A State of National Emergency has been declared across the country as the Government pulls out all the stops to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
“Today we put in place our country’s second ever State of National Emergency as we fight a global pandemic, save New Zealanders’ lives and prevent the very worst that we’ve seen around the world from happening here,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said – Beehive Press Release 25 March 2020

Far as I know this Emergency has not yet been re-Cinded
And more so, as we appear on the verge of Omicron sweeping the nation.
In what Jacinda had emphasised may be a matter of life or death for elderly persons with underlying medical conditions, I fall into both categories, so as a matter of considerable self-interest I ask “Where the Hell was yesterday’s ‘1pm’ Health Department release?”

And, while I am at it, “Why the Hell is the release never on time?” and further, “Why the Hell is it obviously released to media before the public?”

Although it is typical of all other Labourless Government non-delivery, if covid is a bloody crisis, which may take out some of us early, why are we wasting precious time checking to see if the latest figures are yet on the website, up to an hour, or more, later than 1pm?

  Re MIQ. A smart Government would have appointed several of the large travel agents to co-ordinate with the airlines large hotel chains and the NZDF ( for security). Min of Health and MBIE would have had an over sight role only.
  The result would have been an orderly return of Kiwis including allowing those with dying or dead family a priority of Pommie DJs.
  
  Instead we have an omnishambles. I hope the Court find the Government in breach of the BoRs HR Act and International Laws on the 25 Jan and castigate the Government and its departments for the current unnecessary situation.
  
  It again proves thats central and local government have no customer focus because they are monopolies.

  For some reason, not explained, The Ministry of Health decided last year that there would not be a release of Covid-numbers on Saturday Jan 8th. 2022.
  
  Health officials will not be releasing latest case numbers today, in spite of the growing number of Omicron cases at the border and fears it will be days before infections spill into the community.
  The Ministry of Health has elected to defer issuing a statement until tomorrow, a move arranged last year.
  
  The next Covid-19 update will be tomorrow at 1pm.

  They will want to keep the State of Emergency (as in other countries like Italy till 31 Mar) as it gives the Govt special powers over their citizens they would not normally have. Therefore the “pandemic” has to continue.

I wrote the letter below (to the Dominion Post) on 1 January. I guess that I’ll die waiting for it to be published…..

“Dear Editor

On 31 December 2021 you reported, in an article about Covid misinformation, that “Long-term side effects of Covid-19 vaccination are not a thing”. I take it, then, that you can prove that Covid-19 vaccinations have caused no deaths at all. If so, you have achieved what the Covid-19 Vaccine Independent Safety Monitoring Board has been unable to achieve.

You see, it seems to me that death is a long-term side effect, if ever there was one. And it most certainly is “a thing”.

National MP attends anti-mandate, anti-lockdown protest (1news.co.nz)
iNews has reported on a National Politician who has had the balls to attend an anti-mandate, anti-lockdown protest.
I applaud this. It is the first example to my knowledge of an elected representative actually going out to listen to a significant (despite what the media say) part of the electorate.
Luxon, showing the leadership which will essentially consign him to the circular file next election said:
“I have talked to Harete and she has taken her post down. The views of the group she was with do not align with those of the National Party.
“I am strongly supportive of vaccination, as is the National party. I encourage everyone to take that step as the best protection, for themselves and their family, against Covid.”
So there we have it.
The potential leadership and willingness to get out there and address the divisiveness and hurt Jacinda Ardern has visited upon this once democratic nation, versus the tyrannical, one-dimensional ‘new order’, in which differing views are shut down with the cackling media cheering on the sidelines.
Just to repeat what is said here:
“I am strongly supportive of vaccination, as is the National party. I encourage everyone to take that step as the best protection, for themselves and their family, against Covid.”
I hope that is remembered. It will make a fitting political epitaph for The National Party.
They disgust me.

  How can it be possible to have 120 MPs and apparently none that represent the views of 10% (at the very least) of the population? It isn’t possible. Which means the levels of censorship and shutting down of free speech are worse here than in places like Venezuela and Cuba.

      Politically, for National, it is a pointless one, to merely suggest you are going to do the same as Ardern ‘only harder’. It can only suggest to me they are working to lose.
      
      For, what is the point of handing power to an alternative Party that is promising to just shaft you harder and better than the last one?
      
      By dancing to the covid tune, they are ensuring Ardern will win. Such is the leadership vacuum here.
      
      I’d actually vote Ardern on the basis at least she’s incompetent and we might hold on to a few of our civil rights a bit longer than if ‘Deny WFF to the unvaxxed’ Luxon gets in. Yes, I’d vote Labour to keep him out.
      
      These people are seriously out of control and need a reality check.
      
      A new political party which actually represents people is now long overdue.

        David, they have rebranded as the New Nation Party and are looking to register in the next month or so I believe.
        
        They are very much concerned about the direction the country is heading in and do not believe the National party have the will to steer us away from the cliff.
        
        They have some policies that I think many would agree with here, however a major concern is that vote splitting could see Labour back in 2023. One of the policies they are very clear on is the need to scrap mandates – if articulated and promoted well, this could be enough to carry 5% on election day.

        A “shared agenda” is precisely what it is. Sam Francis wrote a book called ‘Beautiful Losers’ about the mainstream conservative movement in the US. Conservative parties are conservative in name only, they have been systematically neutered and become divorced from any right wing agenda since about WW2 and in essence, their role is to not win, or if they happen to, to do nothing that will upset the apple cart. This is why Trump was vilified, because he posed such an existential threat to the cozy arrangement, and could have made real inroads on a populist agenda. National (and the GOP and the Tories etc.) exist simply to divert resources from any truly conservative movement that would make a real difference if it got into power, and to provide an illusory alternative.

        If a politician is voted out they can and do ,either return via the list or just keep their influence through party appointment.

        This a myth, beloved of rightoids. I’m pretty sure all MPs are either Electorate winners or Electorate losers. They all faced the voters. The only MP I can recall who never faced the voters, i.e., never stood in an Electorate contest, is Steven Joyce.

        Absolute tripe.
        
        Most countries around the world use some form of MMP/Party List proportional representation electoral system, to elect their parliaments, and those countries have regular (or semi-regular) changes of governments, just as we do.
        
        So we are now stuck with them,
        
        More tripe.
        
        This government (or, should it be elected in 2023, the Labour/Green government), will fall out of favour with the People soon enough — just as all previous governments have, and all future governments will — and be replaced with a National / ACT government.
        
        So, you’re just going to have to wait until a majority of voters think (at least broadly) the same way you do. That’s democracy, whether you like it or not.

      It’s closer to 20% This number is growing by the day. To think otherwise is to believe everyone, jabbed and unjabbed, thinks in particular ways. Which would be an error of judgement. Segregation is not the Kiwi way. Neither is State coercion, mandated removal of individuals means to make a living. Not being able to get a haircut or sit in a cafe. Or enrol at university etc. Hundreds of thousands of NZers are outraged, at this. And they are highly motivated.

        With regard to support/dissent for Covid restrictions, the numbers will only ever go one way – supporters will become dissenters, it will never be the inverse. Why would it? Let’s say for arguments sake that 100% initially supported every Covid measure: it’s certainly not 100% now, and support can only decrease. This is guaranteed. Overt dissent started small, but it will grow to a critical mass. The timeframe is the only question. Thus, the government will always be in a constant retreat fighting a rearguard action from now on in.
        
        Moreover, everyone should realise that, currently vaxxed or not, everyone is living in the same situation under the same draconian rules, a segregated society wherein your basic rights fundamentally depend on what the government thinks is fitting. There is no getting away from this, because it’s a fact.
        
        Ask yourself: what happens if I change my mind? What if I decide I want to opt out, 2 months, 6 months or a year from now? Guess what, you’ll be subject to the same treatment as those who have already opted out. No credit will be given for your past compliance: it will be irrelevant in the future.

If it was the one re loss of freedom of speech making us not much different to other oppressive regimes, I stand by that comment. As with the mainstream media, there is zero tolerance for dissenting points of view. The apparent inability of a single MP to speak out against mandates and passports is revealing.

  Seeing it’s Sunday and I’m in a gracious mood, let’s imagine that Christopher Luxon is keeping his powder dry for the next election? He promises prosperity and jobs and is swept to power on a wave of aspirational kiwis.
  He then in his first 6 months reverses the whole labour agenda. No more race agenda, moderate abortion laws, affordable housing for all, growth, prosperity, family, community, dare I say it – love of country and patriotism.

      Chuck – jacinda pushed through the extreme abortion law we have now. It gives nothing to the prolife side. It’s abortion essentially up until birth.
      I would argue for a moderate law that recognises both sides of the issue.
      I don’t think that’s too much to ask quite frankly.

        Abortion “essentially up until birth” does not exist in New Zealand — because it is against the law. The gestational age of the fetus must be taken into account when abortion services for women who are more than 20 weeks pregnant is being contemplated.
        
        As I said to you on 17 September (“Advice for National”, 16 September), which you may not have seen, “A late-term fetus would be delivered by Casarean section and, if rejected by the mother, put up for adoption.”

      How many think that their present ability to access a health professional is improved by the amount of time that is spent on abortions.
      Isn’t it time serious consideration was given to an alternative solution.

    He will continue to implement the WEF road map if Labour loses in 2023.
    
    That is why he will not be subjected to the sustained hostility and lies that Judith Collins had to endure during her time as leader.
    
    I’m reminded very much of when Labour introduced neoliberalism in NZ during the 1980s, they got voted out in hope that National would stop the asset selloffs and system-wide changes.
    Instead, when National got in they ramped it up massively.

      I think I would be very generous if I said it was only 20%. So even if we give you that – you believe that the opinion of 20% of the population is irrelevant?
      You are the definition of a fascist. You would have been one of the silent Germans tacitly supporting any and all measures taken against minorities. Actually, based on your comments here, you wouldn’t have been silent.   National does walk a tight line with the “Right of Centre” vote
  I wonder if they even talk with Act and aim to work together.
  It would be the perfect opportunity for Act to represent the people that feel marginalized and look to team up with National to form the next Government.

      The distinction is far greater than that, and is an important one. For example, I’m double-jabbed (not vaccinated, nobody is) but strongly against vaccine mandates, and equally opposed to lockdowns – for different but related reasons.

  After doing a no-show on the health update yesterday, last night an article went up announcing two huge music fesitvals are locations of interest. …and nothing about it this morning. Matakana festival and Bay of Plenty Festival. But the article isn’t clear.

  Some DJs that played at the festival in Mount Maunganui are also currently playing at an event in Auckland.

  A Covid-19 case announced on Saturday afternoon in Wellington is possibly linked to the Bay of Plenty festival.”
  
  So why are they telling us about DJ Friction and Koven playing in Auckland. Is it the DJ’s that are infected? Why don’t they just tell us who is infected. If it was a DJ then the whole stadium wouldn’t need to isolate – not everyone would have been near the DJ’s. Is the infected case vaxxed (presumably so)? Because when they thought the longroom event was unvaxxed it was the headline, but when they are vaxxed it is not mentioned in the whole article.

    It’s also possiblle to be pro vaccination of the mmr and normal childhood vaccines, but not take the annual flu shot nor the new provisionally approved mRNA treatment that does little to prevent transmission.They want to link the mRNA to vaccines like the mmr which is safe and effective and resulted in herd immunity instead of discussing the reality of this new technology which is not creating herd immunity and is more like a flu shot.     By your measure, anything over 90% support from the public should be automatically followed by MPs.
    
    The referendum in 1999 asked “Should there be a reform of our Justice system placing greater emphasis on the needs of victims, providing restitution and compensation for them and imposing minimum sentences and hard labour for all serious violent offences?”.       Funny how politicians follow the will of the masses only when it (they tell us) aligns with their own agenda. By this principle, they should also determine the way forward on He Puapua as well as the cross-party mass immigration agenda: have a binding referendum on both. Of course they won’t, because they’d get an answer that conflicts with their preferred agenda.
      
      Also, saying that x% are vaccinated, therefore x% support the vaccination program does not follow at all. Coercion has played a huge roll in the vaccination proportions, as can be demonstrated by the very low uptake prior to the “Delta scare” as well as the very implementation of coercive mandates themselves: if people were really willing free agents, then no mandating would have been required.

      I can only assume that Wayne is talking about 1st jab with that figure. According to today’s stats from the MOH for eligible population, via RNZ:
      1st dose 91%
      2nd dose 88%
      booster 10%
      
      It took weeks to crawl from 87% to 88% and has since on that figure for two weeks now.
      
      And of course if there was a number for fully vaccinated that took account of the waning efficacy of the Pfizer juice following a second dose, we’d have a good picture of the growth, peak, and decline of the measure of “fully vaccinated”.

    Applies to all age groups covered but excludes the very oldest group and the younger group. Oldest because vaccination level is so high that there isn’t a sufficient number of unvaccinated to provide useful numbers, and for the youngest groups the opposite effect, vaccinations only just started so levels are very low.
    
    Why, not clear but quite possibly the captive immune system effect as predicted, whereby the vaccine blocks the immune system from responding properly to a sufficiently different variant.
    
    So with Omicron, it looks like we should be demanding vaccine passes then banning those who have them from locations, not the other way around.

      Captive immunity is a remote possibility at best. The very obvious vaccine against variant A less effective against variant B and again for variant C.
      Given Omicron is fairly well shown to have tolerably low virulence especially for vaccinated then no reason to reverse current policies.
      Hopefully the government thinking is to let it in in a controlled manner. But are they there yet? And of course any attempt to control will crash and burn on their inability to deliver anything.

    Consider this: these current percentages (and if we take them at face value for arguments sake) are not “permanent” levels, because, as people will find out, the definition of “fully vaccinated” will be a moveable feast, and will be determined by ongoing arbitrary government demands.
    
    Among this present 90% , there will be untold numbers who were, effectively, forced into taking their two shots, as the consequences of not doing so were judged as being too onerous. I would think that (based on the initial very low uptake when it was still voluntary) it is only a very small percentage who got the procedure regardless of any potential restrictions.
    
    So, what will happen when many in this current 90% come to the stark realisation that they are no longer considered vaccinated? This will cause a lot of friction and widespread discontent, building with increasing and inexorable momentum the dissent that currently exists. Inevitably, the numbers of those deemed vaccinated will go only one way – ever downward. There will be an inflection point where compliance comes at too high a cost. So they will no longer comply. This ongoing compliance requirement is the Achilles Heel in the government’s plan. It’s going to be a very hard sell to get people to have their 4th, 5th,6th … nth boosters, and at every diminishing intervals, something that is already being planned. People are going to find out just how much they’ve been deceived. They were led to believe that double-jabbed will get them back to normal: wrong!

      Apart from government edicts eg health sector, education sector, many sites and businesses voluntarily adopted mandates / passes for staff and often customers as well. Like council and uni sites.
      
      Do they have plans if a growing number of staff and customers no longer have a current pass but still require one at green or restrict numbers substantially? Like hospo, watching sport, funerals.
      
      Public facilities like libraries, galleries at green can continue to require the pass – will they or will they think they’ve been on to a good thing with same pay and fewer customers? But the point is – do they have a plan and if so what is it.
      
      Green is not normal.

      I agree that many of the vaccinated were coerced into doing so and will feel resentment and have strong negative feelings about vaccine mandates. Those feelings will be directed to both the government and employers. Not likely to improve productivity.
      
      Also, knowing that the unvaccinated are being discriminated against doesn’t sit well with a number of people, vaccinated or not.

I remember when

Davy was a rodeo rider in the days when there was a regular circuit and they even had rodeo dances at popular venues.
Later Davy became a prominent Hawke’s Bay horse trainer. An era when horses were a much more common part of the entertainment scene.

What would happen if Westerners tried this on?
A. Go to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq or Iran illegally. Never mind immigration quotas, visas, international law, or any of that nonsense. Demand a free house, benefits and food.
B. Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care for you and your entire family.
C. Demand that all nurses and doctors be fluent in English, and that all food be cooked according to your specifications in the hospital.
D. Demand free local government forms, bulletins, etc. Be printed in English.
E. Procreate abundantly.
F. Deflect any criticism of this allegedly irresponsible reproductive – Behaviour with, ‘It is a cultural thing; you wouldn’t understand.’
G. Keep your original identity strong. Fly your home country’s national flag from your rooftop, or proudly display it in your front window, or on your car bumper.
H. Speak only English at home and in public, and make sure that your children do likewise.
I. Demand classes on English culture in the Muslim school system.
J. Demand a local country driving license or national insurance number equivalent
K. This will afford other legal rights and will go far to legitimise your unauthorised, illegal, presence in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Ir aq
L. Drive around with no car tax or insurance and ignore local traffic laws.
M. Insist that the Police teach English to all its officers.
N. Organise protest marches against your host country, inciting violence against non-white, non-Christians, and the government that let you in.
Good luck! You’ll soon be dead..
It would never happen in Pakistan , Afghanistan Iraq or Iran (or any other country in the world for that matter) except in the:
UK , US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.
Because we are run by soft, politically correct politicians who are too scared to ‘offend’ anyone.

      Pakistan was ‘generously’ given its independence in 1948.
      Afghanistan was abandoned to the Teliban.
      I don’t know what’s going on in Iraq.
      The UK/US reinstated the Shah in 1953 after they organised a coup. He was given the flick in 1979 and Iran have been at odds with the West thereafter.
      
      What does this have to do with NZ?
      A few people come here as migrants or refugees and depending on their situations qualify for housing or social welfare, hang out together, whatever, and some people begrudge them the chance to live normal life.

  I read a factual story in Time magazine in the 70s or 80s that reflects that perfectly.
  The story was about a high flying Wall Street type. In his 30s, apartment over Central Park, high 6 figure income, working 60 – 70 hours a week. The highlight of his year was going to the Caribbean, hiring a charter fishing boat for a week and chasing marlin.
  Story was how he had an epiphany. Sold the apartment, cashed in his shares, took his severance money, flew to the Caribbean, bought a 45 ft charter boat, went fishing and drinking beer anytime he wanted – and occasionally took paying customers out. If he felt like it.

    Time is the new money. That used to be the preserve of the well off, but there are plenty of households with multiple income streams and paid off homes. Some of those households will have members laid laid off due to mandates, or voluntarily resigning due to increased stress covering for them.
    
    For example, there are thousands of teachers over pension age and many will have employment pensions as well.

  One of W Somerset Maugham’s short stories in the series ‘On a Chinese Screen’ [Penguin re-published them in 4 volumes] is on this theme.
  
  A bank clerk in his early 30’s won a lottery [this was in the 1930’s) and decided to turn it into an annuity so that he could live abroad on a Greek Island.
  
  Cost of living was cheap and he figured he had 30 years of annuity before it ran out.
  
  When one of his friends asked him what he would do when it ran out, he said – By then I would have had a wonderful life of freedom, which as a bank clerk I would never have had. When the annuity runs out I will kill myself.
  
  Years later, Somerset Maugham/the narrator visited the island where this guy was living, and at a local bar asked some of the locals about him. In those days a foreigner living in a Greek island was very unusual.
  
  The upshot was that when the annuity ran out the fellow lacked the courage to kill himself. Instead he ran up debts, which at first were of no concern to the locals as he was an Englishman (which meant something in the ’30’s), and also he had hitherto never not paid his way.
  
  But eventually they realized he had no money, and he was reduced to living in a hovel on a local Greek herdsman’s land, in exchange for herding the goats and getting fed.
  
  He was treated very badly by the peasant landowner, who had lost all respect for the Englishman, and was half-starved.
  
  He ended up losing his mind and could do no work. His skeletal remains, scattered by wild animals, were found in the hovel one winter’s morning. They buried him in an unmarked grave.
  
  As an aside – I read W Somerset Maugham’s short stories every ten years or so. They are wonderful. When I first read them in my 20’s I was often unable to understand or sympathize or identify with with some of the characters’ actions and motives, thinking ‘you idiot(s)’
  
  However, as the decades rolled on and I re-read the stories I increasingly became aware of why this or that character acted in the way he or she did. Their actions became understandable and I, the reader, increasingly developed feelings of pathos and understanding, instead of the condemnation of cold logic.
  
  And from my vantage point now, which is one of old age, I realized that I had made many of the same mistakes…Altho, fortunately, not the financial ones [so far].

      ‘The Letter’ is a good example of the genre, as is ‘The Four Dutchmen’ [from memory].

The government should have ordered about 5 billion Vitamin D tablets from India and given them out for free. The data on the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and COVID illness is rock solid.

      Moreover, Covid has never been treated in NZ nor around the world. Our authorities have essentially banned Ivermectin and you’ll never get hydroxychloroquine here. Medsafe is in the process of approving Ronapreve, which is a start and Pharmac has brought this drug off Roche. But nevertheless, all of our Pharmac budget for Covid has gone on the ineffective vaccine, which addresses symptoms, with nothing spent on the causes or treatment. I don’t consider a vaccine to be treatment, especially an experimental one.

        New Zealand’s vaccine policies were designed 12 months ago when the initial data showed the vaccine was 95 percent effective against transmission. If those numbers had held, the vaccines would have ended the pandemic. But of course those numbers faded like tears in the rain. And as reality dawned, Jacinda still said the vaccines would “stamp out covid like measles”. I wonder if she will ever apologise for saying something so stupid?

        The initial data didn’t show a 95% efficacy, but the numbers were adjusted so they would. FOIA releases have shown that from the Pfizer trial at least showed considerably less effectiveness than claimed.
        
        Also on drugs, NZ spent a reasonable sum on procuring Remdesvir and the basis of one shonky and misrepresented trial. Remdesvir has proved worthless to all but the Gilead shareholders, and has some rather nasty side effects on kidney function that were only discovered after preliminary “emergency” authorisation.
        
        The new Pfizer drug Paxlovid also has issues though at least it does appear to work. It has a rather long list of exclusions where it cannot be prescribed in tandem with a range of other drugs, especially AIDS medications. And Molnupiravir, also apparently purchased by NZ is a potent mutation agent that many are warning needs considerably more safety data before any significant use.

        The real important thing about Vit D deficiency is that the levels used to define “deficient” are the extremely low levels that cause rickets.
        
        There is no single level for enough Vit D.
        Lowish levels will sort our rickets.
        A higher level will give other benefits (immune system etc).
        An even higher level assists on other fronts.
        
        Vit D is stored in fat and our bodies adapted to that.
        
        200 years ago, most of us were farm labourers working in the sun during summer all day long – getting well fed. We’d store the Vit D we were making in the fat we were laying down.
        Then comes winter and we’d go into near hibernation – eating little, burning up the fat and releasing the Vit D.
        
        We don’t live that lifestyle anymore – therefore it is advisable to take more Vit D.
        
        The Israeli doc that spoke to Dr Campbell said that after he set up his patients with Vit D, not a single one (out of around 2000) was admitted to hospital with CV19. An impressive result.

        Ed, A clarification: R0 is not really a property of a disease, but rather a property of a disease in a specific environment in which it was measured.
        
        In other words, the R value will vary from situation to situation depending on many factors (nutrition, crowding, culture, time of year, etc).
        
        Since we have a naive population here (ie. very few having natural immunity) it is quite likely that Omicron is going to rip into NZ with a very high R.
        
        But until it happens we really don’t know. There might be some reason why that does not happen.

A surf lifesaver and emergency doctor, Payinda said…….. The tragedies would affect hundreds of lives that would never be the same.”

Pointing out that covid policies have negative and tragic consequences, not just for the victims. Not really in the “single source of truth” playbook.

  I have been wondering about any connection between the long lockdowns, the government control over and lives and the very high road and drowning toll- or water incidents as they are now termed!
  I too do not believe it is a coincidence. Where people lose the ability to make decisions around there lives they become fatalistic and i think some of that is being expressed and the results showing now.

The lead signatures in the letter are Covid-19 “personalities” Shaun Hendy and Siouxsie Wiles.

The surprise signature stumbled on is that of Craig Shearer, chairman, NZ Skeptics Inc.

The NZ Skeptics chief thus sided with the Woke mob on “Maori science.”

Driving around the country on my hols, I’ve noticed a surprising number of retail businesses keeping what I consider to be short hours. By which I mean cafes not opening until 10am etc. To be clear, these are businesses appealing to tourists as well as locals.

Now, I’m all for people doing whatever they want with their lives & businesses; but haven’t we just had lengthy lockdowns where businesses were subsidised to stay afloat? Surely, you would expect retailers to work all the hours God sends between 15 Dec & 15 Jan to maximise the tourist dollar? Put another way, any enthusiasm I previously had to support such businesses via my taxes has dwindled sharply.

      A point within Gee’s talk (shortly after 20:21 into it) may have relevance to some apparently disproportionate health problems of Maori.
      
      Gee says isolated populations tend to sufer more from particular diseases.
      
      From an originally small number of settlers Maori were isolated in NZ for five centuries or more (my words, not Gee’s).
      
      Gee says that when Dutch settlers arrived in South Africa’s Cape Colony (after 1650), one of the settlers carried a porphyria gene. Now “Dutch” South Africans suffered disproportionately from porphyria.
      
      If such a process is responsible for some Maori health issues, the cause does lie in colonisation – but in Maori’s own colonisation of these islands.

        High sugar and carb diets, with smoking, all in the mix.

    The holidays act makes it very expensive to trade over the stat days and with xmas and new years both on saturdays the Monday and Tuesdays became double time and day in lieu days.
    Shorter hours make the economics slightly better but still a bit of a punt for businesses already a bit bashed about.

      Also lots of young hospo workers left their jobs rather than have the jaxx. My two nieces for instance. One is a student, the other was on gap year – we strongly encouraged her to go on the dole while looking for other work options, not many in a tourist town.

  I suspect it’s a combination of fewer customers and staff costs making it not viable to be open longer hours. Plus the difficulty in getting staff especially in hospitality now that there are no international students and fewer people staying on work visas while they travel.
  I went to the local mall one day last week at around 11am. During school holidays at that time of the day it should have been quite busy, but it was so quiet, in many shops we were the only customers. That mall is normally packed in the holidays.
  Also of interest, the toy section in Farmers had a very small supply of stock – the shelves had an item at the front of the shelf and no more stock behind it. Plus an entire aisle of shelves completely bare. This would have been almost 2 weeks after Christmas, so plenty of time to restock the shelves, so presumably they hadn’t been able to get the stock in.

  NMTB, on the subject of closing I was recently watching a guy walking around New York central area after 3pm and he was amazed at the number of eateries that were closed for the day. He discovered of course the horrible number of departed and graffitied businesses, like a war zone it was. Maybe the longer you stay open the more chance you have of being robbed.

  Outside of Auckland, most of the country has had L2 restrictions for the past few months instead of lockdown. This means businesses have been open and plenty are going gangbusters. The thing is that the staff have had a shit 2021. Staff (and managers) are sick of wearing masks for 8 hours a day, enforcing BS ever-changing rules and dealing with complaints caused by broken supply chains. Plenty have burnt out already and need this time to take stock and regenerate. If you can’t get a coffee when you want, it is probably because like you, people need a break and businesses can’t operate without them.

Yes there are some who have called for Nuremberg type trials. If there is evidence of malfeasance and corruption to push through a medical intervention that doesn’t work, and that we know kills some people, why would there not be some form of legal ramifications? Presumably evidence would be presented and the judges and lawyers would do their thing. You know what they say, “nothing to fear, nothing to hide.”

After all, Jacinda has been on leave for a month already, Lorde is here … perhaps she’s waiting for the DJ to find a gap in his busy festival schedule.

I sincerely hope that following the wedding, Jacinda will take a lengthy honeymoon. The quiet has been nice.

      But I know a fair bit about corroborative evidence. The victim telling her friend what happened is not corroborative evidence, rather it’s an exception to the hearsay rules allowable in sexual crimes.

I think you have misread the tweet.
Roberts (Giuffre) texted her friend Carolyn Andriano and told her she had a date that night (2001) with Andrew.
She also sent her that photo taken the morning after of Andrew leaving…
Her friend has confirmed that- hence the corroboration.
Andriano was also a victim and witness at Ghislaines trial.

Red Radio reports some activists have left the party, and criticism of the party’s Government co-operation agreement:

“Ex-MPs Sue Bradford and Catherine Delahunty say the agreement makes no sense and that the party’s position in government amounts to a failure of leadership.”

RNZ says Delahunty criticised her former colleagues for not pointing to an “unholy alliance between banks and the government” that accounted for record bank profits, inflated house prices and growing inequality.

By creating the perceived problem, the feds get increased jurisdiction and commensurately increased funding to combat themselves. The federal government was really the biggest winner from Jan 6th, because it gave them a putative justification to go after the biggest threat to the Regime, disaffected (mostly) middle-Americans.

Vaccine effectiveness is declining or disappearing.”

Over the last couple of days, I can’t help noticing that the number of socialists posting and down-ticking has risen exponentially.

Obviously, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our socialist friends – your insights are always fascinating and much appreciated.

Of course, this piques my curiosity. I can’t help but wonder why all these socialists on this blog now? Is there a scientific reason, such as a sequence of full moons causing this behaviour? Or perhaps the socialists are like reef fish, and all swerve onto the site in unison?

My speculations for the reasons for this socialist behaviour above aren’t strong. Perhaps other posters might like to explain this curious behaviour?

    The socialist MSM is seeing their audience collapsing, as people are increasingly moving to blogs such as this. I barely look at the “Aotearoan” mainstream media anymore. The socialist blogs (such as The Standard et al) are absolutely dreadful, so that even socialists seem to prefer to come to sites like Kiwiblog.
    
    Your theory that the socialists could try to discredit this blog sounds reasonable to me – particularly since their opinion poll support is eroding.
    
    I hope our generous host holds firm. No surrender. 2022 could get nasty, as you say.
    
    As for the socialist poster you quoted, he was particularly angry and nasty. His obsession with “reeking shit” and “reeking arseholes” may need a psychiatrist to treat. Anyway, I hope he feels better now he has got that rant off his chest.

    Everyone on the left including politicians, political advisers, political activists, party members, the media, everyone, lost their ability to critique anything I say about anything the instant they bring identity politics into any part of their critique against me. And since these days none of them can stop doing that 24/7/365, they’re essentially all to me NPCs (non-playable characters – those actors you don’t control in a computer game).
    
    The logic is, my positions are normally reached through applying multiple disciplines of thought and analysis including economics and data and if all the left ever want to do is use one tool only to analyse my positions then go to hell with your critique mister, you don’t know shit.
    
    I don’t really understand why all conservatives at every level don’t just start doing this and treat everything the left says about us as coming from an npc therefore irrelevant so ignore completely.
    
    Imagine if parliament acted like that.
    
    And then the whole country.

I hope National has been working on a strategy for the massive pro Labour onslaught by the usual suspects looking for favours and profitable clicks. Just a prediction but I think Labour will be going in hard and early to steer the conversations either directly or via their surreptitious social media dirty politics teams. The teams that keeps the PM appearing squeaky clean and Labour looking like the good guys while the remote media teams pollute politics in NZ.

  And that’s only current data. What’s very uncertain from this unsafe and ineffective experimental vaccine is what the spike protein will do in our cells as it remains for probably 12 months or so.
  
  And how many cases of myocarditis will there be?
  
  What’s the effect on women’s ovaries of mRNA?
  
  If this experimental vaccine had gone through the proper clinical trial process, we might have some answers to these questions, instead there wasn’t any.

Wife has a penchant for good coffee, I have mundane tastes and settle for Nescafe Gold. Bought a bottle in Warehouse at what I thought was a good price . . . it was crap. Did a little research only to find out it is a parallel import from Russia. Has Ardern and her crew started their total commitment to communist ideology?
If not opened, I would have returned it and asked for a refumd. How much more second-grade rubbish are we being sold covered up and misrepresented as Australian or Kiwi new?
