      I read recently that victims are generally not present at Family Group Conferences.
      
      I was astonished. I thought they were there for the offender to meet the victim and gain some insight, apologise, and for the victim to get some sense of agency, and remorse (or not) from the offender.
      
      Now it seems it’s just a “johnny is a good boy, it’s all because our benefit isn’t enough”

        I am not surprised. I had to attend a family group conference following a break in of our work premises. The little s**t responsible dis not even turn up – we was glue sniffing somewhere. He had a list a mile long including stealing a Ministerial car and crashing it into a wall. A researcher contacted me and asked if she could attend and I said I had no objection. At the Conference some Maori woman relative went on an ego trip and said she was not welcome and she had to leave. If I was there on my own behalf I would have torn strips off her then walked out.

I’ll bet the traditional chocolate fish that the overwhelming majority of these firms are run by people from the same country as those being shat upon – and most of them immigrants themselves.

      The problem is all these people need an infrastructure. They, and everybody else can’t exist without it.
      The NZ population has increased by about 40 % in the last 30 years. There’s no corresponding expansion of infrastructure. That’s why the health system collapsed and that’s why there’s a housing shortage.

      In terms of actual paying spectators, it isn’t the largest sporting event that’s been here. Did they manage to SELL out Eden Park last night? I very much doubt it is even the largest worldwide TV audience for an NZ event.
      Soccer is the world’s largest professional sport and has the largest TV audiences, but woman’s soccer is a very tiny part of that.

  If you’d stopped at “supporters” you would have got an uptick Mike. Before declaring this to be “our most massive sporting event”, perhaps we should wait to see what sorts of crowds matches like the Philippines versus Switzerland and Costa Rica versus Zambia draw.
  
  RWC 2011 set a very high bar, both in terms of attendance at matches and general public interest and participation.

    I watched the second half of the NZ Norway game shortly after Ryan Fox started his descent to oblivion.
    My take aways as a long time player (and still playing if it can be so described) were:
    The goal was well constructed and simple. Route one essentially with a poacher doing the finishing. There were a couple of promising through balls that werent capitalised upon through lack of pace.’
    Being picky, close control was lacking, passes going to nowhere and two glaring misses. first the penalty and second a player falling over, for no real reason, in the act of shooting.
    Still I am pleased for the sake of the tournament that the NZ women won.
    Lets hope they do well against the Philipines and can hold the line against Switzerland

Just an update on the planned visit to Auckland by Kellie Jay Keen on 20 September. In addition to attending the court hearing of the person charged with assaulting her, she also plans on holding a major event along the lines that caused the riot a few months ago.

More flights yesterday, and more safety cosplay from our aviation security folks. Does anyone really believe their passive-aggressive theatre, including barking at the shuffling queue of passengers, Keeps You Safe™?

After shedding my wicked, terror-supporting garments that include shoes above the ankle, a suit jacket, a belt, a wallet, two coins, the phone and thereafter being one item of clothing away from inappropriateness, the x-ray buzzed (WTF?!?) and I was sidelined to have my privates imaged in the full body scanner. Who will wind back this safetyism fetish?

Oh, and where safety is truly important, AirNZ instead continues to force on us ethno-cultural propaganda flaccidly disguised as a safety briefing.

Madness, all of it.

  Unfortunately the regime cannot be unwound because New Zealand is subject to the screening protocols agreed by international convention. The EU and the USA are in charge.
  
  If you fly regularly, there are things you can do to make things smoother. I never carry anything in my pockets. Everything goes in my small carry on bag.
  
  I end up in the body scanner about one third of the time. I still have not figured it out. I also have my carry on singled out for searching about every 4th visit. They rarely find anything..

    My attitude and process as well. Anything that could trigger the scanners goes into my carry on except my glasses. That way I have almost nothing lying losse in the trays and nothing on me.
    The last flight was funny though because I wear braces to hold my trousers up (I can’t stand belts) and these have 5 small metal clips that sometimes trigger the scanner, sometimes not. The last flight they triggered everything, but randomly from different places across my body.
    I’m flying to Christchurch soon, and to South Africa early next year and thinking of stuffing these into the carry on as well. I’ll just have to hold my pants up with my hands.

      I got through security in Wellington with a pair of nail scissors. The guard measured them against a rule and deemed them OK. They are about 13cm long, very sharp and quite capable of doing a bit of damage.

      I have a small folding knife.. razor sharp. I take it tramping. Anyway somehow it ended up in my carryon. It got picked up in the x ray. The guy measured it as 5 cm and I was good to go. 😳 It could slice someone open. Go figure.

    BY, as someone who has flown regularly and been to many airports around the world, and therefore seen a lot of airport security, what has struck me is the number of times I’ve seen Security that is no more than a middle aged suburban male/female sitting in a chair looking at a screen. From their looks you know they haven’t got a clue what they are doing. Then I’ve also been through airports where the wrong comment would have you in jail fast than Usain Bolt doing the 100 metres.
    
    The reality is we all want to be safe when we travel, but we have to accept there are inherent risks every time we travel through an airport, whether it be because of the processes, the officials, the people doing the job as “Security”, or our fellow travellers.

  Has anyone questioned Chris Luxon as to whether he will get rid of all covid regulations? It’s something that sorely needs to happen in my opinion.
  
  This morning as I gazed at the traffic outside my office, here in Masterton, I saw an older couple driving a car, waiting in traffic. She was driving and he was in the passenger seat. They had their windows wound up. And both were wearing masks?? What is the point of a couple sitting in a car wearing masks, with the windows closed?
  
  Last week I saw a young woman, probably early 20s, walking down a suburban street wearing a mask. There was no one around her in the whole street. She was alone but wearing a mask, outside, what is the purpose of that?
  
  This government is still pushing boosters. In Masterton hospital we still have to wear a mask when we visit people and the staff all still have to wear masks. At Masterton medical you are supposed to wear a mask when you visit the doctor.
  
  Can someone please put a halt to this covid madness?

      And yes, I want people to get rid of their masks. I don’t want a law or regulation about that. But I would like it to be socially unacceptable to wear a mask. People that wear a mask are saying, “feel free to lock me down at any time. I have now adopted a covid lifestyle.”

    Scott – if you are exempt from wearing a mask you don’t have to wear one anywhere, including hospital. Whether as a patient or a visitor.
    
    You don’t need any evidence of exemption. You are exempt if you choose to be. You don’t need to tell anyone what your reason for exemption is. You can get an exemption card free of charge and free of any examination from the Covid 19 people.
    This might make you feel better presenting the card to anyone asking, but it is NOT a requirement.
    
    My exemption is for mental and physical reasons. Wearing an utterly useless mask that does nothing to protect me or anyone else from an airborne respiratory virus, causes me irritation and restricts my oxygen intake.

    That paragraph makes the previous apparent rules completely void. I had this confirmed in a personal email to the people who run the website.

  As well as the sidelining to the body scanner, there is the anxious moment when your tray of hand luggage pauses after coming out of the scanner, and then suddenly rolls sideways and off down the inspection conveyor. I have had this happen about 1 in 10 times, often to be informed that they think they saw a loose battery, but they have never found it. Digging into my bag recently I realised there was in fact a loose stylus battery that I hadn’t been aware was there. It’s no longer there, but this does beg the question about how well the bags are searched and what’s the point of all the vigorous scanning if they can’t find something like a battery.
  The RM Williams boots I usually wear were described when I bought them about 10 years ago as ‘Airport Friendly’ – no steel in them. Sadly the airports have unfriended them now.

  I should add, aircraft today are extremely difficult to hijack (the recent Apple TV series makes laughable errors in support of the script). For example, both Airbus and Boeing have in-flight telemetry monitoring devices (including cameras), and have a range of remote control capabilities the majority of which are not disclosed, which is telling in its own right.

  Why allow the easy way out by resigning? Dismissal is called for and if, as I suspect it may be, Judges can’t be dismissed, then Parliament must change the laws to ensure that they can and at the same time introduce a “3 strikes” for dismissed / allowed appeals against a Judges rulings which has the same dismissal result. NO EXCEPTIONS OR VARIATIONS, DISMISSAL.

  Court of Appeal precedents determine sentences. If a judge starts handing out longer ones then the defence will appeal and win. Unless we clean out the CA and put in judges who care about public safety, there’s not much other judges can do on their own.
  
  I have repeated this many times but people still don’t get it. When Chris Penk is the Attorney General, he needs to carefully vet the judges he appoints to the Court of Appeal to ensure they are not soft on crime. This is not something National has ever bothered doing before.
  
  He should also, directly or indirectly, try to move on the bad judges in the CA (which is most of them). Either appointing them to other jobs where they can’t do any harm or even by passing legislation limiting their terms if necessary.

There can be no better example of how out of touch some of the useless Judges are in this country, than the Mongrel Mob scumbag who broke into the home of a pregnant woman, sexually assaulted her as she lay in bed with her child, and was given home detention.

He thanked the Dudge (Gordon Matenga, bit of a clue there) and then walked from the dock, laughing and saying “Cracked it”.

The scumbag didn’t know the woman but knew who she was and had sent her a FB friend request and a number of texts the day before. After the attack she was forced to move away as this scumbag kept threatening her. He continues to deny the offending and was rated as being at a high risk of re-offending (colour me shocked).

    PDM. Young people are very free with numbers. The offender could have got it off a mutual acquaintance very easily. And given the offender is in a gang, it would have been given very quickly under threat, overt or otherwise, of violence
    
    It is a different world. I would always ask someone I know if they are happy for me to pass on their contact details before sharing a number… its not how it rolls in the under 30’s brought up in the connected world set….
    
    And the world around gangs is very different again – it takes some backbone to tell a gang member to take a walk – you will get a visit from a few of them if you are brave enough to tell one to sling their hook…

Winston Peters has condemned the shooting in Auckland yesterday, and has taken aim at soft sentences by the judiciary. He refers to “ludicrously soft sentences that put community safety a distant last to the offenders rights and excuses”.

Whilst it is easy to agree with Peters on this, he seems to have forgotten something. He was Deputy Prime Minister in the Labour-NZ First coalition government that set a target for reduction of the prison population by 30%. He was also Deputy PM in a government which introduced Hōkai Rangi in August 2019, a long-term strategy which aims to drastically cut the number of Māori in prison from 52 percent down to 16 – to match the overall Māori population.

This strategy could not have been adopted without NZF’s support. So it is troubling that Peters appears to have completely forgotten that he is complicit in “soft on crime” decisions taken by a government in which he was the second most senior member.

If Peters’ cognitive function is so poor that he cannot remember decisions to which he was bound by Cabinet collective responsibility, one would have to question his fitness to return to Parliament later in the year. Of course there’s another option though; that Peters is a political charlatan, who changes his views like the weather.

  1) Achieving significant intentional social change is difficult, often unsuccessful, and can come with unintended adverse outcomes. Kim Workman seems undeterred by his own previous, admitted failure.
  2) Labour’s record of implementation is poor.
  3) Internet information on HR, according to my brief search, is more vague and visionary (‘aspirational’ – that’s the word) than specific on its implementation.
  4) No intermediate dates and minimum outcomes are identified for evaluation.
  5) Given that crime is particularly concentrated among young males and that the median Māori age is about 10 years less than the NZ European median, 16% is almost certainly an unrealistically low figure of comparison.

I guess your ‘judgements’ will be under a great deal of scrutiny now, because the young man you released 4 months ago is now dead, and took 2 innocent people with him.

I trust that you will learn from this experience. I hope you realise that this man, and those who supported him, gamed the system to the point that his safety, and the safety of those around him was compromised. Was that ever a consideration for you?

The purpose of the justice system is to provide consequences for crimes, and opportunity to learn from mistakes.

Well, I feel that you, Judge Bonner, made a mistake, and now there are consequences. I know little of you as a person, but I hope that you feel some measure of responsibility for the deaths that occurred yesterday, including that of the gunman. The worst of those consequences have not been directly visited on you, but on innocent people. Please reflect on this.

I hope that you learn from this egregious mistake, and I hope the justice system learns from this as well.

Ukraine war update.

First of all the recent NATO conference in Lithuania. Several things from this conference. NATO says that its not the time for Ukraine to be considered for NATO membership (well obviously – NATO has no intention of admitting a new member that is currently in a state of war – that would mean a European wide war – at least – and probably world wide war).
Zelensky was at time left wandering around the conference venue in Vilnius looking like a spare cock at a wedding – with no one to talk to. A UK high level official of the UK Defence Ministry says that “Ukraine is asking for too much – we aren’t Amazon”

It has also emerged that the HIMARS rockets that the US is sending to Ukraine (all this AID is a loan – its not gifted) can only be used for targets that the US permits. The Himars have a range of 300Km and are multiple headed rockets that can be sent to different targets from the same rocket. Now its obvious that since they can only be targeted at permitted targets that US personel will be in the Ukraine supervising the operation of them. As well the US military will be loving the situation – they will be selecting a range of targets to see how effective the rockets are. What better opportunity for the military…..

On the ground the summer offensive has not gone well….. which isn’t good news as it shows that the aid the west has provided has not been well used. Analysis of the situation is that the Ukraine tried to use a mobility offensive (ie: use vehicles to move fast) but it has failed. The battle field is littered with destroyed Bradley armored vehicles and tanks. The fact is that the Russians have a VERY deep defensive set up and so far the Ukraine forces haven’t even got as far as the first (of 3) Russian defensive lines. So now the Ukrainians have to revert to a knock them down and slog it out artillery fight – and for that they think they need these cluster weapons. They will first have to knock out the Russian defenses (which are heavily based on artillery) before they can make any headway with a mobile offensive.
The Russians have advised that it will be cluster weapons for cluster weapons……

None of this is to assume the Russians are in any way better organized or supported. The recent apparent attempt by the Wagner group to mount a coup isnt great PR for Putin and its been obvious for years that corruption is rife in the Russian Military (and probably every where else.). But if nothing else the Russians are well proven at artillery use and are probably using the same defensive techniques that were proven seriously effective against a much better military setup than the Ukrainian military- ie: the German war machine of WWII.

Meanwhile the average Bill and Mary Ukranian citizen continues to see his/her country ruined. Its almost certain that Ukraine will not get the return of its lost territory by military means and unless there is a good reason for Putin (or his successor) to talk then at this time all that is going to happen is that the Ukraine will continue to be ruined and the signs from Vilnius conference are that patience with Zalinsky is starting to wear thin.

Ukrainian population is 1985 was about 51 million, today in 2023 its 36 million. Ill bet the majority of that 15 million drop were males of military service age. Wonder why………….
And there will be fewer Ukrainians when in a few years time the unexploded cluster bomblets are stood on by either western or eastern Ukrainians as they start to clean up the wreckage that the fighting has left behind.

    More importantly – all wars eventually end in some sort of negotiated peace or cease fire. This one is particularly hellish, possibly as bad as they get historically. So the sooner there is negotiated peace the better.
    
    If you are right in predicting that Putin will continue and “go again” then we are basically all pharked. Both sides (NATO/Russia) have nukes, so whoever starts loosing a conventional war and senses an existential threat to their homeland is highly likely to start pushing big red buttons at some point.
    
    So are you really advocating to continue to have a NATO-Russian war until Russia is so cornered that they only have one option left (nukes)?

He already keeps on the move all the time to avoid being assassinated. There are many generals who clearly have had a gutful of this incompetent Tzar.

  Ukrainians are rapidly wiping out Russian artillery, 20-30 guns or something like 1-2% of Russian artillery every day, with their superior range, accuracy, training and location systems. This is starting to have big impact, and within a few months will see Russia severely diminished in combat effectiveness. Russia do not have ability to replace even a fraction of their heavy weapon losses.
  
  US supplied cluster munitions will be very helpful for Ukraine in clearing or suppressing entrenched Russian infantry, Russia has been using cluster munitions and thermobaric bombs throughout conflict to great effect against infantry.
  
  The depth and density of minefields is a huge problem for Ukraine offense, 10’s of millions of mines make rapid advance impossible, and no way to clear them quickly – efforts to do so mean long periods exposed to enemy fire.
  
  Conflict is largely stalemated at the moment, but likely Kerch Bridge will be destroyed in next month or two and attrition of Russian heavy weaponry might eventually make it possible for Ukrainians to start advancing. I would say 50-50 they get through to sea of Azov this year and retake south and perhaps 10-20% they retake Crimea as well, but they won’t take Eastern Ukraine back.

        Russia’s arm reserves are a Potemkin village like their old May Day military displays where they would send fleets of planes circling over the Kremlin. They had huge outdoor depots full of heavy weapons accumulated during 40yr cold war – but that ended more than 30 years back. After the collapse of USSR they were completely neglected for long decades with no maintenance exposed to severe weather, and were picked over by scavengers for anything that could be easily removed and sold for scrap (aluminium, brass, copper components etc). Hatches were left open as a result wrecking interiors. Engines are all buggered. Barrel bores and firing mechanisms rusted, some can be restored to (poor) function with extensive refurbishment, but mostly they are nothing but rusted ornaments.
        
        The (documented) result is Russia desperately sending barely functional 60yr old T55s tanks to the front line to serve as makeshift artillery, to make up for 4100+ tanks they’ve lost (and 8000 APCS, 4500 Artillery systems etc), because the more modern stuff they supposedly have isn’t useable and the T55s are less complex so more feasible to recondition to get them moving.
        
        And that is not accounting for wear and tear – typically half of gear will fail outside of combat, and gun barrels are only good for a few 1000 shots, all remaining russian artillery is inaccurate dangerous junk at this point after firing something like 10-15million shells to date, and remaining shells are frequently now rusted and decades past use-by increasing danger to crews.
        
        Russia has in recent decades only been build a few 10’s of guns and 1-200 tanks, that’s just a few % of their current ‘burn’ rate. They never anticipated having to get into major arms production – they thought the war would be over in a week. They don’t have the industrial capacity, materials (sanction effects) or skilled workers to match usage rates in any useful amount of time.
        
        A week or two back it was reported that Ukraine now has more functional tanks (1500) than Russia (1400), and about 1100 guns to Russia’s remaining 1900, but Russia is losing 20 guns a day with no way to replace them. Russia does still have an airforce that Ukraine lacks, but their missile stocks are gone, with only a few 10’s being produced every month – mostly being shot down now along with their Iranian sourced drones.
        
        We are seeing increasing complaints of shortages from Russian side, their artillery firing rate has plummeted from 60000 a day in opening months, to 10-20000/day now (still several x 3-5000 of Ukraine), that’s 5-10x their million a year production capacity, and that will mean critical shortage as they exhaust stocks some time in next few months. Inaccurate, unreliable and short on supply is a terrible combination.
        
        The last advantage Russia still has is more warm bodies (though very low quality due to poor training and reluctant participation), but that can’t overcome a Materiel shortage

  The type of Himars rockets that Ukraine currently have are the GMLRS type with a max range of 80 kms. Himars can fire ATACMS rockets which have a range of 300 km but Ukraine hasn’t been given those. There are also the new PrSM missile with a 500km range but not in service yet.

The Christchurch shootings and other events saw journalists at the hospital interviewing staff and patients. I could be wrong but just feels like the reporting of this is being carefully managed.

  James Shaw is the poster boy for Undercurrent, using the assault on him of a few years ago (which was pretty universally condemned) as a justification for Ministers especially avoiding the public during the election campaign.
  
  Interestingly, it hasn’t stopped Christopher Luxon and David Seymour barnstorming up and down the country drawing capacity crowds wherever they speak. If Labour and the Greens want to fight this election online or in the media, I suggest they are going to run into significant resistance from the electorate.

    Karl du Fresne has a post up that has a comment on FACT organisation trust status – with some names of trustees and surprise, surprise two of those names appear to have links to the NZ Greens (if you google search the names)….

Am I alone in thinking that yesterday’s shooter probably got his weapon from someone who didn’t have a gun license? Someone who didn’t give up any guns after Christchurch? Perhaps one of those who proclaimed at the time that they “needed” theirs?

At the time, we confiscated guns from legal owners because someone gave out a gun license when they shouldn’t have.

I recently heard of motorcycle licenses being given out when they shouldn’t have. No doubt we’ll be confiscating motorcycles soon. Except, of course, from those who “need” theirs.

  The vast majority of the guns that were handed in during the buyback and amnesty were legal guns that either:
  * People had but decided to sell because they were not using them any more and could get a better price than the second hand dealer.
  * Newly illegal guns that people could no longer own.
  
  The median buyback price was over $2k. That’s a high price for a second hand gun. Probably more twice what you’d get selling to a second hand dealer. No wonder a few people leapt at the offer.
  
  Only 310 or so amnesty guns were handed in. I’ll place my standard bet of 50 cents and a servo pie that almost all of those were Old Fred’s duck hunting gun that was left in the safe after he died and nobody got around to sorting out.
  
  I’ll wager a bigger bet – $1 and a souvlaki – that only an extremely small number of amnesty guns were actually in the hands of criminals.
  
  Let’s face it. If you are a criminal, and thus have criminal contacts, then you can find a market for an illegal gun that would likely pay much better than the buyback.
  
  To further support my speculation, I see that most weapons handed in were in new, near new or used but good condition. Only 3% were in poor condition. Criminal guns are often in terrible condition so I doubt many of those got handed in.

      Interchangeable box mags are pretty uncommon on shotguns. Sure, they exist, but are uncommon.
      
      I’d say a tube mag is far more likely.
      
      While you can’t refill a tube as fast as changing a box mag, proficient shooters can refill a tube mag pretty quickly.

        These pump action shotguns illegal:
        
        – Those capable of being used with a detachable magazine;
        
        – Those that have a non-detachable tubular magazine capable of holding more than 5 rounds.
        
        Shotgun magazines, detachable or not, that hold more than five rounds, are banned.

  There is a statute of limitations in NZ, the Criminal Procedure Act. It seems that, depending on the offence, the limit is up to 5 years, but the Solicitor-General can give consent for filing after that.
  
  Edited to add that there are “Category 4” offences which don’t have limits – like murder, manslaughter, torture and terrorism.

      In 2022 a German Court sentenced a 101 year old former concentration camp guard to 5 years in prison for crimes that had taken place between 1942 and 1945.
      I don’t believe that such old people actually have to serve out the sentence but they can still be tried.

  No. It’s not just about reformation, it’s also about Punishment and a small sense of justice for the victims.
  
  The idea that you just need to hide your crime for a while and then you’re free isn’t something we should be telling prospective criminals. They should fear being caught and hopefully that will stop some from offending.
  
  But mostly, it’s about the victims. Not just his, but all victims of serious sexual assaults. They need to know that justice is on their side and that these animals will be held to account for their actions.
  
  There’s a very good series on Netflix called Unbelievable with a story that’s split into two timelines (separated by 4-5yrs) – based on a true story. At the end, the victim from the earlier period contacts the cops who finally got the guy and thanks them, saying that it meant everything to her that there was someone out there that was looking out for her without her knowing.
  
  Victims should always be the priority.

  Nats think that the Country vote is their ” by right” and Labour think the same for the Maori and P Is votes. Judging by the numbers that Luxon got to a meeting in the Labour heartland of Manurewa, Labour might get a surprise and in the Maori seats Labour could possibly lose at least half to TPM.

I shot out early this morning to grab the Herald, specifically to read the article on John Tamihere and the donations affair.

What a sorry tale.

The Waipareira Trust, of which he is the CEO, gave him just under $400,000 for election expenses and which was later relabelled as a loan only once the Charities Commission got involved and started asking questions.

The Commission’s key point of course is that advancing monies for political purposes is expressly forbidden under charities law. It is an unlawful activity.

This hasn’t stopped the Trust however. Nor another organisation that Tamihere is also the CEO of. The National Urban Maori Authority has also given him money for his political campaigns.

And now too we find that Waipareira has also funded Te Maori Party to the tune of $200,000 for their 2020 campaign!

Quite how funding the political interests of Tamihere and his family and friends in The Maori Party constitutes a charitable purpose remains unclear – and especially as charities law expressly forbids it.

Nonetheless, Tamihere has labelled this investigation into his affairs as a ‘racist attack on Maori’ and has had his legal representatives go on the warpath, it appears, with multiple complaints being made by Commission staff over their aggressive behaviour and communications, bullying and personal attacks etc.

What is now absolutely clear is that Tamihere and the Maori Party have benefitted from hundreds of thousands of dollars of money unlawfully gifted to them by charities controlled directly by Tamihere – in direct flouting and contravention of Charities Law and are seemingly be able to get away with it simply by having to ask Tamihere to pay it back – but not ensuring he does so and quickly.

It absolutely pains me to say this, but I think it’s fair to say that there is a public perception that Maori organisations are more likely to mismanage public money and in fact be on the fiddle. Whether this is actually true or not I cannot say. I certainly hope not. But what I can say is that this from Tamihere and others just smacks of corrupt practice, is a total abuse of charitable funds, is clearly unlawful and confirms peoples’ fears about money mismanagement in Maoridom.

If Tamihere and/or Waipareira or NUMA have broken the law then I expect prosecutions. This is Zimbabwe stuff. This whole affair is a great example to us of the character of those involved – and they want us to believe they have our best interests at heart. They want to be part of the next government – and they want more public money being shovelled their way and to other Maori organisations.

Will we be allowed to just come out and say it? These people are crooks. But if you call them out on it then that makes you a racist!

  Using the murder of innocent people as a political prop is as transparent as it is abhorrent. The nation is not in mourning. The vast majority of people are really sad that our justice system is such a farce it enables and encourages rampant crime, including murder.

Allison Pearson’s column in today’s Telegraph is a corker, laying into the constant propaganda and psychological manipulation being thrown at us from official sources, first over Covid and now over weather and climate, to frighten us into compliance with extreme apocalyptic agendas. Here’s an excerpt.

You may have noticed that climate catastrophism has gone nuclear over the past week, as if on cue (we’ll come back to that), but the good old British weather refuses to cooperate. Disappointingly for the We’re All Gonna Fry brigade, it’s cool, rainy and sullen here with fitful gusts of wind; almost autumnal at times. As a July baby, I can tell you this is not unusual for July. (Prince George will have to get used to having his parties in the cloudy drizzle on our mutual birthday.)

Still, reporters scour the rest of Europe for better (i.e., bad) news. Tourists at the Trevi Fountain in Rome are invited to agree that the weather is “unbearable”. If it’s unbearable, why aren’t they back in their hotel rooms with a wet towel on their heads instead of happily licking their pistachio gelato and soaking up the rays? Why are reports of wildfires in La Palma being linked to soaring temperatures, when the weather on the island is in fact unusually mild, and set to be in the mid-20s all week?

“Ironically, on the same day the IPCA announced their review, Posie Parker (Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull) announced that she’ll be returning to New Zealand in September. Already we are seeing our would-be-censors once again organise to challenge her entry, and the right for Kiwis to hear from her.

Rest assured that our team is already preparing to oppose the challenge that will try and block her from entering the country.”

I can see it going both ways. Either the government will be gun shy about rocking the boat before the election by denying her a visa or they will see it as a last chance to stab free speech in the back because electorally-speaking, they’re on a hiding to nothing.

    We have gas heating & hot water….electric for everything else.

This is an edited extract from the chapter ‘Be the first to speak up’ from the new book Free Your Mind: The new world of manipulation and how to resist it by Laura Dodsworth and Patrick Fagan, out July 20th.

‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ is a tale that raises questions about self-deception, conformity and obedience to authority. Like all good fairy tales, it conveys a charter for human behaviour – learning to speak first, like the boy, is good practice and will help you develop psychological resilience to mindless conformity.

And yet for most of us it is hard to speak up first. We often like the safety of the crowd.

Human beings are very social animals, having evolved in tribes. It makes evolutionary sense to follow the crowd: we don’t have the time or the energy to think through every decision in detail, and if everyone else is doing something, it’s probably correct. If everyone is screaming and running away, you probably ought to as well.

We look to others whom we perceive as better informed, and we like to stay on the right side of people. Conformity has its upsides. Feeling identified with the group can feel safer and even be literally safer in a physical sense – we don’t eat the berries from the bush that everyone else avoids. We rely on social cooperation. You could even say that our most basic foundational need is to belong.

But there are dangers.

Great advice from Laura Dodsworth, author of ‘State of Fear’, an excellent book talking about the use of psychological ‘nudging’ methods to drive compliance with inane covid policies like masking.

You can choose to be an outlier and practise it. Mindfully observe any uncomfortable emotions in relation to speaking up or deviating from the group. Notice the discomfort and fear. Pause and collect, or push through. Although you might initially face social disapproval, the benefit is authenticity and growth, being true to yourself and having principles. As Joost Meerloo said in The Rape of the Mind: “Whether or not we are aware of it, there is nothing of which we are more ashamed than of not being ourselves, and there is nothing that gives us greater pride and happiness than to think, to feel, and to say what is ours.”

Never be afraid to speak the truth.

  Thanks for the post and the link, Clan – very interesting. When i was on some management course or other, a lifetime ago, I learned of a phenomenon which has a name that I can’t recall.
  
  It is quite possible, and I’ve seen it happen, where a group can arrive at what they believe is the right decision, without a single member of that group individually thinking it’s the right decision. People will not only go along with group-think, but will even make a judgement about what that group-think is likely to conclude.

Well I saw Christopher Nolan’s latest movie, Oppenheimer, last night and although my fears of it being a dud were not met (yay), I’m sorry to say that it’s not as good as it could have been, mainly because Nolan’s noted fascination with time is becoming an obsession.

I reviewed it and you can make up your own minds as to whether it’s worth the price of the ticket.

A student attacked two teachers at Auckland’s Epsom Girls Grammar School yesterday, the school has revealed in an email to parents.

The letter, sent by principal Lorraine Pound this morning, said a student “physically struck” two staff members at the school yesterday.

  I remember being told that at one point in time, police, teachers, nurses and politicians used to have relative pay parity. That is long gone, politician on almost treble the starting salary of the others. Nothing to do with the ‘Independent’ Remuneration Authority making the decisions on the behalf of the ~~politicians~~ parasites. All completely above board.
  
  I wish I had an ‘Independent’ Remuneration Authority’ paid by me, via taxpayer money to make totally honest and open decisions about how much my pay should go up every year. No conflict of interest whatsoever…….//

Wow. An extremely important post and comments exposes a cabal of neo-Marxists operating in clandestine fashion in New Zealand:

It appears that Susie Ferguson, on Red Radio, is using taxpayer funds to platform a cabal of neo-Marxist extremists.

Of course, the self-confessed neo-Marxist Kate Hannah is mentioned. However, the extreme left-wing conspiracy is much bigger than just the so-called “Disinformation Project”.

Hi Andrea

First I thank you for your timely response. However, I am unhappy with the content of your response. I have a few questions I would hope you or someone senior to respond to.

Are you the person who implemented the policy of putting trans rights ahead of woman’s rights, children’s rights and parents’ rights? If not, I hope that person will properly answer this email.

The main issue was 2 Degrees siding with a violent activist minority instead of the women who were violently assaulted.

I mentioned Bud Light in the US. When they support a trans who to the best of my knowledge was not violent there was an effective boycott. Is 2 Degrees aware of this?
I support Family First who also is concerned about activists trans.

This started with Spark and then spread to One New Zealand. Then 2 Degrees joined in. To make this simpler I will use the word you instead of 2 Degrees

This is what I wrote about. The comment about poor waiting time was secondary. If you had sorted out the waiting times I would have still made my complaint.

It appears that you are working together with other ISPs on this political issue. If you will not change its position to protect women’s right to free speech I will support a boycott of 2 Degrees and other ISPs.

When I saw the video on the violence of the activists and the inaction on the part of the Police to protect the peaceful protest I was appalled. I made an official complaint to the IPCA. I expected some others to do the same but was surprised that I was one of 162 who made an official complaint.

Are you aware of the facial injury to a woman in her70s inflected by a man in his 20s

Are you aware of one of the main protagonists, Shavneel Lal has been sending nude pictures to Kellie Jay Keen?

Do you support the right of women to safe spaces such as toilets and changing rooms?

Do you support the right of women not to have to compete against biological men in sports?

Are you aware that Kellie Jay is coming to New Zealand for the hearing of Shavneel Lal for his assault on her on 20 September?

Do you think our PM should instruct the Commissioner of Police that there should not be a repeat of Albert Park and that Kellie Jay and all people who want to hear her be protected?

If the Rainbow Tick lot were peaceful I would not be sending this email. They are not and I support law and order and free speech so I hope 2 Degrees will change its position on this matter quickly.

I can understand the police have to contact the next of kin before going public with those murdered yesterday. Unless I have missed it the only info so far is that the victims were in their forty’s. Does this delay possibly mean that their next of kin live overseas ?

Some 480 housing applications including Families with children living in cars compared to 102 in October 2017.
Some 480 applicant’s for emergency housing, possibly including Families with children, have been living in cars, this a sharp increase in the figures since Labour first came to power promising to fix homelessness in October 2017.
Associate Social Development Minister Priyanca Radhakrishnan (MSD) data showed there were 480 applications for emergency or traditional housing who listed a “car ” as their current accommodation compared to 102 in October 2017.
