    National’s transport policy announcement is a Bobby Dazzler.
    • Whangārei to Port Marsden – $1.3b and to start in the next one to three years.
    • Warkworth to Wellsford – $2.2b and to start in the next four to 10 years.
    • Cambridge to Piarere – $720 million and tostart in the next one to three years.
    • Tauriko West State Highway 29 – $1.9b and to start in the next four to 10 years.
    
    Infrastructure and education are the keys to our future prosperity and National will uniquely actually deliver their policies.
    
    It makes you wonder why, when reporting National’s policies, the herald gives such prominence to the architects of NZ’s 6 years of abject transport and education failure.
    
    It also makes you wonder why voters are so transfixed on demanding our Prime Ministers and Mayors are media darlings.

        Yes have to agree KT, good on them for starting these roading projects again, but motorways north and south of Christchurch also need to be four laned. Current southern motor was planned to be four lanes to Ashburton as part of Roads of National Significance but Labour put the kibosh on that and it goes down to two lanes at Rolleston. Quite a few fatals on the Rolleston to Ashburton piece as a result.

        kowtow – when mrspdm and I did virtually a lap of the SI, including to Collingwood, in April/May 2021 we thought almost all of the roads we travelled on were far better maintained and superior to all in Hawkes Bay at that time. BTW HB roads are fare worse now but, hard to believe SI roads have deteriorated to the same extent in two and a bit years.
        
        We did go `off the beaten track’ from time to time and found it hard to understand why there seemed to be so many serious accidents throughout the South Isaland.

        The roads aren’t bad up here. Went up to ashburton two weeks ago good roads. Road into town is set to get a new seal in summer. More pot holes on the council roads than the govt ones.

        Luxon just needs to get all his info on an ipad in excel then he can search projects and dollar values and have a page for each ministry with summaries. Or have a staff member feeding him answers at interviews. He also just needs to say new projects will be paid for by cancelling light rail and LGWM.

      The Government is enacting Anti-Slavery legislation. It will apply to businesses with revenue over $20M. I wonder how they and the Government are going to account for the minerals that go into the batteries of lecky vehicles are mined not just be Slave but Child Slaves. No doubt there will be an exemption. Afterall whats a few Child Slaves when your saving the planet.

    Yes, a little untidy by Luxon, but the policy itself is excellent. The guts of the four lanes between Whangarei and Tauranga is already built, so lets get on and build from either end.
    
    Killing Let’s Get Wellington Moving in favour of four lanes from Levin to the airport is fantastic, as is the decision to finally kill off light rail in Auckland. All things considered it is an outstanding plan, and if it rarks up the Greens and Labour, even better!

    Agreed – really poor. In theory a good policy but his interview made it sound like National were competing with Labour’s GST policy for ‘sounds good but details schmetails’ award.
    
    This is a shame because unless the numbers stack up it will be an absolutely gimme for Labour, the Greens and for National’s main opponent in the upcoming election, the media!
    
    Luxon needs to get better at answering when under pressure. Keep on hearing how well he’s being received up and down the country – which is great. But in the white hot intensity of an election campaign, and particularly during the debates, “erm” and “umm” are not going to cut it.

      PJ; if you listen carefully to the questions, you will realise that most of the time the interviewer has no idea what the subject is about; and is just parroting the supplied questions.
      Luxon has more factual information in his head than the combined knowledge of most of the interviewers.

      Can’t agree. I’m not a Luxon fan but thought he acquitted himself very well. This is a good set of policies and – with around 30 projects – I’m happy he took the time to correctly answer the specific question about just one of them.

    I know a number of people who drive from Whangarei to Tauranga and back. My son attended a weekend activity in Tauranga this past weekend, with people coming from as far afield as Whangarei. While he drove from Auckland, he gave a lift to someone who came to Auckland by bus from Dargaville. The group he’s involved with have at least 2 long weekend meets in Tauranga each year, and I’m pretty sure given the facilities they use that there are a significant number of other groups doing the same.
    Besides the end to end trips, it’s the legs of the journey that matter. There’s small value having a 4 lane highway from Wellsford to Auckland if the road from Whangarei to Wellsford is only 2 lanes. The 2 lane section essentially determines the carrying capacity of the whole length.
    Along with this, there’s the Auckland – Tauranga leg. It’s great going down SH1 now, but as soon as you turn off to Tauranga either onto SH2 or one of the other cross country roads like the Tahuna Rd, you may as well consider the rest of the trip a scenic Sunday drive, especially with the ridiculously low speed limits put in on some sections.

  This is a fantastic move by National. Unfortunately the media just talked about more cars and didn’t also point out the number of deaths on those sections of highway, how free flowing motorways reduce emissions etc
  
  Also followed up this morning by announcing National will cancel “get Wellington moving” and use the money to fund a second Mt Vic Tunnel and roading interconnect

    The designated route before Labour NZF Green Govt killed it avoided Dome Valley.
    As I recall the roading people agreed that building entirely new roads is a long way better than mucking around with traffic management for years.
    The Whangarei to Ruakaka 4 laning was to go to the west of the current highway, I can’t remember the Warkworth to Te Hana Route.

    The Whangārei to Port Marsden leg (~30km) at $1.3b comes to about $44 million per km. It’s tight but not excessively low when compared with other roads. Remember this is essentially a flat road, so minimal cutting and in filling, and there is already an existing road through the area. I’d be surprised if National haven’t already talked to road building contractors to get these figures, I can’t see them pulling numbers out of the air, not after watching Liebour do just that over the past 6 years.

      I expect that the Greenie Approved South American rain forests emit more gas than was released by the pipeline.
      
      What happens to all the leaves and stuff falling to the ground in forests – especially in warmer areas? Same as in your compost bin. It rots and emits vast quantities of CO2 and methane.

      Some months ago I email Niwa meteorologist Chris Brandalino about Tonga.
      
      I asked why, with all that water being ejected into the atmosphere why it wasn’t considered pertinent to the wet weather of late last year / early this year.
      
      His (rather terse) response was that the water vapour went up into the stratosphere which was above the troposphere which is where our weather occurs. He also referenced a Dr Olaf Morgenstern
      
      “The Tongan eruption caused huge amounts of water vapour to surge into the stratosphere, a layer of the atmosphere some 10-20 km above our heads. This has caused cooling in the stratosphere across the Southern Hemisphere. This is because water vapour is efficient at re-radiating heat, either out to space or back toward the Earth’s surface. This means the Tongan volcanic eruption may in fact cause a net *warming effect* in the troposphere, the lowest part of the atmosphere and the one in which we live. This effect may occur over the next 3 years, which is the time it takes the excess water to circulate out of the stratosphere. The eruption appears unlikely to have been a direct cause of the very wet, warm weather New Zealand experienced over winter.”
      
      Well, all I know is that it was very wet last year at this time, and Turoa had a terrific snow base last weekend when I was there

      Obviously there are many types of clouds but seriously how do you base your models.?

        MPs who lose their seats (this dates back to FPTP) used to get nothing; this was thought to be pretty tough to be out on one’s ear at the whim of the electorate – particularly when elections were in Nov & the Christmas shutdown loomed.
        
        This drove the perverse behaviour of MPs not retiring even when they wanted to go, so by standing they got the 3 months salary. So, in an early example of ‘equity’ it was decided that all MPs exiting at a General Election get the 3 months. Not sure about those who resign mid term.

  Like him or loath him (as most National and Act supporters do), he isn’t responsible for the covid policies. He wasn’t there. The nightmare that was (and is) covid is down to Ardern and her bevy of ‘experts’ like Bloomfield, Baker, Wiles and the others.
  
  One thing to always remember, based on comments by National politicians during the worst abuses of covid by Labour, the only difference between them is, that they (National) would have done the same things only more efficiently.
  
  Based on those comments, it is a valid point that the country dodged a bullet when Peters went with Ardern.
  
  I know, a painful and awkward point of view, but we have the receipts. We know what National said at the time. Now they don’t want to talk about it at all.
  Maybe this explains why, because Labour will bring up all the things they said at the time. Chris ‘get boosted’ Bishop will be a great source for sound bites. Awkward. But something National need to somehow address. Those worst affected by the abuses will not forget no matter how much people want it to go away. Nor should they.
  
  It’s an easy fix. Simple apology, we got it wrong, it won’t happen again. Why does this seem to be so hard?

  What upgraded infrastructure and amenities? We have 50+ KO houses being built on our crescent where there used to be about 20 houses. Roughly 2.5 now houses on every plot that previously held one house, and most are 2/3/4 bedroom houses with minimal parking. And there are similar sized developments within 2km of our house. The only infrastructure that’s been upgrade is one storm water drain! There have been no plans to add classrooms to any of the local schools, day care facilities etc. and no action to upgrade playgrounds, etc. One play school has been rebuilt on a new site and additional classes were added, but this was already needed before KO started adding houses.
  I will say one good thing, and that is that so far the quality of tenants has been better than what was in the old houses and we haven’t had the drug, gang and wild party behaviour that we saw previously. We were told by KO that they can’t pick and chose who goes into which houses and that it’s totally needs based, but from what we are actually seeing, they are putting more reliable tenants into the new houses.

  It’s a problem, the last 3 tenants that trashed the house , had parties that upset the neighbours and didn’t pay their rent were Maori, the lovely single mum turned out to be a trojan horse for creating a gang pad and the bright sparks in Wellington made it impossible to evict people.

    I used to drive a 3.0R outback. 63 litre tank. When I’d go skiing at Turoa, it would take a bit more than a tank of fuel to drive up to Ohakune, two mountain ascents to the base area parking and drive home.
    
    About a year ago I bought a 2l Bitdi Passat Alltrack. Last weekend I went skiing. Same trip, to Ohakune, twice up the mountain and home.
    
    Used just over half a tank.
    
    If that isn’t a substantial saving I don’t know what is.

  This is a genuine issue and while the focus is on the BIG name stars and everyone is saying they already get paid too much. Currently an extra on set is paid around a base of $200/day. with a bonus if they do additional things (e.g. ride a bike).
  
  The Holywood execs are now offering those extras a single payment of $200 to digitise their likeness and then be able to use them in any existing or future productions with absolutely no additional payment.
  
  It will literally kill the acting industry. Apart from stage (which doesn’t offer much), there will no longer be a viable way to become an actor which, while I dislike the Leftisim of many actors, I think would be a very bad thing, Players and Acting go back to being one of our earliest professions.

    50 years ago checkout operators typed in all the numbers by hand. Their numbers were savaged by bar codes and then, later, self checkouts.

I heard Mike Hosking talking to someone from “Tourism Industry Aotearoa” this morning, and wondered why it was not called “Tourism Industry New Zealand”.

After checking a bit I found TIA website and this paragraph:

“We updated our name from the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand to Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) in May 2016. We did this to better reflect who we are, what we do and to highlight New Zealand’s unique selling point – our culture.”

“Our culture”: what they mean is the culture of about 15% of New Zealand’s population !

The cultural importance of the other 85% of the country apparently has no value whatsoever.
No English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish culture is recognised; no Indian, Chinese or South Pacific cultures rate a mention, nor does the culture of the myriad other races in NZ.

This maorification process does not go unnoticed, nor does it meet with the levels of approval assumed and desired by the perpetrators.
I am sure I am not the only one who has just had enough of it.

If you’ve got a reasonably good income and your head is above water you’re probably too exhausted and frightened to look around you too much.   A great idea. The logistics are a bit daunting though.
  
  Retirement? My kids of course will be happy to keep paying for my retirement while they are saving for theirs where there will be little or no state input. They won’t be getting anything from their kids in retirement. That should work well …..
  
  Education costs of course would go to US levels eg a year in medical school which currently costs about $10k would go to something like $50k (fees are about 20% of the costs). “Normal” uni and pokytech courses would probably only get to $30k/year.
  
  That transition would be interesting.
  
  Purchasing health insurance for everything would also be a bit novel. Currently available health insurance is basically just an income-smoothing scheme for surgeons doing non-acute work. They don’t do tricky stuff like brain surgery or the like. Particularly if there are lengthy hospital stays involved. The current private system does not deal with acute medical issues. It would all be a bit different and a whole lot dearer if you had something serious.
  
  Douglas is 85. None of this is his problem as he will be gone in a few years. Nice of him to offer solutions though.

This week the US CDC reported that over 450,000 US citizens may be allergic to red meat, thanks to the spread of an (allegedly) tick-borne infection called “Alpha-gal syndrome”.

According to the BBC:

New data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday shows a steep increase in cases of alpha-gal syndrome. The allergy triggers a possibly life-threatening reaction to several types of meat or animal products. US scientists have traced alpha-gal to saliva from the lone star tick.

And, in a genius piece of narrative cross-pollination [emphasis added]:

The tick is identified by the white spot on its back and is mostly found in southern and eastern parts of the US. But experts warn that their range is expanding due to climate change.

That is a very neat piece of propaganda. Well played globalists.

See climate change can be blamed for spreading the “allergy” which means people can’t eat red meat, which they shouldn’t anyway…due to climate change.

  Wasn’t the Spanish teams comments bang on. I see stuff ran an article of all the exciting things to do like, visit a gardern, get a photo in front of the town clock, go to a museum, look for painted rocks in the park, go to the local barbers and talk to a parrot, go to timezone or watch the barbie movie. Sounds like a super exciting place for a team of young females to go to and have a great time.

  Happy to agree that “accept” wasn’t the best choice of words there. “Recognise” or “acknowledge” would have been better.
  
  There’s a difference between “climate change is a problem that needs to be addressed” and “the Government’s position is that climate change is a problem that needs to be addressed”. To the second point it’s legitimate to respond “well it shouldn’t be”, but not “no it isn’t”. It is.

    You’d need to believe that human Co2 is THE control knob for the earth’s climate. There is no empirical evidence for this.
    
    97% of Co2 emissions are natural. 3% of the Co2 is human activity derived.
    
    TOTAL Co2 is currently around 0.04% of the atmosphere.
    
    The “warming” effect of Co2 in the atmosphere diminishes with the more co2 you add. So it provides a “greenhouse effect” to a point, then that effect greatly diminishes with the more Co2 added.
    
    If the sun heats the oceans (which cover 70% of the earth’s surface and are very deep) they release Co2 into the atmosphere. The Oceans hold a lot more Co2 than the atmosphere. That’s why ice core records of ancient gas bubbles of trapped atmosphere clearly show heating happens first then atmospheric co2 rise follows (~800 year lag), NOT the other way around.

  I saw some YT video yesterday indicating the Rishi Sunak was on his way up to Scotland to make some announcement about oil and gas.
  Apparently he’s going to announce something like oil and gas will be part of their energy future for some years to come, and there will be more investment made.
  I’ll keep an eye out to see what the announcement is actually about.
  Imagine if this was the way NZ decided to ‘address’ climate change…

Sat down at a beach picnic table on weekend next to a near-retired couple, got talking. Once were landlords – had 10 down to 5 and moving to sell rest. Govt law changes made it uneconomic and risky for them.

Their children have all left NZ or are planning to, they’re likely leave too once they can divest. See no future in NZ as govt is charting a course for 3rd world status.

I’m hearing these same notes from just about everyone now. Seems like the whole productive sector of NZ, and anyone looking to future or with aspiration of a better life is mulling over leaving.

The vote-for-a-living left don’t seem to understand that while they need the right to survive, the work-for-a-living right doesn’t need them and don’t feel any duty to stay to support their parasitical excess and erosion of rights when the costs they impose are so high. Particularly when the left wing public service can’t even deliver the basics of government effectively (infrastructure, services and standards of living in decline).

Expecting the brain drain to kick into overdrive soon, terminally so if Labour somehow get back in. Labour are truly an existential threat to NZ’s future.

  It’s possible that the need will be obviated over next few years. Ridesharing robotaxis for commuters will be with us in a few years (before any bridge could be built), perhaps killing off buses and freeing up their lanes, and rapid growth of northshore population driving more growth in commercial centres and industry as well as death of CBD and retail shopping + ongoing work-from-home shift may all combine to reduce need.

Apropos of the car transporter burning off the coast of Holland, it seems that there are circa 500 (of 3000) EVs on board, and not the 25 previously reported. Possibly the difference is hybrids; possibly EV fans are happy to blur the distinction.

Anyway, Dutch broadcaster RTL overheard firefighters saying that ‘the fire started in the battery of an electric car’.

  Insurers are in panic mode regarding transportation of ev,s.
  If I was a ev manufacturer i would start seriously looking at building them easily to install / take out battery pack.
  Ie transport separate from completed car.
  It really is a matter of time until they will be banned as it currently stands.

    It is done with trucks. One battery on board, one being charged in Auckland, and another fully charged in Hamiton. Mainfreight I think. Just a test.

Is there a “Worst advertisements on radio” competition ?

I listen to NewstalkZB quite a bit ( ok, I am an oldie ) and quite frankly I don’t know how grown-up people can (a) come up with such pap and (b) expect the public to respond positively and buy whatever rubbish they are advertising.

In my opinion the worst radio ad. on NewstalkZB at present is that puerile one for HRV . Execrable voices, totally childish production. If I was an HRV director or manager I would be bloody angry at what my money had produced.

And in Wellington we have for months had to endure a veritable onslaught from the oleaginous “Jeremy” from the Wellington City Mission:
come on NewstalkZB ! Enough is enough ! How much more of Jeremy’s “Joy” do we have to endure while we patiently wait for adults like Kate, Mike and Nick?

  Neither is perfect (one or two shows on RCR are rather woo/pycho-babble filled, and sometimes the two main announcers on The Platform can be jerks to callers), however overall they are probably miles ahead of the unmitigated crap on offer elsewhere.

Which political leader who called for this use of taxpayer money, or who happily used this funding of Opum as a means to champion their political party and how wonderful they are for ‘investing in our future’ – will now publicly accept that they were wrong and promise to immediately resign from public office, never to return?

Money forcibly taken from the pockets of New Zealand families and thrown around by politicians in an attempt to burnish their political credentials. And when it, frequently, goes wrong never do we hear even a squeak from those politicians. Not one single scrap of remorse or shame – or anything even remotely approaching an apology. Not a single skerrick of contrition.

And what do we get instead?

Promises to do even more of it! They’ll be front and centre of the photo ops at the next funding announcement but nowhere to be seen when it all goes tits up.

We are mugs for putting up with it. Mugs.
