A decade is simply ten years, it doesn’t matter when you want to start it. So it’s easiest to refer to the twenty tens, better than worrying about the decade that starts in 2011 – stuff the ordinal references, they are not common practice.

No, that sounds like kids who don’t grow up.

Also not keen on the Herald’s start in reporting accuracy -“Dunedin celebrations were reported to be dampened by rain.” After a couple of knarly days of weather it had settled nicely by last night, had a very pleasant dry evening outside.

“Elsewhere it was fine but cool in some places.” A junior reporter must have been given the short straw for duty this morning.

But not for long, forecast high 26 today until “gusts of up to 140 kph followed by another southerly ripping through, better check the tent pegs are secure. Ah well, climate change is normal here.

I see speed camera revenues have fallen by some 5 million dollars despite the addition of some 43 digital cameras. My God, say it isn’t so, it can’t be. A prediction for 2010, a decrease in the speed limit for both the open road and city limits. We can’t have this sort of tax avoidance continuing.

Shit when I used to fly the little buzz-o-bumbles I used to fiddle with the trim, check the scenery, scan the dials, adjust the mixture, read the map, change frequency, talk to ATC, talk to the passengers, scan the terrain, open the window to toss the butt out, shit myself when the weather got dodgy and I never crashed other than the semi-controlled crash that we amateur pilots called a perfect landing. WTF is wrong with people today. Why can’t they multitask?

You have obviously never put one back on the ground while battling twice reccomended cross wind component and placating the passengers who can’t understand that seeing the runway out of the side window is normal just before touchdown. Come back with a more sensible comment after you have tried it instead of being an armchair expert on everything.

New topic for a new day in a new year if I may…

What do most New Zealanders think of when they hear the words “footy” or “football”?

I ask because the Christchurch Press seems to have adopted the policy in its sports pages that “football” now means soccer, not rugby. This strikes me as PC-type piece of bull.

Many people play soccer in NZ, as they do in Australia and the USA, but in all three countries “football” usually means something other than soccer.

Good on the All WHites for doing so well in 2009 in a great sport, but does this justify trying to change what most NZ people think of when they see or hear the word “football”?

The reason I suspect the MSM attempt to engineer a change in meaning is just PC garbage, is because of a long-standing prejudice of rugby as a rough and tough game for boozers while soccer is a game for gentlemen (and now, of course, also for ladies). That, of course is bull, as Britain’s soccer louts and the occasional NZ Christian rugby player prove.

With rugby soon to get a rev up in NZ from the World Cup, “footy” will remain rugby to many of us, regardless of the scribblers.

The State Services Commissioner is inviting applications for the position of Chief Executive of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

The Chief Executive, Ministry of Women’s Affairs leads and manages a small Public Service department that plays an important role in increasing the participation of women in leadership roles across the economy and in ensuring that women have an opportunity to contribute to New Zealand’s economic recovery. The Chief Executive is required to:

provide strategic, intellectual and pragmatic leadership to ensure the Ministry provides high quality advice to Ministers on the Government’s policies that impact on women in contemporary society
*
increase the visibility of and drive progress on the Government’s priorities and outcomes for women by working effectively with and through other agencies, both within the public sector and beyond
*
ensure Ministry staff maintain effective and positive relationships with external stakeholders including national and international women’s networks
*
work proactively with other agencies to improve effectiveness and achieve operational efficiencies, particularly in relation to the costs and provision of support and administration services for the Ministry
*
raise the profile, credibility and relevance of women’s issues in New Zealand.

We are looking for a strong, visible leader with the ability to achieve results through persuasive influence and excellent relationship management. In addition, the Chief Executive must understand the barriers to and have a knowledge of effective approaches to promoting the economic and social well-being of women.

soccer was never the gentleman’s game. Rugby is the game of the moneyed classes and soccer the game of the oiks. See, eg, “Carpe Jugulum”. A propos of which, very sad to hear that the estimable Mr Pratchett is in decline. I do hope there is more of Rincwewind and Nanny Ogg to come.
