Currently there is a 5:30pm news program on Sky Open ( used to be called Prime ).
This is almost identical to the later 6pm news on TV3.
Does anyone know if this 5:30pm program will continue after July?

      I heard Melisa Lee saying the government would look at regulation around supporting the news media as the existing regs were drafted before the internet. I have a piece of news for her, the collapse of the msm in NZ Zealand has little to do with the internet and much to do with its complete capture by the far left and it’s open political bias. People don’t like being preached to they will rarely pay to be preached to.

        Lee has never explained what she means by that comment but there’s nothing about the existing regulations that hamper TV or radio. Look at their websites. They are huge and full of content.
        
        If she means that internet media should be regulated like TV and radio she can bugger off.
        
        Fact is nobody watches the news shows except a certain demographic who by 6pm have their slippers on with their pudding on their laps.
        
        The idea that we should all wait until early evening with baited breath to get the officially-sanctioned news is woefully outdated. The stultifying wokeness just the adds fuel to the pyre.

        I wish Melissa Lee would have taken her own advice and not done the interview with Mike Hosking. She basically should not do anymore interviews as we learn nothing new, she doesn’t answer the questions and is an expert in Jacinda speak and word soup.

  As I and others have posted many times the death of the MSM news its own fault. If it had presented the news in a balanced format it would still be viable. Instead over the past 20 years its has moved to a conservative free zone with Leftie reporters and presenters. Over that time there have only been a handful of conservatives like Leighton Smith and Mike Hosking up against an army of the Left.
  Their problem was and is the audience is not 100% Left. The old sales adage goes unless you give the customer what the customer wants they will go elsewhere and they have. Their bleating and whinging only shows they are tone deaf to the real reasons for their demise.

    I’m inclined to agree only partiailly. They’ve done themselves no favours, but realistically demographics and technology are against them. Growing up my family religiously watched the 6 PM news bulletin. Now with my own family, we have only very seldom done so, for major breaking news. By the time 6 PM rolls around, we’ve already read the news on our computers and phones. Who needs a dedicated talking head at 6 PM?

  Yep, in the end they are just not very good at their jobs. You would expect that a good journalist, reporter, editor, producer or even news reader, whose job it is to link into the latest, news, statistics, social trends and community issues, would have seen the writing on the wall.
  Confront it months or years ago researched alternative and have a plan b, before they all got the don’t come monday.

    There’s a heck of a lot of folks in Wellington who work on term contracts in the Wellington Public Service. Some of them have never had a permanent appointment.
    
    I think the days have gone where folks could be assured of working for one employer or remain in one career throughout their working life.

    Some commuted weekly from Auckland to Nelson (others from Pretoria to Cape Town), some commutes from Nelson to Wellington daily/weekly ….
    
    Some retired early.
    
    Some wives packed up and followed their partners to Australia. Some work from home, or where-ever they may find themselves.
    
    Some stack apply trays, or sort apples… most get over it and move on.

I have just launched this petition in light of the lack of sentence given to the individual assaulted Judith Hobson at Albert Park. This sort of this happens for too often for serious offences sometimes of a sexual nature.

I hope this may make some difference and at least reduce the number of times this happens. Your signatures will help.

Petition request

That the House of Representatives change the law so that Courts are not allowed to discharge without conviction a person guilty of a crime that is punishable by imprisonment.

Petition reason

The reason I have been motivated to initiate this petition is the case of the man who assaulted an elderly woman injuring a blood vessel near her eye and her cheekbone. While I can see some cases where discharge without conviction may be justified, I believe that too many are granted for serious offending. In my view it is wrong for New Zealand to deceive our allies like Australia and the US where I believe they would not allow such a person to visit if they knew the truth.

  The best you could ever hope for would be something with an escape hatch clause like the 3 strikes “except when manifestly unjust” clause.
  
  Then all the dudges will just declare everything to be manifestly unjust and you have made no progress.

  signed…The whole manner in which the case was handled was weird, possibly corrupt, and counter to usual practise.From the section of cops cowering in a side alley and refusing to attend and deal with the criminal disorder, to the attempt to side track the court system, to laying the least serious charges when the evidence supported the logical, to the long delays in the judicial process, to the endeavours to suppress details.To the failure to impose a penalty How can anyone have faith in such a system such a judicial system….and why?

I watched some of the new TVNZ show “Testify” recently. It was impossible for me to get through the whole episode because it was so blatantly anti Christian and biased against the church.

Everyone in the church was horrible and the good guys were one woman and one trans person. The trans person kept narrating anti Christian tirades.

Now this might be totally the kind of drama you like and you’ll watch it in its entirety? For some of us it’s an awful diatribe that shows us the liberal vision for today, relentless promotion of the cult of trans and homosexuality while viciously attacking the church.

But here’s the thing. It received $6m in funding from NZ on air. So whatever your view of the show, you are paying for it.
It seems like it would be targeting a fairly small audience? But maybe I’m wrong?
Is this the sort of thing you are comfortable paying for? I’m certainly not.

      MCos – that’s true. Christianity is predicated on the sacredness of human life. So in our Christian past we had over 90% of children living in the household with their married parents. We got old age pensions so the elderly would be looked after. Marriage was one man and one woman in a life long relationship. To be fair homosexual marriage was unknown to all cultures and all religions till about 5 minutes ago.
      But yes Christianity promoted strong married families and the sacredness of human life – guilty as charged.

News media layoffs. I kept watching and reading, waiting for some of those interviewed to mention recent surveys showing plummeting trust in them, why that might be. Sad life, I know. Like biased, unbalanced, opinion not facts. And why New Zealanders lead the world in actively avoiding the news.

Not a word, just ‘Save Our Stories’. Which, in the context of not much trust, slogan sounds much more like ‘Save Our Jobs’. And ‘Save Our Correct Ideology’.

Will the remaining MSM learn something? Possibly not, as according to Mr Gower on the wireless this morning, not media’s fault, it’s the economy.

  Hosking had Gower on this morning, he sound half way decent, until Hosking said what do you say to the 100s of people who text saying go woke go broke, or 55 million, he turned feral, Hodking said the text machine has over heated, but I was out of the car before he released any of the messages.

  How to interpret Paddy’s comment with maximum cynicism. For a journo, money is king, so that if the economy is in a bad way there is not enough money so journalists lose their jobs. The alternate view, that the best journalists care about the story, and accept low pay in order to pursue their passion for the truth was put to bed years ago. (Reference to the bed of a printing press intended.) Printing presses are becoming historical artefacts wirh the rise of non-print media.

    Historically anything needing better quality than the old fashioned ‘Gestetner’ or spirit duplicator including Parliamentary order papers, bills, etc were printed. I think the Government Print (then a block away from Parliament) had a team on standby when Parliament was sitting for urgent print jobs. The photocopier together with a decent electric typewriter was the beginning of the decline of printing.

      I honestly don’t believe Tova O’Brian , Lynch, Smurf , Campbell and co see themselves as partisan hacks part of the leftwing establishment in NZ but rather as enlightened purveyors of truth and right mindedness. I believe that they are so convinced of the correctness of their own world view and the inequities of those who don’t share it that their capacity for balance and fair reporting is nonexistent. They come from the same place the place that convinced them that journalism and the media in general is an opportunity for activism and telling the plebs the “ real” truth because of course they can see it all quite clearly whilst the rest of us are too stupid to see. The wall they are now hitting with such force is the wall the left always end up hitting and that is quite simply the vast majority reject their ideology no matter how it’s dressed up this time.

Herald are asking why the food rescues are doing “the government’s job”. I’d like to flip that around: why is the government doing food rescue’s job?

For millenia, charities and social organisations have looked after communities. This has provided numerous advantages, including:
* people were getting these services, provided by people who managed them well.
* the people providing the services (typically successful) would meet the people getting the services (typically the less successful), helping promote social interactions and empathy. On the flip side, the poor people see the people giving them stuff and are thankful and appreciative.
* often the charity came with some sort of pastoral care/advice which was targeted at helping people out of their situation.

Then the state, as always, thinks it can do everything better. Let’s centralise the charity function and make it into another governmental core incompetence:
* people get the services, sometimes, but a trough forms – creating spectacular inefficiency.
* the people providing the service (ie. the tax payers) are still the rich people but they no longer encounter the poor. They grumble about their taxes. On the flip side, the poor people getting the services grumble that the faceless rich are not paying “their fair share” and grumble that the state should give them more.
* there is no longer any pastoral care/guidance element. Just fill out the form. Take the money. Next please.

    These corporate charities are all the same. They have CEOs that fly first class and will have climate change policies etc. It’s a long time since they really worried about handing out a bowl of soup with a hunk of bread.

      There is a wonderful charity organisation in Tauranga called ‘Good Neighbor’. My wife works voluntarily 1 afternoon per week in the ‘Kitchen’ dept. There are other volunteers who do food collection (out of date from supermarkets.) They also collect rejected logs from the Mount wharf, one of the directors have a portable sawmill on his property, & cut the logs into fencing & firewood which they sell at discounted rates, or just give to the needy. They also build sheds for needy homeowners etc.
      It was started by these few guys, and the volunteers – about 100 of them – come from 4 or 5 of the local Christian churches. They provide hundreds of meals per week – some to Foodbank, some to homeless, some to folks via WINZ etc.
      A thoroughly wonderful organisation.
      It was started by a couple of guys who have been successful in business

        And the people they help, do they go on to help themselves or help others? Or are they entitled? Such as if someone is building a friends do they send the 14 year old out to do whatever labouring is needed or making tea or whatever? Or do they sit on the deck and watch?
        
        I used to help a garden franchisee now and again if he was flat out and I was free. One day we did a state house garden while the tenant sent her kid off to school then boyfriend arrived and they went inside to smoke weed (drifted out the windows) with her unneutered but very friendly American bulldog. I told my mate not to ask me to do those jobs again, I’ll do the ones for each people who pay for a gardener but not for people sitting on a benefit Smoking.

        Except for incapacitated people, I am really opposed to the idea of giving out free garden services to state house people. They’re getting subsidised housing, surely they can “give back” a bit by mowing their own lawns?
        
        In the charities of old, there was typically pastoral messaging handed out at the same time – reminding people that they had a responsibility to get their lives back on track. The “no fault” hand out culture destroys that.
        
        In many ways there are parallels to the school lunch programmes. Here they are just hand outs. The system is wasteful and is abused.
        
        In some countries the school lunch programme is woven into the educational system. In ??Sweden?? all the kids participate and the kids help to cook the food, plan the meals, clean up etc. As a result, the kids leave school knowing how to perform useful household functions as well as gaining the social feedback/feeling of reponsibility of doing something useful for fellow citizens.

        The people they help are in genuine need. They do a degree of vetting to ensure they are not being suckered, but their help is not aimed at WINZ customers specifically, or ‘O’Wrangle To My Rickey’. They also work with St. Vincent de Paul, and other organisations.

Getting tired of the continual nauseating comments from MSM entities, thinking we care that they are facing difficulties, when the rest of the country is going through the same stress given the state of the economy the MSM mates, Labour, left it in.
Had they done their jobs in an objective way and held the last government to the same standards they are applying to the current coalition, then maybe the wider public would have some sympathy, but they didn’t and took money in the way of the PIJF so reap what you sow.
Even after the AUT study, recently released, that showed the distain the wider public have for the MSM, they don’t get it, so unlikely to learn/change.
As for ‘river of filth’ Micheal Wood taking court action on behalf of TV1 staff, via his new employer ETU, it only goes to show what his agenda when a Minister was and the true driver behind the appalling Fair Pay Agreements.
And, Melissa Lee, it’s time to harden up buttercup and tell the MSM that given the state of the economy Labour left behind, there will be no handouts or corporate welfare from the current coalition – end of story.

Someone yesterday was asking what the Suicide Prevention unit did.

I wondered the same thing about the Reserve Bank. I know what they are supposed to do ( keep inflation down) but what do they actually do? Apart from being totally woke and hiring lots of diversity staff members and having a press conference every so often, can anyone enlighten me.

    During the Covid hoo-hah he did some good work exposing issues around supplies of PPE or preparedness inconsistencies across regions or the realities for GPs which were at complete odds with assertions by the government.
    He was someone prepared to call out falsehoods, rather than falling in behind the government.
    
    I had a brief correspondence with Micheal Morrah around the time of the 2020 election. Judith Collins had proposed that people should be tested for Covid before flying to NZ/boarding a plane. Saint Ashley of the Podium then spoke to journalists and was critical of the suggestion.
    I contacts Michael to let him know that some airlines were already doing this, regardless of the government, based on people I know flying in from overseas & it was an odd thing for Saint Ash to say.
    He agreed, and said it was a surprise to him to see someone in his role making comments on a proposed policy of the opposition. i.e. that Saint Ash should not be playing sides.
    I didn’t get the sense Michael was a fan-boy like the rest.
    And worth noting that Saint Ash was pretty much joined at the hip with Jacinda and even appeared in election footage (as a background prop) for Labour not long after this……
    Saint Ash appeared on tea towels for purchase by an adoring public. I would rather he was on toilet paper.

  In my sector of the economy, construction and property, I’m regularly talking with folks who have very little on the forward works pipeline. Contractors are really struggling and are throwing ‘hail mary’ bids in, hoping they can make losses back on variations – that will work for a bit but they only need a few big losses and they are gone. Desperate to retain good staff, knowing how hard it was to recruit them in the first place (and always aware of Aussie lurking in the background), but sooner or later economic reality hits and the mass layoffs will have to start, along with some significant liquidations of firms that are poorly capitalised.
  
  Same for consultants – very little work out there. Heard from a well know Project Management consultancy that have no work at all in most of the country – they have offices all over the country and other than a few jobs in the North Island that are currently on site, no other work coming in and none expected anytime soon.
  
  A gallows humour saying is doing the rounds at the moment ‘survive ’til 25′, indicating a hope that government investment and an economic uptick in 2025 will ride to the rescue. Personally, I doubt that will happen – I think the economy is truly stuffed and any government investment drive is likely to be on long lead things like infrastructure, which are notorious for taking a long time to get up to speed.
  
  Seeing this in our own practice – very little work at the moment and everyone is starting to get concerned.
  
  Suspect the Australian agents will probably be getting quite a few queries at the moment!

    I used to work for consulting engineers and then steel detailing for almost fifty years and it was an oft repeated scenario
    Whenever there was a downturn our industry was the first to feel the squeeze. It was bad enough being laid off in NZ, but at least there was unemployment benefit plus odd jobs like permit drawings, house painting, until things picked up again.
    We did remote work in Bangkok for American steel fabricators and a whole lot of American companies subsequently went out of business because they couldn’t compete.
    Periodically there were downturns in the US too and if you’re laid off over there there’s unlikely to be a safety net. Visa canceled and leave the country

…. I was amused to hear Patrick Gower wailing “save the news”. The world has changed. 20 years ago these companies were rolling in money. Newspapers were rivers of gold from classified advertisements for jobs and real estate. TV news was the only audio visual news.

I fear that Melissa Lee is on a futile mission.

    The problem is that I don’t think National know what to do nor how to do it. For some reason, they seem to believe they need to do something. Hence the rush to do something, anything. Never for one second considering that this is simply capitalism in action – some products/ companies need to fail, and those that offer a need or service in demand will thrive.
    
    National will probably go ahead and try and make meta and google pay for content and be genuinely shocked that NZ ends up in the same position as every other country that has tried this.
    
    I fear that we will just end up in a place where the government is giving huge subsidies to legacy media, the same folks who run hatchet jobs on National / ACT / NZF but leave their mates in Labour / Greens / Maori alone.
    
    But still the media refuse to confront the reality that they are failing because nobody trusts them anymore.

      If they can’t make Google pay, then the government will need to pay. Melissa Lee is just speaking in code. She is setting herself up for a fall, either at the hands of the opposition, or at the hands of New Zealand First and / or ACT.

      If someone on the sidelines points out that the former owner put it in the current state, and that their belated concern is really odd it seems that you don’t see the irony and want to point at the vet – or even more oddly – the person making the observation and ask “Well, what solution do you have?”
      
      Well, my solution is that the person should be banned from every having animals again, they need to be ushered from the premises and then pray that the vet is a good vet.

    Precisely, check the episode about the most efficient hospital. The synopsis was of a new hospital that was completed, but not delivering medical services.
    
    It was a brilliant piece of satire, and demonstrated how “a non-functioning govt service could meet targets, like waiting times, and waiting for operations etc.
    
    The last thing the bureaucrats wanted were patients, as that would ruin the glowing reports of the hospital’s efficiency. To read/hear it happening for real in NZ, makes you appreciate how close to accurate the “Yes Minister” or “Yes Prime Minister” scripts were.

I had an additional thought further to the post yesterday about Maori only tutorials in universities. There is another reason that they should be stopped. That is because the left and the woke will never be satisfied. The push for more segregation and ‘safe spaces’ will never end.

  In the 1980s I worked at a large South African power company (now destroyed by affirmative action). One of the programmers I worked with was black (a bit of a novelty for apartheid-era South Africa). At work he got treated the same as everyone else. His childhood experiences and university etc had been very different to the (mainly) whites he worked with.
  
  His main complaint about apartheid was that it forced him to live with other black people.
  
  I fear the same sort of attitude is in play with the Maori students. The successful and good Maori students will likely ignore these special Maori sessions and rather be treated like everyone else. It will be the basket cases that end up going to the Special Maori sessions.
  
  At some stage the university might double down and compel Maori students to go to the Maori sessions, but if they do that they will destroy the education of the people that deserve to be given an opportunity.

I remember when

Lots of talk about whether the TV stations are victims of their own faults.
However, there doesn’t seem to be any real mention of extent to which ‘covid’ affected our perceptions.
Their failure to allow alternative facts and opinions.
In fact, their allowing reasoned arguments to be dismissed ‘out of hand’ because it went against the ‘official’ viewpoint.
The allowing of the daily ‘lecture on covid’ to continue long after there was any medical benefit to be gained.
No considered arguments on the need, or benefits if any, of closing the border and lockdowns.

1 – The economic downturn has an effect on commercial viability, like everything
2 – While the Government saturated ad breaks with covidganda, advertisers found viable alternatives and probably did not return to television
3 – the $55 million investment by the Labour Government, gate-kept by the “I Support The Treaty” clause, did nothing to address the real strife the media are in – so, like everything else the Labour Coalition touched, it did not deliver
4 – what the $55 million did achieve was to drive viewers elsewhere for their news, so another Government policy that ran totally counter to their agenda

Watched tv1 breakfast where they spent 5 or 10 minutes reverentially reporting on the end of Ramadan. No problem with that.
In their news they ran a story about an ad for potato chips being pulled in Italy because they used the chips in place of the host at a nuns communion.
No problem with that.
Then the tv1 newsreader sneeringly tried to crack a joke:
“If the nun gave the priest a chip, that would make him a chip monk”
No problem with that.

But what if the newsreader made that type of joke about an Imam?

  In other words, Israel’s refusal of (and that fact that it obviously doesn’t want) a two state solution is the cause of most of their problems.
  
  They Israelis tell us that they can’t agree to a compromise that will end the cycle of violence because of the Palestinian’s behaviour and attitude, while the reality is that the Palestinian’s behaviour and attitude is a direct consequence of Israel’s unwillingness to agree to a compromise.
  
  The real politik is that, far from a negotiated peace and coexistence, Israel fundamentally needs a belligerent Palestinian resistance movement, because they use the existence of a belligerent Palestinian resistance to justify what they desire, which is all Palestinian territory eventually annexed to form a Greater Israel, having first ethnically cleansed its inhabitants.

        No it wasn’t. Not until 1965 as part of Vatican II did the Catholic Church finally admit the Jews were not responsible for the death of Christ. Quite late in the piece considering the persecutions that had been going on for centuries, and hardly necessary had the church not been keenly aware of its complicity.
        
        Now, as to what I actually said, the nub of it is “a rump of conservative Christians (often Catholic)”. A rump is a vestige of a former, much greater body, and I included all Christians but, yes, often Catholics. And in the modern world there is still a minority of the type that used to exist in very large numbers that keep within themselves a deep-rooted psycho-emotional hatred for the Jews.

The problem with the demise of Newshub is that we are left with the State Broadcasters in the form of Labour-aligned left wing TVNZ and RNZ news. Plus state funded Maori Television news. (With all 3 of them pushing the Maori sovereignty and other far-left radical agendas).

Whilst Newshub may not be perfect (in our eyes) at least they weren’t (entirely) following the Wellington woke civil servant agenda.

Sure Newshub have some crap reporters (their Parliamentary political reporters who delight in being nasty single-issue focused retards), but unlike them at least many of the rest of them put the effort in to be professional and balanced eg Michael Morrah’s investigative pieces, Alexa Cook’s championing of the rural victims of Cyclone Gabrielle that the (then) Labour Govt seemed to want to forget, Lisette Reymer’s reporting from Europe, Karen Rutherford’s reporting on Waikato and regional issues, Nick Trurbridge on Auckland issues. Even Isobel Ewing reports on “climate change” issues and innovations without ramming the issue down viewer’s throats. Plus other reporters I’ve not mentioned.

Yes viewing and advertising habits have changed. Yes the MSM could have done more to appeal to their traditional viewers (without turning woke on them). Yes Labour has fk’ed the economy and businesses including the MSM are now paying the price of the incompetence of Ardern, Robertson and Hipkins as advertisers cut spending.

But brickbats to Warner Brothers/Discovery as their decision to pull out of the news business now hands eyes and advertising to their competitors like the State Broadcasters. TV3’s decline will only accelerate their demise as viewers go elsewhere.

Are Warner Brothers/Discovery now doing a “Wisconsin” railway type manoeuvre by stripping out costs and maximising profits before exiting the NZ scene? Since when has Warner Brothers/Discovery ditched their news operations with their other overseas operations? Shouldn’t they be investing in their products to strengthen viewership and therefore profits?

They could do so by changing their business model. Such as having a point of difference with left-leaning TVNZ/RNZ/Maori TV by shoring up viewers from the Centre and the Right (like Sky News Australia or GB News etc).

They could introduce nightly sports programmes after the news as NZ’ers are sports fanatics and would like to see more free-to-air events.

Have this all available for playback on their digital platforms also with more long form news interviews and/or sport coverage for the die-hards.

Forget about Gen Z, they are hooked to their cellphones. Look after your traditional audiences! (Eventually as the younger generations mature they may venture over to see more locally produced content).

I no longer watch or listen to State Broadcasters, pushing their Labour/Green/woke views, so won’t be tuning into them. But I also want a point of difference. People of NZ deserve a point of difference to TVNZ’s Labour Party propaganda. They are not nicknamed Pravda 1 or RNZ Red Radio for no real reason!

There is also a simple Govt solution at no real extra cost. Scrap most of the NZ on Air funding that funds crap leftist television (remember them funding a series on the Christchurch earthquakes from a marxist/anti-capitalist character viewpoint – FFS!) and put that to news and long form current affairs for ALL media and new media (eg blogs) can contest. But attach conditions – coverage must be balanced, and all or opposing views must be covered (not cancelled or ignored etc). No “opinion” views by the reporters or “advocacy journalism”. Good riddance to the likes of John Campbell sucking off the taxpayer!!

A little while ago I heard one of the guys on ZB making fun of the RNZAF 757s always breaking down. He commented that they were “obsolete”.

Funnily, United and Delta have a combined fleet of about 160 757s, all kept busy flying USA domestic routes, and routes to Europe and Latin America.

  It’s simpler than that. Commercial airliners are designed to run almost constantly, they don’t appreciate sitting around doing nothing. The problem with our 757’s which would be true of any similar replacement, is that they don’t fly enough.

  The RNZAF has done minimal changes to their 757’s compared to a typical commercial operator.
  The big difference is hours of operation. Commercial fly often, RNZAF not so much due to Govt budget constrains. If the onboard systems, Engines, hydraulics, electrical and electronics are run regularly then systems are generally more reliable.
  The number of take offs and landings expressed as a ratio related to hours flown also makes a big difference.

Ukraine is using drones from China, rather than American ones, because they perform better as well as being cheaper, says the Wall Street Journal.

Ukrainian forces are using about 10,000 drones a month.

Most drones from United States start-ups have failed to perform well in combat, the newspaper says, adding:

“Ukrainian officials have found U.S.-made drones fragile and unable to overcome Russian jamming and GPS blackout technology. At times, they couldn’t take off, complete missions or return home. American drones often fail to fly at the distances advertised or carry substantial payloads.”

As well as buying completed Chinese drones, Ukrainians make their own from Chinese parts.

Part of the American drone-makers’ problem is a Defense Department ban on using Chinese components. This has made it harder and more expensive to make small drones.

  The biggest problem the Yanks have is that it is a highly protected and subsidised industry that has been protected from reality for a very long time.
  
  There have been no pressures to improve their products. They get to charge huge amounts for equipment based on obsolete technology.
  
  As a result a lot of their equipment has not kept up with technological advances and now China, or anyone else that has started development in the last 10 years is now eating their lunch.
  
  I am seeing the same in the electronic chip industry. The USA has largely stagnated. All the interesting stuff seems to be coming out of China.

      I’m not sure what Huawei chips or lying you’re talking about, but the stuff I am looking at is astounding.
      
      WCH for example makes a bunch of RISC-V micros that cost about a 10th of an equivalnt chip from a USA company. Their mobile AI chipsets are about 2 or 3 years ahead of the equivalent stuff coming out of USA.

  Ukraine use way more than 10,000 drones a month, it’s north of 50,000.
  
  about 2/3rds of Ukranian kills are now by drone due to lack of artillery supplies, which will hopefully be fixed soon if supporting countries can stump up with the several $billions needed to pay for the approx 2million 155mm shells found for sale from around the world.
  
  Drones have probably got a higher success rate, though tend to be limited to ~10-15km rather than 30-40km for western field guns, and they are not as good at taking out foxholes and trenches – though that is improving as they develop bigger variants and get a greater variety of warheads including thermobaric (2-3x bang-for weight by using air as oxidiser for dispersed fuel spray) for drones.

    It’s just not going to happen. Even if there are 2M 155mm around the world, buying them would mean other countries (India, Pakistan, South Korea, Singapore Australia maybe) stripping their own stockpiles bare to bail out a leaking and sinking ship.
    When and if Europe and The USA get their own production lines up to speed, they will refill their own arsenals first and any other nation that was foolish enough to have depleted their own will be very far down the list for resupply.

After reading story after story about redundancies in the government ministries, what I notice is that in almost all cases, a bunch of those “jobs lost” are vacant.

My question is, how does thats ave the ministry any money? They’re not spending it at the moment anyway.

I guess it allows the budget required to go down, but a lot of the losses seem a bit fake.

The latest one is the Minisrtry of Culture and Heitage which says they’re losing 18%, or 34 roles. But 23 are vacant, which means it’s really 11 actual jobs lost from 161 which is 6.8%

My partner works for a govt department. For the past several years they have been empire building, going on a huge hiring splurge. There are staff who spend most of their time on professional development courses because there is not enough work for them to do, some of these people earning $160k+.

There’s no such thing as cost management or even performance reviews ‘because that causes anxiety for staff’.

Every project is over engineered to the extreme with endless cycles of feedback and consultation. So many reports written but no progress for years. My private sector employer, which is a similar size in headcount to hers, employs a dozen project managers. Her employer has 3 times as many and most are bored due to the lack of work. Lots of hui (literally) and very little doey.

Who is actually seeking to take whose land? What did the Arab neighbours do in 1948 when Israel was granted around 10% of the mandate (ex Ottaman empire) -part of Israel’s ancient kingdom ?

  The whole of Gaza should be given to Israel. The Palestinians have shown again and again they can’t be trusted. The West Bank should be also be part of Israel and a Palestinian state be created on the East Bank extending into Jordan which already has a sizeable Palestinian population.
  Israel is the only truly modern state and democracy in the region and should be given the space to further develop.
  The world needs their brilliance – second only to the USA in the number Nobel winners.

I had enough a few weeks ago when Tamaki Makaura was referred to in TVNZ’s One News six times, but Auckland not once.

In the same news hour the first story was predictably about the White Ferns, a woman’s cricket team, where there was no crowd, but an All Black great’s retirement was last item over 15 seconds.

Paddy Gower…. YOU GO WOKE YOU GO BROKE!

We people that do normal jobs for low pay are actually over being force fed te reo, LGBT stories, and talentless unwatched women’s sports teams.

There is also the fascination with socialist politics that is unhelpful.

  Solar requires storage because it does not contribute after sunset and to account for cloudy days etc. The current hydro station network provides this storage at present but it will saturate at some point (next decade or so). Those installing solar would need to provide this storage by agreement with the hydro station operators arranging batteries. At some point major storage facilities would need to be provided. The Lake Onslow scheme was proposed as a ‘one off’ medium to long term solution, but would be grossly underutilised in the earlier years. Hence smaller scale schemes would be better to spread the capital investment. The Manapouri Power Station was an example of this. The potential of Lake Manapouri for power generation was recognised in the early 1900’s but the capital investment required (together with a host of technological issues) meant the scheme was not viable until the 1960’s.

    Well not really. None of it is pumped storage so none of it can store surplus electricity generated through the day. It can however mean that running solar when the sun is shining means the hydro can be stretched out a bit.
    
    There is another technology called CSP which stores concentrated solar thermal energy in molten salts which can then generate power for a few hours after the sun has gone down. They have some systems like that in South Africa. Works pretty well if your peak usage is a bit after dark as theirs is.

      CSP plant is a non starter for New Zealand.
      The California plant (Ivanpah) uses natural gas to heat up the salt in the morning. It uses the same amount of gas that could generate 124 GWH of electricity pa. and is not remotely profitable even with high California power prices.
      
      1. New Zealand has not got any gas available to kick start the CSP plant each morning (see “Captain’s Call”).
      2. New Zealand has not got the temp/sun hours of a desert.
      3. New Zealand’s peak is winter mornings just before the sun comes up cf Africa where the peak is just after dusk.

      The present hydro power station network does provide buffer storage for wind and solar. When there is significant wind and solar energy feeding into the grid, hydro output is reduced to compensate so the lakes do not empty as quickly. When there is a lull in wind/solar output, hydro picks up the slack. Limiting factors are lake capacities and maximum hydro outputs but dispatchers can work around that.

    250 times as much solar would only cover todays’s real-time demands. If we also wanted to charge some batteries we could suck dry overnight we’d need probably at least 3 times as much as that.
    And that assumes we’ll always get enough sunlight during the day to cover the next night.
    But as we all know, it’s the cheapest form of generation.

Call me a cynic but I think TNNZ tried the usual old civil service trick and it backfired.
Normally, when asked to cut back, bureaucrats leak a plan to cut things like libraries for the purpose of embarrassing the council/government into backtracking on cuts.
A classic example was last week by the Suicide Prevention Department, which working like clockwork.

I believe TVNZ announced a plan to cut their most watched/loved/profitable programmes expecting a countrywide march on the minister’s office to stop the cuts.
It backfired. No one cared, and no one signed their “save our jobs” petition. Now TVNZ has egg on its face and must backtrack.
Idiots.

  As for TVNZ, it is not whether a show is popular but whether it is profitable. Are the shows attracting advertising revenue that exceeds their production costs? I am assuming that the answer is “no”.

      Yes I know it is a real thing. But it is not a department. I had never heard of it. Its website lists no achievements and says it is a shining Maori star. Abolishing it may make no difference at all.
      
      It it’s role is “suicude prevention” you would think that it would have some rock solid stories to tell about the numbers of suicides it prevented.

        Did I read somewhere that is is supposed to have 8 staff and 6 of the posts are vacant? Puts a bit of a different complex on it.
        
        “Rock solid” suicide prevention figures would be a bit hard to gather in a hurry. Individual cases – if any could be found – would just be anecdotal. Outcomes could only be measured by looking at numbers gathered over a year or three.
        
        Since this would be too long in the current environment I guess it’s not unreasonable to can it.

    I agree department is the wrong word.
    Is their work effective, to plan, or even necessary? No one knows. However, those staff played a good hand and now keep their jobs.
    BTW, I had assumed there would be many roles with a suicide prevention focus within various ministries/departments. It sounds a bit like the poisoning prevention function which I also assume has many roles associated with it in various ministries. Labelling, transport, usage, licensing, policing, MPI, Labour, National Poisons Centre etc.

  Bootcamps, as being envisaged here WON’T work.
  
  For them to work (ie. give kids the discipline etc they would get from a proper military bootcamp) requires that they get run as proper military bootcamps under military law.
  
  In other words, if you say “Fuck you” to an officer or refuse to comply then it is off to a military prison. Not just one of the nice wee cuddly prisons.
  
  Worrying about their human rights etc is going to dilute the effectiveness of these bootcamps to the point that they cannot succeed.
  
  No scrotes: you didn’t worry about the human rights of the people you have victimised. Why should anyone care about your “human rights”.
