  Some random questions and answers.
  
  1. Can NZF get to 5%? Hopefully they will get to 4.9% and most of their support will be ex Labour voters.
  2. Do the Nats and ACT really want NZF as a partner? On past performance hell no.
  3. Can Luxon win the Leaders Debates? Hopefully as at least some of the Undecided will decide on who they think won.
  4. Will it be a close run thing? IMHO only a cigarette paper will separate the Left and Right.

    I think there is a huge swing away from Labour and the left in rural New Zealand.
    
    Will it continue to votes on the 14 October well we can only wait and hope. I think it will – National high 30’s, ACT 15 Labour just below 30, Greens 6, Maori 3 but maybe causing an overhang and NZF nudging 5 and possibly sneaking in. A lot of wasted votes to the plethora of small parties..

      Here we go, we do. It have a hard nosed right anymore, but of course there is right, because the left are so far left what else could there be. Hard left support has disappeared from the day the stupid MMP system was introduced, ACT are not even hard right, just possibly parties have worked out hard right is not a winner under mmp

We don’t have a Conservative party – the Nats are a neoliberal party with a sprinkling of conservatives who have almost no influence on policy, and ACT are classical liberals/right libertarians.     I wish people on the right would be a bit less precious.
    
    Democratic politics is a game of making the best available choice at the time. Throwing your vote away or refusing to vote because your preferred party isn’t perfect is a recipe for ending up with your least preferred party. It is the political equivalent of throwing your food on the floor or holding your breath because you didn’t get what you wanted. Some people just need to grow up!
    
    In 2017 a lot of people were sold the lie that “National is Labour Lite” and persuaded to vote for Winston to “Keep National Honest”. Some of you were pushing that ridiculous line back then. And some of you bought it. Remember? After six years of New Zealand’s WORST GOVERNMENT EVER, how did that all work out for you then?
    
    Now I see exactly the same rhetoric again. Don’t be idiots people, grow up. If you want to “teach National a lesson” vote for ACT or do something interesting with your electorate vote. But unless you want three more years of wrecking ball Hipkins for Goodness sake make sure that your party vote goes safely to either National or ACT so that we get a change of government.
    
    And don’t vote for bloody Winston or it’ll be 2017 all over again.

  I don’t believe for a moment that he will take any notice of Casey Costello, unless it meets his agenda.
  Ms Costello will have to fit in with what Peters wants, not the other way round – although I do agree that she might prove to be a very useful tool for him to use.

    Gravel, how do you know this? Genuine question, I find it doubtful Peters has full say on what coalition partners are determined, he would be highly influential but surely a caucas vote would be the final determination?

      Why won’t it?
      Why would having Casey Costello (or anyone else) as a Winston 1st MP (as implied) make any difference at all as to who Peters may decide to install as the government – on a personal whim – on the day?

    Mr Peters did not give hundreds of thousands of dollars to NZ First. He made a loan to the Party of that substantial sum.
    Why the difference?
    If the party does do as he says he calls the loan for immediate repayment.
    It follows from the Public Interest Journalism Fund.
    Money was not given to various arms of the main stream media. It was loaned to them, in the form of a suspensory loan. If the borrowers continue to lick the haemorrhoids on the governing party the loan, and interest thereon, is written off. If the borrowers do not attend to that distasteful task the loan, and interest thereon, is repayable in full.

    Voters won’t forget what Labour did with their covid response and that National and ACT supported it and will not man up and admit they were wrong, that people who were harmed need help and that a truly independent commission of inquiry has a look at all aspects of the response. If Wiston promises that he’ll get into parliament easily.
    
    Before anybody says that I’m a labour/NZ1st/ACT supporter out to destroy National and “hand the election” to Labour, I’m not. I’m a centre-right voter who believes in our God-given freedoms and I see neither ACT or National fighting for them.

      To what extent is Hobson’s Pledge an anti-Māori group made up of mainly nutters, to what extent a group defending a democracy built on individual and equal citizenship rights regardless of ancestry?
      
      If I take the writings (at least, the limited selection I’ve read) of its supporters at face value, it looks mostly the latter with occasional elements of the former.

      Rodney – well said. If any of the other big parties had the fortitude to do the right thing then I imagine Casey would have went there as she would have a better chance of getting a seat.
      
      Sadly, currently none of our big parties will even acknowledge the harms that were done to many thousands of NZ citizens and National’s response to the rampant racism tearing the country apart is weak as water. Act are addressing the racial issue quite well, but Seymour is in total denial regarding the harms of covid responses and the experimental vaccines.
      
      The issues are very clear to many people, pretending they aren’t real or wishing them away isn’t going to happen anytime soon. The longer it takes to address these issue the harder the resolution will be.

        Flossie – the two biggest and most serious events in NZ over the last 3 years have been the covid response and the racist policies being implemented.
        Everything else pales into insignificance.
        
        I’ll vote for whoever acknowledges this.
        
        So far, National and Act have decided to pretend covid, and the associated abuses of human rights and destruction of lives didn’t happen.
        If either party could grow a spine, acknowledge the abuse and say they will make sure nothing like it happens again, they’ll get my vote.
        
        Act seem to be addressing the racial insanity. National not so much.
        
        If these two issues aren’t addressed, everything else is tinkering around the edges.
        If nobody addresses these two issues then I will abstain from voting as it would mean no politician or political party represents me.

    Nigel Kearney: Casey Costello has the right to stand for whatever political party she wishes. As a member of Hobson’s Pledge- and I dont think I’m any more a ‘nutter’ than anyone else who is an enthusiast for democracy – I have never witnessed any politicizing in favour of NZF, in fact I’d have thought Casey was more aligned to ACT. Her decision took me quite by surprise. Hobson’s Pledge has been, and will continue to be, a voice for reason in NZ.

    Nigel Kearney – way to go! How to attract voters to National/Act, abuse them and call them nutters. That nasty smear and vitriol worked so well during covid didn’t it?
    
    Don’t bother addressing the very valid concerns of those potential voters concerned about extremist racial and medical policies in NZ and the associated abuses of human rights.
    
    No, just get pissy and abuse anyone who dares not toe your party line. Sounds very like Ardern to me.
    
    I just read the letter from Casey Costello explaining the reason why she is leaving and running as a NZF candidate.
    
    Unlike the mealy mouthed, apologist dribble from National re racial policy in NZ and the complete refusal to even admit their were serious breaches of human rights and abuse of citizens during covid, she speaks clearly and actually addresses the very dangerous racist direction NZ is heading in.
    I’ve said before, National and Act are leaving glaring policy gaps that Peters will exploit. Many people are exasperated at the blatant and cowardly lack of acknowledgment of the harms done during covid, fully endorsed by National and Act.
    Their response to the dangerous racist policies being forced down our throats is at best, weak.
    
    NZF and Peters have raised the issue of concerns re vaccine injuries. The first to even acknowledge that there is a problem. If they go a little further and speak to the many thousands of disaffected who were harmed by malignant covid policies, they will garner plenty more support and will cruise over the 5% needed.
    
    So, if and when that happens, complain all you want about the ‘injustice’ of it all and how ‘unfair’ it all is. You’ll get the same response from those voters as you gave to them when they complained about real injustice and unfairness forced on them by a tyrannical government. Particularly health and racial issues.
    
    Get over it, move on.

  I respect Casey very much and wish her well but NZ First will never get my vote while W Peters is there.
  
  It could be that this is succession planning as Casey would be a far better leader than Winston but I don’t think that Winston’s ego would allow him to consider anyone other than himself to be in control.

We do need a party like NZ1 in the middle for the soft left and right voters to go to when dissatisfied with their party of choice. If someone like NZ1 doesn’t exist it gives air to the greens .

  Well, Cameron Slater and others said that Winston would not go with Labour in 2017 and he went with Labour who was the higher bidder. It would be the same this time round, Labour is far more likely than National to bid recklessly meaning that Winston is far more likely to go with Labour than National (assuming he holds the balance of power). So a vote for Winston is effectively a vote for Labour. Also with respect to NZF, Winston makes sure he continues to hold the Ace of Spades and all the trumps. If you do not like National, then vote ACT, voting for anyone else is a vote for Labour.

  I think that getting Casey Costello and Dr Michelle Warren on board is a game changer for NZ First and they will get over the 5% threshold as a result. Whether National and Act can gain enough to not require NZ First in a coalition is another interesting aspect of the upcoming election. The main aim of the game however is to get rid of the numpties who are pretending to govern at present.

  When Deputy PM, Winston Peters sat around the Cabinet table when decisions were made to reduce the prison population by 30%. He was bound by Cabinet collective responsibility them, and he cannot publicly walk away from policies that could not have been adopted without NZ First’s support.

I was shocked to read she’s putting her name in the NZF hat. I thought she’d be more ACT candidate material. Im really disappointed. Deception and distraction are universal methods for the maintenance of a status quo, and are completely independent of the nature of that status quo. Distraction and deception are needed when a system is failing, be it Roman imperialism, Soviet communism, or liberal democratic capitalism. While it is common practice among KB commenters, we needn’t invoke the phantom of “socialism” to explain what is right in front of our faces, which is end-stage capitalism. “Socialism is the real threat” is itself a distraction from reality.

        Being pedantic we live in a hybrid capitalist\socialist society. Pure capitalism would not have Government supplied services such as roads, education, health system, dole etc. We obviously have a significant element of capitalism courtesy of rule of law, differential pay etc. The question is always about which elements of socialism are sensible, realistic and fair.
        
        It’s clear NZ has been heading leftwards at a rate of knots for decades now to its overall detriment.

      All team sports are inherently socialistic. No individuality, you see. Too much “greater good” stuff, and we all know that there is no such thing as “society.” You even get tribalism in the form of team loyalty (tribe colours and regalia, sometimes derogatory chants directed at opposing tribes etc.) There’s a great irony in collectivism being mass-marketed to otherwise largely unconnected individuals with little authentic sense of a collective good. Its appeal almost gives the lie to the constructed myth of the individual so necessary as a basis of liberal democracies. Don’t FIFA world cups undermine the idea of an undifferentiated human equality?

  I’d like to see a new National government adopt a more rational immigration policy. We do need some immigrants. However since 2000 we have had mass immigration. Our country went from 3.8 million people to 5 million people in 20 years. That has had a negative impact on housing and we still haven’t caught up with housing. That has had a negative impact on infrastructure. And anyone who goes to places like Auckland notes that congestion has got worse and worse.
  
  Housing has got worse. We have people living in cars even here in Masterton. We have people that have lived in motels for the last two or three years. I would like to see National open up the market for rental accommodation. I would like to see them remove most of the regulations so that landlords can rent out affordable basic homes to basic tenants. There needs to be very basic accommodation for people at the end of the line.
  
  So an end to mass immigration, immigration based on need and cutting out most of the burdensome regulations on landlords and allow the housing market to be free. This will enable the market to house even basic tenants that need cheap very basic accommodation.

    National want more immigration because they are the Big Business party and infinite growth of the economy is necessary for Big Business (even though it’s necessarily impossible), while Labour like mass immigration because they hate White people and want to see them eclipsed.
    
    Radically changing the social fabric and the demographics is one of the most fundamental things a government can do, and both stripes are committed to doing it. This is one reason why I’m not hanging my hopes on a National government making any difference to anything, because I have no reason to think they will. The outcome for the missing Real Estate lady in Christchurch sadly isn’t looking good. The stand up the Det. Inspector Nicola Reeves did a few days ago was impressive, she was compassionate, calm, spoke well, obviously had more evidence but couldn’t say. Can’t remember the case but there was one cop not so long ago who could barely string a sentence together.

  That said Special K was at his classic worst. He was attempting to blame the previous National government for the rise in violent crime. This we were told because of the number of violent criminals in jail before 2017, who are now free. Anyone in the Ilam electorate wondering whether National might lose it again?

We are just 83 days from the election, and the Labour MP who beat the favourite, Gerry Brownlee, last time has re-emerged from Nowhere Land. Scarcely heard from since the 2020 election, her picture is now everywhere around the electorate – on trailers, in suburban papers.

Same with Raf Manji, the Opportunities Party candidate. Manji is a former City Councillor and is well known to electorate voters. A vote for Maji likely helps the Labour incumbent.

Have electorate voters heard from National’s candidate, Hamish Campbell, since a circular spelling out his background? That was a few weeks ago.

Campbell, a medical researcher, ought to be an ideal candidate, given the collapse of the health system under Labour.

Perhaps National’s organisers are planning a late campaign, with a visit from Shane Reti to bolster Campbell in a blitz on Labour’s health performance.

Perhaps National organisers plan to set the campaign alight by taking south an MP like Simeon Brown to drop a match on fuming anti-Woke frustration – or Melissa Lee to hammer Labour’s media bribery and its resultant bias.

In the 2020 election, Campbell stood in Wigram against Megan Woods. The result: Woods 24,186 votes, Campbell 9,416. Party vote: National [Labour] 54.6 per cent, National 21.3 per cent.

In 2020 in the Ilam electorate, Labour’s 2023 candidate, Sarah Pallett, won the electorate seat with 19,825 votes.

Gerry Brownlee, whose campaign was more subdued than in previous elections, won 16,362 votes.

Labour took 44.7 per cent of the Ilam party votes, and National 29.5 per cent.

It shouldn’t be too hard for Winston Peters to boost the party votes he takes in Ilam. In 2020, NZ First took just 769 of the electorate’s 43,645 party votes.

  Hamish Campbell is doing the hard yards with old-school campaigning. He is one of the top National candidates in terms of doors knocked on and people engaged. Signs and newspaper advertisements don’t win votes, but conversations with voters on their doorsteps do; just ask David Seymour.
  
  There’s no substitute for personal engagement, and Campbell is doing an outstanding job of that. I predict he will win comfortably, with Raf in second place, and the dreadful Sarah Pallet, the “accidental MP” a distant third.

    What long term research shows that widespread sexual diversity is better for wellbeing? There’s no longitudinal data, only political slogans and anecdotes. This is literally ‘f- around, find out’.
    
    However a heterosexual family has been the building block of society for 1000s of years. There’s lots of data to indicate that kids with intact father-mother families do so much better in wellbeing and economic prosperity – we’ve certainly documented the social damage of fatherlessness on families and kids.
    
    The burden of proof is on the Ministry of Education to show that questioning heterosexuality is better for children and society in general.

      Homosexuality is not only biologically wrong, it’s morally wrong. But it is the act that is the problem, less so the people who engage in it. People may have the urge to do all sorts of things, but that doesn’t mean they should or that we should signal that it is OK. Lack of moral clarity has lead to complete capitulation across a wide spectrum.
      
      There is such a thing as a slippery slope, which is why liberalising attitudes to homosexuality has led to gay teachers propagandising children. You cannot accept the first and then be shocked when the logical consequences inevitably arise. The place to draw a line is at the beginning, not halfway down the track when its too late.
      
      The left have been only too happy to impose their morality whether we like it or not for decades, whereas the right seem to think that imposing morality is itself immoral.

        Equally, I consider your (apparent) beliefs to be “fucked up beliefs.” So there’s that. Which is the more “fucked up belief”: that sex is between men and women, or that it also includes two men penetrating each others’ anuses? I’ll let the jury decide that one.
        
        The kinds of diseases that are coincident with the act of sodomy alone are are strong indication that it is an unnatural act. It isn’t sex because it isn’t potentially procreative, it is a poor substitute for the actual thing, which is a man and a woman having sex. If everyone was gay, then we’d die out in a generation, so it’s hard to argue that it isn’t a maladaptive behaviour.
        
        I believe in a teleological view of the world – in other words, a cup is for attaining the end of containing water, and an anus is for the end of excreting human waste. It isn’t a sex organ, anymore than a knot in a tree is, even though it is possible to place a penis in both.
        
        In a sane world, which used to be the case, we’d accept that some people will unfortunately have urges that are in conflict with the dictates of nature, and therefore that they’d act to satisfy those urges. But that doesn’t entail that social acceptance of that behaviour should follow.
        
        As I argued, if we signal acceptance of homosexuality as such, it is a short progression and inevitable progression to the next thing we are expected to accept, for instance drag queens or gay teachers grooming kids for which the motivation is obvious. This is empirically verifiable too, it isn’t speculation.

        I accept that there will always be people engaging in deviant sexual behaviour, because they always have done. Just because people act in a certain way, doesn’t mean we should endorse it. Some people drink themselves to a stupor every night, but is that something we should endorse? I wouldn’t have thought so.
        
        What I would do is nothing – simply accept that gays exist, but leave it at that. Ignore them and certainly don’t validate them or their behaviour. It should be signalled and inculcated that it is wrong, because it is. No Pride months, no rainbow ticks, none of that. Be gay, but don’t expect me to think that it’s in any way normal.
        
        They should be ashamed of themselves, and I think that they are if they are honest. But it takes effort to become moral, and they can do it too. As I said, the behaviour is the issue, not the person as such. Like so much errant behaviour, I think it is mostly a symptom of dysfunction and early life trauma.

        Sure, homosexuality is “biologically wrong”, but so are many of the things we do.
        Any use of contraception is “biologically wrong” because it interferes with the biological purposes, so is avoiding sexual contact with a 13 year old girl (she’s producing eggs, so the “biologically right” thing to do is impregnate her).
        Our bodies are designed for walking. Using a car is biologically wrong. So is using artificial lighting and staying up late at night.
        
        The only way out of this mess is libertarianism – the non aggression principle. Anyone can to whatever they want so long as they are not harming others.
        
        Two or more consenting guys want to do whatever they want and call it fun? Go for it. Just don’t force me to join in.

        Everything we do affects others, because we live in a society with other people, not in an abstract world of individuals that libertarians would have us believe.
        
        There is a logical progression and direct link from the idea of free individuals with no constraints, no obligations to others, and people doing what they want, to the quasi-dystopia we inhabit. Like ballast on a ship, people need constraints to stay on course, rather than sailing around in circles “free” of ballast.
        
        If we remove all norms and social pressures to conform to some common standard, even if some people don’t like it, then you end up with the society that people complain about on KB every day. The difference is that I appreciate the connections, whereas many others don’t. Empirical reality informs my worldview, not the fantasy of people “being their authentic self” no matter what the consequences are.

        Excellent comment. The so-called “sexual revolution” has enslaved people, not liberated them. An amoral society that is obsessed with orgasms is very easy to control. Add drugs, alcohol and other distractions, and you’ve enslaved everyone to their senses.
        
        The number one cause of divorce is premarital promiscuity. People used to get married at 18 and have sex with their husband/wife. Now they spend 10 years rooting around first, destroying their soul and self-esteem, then they bail as soon as their marriage becomes less than perfect.
        
        The idea of questioning sexual liberation tends to provoke violent reactions from those who don’t know any better, because they are addicted to the idea of hedonism, licentiousness, and other vice, which was the intention of doing away with “oppressive” moral standards. Radio NZ – Red Radio, State Radio – is making a last pre-election stand to justify Ardern’s anti-free speech, the Media Disinformation campaign.

This shows the danger of a State radio. It should be for overseas news on behalf of the NZ Government and for emergency warnings and information within NZ.

The Kelvin Davis interview on Q&A was a train wreck. To be fair to Tame whom I detest was more aggressive. How people like Davis can become Ministers shows how bereft we are of competent people in parliament. Shane Reti came across as very passionate and knowledgeable Tame attempted a low punch about Reti not getting patients permission to be in the ambulance. Sure he has not the charisma to be the leader. Frankly I would rather have competency over charisma any day.

I like the way Peters nails current issues affecting New Zealanders, he is a true dyed in the wool populist. He knows what itches to scratch. Do I trust him to do anything about them, not one little bit. He knowingly put a very inexperienced radical left government into power in 2017, he knew they had done no policy work for 9 years, he knew that voters wanted a National led government, but Labour offered him the baubles he wanted.

While he is not directly responsible for the crisis we now have, he enabled the Labour, Greens and TPM government, it’s simply inconceivable that he didn’t know about their more radical co-governance policies. As long as my arse points downwards I won’t be voting for that old charlatan.

Commenting on the news that the Department of Conservation (DoC) has agreed to pay staff bonuses of up to $3,500 a year for Māori language skills, Taxpayers’ Union Campaigns Manager, Callum Purves, said:

“If a role at the Department of Conservation – or any other department for that matter – requires proficiency in te reo Māori, then of course fluent speakers should be hired. However, DoC freely admit that they have no such roles.

“Where it is not directly relevant to their job, public servants who want to learn te reo should, of course, be encouraged to do so, but in their own time. Like many, I attend te reo classes outside of working hours and for no bonus payment, why should it be any different for DoC staff?

“At a time when DoC is scrambling around trying to find ways to dig itself out of a multi-million dollar black hole, it is simply unjustifiable to be spending more of taxpayers’ hard-earned money on skills that are not practical requirements of the job.

“Refusing to answer basic questions on how much this policy will cost in the hopes of stalling through the weeks-long OIA process undermines transparent government. This ‘too-good-for-scrutiny’ attitude just goes to show how little respect many public servants have for the people that pay their salaries.”

Why be surprised. Asking for many many potential Party Vote electors.

70 convictions and only 36 years old

A 36-year-old man who had already notched up 32 jail sentences, was handed another when he appeared in the Timaru District Court on Thursday.

Scott James Brokenshire added three more burglary convictions – all committed in Methven on February 20-21, 2023 – to the 10 he had already accumulated when he appeared before Judge Dominic Dravitzki on those charges, plus driving while disqualified and possession of an offensive weapon (knuckledusters on September 27, 2022).

Former Shortland Street star Lee Donoghue is now a New Zealand First candidate and has encouraged party members to oppose all “gender, sexuality and social ideology” from the school curriculum.

Donoghue, who played Hunter McKay on the popular soap from 2006 to 2012, has returned from Hollywood and spoke at NZ First’s annual conference in Auckland today, introducing a policy proposal that asserted children – specifically in primary school – were being “sociologically indoctrinated” regarding sexual education.

Speaking to the Herald, Donoghue said he believed there was a “woke virus” in New Zealand’s education system that led to the “ever-increasing sexualisation of children”.

Just been to a David Seymour event at Christchurch town hall. Venue full.

Under questioning he conceded that the vaccine mandates and coercion were wrong. He said that people should have been given a choice betwen vaccination and regular testing.

It was not a total walk back but he said plainly “the coercion was wrong”.

      I won’t forget or forgive. After researching the available facts back in early 2020 I decided to not get vaccinated. At age 73 for a long time I was not allowed to eat out, go to my favorite club or enjoy my favorite sport – scubadiving.
      
      I doubt that there will ever be a court case against those who caused so many people to suffer needlessly but if one does eventuate I hope the jury throws the book at those responsible. I would volunteer for jury duty if old farts are allowed to do so.

      I lost my job, but I was lucky. I was receiving superannuation, I had a decent amount of savings, and I didn’t have a mortgage. This enabled me to resist the bullying.
      
      But it would have been different if I was in my mid-30s, with three kids and a large mortgage.

Can Someone please clarify NZ Firsts policies as reported by stuff: “NZ First would campaign on five key issues, he said. This would see the party take a stand against “racist spermatism”,” Winston did also say “This is not our first rodeo,” although I am not sure if the 2 comments are connected. I do however look forward to seeing the policies around “racist spermatism” and which ministry will be responsible.

Just watching a replay of Kelvin “Gunna” Davis speaking with Jack Tame. Threw Judges under the bus, blamed National, but now after 6 years he is “gunna” do this and “gunna” do that. You have had 6 years Gunna and you have done nothing. No management, no ongoing oversight, no follow up with your department. You haven’t got a clue what it takes to be a Minister and Leader, you are a waste of space Gunna.

Following on from the Jack Tame interview with Kelvin Davis, here is a link to the MoJ data tables for criminal offending:

Contrary to Tames assertion that violent crime had increased, it in fact seems to have dropped over the last couple of years. The offending is broken down by age and ethnicity.
Of interest in the violent offending including domestic violence, (for which NZ has the worst record in the OECD) is that the offenders are 88% male. And statistically probably Cis males. So Marama Davidson has 2/3rds of it right.

Poor student….

As a school student myself, I average 35 hours a week in class, plus a minimum 10 hours of travel.

When the 11 hours of travel-exclusive sport and at least seven hours of work are accounted for, I’m left wondering how I manage the hours of homework and sleep. Fun? Relaxation? Unrelated to school? Don’t be silly.

How much positive change might we see in New Zealand’s teens if the four-day school week was introduced?
