This is the dragon water slide at De Bretts in Taupo. It is great fun for kids and adults pretending to be kids.

And the main pool. These pools are not just warm, but hot hot. Very soothing. The private pools are fun also. When I was a kid we went skiing a lot, and on days the field was closed we would head to the hot pools for a treat.

This is the House I was staying at. Outdoor dining and drinking is the way to go!

Jonathan and Ava discover the trampoline. Modern day trampolines are so safe. I remember the fun of either bouncing off them, or falling between the springs!

The reflection makes it a bit hard to see, but this is Jonathan after he discovered a high pressure tap pointing horizontally.

And a picture of Lake Taupo from slightly north of Turangi.

    The hot private pools.
    A friend was telling me that he used to drop his aged mother off at the Te Aroha private pools for a soak while he went to the Grand Tavern just down the road. The old dear did not want to bathe in the raw with others; some of those little old ladies are very demure about things like that, and their sons love them for it.
    But no more.
    The Matamata Piako District Council have ruled that nobody may bathe in the private pools by themselves.
    The possible legal penalties that the Council could face if some little old lady died in the pools would put an intolerable burden on ratepayers.
    One of their offspring would wail to TV3 and other non entities that it was the Council’s fault for letting the little old dear continue doing what she has been doing for the twenty years of her widowhood.
    That same bereaved daughter would have been the one who exclaimed in an antagonistic manner, a few years ago;
    “My daughter’s got lice in her hair and I wannna know what the Gummint is gunna do about it.”
    As I looked at the Council’s ruling as was reminded of that quote;
    “A Government that is big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take away everything you’ve got.”

    The pools are great. My trick is a quick dip in the lake after a hard ride and then up to De Bretts. Might take Nikki there one month from today. That is if she is prepared to wait for me at the finish.

    Pity I did not see you there DPF, as I was at those pools on Sunday with the smallest member of the family. Ten rides (at least) on the dragon slide followed by a bike ride along the waterfront to dig out your own hot pools from the beach – and he still had energy to burn!

    It’s best in the winter. When I was there in June with my oldest it actually snowed a little in the pools, just to add a touch of magic.

    Also loved the photos of Mangakino. The place has improved a lot since a developer purchased half the town a few years ago and purged the nastier elements. The local districts appreciate the reduced burglary rate too.
