse’s ass. And you thought being a horse’s ass wasn’t important? Ancient horse’s asses control almost everything……

Better yet what about the headline “David Seymour post suggests people use Maori code to get covid19 vaccine” which would leave it up to the reader to decide if he deserved backlash or praise.

But no, we can’t have people making up their own minds about things can we. They might reach the wrong conclusion!

    That’s fine for you to accept that you will not get notified if the place you visited ends up being a Covid19 infected place of interest. But what if you were the person that brought the virus to this place? Will you be able to remember all the places you visited and the time you spent at each of those places so others who dutifully signed in can get notified that they need to get tested?

  I don’t understand the constant claims we are hearing that Maori have been left out and discriminated against.
  Group 1 covered port, airport & MIQ workers and their households. I’d think there would be a fair few Maori in those groups.
  Group 2 specifically included older Maori being cared for by whanau and those who live with them or care for them. Those living or working in long-term residential care are also in this group, along with anyone in the Counties Manukau DHB with an underlying health condition, disability or pregnancy and people in custody.
  I wonder how many Maori in Counties Manukau area weren’t covered under one of those criteria?

    The problem is that Seymour has chosen to undermine a targeted health initiative by recommending to his followers that they should lie when presenting for a vaccination.
    This is despicable behaviour from a member of parliament and for that he should be held accountable before the privileges committee or resign.
    Through his own actions Seymour has demonstrated contempt for health providers working hard to provide vaccination facilities for all New Zealanders, particularly those groups that may harbour vaccination hesistancy.

Diminishing testing
In the past three days (including today) the number of new covid cases have each day been 20, all in Auckland.
But in the past three days, those tests in Auckland assumed to relate to these three consistent results have been Saturday 5,322, Sunday 2,592, and today 2,088.
So Sunday was 48.7% of Saturday’s related tests, and today’s 80.5% of yesterday or 39.2% of Saturday’s total.

So to a statistics simpleton (c’est moi) does finding the same number of cases for a lesser and lesser number of tests not mean the infection rate, although seeming the same, is in fact rising?

Or, are only sicker feeling people bothering to get tested, or– besides Aucklanders seeming less willing, or considering a lesser need for testing – is something else happening?

What is the justification for this considering the South Island has not had a positive case of Covid-19 in the community for over a year and all testing, including waste water testing has come back negative?.         Quite. The recent Covid-19 attributed death of a woman in her 90s, having comorbidities that prevented ventilation was a reminder of how politicised these deaths have become.
        
        Of the ~92 people who die in NZ each day, 20 of these are women who are 85+ years of age. There’s no press conference to mourfully declare their passing. It’s all show, and manipulation.

Ardern obviously realising she’s going down the gurgler in their internal polling, so had better do something quick smart to arrest the slide. Everyone but Auckland down to level 2. Doesn’t realise, due to her lack of economic prowess, that taking out auckland = you are taking out the whole of nz.

Time to lockdown the suburbs in Auckland exhibiting COVID in their waste water testing and open up the other suburbs that are free of COVID. This sledgehammer approach to the Auckland lockdown is not going to end well for NZ.

Only good outcome could be that some of the Auckland electorates swing right at the next election.

The government started from the fundamental error that instead of risk managing those at risk over 70, they would simply lock down everyone.

Then came the remorseless logicians. We now have bedlam. Changing course would lose too much face.

Talking to my mate in the uk , I said good on Boris for having the balls to open up .
He said …. it wasn’t Boris
He says the people of the uk gave up on following the rules , started doing what they want , in droves , ignored the govt , n Boris realised he had lost the people … and Boris had a choice ….. give the people what they want and stay in power ( timed it for the Euro footy finals which England were in , big political capital there ) or …. ignore them and carry on and get voted out next election .
That’s the answer .
He said you won’t read this in the msm , like us they control the narrative . But he was there and saw it happen and it’s the truth.

REMEMBER . Power is given . We can’t be forced to do anything . It starts with one , then a few , then some blog sites , then larger networks …. it is up to us to give the fingers to the govt next lockdown and carry on . They can’t arrest us all , if enough people do this we will be free of this tyranny .

Well, if you contrast Aucklands data to Melbourne, it’s very similar in trend, especially when sized for the different populations, I think we are done with zero. The assumption that somehow we are better than the Aussies dosnt wash. We need an Incredible amount of luck, again to get to zero. The middlemore case is horrific, I expect that to be a new cluster. How ma y people and his 9 home members have mixed with others, Inlcluding staff Consuming ventilation in the non Infections zone. This has the potential to blow up big time:(

I don’t mean to depress Aucklanders but here is some reality
Right now there are heaps of people driving around visiting drug dealers picking up weed n crack etc .
Right now there are a lot of pent up citizens visiting women and men for sex
Right now a lot of people with a sniffle won’t test for fear of being locked up in MIQ. Would you rather be home or there ?
Right now there are many folk who just won’t test for many reasons
Right now there are thousands of aucklanders living on septic tanks in rural areas . Wastewater testing town mains , obviously, can’t pick these up
It hasn’t gone anywhere and never will . It will get worse .
Right now dozens of people are sharing the same air in a supermarket , masks don’t stop air escaping .
I believe it is outside Auckland undetected
When I’m working in a sewer manhole I wear a double filtered mask with organic filters not the cheap crap we all hv for covid . Even then gas will get me n thus a gas detector is required .
If you can smell a fart it’s useless . Only stops droplets . Not virus filled air .
Get ready for the long haul psychologically, seriously , look after yours and others mental health up there .

1. Refusal of the NZ State to allow my return for absolutely necessary medical treatment.
2. Refusal of the NZ State to allow my return for legal reasons of overstay, and inability to fulfill Thai Immigration regulations
3. The New Zealand State is now a Socialist and Fascist State dangerous and active against all who oppose it.
4. I have never threatened the NZ State or any person within that corrupt State with activity that is illegal or violent.
5. I am aware there are no New Zealanders at our Bangkok Embassy
Please therefor guide me on the steps I should take to achieve refugee status, recognising that my physical health is impaired.
I am always good to Thailand , and have spent much time here since 2011 to the benefit of all who are associated with me .
I have an abundance of evidence for my application, and for my allegations against the State of New Zealand
That evidence will take time to prepare
I am in no position to pay fines a fees associated with anything the New Zealand Embassy will or will not do on my behalf.
Failing help from my own country I now have to seek assistance here in Thailand or elsewhere .
