Admittedly, setting up a rehab facility next to a bar and a bottle shop is a bit dumb but I would like to know which one was there first. I suspect it wasn’t the rehab facility.

  The article says ““We spoke to clients and the consensus was that, as addicts, they knew they had to face temptation every day anyway because alcohol is offered everywhere. ” The advantage of the site is its relative anonymity, apparently. Anyone recognising your car might think you’re at the bottle store, or nearby pub, which is good for people who aren’t ready to tell others they are alcoholics yet.

  I travel frequently to Taiwan. Every 7/11 and FamilyMart sells liquor (beer, wine and spirits) on virtually every street corner. I don’t recall ever seeing one intoxicated person.

    Same at Waikiki Beach, Honolulu. ABC stores everywhere. There was one inebriated person there. He was in his Hotel room sorting and emailing the days’ photos.

    On the whole this is correct. Like most places they can be found in poor out of the way villages. The one I know best only got a 7/11 in recent years but by all accounts has had an alcohol problem since the Japanese left.
    The most surprising decline I’ve seen there over the last 20 years is the reduction in people selling and chewing betel nut. Still see some 20y olds thou, typically making up the trio with alcohol and cigarettes.

    Same in Argentina. I remember seeing nightclub patrons leaving the clubs at 6/7 in the morning – and they weren’t drunk. Alcohol is available everywhere, but the people drink responsibly.
    The NZ and Aus drinking culture is terrible – a lot of people drink to get absolutely smashed – and we’re renown for it.

    Nurses “equity” back pay alone is $4 billion. That is on top of the 49% increase in pay levels since 2017. Nurses and teachers both get $100,000 by getting to the top of the scale. That is without any promotions, just going up the pay scale year by year.
    
    Someone who qualifies in teaching or nursing at age 22 will be on $100,000 in their late 20’s. We are talking about 200,000 people in teaching and nursing and related vocations. Public sector pay is now well ahead of the private sector. How many tradespeople get $100,000 without any promotions at all?
    
    Labour believes just about every part of the state sector, where women outnumber men are owed an “equity”settlement. Think teachers, arts, theatre workers and just about the entire administrative staff of the public sector.
    
    I reckon there could be as much as $20 billion in “equity” back payments prior to the election. To buy loyalty among the public sector unions and their members. It will be all funded by borrowing. Something of a poison pill for an incoming National led government.
    
    Labour has lifted the size of the public sector to nearly 40% of GDP compared to 30% in 2017. It will be the devils own job to shrink it back to say 35%.

        The Nurses MECA is about to end. You can be certain that the next agreement (applying from September 2023) will have at least a 7.5% increase. Basically to match the new primary teachers agreement, where the top step is $100,000. Higher still for secondary teachers.
        
        I also note that the current Nurses MECA has three steps above Registered Nurse for Designated Senior Nurses (Ward Charge?) which currently tops at $98,178. The new MECA will have the DSE’s going well above $100,000. Mind you, I would agree that a Ward Charge Nurse (but these may be above DSE’s) should get $100,000.

    We don’t need “pay equity agreements” as equal pay for equal work is enshrined in NZ legislation, and has been for more than 50 years!

  I’m not into the “pay equity” racket, but given the hours midwives have to work, the importance of expertise, and the high risks associated with getting it wrong I think it’s important to remunerate them well. Government money should be focussed in on funding core services like this and much less on the woolly administrative / “equity” / advertising spend that has clearly increased in recent times.

Ridicule the mentally ill unvaccinated. The unvaccinated should not be allowed to enter supermarkets. That will teach them, they do not belong in civil vaccinated society.

    Sadly, unless the polls are massively wrong, there seems to be many Kiwi’s out there that not only think Labour should be voted back in, but that to make things really interesting, wouldn’t it be great if we added more Green and a touch of racist incompetence via the Maori party.
    
    Said it before – one of two things will be confirmed on the evening of October 14th – either the polls, hopefully, are massively wrong and National / ACT are voted in by a landslide, or the polls are right and this country has given up the pretence of being a developed country.

      Personally, I think the polls are flawed. Talking with a number of National MP’s and candidates at the party’s conference two weeks ago, the overwhelming response that they were getting in the cities, towns and rural areas was that people are hurting from the cost of living crisis and interest rate rises, crime is out of control, and people are sick and tired of the government telling them that everything is fine.
      
      The polls aren’t yet picking up a strong desire for change, right across the country, and lots of people have expressed regret for voting Labour in 2020.

        Pady Gower and Soper on the AM show were adamant that Labour et al are out on their ear.
        They also were more than sceptical of the polls as practically anyone they have spoken to is wanting a change of govt.
        They went on with their criticism, labelling practically the entire Labour caucus as ‘numpties’ and Chris Hipkins as the Sous Chef of the policies he is making a bonfire of.

        Can only hope so Tony. There has been a few commentators that believe the polls are not even close to reality – Hosking and Bob Jones spring to mind, along with some on this blog.
        
        I really hope you and others are right and the polls are so wrong as to be worthless. The alternative, that we are lumbered with a Labour / Green / Maori government, could well be something from which the country may never recover from. Heck – the changes they’ll do to universal suffrage might mean you can’t vote them out in 2026 even if you want to!!!
        
        I know a lot of people say they’ll move country if the others win and it’s usually just talk, but with that toxic trio in charge, I suspect NZ could well see a talent / capital flight – might even be a sovereign debt default as well. I’ve started looking at roles / housing in Aussie just in case – I’m not a rich prick and getting on a bit so simply can’t afford to wait the bastards out and insulate myself from the effects of their envy taxes – and in my group, I’m not alone in testing the waters over the ditch. The Green taxes on personal assets will kill many folks prospects of a reasonable retirement and as someone who is closer to the end of a career than the start, this is pretty bloody scary. Might just be talk, but might not be. Let’s hope the polls are wrong and we get rid of these clowns for a generation.

        I’d like to think the polls are flawed as well, given the tech changes in the last twenty years, and given the fact that they have often been wrong before. But…
        
        They’re not usually hugely wrong, which means we can only hope that a small % diff between Centre-Right and Centre-Left will add up to a larger difference in votes/seats, even though MMP should track more closely to the polls than FPP.
        
        And I’ll leave you with this cheery thought. In the hindsight of Trump’s 2016 election a number of pollsters wondered if people had just lied to them because they were unwilling to admit, even to a stranger, that they were going to vote Trump.
        
        In other words, could it be that there are many Labour voters who know that Labour are so shit useless that they can’t defend them in public, yet will still vote for them? There are always the tribals, which I’ve pegged at 22-25% for both National and Labour, based on worst-case performances. But maybe that’s now around 30%?

        To be fair, lots of candidates have heard different versions of “I don’t know what came over me” or “What was I thinking?” or similar sentiments. There are lots of penitent people out there who can’t wait for the polls to open on October 2nd!

        and yet…. I talk to a wide range of people. On the whole, they are utterly uninformed. One 60 yr old bloke told me last week that he is voting greens because they got rid of plastic bags in supermarkets.
        I asked him what his thoughts were on the racism from the greens, the f*cked health system, the no-science science curriculum. He said, well I’m not voting National because they will cut costs and i’m not voting labour because they are not doing a good job….
        
        And he’s not a one off. The champagne socialists – people who can afford to look after themselves easily – are as bad. Co-governance is good to help the poor maori. Spending more on social services must be good. And so on.
        
        I would say that more than half my acquaintances will vote far left.

        I recall reading & hearing the same optimistic talk from US Conservatives before the last mid-terms. Look at the result. The GOP squeaked in to get the house & failed to get the Senate.
        
        Based on the Democrats destructive policies & economic failures they should have been gone for all money. Yet, for instance voters knowingly elected a Senator who can barely talk & should be in a stroke ward. His only contribution now is to turn up & remain breathing. And, his condition was well known to voters before the vote. I cannot understand this mentality.
        
        As in the US, our Left-wing Govt has most of the mainstream media, the Public Service, the Unions, most academics & most commentators on its side.
        
        Economic failures, inflation, scandals, stupidity, vast waste of public money, persistent lack of delivery & encouraging racial divisions, should be more than enough to get rid of this Govt, but history shows socialism is amazingly resilient & amazingly attractive to some even when it impoverishes them.
        
        I certainly hope you are correct to predict a win for National/Act, but after the US mid-term result for which I have yet to read a convincing explanation, there is still the possibility we could get a similar outcome here.

  Remember the government banned private entities from importing these kits, even confiscating their purchases early in the pandemic. You think the private sector would have ended up with a warehouse full of product?.
  
  Next thing to watch out for is the warehouse full of unused vaccine. The take up of the third booster has tapped out at 20 percent. Did they stupidly order enough vaccines for every eligible person?

  At less than 50% accuracy they were a waste of money before they even got to the country, let alone after expiry date.
  
  They are less accurate than a PCR test and the PCR test is basically useless when it is run at a CT (cycle threshold) higher than 27. In NZ, PCR tests are run at a CT of 45, a ludicrous number.
  
  Of course, in comparison to what we spent on the vaccines it’s the best money this Labour government ever spent……..//

  It is a private meeting on private property. You may be invited, you may not.
  Think of a wedding reception – private, no gatecrashers. The Groom may invite you in, he may not. Same thing.
  The protocol of the meeting is a speech by Julian Batchelor, with questions and answers at the end. Interrupting and making your own speech is not tolerated.
  Julian is only to happy to answer questions.
  When he asks “What did I say that is wrong?” they can’t answer.
  If the protesters want to have a private meeting, fine. But not in the middle of another private meeting.
  I was at the Orewa meeting. The protesters did not want to ask questions, they wanted to shut the meeting down by yelling and singing very loudly. The Police did nothing. Later the Police said to Julian “make the meetings private meetings, then the protesters are trespassing” Apparently if you write “This meeting is private, and you are trespassing” on paper and give it to a protester, they have been ‘served’ a notice. People on this blog may want to correct me on that.
  One of the sad things is the Police don’t even know the trespassing Law.
  Overall this means one thing – the Stop Co-Governance movement is gaining a lot of traction. There are many more meeting as the tour moves northwards now.

The nonsense started after the Waitangi Tribunal was created and re-wrote the Treaty being used today. The original known as the Littlewood draft is now in the bowels of Archives NZ, so it will never be found – or if it is found, it will be destroyed.
  The Treaty today mentions “Forestry and Fisheries” Forest and Fisheries were ‘never in the original Treaty. The name you are looking for as to did this was Sir Hugh Kawharu.

If there is one sector that should be at the top of the priority list for major reform – not tinkering or a little more of what is already happening – when the new Govt is elected, it is education.

If this country has any hope of returning to being a First World nation then deep education restructuring and a complete change of philosophy is needed. It will require a very determined and focused Minister, backed unequivocally by Cabinet to make the seismic changes required.

I am urging Seymour to take the job.

      When he goes to uni his first year will have quite a bit of stuff that he has already done at school. Has always been like this … that’s a bit of a waste somewhere.
      
      The alternative of course would be to run a high school system that was not focussed on the Pom model of learning more and more about less and less.
      
      When I was doing my PhD (engineering) in Canada I talked about this to some of my Canadian fellow students. Told them how we started calculus in year 12 (lower 6th ,,,). They were a bit surprised because they didn’t hit calculus until first year uni.
      
      I could not convince myself that I was either smarter or better educated that them ….

    In just another example of how this Labour government has done more to divide the country than any other government in history, Labour has effectively created a two-tier education system.
    
    The kids that are smart enough to understand what they need to get into the right university, course, or occupation, have been attending regularly, completing their assignments and making sure they do enough to qualify.
    
    The rest – most of whom would do just fine without the interruptions, masks, lockdowns, teacher shortages, curriculum changes and fear/paranoia stoked by the media – have been abandoned to what is likely to be a lifetime of welfare, just what Labour and the Greens want.

    I am thinking ACT will get around 17% to 18% of the vote and be much more than a sidekick to the Nats. It’s not so much “baubles” as taking the reins and steering critically important reforms. National is not inclined to make deep changes – they prefer to tinker. NZ urgently needs major reforms and ACT can and will lead that change.
    
    Education is the sector that needs strong, decisive leadership steering a suite of policy reforms more than all others for the long term good of the country.

This is the Ministry for the Environment explaining its approach to designing resource management in New Zealand.

  To be fair to Labour, for every bad Labour Minister of Education, and Tinetti is definitely scarping the bottom of the barrel, National have also, sadly, had their fare share of useless Ministers in the Education portfolio. The issue is we are continually tinkering and trying to save a broken system – sometimes you need someone to make the big call and start from scratch.
  
  I once took over an in-flight IT project fixing an existing system. The bills were huge, they were going to get ever larger, and after I carried out a bit of investigating work, it became very clear to me that the chances of success were slim to minimal – it would continue to suck in money and would never quite work and would always require tinkering to keep it semi-operational – great for the IT consultants, shit for the ratepayer. I killed it. We stopped the bleeding and put in a brand new, off-the-shelf system at a fraction of the cost that was proven to work – it was obviously the right call but it just needed someone who wasn’t stuck in the detail to realise the futility of chucking good money away.
  
  I think education is in a similar way. Like the above project, you can continue to tinker and throw money at the issue and hope it’ll magically turn around – and when you are in the system you simply can’t see the futility of working on a failed project, or you can do the brave thing – kill it, throw everything out and start from scratch, and like the IT project I mentioned, rather than design a custom solution, just go and buy something that fucking works, and implement it. There are numerous education models out there that work – we should grab one, ditch this “make believe Maori / pagan fairy shit” tack on, and get serious about education.

    Excellent point about that IT project PeeJay. Buy not make. It required a smart change in thinking to realise that. Asking all those business owners for their wet dreams would result in something that even if it worked would keep plenty of employees, contractors and suppliers in clover for years.
    
    Alternative is to ask why those business owners are not following standard industry processes, and tell them to sort themselves out.

      Thanks and good points artemisia. For me, the major point is that when you are “in the system” your solutions tend to be subject to bias that the system can be fixed – very few people with the authority and capacity to implement change, actually believe the organisation they are working in is broken and is effectively beyond change – heck, some of those within the system think it’s pretty good and just needs a bit more time – almost like the old communism is perfect but just hasn’t been done right yet argument. You see this with institutional bias in Education, with Health and with the RMA changes (and so many other departments). Sometimes you just need to stop trying to make a broken system work. Then the big challenge is not to spend ages reinventing the wheel because of our ‘unique circumstances’ – if some other country / company has a perfectly good system (and in education there are so many good examples we could just buy / borrow), don’t do a brand new custom job – just get something that is proven to work!

      Their ancestors did have pottery. It was fairly widespread in the Western Polynesia but the tech was lost before East Polynesia was settled. One theory is lack of resources but that doesn’t make sense for many of the Islands of West Polynesia that did have pottery.

    What is being described here is indigenous knowledge. It is possessed by all indigenous peoples. That does not make it science.
    
    That Maori learned to build houses and canoes and how to preserve food is hardly surprising. However like all people who did not apply the scientific method much of their ‘science’ was just luck. For example, they discovered that food could be preserved in fat. However they did not understand why that worked (cutting off oxygen and reducing bacteria reproduction). That is not science. Indeed without a written language and mathematics to record the results of experiments there is no science.
    
    A notable absence in Maori society was the use of metals and pottery, despite New Zealand having ample coal, copper, gold, clay and other minerals.
    
    The North Americans first mastered metallurgy 8,000 years ago.

  What they’ve got wrong is that they should adopt yhe African model.
  
  In Africa there is no dowry – it is the reverse. The women come with a bride price – you have to pay for them. In southern Africa this is called lobola/lobolo, the price traditionally being cattle.
  
  This is often seen by westerners as a form of slave trading, but more traditionally it is seen differently. Amongst other things, it shows the husband has the means to provide for his wife.
  
  As a result of this, girls are seen as valuable and don’t get aborted as much.

Police Minister Ginny Andersen has been forced to admit that violent crime is at a level never seen before, but she doesn’t know why that is. That admission is probably going to earn her a rebuke from Deputy PM Carmel Sepuloni who said earlier this week about crime “Oh I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all.”.

Well Ginny, maybe Labour’s policy of reducing the prison population by 30% might have something to do with it, don’tcha think. And Carmel; just for once you should listen to your Police Minister. Violent crime is a blight on the landscape, and your gaslighting will lose you the election.

    Rather than removing it wouldn’t it be nice if they addressed the content point by point and explain why it is wrong? By removing stuff without proper explanation it does nothing to expel the belief by more an more people that science as we once knew it is dead.

  From 1 July 2024, very few dairies will be able to sell tobacco. The number of retail outlets will fall from about 6,000 to 600. For example in Dunedin, there are currently 117 shops selling tobacco. That will decline to just four.
  
  Also, cigarettes will become much less attractive to rob. They will all be “ultra low nicotine”. If you are an addict why ae you going to pay $40 for that?

After all the discussions about maths and science etc yesterday, I thought I’d look at some NZ maths books and resources.

I was shocked.

Level 6 maths (if I have this right that’s year 11) were full of word stories: “Mr Daley bought some pigs,…”

Word stories might make problems easier to understand and relate to, but they destroy one of the most fundamental principles of mathematics: abstraction.

What is important for moving into the “maths space” in your head is to understand the abstraction and then be dealing with the properties of the numbers themselves. This is very hard to do if you’re constantly fed word stories.

As an example of this, can you think about 7 dimensions? Well in “maths space” that’s pretty easy, but if you’ve been raised on word stories then it is really difficult to comprehend anything further than 3 dimensions.

I recently saw a professional person (I wasn’t going to mention the profession, but bugger it, a GP) reaching for a calculator to multiply 5 of item A by 8. She then needed to perform the same calculation again 20 seconds later and reached for the calculator again to work out 5 of item B by 8. This is what word stories do: she didn’t see that 40 = 5 x 8 is a fundamental property of the numbers; she had to redo the calculation because she saw multiplying As as a different problem from multiplying Bs.

I suspect that the real reason maths is being dumbed down is that the teachers don’t understand, so things have to be kept in a simple space where the teachers can cope.

But you will be happy to know that the problems have also been translated into Maori so that nobody gets left behind.

  The further on you go in maths, the more abstract it is likely to become, but I don’t think many of us get to 7 dimensions.

    Yes, part of learning to use maths is using it for real world problems, but that should not be the bulk of maths problems. It should only be a small part (by Year 11 anyway).
    
    Look at any of these maths books that you can sample online and they’re end-to-end story problems with irrelevant pictures of dogs and pizzas.

    This country ( and just about every other) has had a history of the ‘failing tail’ in education.
    
    In NZ the failing tail , for whatever reason has been largely , but not exclusively Maoris.
    
    For at least the last 20 years our standard of education has not been aimed at the best or even the average , it has been aimed at trying to pass or educate the failing tail.
    
    But the failing tail has now become the failed body .
    
    The whole system has deliberatly been dumbed down , for race and ideology reasons .
    
    It’s now actually failed even the failures it was meant to save but has also brought many many more with it.
    
    never mind the so called climate crisis , we have an education crisis , which as others have said is literally a societal disaster and a time bomb…..

Watched Newshub last night these were the first 7 stories:

1. Oranga Tamariki – 13 staff now stood down over enticing violence.
2. Auckland Dairy raid and owner severely assaulted.
3. Hawkes Bay/Cyclone Gabrielle sediment & slips
4. Research: 1.2 million homes at risk of flooding
5. (Australian fire at detention centre)
6. (Leo Malloy fundraiser – menu was a hoot)!
7. NZ wool carpets overlooked by Ministry of Education.

Most of these stories had a political dimension (stories 1, 2, 3, 7 and potentially 4) and yet not one Labour Minister was willing to be interviewed. Even Lloyd Burr mentioned this at the end of his wool story (#7).

Here we have it, the gutless Labour Party MP’s too chicken to front the MSM – cowards the lot of them. And we pay them to duck and dive from their responsibilities.

October 14 can’t come soon enough – goodbye Labour you useless incompetent troughers!

  It is most unlikely to pass. Only 7 of 44 referendums have passed in the history of Australia. No referendum that was divisive and contentious prior to the vote has ever passed.
  
  Post WW2, the successful ones have been:
  
  Giving the Federal Government responsibility for social services.
  
  Giving the Federal Government responsibility for Aboriginal affairs and counting Aboriginals in the census
  
  Allowing residents of territories to vote in referendums.
  
  The process for filling casual Senate vacancies
  
  High Court judges to retire at 70

Just got an email from the Taxpayer Union around David stepping down from his formal role in TPU.
No scandal….actually a story of TPU success and so many competing demands, and also allowing for more time for David’s young boys.
Absolutely brilliant how much reach TPU has around subscribers.

My main point I wanted to make in posting this is a credit to David in how sober, measured and polite his own commentary upon, or as, posts are.
Slater can be acidic and offensive to some (even when he is 100% on the money), and Martyn Bradbury is almost without exception shrill, hysterical, and personally demeaning about his political opponents (even when he is 10% of the time on the money – despite literally recycling and Copy and Pasting his articles content).

In this polarised and ‘black and white’ world where more than ever ideology and internet algorithms are creating Us and Them narratives, I want to acknowledge David for his unusually civilised commentary on politics.
Even when the “barbarians are inside the gates”, “the lunatics are running the asylum”, David always plays the ball and not the man.
Dare I say it, but centrist or rightist people do well with undecided people by appearing more sane, pragmatic, and generally recognising some humanity in their opponents to contrast with the demonising and over-blown emotion favored by the ideological leftists.

These are just meaningless numbers to the average voter because they are numbers that people cannot comprehend. It’s just a 5 with a bunch of zeros after it. What’s a couple of zeros between mates?

People can have an emotional reaction to $50, $500, $5k. Heck even a $33million lotto ticket. But $5bn. Nope.

If National wants to use these numbers then they need to put them into a perspective that people can understand:
* schools
* roads
* hospitals
* nurses
* …

$50bn (or was it $150bn?) was blown to “save us”. Imagine the longterm health outcomes that would have been possible spending just a tiny fraction of that revamping our hospitals to handle the waiting lists?

Find the country with the lowest crime rate. Again, copy what they are doing.

      Consider the contrast between a smash and grab or a ram raid posted with glee onto social media for the other feral cretins, and a ‘youth offender’ grinning in court to – literally having your arse cheeks flayed off, and sleeping on you belly for a month, and all your peers knowing what happened.

  I agree with that and have commented on it a couple of times. However it would provide some challenges. If you look at the science and maths curriculums in Finland, Estonia, Singapore, and Taiwan – all top performers – would most New Zealand teachers be able to teach these subjects?

  We don’t need to copy others. We just need to dust off the curriculum, methods, and values of 20 or whatever years ago when NZ was doing well.
  
  Copying people and not understanding WHY is just cargo-cult mentality.
  
  During WW2, the Americans were landing big cargo planes filled with Nice Things at their Pacific bases. The locals wanted Nice Things too, so try started copying the Americans with the hope they could get the planes to bring them Nice Things.
  
  They built short “runways”. But the planes didn’t land on them – they kept landing at the American base.
  They put up a flag pole with a nice flag. The planes didn’t come.
  They dressed up in green clothing and marched up and down in squads. Still the planes did not come.
  
  Why, they asked, are the planes still going to the Americans and bringing them Nice Things? Why are they not coming to us? Not even one!
  
  Copying stuff doesn’t work unless all the other important factors are in place.
  
  School failure is very little to do with just the curriculum. It is the value that people put on education that matters the most. While Maori kids see doing well at school etc is “acting white”, they will not do well.
  
  Ditto health system. Those countries with the best health systems are not obese KFC munchers.
  
  As for sorting out crime, well the police and courts are only the end of the tunnel. What is really missing is respect for citizens and their property.

      It used to be, not very long ago, abhorrent to even consider female genital mutilation in kids – now it’s perfectly fine if it’s ‘gender-affirming care.’
      
      Not long ago racial discrimination was a huge, massive no no. Think South Africa. Now it’s perfectly fine, it all depends on whether your intentions are correct.
      
      It used to be that tolerance and free speech were bastions of the left. Quite recently in fact. Now they have no tolerance whatsoever for views they don’t agree with and regard free speech as violence, often equivalent to genocide, and in need of curtailing.

  Yep our strict anti-nuclear stance is a relic of a bygone era (a Cold War nuclear war scenario obliterating the northern hemisphere).
  
  Fast forward to today. Whilst there is a threat (of sorts) of US/China confrontation over Taiwan, I don’t believe anyone (foreign policy analysts) have posited the US and China will resort to nuclear escalation? So where is the “nuclear threat” that we (NZ) is still afraid of?
  
  I say time to change our legislation to have greater flexibility in allowing nuclear powered vessels (and future Australian subs) to visit if our Govt of the day is satisfied there isn’t a danger, that steps are taken to mitigate risk and compensation etc.
  
  I believe this is more-or-less what David Lange originally wanted until Helen Clark and her Labour apparatchiks ram-raided their “uncompromising anti-American” position through!

Insurance costs for Britain’s electric cars …

Electric cars that sustain minor bumps are being kept 15 meters apart in repair yards over fears they might explode, reports the Telegraph.

This is pushing up costs for insurers, and the costs are passed on in premiums – bills to owners.

An automotive risk firm, Thatcham Research, says insurers will need to spend an additional 900 million pounds a year on quarantine facilities for damaged cars as a result of the safety measures by 2035, as more battery-powered vehicles take to the roads.

The firm says the extra costs risk adding 20 pounds year on to all car-insurance premiums.

Under present guidelines, two damaged electric cars can fit into the space that would fit 100 petrol or diesel cars.

Meanwhile, reports the Telegraph, placement of the battery within electric cars can make it more likely that it will be damaged and written off after a minor accident, according to experts.

Common designs place batteries underneath the car, leaving them susceptible to damage from minor accidents such as mounting the kerb.

    Tesla, and others, have put out guides for emergency response people. The scary part is that every vehicle type needs a different guide and they expect everyone to have different training/methods in place for a Y vs a 3 or whatever!

      It will be whatever they decide it to be and I’d add that over time it will only become deeper, more entrenched, more widespread and will move from the state sphere into both the private and business spheres.
      
      Private organisations and businesses will be committing an ‘injustice’ if they are not co-governed and if they won’t give in voluntarily it will be forced upon them by the power of the state.

Good for her. She’s doing what Kiwis themselves are afraid to do, and stand up against the rabid mob.

We all saw what happened at Albert Park. The police failed in their duty, manipulated by the media and by their woke masters, cowardly standing by while women were violently assaulted and begged for them to intervene.

So, NZ men need to stand up and protect these women. They need to be there in numbers and stand between the groups to keep order and to protect these women from the mob. The police have shown they are unwilling to do their duty in this regard. Time to step up.

I rang my doctors surgery at 9.00am today to make an emergency appointment. I have an immune disease that makes me very sick and needs urgent treatment. I was told that because of the health service crisis appointments are now being made for 5 weeks time and there’s no more emergency spaces today. I was told I should go to the after hours clinic that opens at 5.00pm. As what I have is a rare condition the doctors will have no clue and I will have to tell him what I need and get charged the $90 after hours fee.

    I emailed my GP a week ago, and among other things the email was for (that shouldn’t require taking up a consult slot) told him I had chest pains while walking.
    
    He emails back and says make an appointment.
    
    The first one available was 5 days after that. Not the first one at a suitable time. The first one. And it was the only one available that day, the second most available time was some days after that.

      I think it comes down to the lifestyle the gp wants. They come down here, don’t have to work as hard as in the cities. At my gp’s clinic there are a couple of younger doctors who just work 4 days a week. Clinic has no trouble getting gp’s, there are about 14 doctors there now they just got a new Chinese doctor. The ED isn’t that bad either, wait times aren’t as long as elsewhere. Funny thing is before Covid people were flying down from Auckland to go to the dentist down here because it was cheaper than Auckland, and easier to get an appointment

Kellie Jay Keen just announced that she is returning to New Zealand in September for the court hearing of the person who assaulted her.

It is worth listening to this account of her time in New Zealand. She claims she was detained for a long time at Auckland airport on arrival. Customs searching every inch of her luggage. Was told she was just picked “at random”.

Tracked down at the hotel. Threats under the door.

RNZ tracked her down and asked her what she thought of Marama Davidson “being injured by one of her supporters”. (Marama was supposedly run over by a guy on a motor bike – totally unrelated to Kellie Jay.)

More revelations – the trans person who assaulted her, Eli Rubashkyn, has, Kellie Jay alleges, been taunting her by email – and wait for it – has been sending Kellie Jay naked pictures of him/her self. (Note that I am carefully wording this as an allegation, not as a fact.)

But why are those images captured on their security camera always sooo darn blurry?

We’ve got a sophisticated gate security system that starts recording the moment someone presses our buzzer. Not only can we view the person in detail, but the recording plays live on FB to a number of selected besties. Clear as you’d get at IMAX.

Surely the Dairy owners could install a quality setup like ours ffs.

    Now, OK, tattoos are ancient, and really, who gives a shit. Each to their own. My father had a few, mainly from his time in WWII. But tats in certain places evoke certain ideas, and a tat below the mouth descending to the chin suggests you had perhaps overindulged and the excess dribbled out. Nothing to be ashamed of, we’ve all been there. Accidents happen.
    
    But you don’t need advertise it permanently. Like Manson with a swastika carved into his forehead.
    
    There’s a Maori girl on state-funded TV with a moko. She has suspect diction in English, but I’m sure she speaks Maori beautifully. She seems like a very nice person and would be otherwise very attractive, to my eyes at least, but the tat distracts. It’s like giving Aphrodite a nasty pimple just for the hell of it.
    
    Rawiri Waititi on the other hand, his full-face tattoo seems to suit the man’s personality to a tee. Buyer beware.
