It has taken years to change laws that were passed under Geoffrey Palmer former Labour MP and Prime Minister and it seems that we might be in the same predicament with another Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern after her opology’s over the dawn raids when she neglected to have the law changed to fit her staged opology to the Pacific Islanders who suffered from they dawn raids .

    There will always be dawn raids. The five reasons for them are:
    1. The person sought is most likely to be at home.
    2. It minimises the chance of other wanted people being tipped off that there is planned police action.
    3. It minimises the chance of evidence being flushed down the gurgler.
    4. It catches the person of interest off-guard so the person may blurt out more than he would normally do.
    5. The police have a big day ahead of them – getting the paperwork done and the offenders before a judge – so an early start is needed.
    
    The most amusing one was in London where Police wanted a rich newspaper owner. Mr Plod banged on the door. A window above opened and a voice yelled “Who are you? F*** Off. I will call the Police.”. “We are the Police” the reply came back. Not sure whether the Police used the big red ‘master key’.

    The problem was that they were targeting anyone with Pacific ancestry without any reason to believe people in the household were in NZ illegally.
    
    Somehow that has now morphed into the absurd idea that, even when authorities know where an overstayer is located, they shouldn’t go there early in the morning.

  It’s become ever more clearer that Jacinda Ardern was just a one trick pony…….’an expert in stage managed performative empathy’………perhaps more useful in the student Union or local amateur dramatics group.
  
  As PM she sought every opportunity to engage in this activity allied with associated dress up for added dramatics and bonus point global virtue signalling.
  
  However when the chips are down a Nation’s leader needs to be so much more. However her lack of leadership led to a succession of party distractions especially with race based politics; poor ministerial behaviour and lack of accountability; and ultimately an inability of government to delivery anything the electorate actually wanted. What’s more clearer each day is the economic distress our Nation is actually in, which is likely to last an Ardernity.

  It’s really easy to avoid Dawn Raids. All visitors to NZ simply need to do is to conform to the terms of their visa and depart within the allotted timeframe.
  
  If they like the place so much that they’d like to live here, then there is a process by which they can apply from their home country.

Watching the tv propaganda about supermarket watchdog and power companies enquiry .
The elephant in the room is people can’t afford either because the government increased tax take by over 50percent.

The emotionally charged figure of supermarkets earning a million dollars a day excess profits (whatever that means) works out at 16c each, yet the government is taking an extra 30 billion in tax and rising .
That works out at an extra $14 each every day.
The supermarkets 16c doesn’t look too bad compared.

  The duopoly excess profits supermarkets take in was baked in more than a decade ago anyway and as you point out is practically a rounding error. That’s not to say Clark\Cullen’s decision to allow the reduction in supermarkets from 3 to 2 wasn’t an immensely stupid one.

    I have to disagree withe your statement that the Clark/Cullen decision from 2002 has not contributed to inflation. In 2002 centre of store profit in a PAKnSAVE was around the 6% mark and somewhere around 12-15% for Countdown and New World. Today it sits at around 15-18% for PAKnSAVE and 25-32% for New World and Countdown.

        I have been involved in the supply side of the supermarket industry for over 40 years. Not prepared to divulge my source as I still have a small interest in it. However, I stand by my numbers.
        
        And BTW, we’re talking gross margins. Plus, I fully accept that gross margins have been scaled back a wee bit over the last 24 months or so as supermarkets have not passed on the full impact of supplier price increases.

        @John Loveridge – The Other Enoch’s numbers are misleading. Gross margins are a nonsense number to use as they don’t include overheads. They do not include costs that have to happen and must be paid for by someone. NZ supermarkets have high distribution costs for instance. The only sensible number is net margin.
        
        Typical numbers out of the US – Grocery Stores have a gross margin of ~25% and net margin of ~2%, Packaged foods similar, Publishing 50% gross and it makes a loss.
        
        Worked in the supermarket industry at the head office of a chain (admittedly some time ago) and internationally net supermarket margins have been typically in the region of 3%. Pre the duopoly NZ had similar numbers. Post the duopoly and reasonably quickly these doubled. As the Commerce Commission only looked at 2015-2019 there is no way from their analysis to know when it kicked in but there were other analyses showing net margins ~6% well before that. Now, according to the Commerce Commission as of 2019 we were all paying an extra $1.60 per week extra because of the duopoly. Translating that to the 10+% food inflation we are now getting beggars belief. Assuming they keep similar excess margins let’s be generous and say they are now getting an extra 50% profit so we are seeing an extra 80c per person per week since 2019. I do the supermarket shopping it’s massively more than that. The supermarkets would have to increase their net margin’s enormously to be a significant contributor to inflation. No-one is that greedy or stupid. This is all a “Look Squirrel!” exercise by Labour.

  New board member elected to Commerce Commission.
  Pierre van Heerden has been appointed as Grocery Commissioner for a five-year term and starts his role on 13 July 2023.
  The Commerce Commission is funded through a combination of revenue from the Crown (general taxes) and industry levies.
  He will probably be paid about $200k per year, and will also require administrative staff, IT support, a car, expense account, and somewhere to work.
  So the total cost will probably be more like $3m for the 5-year period.
  He will also be without any power to do anything, despite his comments this morning on Hosking’s show.
  The Government would be much better-off giving this money directly to food banks.

    He will not stop the sharp practices of the FMCG/supplier and supermarket sector. The practices mean a closed shop to supplying goods to consumers and that prices will always remain high and determined by Countdown and Foodstuffs (& their franchise operators).

  This is how this Government operates. It claims that supermarkets are taking $1,000,000 in extra profit per day.
  
  Firstly, what the hell is “Extra Profit?”
  
  Secondly, Woolworths and Foodstuffs operate 515 outlets between them, which works out to an average extra profit per outlet per day of a whopping $1942.00 dollar per day, which puts it into proper perspective.

Kiwiblog readers who watched last night’s TV3 news would have seen the lead story about the Pacific Island community protesting that “dawn raids” still occur. The story was bereft of balence.

In a previous life I worked at Immigration and only the reason for “Dawn Raids” is that is the most likely time to catch illegal immigrants before they go off to work for the day. Illegal immigrants mostly all work, they certainly can’t get welfare, so they have to have a job to survive.

It is a complete waste of tax-payer money to have Immigration Officers visit the homes of illegal migrants only during daylight hours – they are simply not there, they are at work – whereever that might be. And then, any neighbours who see the Officers visiting are on the ‘phone warning the illegal immigrants not to come home.

Of course the media will never include this information in their reporting, it does not suit their agenda. “Dawn raids” are the most cost-efficent way for New Zealand to detain and remove people living illegally in this country, and we must continue this policy.

Singapore has the solution. Employers who hire foreign employees without valid work permits are liable to a fine of at least $5,000 and not exceeding $30,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, per charge. They will also be barred from employing foreigners.

  Question to all. I have always struggled to understand how these people work. I am assuming that they are not paying taxes / providing an IRD #. Therefore their employer would not be paying PAYE to IRD and not recording the wages on their financial reports. So when one of theses people are identified, is the employer in serious trouble for financial fraud?

    I think but am not sure that IRD does not require proof of visa status to issue an IRD number, and they do not data share with other Govt agencies (there are good reasons for this).
    
    The other way is that an overstayer uses someone else’s IRD number, perhaps someone who has gone home or whatever.

A city in Delaware has a proposal set to be voted upon which would grant businesses (inc trusts, partnerships, etc.) the right to vote alongside residents in the cities elections.

Arguably in NZ businesses contribute more to cities and regions than many of their residents and if as it is suggested we require Maori Wards to ensure representation, an equal or greater argument can be made for other entities.

    I don’t really care HOW you learn, it’s whether what you learn is of value in setting you up for the future.
    We home schooled our kids for about 9 years, and they all had different learning styles. One used to start at 6:30 am when I got up to go to work, and was normally finished with her assigned work by 8:00. The other used to lie behind the couch and work through his books from top to bottom, with the pile changing over every day. Today my kids all have a tertiary qualification, or 2 and are making a good contribution to society. This is the Way! (with acknowledgements to The Mandalorian)

  I don’t have a problem with teaching te Ao but do it with conventional modernist thinking so that when they are adults they are not lost causes to society.

  The owner of the company has said he’s going to appeal this decision. He’s obviously unaware of procedure which got him into this position in the chest place. He’s in the wrong. I support the bus driver’s actions 💯 Imagine if there had been an accident. The whinging parents would be wanting to sue her for negligence. I remember being in a school bus and some boys were fighting. The bus driver had to stop the bus and break it up. There was no way he could continue driving with what was going on. He may have kicked their arses for good measure if my memory serves me correctly.

My Wife had to take her Daughter to hospital yesterday in an ambulance due to a seizure. (Daughter is Intellectually handicapped) After waiting in the ambulance for a couple of hours and daughter having seemed to recover they looked at trying to get a discharge as they were told it was going to be still many hours for a doctor and the wait for a bed would be 30 hours (if required). Looked at going to a after hours medical centre and told it was a 6 hour wait and would have to be referred from the hospital. Managed to find another medical centre in another town that could see her. When seizures have happened in the past there was never any wait in an ambulance and if requiring to be kept in hospital never a 30 hour wait for a bed. (Maybe 4-5 hours from arriving) . It is stunning to see the change in service for what is the same issue

  The rumour that Doctors and Nurses can get +50% more wages in Australia is a conspiracy theory. The actual amount is double (+100%).
  
  And the promised wage increases and back pay here is an election ploy, kept back for several years, to be released just prior to election to get maximum media traction.
  
  The DHBs employ nearly 200 communication people to bullshit, lie and massage public opinion. Those tens of millions of dollars annually would be better off spent paying front line staff, and fixing the broken systems.
  
  The technology systems do not provide easily accessible timely and/or historical information for critical care.
  
  Thousands of managers, clipboard NAZIs, and arrogant IT staff, who wouldn’t know what a rectal thermometer was if it was shoved up their derriere, continue to create unworkable systems and processes that bear no resemblance to the problems they are supposed to fix.
  
  And the good nurses and doctors, many of whom I have met and whom I respect, and for whom their vocation is a passion or calling, are being metaphorically beaten around the head every day for asking sensible questions.

    Until about 3 years ago I was significantly involved in one of the DHBs as a system support consultant, and at the time the systems were actually very good at this DHB and provided excellent information across the hospital for staff and patient management. One became acutely aware of how good it was when anything went wrong and the system was off line for just a few minutes.
    Nurses could manage staff from check in through to discharge from any station, including hand held devices, and were very aware of their targets. Things like time since check in were constantly monitored and balanced against criticality.
    IT Staff were hard working and certainly not arrogant, and understood how important the systems were. If things have gone so far down hill I lay the blame at the door of the current government and Ministry of Health.

      Yes, it has gone rapidly downhill in the last 3 years. A few minutes outage would be what you should expect.
      
      Christchurch had a 5-6 day outage in critical systems in early May, and you heard nothing about it on the media. Took another 3 weeks to bring calendars and bookings.
      
      And that is on top of a days power outage, including backup power outage earlier in the year.

Over the years some of us have mused about the IQ of NZ voters, and whether there should be required levels of IQ before people get the right to vote. Well this morning I am going one step further, there needs to tests, qualification requirements on people becoming MPs and even most definitely being a cabinet Minister or even Acting Prime Minister.

There are many cliches along the lines of “if in doubt, don’t open your mouth, lest you confirm to those listening that you are an idiot” or “when in am hole stop digging”.

This morning, NZ’s Acting PM demonstrated admirably to those listening to Mike Hosking’s show this morning that:
She is clueless;
She doesn’t pay attention to events;
We should be grateful she is not Minister of Foreign Affairs;
It’s ok to waste $500mill on expired RATS tests, because Australia have got 500mill expired RATs tests; and
She either doesn’t understand what she is told when she is briefed or she doesn’t listen.

This woman is digging a hole to new depths of ineptitude or incompetence, it is hard to tell which!

  The RAT tests were never reliable, and under actual use scenarios produce random results. They were never evaluated or tested before use, to find that out. And that is clearly stated on Medsafe’s website.
  
  The government broke every rule in the test and measurement standards book, and ignored certification and verification process. Their decision was based on reading the marketing blurb, all because the PM’s office said so.
  
  They were effectively a placebo with about as much use as a baby dummy – to pacify the public, create false positives to boost fear, and allow people ongoing time off work to break businesses.

  -How many people live in these countries?
  -How many people die of excess heat every year anyway?
  
  When Ardern was jumping for joy over nearly 3000 dead from CV-19 in this country, she forget to include the context that this figure was the same as the flu deaths that conveniently hit zero over the same time period.
  
  And far less than 11,000-15,000 that normally die over that time period from all respiratory diseases, and related complications.
  
  And when NZ annual data on all causes of death after 2018 has mysteriously disappeared down a black hole, you have no choice but to smell a dead rat.

  I have been deemed to be needing surgery for a condition I have (no small hurdle to jump on its own), at the Horth Shore Hospital.
  Because of the delay and lack of treatment, I was admitted as an emergency case May last year to drain a serious infection the operation would have prevented, this required general anesthetic, but they still wouldn’t perform the procedure.
  I am coming up on my 4th year on the waiting list. I was told the surgery was only days away back in September last year.
  I strongly suspect I have the wrong skin colour. Considering the horror stories I am hearing, I am not holding my breath for this surgery to happen anytime soon.
  In times past I would have just gone private but this is not an option due to personal circumstances now.
  
  My opinion of this govt and their OBSCENE incompetence has gone from mockery, to annoyance, to derision and now to despisement.
  I have at least equal anger towards the MSM (with a handful of exceptions) whom are the enablers and propagandists for the govt. They have betrayed their profession, they are meant to be the gate keepers, the watchers on the wall but they have descended to govt sycophants and scum.

    I would not blame North Shore Hospital. They have been great to me (cubital tunnel surgery – funny bone ulnar nerve moved) Other elbow will be done soon – before Christmas. The problem is the lack of a surgeon who does what you need. Also the shortage of Anesthetists.
    This goes right back to Arden’s Government running the Health System down. Chippie can only be partly blamed – he was Health Minister.

  That would be the Employment Relations Authority who awarded her $20,000 for wrongful dismissal.
  
  Personally, I thought she handled the situation very well and she should have been supported by her employer. The angry parents should have been put in their place by the Bus Company and told that this was a safety issue, and the safety of our passengers and employers is paramount.     The bus driver would have still got the sack. What the driver did was correct. Dare I say it, but it was a Health & Safety issue & the driver followed the safest course of action.
    
    Problem is the company is a commercial operation (& unless it is a MoE contract) they could be vulnerable to the school finding another operator. In short, the parties at fault were the school and the company management. Appealing the matter will only make the company (and Little) look even more stupid than they already are.

      The parents appear to have rung the school. It will have then been the school pressuring the company. Rather than telling the parents the uncomfortable truth about their little darlings. Kids on and their behaviour on school buses has always been an issue since there have been school buses. If the driver is distracted because of the kids’ behaviour there is a health and safety issue, and what happened to the driver at the hands of the employer was just wrong and unjust.

    Yes it is un-winable. Nothing like Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Off topic, after the Korean War my Uncle (in the Army) went back to Japan and brought a bride home. Unheard of after WW2. But he was stationed somewhere and was able to get hold of Aunty Meniko and marry her. My mother sent her wedding dress to Japan as Uncle could not afford it.
    Anyway I ended up with 4 kiwi/japanese cousins. Aunty was in Hiroshima when it happened. She never talked about it much but she saw it all. Lost her family. As a result of the nuclear fallout she never suffered and died at 81. One of my cousins is on deaths door, inherited medical issues. Other 3 are just fine.

    If all this isn’t outrageous enough, the govt has dedicated (IIRC) something like $80 million to prop us this silly artifice. Money that will most likely come from the GST collected on groceries.
    
    The Soviets brought Russia to a sad economic end with this kind of centralised economic BS. What a shame NZers (and Nicola Willis in particular) are apparently so ignorant of that history.

The University of Canterbury signed a memorandum of understanding in late 2018, allowing students to study in New Zealand for two of its master’s programmes.

During the Covid Mandate era we were told by media and on this blog, that comparing Ardern’s regime to the Nazis was wrong despite the similarities: medical experimentation, state control, state funded media, 2 classes of people, carrying passports and banning the underclass from stores and business and work. That the Holocaust was a horrific atrocity so it was wrong to make comparisons.

So my question is why is it ok for Ardern to use the Christchurch atrocity as the brand name for her online media censorship project. By hiding her online censorship project under a cloak of an atrocity she hopes to avoid genuine debate, even though social media paid very little roll in the Christchurch atrocity.

After having a blanket put on her head to apologise for events 40 years ago you would think that she or her Ministers would have thought that having raids continue would be a bad look and would have issued instructions to the MBIE CE to stop them, and to follow up with a question to the CE at their regular meetings whether any had been carried out ?.

National rose one point to 36 per cent, as did likely governing partner Act which is on 12 per cent.

    Labour down five points, and Hipkins down six points. That’s going to be a bitter pill for Labour’s remaining shills to swallow.
    
    And of course it won’t take into account the latest round of price rises consequent to petrol going up on 1st July. The nervous Labour back bench just got a whole lot more desperate, with a few more MP’s facing political oblivion in 97 days time.
    
    Sure, this is only one poll, but lets watch the trend now as Kantar, Reid Research, Curia and Roy Morgan poll over the next month and see if it is repeated.

I went to pickup some RATs this morning from my local pharmacy in Christchurch. I though I’d do my bit to reduce the excess stock. But I was told that they only had 5 boxes in stock. The irony was not lost on me…
Carmel Sepuloni told Mike Hosking this morning that it is better to have an over supply of RATs than an under supply, but it turns out that with sufficient bureaucracy, that these are not mutually exclusive situations!

Stuff says Woman leaves rental home because it is cold and damp. The house is fully compliant with the current healthy home laws and insulated. She doesn’t want to turn on the heater because it costs money.
Are landlords the only ones who can be compelled by law to make a home healthy and warm and mould free. Can landlords require the tenant to care for the home and themselves and turn the heaters or dehumidifiers on ?
NZ’s discussion of warm homes almost always ignores heating, as if insulation is the only factor.

The UK advises “If you seriously want to avoid mold in your home then avoid rooms cooling completely. Experts recommend that the ideal temperature for living rooms is 20°C, 23°C for the bathroom and children’s rooms, and 16C for the bedroom and kitchen. It is recommended that you never let the temperature of your home fall below 14°C”

One of NZ’s most gruesome crimes. Ashley Winter transgender previously Shane Toko Winter tortured and murdered Dimetrius Pairama. Recent article she is just described as a woman and of a very large size and strength

But previously.
“.. witness will say it was at this point Winter and the accused began cutting Pairama’s hair. The accused is also alleged to have used an aerosol can and a cigarette lighter as a makeshift blow-torch to burn Pairama’s chest and genitals.”

And then they hung her.

The attack targeted the young woman’s sexuality her hair, breasts and genitals.

When did Ashley transition. Was she a female at the time of the attack. Any prior history of violence?

  Many murders do not justify capital punishment IMO. Especially when there is any doubt, even remotely, of the person’s guilt because there is only limited or no physical evidence. Scott Watson is one example.

    No matter how carefully intended, capital punishment always kills a proportion of convicted persons who are innocent of the crime for which they have been convicted.

So the Hamilton – Auckland train is banned from Auckland because it runs red lights. And a fix to ensure it does not run red lights will take at least 12 months.

I can see the next Government killing that thing stone dead.

    Auckland suburban trains have some automated system that brakes the train if the driver runs a red light. The Hamilton train does not have such a system.
